Arachnophobia – the Fear of Spiders

Arachnophobia is the scientific name for the fear of spiders. 3) motor responses (immobilisation or flight)
However they is very little agreement as to where the phobias come from. Many people seem to inherit at least a predisposition to arachnophobia and that otherwise it can be conditioned into people, but otherwise there are a large number of unproven theories as to the causes. The most accepted form of treatment is aversion or behaviour treatment. These tend to involve a mixture of education and experience, most arachnophobes (in fact most people) have little real knowledge of spiders. Learning allows the sufferer to use their own mind to counteract the rising emotions. Familiarisation or experience has a similar effect, giving people the opportunity to gain perceptual evidence of spiders as being basically harmless, to desensitise them. How Female Hormonal Changes Can Contribute to Anxiety and Panic Attacks

Some women are more sensitive to hormonal fluctuations than others. For many women, anxiety issues appear for the first time during periods of hormonal change. For other women, hormonal changes intensify previously existing anxiety symptoms. 

Anxiety is one of the most common symptoms of Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS), post-childbirth, and perimenopause (the period of time before the onset of menopause). It may take the form of panic attacks, nervousness, sweating, intense fear, anxiety combined with depression, or other overwhelming symptoms. 

Here are several periods of hormonal change that can intensify or trigger anxiety in women. 

Puberty — Developing girls experience hormonal changes as they prepare to begin their reproductive years. 

Monthly menstrual cycle — Often girls and women experience PMS the week before their period. 

Following childbirth — The severe drop in certain hormones following childbirth can cause dramatic physical symptoms and a temporary feeling of depression or anxiety; in some women, it is prolonged.

Perimenopause — Perimenopause is the period of time when the body is approaching menopause. It may last from two to ten years. During this time the menstrual cycle becomes irregular as the hormone levels keep fluctuating, causing some women to experience PMS-like symptoms.

Although many of us may use the term “going through menopause” to describe this period of time, it is actually called perimenopause. Many women experience panic attacks for the first time during perimenopause. Other symptoms such as insomnia, hot flashes, rapid heartbeat, and sweating are also common. 

With surgical menopause (hysterectomy), you’ll likely experience perimenopausal symptoms after the surgery, even if you did not experience symptoms prior to surgery. Symptoms can be prolonged and are due to the dramatic and sudden decrease of certain hormones as a result of the hysterectomy.  

In non-surgical circumstances, menopause occurs after a woman has no periods for twelve consecutive months. It lasts only one day. Many women report feeling better than ever mentally and physically after menopause, due to the fact that hormone levels stabilize.

Hormonal Change Triggers the Fight Or Flight Response

Due to the fact that hormonal change causes physical and psychological stress, it triggers our “fight or flight” response. The fight or flight response is the body’s inborn, self-protective response to perceived danger. 

When we perceive that we are under stress, our bodies send out a rush of cortisol, adrenaline, and other brain chemicals to prepare us to “fight” or “flee” the danger. 

The fight or flight response triggers the physiological changes that we associate with anxiety, such as rapid heartbeat, increased blood pressure, sweating, muscle tension, narrowed mental focus, heightened emotion, and many other symptoms. 

These are the same physical sensations that many women experience when their hormone levels fluctuate. In other words, most of the symptoms women experience during times of hormonal change are really fight or flight reactions. While these physical sensations are not dangerous, they can be very intense and overwhelming.

Our fight or flight response mechanism can become “hypersensitive” with the various hormonal changes in our bodies that take place from puberty to menopause. Many of us are in a constant state of stress due to our lifestyle and thought patterns, which also causes hypersensitivity.

In other words, our bodies may be stuck in the “on” switch of fight or flight. What normally wouldn’t trigger symptoms, now initiates symptoms and perpetuates an ongoing cycle. 

Fight or flight reactions in and of themselves are harmless. However, when our thoughts convince our rational minds that these symptoms are scary and dangerous, we create an anxiety cycle.

Anxiety consists of more than fight or flight reactions acting by themselves. Unproductive thoughts play a critical role in creating and perpetuating the anxiety we experience.
 
Our thoughts convert fight or flight reactions into anxiety, and a self-perpetuating cycle begins. Soon we find ourselves limiting our behaviors because of anxiety as well, which further entrenches the vicious cycle.

When a person is under stress, unresolved emotions and issues commonly come to the forefront. Because hormonal change is a major stressor, it can bring up internal conflicts and self-doubt in many areas of our lives. All of a sudden, we may find that the negative self-talk that we successfully pushed to the background of our lives during less stressful times is now playing center stage. 

During periods of hormonal change, we may also feel uncertain about our changing roles (e.g. maturing from girl to woman, becoming a mother, becoming a mature woman past childbearing years), which can add to our internal conflict. 

When we fail to successfully resolve internal conflicts and the unhelpful thought patterns that contribute to them, we create a breeding ground for anxiety. Combined with fight or flight symptoms, it’s no wonder that these unproductive thoughts create and perpetuate the anxiety cycle!

3 Conditions to Avoid When Watering New Grass Seed

If you have recently planted new grass seed, hopefully you are aware of the importance of keeping it properly watered for the duration of its germination and new growth. If not, here are some conditions to avoid that will help to insure the grass seeds you planted grow into the beautiful lawn you dream of.

First of all, over watering newly planted grass seed is very bad. Too much water will cause your seeds to float up and mess up the even distribution that should have been created in the sowing process. In addition, a great deal of over watering will cause seeds to float away completely from the area you planted them in. Obviously washing your new grass seeds down the street is a bad idea. If you are using a sprinkler for watering your new seeds, keep in mind that shaded areas will tend to hold water longer as they don’t receive as much sun. Less evaporation means that these areas will require less watering in order to keep your grass seed moist. In addition, over watering newly planted grass seed can also lead to seed rot if the water puddles and sits for long periods of time. Rotten and moldy seeds will not sprout.

Under watering grass seed is another common mistake when taking care of a newly planted plot of grass. Seeds must have moisture in order to germinate correctly. If you are planning to be out of town, now is not a time to be planting new grass seeds as it will need frequent small doses of water throughout the day. Under watering is common no matter what season you decide to plant. Be sure to water frequently so that the top inch or three of soil remains moist throughout the day without drowning your new seeds.

Uneven watering occurs when sections of your new lawn are both over watered and under watered. This situation is most common when you are using a sprinkler system with or without a timer to water your new grass seed. If you have a system that can be adjusted, do so before planting so that shaded areas and any areas that might puddle receive less watering and areas with especially bright sun throughout the day receive slightly more. If you can’t do this with your sprinkler system, you may have to resort to watering by hand in order to achieve your desired results with your new grass.

Planting a new lawn is a time consuming effort that will pay dividends for years if done right. If not done properly however, you may be wasting your time and will have to start all over again with new grass seed.

As said previously, cancer of the breast is extremely common among women. It is, in fact, the second most common illness of this kind among American women (coming in second to skin cancer). The different stages of breast cancer are dependent upon 4 things; the size of the tumor, what type it is (invasive or non-invasive), whether or not lymph nodes are involved, and whether or not the illness has spread to other areas of the body. Let us take a brief look at the different stages of breast cancer.

The first stage which is considered stage 0, describes non-invasive breast cancers. In this stage, all cancerous cells remain in the breast and do not invade into neighboring tissues. Stage 1, on the other hand, describes invasive breast cancer. Invasive cancer means that the cancer cells are breaking out of the breast and heading into neighboring tissues. In stage 1, the tumor is up to 2 cm in length and no lymph nodes are involved.

Stage II if the disease is divided into 2 categories; IIA and IIB. Both stages involve invasive cancers. An individual is diagnosed with Stage IIA breast cancer when no tumor is found in the breast but cancer cells are found in the lymph nodes, when a tumor in the breast (measuring up to 2 cm) has spread into the lymph nodes, or when the tumor in the breast is between 2-5cm but has not spread to the lymph nodes. Stage IIB is diagnosed when the tumor is between 1-5cm and has spread to the lymph nodes, or when the tumor is larger than 5cm and has not spread to the lymph nodes.

Stage III of this illness is also divided into subcategories (IIIA, IIIB, and IIIC). Stage IIIA cancer is diagnosed when cancer has spread into the lymph nodes and they are clumping together. Stage IIIB is diagnosed when the tumor has spread to the chest wall or skin of the breast. Finally, stage IIIC is diagnosed when the tumor has spread to the chest wall or breast, and has spread to the lymph nodes. The final stage of breast cancer, stave IV, occurs when the cancer has spread to other organs of the body.

Insomnia is such a common problem (one in three adults report having some type of insomnia) that sleep aids such as Rozerem are more popular than ever.

What Causes Insomnia

Insomnia happens when your sleep-wake cycle, or your internal clock, is disrupted. It can be caused by many factors: stress, illness, pain, jet lag, sleep apnea, excessive physical or emotional arousal, shift work, a sedentary lifestyle, worrying about sleep, depression, and other factors.

Certain types of drugs can cause or worsen your insomnia:

Types of Insomnia

Insomnia presents itself in a variety of different ways… once-in-a-while insomnia, chronic insomnia, insomnia that keeps you from falling asleep, insomnia that wakes you up frequently during the night, insomnia that wakes you up too early, and insomnia that allows you to sleep, but poorly.

There are three main types of insomnia:

1. Transient Insomnia: This is short-term insomnia that typically lasts from a few nights to a few weeks. Transient insomnia may cause next-day sleepiness, mood changes, and performance impairment.
2. Intermittent Insomnia: This is when you have periods of transient insomnia that occur on and off over months or years. It can lead to chronic insomnia.
3. Chronic Insomnia: This is long term insomnia – difficulty sleeping for more than a month. Chronic insomnia is often related to more serious problems like depression, memory impairment, accidents, missed work, and increased visits to the doctor.

Self Help for Insomnia

* Open the bedroom windows if possible. Fresh air may help you sleep.
* Don’t read or watch TV in bed… reserve the bed for sleep so the mind begins to associate lying down with sleeping
* Keep a tight schedule going to bed and waking up at the same time each day.
* Avoid daytime naps so you’re more tired at bedtime.
* Don’t eat heavy meals before going to bed. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and tobacco.
* Exercise, even 15 minutes a day, can help you relax and get a better sleep.
* Warm milk before bed really works because it causes a chemical reaction that increases serotonin in the brain, making you feel relaxed and calm.

What Is The Difference Between Lung Cancer and Lymphoma?

There are two different types of cancer that may affect the lungs:

1. Primary lung cancer is categorized as either small cell, or non-small cell, and usually begins in the lungs before it spreads to other parts of the body. Small cell is commonly associated with heavy smokers, where non-small cell may include other types of cancers such as squamous cell, large cell carcinoma, and adenocarcinoma.

Symptoms may include a persistent cough, coughing up small amounts of blood, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pains, a dull aching pain in the shoulder that may move down the outside of the arm, a notable weight loss, and recurrent chest infections or pneumonia.

Diagnosis of lung cancer is not usually found until after a doctor has ordered a chest X-ray which is usually associated with another illness. If lung cancer is detected by the chest X-ray, a CT (computer assisted tomography) scan, or a MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan may also be ordered to further confirm both the diseases diagnosis and staging.

Staging includes a limited Stage, where only one lung is affected together with the surrounding tissues, and an extensive Stage, where the cancer has spread to either the chest tissues outside the lung of origin or to another part of the body. Staging begins with Stage 0, where cancer cells are found to be in the lining of the lung; Stage 1A, where the tumor growth is no more than 3mm across in diameter and continues through Stages 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, until Stage 4 is reached. This is where the lungs or other parts of the body have multiple malignant growths.

2. Metastatic lung cancer, is categorized as either Hodgkin’s or non-Hodgkin’s, and begins in another part of the body before it spreads to the lungs. Metastatic lung cancer is a cancer of the lymphatic system.

Symptoms may include fever, fatigue, itching, swollen lymph nodes, and sweating during the night while sleeping. The lymph nodes can be found in clusters in the pelvis, neck, under the arms, and in the abdomen. When non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is present, it is common for its reason to be unknown.

Diagnosis includes blood tests, and a biopsy of the lymph node tissue for examination under the microscope.

Staging is based on the extent the tumor has spread.

Stage 1. Where only one lymph node or area is affected.

Stage 2. Where two or more lymph nodes are affected on one side of the diaphragm, or a single lymph node where the tumor has affected a nearby organ.

Stage 3. Where lymphoma is found in the areas above and below the diaphragm, and is considered to be advanced.

Stage 4. Where the lymphoma has metastasized to other parts of the body such as the liver, brain, or bone marrow. At this stage the disease is considered widespread.

Some Examples Of Outdoor Camping Equipment

It is important to have the right outdoor camping equipment. People put together camping lists, so they are prepared, and have the best time camping. This is a good idea, because if you don’t plan your trip right, you are going to end up miserable and may have to cut your adventure short. This also means not only remembering things like flashlights and your first aid kit, but also preparing for the unexpected. It means having a warm sleeping bag, one that is rated for the climate you are going into. Camping in the mountains, while it may be warm when you get there, can get down right cold at night. Some higher elevations can get down into freezing levels, and having a sleeping bag that is not rated for these temperatures can mean waking up in the middle of the night cold and miserable.

When putting together camping lists, another important piece of outdoor camping equipment is the right tent. Don’t be fooled by cheap tents. These may be inexpensive, but you will regret buying them when you get rained on, have problems with the floors, and end up ripping zippers opening and closing them. You want to buy a quality tent, one that is at least fifty dollars or more, depending on the size. Here is another area where it is kind of tricky. Every tent will say how many people will fit in it, but this is just a rough guideline. If you look at the box, it will usually show the people so close to one another that they are touching. This is not the way it is in real life. You have to take into consideration your girlfriend or spouse, as well as the kids if you have a family. There needs to be space to move around. You also have to consider your gear, clothes, and other things that you want to protect from the weather. This means that if you are camping by yourself, you need at least a two man tent. If you are camping with your wife, then a four person tent is needed. If you have kids, then you may want to consider a modular tent, with separate areas for the kids, equipment, and yourselves.

Next on your camping lists should be your ice chest or cooler. If you are looking for this outdoor camping equipment, then you really have to look around. Look for coolers with double walled construction, that have secure lids and comfortable grip handles. Think about how many days you are planning to be out, you are going to need dinner meals, milk for breakfast, as well as lunch meat and condiments. This also doesn’t include any soft drinks or water. A thirty six quart chest is a good start for those short overnight or week end trips, but if you plan on staying out longer, nothing beats a fifty four quart or large chest.
