An Introduction to Nail Art

Nail art is an exclusive niche that is gaining popularity in recent times. This may be because Hollywood stars like to flaunt the newest styles and right now the focus is on nail art. Nail art nowadays is seen basically as an extension to the myriad personality of the stars, Hollywood or otherwise. You too can be part of the fun by trying out various styles and we can help you with a few work of art.

This art is basically distinguished by the difficulty of the designs into basic, intermediate and advanced level according to the various websites that have appeared on the internet that need to be painted onto the nail. Usually when people dress with a great hairstyle and dressing sense they don’t really pay attention to their nails. However if more focus is given to the nails through nail art, you can make a much bigger impression on others. And you will be one among the few who flaunt it which is even more reason to try it. Professional Nail artists say that, when people can spend so much money on their hair and body beauty treatments then why can’t they do the same for their nails and hands which after all provide nourishment through the act of feeding.

Due to the popularity of nail art among the Hollywood stars, the trend has spread to the younger generation as well. And there are a lot of new nail artists who take this profession up as a career due to the healthy demand. In fact, the crazier the designs, the better for the Nail art market this year. Colours like black, red and white are displayed proudly by the customers of these nail artists. However this trend is seen usually with the younger crowd and not so much with the older generation or even the middle aged women. Nail artists say that Black Nail colour is usually displayed by followers of the Goth subculture. It’s said that the colour black is a much better attention catcher than the other more conventional colours like light red etc.

There are usually step-by-step accounts on the internet on how to create designs on the nails. Only the products are necessary to carry them out. Of course the right professional will make a big difference but this depends on the difficulty level of the design that is being implemented since basic designs can easily be done by oneself but the more advanced level designs need an experienced professional to get the intricate designs right.

Nowadays there are also 3-D nail artists. By inserting Emerald Design sculpture onto the nails we can shape this into any particular shape of our liking. Even glitter can be added onto the nails with a suitable material like glue to hold the same in place. Hence it can be seen that the area of nail art is a specialists spot with a number of forums online offering tutorials to copyrighted or patented methods of creating creative designs.

Pointe Shoes – What Is Sickling And Fishing?

Dancing in pointe shoes is a very precise technique – if you want to avoid common dance injuries such as sprained ankles and knee sprains. A young dancer, or an adult ballet beginner, may take two or three years of classes, and be constantly sickling in, or curving the ankle inwards towards the center of the body, or “fishing”, or curving the ankle outwards away from the center of the body. On a working, or presenting leg, where there is no weight on the foot, it really does not matter. But on a supporting leg, the leg that bears the body weight, it certainly does matter – especially if you want to dance in pointe shoes.

Keeping the ankle aligned, meaning neither sickling or curving in, nor curved out, is the ideal situation. But dancers with less arch curve may want to sickle out, or “fish” the ankle curve, on a working, or lifted leg, to show a lovely curve of the foot that a very flexible ankle joint would show. This will not result in a ballet injury, to the foot or the knee.

However, allowing the ankle to sickle in, or out, on a supporting leg, will eventually affect the condition of the foot’s arch muscles, as well as the ligaments supporting the knee joints.

So a properly instructed dance student may choose to “fish” or sickle out a working leg foot, in an extension devant, or an arabesque, to create the ballet aesthetic that ballet teachers, choreographers, and artistic directors look for. This is okay in a presenting leg ballet position.

Most audience members that go to ballet are not looking for this kind of detail, please believe me. PLEASE.

On a supporting foot, whether in toe shoes or on demi-pointe, the ankle must be aligned, that is, in a position a straight line down from the knee joint, in order to protect the tendons and ligaments that keep the structure of the upper leg, knee joint, and lower leg, safely intact.

Shingles – Herpes Zoster – The Simple Facts And The Cures

What is Shingles – Herpes Zoster: Shingles (known also as Herpes Zoster) is a very sore, rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. It affects a limited area of the body and skin. Not only can it be very painful but it can also make you feel weak, tired and many even cause severe depression.

What causes Shingles – Herpes Zoster: You can only get shingles if you have previously had chickenpox. After having chickenpox the virus lies dormant in the nerves, and shingles occurs when it is revitalised in one particular nerve to the skin, this explains the way it affects a certain band or area of the skin. Many times the outbreak is caused by a decrease in your body’s natural resistance or a weakness to the immune system. Most people who get shingles are more than 49 years old.

Shingles – Herpes Zoster – Symptoms: Usualy the first symptom of shingles is often over-sensitivity or a burning sensation on the skin in the affected area. After a few days, a rash develops. It usually appears as a band or path, following the route of a nerve under the skin. At first, the rash consists of small red spots and reddened skin in the same area. The spots then turn into small blisters, which dry up after a few days, and gradually form scabs. Shingles is often a very painful condition, since it affects the nerves, the pain may continue after the rash has cleared, sometimes lingering for months or years.

Shingles – Herpes Zoster – Treatment: Shingles is most often treated with acyclovir, famciclovir, or valacyclovir (also named: Valtrex). Your doctor will decide which of these medicines might work the best for you. Most of the medications work better if they are started within the first couple of days after you get the shingles rash. Often a doctor will also prescribe a steroid medicine to reduce the pain and swelling. If you get Shingles of the eye it is often treated with antiviral medicines and steroids.

Shingles – Herpes Zoster – Prevention: There is a study under way for a vaccine to prevent shingles, called the ‘Shingles Prevention Study’. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is asking for volunteers for the study at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Interested people should call for more information: Toll-Free 1-877-841-6251

The Healing Process of the Sciatica Nerve

When it comes to the healing process of the sciatic nerve, it is no different to the healing process of any other structure in your body – If you give it the correct conditions to heal itself, it will!

If you ever cut yourself or pull a muscle, your body will immediately strive to heal this injury. This is because the body has an innate desire to heal itself of any injury it has suffered, the sciatic nerve is not excluded form this process.

The problem with regards to sciatica (& Low Back Pain for that matter) is that it can be very difficult to provide the body with the optimum conditions to heal itself.

Let’s use a simple cut as an example…

Were you to cut yourself, straight away the blood would start to form a scab and the scab itself would get stronger with time until eventually the scab is replaced with scar tissue – the body’s fantastic healing process at work.

However, let’s say that as the scab is healing, you continue to pick or scratch at it! You know for a fact that bleeding will occur (because there has been a re-injury) and therefore the healing process has been interfered with which means the healing process itself will take longer to complete. It is for the same reason that a cut on your elbow or finger joint takes a lot longer to heal.

Well, the sciatic nerve is no different…

If you are performing specific activities which continue to place inappropriate stresses across the sciatic nerve, you will be interfering with the healing process just as you would be when scratching a scab. Therefore your sciatica will take a lot longer to heal, or maybe even get worse if the stresses are too severe. The aim is to discover and then temporarily avoid or modify these stressful activities, as this will allow the body to continue to do what it always strives to do, heal itself.

Equally important is the need to provide the sciatic nerve with optimum healing conditions…

Once again, using the cut and subsequent scab as an example, as soon as you provide the cut with optimum healing conditions, it begins to heal itself. This is exactly what you need to do with the sciatic nerve. Only this time, when you have discovered what the best activities/positions it is that the sciatic nerve likes, you need to encourage these little and often throughout the day.

The reason for this is because the sciatic nerve is formed from nerve roots which leave the lower back. Everything we do, be it sitting down, standing up, walking, bending etc. places increased stress across the lower back and therefore the sciatic nerve. Unfortunately, this usually means it is not so easy to identify the easing factors, but fairly straight forward to identify the aggravating ones!

However, it is not an impossible task. If you can identify both the aggravating and easing factors for your sciatica and then take appropriate action, your sciatic nerve will begin to heal itself.

This, coupled with an appropriate but simple exercise programme, will result in the sciatica you are suffering with resolving and you leading a life free of pain.

Voice Training Could Have Prevented Vocal Cord Surgery for Yankees Mariano Rivera

It is sad that Mariano Rivera underwent surgery on his vocal folds (cords) recently. The Yankees’ closer was diagnosed with severe vocal abuse in which polyps had developed on his vocal folds. A month prior to his surgery, he noticed a decrease in his ability to speak which was characterized by a raspy, whispery quality. What is interesting is that, with the right training, he could have prevented it.

Vocal abuse is a problem for many people, including teachers, coaches, soccer goalies, trainers, ministers, politicians, speakers, actors, and singers; however, it is not just people in those professions who can experience vocal abuse. Anyone who yells a lot – for example, rooting for your favorite sports team – or who speaks for great lengths of time is a candidate. Even if your business is just talking on the phone for 8 hours a day, you may find that you have a persistent sore throat, chronic hoarseness or even loss of voice by the end of the day.

While surgery may be the answer, if you continue using your speaking (or singing) voice in the same manner as before, then the vocal abuse will return. The only answer is to learn to place your voice properly.

We have 5 resonators responsible for voiced sound. They include the cavities of the chest, voice box, throat, mouth and nose. Most people, however, use only 4 of those 5 resonators. The one that is not being used happens to be the one that has the most power and is the largest in size. That, of course, is the chest cavity.

Without this large cavity as your primary sounding board, you are relying primarily on your throat and voice box to power your sound. That is the mistake and that is why vocal abuse is an ever-increasing problem today. We are using our voices more so than any other generation. While singers often experience vocal abuse at some time in their career, there are many others who are suffering including Anthony Robbins and Hillary Clinton.

If you are noticing problems with your voice, you need to learn to power your sound by means of your chest cavity. In doing so, you will not only eliminate the vocal abuse but you will also discover a richer, warmer, more mature-sounding voice that has the ability to be projected. Projection is the increase in volume without shouting.

You will be amazed at the difference in how you sound and how your voice feels when you let your chest do your talking!

Cold Sore Treatments – Get Rid of Cold Sore With 3 Simple Effective Tips

Herpes Simplex type I (HSV-1) is the virus that most responsible for cold sores. Cold sore infection of the mouth is very common and the appearance may cause concern but it presents no serious risks to your general health.

A cold sore is highly contagious, especially in the initial stages. The main danger involved in cold sore is spreading the infection to the eye. Seriously, you should avoid touching your eye after you touch the sore. It may cause you blindness if you are not careful with this. Touching a cold sore and then touching other places can cause spreading of the virus. Avoid kissing, sharing eating utensils or cups, towels or other such items with other person if you have cold sore.

Though it can heal within a week to 10 days without any treatment, the fact remains that the duration can be so painful and irritating to sufferers. Cold sore treatments are normally categorized into two groups: over-the-counter (OTC) medications and home remedies for cold sore.
In this article we will discuss more on home remedies for cold sore because I found that home remedies are inexpensive, easy to prepare and effective to treat it. There are several cold sore treatments that have been known to work quite well.

1. Ice is the most common treatment for cold sore. You will be surprised that this simple treatment offers much pain relief. You may send the virus back into hibernation. Ice the area 2-3 times a day for about 15 minutes a time.

2. Build your immune system against cold sores. Increase multi-vitamins and proteins intake. Infection can decrease along with the proper diet, exercise and adequate amount of sleep. Proper diet can help to shield you from the viruses and take sufficient of sleep, our body will naturally heal when well-rested.

3. Apply tea bags on your cold sores. This is because of the tannin properties found in tea which is believed that it can effectively treating a cold sore. You can consider pressing a warm tea bag on the blisters for around 30 minutes.

Simple Ovarian Cyst Treatment

The presence of ovarian cysts is a medical condition that causes a lot of emotional stress for women. It affects their self worth and makes them very unhappy. This condition can lead to depression in women so it is very important that the cysts are gotten rid of as quickly as possible once they have been detected.

Symptoms of ovarian cysts include excessive bleeding, bloating, excess weigh gain, painful menstruation and depression. This condition can also prevent pregnancy from occurring. The simple way to treat this condition is to use natural treatment. A lot of them are known and have produced positive results.

Knowing the root cause of this medical condition will help a lot in getting remedies for it. Some major causes of ovarian cysts are genetic factors, hormonal imbalance, unhealthy diets and insulin imbalance. When these causes are identified, ways to correct them will then be determined and with good effort in applying the various treatment methods, the ovarian cysts will start to shrink and eventually disappear. Also continuing with a healthy lifestyle and avoiding the factors that can cause ovarian cysts will help to prevent the cysts from developing and growing again. Below are some simple treatments and ways of getting rid of this condition.

By making changes to diet, this condition can be gotten rid of. Diet plays an important role in the development of ovarian cysts so attacking the problem from that angle will go a long way in curing this ailment. The right diet will create the right balance in body hormones which are a main cause of this condition. First of all, the body has to get enough water on a daily basis. This helps to detoxify the system and create a good hormonal balance. Between six and eight cups of water should be taken daily. Drinking herbal tea is also a good way to detoxify the system and will help to shrink this condition.

Eating of processed foods should be discouraged. Daily meals should comprise of foods with high fiber content. Lots of fruits as well as vegetables should also form part of the diet. All these will help the hormonal system of the body to function properly and at the same time shrink off the cysts which will be totally gotten rid of with time.

Rubbing castor oil on the abdomen will help to reduce pain that may result from this condition. Afterwards a warm towel should be placed on the abdomen.

With careful and diligent practice of the above simple treatment methods, this condition can be easily gotten rid of.

Psoriasis Revisted: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition characterized by red, scaly, and/or thickened patches that appear on the skin.  The inflammation is caused by an unusually rapid production of skin cells due to hyperactive T cells (or white blood cells).  Skin production is, in fact, seven times faster.  The outer skin fails to shed properly causing dead cells to pile up and cause scaling.

Psoriasis is a chronic but non-contagious condition that affects about 2-3 percent of the population.  Both men and women in any age group are susceptible.  People with dry skin, however, are more vulnerable than those with oily or moisturized skin because infecting organisms tend to thrive better under drier conditions. Psoriasis can affect any part of the body including the knee, back, scalp, elbows, and even the nails.  The face, however, is less commonly affected.  There may also be a genetic basis for psoriasis.  In 30 percent of cases, individuals with psoriasis also have a close family member such as a parent, child, or sibling who is also a sufferer.  The severity among family members varies, however.

There are several kinds of psoriasis. The most common manifestation is in the form of plaques that appear on the scalp, back, elbows, and knees.  Another kind called Flexural psoriasis occurs in areas with excess skin folds like under the armpits and in groin creases.   Guttate psoriasis, which mostly affects children, is caused by an infection and manifests itself as small, salmon colored drops on the skin.  Exfoliative psoriasis is a rare, life threatening kind of psoriasis that covers 90% of the body and can affect skin temperature and hydration control.  Psoriasis may also cause joint problems resulting in a condition called psoriatic arthritis.

Various factors can either trigger or worsen psoriasis.  For example, a cut or injury to the skin is the triggering factor in about one-third of cases.  Other factors include smoking, alcohol consumption, stress, and use of certain kinds of drugs like enzyme inhibitors, antimalarials, and anti-inflammatory medication.

Treatment of psoriasis is symptomatic and dermatologists often use trial and error to find the right form of treatment for their patients.  Topical steroids, however, is probably the most common and effective form of treatment.  Ointments and creams containing coal tars are also beneficial as they help reduce inflammation while softening and removing the excess skin and plaque.  Examples include Emollients, Keratolytics, and Calcipotrienes.  Activated Vitamin D is also used to prevent skin cell growth.  Sunshine is another form of treatment although excessive exposure should be avoided to reduce the risk of skin cancer.  In severe cases, more potent oral medications like Acctane, Imuran, and Methotrexate may be administered under the supervision of a dermatologist.

Bumps on Corners of Your Mouth are Often Angular Chelitis

Bumps in the corner of the mouth, or dry flaky skin that splits painfully could be a sign you have Angular Chelitis or Perleche. If you have suffered with chapped lips, you may have Angular Chelitis if the condition is centering around the corner of each lip. Typically both sides are affected.

Angular Chelitis is not contagious, so you are free to kiss others without fear of spreading the affliction. However finding someone to kiss may be another matter. The raw, red legions with a whitish hue at the corners of the mouth can put off your most ardent admirer. Most sufferers lose the desire to kiss others during an attack and missing out on affection is a circumstantial side affect of the disease.

Angular Chelitis often is accompanied by a yeast infection of the mouth. Candida or oral thrush infects the tongue, coating it with a whitish hue. This fungal bacteria is infectious and contagious. Currently the most often prescribed treatment for Angular Chelitis is 1% hydro cortisone. However, often 1% hydro cortisone is extremely ineffectual and sufferers tend to give up on controlling their symptoms and curing the infection.. Many people simply live with the condition, waiting out there symptoms, which can go away on their own.

Millions of Americans suffer this affliction every year and typically a sufferer gets it several times a year with a significant proportion living with the legions at their mouth on an almost permanent basis. This painful and socially debilitating disease is very common and not life threatening, however the majority of sufferers would do almost anything to ease the symptoms and cure the infection once and for all.

Ten Questions and Answers About BDSM and STDs

1. What is a sexually transmitted disease or STD?

Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) is the politically correct term for what used to be called “veneral disease (VD)”. These are diseases that are transmitted through or as the result of sexual activity (not just sexual intercourse).

There are no BDSM specific sexually transmitted diseases but like any other sexual activity BDSM activity CAN spread STDs.

Heterosexuals are a lot less STD aware than the homosexual world is, but they should be just as educated on the subject. As a result, the current risk groups for any STD are heterosexual women.

There are many different sexually transmitted diseases and certainly not all are directly related to the genital organs.

General information is freely and widely available from doctors, hospitals, first aid centers, pharmacies and of course on the Internet.

2. How does one get STD infected?

Some sexually transmitted diseases are viruses, others are caused by bacteria, some by plain and simple dirt. As a result, there are different ways, in which people can get STD infected. An important form of STD infection is the contact between bodily fluids (most importantly blood, sperm, vaginal fluids and mother milk). This is especially true the most lethal ones in the Western world: such as Hepatitis (around in different varieties) and HIV (Aids). As a result, contact with bodily fluids should be avoided by anyone who has more than one partner (even if that is only incidental) and partners who have not been solely together for MANY years (not months). Incubation time (the “lead” time before the actual infection shows itself), in the case of HIV for example may be as much as five to seven years.

Another well known cause of STD infection is lack of hygiene. In the BDSM world especially quite a lot of personal hygiene is neglected. Toys that have been on the floor or in a toy bag should not be used unless cleaned and – when brought into contact with the genital area – protected. One should wear latex gloves during penetration, especially when in a (more) public environment.

3. What do I do when I (think I) am STD infected?

There is only one answer: visit your doctor as soon as possible. Bear in mind that your doctor is not there to judge you, but to cure you. And yes, doctors have seen it all before and many times. If you feel troubled by having to go to your doctor, turn to a first aid center or a specific STD center if there is one in your area.

Every STD spreads like wildfire! They are among the most contagous diseases. In most cases if you are infected, you do not only have a responsibility to yourself, but also to your partner(s) and to an extent to you entire environment.

4. Can an STD be cured?

Some can, and some cannot. There are no cures yet for HIV, hepatitis C and various forms of herpes, for example. HIV and hepatitis C are potentially lethal. So is syphylus, but there is a good cure for this disease.

5. Does an STD only effect me?

Every STD will effect you but most will also effect your partner and maybe others (such as unborn children) if not properly taken care of. Sometimes an STD can be the cause of dead babies or incurable medical problems. Some will not really effect the bearer, but will badly effect the partner and – for example – cause infertility (in males especially).

6. How do I protect myself against STD infection?

Your first line of defense is strict personal hygiene. Wear latex gloves and use condoms, also on penetrating toys, such as dildos and vibrators. Regularly clean equipment and – for example – wash bondage ropes.

The second important line of defense is to educate yourself. Again, know what the risks are and avoid them.

7. Does an STD spread quicker, because of BDSM activity?

The BDSM community is very open. It is not unusual to temporarily exchange partners, people switch partners frequently and such things as BDSM parties open an easy risk for infection. Besides, BDSM activity implies much more physical contact than most other forms of sexual behavior and there is the frequent use of toys and equipment. So, there indeed are more opportunities for infection, compared to a standard vanilla relationship. As a result – although no real research has been done in this area – there should be a higher risk of spreading an STD.

8. What BDSM activities are likely to spread an STD?

All forms of penetration, genital or by means of toys, fingers, fists or the mouth are activities that can transmit an STD. In terms of BDSM there are also other activities. Whipping may occasionally cause small superficial skin wounds and any breakage of the skin is a serious crack in the bodies main line of defense against diseases, including many STDs. Bondage ropes, used in the genital area, are a well known vehicle for sexually transmitted diseases and so are internal toys (vibrators, dildos, Ben Wah balls, vibrating eggs, etcetera). Nipple clamps may also cause small skin wounds. In general, BDSM activity is much more physically intens and physically demanding than most other forms of sexual activity. As a result, you should be more careful.

9. Why do governmental and health organisation hardly ever mention BDSM-acitivity in their STD information?

Most forms of what is generally known as “alternative sexuality” (such as BDSM) are overlooked by governmental and health organisations, when it comes to information and education about STD risks. The reason for this is largely in the fact that such organisations simply will not believe there are that many practitioners and that such organisations have no clue about BDSM. “Alternative sexuality” in the entire education of health care professionals usually takes up as much space (and attention) as ONE PAGE IN ONE BOOK! That is, if alternative sexuality is being mentioned at all!

10. How can I help to inform people about STD risks?

If you happen to be active in a local BDSM community, or for example have a personal website about BDSM, try and devote some time and space to sexually transmitted diseases occasionally. For example, next to workshops about flogging, bondage or needle play, a workshop about STD prevention will be very helpful. But, since this is not a popular subject you may also want to settle for having leaflets available, writing something in your magazine or newsletter if you have one and putting information on websites.

How To Kill Lawn Fungus

Lawn fungus, in addition to being an eyesore next to your home, destroys grass. Normally it shows up as brown splotches on your lawn and it spreads rapidly. Once established, it’s tough to get rid of, so the sooner you get to work fighting it, the better chance you have of ridding your lawn of it.

If you happen to live in a rainy area such as Seattle, odds are that you will encounter more problems with lawn fungi than those living in drier areas of the country. Moist environments are the perfect habitats for all kinds of lawn enemies such as mold and fungus. With moisture, mold can grow in less than a day.

Fungus sort of creeps up on you without notice. In fact, the biggest problem with lawn fungus is that it starts out unobtrusive and almost unnoticeable. You’ll see a brown patch and think nothing of it. Then suddenly, two days later, patches of brown spots are overlaying your lawn.

As always, the absolute optimal remedy for lawn fungi is to prevent it from getting a foothold. If you are able to prevent it from getting a foot hold in the first place, you won’t have it to worry about. A healthy lawn has a healthy immune system and is unlikely to be susceptible to fungus. A healthy lawn means that it’s getting enough food or nutrients, and water.

In addition, it means that the soil has a pH level that makes it difficult for fungus to take hold. Fungi likes soil that has a low pH. If you keep it high, say around 6.6 to 6.8, this will be perfect for your plants and help to prevent fungi from getting a foothold. Ensuring that your soil has proper pH can also help your lawn recover from fungus. To test your soil’s pH, you can get a soil test kit from your garden center.

Another technique to prevent fungus from infecting your lawn is to not water it overnight. Instead, water it in the morning. This allows the lawn to take advantage of the sun to dry it out and prevent it from getting water-logged. Watering the lawn at night tends to promote fungus. The exception is if you live in a dry or desert area. Then watering at night does not increase conditions for fungus growth. Also, avoid mowing a wet lawn as this is more conducive to spreading any fungus.

Simply put, a fungicide is any type of agent that demolishes or prevents the fungus from growing. There are natural fungicides as well as synthetic ones made by manufacturers. To get rid of your lawn fungus, take your fungicide and follow the manufacturer’s instructions which usually involves spreading it over the infected area. Many homeowners will apply a maintenance application of fungicide once a year to their lawn to reduce the incidence of the disease.

Now, usually, lawn fungus is something that you don’t want and you will try your best to rid your lawn of it. But, recently,  scientists have developed many varieties of grasses called endophytic grasses. These grasses are purposely cultivated with live fungi growing inside of their leaf blades.

This type of fungi is by nature, toxic to a variety of the lawn pests that you will find in your yard. This includes billbugs, fall army-worms, chinch bugs, and a host of other critters. The purpose for developing these strains of grasses is to reduce the amount of pesticides that would be required to fight these pests. If the grass can use it’s built-in protection to defend itself, it doesn’t need as much poisonous chemical help from us.

Enlarged Liver: What Are The Treatment Options?

Enlarged liver is a term used to describe a potentially serious medical condition. The main characteristic is that the liver swells to an abnormal size. There are a number of diseases and illnesses that can cause this to happen. Sometimes the liver may only become slightly enlarged, but it can also reach very large proportions, in which case it is described as grossly enlarged. Some have described the human liver as resembling a small American football in shape. It usually weighs between three and four pounds, or one and a half kilograms.

Medical professionals have a name for an enlarged liver. It is called hepatomegaly.

When the liver becomes enlarged, it is not considered a disease. It is more a symptom of some other liver problem.

An enlarged liver can occur for a number of reasons. The most frequently diagnosed causes include the following.

  • One of several forms of hepatitis.
  • Polycystic liver disease, which results when numerous cysts appear on the liver.
  • Infections in the liver caused by malaria, mononucleosis and a number of other diseases.
  • Liver cysts, or sac-like formations that grow on the liver. Some are empty, or they may be filled with watery fluid or mucous.
  • Cirrhosis, which is known to many people as cirrhosis of the liver. It occurs when the liver is scarred by disease or alcohol abuse.
  • Fatty liver syndrome (also known as fatty liver disease), which is characterized by a growing accumulation of fat in the liver. Poor diet is the most common cause. The build up of fat interferes with liver function.
  • Certain forms of cancer have been known to cause an enlarged liver. Leukemia is perhaps the most common of these.

Symptoms often depend on the degree of enlargement. A slightly enlarged liver won’t present any symptoms. But a grossly enlarged liver may cause abdominal fullness and some pain.

Symptoms of liver enlargement, when they do appear, could include any combination of the following.

  • Ascites, a disorder usually associated with serious kidney problems. It occurs when fluid builds up in the peritoneal cavity, which is the area between the abdominal lining and the organs in the abdomen.
  • Cholestasis, a condition in which the flow of bile from the liver through the bile ducts is obstructed.
  • Jaundice, a condition which causes the eyes and the skin to look yellowish. It results from an accumulation of a substance called bilirubin (pigment) in the blood.

It’s important to know the cause of an enlarged liver in order to determine the best course of treatment. If the cause is related to alcohol overuse, it’s important to stop drinking. Poor diet, obesity and lack of exercise are factors that contribute to liver enlargement. Your doctor will suggest some important lifestyle and nutritional changes.

Here are some common sense ways to avoid problems from an enlarged liver.

  • Reduce your drinking or avoid alcohol altogether, and never use alcohol at the same time you’re taking medications.
  • Similarly, take care to avoid consuming multiple medications. Be sure to observe dosage recommendations.
  • Don’t take herbal supplements unless you talk to your doctor about them. Some may harm your liver.
  • You should also discuss vitamin combinations with your doctor because certain combinations work against liver health. Combinations involving vitamins A, D, E and K may cause problems.
  • When using certain common household products, be sure the area is well-ventilated. Some insecticides, cleaners and aerosols can cause liver damage.
  • Above all, eat smart and get some exercise. Doing these two things alone will go a long way toward avoiding an enlarged liver and other liver problems.

It’s Insidious, It’s Fast and It’s Deadly – It’s Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis (HGE)

Canine Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis sounds scary, and is scary. If the signs and symptoms are not recognized and aggressive treatment are not taken immediately, its severe and sudden onset can be fatal.

The good news is, most dogs never get it. The bad news is, you don’t have much time should your dog get it. That is why it is important to know what to watch for, and what crucial actions you must take to save your dog’s life.

What is HGE?

Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis occurs when the lining of the intestines leaks. What is happening is fluid, red blood cells, and protein seep out of the blood vessels and into the bowels, causing nausea, bloody vomit, and profuse and explosive bleeding from the rectum. Your dog may never get it. They may get it once in their life, or it may become a chronic condition.

It is not contagious.

Who Gets HGE?

Dogs of any age, breed or either gender can get it. Toy and smaller breeds, for example, Dachshunds, Yorkshire Terriers, Miniature Poodles and Miniature Schnauzers between 2 and 4 years of age seem to be the preponderance of animals treated.

What makes this disease so insidious is the cause is unknown and there is no warning. There are numerous theories including, diet, bacterial toxin, intestinal parasites, normal or lower blood protein levels, and possibly even stress. Studies are also showing it seems to occur more in the spring.

Signs and Symptoms

This disease is fierce and progresses rapidly! The symptoms create a horrific mess! A perfectly healthy dog today, can be barely conscious in a puddle of blood by morning, then in shock in a matter of hours, and dead within 24 hours. It is vital for you to know what to watch for.

Symptoms include bloody, often explosive diarrhea, bloody vomit, both with an exceptionally foul odor. Most people who have dealt with HGE will agree, comparing it to “raspberry jam” is the best way to describe it.

Other signs and symptoms include rank smelling flatulence, lethargy, drooling, lack of appetite, dehydration, listlessness, depression, shock, and possibly death.

Your veterinarian will begin by eliminating the most obvious. They include parvovirus, blockage, intestinal intussusceptions (telescoping one part of the bowel into another) intestinal volvulus (twisting of the intestines), gastrointestinal ulcers, corona virus, colitis, poison, hook worms, whip worms, leptospirosis, giardiasis, low platelets, coccidiosis, malabsorbtion, and cancer.

They will also note the absence of fever and no decrease in white blood cells, as well as normal or lower blood protein levels. Dogs with HGE commonly have high Pack Cell Volume (PCV), usually 60% or more, (normal is 35-55%). PCV is the measure of blood thickness caused by dehydration.

Your veterinarian will ask you if you would prefer conservative or aggressive treatment. Do not waste time with conservative treatment. Insist on aggressive treatment. Your dog will remain in the hospital, with no food or water by mouth for 1-4 days. It also includes IV treatments with potassium, an anti-inflammatory and antibiotics to re-hydrate, help avoid shock, and prevent sepsis.

Your veterinarian may also change the protein in their diet. That means if they were on a predominately beef diet, it may be changed to chicken and/or lamb and possibly cottage cheese.

Your dog’s chance of survival is very good, if identified early and treated aggressively. Keep in mind, approximately 10-15% do have the risk for more than one episode.

Bottom line – Canine Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis can be fatal. Know the signs and symptoms, and take immediate and aggressive action. It could be the difference between life and death.

Eye Allergies: Causes and Symptoms

When life had begun to appear on earth, one of the first things to develop was the eyes. The importance of eyes for the survival of any species on the earth can be gauged from this fact. The defense mechanisms put up by the body to protect eyes are quite striking.

It includes the eyelids, eyelashes and the conjunctiva, which covers the eyeball. In spite of all this defense mechanism of the body, eyes continue to be one of the most sensitive organs in the human body and are always open to the attack of airborne

Eye Allergies: Overview

Eye allergies are one of the most common disorders of the eye, affecting an estimated 40 million Americans. There are two types of eye allergies that are most common: seasonal allergic conjunctivitis and perennial allergic conjunctivitis.

Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis usually occurs during the spring and fall. It’s triggered by outdoor allergens such as tree, grass and weed pollen.
Perennial allergic conjunctivitis persists throughout the year. It’s caused by constantly present indoor allergens such as dust, mold, animal hair and pet dander.

Are there other symptoms of eye allergies?

People with SAC usually note the onset of symptoms during the spring and fall, and frequently note symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Symptoms include itchy eyes, burning of the eyes, and eye watering. In some cases, people notice sensitivity to light and blurred vision.

The eyes are usually red and the eyelids may become swollen. When the inside of the eyelid (the conjunctiva) is also swollen, the eyes may have a watery, gelatinous-like appearance, this is called “chemosis”.
PAC typically occurs year-round, although many people notice some seasonal flares to their symptoms. The severity of PAC is less than that of SAC, and PAC is much more likely to be associated with perennial allergic rhinitis.

What causes eye allergies?
Eye allergies can occur alone or along with nasal allergy symptoms like a runny, itchy nose, nasal congestion or headache. They start when the body’s immune system overreacts to something that is ordinarily harmless. When the allergen comes in contact with the eye, there’s a reaction. The allergen causes cells in the eye to release histamine and other substances that cause blood vessels in the eyes to swell and to become itchy, red and watery.

If you have seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, the most common type of eye allergy, then grass, tree and weed pollens may trigger your eye allergies. Pet hair, dust mites and molds can also trigger symptoms for some people during the year.
