Babies are so sweet and vulnerable – they are truly a parent’s greatest joy. At the same time, when your baby has ANY kind of health problem, it can be extremely stressful and draining. Babies’ bodies are so sensitive, and as a parent you just want to solve the problem – ASAP! In this article I’m going to share with you what I learned from my own experiences with baby oral thrush.

As you’re probably already aware, baby oral thrush can be difficult and frustrating to treat – if you don’t have the right approach. When your new baby arrives all you want to do is have time to bond with your little sweetie and recover from the rigors of child birth. Thrush can really make things hard on both mom AND baby.

So, how do you know if your baby has thrush? You can always take him or her to the pediatrician, but some of the most common symptoms include:

*creamy, white patches of yeast overgrowth on the tongue, gums or inside the cheeks
*fussiness/irritability
*loss of appetite
*reluctance to nurse or feed
*baby’s mouth seems painful or sore.

Sometimes your baby will have a white film on his or her tongue that may appear to be thrush but is actually just milk residue. Milk residue you can just wipe away – if you try to wipe away baby oral thrush, then usually there will be a little bleeding. If it’s thrush, it won’t wipe away.

Babies are vulnerable to oral thrush for a few reasons. First their immune systems are still developing, so really they’re more vulnerable to ANY kind of opportunistic infection. Also, both breastmilk and formula have sugars in them (lactose in breastmilk), and yeast just love sugar. This is what can make thrush tricky to treat – because you can’t stop feeding your baby! So there’s sugar present in your baby’s mouth.

Yet all babies nurse or feed, yet some get thrush and some don’t. Why is that? Well, one of the biggest factors contributing to thrush these days is the extremely common use of antibiotics during childbirth. Between c-sections and the use of antibiotics for strep-B, millions of women and babies receive antibiotics every year.

Allergies – How Did They Come About?

An allergy or also known as hypersensitivity is an abnormal reaction to certain substances that usually occur naturally. If an allergic person is exposed to these substances called allergens, the body’s immune system gets ready to fight them. Allergens are microscopic protein substances that are common and provoke allergic people to produce antidotes (antibodies). The most common allergy provoking substances are pollen from weeds, grass, flowers and tree, mold and mold fungus, house dust mites and pet dander.

Where did allergies come from? How did they originate? The earliest report of allergic disease is that of King Menses of Egypt who was killed by the sting of a wasp at some time between 3640 and 3300 BC. From ancient history, Britannicus, the son of the Roman Emperor Claudius was allergic to horses and developed a rash in his eyes and swelled that he could no longer see.

The concept of allergy was originally introduced in 1906 by the Viennese pediatrician Clemens von Pirquet. After he noted that some of his patients were hypersensitive to normally innocuous entities such as dust, pollen, or certain foods. Pirquet called this phenomenon “allergy” from the Ancient Greek words allos meaning “other” and ergon meaning “work”. According to history, all forms of hypersensitivity were classified as allergies and it was caused by poor and improper immune system.

Scientists believe allergies originated millions of years ago as a way for the human body to free itself of parasites and invading worms. The body fights these elements and other invaders by producing an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE) in the intestines and lungs. IgE triggers immune cells to release a number of chemicals, one of which is histamine. Histamine produces hives, watery eyes, sneezing, and itching. The more a person is exposed to allergens, the more the body produces IgE and usually, allergies often get worse with age.

What causes an allergy? Allergies can be caused by just about any substance that you inhale or swallow, or that touches your skin. Today, allergies are extremely common and it continuously arises. They cause annoying symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, swollen and itchy eyes. They can also trigger other conditions such as asthma, sinusitis, ear infections and skin rashes. The most common symptom of allergies is allergic rhinitis, most popularly known as hay fever. These symptoms are similar with those of the common cold. The difference is, common cold runs for 7 to 10 days while allergic rhinitis can drag for weeks and even moths.

The FMLA and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and other functional digestive diseases are significant contributors to workplace absenteeism. IBS in particular is a pervasive disease with estimates placing the number of those affected at 25 to 55 million people in the United States alone. Though I do not suffer from a digestive disease myself, I have become familiar with IBS through the experiences of a friend who was facing termination from work due to chronic lateness. He came to me for legal advice on how to handle the situation. This prompted me to look into what legal protections may be available to someone having attendance issues at work due to the symptoms of IBS and other digestive diseases. I previously wrote on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) with a special focus on digestive diseases.

The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) allows employees with a serious medical condition to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid but JOB PROTECTED leave in a 12 month-period. FMLA has several advantages to someone suffering from IBS, Crohn’s Disease or other digestive diseases. First, although the leave is unpaid, the employee’s position is protected while on leave. Second, the leave does not have to be taken all at once but may be taken intermittently, and even on an hour by hour basis. For my friend who had particular difficulty with getting to work on time due to the IBS flaring up most frequently in the morning, being able to take a hour here or there to cover lateness would obviously be a helpful protection. Third, all-too-important health insurance benefits are continued during the period of leave.

For an employee suffering with IBS to qualify for leave under the FMLA, there are several fact-specific criteria that must be met. First, the person’s employer must be covered by the FMLA. All public entities, including Federal, State, County and Local agencies (including schools) are covered. In regard to private (e.g. non-government) businesses, an employer is covered so long as it employed 50 or more employees in 20 or more work weeks within either of the last 2 calendar years.

For the employee to be covered by the FMLA, he or she must have worked at least 1,250 hours within the last 12 months for his or her employer. The employee must also work at a location where 50 or more employees of that employer work within a 75 mile radius.

Finally, in order to qualify for Family Medical Leave, the employee’s IBS or other digestive disease must meet the definition of a “serious medical condition” as defined in the FMLA. This means a condition which prevents the employee from working, and which resulted in an in-patient stay at a hospital or other medical care facility, or is the subject of ongoing treatment by a medical professional. The FMLA regulations also specifically recognize chronic health conditions that can qualify for leave. These conditions occur over a period of time and “may cause episodic rather than continuing periods of incapacity.” This would certainly seem to describe the situation faced by most sufferers of IBS.

The reader should understand that the Family Medical Leave Act is a complex statute which is supported by voluminous and complex regulations. There are going to be rules, exceptions to those rules, and then exceptions to the exceptions. The entitlement to leave is a fact specific determination made on a case-by-case basis and there is the potential for confusion and/or conflict. If you feel you are being treated unfairly by your employer, or you have questions or concerns, I recommend speaking with an employment attorney to discuss your specific set of circumstances.

Although financially successful, many of these anti-aging items are met with skepticism by consumers because their efficacy is unproven. But stricter regulations and more exhaustive testing have given millions hope that a handful of products can deliver on their lofty promises.

Understanding Aging

Over the course of human history, there have been countless theories to explain why our bodies break down, both internally and externally, as we age. What is PQQ?

Classified as a redox cofactor that works as a powerful antioxidant within the body, pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) plays a critical role in cellular energy metabolism, development, and function. Clinical trials have not only revealed that PQQ helps protects mitochondria from oxidative stress, but also that it is responsible for mitochondrial biogenesis, which creates new mitochondria within aging cells. These findings are significant because of the possible benefits they might have for human health and longevity. Recent Findings

The most comprehensive study to date on the effects of PQQ on fatigue was conducted at the Ueno Clinic in Tokyo, Japan in 2009. During the course of the 8-week study, 17 office workers with diagnosed sleep disorders were given 20 mgs per day of PQQ. Because most of the previous testing on PQQ involved cognitive and cardiac issues, researchers were surprised by what they observed. At the end of the study, they concluded that PQQ supplementation appeared to improve sleep quality and duration. Subjects also reported improved mood that was the direct result of diminished feelings of fatigue. Perhaps most importantly, no health issues or serious side effects were associated with PQQ supplementation.

Although the results of a single clinical trial are far from conclusive, the vitamin-like nutrient has been shown to improve fatigue recovery, energy, sleep quality, and some cognitive functions; all of which are linked to depression. Only time will tell of PQQ becomes a safe and reliable alternative to prescription antidepressants.

Over Coming the Fear of Moving

The fear of relocating is a real and devastating problem for some people. The anxiety of moving to a new state, town or even a new house can be overwhelming to some.

As hard as it might be to believe, there are tens of thousands of people who suffer from the fear of moving, or Tropophobia as it is called. It is a very real, diagnosable disorder that if left unchecked can have devastating consequences for those that suffer.

Tropophobia, is known by a number of names including the most common ones such as Fear of Moving, and Fear of Making Changes. To those that have never experienced any type of moving anxiety it might be hard to understand exactly how debilitating this disorder can be. For those that have at least been slightly anxious about moving to a new location, it would be a bit easier to understand how a disorder such as Tropophobia can be so debilitating, how it can have such a large impact on quality of life for those that suffer.

Some people live in the same state, the same town, even the same house their entire life and never think about or have need to even consider moving to a new location. Their lives are well rounded and well adjusted to their particular surroundings and they lead happy full lives. But there are those that will live with a fear, a fear of change, a fear that keeps them trapped in the same house, the same town, the same state, for years or even a lifetime.

Studies have revealed, especially in larger metropolitan areas such as New York and Los Angelis that people live their entire life in the same house, never venturing outside a mentally determined safe zone. Be that a borough area such as Brooklyn New York, or a neighborhood within that area. Stories continues to surface about people who know little about the world around them because they suffer from severe Tropophobia.

Trying to explain the thoughts and feelings of those that suffer is very difficult to put into words to give readers the ability to understand. It might be easier to understand if one were to state it like this. Imagine standing on a rocky cliff, with your feet already half way over the edge. Imagine looking down from that cliff and not being able to see the bottom, but only darkness as the distance falls away beneath your gaze. Imagine kicking a stone over the edge and waiting for the report of its hitting bottom, but never hearing it.

Now imagine if you will, that the world tells you that a better, more abundant life is right in front of you only a few steps away and all you must do is take a few more steps past the edge, from that edge you have been standing on, which from your point of view is the only stable ground you have left before falling into a bottomless pit.

Of course it’s not quite that simplistic. To characterize in all the facets that make up the disorder would of course show it to be much more multi-dimensional. But the above illustration serves as an example for reference of thought.

Fear of Moving has the ability to devastate not only the life of the one who suffers from it, but also those lives around that person as well. Suffering from Tropophobia can cause loss of job opportunities or advancements or even loss of a career. If a spouse needs to relocate because of job, it can cause severe marital problems far beyond the normal pressures of such an event. Fear of moving, or fear of change can have not only devastating psychological effects, but damaging physical effects as a result of the anxiety as well.

Tropophobia is not always easy to spot as a disorder. Many people who have fear of moving don’t realize it. They may have developed a sophisticated method of coping with the disorder that is capable of rationalizing any and all decisions they make in resistance to making change, reasons that may on the surface sound and look totally convincing. But when the rationalization runs out, and a problem is finally recognized, there is hope.

The hope is in that like every other phobia, Tropophobia can be treated, it can be over come.

Many times taking the first small step in treating it, will lead to giant steps forward in a very short time. In other cases, slow methodical steps toward treatment and recovery are needed. There are agencies and support groups that can help. If you suffer or know of someone who suffers from fear of moving, don’t let it be in control. Take control and get the help needed to overcome and live a better life. The first step is realizing the fear, and the second is to take action against that fear.
