Depression Treatments

Depression is a mental disorder that affects a person’s moods. It affects millions of people around the world. People with depression may feel sad, angry, irritable, tired, confused, guilty, hopeless or worthless. When a person is diagnosed with depression, it’s bad news for himself and his family. It’s painful for the person and can also be difficult for the person’s family. Depression if left untreated could get worse. It will affect a person’s ability to function in daily life and work. Worst still, depression even may lead a person to suicide.

A serious disease depression may be, it is treatable. Proper treatment can help people with depression get back to normal daily activities.

Main treatments for depression are antidepressants and psychotherapy. Antidepressants are medicines that help to relieve depression so that a person suffering from depression can function more normally. There are mainly four types of antidepressants:

1. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) – Celexa (citalopram), Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate), Luvox (fluvoxamine), Paxil (paroxetine), Prozac (fluoxetine), Zoloft (sertraline). These antidepressants help the brain absorb the chemical serotonin.
2. Tricyclics antidepressants (TCAs) – Adapin (doxepin), Anafranil,(clomipramine), Elavil (amitriptyline), Endep (amitriptyline), Ludiomil (maprotiline), Norpramin (desipramine), Pamelor (nortryptyline), Pertofrane (desipramine), Sinequan (doxepin), Surmontil (trimipramine), Tofranil (imipramine), Vivactil (protriptyline)
3. Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) – Nardil (phenelzine), Parnate (tranylcypromine)
4. Serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) – venlafaxine (tradenames Effexor XR®, Efexor®), nefazodone (tradename Serzone®), milnacipran (tradename Dalcipran®/ Portugal; Ixel®/ France), desipramine (tradenames Norpramine®, Pertofraneis®), duloxetine (tradename Cymbalta®)

In the market, there are also antidepressants that don’t fall in the above categories available such as buproprion (Wellbutrin), nefazodone (Serzone), trazodone (Desyrel), venlafaxine (Effexor), and mirtazapine (Remeron).

Certain antidepressants cause side effects. In most cases, side effect disappears once a person’s body has adjusted to the medicines. Sometimes people on antidepressants may feel worse before feeling better. It takes time for depression medication to work correctly.

Besides taking medications, psychotherapy or talk therapy can be also of help to depressed individuals. It includes short-term therapy sessions, usually from ten to twenty weeks. Positive results for the depression patients will generally be showing up after one or more sessions of psychotherapy. This type of depression treatment actually helps the individuals by slowly making them open up about their feelings, the root of their problems, most important of all, the root of their depression. Healthy verbal exchanges between the cognitive behavior therapist and the depression patient is great depression treatment that’ll positively affect the depression patients by helping them discuss and talk about whatever they’ve been keeping inside.

Even though either medication or psychotherapy works independently all by itself, many experts feel combination of both medication and psychotherapy can work more effectively to help depressed individuals overcome depression and become mentally healthy.

Use Black Tea to Get Rid of Spots and Acne

Spots, pimples, acne, breakouts, bumpy – uneven skin… it’s a nightmare for anyone of any age.

I used to suffer dreadfully with it, nothing worked for me… apart from a small number of products (face washes, scrubs etc) – but only temporarily.

A reason that they don’t work and why I no longer used them is because they drastically alter the PH levels on your skin, stripping away essential oils.

This leaves your skin sore and brittle; causing easy damage to it.

After using them, your skin is left without its natural oils and PH balance, and so your skin tries to compensate by excreting more oils.. in an attempt to re-balance them.

This means a higher level of oil/grease on your face, clogging up your pores and causing dirt to get trapped in them. This turns into sebum (the white substance which appears in spots) and contains bacteria which can spread – causing more spots to form.

You’re skin needs something which isn’t going to strip away any layers of skin or cause a sharp alteration of your natural oil level or PH balance.

This is where black tea comes in.

Natural compounds found in black tea are excellent for your skin, soothing but strict.

The caffeine content in the tea is high, meaning its a great source for you to use – especially on your eyes.

The skin around your eye area is thin, and I mean paper thin. This means it is easy for stuff to get absorbed into the skin and deeper down – which can be both bad and good!

The bad is that any dirt or grease will likely get trapped quite easily here and cause spots to form. Not only that, but stress, lack of sleep, diet, skin care: these can all cause those dark circles under your eyes (usually called ‘black bags’).

The good is that the caffeine in tea can help promote and enforce higher levels of blood flow, meaning more blood to return to the eye and will flush out the darkness.

Tea is a natural astringent, meaning it will dry up and tighten skin. This is really important when dealing with spots, acne, pimples etc…

This is because, drying out the spot will effectively get rid of it and tightening the skin will cause the pores to close and prevent any dirt or grease getting into them, which gets trapped and causes more spots.

The other compounds in the black tea act as a soother, reducing and removing the blotchy/red patches which can appear on your skin; sometimes these are bumps on the skin which aren’t quite spots but aren’t flat.

Black tea is a great way to treat your spots because it works quickly and used as part of a daily skin care routine will leave you with cleaner, healthier and brighter looking skin.

How to apply black tea to spots

You’ll need:

  • A tea bag
  • A cup
  • Hot water
  • Cold water
  1. Find a cup, fill with warm water (A mix of 2 parts hot water and 1 part cold water works best).
  2. Dip the tea bag into the water, leaving it to saturate the water for a few minutes.
  3. When the water is a dark brown, take the tea bag out and a dab it onto the spots or acne area.
  4. Repeat this for a few minutes; the tea will dry quite quickly and so you can use a lot of the water.
  5. Leave overnight, don’t wash off straight away!
  6. In the morning you can now use a plain face wash to remove any tea residue which might be left.
  7. You’ll notice your skin feels firmer, softer, your spots will reduce and any red marks will fade.

You can use the tea bag (or two) on your eyes after apply to the spots. You can do this by place them on your eyes and leave for a good 15 to 30 minutes.

Do this nightly and you’ll see a big difference! The darkness will fade underneath your eyes.

Fear Of Spiders and Arachnophobia … An Introduction

Hollywood made a pretty horrid movie about it – “Arachnophobia”, but for some the film was excruciating – if they even went to watch it. The cast certainly was awesome: John Goodman (“Roseanne”), Kathy Kinney (“The Drew Carey Show”), and Jeff Daniels (“Dumb and Dumber”).

But it doesn’t take a film to frighten people who suffer from arachnophobia. Spiders can be anywhere and everywhere. That fact alone strikes terror into the hearts of those who hold this phobia in their minds.

I have never really had a problem with spiders. When I see them, I find the closest boot and send them on to spider heaven. I don’t want them crawling all over me, but if I see one, I don’t get scared. Now show me a snake and it’s a different story. So I understand!

God did not make spiders cute and cuddly. He did not make them fun or even interesting – well, to most people. After all, they just kind of crawl around and lurk in dark spaces sometimes spinning a web for you to get all over your face if you walk through it. Around Halloween, this can be super – handmade decorations! But at other times, it’s just a nuisance.

Then you have to think about those spiders that are poisonous.  Media outlets have made all of us increasingly aware of the dangers of brown recluse spiders and the physical damage they can wreak on a persons body.  Then you have to consider the deadly Tarantulas, and other poisonous spiders that can be lurking just underneath your dwelling. Ooh!

Psoriasis Diet: What to Eat to Calm Your Symptoms

First of all, there are no big research studies out there that show a specific diet that controls or cures psoriasis. This doesn’t mean that one doesn’t exist for you, but for the bulk of those with psoriasis, different diets will work for each one and no specific diet works for everyone. Doctors generally then recommend that psoriasis sufferers eat a balanced diet, low in sweets and low in fats. It should contain a lot of vegetables and fruits and should be accompanied by a regular exercise routine.

Even so, there are specific personal experiences with diet and psoriasis that you shouldn’t ignore. If you notice that tomatoes make your psoriasis worse, then avoid tomatoes. If it’s sweets that make your psoriasis worse, avoid them. When you have psoriasis, you should pay attention to your diet and what things make the psoriasis worse (or better, for that matter) and should adjust your diet accordingly.

There are a lot of diets out there for psoriasis sufferers and many books written on the topic. They often blame junk food, coffee, tomatoes, wheat products and eggs, for example. They have a lot of theories about things that work for a psoriasis diet, such as omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, found in cold water ocean-going fish like tuna and salmon, herbal teas and certain fruit juices. It’s not surprising that many of these books do not agree on what’s good and what’s bad for psoriasis because many are based on personal experience, which can be different from your personal experience regarding diet and psoriasis.

Still, if you find a reasonable psoriasis diet, it is worth trying one to see if it makes your psoriasis better. There may be things in the diet that soothe the irritation of the skin and, as long as the diet isn’t harmful to you, it shouldn’t be a bad thing to try. If it doesn’t work, try another diet to see what you think about it. Diets that eliminate alcohol are especially good to try as alcohol is a known trigger to worsening psoriasis. At the same time, be wary of any supplements that are made for psoriasis, with the possible exception of zinc and selenium, minerals that have some effectiveness against psoriasis.

One thing that might work is to try a reasonable psoriasis diet and then cheat on the diet so that you can see if the psoriasis flares. If it does, the diet is probably doing something for you and you should continue on the diet. Try eliminating suspicious foods and add them back, seeing what your psoriasis does after you start the food back again.

One aspect of the diet you may wish to consider trying is to get rid of wheat, barley and rye products that contain gluten. People with psoriasis can have anti-gliadin antibodies found in gluten and the antibodies make the psoriasis worse if you take in gluten-containing products. Keep such products out of your diet, including bread, pasta and other foods with gluten, and see what happens to your psoriasis. You can also ask your doctor to test you for anti-gliadin antibodies and then you’ll know what things to avoid in your diet.

While there’s no perfect dietary modification for psoriasis, pay attention to what you’re eating and see which things don’t do well with your psoriasis. You can create a psoriasis diet all your own.

Allergic Reactions to Wool Carpets and Rugs?

The natural performance of a wool fiber and it’s durable qualities have protected man for over 25,000 years. Wool is actually a hypoallergenic fiber. Those who say they are allergic are most often referring to the prickle and tickle effect of an old wool sweater. Sitting or laying on wool carpets and rugs rarely, if ever, can cause the same effect. No one has ever been treated or diagnosed for anaflactic shock when coming into contact with wool.

Allergies are widespread in the developed world and that problem is increasing for two main reasons:

  • A great number of synthetic substances and petroleum based products are being used in the home.
  • The improved diagnosis of allergic conditions are now available to those suffering from allergies.
  • There is no reason why asthmatic or allergy sensitive people should not enjoy the comfort and good looks of carpets and/or rugs. Wool is non-allergenic and does not promote the growth of dust mites or bacteria. Wool carpet fibers are too long and too coarse to be inhaled and therefore do not affect asthma sufferers. In fact hard surface floors allow airborne particles to be disturbed and whirl into the air causing more irritation for hay fever and asthma sufferers.

Recent data from Swedens Central Statistics Bureau, Army, and Flooring Association shows that over the past 20 years while the installation of carpet went down with the increase of hard surface installations, the number of allergic people increased dramatically over the same period.

Wool fibers actually purify indoor air by absorbing air pollutants and gases. Wool fibers absorb common contaminants in indoor air like formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide, while not releasing VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds). This is one of the reasons why the LEEDS (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) environmental program accepted wool carpets as the only soft surface floor covering in the initial testing of accepted floor covering products. The approved products are rubber, bamboo, linoleum, cork, and, of course, wool. All of these products are also rapidly renewable, biodegradable, and carbon neutral.

Not only does wool keep the air free of many harmful pollutants, it will not release them, even when heated. It has been estimated that wool carpets can continually purify indoor air for up to 30 years. What a natural and beautiful way to help the earth and improve the comfort in your own home.

If you hear someone say “I’m allergic to wool”, just keep in mind that another man made myth is now explained and hopefully put to rest.

Lactoferrin: A Natural Remedy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the most common gastrointestinal disorder in the United States, affecting 1 out of 5 people. Even with millions of people seeking help for this, the causes are still not well understood. Many seek natural remedies when traditional methods do not bring the relief they need. Researchers believe a combination of physical and mental health problems can lead to the bowels becoming damaged, or sensitive to certain stressors. This can lead to a problem with the information pathway between the brain and the gut, resulting in altered intestinal function.

Symptoms can be a result of an infection or irritation in the stomach and intestines from bacteria or other harmful organisms. One study showed that people who had a bout of gastroenteritis were ten times more likely to develop irritable bowel syndrome. Another condition, called small intestine bacterial overgrowth, is quite common in people with IBS. An overgrowth or change in the type of bacteria in the small intestine causes irritation and symptoms of diarrhea, excess gas, weight loss, and nutritional deficiencies. Some gastrointestinal symptoms can be due to overgrowth of yeast (candida). Intestinal candidiasis can cause symptoms of bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, and cramping, along with fatigue.

IBS can be embarrassing to downright devastating to those who suffer from it. Those who deal with this condition on a daily basis seek relief from whatever source they can find. Traditional medications consist of anti-spasmodics to calm the painful cramps, antidepressants to help with the mental anxiety, and antibiotics to get the bacteria under control. However, all of these come with a large list of side effects or warnings.

There are many natural remedies to help control symptoms. One supplement that has shown some positive results is lactoferrin. It is an immune boosting, bacteria killing protective protein found in all body fluids. It is found in colostrum, and gives a newborn immunity protection from the mother. Almost 70% of our immune function is located in your gut. If your intestines are inflamed or damaged then your immune system won’t be able to perform as well as it should.

    Lactoferrin helps the symptoms by:

    1. Binding to free iron floating around. This is important because most bacteria and candida need iron to grow. Free iron interferes with our immune cell function, so this effectively starves the harmful organisms while keeping our immune systems strong.

    2. Entering the bacteria or candida and damaging their cell membrane. This will either kill them directly, or it interfere with their energy and weaken them.

    3. Preventing candida from sticking to the lining of the digestive tract and removing it once it is attached.

    4. Inhibiting the action of cytokines in the gastrointestinal tract. Cytokines are proteins found in the body that cause inflammation.

    5. Nourishing the digestive tract with prebiotic properties, which also help with GI health. Prebiotics nourish the friendly bacteria that live in your digestive tract. A balance of good to harmful bacteria is needed to prevent gastrointestinal symptoms

Lactoferrin has been shown to be a natural remedy for IBS. It protects the lining of your gastrointestinal tract, support your immune system, and aid in destroying organisms that can cause symptoms. It has been labeled by the FDA as GRAS (generally recognized as safe) for the entire population, even those who are allergic to milk and dairy

    Midlife Crisis Stages

In his book Men in Midlife Crisis, Jim Conway applies Elizabeth Kubler-Ross’s stages of Grief with adjustments to Midlife Crisis (MLC).

      Stages of Grief: Kubler-Ross

    1. Denial
    2. Anger
    3. Bargaining
    4. Depression
    5. Acceptance
      Stages of MLC: Conway

    1. Denial
    2. Anger
    3. Replay
    4. Depression
    5. Withdrawal
    6. Acceptance

According to Conway, Midlife Crisis ranges on average from 2-7 years. The crisis often begins slowly, beneath detection from outside sources. Anger follows in the failure of Denial. This then leads to the Avoidance that is Replay, ensuring the transition becomes a crisis. Denial attempts to maintain; midlife avoidance pursues lost youth via regression, falsely creating greater distance to death.

The application of stages is useful, but also has the negative effect of false security in the idea that they create a predictable Map. Each person’s journey will have similarities as well as great variation. The early stages are most similar, with greater divergence deeper in the Midlife Tunnel. Archetypal themes are the predominate forces driving the crisis in the beginning; but as each person progresses, his personal lost fragments surface, yielding divergent pathways.

There is also a danger in viewing the stages as ordered steps in the process. Literal terms for the stages, such as those used by Conway, can be confusing when describing emotions and conditions which are not isolated to the stages they reference. Midlife Crisis is about Denial and Depression; both of these permeate all stages. Overt and Covert Depression are an overarching theme of the journey. Neither of these is isolated to certain stages. The same is true of Anger, which is often an outward expression of Depression.

Replay is Conway’s only metaphorical term, so named because at this point, the Midlifer seeks to return to his lost youth, reliving such experiences “One More Time.” This Fantasy phase invades all areas of life. For some it is re-experiencing previously fulfilled dreams to prove youthful vigor and capabilities, for those whose dreams were unfulfilled, the youthful regression may be even more severe. It is a different type of Denial-rather an Escape in which there is an admission of Midlife and aging, yielding an attempt to flee the inevitable through youthful regression. Many Midlifers in Conway’s Replay stage spew venomous anger and hatred at their spouses. This anger differs from Conway’s label of Anger which refers to general Anger with God and Life; the Victim’s Why Me? cry at the unfairness of life.

In his book In Midlife A Jungian Perspective, Murray Stein identifies three stages of a Midlife Transition.

    1. Separation
    2. Liminality
    3. Reintegration

Since a Midlife Crisis is a Midlife Transition of catastrophic levels, the transition stages must be a part of the Crisis stages. I will use the stages outlined below. These are not a Map, but rather a loose structure for the process of growth. The phases cycle and recycle throughout the Midlife Journey. For this reason the main phases may be viewed as a loose order, but the subphases are synergistic characteristics rather than ordered steps.

      Pre-Midlife: Accommodation

    1. Separation
    1. Rejection & Refusal
    2. Resentment
    3. Replay (Covert Depression)
  • Liminality or Liminal/Overt Depression
  • Rebirth
  • Reintegration
  • Separation may begin with Rejection & Refusal, but these do not end to allow for Resentment which in turn does not end to allow for Replay. Replay is the result of the integration of Rejection & Refusal and Resentment. Replay is Covert Depression-a denial of depression-which leads to anger as rage or stoicism with outbursts of rage. It is a snowball effect, with each characteristic adding to the others to create Separation. I call the Depression stage both Liminality and Liminal Depression because it makes it something less dangerous or frightening-rather than something wrong as is commonly considered; instead it is a time for self contemplation where a person retreats inward.

A midlife transition is the bridge between Accommodation, the life before midlife, and Individuation, the life path following midlife. It is Liminal; the MLC phase of Liminality is a midlife transition. Separation is a mini phase of preparation for Liminality and its MLC characteristics may not be present; Rebirth and Reintegration are mini phases of preparation for reentrance into the world and Individuation. In MLC denial of the transition leads to a prolonged Separation phase which may be longer than Liminality. Growth and development-progress-is a function of Liminality.

Role Play – The Two Words That Strike Fear Into People’s Hearts

The two words all participants fear… Have you ever heard a trainer say the dreaded phrase, ” In a moment, we’re going to do a role play… “?

For many people, those are the last words they hear, because they go into a form of shock and lose the power to communicate. Role plays can be an excellent way to practice skills or to rehearse ways of dealing with specific situations or people. However, the term “role play” strikes fear into people’s hearts. They need to be handled carefully.

Here are some suggestions for making role plays less traumatic for all involved.

Tip 1. Try to avoid using the expression “role play” at all, use the term “skills practice” or something similar. That’s what it is, after all.

Tip 2. Try to avoid having people play roles if you can, i.e. pretend to be someone else. It’s more effective if people can just be themselves practicing a skill. Of course, this means that you need other people who will role play. These could be trainers or professional role players, (i.e. actors). I work with a lot of actors who do this and they are excellent, but of course they tend to ask for payment (the idea that actors just do it for the applause is apparently incorrect). The problem with the trainers doing the role play is that participants sometimes don’t take it as seriously as they do with outsiders. If you can’t get actors, can you ask other people in your organization to come along and take part?

Tip 3. Try to reduce the stress on people, which often comes from feeling exposed in front of a group. Let people role play (sorry, practice their skills) in pairs or groups of three with one being an observer rather than in front of everyone. Alternatively, try a group activity where everyone can chip in. For example, let’s say it’s a customer service course. The trainer could play the customer and have the whole group represent one person. Someone could start off by speaking to the “customer” then someone else take over until everyone had a turn.

Tip 4. Make the exercise as realistic as possible. One objection to these activities is that they aren’t real so people don’t take them seriously. Make sure the activity is based on real situations people will face. Using external people also helps, as I’ve mentioned.

Tip 5. Give very clear instructions and also give written briefs for the exercise. Make sure that any visiting role players are clear about the purpose of the exercise and what is expected of them. In particular, make sure you stress the benefits of the exercise to everyone involved so they can see exactly why you’re putting them through it.

Tip 6. If some people are really hostile to the idea of a role play or extremely anxious (and some people genuinely are) then don’t force them to do it. The exercise will not be successful and any possible benefits will be outweighed by the impact on your relationship with the person involved.

Role plays can be invaluable. They can also be a dreadful torment and waste of time. How you set them up and handle them can often make the difference.

How to Keep Your Nails Off the Fungus?

Most people know that the nail refers to the hard plate that covers the tip of our finger or toe. However, anatomically speaking, the nail is made up of several components. The hard part that we refer to is actually the nail plate, which is essentially made up of keratin. Everything else around it including the cuticle, the surrounding folds of skin and the underlying connecting tissue or the nail bed are parts of the nail. Any nail problem can be a nuisance such as chipping, hangnail, loose nail, or ingrown nail. But one of the more serious problems is nail fungus. It is characterized by discolored, soft, often crumbly nails that may eventually thicken or develop ridges. In some cases, the infected nail emits a foul odor due to debris that collect under the nails. It is serious because it can even spread to other parts of the body and it is potentially catastrophic for people with weak immune system such as those suffering from diabetes. The most common cause of nail fungus is type called dermatophytes which more commonly infects toenails. Another type is yeast, particularly Candida, which more often infect fingernails. The fungus invades the nails by entering into any tiny cuts in the surrounding skin or in a break in between the nail plate and the underlying nail bed. Not everyone is at risk of infection. About 12% of Americans are found to be infected with the disease. Adults above 60 are more prone to infection. This may be because they have poor blood circulation compared to the rest of the population and they may have been more exposed to fungus over the years. In addition, their nails grow thicker and more slowly, thus adding to the risk. There are many common antifungal ointments and creams that are available over-the-counter but do not effectively treat advanced cases of fungal infection. Medical practitioners may prescribe an inside-and-out approach to treatment using oral medication and topical solution. Some oral antifungal medications available on prescription are Itraconazole (Sporanox), Fluconazole (Diflucan), and Terbinafine (Lamisil). There is also a specialized lacquer for mild to moderate fungal infections. In all cases, treatment can be long drawn and oral treatment can even pose a serious threat to health. Thus, many people opt to treat the malady using homemade cures. Common alternatives include tea tree oil, vinegar, oregano oil, vapor rub, and antiseptic mouthwash. In either case, it is best to consult a doctor to determine the course of action given each person’s medical history and personal preferences. Hygiene also plays utmost importance to effective prevention and treatment. * Always keep the feet clean, dry and well-ventilated. Always wear a fresh pair of socks. Air out the feet every once in a while to keep dry. Wear shoes do not cramp the toes. Use antifungal powder for protection. * Wet public places are breeding grounds of fungus. Always remember to wash the feet thoroughly after using public showers, pools and locker rooms. * Avoid sharing personal items with anyone who has been infected with the disease. * Take extra care not to prick the skin surrounding the nails which may become potential access points of fungus. * Use gloves to keep your hands from getting too soaked in water. Dry the insides of your gloves after use.

3 Must Have Essential Oils to Calm Your Pet

The reason I love animals so much is that they give off an attitude of happiness, innocence and unconditional love to their people.  Our pets are just as happy being a part of our household as we are of having them with us.

But sometimes an animal comes into our life that is a bit “out there!”

For instance, the dog that has an irrational fear of rain and won’t for the life of him go outside to potty during a rain shower.  Or the cat who hides for hours when a friend comes over.  Or, how about the dog with attachment issues that destroys the house while you’re at work?  Any of these sound familiar?

My cat’s, Sammie and Max, love to hang out on our screened-in patio.  But whenever the garbage truck comes rolling in, they flee for their lives!

It might sound crazy to us, but whatever your animal’s fears or wacky behaviors may be, they are completely legitimate in their minds.

Using essential oils on your animals can really take the edge off of their anxiety, big time!

Because of an animal’s heightened senses, they respond very well to essential oils.  In the wild, animals eat specific plants to heal themselves.  In captivity (our homes), the plant kingdom is not readily available.  Using essential oils on your pet gives them access to the vast healing properties of nature.

The three best essential oils to calm your pets are:

    Roman Chamomile

Peace & Calming® (a blend from Young Living)

These essential oils can be used to support your animal with; fear of rain and thunderstorms, separation anxiety, hyperactivity, trauma/abuse, depression, Illness, trips to the vet’s office, grief/loss of another family pet and any other situation that causes great stress for your animal, such as garbage trucks!

When you apply essential oils to animals, always remember less is more as animals are very sensitive to essential oils.

Also, with animals, it’s best to dilute essential oils with a carrier oil such as organic olive oil.  I recommend one part essential oil to 1 part carrier oil for all animals EXCEPT cats. The dilution ratio for cats is 1 part essential oil to 10 parts carrier oil.

    Use caution with cats!

Any of the essential oils listed in this article are safe for dogs and horses, however; cats are a different story! Cats are extremely sensitive to essential oils containing phenols, such as oregano and thyme. Cats can not effectively metabolize phenols because they lack an enzyme in their liver to digest the phenols. Avoid Peace & Calming® essential oil blend on your cat, as it does contain phenols. Lavender and Roman Chamomile essential oils ARE safe for cats.

How to apply essential oils on dogs, horses and cats:

    For calming dogs:

Mix 1 drop Lavender, Roman Chamomile or Peace & Calming® essential oil with 1 drop carrier oil.  Rub this mixture on your dogs pads, ears or comb through their fur.  Apply any time you sense your dog is stressed.

    For calming horses:

Mix 1 drop Lavender, Roman Chamomile or Peace & Calming® essential oil with 1 drop carrier oil. Rub this mixture on your horse’s muzzle, ears or cornet bands. Apply any time your horse is stressed.

    For calming cats:

Mix 1 drop Lavender or Roman Chamomile essential oil with 10 drops carrier oil. Rub this mixture on your cat’s pads, ears or comb through their fur. Apply any time your cat is stressed.

By the way, the essential oils in this article are also good for easing your anxieties, too!  Dilution is not required on humans.  Just apply a drop or two on your wrists, shoulders or behind your ears.

And the next time you’re opening up a bottle of lavender essential oil, share some with your animal friends!  They’ll thank you!

Nail Fungus – the Causes, Prevention and Useful Facts

Our respective surroundings may be good to live in but the body is never safe from various diseases living round us. There are many different kinds of bacteria, good and bad that make use of our body as good host for breeding. Take tinea unguium for example, the name itself already sounds dreadful, right? Let us find out more about them.

    Nail Fungus: An Overview

Nail fungus is an infection in the nails. When the bacteria called dermatophyte or tinea unguium penetrates the nails, then contamination occurs. These bacteria spawn from yeasts and molds that thrive in damp environments. They grow in places where there is very low supply of oxygen, or anaerobic in nature.

Also called onychomycosis, dermatophyte is also the cause of other common skin disorders such as ringworm, jock itch, psoriasis, and athlete’s foot. When one is infected with onychomycosis on either finger or toenails, he experiences reddening and swelling, irritation and itching, and unpleasant odor around the infected area. The nails thicken and become frail until it totally detaches from the nail bed when the infection reaches the highest degree. There are various classifications that characterize onychomycosis:

    – Distal Subungual Onychomycosis (infection of the nailbed);
    – White Superficial Onychomycosis (formation of “white islands” on the outer layers of the nail bed);
    – Proximal Subungual Onychomycosis (infection of the proximal nail fold);
    – Candidal Onychomycosis (invasion of bacterium candida);
    – Total Dystrophic Onychomycosis (destruction of nail plate).

    Nail Fungus Causes & Prevention

The key factor that encourages nail fungal infection is improper hygiene. You can avoid acquiring the disease by keeping a clean body and surrounding. Let us look into a detailed list of causes and measures to evade onychomycosis.

    – Careless use of public properties or walking around barefoot in open pools, communal washrooms, and gyms give the fungus easy access to your nails. Be reminded that dermatophytes are anaerobic.

    – Lack of hygiene. The instruments you use on your nails aren’t 100 per cent safe unless they are sanitized. Check with your professional manicurist or pedicurist if they are sterilized.

    – Heavy perspiration. You feet has greater share of risk of acquiring nail fungal infection as they are frequently confined inside your shoes and tight socks. To keep them fungi-free, always give your feet enough rest before washing them, dry them well, and apply foot powder. Choose the right socks to wear, avoid pure cotton but go for those with spandex.

    – If your hands are already infected, seek advice from a specialist. Otherwise, apply topical treatments available over the counter. Some of the most prescribed brands are Lamisil, Tinactin, Penlac, Dermisil, lacquer, or simply put Vicks VapoRub on the infected part.

Generally, it takes three or more months of therapy before the bacteria disappear and a new nail to grow. This, however, does not make you safer as the infection may recur if not taken care of.

    Some Useful Facts

Nail fungal infection can hit anyone but among the most susceptible victims are adults ages 60 and above or persons with diabetes or leukemia because of having weak immune system and problems over blood circulation. The males have larger percentage of infection than females and children are the less likely prey. These tiny microorganisms depend on warm and damp environment, which make your toe nails an appropriate breeding ground.

Ringworm – A Real Health Threat

Ringworms infections are identified by the reddish ring on the infected area of the skin. Though it is a common notion that they are caused by worms or even insects, this is untrue. They are fungal infections that can afflict humans and animals alike.

Ringworm cause surfaces of the skin to have red rings. Initially it may look like a pimple but it will eventually grow bigger. The center may look healthy while the ring itself can be embossed and may feel a little crusty. Furthermore, ringworm cause patches of hairless areas on the skin. Any part of the human body can suffer from this infection including the scalp.

One familiar type of ringworm is the athlete’s foot. As the name suggests, it’s located in the person’s foot. However, they are not circular in shape like the ones found in other parts of the body. This fairly common type can be remedied with over the counter ringworm treatment.

Once identified, ringworm remedies must be quickly administered. When left untreated, it can infect other parts of the body and topical creams and remedies may not be adequate to cure the severe infection.

Being very contagious, the spread of infection from person to person is fast. The primary way it is spread is through direct contact. Moreover, infected animals can also spread the same to humans. It is therefore imperative to minimize contact with infected animals and persons.

By thoroughly cleaning clothes and other belongings of infected animals or people can reduce the spread of the infection. Basically, keeping yourself, items around you and surroundings clean can make a big difference. Coupled with proper ringworm remedies, the spread of infection can be controlled.

The fungal infection has a 10-day incubation period. This simply means that from the time of exposure, the person will be asymptomatic – no symptoms or sign of the infection can be noticed. After this latency period, rashes will occur and the familiar ring will be visible. It is important for medical professionals to properly diagnose the problem. Furthermore, the right prescription must be given to cure the infection. Though there are a variety of remedies out in the market, the most popular and most effective over the counter ringworm treatment is the anti-fungal creams. They are usually used twice a day, but it is best to check with your doctor. It is also important to cover the infected area with a gauze pad or just a band aid. Most importantly, continue to apply the cream even if the rash disappears. Lastly, avoid scratching to prevent its spread.
