The Fundamental Difference Between Physiotherapy and Massage Therapy

There is a very common misunderstanding among the greater number of people about Physiotherapy and Massage therapy. It is not the same application and one cannot get all the benefits from both the therapies. Although both therapies can perform almost the same kind of functions. The below-discussed post sparks light on the fundamental difference between Physiotherapy and Massage therapy.

Massage and Physiotherapy

Massage therapy and Physiotherapy are both therapeutic applications widely used by thousands of professionals to enhance one’s well-being and to improve the body condition.

Comparison Between Massage and Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a well-known medical profession, which is applied by registered and licensed physiotherapists who provide care to their patients to get rid of different body injuries, pains and headaches, which may include therapy or therapeutic exercises. Some manual techniques also applied according to the condition of the patient. Whereas, massage therapy is nothing but an alternative medicine composed of structured body movements used to manipulate the body muscles as well as ligaments. Physiotherapists normally create tailored and individualized programs for each patient, in order to reinstate movement as well as function to the body. Age, body weight, diseases, and injuries are all such factors that cause the human body to have very limited movement.

Many treatments are there to revamp a person’s well-being, some therapeutic workout, manual techniques and functional training. However, many physiotherapists are specialized in pelvic floor reintegration, custom bracing, acupressure, acupuncture and myofascial release.

Advantages of Physiotherapy

There are several advantages of physiotherapy. It helps people who are suffering from back pain, neck pain, shoulder injuries, arthritis, sclerosis, wound, sprains, fractures and other body injuries related to regular work or sports. A physiotherapist also develops different programs to retrain function as well as limited movement, prevents any mobility loss prior to happens, minimizes body pain and prevents any disorders that one might have.

Advantages of Massage Therapy

Massage is nothing but a technique used by certified and licensed practitioners. It involves various techniques for moving someone’s muscles, soft tissues and relieving other body aches. The techniques of massage therapy may include, but are not limited to the rubbing, kneading, gliding, shaking, vibrating, compressing and sometimes active and passive stretching within the usual anatomical range of movement. Some of most common forms of massage therapy are Swedish massage, Trigger massage, Deep tissue massage, and Head massage applied by the majority of massage therapists around the world.

This therapy can treat various kinds of disorders. It also helps you relieve muscle stiffness, body aches, reduce pain and muscle spasm, boost your immunity, normalize your blood pressure, enhance your blood circulation, alleviate your discomfort, ache felt during pregnancy and can boost your athletic performance. Massage therapy can help you recover from intense workout sessions. It is also good for managing one’s anxiety, headache, and depression.

Last, but certainly not the least, Physiotherapy is specially done after complete medical examination, physical evaluation and diagnosis as well as physical intervention. On the other hand, Massage therapy is nothing but a generic, hands-on-techniques usually employed for the purpose of fatigue, balancing work life, relaxation, stress management, removing body ache and for a “feel good” thing.

Both the therapies sometimes used for restoring soft tissue function, relieving muscle pain, decreasing tension and spasm to enhance the physical as well as athletic performance. It is widely used to promote healing. A qualified and licensed health care provider only can advise you to select the appropriate therapy, be it Massage therapy or Physiotherapy that most fit your needs.

t New Tip for Sprained Ankle Treatment

I’ve been a sports training and conditioning coach for over 20 years. I have worked with numerous high school, varsity and pro sportsmen. I have seen a lot of coaching fads appear and vanish, but latterly there was a big revolution in how we understand the body and the way to get the absolute best results. I keep an unfettered mind and try to make sure I keep up to date with new ideas out there relating to coaching and rehab for my athletes. When I find something I like, I always attempt to share that info so others can also get the benefit.

For an ordinary sort of twist, probably grades 1-2, my sportsmen required a good 2-3 weeks until they were walking without discomfort and then an additional 1-2 weeks at least before they could play ball again. Since a sprained ankle is a reasonably common occurrence and it caused a minimum of a month of rehab, I wanted to find a better rehabilitation system for getting them back to sports far faster.

I began asking around with some other pros and one of them discussed an ankle rehabilitation system he had used with great success called H.E.M. I started doing some research on it and decided to try it with one of my school athletes. Based on previous sprains of this type, I’d have predicted him to require about 4-6 weeks for recovery time. System for his ankle and inside five days, he came walking into my office without any sort of a limp. He told me there wasn’t any pain anymore, but he had a little rigidity. I looked at the ankle and it was still a little bruised and swollen, but apart from that, it looked incredibly good considering it had only been five days.

He came back 5 days later and the ankle seemed to be 100%. There was no swelling or bruising and he was able to play basketball at full speed. However what really dazzled me was the indisputable fact that the H.E.M. System also has a prehab section in it. I have found that not only have my sportsmen significantly reduced the amount of ankle sprains over the last few months, but the ones that do get the injury, recover extremely fast. Further, I have recently realized that many of my athletes have gone up their lateral speed and vertical jump ability.
in brief I’ve been extraordinarily impressed by the the H.E.M. System with all of my sportsmen and I strongly recommend it for anyone hoping to improve their performance and recover quickly and correctly from a twisted ankle injury.

What Every Man Should Know About Prostate Massage

Prostate massage is a beneficial technique that many men don’t know much about. This gentle stimulation of the prostate gland, an organ located between the rectum and bladder, can help relieve the symptoms of several ailments and improve sexual health. Massaging the prostate is relatively easy, but it’s important to do it properly to avoid injury and other complications. Here are a few things you should know about the prostate and the process of massage.

What the Prostate Does

This gland is responsible for regulating much of male sexual function. It produces prostatic fluid, an important component of semen and a contributor to higher fertility. It also contains muscles that help push semen out of the body during ejaculation. The prostate helps men experience more satisfying sexual experiences and can be an important component in sexual dysfunctions such as loss of erection or ejaculatory problems. It is affected strongly by the testosterone levels produced in the testes.

Massage and Prostatitis

Like many other parts of the body, the prostate can become infected with bacteria. Because this organ is made up of many tiny sacs filled with fluid, it can swell and become closed off as the infection progresses. This can make it hard to urinate, cause pain in the pelvis and result in a build-up of prostatic fluid. Prostatitis can be extremely uncomfortable. Doctors usually give you antibiotics to treat it; but they don’t always work. That’s because your body can close off the infected prostate, keeping away the helpful effects of the drugs.

In cases like these, doctors sometimes recommend massaging the gland, either internally via the rectum, or externally via the perineum. By applying gentle pressure to the prostate gland, you can relieve swelling, cut down on blockages, and reduce discomfort. A massage can be performed either by a doctor or other medical professional, or at home by yourself.

No matter who does the massage, it’s important to use this technique only for chronic prostatitis, a recurring problem that may not be affected by medication. Using massage techniques for acute prostatitis can actually make the condition worse. It might even spread the infection beyond the prostate, causing more serious problems elsewhere in the body.

Massage and Prostate Cancer

Regular prostate massage can also help reduce a man’s risk of getting prostate cancer. This is because a healthier prostate leads to easier and healthier ejaculations. Studies have shown that ejaculating regularly can help men avoid cancer, especially as they get older. Men who experienced ejaculation just 21 times per month in their 40s had only about 60 percent as much cancer risk as less active men. By the time this group was 50 years old, their chances of getting cancer were less than half of those experienced by men who ejaculated less frequently.

Massage techniques are also used by doctors attempting to determine whether their patients will require prostate cancer treatment. The standard digital rectal examination, or DRE, that detects cancer involves carefully manipulating this gland. Gentle massage may even help men who are suffering from the discomfort associated with prostate tumors. If you’re undergoing prostate cancer treatment, however, you should always ask your doctor before choosing massage. Excessively vigorous massage of the prostate can actually make the situation worse. It can spread cancerous cells elsewhere in the body and increase the risk of metastasis.

Taking Precautions

While getting a prostate massage is usually beneficial, that doesn’t mean that you can’t suffer from problems if it’s done incorrectly. If you’re performing your own prostate massages, it’s important to go very slowly and to use only tools that are made for the purpose. These include medical prostate massagers and aids advertised for “P-spot” stimulation. They don’t include cheap toys with no base or handle, household items, or any other makeshift devices. Administering a prostate massage poorly could result in a trip to the emergency room.

If you’re receiving prostate massage from someone else, make sure you choose a medical professional or someone else you can trust. People without experience may massage too vigorously. Rough massages can lead to bruising, bleeding and other health problems. They can aggravate hemorrhoids and even cause some infections. When in doubt, go gently; gentle massage produces the best results.

It’s also a good idea to make sure you have a bowel movement before receiving prostate massage. You may also wish to have an enema if you are extremely worried about cleanliness. Use plenty of lubricant to ensure comfort and reduce the risk of damage to the delicate membranes of the anus and rectum. If you use your fingers for stimulation, cut your nails carefully before you begin. You may find the sensations produced by prostate massage to be very intense; if you experience discomfort, discontinue the massage or use a more gentle technique.

External Massage

Internal massage isn’t the only option for men who want to avoid future prostatitis or prostate cancer treatments. Some men can also experience the benefits of prostate stimulation through the perineum, or the area between the testes and anus. It may be necessary to use an electric massager or more pressure to produce sensations in this area. Some men do not receive any benefit from external massage. It does, however, help people who experience excessively intense sensations from internal massage, who are uncomfortable with the idea, or who find internal massage painful. It can also be a good option for beginners who aren’t comfortable with internal massage initially.

No matter who you are, if you have a prostate, you could probably benefit from regular massage. Stimulating this gland is an excellent way for all men to improve their sexual health, feel better on a day to day basis, and avoid serious problems later on in life. Research shows that gentle prostate massage can benefit people with enlarged prostates, men who want to reduce their risk of cancer, patients who suffer from pelvic discomfort and men who are suffering from sexual difficulties. Just take the time to learn about the correct technique or talk to a medical professional before you start.

Can Stress Cause Ovarian Cysts?

With stress being seen as a major cause of sickness and bad health in our society those suffering from painful cysts are now asking can stress cause ovarian cysts? Can the pressures of modern life make a direct impact on the formation and enlargement of cysts in the ovaries?

The answer can be a complex one but in my opinion the answer is yes and no. No they are not the root cause of ovarian cysts but yes they play a major part in the complex processes that lead to enlarged and painful cysts. Let’s look a bit closer:

Stress has a major effect on our bodies and mental outlook. IT has been linked to lower immune system response and of course it psychologically saps your motivation and positive outlook.

However there is a more direct link between ovarian cysts and stress because of a hormone called pregnenolone. This is a hormone that is produced in large amounts when the body is under a large amount of stress for prolonged periods of time. This is a needed hormone because it helps the body and mind deal with stress but when too much of it is produced it leads to problems.

When the female body is flooded with pregnenolone it clogs up the pathways used by your other hormones that are used to control your menstrual cycle. Too much or too little estrogen and other hormones lead to cysts forming and continuing to grow as the delicate balance of your internal systems are messed around.

Natural Remedies for Black Eye

The first home remedy for black eye is to get something cold on the eye immediately after it has been struck. The cold will help relieve the swelling of the eye. Your best choice would be a bag of ice. If a bag of ice is not available, a cold can of soda or a bag of frozen vegetables will work. However, it isn’t recommended that you put steak on your eye… like you see on television. Raw meat does nothing to help heal a black eye!

Besides ice for 20 minutes on & off, elevate the head, even when sleeping. Arnica, pellets by mouth and topical cream, is a wonderful plant remedy that treats the pain & bruising and can be used liberally with absolutely no side effects. Don’t use aspirin, as it’s anti-coagualant effects can prolong/spread the buising .Arnica oil ( Arnica in olive oil is the most potent form, but will stain clothing so is best used at night). It is all available at health food stores. Take good care of yourself.

Treat a black eye using a potato – For those of you who keep their potatoes in the fridge this is a good remedy for a black or bruised eyes. Peel the potato and cut a round slice just under half a cm thick. Lay down for half an hour with a slice of cold potato over your eyes. This works great.

A beefy semi frozen steak is still the best remedy. The vitamins in the meat help. or pack ice in a plastic bag keep area covered for at least 1hr and the black eye never materializes. Depending on severity of the injury may require as long as 2 days for swelling or fractures of the face. but guaranteed no black eye if catch it within a 1/2 hour of injury and you keep the area well below body temperature long enough.

The person is not sleeping well at night permanently will likely to get black eyes. Even though you think you are when you do not dream in the sleep. Deep and restful sleep is the only way to cure black eyes. Sleeping pills will make worse. The only cure will be from alternative remedy, rest for 15 minutes without thinking about anything or practice meditate before bed time. You have really set your mind to do it.

As soon as you get a black eye, head for the refrigerator and place something cold on your eye. The best solution will be a bag of ice. However, if you cannot lay your hands on the same, a cold can of soda or a bag of frozen vegetables will work as good. The cold treatment will prevent your eye from swelling. Continue the treatment for at least one day.

Peel and grate a potato (a red potato is best). Make a poultice out of it and keep it on the black eye for 20 minutes. Potassium chloride is one of the most effective healing compounds, and potatoes are the best source of potassium chloride. (This remedy is also beneficial for bloodshot eyes.)

Can Frottage Lead to an Itchy Penis?

Clearly, penetrative intercourse is one of the most pleasurable sexual activities around, but there is definitely something to be said for a little frottage. Like any form of direct-contact sexual activity, there are some risks to penis health that can be associated with frottage – and an itchy penis is one of them. Fortunately, taking a little extra care can often help keep the frottaged penis from descending into the realm of the itchy penis.

What is frottage?

If a person wants to be 100% technically correct, frottage refers to any kind of non-penetrative sexual activity in which the genitals of one partner are rubbed against or otherwise stimulated by any body part of another partner. Under this definition, a person being masturbated by another person (thereby engaging in hand-to-penis stimulation) would be engaging in frottage, as would a man whose penis brushed repeatedly against a partner’s thigh or breasts.

In practice, however, frottage is usually reserved for occasions in which there is non-penetrative genital-to-genital contact. So if two men rub their penises together, or a man rubs his penis against a woman’s vagina, they would be practicing frottage.

Is it safe?

The question often arises as to whether or not frottage is considered safe sex. The answer really depends upon the way in which safe sex is defined. For example, it is very unlikely (though not impossible) to contract HIV through bare-genital frottage. The practice is also not considered high risk for transmission of STIs like syphilis either. (Although again, it is not impossible for such transmission – and using condoms decreases the likelihood even further.)

However, there are a number of STIs that are more commonly associated with frottage. These include herpes, warts, scabies and chancroids. (Again, the use of condoms can reduce the risk of such infections.)

The itchy penis question

There also are more “benign” issues that could result from frottage, including those that can bring about an itchy penis condition. Some possible causes could be:

– Yeast. Rubbing a bare penis against another penis with thrush or against a vagina with a yeast infection can easily allow the infection to be passed on to a previously-clean penis.

– Latex allergy. If one partner wears a condom and the other does not, the latex may cause an allergic reaction if the bare penis is especially sensitive. In some cases, even if the penis does not have an allergy to latex, the condom may simply rub the delicate penis skin the wrong way.

– Contact dermatitis. An itchy penis and accompanying rash can easily develop on a penis that rubs against another penis or a vagina that has been exposed to harsh chemicals from soaps, detergents, perfumes, etc. If a metal cock ring is involved, or if the partner penis or vagina contains piercings that house metal components, the penis may react with a “rash” thanks to the friction caused by the metal.

Those who are worried about getting an itchy penis from frottage can take some precautions. Wearing a condom (if one is not allergic to it) is always a good option for minimizing itch. Bathing the partner’s genitals with a non-allergenic soap and water mix can be fun as well as a good way to remove any potential itch-causing chemicals. And above all, ask if the partner has any issues (e.g., an STI, a yeast infection, etc.) before engaging in sexual play.

If frottage does lead to an itchy penis for simple dermatological reasons, know that using a superior penis health crème (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil, which is clinically proven mild and safe for skin) can help to alleviate the itchiness. Be sure to find a crème that contains a dynamic duo of moisturizers, such as a high end emollient (Shea butter is excellent) and a natural hydrator (simple vitamin E works well). Well-moisturized skin is less prone to itchiness. If the crème contains pantothenic acid (also called vitamin B5), so much the better. Pantothenic acid is used in products that fight eczema and other skin rashes, so it can help decrease the need to scratch the penis as well.

Manual Dermasanding – The Delicate Touch in Facial Resurfacing

The idea of abrading skin to improve appearance is nothing new. Dermabrasion, a surgical skin planing technique using a high-speed rotary abrasive instrument, has enjoyed popularity for more than fifty years. More recently, however, manual dermasanding or gentle skin “buffing,” with or without the addition of a mild chemical peeling agent, has in many instances replaced the earlier rotary abrasive method for treating a wide variety of scars, wrinkles, and complexion and pigment problems. The sanding action improves contour irregularities when a new layer of skin replaces the abraded skin. The result is a smoother, fresher, and more lustrous appearance.

Manual buffing has proven especially useful for treating the delicate skin around the eyes, nose and lips, areas much more difficult to treat with conventional high-speed rotary dermabrasion. There is also no blood splatter, which is typical of the latter procedure, significantly reducing the concern about possible spread of HIV and hepatitis infections. Buf-peels should not be confused with microdermabrasion, which is a much more superficial form of skin sanding. Although far less expensive than laser resurfacing, and with a generally shorter recuperation time, buf-peels can offer a reasonable alternative and often yield results that can be equally gratifying.

Uses of Buf-Peels

When dermabrasion was first developed, it was used predominantly to improve acne scars, pock marks, and scars resulting from accidents or disease. Today, skin sanding methods are routinely used to treat tattoos, age (liver) spots, wrinkles, “frown” and “worry” lines, as well as certain other types of skin lesions.

As with other resurfacing techniques, conditions for which dermasanding would not be effective include the presence of congenital skin defects, certain types of moles or pigmented birthmarks, and scars from burns.

What’s Involved

Buffing is an office-based procedure. Medication to relax the patient may be given prior to surgery and supplemented with the use of topical or local anesthesia to numb the treatment sites. Then a sterilized abrasive material is used to gently buff or abrade the upper layers of the skin to improve the surface irregularities. In “buff-peeling,” the buffing is either preceded or followed by the application of a chemical peeling agent, usually a low concentration of trichloroacetic acid, to further enhance skin smoothing.

What To Expect Afterward

For a few days, the skin feels as though it has been overly sun-burned, and medications may be prescribed for discomfort, such as Lida Mantle cream or Lida Mantle HC cream. Healing usually occurs within seven days for buffed skin and seven to ten days for buf-peeled areas.

Newly formed skin, which is pink and slightly swollen at first, gradually develops a normal appearance. In the majority of cases, the pinkness fades by six to eight weeks. Regular make-up can be used as a cover-up as soon as the crusts are off. Most people can resume their normal work or social routines in seven to fourteen days. Individuals are instructed to avoid unnecessary direct and indirect sunlight for three to six months after the procedure and to use a sunscreen on a regular basis when outdooors.

Possible Complications

In certain skin types, there is a risk of developing a temporary or permanent color change in the skin. Taking birth control pills, pregnancy, or a family history of brownish discoloration on the face may increase the possibility of developing abnormal pigmentation.

Although low, there is a risk of scarring in certain areas of the face and particular individuals may be more prone to scarring. If scarring does occur, it can usually be treated with good results.

Limitations of Buffing and Buff-Peeling

Buffing and buff-peeling cannot significantly tighten loose or sagging skin and are not intended to replace face lift, brow lift, or eye lift procedures.

Buffing will not remove certain deep scars. Punch grafting, punch elevation, scar excision, dermaspacing or soft tissue fillers may be much more effective either alone or in combination with buff-peeling.

Finally, buffing and buff-peeling may not necessarily change pore size in all cases, nor can they predictably remove broken blood vessels on the face. However, they may improve the appearance of these conditions.

What are the Causes of Peptic Ulcers?

The direct cause of peptic ulcers is the destruction of the gastric or intestinal mucosal lining of the stomach by hydrochloric acid, an acid normally present in the digestive juices of the stomach. Infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori is thought to play an important role in causing both gastric and duodenal ulcers. Helicobacter pylori may be transmitted from person to person through contaminated food and water. Antibiotics are the most effective treatment for Helicobacter pylori peptic ulcers.

For many years, excess acid was believed to be the major cause of ulcer disease. Accordingly, treatment emphasis was on neutralizing and inhibiting the secretion of stomach acid. While acid is still considered significant in ulcer formation, the leading cause of ulcer disease is currently believed to be infection of the stomach by a bacteria called “Helicobacter pyloridus” (H. pylori). Another major cause of ulcers is the chronic use of anti-inflammatory medications, commonly referred to as NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), including aspirin.

Your body makes strong acids that digest food. A lining protects the inside of your stomach and duodenum from these acids. If the lining breaks down, the acids can damage the walls. Both H. pylori and NSAIDs weaken the lining so acid can reach the stomach or duodenal wall.

Some people who have peptic ulcers can eat whatever they want with no problems. For many others, however, eating certain foods can cause irritation, excessive acid production, and heartburn. For them, they need to know what foods are safe, and what foods to avoid. They need to know how to prepare foods to avoid ingredients that will cause a flare-up of their symptoms. If you are a ulcer patient and need to make some dietary changes, the following resources will get you started.

Almost all peptic ulcers occur in people taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or those infected with Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori). NSAIDs are anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin, naproxen, and ibuprofen. H. Pylori is a bacterium that has adapted to living on the surface lining of the stomach. H. Pylori and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories impair the ability of the stomach and duodenum to protect themselves from acid and pepsin and are thus predisposed to ulcer formation.

H. pylori lives and multiplies within the mucous layer that covers and protects tissues that line the stomach and small intestine. Often, H. pylori causes no problems. But sometimes it can disrupt the mucous layer and inflame the lining of the stomach or duodenum, producing an ulcer. One reason may be that people who develop peptic ulcers already have damage to the lining of the stomach or small intestine, making it easier for bacteria to invade and inflame tissues.

Besides peptic ulcer’s main causes, several predisposing factors are acknowledged. They include blood type (gastric ulcers tend to strike people with type A blood; duodenal ulcers tend to afflict people with type O blood) and other genetic factors. Exposure to irritants, such as alcohol, coffee, and tobacco, may contribute by accelerating gastric acid emptying and promoting mucosal breakdown. Ulceration occurs when the acid secretion exceeds the buffering factors. Physical trauma, emotional stress, and normal aging are additional predisposing conditions.

Emotional stress is no longer thought to be a cause of ulcers, but people who are experiencing emotional stress often report increased pain of existing ulcers. Physical stress, however, is different. It can increase the risk of developing ulcers, especially in the stomach. Examples of physical stress that can lead to ulcers are that suffered by people with injuries such as severe burns, and people undergoing major surgery.

Tendinitis – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Tendinitis is inflammation or irritation of a tendon, which is a thick, fibrous chord that attaches muscles to bone. Common symptoms include pain, tenderness and mild swelling. The pain is usually located near a joint and is aggravated by movement. Depending upon the location, tendinitis produces specific types of pain such as tennis elbow on the outer side of the elbow; Achilles tendinitis just above the heel; adductor tendinitis in the groin; patellar tendinitis just below the knee cap; and rotator cuff tendinitis in the shoulder. Injury, over use, and inflammation of the tendon are the usual causes of tendinitis.

The Ayurvedic treatment of tendinitis is aimed at treating the damage to the tendon, reducing inflammation and promoting healing. Commonly used medicines for this purpose are: Triphala-Guggulu, Trayo-Dashang-Guggulu, Yograj-Guggulu, Maha-Rasnadi-Guggulu, Maha-Rasnadi-Qadha, Maha-Vat-Vidhwans-Ras, Ekangveer-Ras and Agnitundi-Ras.

Herbal medicines used for this purpose are: Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata), Deodar (Cedrus deodara), Vishwa (Zinziber officinalis), Dashmool (Ten roots), Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica), Tagar (Valeriana wallichii) and Guggulu (Commiphora mukul). Patients who do not respond to these medicines are given other medicines like Kaishor-Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Laxadi-Guggulu, Maha-Yograj-Guggulu, Tapyadi-Loh, Agnitundi-Ras and Trivang-Bhasma.

For local application on the affected parts, medicated oils like Mahanarayan oil, Chandan-Bala-Laxadi oil, Mahamash oil and Vishgarbha oil are used. Medicated steam fomentation of the affected parts is done using decoctions of Nirgundi and Dashmool. This procedure is called ‘Naadi-Sweda’. A few patients with persistent swelling in the tendons may respond to other procedures like localized blood-letting using leeches.

For most people, tendinitis usually disappears within a matter of a few weeks or months, with adequate rest and the appropriate treatment. Aggravating factors at the work place or in sports activities need to be identified and suitably modified, to facilitate early recovery and avoid recurrence.

The American Version of Roman "Feather-Tickling"

When I attended elementary school, we were taught that wealthy ancient Romans would tickle the back of their throat with a feather to induce vomiting after dinner. Although that ritual probably put a damper on any postprandial romance (unless mouthwash was provided with the meal), it allowed them to engage in their greatest delight – eating more food. Whether or not that custom is mythical, it does bring to mind similar, modern practices of many Americans today.

I sometimes ask insulin-dependent diabetics a simple, yet revealing question. If they could give up all food except some basic green vegetables for one month, and by doing so, cure themselves of their diabetes, would they do it? Sadly, the answer is always a resounding “no.” They explained to me that they are unwilling to deny themselves any food. Rather than monitor their diet, they prefer to inject themselves with additional insulin when required.

I was with a friend once late at night, and we stopped for a bite to eat after a movie. He suffered from heartburn and acid reflux, and wondered aloud whether it was too late to take a prescription pill for his condition. He pondered his choices for a moment, and then confidently popped the pill into his mouth. He then proceeded to order cheese fries, a bacon cheeseburger, and some onion rings – despite the lateness of the hour. Surprised by his decision, I asked him why he didn’t just avoid those foods, and order something lighter and easier to digest. He gazed at me incredulously, and then explained that was the purpose of the pills. I suggested that he should forego another tub of greasy, buttered popcorn on the next movie night. It might save him a pill.

Fried foods, trans-fats, sugary desserts, and salty snacks – why avoid them when a simple pill will counter their deleterious effects? People I know would prefer to take medication for their high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes. We can actually alleviate most of these health conditions – and even physical pain, insomnia, and arthritis – by altering dietary intake. However, few people will deny themselves the foods that they enjoy.

When it comes to weight loss, nearly everyone tries over-the-counter diet pills before sacrificing that extra helping of greasy fries or a sweet, tempting dessert. When those pills fail, many turn to prescription medicine for weight loss. In addition, as I noted in my article, “The Truth About Weight Loss,” many people prefer to endure grueling exercise regimens that they dread and hate, rather than deny themselves the foods whispering their sweet names as they pass by the refrigerator. Incidentally, my refrigerator has an alluring, female, British accent. Still haven’t gotten her name though. The decision to exercise and ignore diet is usually a losing proposition, because it’s difficult to lose weight on a treadmill with a milk shake in one hand, and a chicken wrap in the other.

For people who are extremely overweight, some prefer to undergo operations like gastric banding, liposuction, gastric bypass, or stomach stapling instead of altering their diet. Whatever the ailment, Americans prefer to pop pills, exercise their jiggling belly away, or undergo surgery, despite the fact that all operations pose some risk, and nearly every drug has side effects.

Centuries ago, Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” So, we have long known the association between a healthy diet and good health. But it’s been either forgotten or purposefully ignored in modern society.

Historians still debate whether Roman nobility actually used feathers to induce vomiting. After all, vomiting is hardly an enjoyable experience. And, I imagine one’s appetite would be a bit suppressed afterwards – especially if your seat is nearest the vomitorium.

Today, too many American’s are willing to endure nearly any level of suffering to lose their excess weight – except sacrificing the foods that they love. It might not be as unsettling as tickling the back of the throat with a feather, but the result is eerily similar.

Various Causes Of Infertility – How To Spot The Signs

Reproduction is one of the more important mechanisms, that we humans are equipped of. In the absence of this, some of us may consider the valuable loss of life. This is probably why once a couple does not conceive within a 1-year period of unprotected sexual intercourse, they become anxious that they may be subject to infertility.

In fact, the symptom of not conceiving in 1 year alone is one good basis for diagnosing infertility. There is not much that the medical community hasn’t unraveled yet when it comes to infertility. This article will focus on the causes of infertility for both men and women.

Causes of Female Infertility

Endometriosis- this is a condition characterized by the growth of the endometrial tissue outside the uterus. This tissue is the substance women discharge during menstruation.

Ovulation problem- a condition that arises from abnormality in the release of hormones that drive the release of mature eggs from the ovaries.

Poor egg quality- the weakness or damage in the egg cells usually characterizes poor egg quality. Age is primarily the root cause since as women mature, their eggs mature with them. This condition eventually leads to menopause.

Polycystic ovary syndrome- formation of small cysts in the ovaries may be the result of irregular ovulation or hormonal imbalances.

Female tube blockages- once the passage of the eggs towards the uterus or the sperm towards the ovaries is blocked, conception would be impossible since the meeting of the two cells won’t facilitate. Causes of this condition may be pelvic inflammatory disease and several forms of sexually transmitted disease.

Causes of Male Infertility

Male tube blockages- this may occur either at the epididymis or the vas deferens, both of which are sperm passages. However, varicoceles located at the testicles account for the leading cause of this condition.

Sperm problems- this could be anything from the absence of sperm cells to low sperm count along with poor sperm quality and sperm deformation.

Sperm allergy- this may the product of the immune system’s reaction towards any phenomenon that attracts brain signals sending the reaction of the system. Men usually experience this after having vasectomy.

Combination of Female and Male Factors- This occurs when both couples present conditions that may be identified as causes of infertility.

Unexplained Infertility- This probably is the catch-all of causes when physicians don’t find any results after conducting intensive study of the case.

Signs To Watch Out For:

The most definite and obvious sign of infertility is the weakness of a person or a couple to conceive a child within a period of a year of unprotected sexual intercourse.

Though that may be quite simple, the struggles that this sign entails create dramatic changes in a couple’s life. In most cases, people have no knowledge that they are actually patients of infertility. The main reason- the lack of immediate symptoms.

Infertility by nature is a condition that does not deal with the physical-external make-up of the person affected by it. There are no external measures and symptoms that we may conduct and observe when examining if a person is infertile. In fact, before any diagnosis is made pertaining to infertility one has to undergo a series of extensive examinations, physical tests and other techniques which themselves are very taxing.

In case that the couple was able to conceive yet have undergone multiple miscarriages, they probably may fall under the category of infertility. However, it would still be safe if they consult a physician first for further analysis of their case.

If you are experiencing the absence of menstrual bleeding yet the results of pregnancy test tells you that you are not pregnant, then you might be a patient of infertility. If this condition prevails for some months it is likely that something in your reproductive system is impaired.

Once you experience pain somewhere in your pelvic area, it would be best that you disclose this with a physician. Abnormal pain may be caused by conditions like endometriosis and internal infections.

Watch out for basal temperatures. These are good indications that your system may be having some troubles. Abnormal rise or fall of basal body temperature is linked with hormonal imbalances that concern mostly the hormones needed for ovulation.

Say if your basal body temperature is low while undergoing the first part of your cycle that may indicate too high estrogen release in your body. Meanwhile, high basal body temperature at this stage could possibly indicate low progesterone.

Anovulation may be indicated through the absence of upward shifting of the basal body temperature. On the other end of the scale, male infertility seems to posses no clear signs except the obvious- erectile dysfunction.

This condition is characterized by the inability to create erection, which may be contributed largely by the abnormalities in the blood vessels, specifically those found in the penis. Diseases and conditions like stroke, abuse of alcohol, and major problems in the circulatory system may also cause Erectile Dysfunction.

Double Dead Meat – Food To Avoid In The Philippines

Double dead meat, aka hot meat, is a Filipino term designating meat or poultry sold in markets, which have already died from disease before having been cut up. The term botcha is also used interchangeably with double dead meat. The term is said to originate from two Chinese words bot and cha, which means “do not eat”.

The source of hot meat that has been circulating the country is still uncertain. However, past accounts of smuggling from China would tell us that the issue is not something new anymore. It must be recalled that, among others, a shipment of double dead meat from China was stored at the Customs warehouse and found its way to a meat processing company in Pampanga. In any event, the issue of the proliferation of double dead meat in various markets all over the Philippines has been plaguing the country just recently, especially since majority of the Filipinos are meat lovers.

The distinguishing characteristics of meat being double dead are: foul smell, pale color with greenish-gray or bluish hue, dark hide, hair remain stuck to the meat’s fat albeit having been dipped in boiling water, sticky and slippery. To be sure, the buyer should avoid buying frozen meat kept in boxes and those that are sold in unusually low prices. Instead, the buyer must look out for meat with pinkish or reddish color with some traces of blood, signifying that it is fresh.

Instead of being displayed in markets, the meat should be properly disposed of and burned. The health repercussions of consuming the meat of a sick animal are readily apparent. First, the nature of the disease is unknown, not to mention the medication administered to the animal. Second, a dead animal is likely to contain germs, microorganisms and some unknown parasites which could be absorbed by humans when the animal’s meat is consumed, notwithstanding that the same is cooked. Thus, the person suffers from severe diarrhea and food poisoning.

As a precaution, the public is advised by the government to buy meat only from their trusted meat vendors with licensed outlets certified by the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS). This certification should be posted on the vendor’s stall or establishment. Moreover, the purchaser should see a NMIS inspection mark on the meat before buying one.

Finally, the public must be aware that the sale of hot meat is strictly contrary to the Meat Inspection Code, as well as the Consumer Act of the Philippines and other local ordinances, and is penalized by imprisonment. Thus, the public is urged to immediately report to the local officials any knowledge of the presence of these double meat traders and of their activities.

Getting Your Gallbladder Out: When You Should and What to Expect

Just beneath your liver, tucked away in a lonely back alley of your abdomen, lies one of the smallest organs in your body: your gallbladder. If you’re like most people, you spend very little time thinking about your gallbladder. As long as it’s doing its job (storing gall – what are the odds?), you probably don’t think about it at all. It’s not pretty; it’s not a glamour organ like your liver or brain; in fact, it’s not even a vital organ. (The next time someone fires a gun at you, try to position yourself so that your gallbladder takes the bullet.)

But just let something go wrong with the little bugger! Suddenly, your humble gallbladder becomes the center of the universe. Whether the problem is obstruction of the bile duct, thickening of the gallbladder wall, or the ever-popular gallstones, a gallbladder attack is certain to send you scurrying to your surgeon’s office in search of relief from the agonizing pain.

But just what is a gallbladder?

“Basically, it’s an organ that aids in the digestive process by concentrating the bile produced by your liver,” explains Jason Harrison, M.D, a board-certified surgeon who performs general surgery in Arlington, Texas. “Bile is the liquid that breaks up and smooths out the fats in the food you eat – it also cancels out the acids in partly digested food,” he says. By concentrating bile and passing it on to your digestive tract, it helps you digest rich foods more easily.

Unfortunately, the gallbladders of some people also concentrate calcium and other minerals, producing gallstones, which can seriously harm your health as well as cause agonizing pain. And of course your gallbladder is susceptible to the usual range of internal organ illnesses. Whatever problem you’re having with your gallbladder, an experienced general surgeon can probably fix it – and with less discomfort and hassle than you might expect.

Let’s say something goes haywire and you have to have your gallbladder out – a procedure called a cholecystectomy. (In fact, each year more than half a million Americans have gallbladder surgery.) Here’s what to expect: After an overnight fast, you arrive at the hospital, where you’ll be anesthetized and prepared for surgery.

“Most gallbladder surgery can be performed laparoscopically through a few small incisions in the abdomen, instead of accessing the stomach cavity through one large incision,” says Dr. Harrison. Once these “keyholes” are made, the surgeon will insert a video camera and a set of tiny surgical instruments into your body, then separate and remove the gallbladder through one of the keyholes. Barring the unforeseen, you’ll be in and out of surgery in an hour or so.

And that’s it. Since the laparoscopic procedure does not require cutting the abdominal muscles, you hurt less, heal faster, have fewer complications, and don’t scar as badly as you would from traditional types of “open” surgery. You also almost always get to go home the same day of your surgery as well, with only a single follow-up visit to make sure that you are doing well. Your doctor may even give you your gallstones, if you want ‘em!

Despite its droll function and unimpressive appearance, your gallbladder is important – not vital, but important just the same. Take care of your gallbladder. Treasure it. And, if something goes wrong, call Dr. Jason Harrison at Harrison General Surgery in Arlington. He’ll have you back on your feet and digesting in no time.

Reviving Kidneys Through Ayurveda Medicine

Kidneys can be revived! Ayurveda medicine, which is becoming more acceptable and popular in the Western world, recommends the use of herbs which can be used for all stages of kidney illness. These herbs helps patients avoid dialysis and are also good for kidney failure. They can also be taken with Western medicine treatments.

Ayurveda medicine uses herbs that lower increased urea and creatinine levels and address kidney failure symptoms like edema or swelling. Kidney failure happens when the kidneys can no longer filter toxins and other waste products. Diseases and persistent use of some drugs cause kidney failure.

Watching Protein and Potassium Levels

A protein diet of 50-100 mgs a day is always recommended to improve protein levels in the blood. Higher protein levels will cause higher urea and creatinine levels resulting to added strain to an already hurting kidney. Your nephrologist and renal dietician can help you draft a meal plan that’s good for the kidney’s health.

On the other hand, potassium imbalance also leads to renal failure. However, this is not due to the consumption of too much potassium from fruits and vegetables – but through the inability of the kidneys to remove excess potassium from the blood.

To revive kidneys, protein and potassium intake should be watched. Natural diuretics can be used such as Corn Silk, Punarnava, Tribulus, Varun and Asparugus, among others. Additionally, these natural diuretics do not have high potassium levels, help the body regain strength, assist liver functions, and cure anemia.

A combination of these herbs revives the kidneys and restores their normal functions.

Ayurvedic Herbs for Kidney Revival

Tribulus, Punarnava and Varun are recommended herbs for kidney failure and high levels of urea and creatinine. Tribulus-terrestris or Gokshur-Gokhru helps in urinary disorder, urinary stones, hypertension and diabetes. It reduces high blood pressure and sodium and fluid retention. Additionally, it also improves libido by increasing the motility and number of spermatozoa. This herb also helps alleviate symptoms associated with male menopause.

Similarly, Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) helps patients with kidney failure, kidney stones, oedema or swelling and urinary tract infections (UTI). This herb restores dying cells and revives dying organs. Punarnava removes harmful toxins and heals damages caused by drugs. Furthermore, this herb can be taken as iron supplements, and thus cures anemia resulting from poor kidney function. It is also an herbal diuretic.

Meanwhile Varun (Crataeva Nurvela) is also used in Ayurveda medicine to help those with kidney stone, benign prostate enlargement and UTI. This herb is an effective remedy for urinary tract obstructions.

Ayurveda medicine also recommends Chicory roots and Corn Silk are for kidney failure and high levels of urea and creatinine.

Chicory roots are a diuretic which stimulates renal function by eliminating corporal fluids. These roots are helpful to those with water retention problems, are obese or diabetic, or have rheumatic illnesses or gout. It also aids in blood circulation by making the blood more fluid, and is thus good for patients with hypertension. Diabetes and hypertension causes kidney diseases.

Another herb recommended for kidney problems by Ayurveda medicine is Corn Silk, which is the yellowish strands found inside corn husks. Corn Silk is used to treat bladder problems, renal and cystic inflammation. Corn Silk has excellent cleansing properties which rid the body of toxins and other waste products that cause kidney problems and inflamed bladders. Physicians also use Corn Silk as diuretic.

Western medicine may prescribe dialysis treatments, and kidney transplants in case of kidney failure. However, Ayurveda medicine offers an alternative treatment which may be used in combination with Western medicine. For your treatment plan or changes you might make on it, always consult with your nephrologist or kidney specialist.
