Several STIs can be (but by no means always are) associated with the presence of dry. These include:

– Gonorrhea. Dry is one of the less common symptoms of gonorrhea, but may appear, especially near the tip of the penis, which may also become swollen.

– Syphilis. Men with syphilis often do develop dry, especially during the secondary stage. It may present itself as dry patches, sometimes scaly. Because symptoms of syphilis are often similar to symptoms of other issues, it’s important to be tested for the condition if a man thinks he may possibly have it.

– Herpes. When the herpes virus is at its peak, it may cause some dryness to occur on or around the penis.

Radioactive iodine (I-131), which destroys part or all of the thyroid gland and renders it incapable of overproducing thyroid hormone; or
Subtotal thyroidectomy, in which a surgeon removes most of the thyroid gland and renders it incapable of overproducing thyroid hormone.

Beta blockers. These medications, which include propranolol (Inderal), atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor) and nadolol (Corgard), often relieve hyperthyroid signs and symptoms, such as a rapid heart rate, nervousness and tremors. These medications aren’t a cure for Graves’ because your body will still produce too much thyroxine, but beta blockers block some of the action of the thyroid hormone. Beta blockers are often used in conjunction with other forms of treatment.Anithyroid Drugs (ATD’s) This is the route that I chose. The drugs inclue Methimazole, and PTU. I chose PTU. These medications stop the thyroid from overproducing hormones, it’s the excess of hormone that’s causing the thyrotoxicosis.

INTRODUCTION

Death anxiety became a topic of psychological interest in the late 1950’s. From its inception “thanatology” has been a multidisciplinary field including contributions from all disciplines. The definition of death anxiety has been the most perplexing task for a researcher till today. In the opinion of earlier reviewers, such as Kastenbaum & Costa (1977) much confusion in the literature on death attitudes can be traced to the “careless interchange of ‘fear’ and ‘anxiety,’ each of which implies different approaches”, for e.g., if fear represents a more realistic reaction to a specific danger, anxiety refers to a more neurotic response that is out of proportion to any actual external hazard (Choron, 1974). Peterson (1980) concluded that the study of death and dying “is severely limited in terms of both methodology and on theory.

Death is reality in the lives of adults; in adolescence, it may still be regarded as a stranger, but by old age it has come to be viewed as frequent, unwelcome companion of life’s journey (Stillion, 1995). Lieberman and Tobin (1980) maintain that older people do not generally have the same reluctance to discuss death and may, openly resolve fears on mortality as they review their lives. They suggested that elderly may have simply accumulated enough unpleasant life events over the years to make dying seem less traumatic. Sinha (1971) indicates that “fear of death in the elderly is a result of psychological deterioration.”

Kogan & Wallach (1961) found that adults of all ages ranked death as the most aversive of a wide range of concepts, even though every one evaluated death negatively, the elderly persons rated it more positive than else. Mullins & Lopez (1982) show evidences that old (75+) may become more death anxious than young old (60-75). There is not yet enough evidence to provide a secure interpretation of older respondents’ lower death concern.

Elderly with sound emotional health, married and with more number of children received lower death anxiety scores (Baum & Boxley, 1984). Elders who perceived time as slow and those who lived in institutions tends to feel more anxious about death (Baum, 1983). Elderly with satisfactory family-ties and more life satisfaction received less death anxiety scores (Tate, 1982).

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

Review of literature on death anxiety leads to the conclusion that not much research has been done both in abroad and in India to study the role of children in the experience of death anxiety. Hence this study has been attempted to find out the influence of children in the experience of death anxiety among the elderly. It has already been proved that presence of more children results in lower death anxiety among the elderly (Baum & Boxley, 1984).

METHOD

Sample

Sample comprised of 30 men and 30 women elderly ranging in age from 50 to 82 years (mean age= 63.1 years) forming a sample size of 60. The samples were selected from Coimbatore District (Manchester of South India) in Tamil Nadu. The participants were contacted individually by the researcher and data was collected by face-to-face interview.

Tools

The tools used in this study for data collection by the researcher were:

1. Personal Information Schedule: An “Information Schedule” was designed by the investigator to procure demographic and biographic information from the samples required for the study.

2. Leming’s fear of death scale (1979-80): This scale comprised of 26 statements with 6 possible response outcomes i.e., 1 as ‘Strongly Agree,” “Agree,” “tend to agree,” “tend to disagree,” and “Strongly disagree.” Each statement carries scores from 1 to 6 and the respondent is to circle the category which he/she feels suitable. All such scores are added to give the total score. The maximum score is 156 and minimum is 26.

STATISTICAL ANALAYSIS

Mean, standard deviation and “t” test were the statistics calculated.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Since no significant gender differences were found in the experience of death anxiety, the results are presented with data combined. The results summarized in Table I shows that the‘t’ value for 58 df is significant below .05 level of confidence which indicate that elderly with more children experience less death anxiety than elderly with less and no children, this is in accordance with prior findings (eg., Reinhardt and Fisher, 1988; Baum & Boxley, 1984; etc) which described the relationship with children as providing more stimulation, ego-support and utility in latter life.

There are a few things people take on a regular basis that can absolutely destroy their sleep cycles without them knowing it. And some of those substances might come as surprise to you because you may think they usually help you relax and fall asleep. But the opposite is true. Not only are those substances bad for your health in general, but they also are bad for your sleep.

Listen, if you want to improve your sleep dramatically and you are currently doing one or more of the things listed below, I urge you to stop doing them. And if you can’t stop, find some help. But it is absolutely critical that you get rid of those bad habits. So here is a list of what not to do, and why you shouldn’t do it.

1. Alcohol: Yes I know exactly what you are thinking and I can already here you. “But I have a glass of wine or two at night and it actually helps me sleep”. False, false and more false. Alcohol, after stimulating you, will make you sleepy, drowsy and might help you pass out faster, but you will remain in the first phases of sleep (light sleep), and never enter deep restorative sleep. Because of its sedating effect, people with sleep problems tend to drink at night. But even though you may think the results are positive because you were able to fall asleep faster, they are in fact rather negative, because alcohol will actually disturb your sleep cycles and phases. Plus alcohol should not be something you rely upon to fall asleep.

Here is another interesting fact: if you thought drinking earlier in the day would not affect your sleep well think again. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (http://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/aa41.htm) “Alcoholic beverages are often consumed in the late afternoon (e.g., at “happy hour” or with dinner) without further consumption before bedtime. Studies Roehrs, T., and Roth, T. Alcohol-induced sleepiness and memory function. Alcohol Health Res World 19(2):130-135, 1995) show that a moderate dose of alcohol consumed as much as 6 hours before bedtime can increase wakefulness during the second half of sleep. By the time this effect occurs, the dose of alcohol consumed earlier has already been eliminated from the body, suggesting a relatively long-lasting change in the body’s mechanisms of sleep regulation” Landolt, H.-P., et al. Late-afternoon ethanol intake affects nocturnal sleep and the sleep EEG in middle-aged men. J Clin Psychopharmacol 16(6):428-436, 1996; Vitiello, M.V. Sleep, alcohol and alcohol abuse. Another interesting fact about alcohol, is that it actually inhibits the secretion of a hormone called ADH (Anti Diuretic Hormone), which when in normal levels makes you retain the appropriate amount of water. But when you drink alcohol, this hormone stops being produced, and therefore your body looses more water than it should. This is called dehydration. So what does it mean for you? Well the more alcohol you drink, the more your body will dehydrate and this has 2 consequences:

1. When you are dehydrated, you can’t sleep well and wake up thirsty in the middle of the night.

2. You wake up in the middle of the night with the urge to urinate.

So here are 2 more ways alcohol disrupts your sleep. Knowing all this, we can come to the conclusion you will be better off without drinking alcohol at all. Does that sound too hard for you? Well you make the choice: the pleasure of booze or restful healthy deep restorative sleep.

2. Nicotine: Do you smoke? Do you find you need that last cigarette at night otherwise you just can’t relax from the busy day you had and won’t be able to fall asleep. Maybe as you are reading these words it’s late, you can’t sleep and you have a cigarette between your fingers. Well let me tell you something interesting: just as I said it with alcohol, you’d be better off without it. So put it out right now! Yes you heard me; that last cigarette of the day that is supposed to relax you, will in fact have just the opposite effect.

If you are under the impression the cigarettes you smoke actually help you relax, you have been fooled. Nicotine is a stimulant!

Nicotine stimulates your nervous system, and instead of helping you sleep, it is going to keep you awake and tossing and turning in bed. It has the same effect as drinking a cup of coffee.

Smokers will usually stay in a light sleep and spend less time in deep restorative sleep, and may not even enter deep sleep. Nicotine also reduces the amount of REM sleep. You should now be well aware of the health dangers this leads to. Nicotine withdrawal (the decrease of nicotine level in the body and the need to replenish it) usually tends to wake up the smoker 3 to 4 hours after falling asleep. Long-term chronic smokers may also develop respiratory problems and cough, which greatly interferes with sleep. I remember a man I had met some years ago, a chronic smoker; he had been smoking 1 pack and a half a day for many years. He would cough so much at night he wouldn’t sleep; he couldn’t lay down more than 10 minutes without coughing and also had trouble breathing. The scary part is he was only 45 years old. So if you are a smoker and would like to improve your sleep, you know what to do! I am not telling you to quit cold turkey; you could at least stop smoking 1 or 2 hours before going to sleep. I know to some of you this seems impossible; well would you rather remain with your sleep problem?

A last word on cigarette smoking: even with all this information available to you, if you decide to keep smoking, and can’t give up that last cigarette of the day, please make sure you do not smoke it in bed, or fall asleep with your cigarette lit in your hand. Every year many, many people are injured, and others die in fires caused by someone who fell asleep with a lit cigarette. Be responsible, and you may save lives.

3. Caffeine: If you didn’t know it yet, caffeine is, according to wikipedia.com “the world’s most popular psychoactive drug”. It is widely used for its stimulating effect, to stay alert, and fight sleepiness. It is therefore absolutely logical caffeine should be avoided in all its forms as we get closer to the end of the day. But logic is not always followed. Have you ever found yourself drinking a caffeinated drink less than 6 hours before going to bed? Well if you have this bad habit, change it right away because it can take up to 6 hours for caffeine effects to wear off.

Here are some of the known effects of caffeine:

-Stimulates the central nervous system

-Increases alertness

-Increases heart rate

-Diuretic (makes you urinate more)

-Raises body temperature

Another little known fact is that caffeine is not just found in coffee. As a matter of fact it is contained in many other common foods and it also has different names such as:

-Guaranine

-Mateine

-Theine

And here is a list of the foods we can find caffeine in:

-Coffee

-Soft Drinks

-Chocolate

-Energy drinks

-Tea

-Some Diet Pills

Of course not all theses foods contain the same amount of caffeine. Chocolate for example has a low caffeine content. But did you know that a serving of soft drink contains 10 mg to 50 mg of caffeine, when an average serving of coffee contains 40 mg. You see soft drinks are as much of a stimulant as coffee is. Also know that “decaf” does contain caffeine, but in smaller amount. Odds are, you know you shouldn’t drink coffee at night and therefore you avoid it.

But are you avoiding soft drinks as well? If you are drinking a couple of cans of soda within 6 hours of going to bed, you are increasing the caffeine in your body, which in turn stimulates your nervous system, and will make it harder for you to either fall asleep, or stay asleep. You may toss and turn in bed with your eyes open for hours and wonder why you just can’t relax and go to sleep; the answer may lie in those cans of soda you had a few hours ago, or even the cup of coffee you had after dinner.

As a rule of thumb, if you have trouble sleeping at night, you should avoid all caffeine containing food within 6 hours of going to bed. You will dramatically increase your chances of going to sleep and staying asleep, you will find it is much easier to relax, turn your mind off and finally get the rest you need.

A side note on caffeine: Some people consider caffeine as a substitute for sleep. They will just disregard their lack of sleep and “compensate” with one cup of coffee after another to stay awake and alert. Knowing what you now know about the importance of sleep, I am sure you understand this is not something you should do. Your body will accumulate fatigue, will not be able to repair itself and will eventually breakdown (disease).

There is absolutely NO substitute for sleep. If you are not sleeping enough, drinking coffee, soda or taking caffeine pills to keep you awake and “functioning” is not a solution. It can become a vicious cycle, leading to addiction: someone does not sleep well at night, wakes up tired without energy and decides to drink coffee all day long to “stay awake”. Caffeine accumulates in the system and when the time to sleep comes, this person can’t relax and stays wired due to all the coffee drunk during the day. The next day, he wakes up tired again and starts the process over. If this is happening to you, your health could be in serious danger and I would recommend you find a way out of the addiction, and stop relying on coffee. You will be tired at first, maybe even completely exhausted, but your body isn’t a machine!

4. Sugar: Sugar is not technically a stimulant but its effects are similar. The intake of sugar will cause a raise in your body insulin level to metabolize it, leading to a surge of energy. Amongst other things sugar stimulates the release of dopamine, which can lead to hyperactivity. Knowing this, you will probably want to stay away from all high sugar content foods, especially refined white sugar. This means no sodas (again), ice cream, candy bars, cookies and many other things!

The average soda, for example, contains about 40 mg of refined sugar, which is equivalent to about 10 teaspoons of sugar. Not only does sugar interfere with sleep but it also leads to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay. From now on, make a conscious effort to avoid refined white sugar, and yes you will have to change your habits, but there can’t be any results without change. You body will thank you for it.

5. Exercising at night: You must know that exercising at night or shortly before bedtime can have the opposite effect and keep you up. To prevent this sort of problem, you should always avoid exercising close to bedtime. As a rule, do not exercise 3 hours before going to bed. It is much better to exercise in the morning, and if you don’t have time, you could start waking up 30 minutes earlier.

As you become familiar with your sleep, understand your natural rhythms, and start getting good quality, deep restorative sleep, you will notice that waking up earlier is actually easy and gives you more energy. Take advantage of this extra time to exercise instead of ending the day with it.

Insomnia Withdrawal Symptoms

Withdrawal as the word suggests refers to pulling back or retirement of a prevailing status and the after effects pertaining to such changed situations. Insomnia Withdrawals in a simpler way deals with the physical and mental stress observed by a person in the course of an unexpected and sudden hampering or shortage of a substance used by him for a long period. The causes supporting symptoms of withdrawals are numerous.

Insomnia withdrawals can only be rectified by following a very slow process. As such insomnia is a common symptom found among various addictive disorders few to be named as drugs, alcohol etc. Depression is commonly influenced by insomnia. Overcoming insomnia is not a difficult task but rather involves a long duration competing with a strategically planned routine which should be followed on a strict base.

Symptoms of insomnia withdrawals are very mild unlike any other withdrawals. They are usually not life threatening. What Is Motivation? A True Story to Illustrate the Meaning

What is motivation? It’s a question I have been asked so many times. I have been working in the field of motivation for 17 years now. It is not only my career it is my passion and something that I enjoy both educating and improving in others and also studying myself.

I feel driven to write this article due to what I see happening around me now on a daily basis. So many are suffering and feeling battered and bruised due to the incompetence and greed that now seems to govern our world. From self-serving politicians and the privileged few who seem to run our governments for personal gain to the large corporate machines that seem intent on fleecing every penny from us mere ‘common folk’ it can be hard just to keep yourself going.

In this series of articles I will endeavour to help you understand;

· What motivation is and the mechanics that drive our own motivation

· How we can ensure we are ‘Positively Motivated’

· How to overcome the barriers that can so often dampen and dilute our ‘positive’ motivation

I do this because I genuinely care, I do this because I know that your life, my life and everyone’s life can be so much more fulfilling and rewarding with only a few very simple little tweaks to the way we perceive ourselves and the world around us.

So ‘What is Motivation?’

Firstly ‘motivation’ is just a word, the dictionary definition is;

motivation

  • 1 a reason or reasons for doing something.
  • 2 desire to do something; enthusiasm.

The first definition ‘a reason to do something’ is the most accurate and concise definition. In all the years I have been working with individuals from a huge spectrum of backgrounds and professions it is so evident that we are always motivated. With every action and behaviour we give clues to our motives and what we are motivated by or to do. Even as you sit here now reading this you are motivated!

The point being that motivation is a constant, it drives everything we do and all of the results/outcomes we achieve. This is such an important point if you really want to understand motivation. So often people wrongly associate motivation with positive actions and positive results/outcomes however even when we are acting and behaving in a way that serves no tangible benefit to ourselves we are motivated to do so.

You see motivation is driven by our emotional state and how we perceive both ourselves and the world around us. Recently I have been working pro-bono with some long-term unemployed clients. My clients are genuinely intelligent, capable and competent individuals who have been caught in the centre of the economic storm that has engulfed nearly all of us in some way. One man in particular, I shall call him Adam for this article (an alias to protect his identity), is a good example of both positive and negative motivation.

Adam was a successful and driven professional. Until the end of 2009 he was a performing sales director in the printing industry. He played golf, had a nice company car, went on two holidays a year and lived a very comfortable life with his family. Then the business he had helped develop and grow got into financial trouble. They were performing and had a good client base and his sales team were performing well, however, the company had expanded in 2008 and borrowed the money from the bank to increase their production to meet demand. This debt eventually engulfed the business and the bank was unwilling to renegotiate their terms even considering the temporary difficult trading conditions. Sadly, and quite abruptly, in November 2009 the business was forced into insolvency. Adam lost his job.

I first met Adam just after he was made redundant. He came to an executive job club I had set up for one of my clients. My first impression of him was that he was hugely experienced, competent and very marketable. He was confident that he could find a new job quickly and looking at his C.V. I had to agree that he would be an excellent candidate for any business looking to improve their sales function. Adam was confident and positive and a joy to work with. He not only played an active role in the job club for himself but was excellent working with and advising some of the other members. Then one day he stopped coming. I heard nothing from Adam so assumed, understandably I am sure you will agree, that he had found another job.

I next encountered Adam in May 2011. To be honest I didn’t actually recognise him. He was a shadow of himself. He looked dishevelled, beaten up and brow beaten. His positive air and drive had deserted him and he now had an aura of cynicism that followed him into the room. We sat and talked and I saw such a difference from the person I first met just a few years before. Gone was his positive outlook and confidence. Gone was the smile and desire to help others and share his experiences. All of these positive attributes had been replaced with a bitterness that seemed to take over his whole being.

I share this story with you because it illustrates the good and bad of motivation. It shows how our perception of ourselves and the world around us directly impacts on our behaviours and our motivators that in turn impacts on the results we can, and do, achieve. You see Adam had stopped coming to the job club not because he had found a new job but because he had run out of time and money. The bank was trying to repossess his house and push him into bankruptcy. Adam stopped coming, as he later admitted, because he was ashamed of the situation he found himself in and genuinely believed that he could no longer be of assistance to the other members and the group as a whole (pride works in funny ways sometimes!).

The Adam of 2011 was, as I mentioned before, engulfed and overcome with bitterness. We sat and chatted for a couple of hours and I heard, sadly, what I here so often from those caught in similar situations. Adam unleashed a tirade of negative vitriol against what our society had become. He lambasted the banks and corporations for destroying the fabric and stability of our economy, he viciously attacked the government for their pandering to the banks and corporations whilst leaving the honest hard working individuals to suffer and lose their homes and their pride. He was, on face value, a changed man.

Now, I am not in any way criticising Adam. In fact I totally agree that we do live in an epoch where we, the people, play second fiddle to those in power as you will no doubt surmise from my opening gambit to this article. The problem was simple, what good was this doing for Adam? How was it serving him? And, most importantly for this article, how had it effected his motivation?

I asked Adam about his current job hunting activity. What was he doing to improve his situation? The answer I got is all too common in the present climate “Nothing, I gave that up months ago. I mean what’s the point! There are no jobs out there and definitely not for a 52 year old man like me. No-one wants a 52 year old working for them when they can have some young graduate at a much lower salary!”

NB: at this point I feel it important to point out that I encounter as many ‘young graduates’ who cannot find suitable work as I do people of Adam’s age. Age is definitely NOT a barrier unless YOU perceive it to be.

So, how does this illustrate what motivation is?

As I wrote earlier: ‘motivation is a reason for doing something’

Even if that ‘something’ is nothing! Adam, like so many, had allowed his situation and all of the negative/painful experiences to affect how he saw himself. His perception of himself had been muddied by the external influences and the reality of existing, and being directly caught up in, the most dramatic economic slump any of us have experienced in our lifetime. The impact of this had changed his motivation because it had changed his view of the world he lived in. Where prior to all of this happening he had looked out on the world and seen hope, opportunity and possibility he now only saw suffering, pain and anguish. Where before he was motivated to achieve and find solutions for both himself and his business now he was motivated to do nothing and to wallow. His actual driver for this change in motivation is extremely common (some of your reading this will see similarities in your own experiences) he, like all of us, was motivated to prove himself right!

Now, this is no different to when he was a performing sales director. He believed in himself and that he was a competent and high performing executive and his actions and behaviours enabled him to prove himself right by developing a successful career and sales team. However, with his change in how he now perceived himself, “a 52 year old man on the scrap heap of life” (NB: his words not mine) his actions and behaviours now followed again to prove himself right.

I worked with Adam for the next three weeks and he attended my course ‘Breaking your shell’. He started to realise what he was allowing to happen to himself and he started to take ownership of his own self-perception. Over those weeks he (the man I met in 2009) came back, he started to realise that actually he had a lot to offer any business, he was highly skilled and extremely capable. He could be a valuable asset to any business and he was both marketable and employable. He got a job after four weeks. Not because of our conversation, even though sometimes we all need a little subjective feedback to kick start our rehabilitation to what we truly are and can be, but because he remembered who he was. A good and capable man who finds solutions and delivers positive results and he went out and started to prove himself right.

So in conclusion the answer to ‘What is motivation?’ the answer is as simple as ‘the reason for doing something’. What I hope you get from reading this article is that it is up to you to decide what it is your do. My advice is simple, remember who you are, think about what you have done and can do and see yourself in the most positive way this will ensure you go on to prove yourself right.
