Before exploring the differences between these two terms, let’s first acknowledge how they are alike:

* Both are due to head trauma.
* Both are common.
* Both are serious.

But that’s where the similarities end. The differences between cerebral contusions and concussions can be boiled down to two basic concepts:

* Contusions are localized, while concussions are widespread.
* Contusions are macroscopic, while concussions are microscopic.

To flesh out these concepts more fully we’ll need to discuss brain anatomy, brain physiology and brain-imaging technologies.

A contusion is a bruise. At one time or another everyone has bruised himself or herself, as, for example, when they banged a forearm against a hard object. This caused bleeding within or beneath the skin. In the days following the injury it turned purple and perhaps a variety of other colors as the body’s repair mechanisms degraded and absorbed the red blood cells that had escaped from the injured blood vessels.

The same thing can happen to the brain, except that the bruises are not located in a place the eye can see. However, with the help of imaging technology the bruises (contusions) can be made visible. To a close approximation, computed tomographic (CT) scans and magnetic resonance (MR) scans can “see” a level of detail corresponding to what the naked eye can see, except that the information is presented like slices of a loaf of bread, shown one slice at a time. “Macroscopic” means that the naked eye can see the contusions (with the help of a scanner). If a similar process occurs at a “microscopic” level, it is too small for the eye (and scanner) to see.

CT scans are more useful than MR scans in evaluating patients with acute brain trauma because seriously ill patients can be better monitored while receiving CT scans and because fresh hemorrhages are more apparent. In images created by CT scanners fresh blood appears intensely white, while normal brain tissue appears gray.

Although contusions can be multiple, they occur in single locations. That’s what “localized” implies. So a brain contusion is both macroscopic and localized. One common pattern of contusions is “coup-contrecoup.” When a moving head is abruptly stopped (as occurs during a fall when it strikes the ground) the brain nearest the point of impact bashes against the inner surface of the hard skull, producing a contusion. That is the “coup” injury. But then there is either a bounce-back of the brain within the skull or a suddenly created vacuum that produces a second “contrecoup” contusion on the opposite pole of the brain.

Contusions can occur in large enough numbers to produce a “salt-and-pepper” appearance on CT scans. Adjacent contusions can also coalesce via further oozing of blood to produce larger blood-deposits. If a collection of blood becomes large enough to compress and distort the rest of the brain, it might require surgical removal.

It is important to realize that injury to brain tissue is not limited to that produced by bleeding. The same physical blow that disrupts blood vessels is also capable of damaging the brain cells directly.

Sugar: Sugar is a loving fan of bad bacteria and yeast feeds on sugar. So the more sugar you eat the more you encourage the fungal overgrowth.

Several years ago, I told you about a miraculous extract from a carnivorous plant, the Venus Fly Trap. In the 1970s, German physician Helmut Keller was looking for alternative ways to treat cancer. He wanted to avoid the toxic chemicals produced by the drug companies.

That is, they lift a weakened immune system, or stimulate a proper balance of activation and suppression. Too little of the former can lead to cancer and infection.

Too little of the latter can lead to ‘autoimmune’ disease. D and P also increase natural killer counts and function, essential in the defense against chronic disease. These oxidation catalysts are quite possibly able to induce many of the effects of intravenous and more expensive oxidation therapies in your body.”

Since my original report, I’ve had the opportunity to follow the use of this incredible extract with many people. And the results have been fabulous. In this issue, I’d like to show you how I’ve seen it used with success in Lyme disease, cancer, and other conditions.

When Second Opinion reader Richard Lawrence, 88, of Maryland went to see his doctor, he was in rough shape. He was sick with “terrible malaise” and had lymphatic swelling under his arms. His doctor diagnosed Lyme disease.

After starting Carnivora liquid extract and capsules, it took only about six weeks for the masses under his arms to disappear. Then he stopped the program. Richard also has had prostate cancer since 1987, and had radiation in 1988. His PSA in July 2008 was at 9.4, which is elevated.

Richard started taking the Carnivora again. In just six weeks, his PSA dropped to 1.4. Then, in January 2009, his PSA was 1.2. And Richard’s prostate cancer case isn’t unique. Dr. James Privitera, one of the most respected doctors in alternative medicine, confirmed two apparent remissions of prostate cancer to me in his patients. Richard’s case is exciting.

But it doesn’t stop there. Leo Pauliuk, at 68, found out he had hepatitis C. His liver enzyme, AST, was 100. That’s a sure sign of liver damage. It should be less than 30. He tried ultraviolet blood irradiation, but it didn’t help much.

Supplements did help a little. Then when he added Carnivora liquid extract and capsules to his regimen, his AST promptly dropped to 26. His ferritin level, which can be a particularly nasty indicator of inflammation, fell from 500 to 150.

His doctor, from whom he refused the biopsy and interferon treatment, was incredulous and asked what he was doing. The doctor asked for him to stay in touch so that he could continue to monitor his progress.

Incidentally, medical imaging also showed that a kidney cyst had significantly reduced in size. Leo says that he can now enjoy a glass of scotch, a virtual impossibility for any hepatitis patient, and has even had as much as half a bottle with no ill effect.

While I would never recommend that for anyone, it does show how much the health of his liver has improved using this extract. He continues to maintain a daily dose of two Carnivora capsules. Hepatitis C is very difficult to treat.

We rarely see this kind of remission, especially for this long. Carnivora could change the face of hepatitis C treatment. Joanne Fiola, 58 years old of Rhode Island had a very stubborn bronchial infection that was completely unresponsive to conventional therapies.

She also had a blockage in a carotid artery that was causing pain in her left temple. She started taking Carnivora and noticed improvement immediately. The pain cleared, and within three weeks, so did the infection. Doppler ultrasound confirmed that it had cleared the obstruction.

These are all major illnesses, but what about every day illnesses, such as allergies? You’ll be amazed. Andrew Funk of Tennessee is 27. He had suffered from seasonal allergies for much of his life.

Itchy eyes, respiratory mucous, and in the past few years, sinus aching. The latter came on strong last February. He told me that he is exposed to mold in his home’s venting. Mold allergy is a growing problem around the country. Andrew started Carnivora capsules on March 19, beginning with three capsules daily. He worked up to 12 daily.

His allergy symptoms got much better after the first week. All of his symptoms went away. But when he ran out of the supplement, the symptoms came back. However, they were mild compared to what they had been prior to taking the Carnivora.

After restarting the supplement, the symptoms cleared and have remained so since I last spoke to him in May. This is the first time in years he has felt so good during the spring season. He also recommends Antronex (Standard Process Company) as well, especially for coughing and sneezing.

Carnivora has unique compounds that act as a modulator to your immune system. It has potent pro-oxidant phytochemicals. These are not free radicals. They are compounds that can have similar effects in your body to what oxidation therapy does.

There are many more case reports on Carnivora taking care of Lyme disease, chronic fatigue, and breast cancer. It has even helped a bad case of ulcerative colitis. But I want to end with two incredible cases. One woman, I’ll call her Anne, had terminal ovarian cancer.

Her CA-125, one of the primary tumor markers for this cancer, was 79 on January 17th, 2005. It rose fast and hit 1,577 on March 28th, eleven days after starting Carnivora.

Nearly a month later, the tumor marker was near its peak at 2,586. You’d think that the program was not working. But sometimes looks can be deceiving. A spike in tumor markers can indicate tumor die off.

That’s exactly what happened. On May 25th, the CA-125 level had taken a nosedive. It was down to 820. By July 1st, it was down to the normal range at 28. On July 28th, it was 16. Unfortunately, Anne didn’t follow protocol.

Once in the normal range, you should continue on a full Carnivora program afterward. Anne didn’t do this. She stopped using it and the cancer, only then, returned. A full maintenance program (beginning at 15 capsules per day) should continue for at least two to three months (maybe four); then permanent maintenance of three to six capsules per day.

Jane (not her real name), 66 years old of Toronto, noticed a sore, painful lump in her breast in May 2003. A biopsy confirmed it was cancer. She had a 1.6 cm tumor surgically removed. She went to Germany to have a biological treatment.

But it was unsuccessful. When she returned to the States, the pain and soreness returned to her breast. The lump had grown. She lost weight. Three different doctors recommended immediate hospitalization.

It is not “the cure” for cancer. However, getting your immune system online is the best specific treatment for most any ailment you might have! And that includes cancer. Years ago, European research found that Carnivora in capsules modulate the immune system.

That means it will stimulate your white blood cells to do what they are supposed to do. The liquid extract may do more. Research suggests that it can strip off proteins from abnormal or infected cells (not normal cells), which stimulates them to commit cell suicide (apoptosis).

Liver Diseases Symptoms, Causes of Liver Problems

The liver is a very important organ that performs a variety of functions in the human body. Being a large organ, the liver can cope with small damages. If the damage is left untreated, it can worsen the condition of the liver and prevent it from functioning. Severe damage to the liver can result in liver failure and death. Some of the conditions that can lead to death from liver disease are alcoholism, liver cancer, cirrhosis, and viral hepatitis.

Liver disease symptoms can be hard to detect initially. For instance, a loss of energy that often is the first sign of liver problems can be confused with a myriad of other problems, including things as simple as a reaction to a seasonal change or a lack of sleep.

There are dozens of diseases that affect the liver. The two most common causes of liver diseases are viral infections and drugs. Though there are different causes of liver diseases, the clinical signs and symptoms are divided in to two categories.

Keeping your liver in healthy condition is very necessary and that can be done by eating a varied nutritional and vegetarian diet. Junk food, alcohol intake, low quality oils, chemicals -in air and we breathe are the main roots for liver maladies.

About 90 percent of patients diagnosed with primary biliary cirrhosis are women over the age of 40. Women living in northern Europe tend to be more susceptible to this disease compared to women in other parts of the world. Women in Japan have the lowest rate of diagnosed cases of this disease.

The liver can get inflamed due to certain conditions, use of alcohol and certain chemicals. The conditions that can cause liver inflammation are Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Autoimmune Hepatitis, and Wilson’s disease. Extensive alcohol use also causes inflammation of the liver. Some drugs and industrial pollutants may affect the liver. Inflammation is characterized by redness, swelling, heat and possible pain in the liver.

Alcoholic liver disease occurs due to an acute or chronic inflammation of the liver due to alcohol abuse. This disease usually occurs after a prolonged use of alcohol. In the United States 10% of men and 3% of women suffer from problems related to alcoholic consumption.

The symptoms of impending liver deterioration cross over into other medical problems as well making early and precise laboratory tests and narrative. The symptoms will likely include nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and tenderness, vomiting, fever and jaundice. Further complicating the issue is that symptoms of cirrhosis are quite often almost identical to those of alcohol hepatitis.

Accurately Code for Hematuria with the New ICD-9 Codes

Hematuria is the presence of red blood cells in the urine. It is one of the most frequent conditions warranting referral to urology. The more specific the coding is, the better for you. But, when you code for hematuria, you’ll encounter very few codes which are specific and this can get confusing at times. The chances were, so far, not so bright to get your reimbursement, but with the updates, it’ll get easy for you to code for specific conditions.

The new ICD-9 codes replace the only code for hematuria – 599.7. These new ICD-9 codes for hematuria, or blood in the urine that will provide more specificity than the current code, are:

  • 599.70 – hematuria, unspecified
  • 599.71 – Gross hematuria. A patient has gross hematuria when blood is visible to the naked eye on urination. The urine is red or brownish-red when a patient has gross hematuria.
  • 599.72 – Microscopic hematuria. A patient has microscopic hematuria when there is no blood visible to the naked eye on urination but blood appears on a urinalysis.

    Urology coders will frequently use these new diagnostic codes to properly characterize the degree or severity of the hematuria. The biggest diagnosis change for the group will be gross hematuria versus microscopic. These new additions will ease the way you code for hematuria.

    The new ICD-9 changes are very good for you, because the words ‘benign’ and ‘essential’ have been deleted. Usually, you’ll be unable to understand if the hematuria is benign and/or essential until after the complete workup, so ‘hematuria, unspecified’ is much better. The changes will ensure you get your reimbursement – every time.

  • Reducing Acid Reflux And Choking Spells

    Choking can be a very startling and upsetting experience for many acid reflux sufferers, both infants and adults alike. The symptom of choking usually occurs at night when a person is sleeping, and choking is what tends to wake the person up who then usually violently coughs to clear their throat and catch their breath.

    Why does acid reflux and choking occur? When acid reflux occurs during sleep, the body’s natural defenses against reflux are deactivated. For instance, you no longer have the ability to swallow saliva, which neutralizes acid, and the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) relaxes, so it no longer blocks stomach acid from flowing into the esophagus. The deactivation of natural defenses can not only lead to heartburn, but can also allow stomach acid to creep up the esophagus and pool in the throat, enabling it to flow up into the mouth and nose. When this happens, the acid can be aspirated (sucked in when breathing), causing it to dribble into the lungs and windpipe, resulting in choking, and possible damage to the lungs.

    There are a few factors that can cause acid reflux and choking at nighttime in adults. The following is a breakdown of what these major factors are, followed by what can be done to treat the problem:

    – Sleeping supine – If you are sleeping in a supine position (laying flat on your back), stomach acid can freely flow into the esophagus and remain there for an extended period of time. This can cause heartburn, and can also lead to the acid rising further up the esophagus into the throat.

    Prevention Tip – Sleep with your head and shoulders elevated, about 3-6 inches above the mattress. Use pillows to prop yourself up. The idea is to place your body on a slight incline so that acid cannot reach your upper esophagus. Sleeping on your left side may also prove beneficial as studies have found sleeping on your right side can make the problem worse.

    – Sleeping in constricting clothing – Tight clothing that gathers at your waist places pressure on your stomach, and can force acid up and into your esophagus.

    Prevention Tip – Wear loose fitting clothing/pajamas to bed and avoid pants, shorts, or underwear with tight elastic waistbands. While sleeping you don’t want to cause any unnecessary aggravation that increases the risk of reflux or makes it worse.

    – Eating before bed – Many people make the mistake of eating or drinking directly before bed. Lying down too soon after eating slows down the digestion process, and sleeping on a full stomach dramatically increases the risk of heartburn, as well as acid reflux and choking.

    Prevention Tip – Eliminate foods that trigger acid reflux symptoms (I.E. fatty and spicy foods, alcohol, etc.) from your regular diet, and avoid eating or drinking 2-3 hours before going to bed. If you are thirsty, only drink water slowly in small amounts.

    How can I prevent acid reflux and choking in my child? Unfortunately, infants are also prone to acid reflux and the symptom of choking. The main reason for this is because the LES is not fully developed in many infants younger than 18 months. Signs of acid reflux in your infant include:

    – Frequent spitting up combined with poor sleeping
    – Extreme fussiness
    – Frequent back or neck arching or stretching
    – Refusal of food
    – Slow weight gain
    – Chronic sinus or ear infections

    If your child has any of these symptoms you need to have him/her properly diagnosed by their pediatrician. Acid reflux is very complicated to diagnose in children, and only your child’s pediatrician can make this diagnosis and determine what treatment is best for your child. Never diagnose your child on your own.

    Nevertheless should your infant have acid reflux and choking, the following are ways you can help prevent your little one from suffering:

    – Modify the diet. This may mean giving your child:
    – Smaller and frequent meals
    – Thickened formula with rice cereal
    – No foods that trigger acid reflux such as citrus foods, tomato products, carbonated beverages, spicy foods, chocolate, etc.

    – Hold the child in an upright position during feeding
    – Keep the child in an upright position for a minimum of an half an hour after eating
    – Lay the child so they are on an incline so their head and shoulders are slightly elevated. This can be done using a wedge pillow.
    – Your doctor may also prescribe medications.

    Finally, anyone who is suffering from nighttime acid reflux and choking, or other symptoms, should speak to their doctor and obtain the necessary treatment to prevent symptoms from occurring, so that damage of the esophagus and/or lungs can be avoided.

    Food Poisoning Incubation Periods

    We have had many questions sent to us in the past asking if we could investigate a restaurant in our jurisdiction.  Usually the complaint was of getting sick a few hours from dining.  The complainant is puzzled when we ask where they ate 5 hours ago, 12 hours ago and 1-2 days ago?  The reasoning for this timeframe is that most common food illnesses take several hours to as much as 6 weeks to incubate to the point where you would feel symptoms.  Below is a table that should assist you in determining what may have caused your complaint.

    How Can You Detect Stomach Ulcers ?

    Did you know that you have a one in ten chance of developing an ulcer at some time in your life? These small perforations of the gastrointestinal tract can cause a world of hurt and complications that may jeopardize your health.

    Stomach ulcers, sometimes called a peptic ulcer, are small holes in the gastrointestinal tract’s lining. Sure, you may get lucky and develop a duodenal ulcer that is benign, but what if the stomach ulcer is malignant? How do you even know if you have this disease or if it is indigestion?

    So what causes these gastric ulcers and what is the ulcer treatment you can expect? Well, let’s just tackle one question at a time. Here is what happens to cause this particular disease. The sensitive lining of the gastrointestinal tract (including the stomach) is in contact with the acid from the stomach.

    The acid wears a hole in the lining and an ulcer appears. Most of the time, these ones are caused by a tiny bacterium and are really an H pylori ulcer. The Helicobacter pylori are a unicellular bacterium that can live in the acidic environment of the stomach.

    It is what weakens and erodes the mucous lining. Once the mucous is gone, the acid and bacteria can start work on the lining which then leads to an ulcer.

    There are some symptoms you can look for if you think you have stomach ulcers. These symptoms, such as a pain in the tummy that comes after eating a meal, or in the middle of the night when your tummy is empty, or a feeling of upset stomach or nausea (which could indicate an H pylori ulcer) may be present.

    The only way to be sure if you have a stomach ulcer is to go to your doctor and discuss the symptoms. Testing will indicate whether or not such a disease is present.

    There are two different ways that a doctor can diagnose a stomach ulcer. The first is through drinking a chalky liquid and taking an x-ray. The second is through an endoscope. The small endoscope camera is inserted into the gastrointestinal tract and the physician looks for any ulcers that are present.

    A biopsy will likely be preformed and the tissue will be tested for the H. pylori bacteria, which is most often the culprit behind such diseases. Regardless if it is or is not, the doctor will prescribe medication to heal the disease.
