Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Recent statistics show approximately 650,000 people die annually from heart disease. Every year approximately 800,000 people also experience their first heart attack often leading down the road to more serious heart disease. The cost of care for heart disease runs well over 10 billion annually. This disease takes a great toll of many people’s lives. There are numerous things you can do to help lessen your risk of developing heart disease. Most people think of coronary heart disease which is the narrowing of the arteries leading to the heart. However there are many different types of heart disease. These include arrhythmias, congenital heart disease, blood vessel disease, heart failure and congenital heart disease among others.

Arrhythmia: The heart normally beats 60 to 100 times per minute. When there is any abnormality it is considered an arrhythmia. This can occur in various forms; a rhythm change or a rate change to higher or lower than normal. Coronary heart disease: This is when the arteries harden often leading to potential heart attacks. This is due to a decrease in the oxygen that goes to the heart. Heart Failure: This actually is referring to the heart not pumping as effectively as it should. This affects over 5 million Americans, particularly people over the age of 65. It could result in water retention, swelling and shortness of breath. Congenital Heart Disease: This is a disorder that someone is born with. Sometimes the symptoms appear immediately but occasionally they may not appear until the person becomes an adult. Often this is hereditary or the result of some type of viral infection the fetus may have been exposed too. Congenital heart disease can affect the heart structure or blood vessels.

Testing for Heart Disease: There are many diagnostic tests that can be performed to determine if you have heart disease. Your doctor will determine which tests are best for you based on various factors including symptoms and medical history. An initial physical exam will include listening to your heart with a stethoscope to check for any abnormal sounds or rhythms. Your blood pressure will be checked and x rays may be taken to view the shape of the heart to check for abnormalities. If the doctor feels you need more testing that will be determined based on the results of the initial physical exam.

Dietary Considerations: It is important for everyone to follow a heart healthy diet. Doing so will help lesson your risk of developing heart disease in the future. If you have heart disease it is even more important to eat a healthy well balanced diet. This will reduce bad cholesterol also known as LDL, and lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Eat Good Fats Only: Good fats are ones that are high in Omega 3 fatty acids. These can be found in fish such as salmon and tuna. It is also found in vegetable oils such as olive and canola oil. You should limit saturated fats and trans fats as these are unhealthier for the heart. Increase dietary fiber: This also helps to lower LDL levels. Fiber can be found in vegetables, whole grains, beans and fruit. Lean Protein: Incorporate lean proteins in your diet. These can be found in chicken, turkey, seafood. Occasional lean cuts of beef are okay but beef does have higher levels of saturated fat so moderation is in order. Complex Carbs: These carbs are good for you and include whole grain bread and brown rice. Avoid simple carbohydrates because they contain sugar. Examples include soda, cookies, ice cream, etc. Regular meals: Avoid skipping meals or any type of crash diets. You need to always eat a healthy well balanced diet and have three complete meals daily. Or five to six mini meals is another option. This will help keep blood sugar levels stabilized as well. Limit your sodium or salt intake.

Exercise: To help prevent heart disease an exercise program is very important. If you already have heart disease it is equally important to stay active and fit. This should always be done with the authorization of your medical doctor to avoid any risks to your health. Your doctor will determine a program that is appropriate for you and your particular condition. What exercise does for the heart is amazing. The heart muscles themselves become strong and blood flow is improved as well. Of course exercise also keeps your weight under control and also helps raise your HDL or good cholesterol levels.

You should be doing a combination of cardiovascular and aerobic type exercise. Aerobic exercise is the most beneficial for your heart. This exercise lowers blood pressure as well as heart rate. Cardiovascular exercise is also good as it works the large muscle groups of your body. It increases oxygen levels and helps to strengthen your heart and lungs. Some good aerobic exercise choices would be walking, bike riding or any type of aerobic dance activity, among others. You should aim to exercise 3 times weekly for 30 minutes at a time. You can break up the 30 minute program into three-ten minute exercise spurts at different times of the day. To avoid any problems always do a warm up and cool down when exercising to ease your body into physical movement. Does not exercise immediately after eating; always wait at least one hour. It is important to find an exercise program that you are comfortable with and that you can stick with. Consistency is the key. Finding someone to exercise with can also help you to stay committed as it provides additional encouragement and support.

Precautions: If you have heart disease you should always take precautions when exercising. If you feel any of the follow symptoms you need to immediately stop exercising. These include; chest or arm pain, trouble breathing, heart palpitations or extreme fatigue. Elevate your feet in a resting position and contact your doctor. Your doctor will know best if this is a sign that you need a change in medication or changes in your diet. As with any changes in diet or lifestyle always consult with your medical doctor first especially if you have any disease or are taking prescription medications.

9 Different Drugs That Are Incompatible With Diabetic Medicures

People with diabetes often have many other serious medical problems as well. A recent study found that diabetics take an average of six remedies for other medical conditions each day. Some of these drugs are safe to take with diabetic medications. However, some of these drugs can also cause extremely bad reactions when mixed with diabetic remedies.

Ideally you have made all of your doctors aware of every medication you are taking so that they will not put you on drugs that can have adverse interactions with your other medications. However, when you are taking a lot of different drugs, it is hard for your doctor to expect every possible interaction. You should take responsibility for yourself to research each of the drugs you are taking. You should take note of all of the interactions those drugs are known to have with other drugs so that you will be able to spot any bad combinations yourself.

In addition to adverse consequences from the drugs themselves, many of the drug interactions and resulting bad reactions may be cloaked under a condition you already have. 3. Thiazide diuretics: These diuretics can cause a loss of potassium, which can lead to rising blood glucose levels. Some examples of Thiazide diuretics are Oretic, Diuril, hydroDiuril, and Zaroxolyn.

4. Classic oral contraceptives: Those using the same oral contraceptives that they've used for many years should check to make sure their safe for them to continue taking. While the newer oral contraceptives are mostly safe for diabetics to take, the older oral contraceptives were prone to causing hypoglycemia in those susceptible.

5. Calcium channel blockers: These can reduce insulin secretions from the pancreas. Some examples are Norvasc, Adalat, Isoptin, Calan, and Procardia.

6. Thyroid hormone: This can cause a reduction in insulin secretions from the pancreas.

7. Niacin: This B vitamin helps the body control cholesterol. It can also raise your blood sugar if you're a diabetic.

8. Diphenylhydantoin: Commonly sold under the name Dilantin, this drug is useful in preventing seizures. However, it can block pancreatic insulin release.

9. Corticosteroids: You might not think that a topical cream would affect your blood glucose levels, but corticosteroids taken in this manner can in fact raise your blood glucose levels.

How To Fight Childhood Obesity

Today, 12.5 million children are overweight in the United States and and more than 17 percent. Overweight children are at greater risk for many serious health problems.That's why it has become so important to fight childhood obesity.Obese children can develop serious health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease, often carrying these conditions into an obese adulthood.

Overweight children are at higher risk of developing: Type 2 diabetes, Metabolic syndrome, High blood pressure, Asthma and other respiratory problems, Sleep disorders, Liver disease, Early puberty or menarche, Eating disorders, Skin infections, and The social and emotional challenges that can cause severe depression or low self-esteem due to social isolation.

In fact, children often tease or bully their overweight peers causing an increased risk of depression as a result. Then this can be directly related to learning problems. Overweight children tend to have more anxiety and poorer social skills than normal-weight children have. These problems may lead to acting out and disabling the classroom. Also, they may cause social withdrawal. Stress and anxiety interfere with learning.

School-related anxiety can create a vicious cycle in which ever-growing worry fuels ever-declining academic performance. This is just one more reason to fight childhood obesity.

How do you fight childhood obesity? Treatment for childhood obesity is based on the childrens age and if he / she has any other medical conditions. Treatment will typically include changes in the childs diet and the level of physical activity for your child. Sometimes, treatment may include medications and / or weight-loss surgery.

For a child under 7 years old who has no other health concerns, the goal of treatment may be weight maintenance rather than weight loss. This strategy allows the child to add inches but not pounds. But, for an obese child, maintaining weight while waiting to grow taller may be as difficult as losing weight for older people.

Weight loss is typically recommended for children over age 7 or for young children who have related health concerns. A childs weight loss should be slow and steady, anywhere from 1 pound (0.45 kilograms) a week to 1 pound a month, depending on the childs situation.

The methods a child would use for fighting obesity or losing weight are the same:

1. The child needs to eat a healthy diet.

The parents are the ones who buy the food, cook the food and decide where the food is ateen. Small changes can make a big difference in the childs health. When a parent is buying groceries, they choose fruits and vegetables over convenience foods that are high in sugar and fat. They should have healthy snacks available. Never use food as a reward or punishment. Sweetened beverages should be limited, even those containing fruit juice. These drinks provide little nutritional value in exchange for their high calories. They can also make the child feel too full to eat healthy foods. Sit down together for family meals. Discourage eating in front of a screen. This leads to fast eating and lowers the awareness of how much you're eating. Limit the number of times you eat out, especially at fast-food restaurants.

2. The child needs to increase his / her physical activity.

A critical component of weight loss, especially for a child, is physical activity. It burns calories and also builds strong bones and muscles. It helps children sleep well at night and stay alert during the day. If these habits are established in childhood, it will help adolescents maintain healthy weight despite the hormonal changes, rapid growth, and social influences that can often lead to overeating. Survival Tips For Chemo and Radiation – Part 1

I can not tell you how many women I speak to that have regrets about going the traditional chemo-radiation route. I have heard tales of finger nails turning black and blue and periodically falling off, mouth and esophageal ulcers, rotting teeth, heart damage, nerve damage, diabetes, hair loss, blistering skin from radiation burns, weight loss, weight gain … and the list goes on. The good news is that your body can repair and heal from these toxic therapies, given specific nutrients.

Let's start with the side effects of Radiation.

I witnessed my own mother receiving radiation burns as a result of radiation therapy for Breast Cancer. Her breast blistered, became red hot and was as hard as a brick. It remained that way for years.

Medical radiation may reduce the tumor load initially, but it is doing nothing to address the circulating stem cells which are responsible for re-seeding and fueling the growth of the tumor. In fact, increased radiation exposure has been shown to increase your Breast Cancer risk.

Clastogenic Factors (CFs) were first described in the blood of persons irradiated accidentally or for therapeutic reasons. These factors are defined as mutagenic, since they break up chromosomes and often lead to the development of cancerous tissues.

But do not despair and think that once you are radiated there is no hope for your body to repair itself. My friend from "down under", Jillian Exton, has compiled a list of supplements based on clinical research that can help you get the side-effects of radiation. Her book, " What's Your Plan " is a must for anyone who has been through the traditional toxic therapies.

Jillian wrote this book after experiencing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. She was searching for natural ways to manage the side effects of her treatment. Discussions with her medical team on possible supplementation with various nutrients always resolved in the need for clinical studies and evidence, in order to make informed decisions. And so the seed for the book was planted.

Here are a few of the recommendations in her book on managing side effects of radiation:

  • Astragalus is an herb used in traditional Chinese Medicine to support the Immune System. It has anti-tumor effects and decrees organ damage from radiation. It increased survival in mice treated with radiation.

  • Curcumin is one of my favorite anti-inflammatory herbs and has strong anti-tumor properties. It has a very protective affect on radiation.
  • Omega 3 Fatty Acids are essential for reducing inflammation and have well established anti-cancer benefits. A German study conducted in 2011 demonstrated the protective effect on healthy cells but increased the effectiveness of the radiation on cancer cells.
  • Ginko Biloba Extract is an herbal that is high in anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants in this extract reduced the blood markets of radiation exposure in people that were exposed to ionizing radiation because of their occupation.

I will add one of my favorite ways to overcome the effects of radiation … miso. I do not have a specific study on this, as I learned this years ago when I was studying and applying the Macrobiotic Diet by Mishio Kushi. After the horrific events of Hiroshima due to the nuclear bombarding, radiation injuries were rampant. However, doctors noticed that the people that still had access to their daily cup of miso (fermented soy bean paste) had fewer radiation side effects compared to those without the miso soup.

The bacterium in the miso would bind the radiation and expel it form the body at a more rapid pace. More recent studies have shown that miso does have a protective effect from radiation.

Psoriasis – Understanding the Most Wide Spread Chronic Dermatitis

In rural areas the frequency of psoriasis is usually 3-4 times less frequent than in the urban areas.

Psoriasis appears on skin as inflated lesions, peeling and scales. The scales can be easily removed, and benefit them there lays an yet denser scale. In addition to the skin psoriasis may as well strike the nails and joints.

The average cycle of shedding of normal skin cells occurs approximately in 4 weeks, with psoriasis this process takes only 4-5 days. The course of psoriasis usually has a sharply expressed seasonality. Tofu in Chinese Cuisine: An Introduction

I do not know how familiar you are with tofu. It is made from soy, and it is widely used across the whole of China. I still remember when I was little back in China, my mum would put a coin on my hand, and ask me to go to the street's corner to buy a piece of tofu.

The tofu was stacked in layers by wooden boards and because it was just freshly made, I could see the hot steams coming out from it. I started loving all sorts of food made from soy, and my mum felt a sigh of release: I never liked meat very much, and soy products could make up all the protein I might miss.

Many different kinds of tofu can be found in the markets in China. Although their taste is not very distinct, their texture varies very much. Different kinds of tofu can be cooked differently, and combined with different things.

Firm to medium-firm Tofu

If you want to make the tofu firmer, you can quickly boil it or steam it. This kind of tofu is well-suited for preparing Chinese salads. If you only just want the surface to get firmer, you can fry it with a little bit of oil.

Deep fried tofu is called 'tofu pao' (literally, tofu with bubbles). Tofu prepared this way could get 'spongy', and can easily absorb sauces, so it is good for soup. It can be purchased in the shops, but since it is easy to make, I normally prepare it myself.

If your tofu gets accidently frozen, do not throw it away. Frozen tofu (called 'dong tofu' in Chinese) is widely used in the North of China. The Northern provinces in China get really cold in winter, so tofu could easily get frozen outside. Sometimes I miss this kind tofu, so I just leave the fresh tofu in the freezer for a few hours, until it is completely frozen, then take it out to defrost it for getting ready to cook.

Frozen tofu is traditionally cooked with pickled Chinese leaves. Its taste and texture is very similar to 'pickled cage' and nowdays it is very commonly used for Chinese hot pot.

Silken tofu

This kind of tofu is really soft, almost impossible to pick up by chopsticks. In the North of China is it often used in salad, soup, or together with preserved duck eggs.

Tofu nao

It is a kind of 'homemade' silken tofu and it is very traditional it the North of China. I still remember my grandma making it, and she used to tell the me many stories of having Tofu Nao when she was young.

Traditionally, it is made from soya milk. Add coagulant to get it firmer, then pour prepared soup on top of it, have it with a spoon. The common soup to go with it is eggs, Mu'er (Black Fungus) or Chinese mushroom. It is another common breakfast dish.

Dry tofu sheet

At least this is the literal translation from Chinese. It is very similar to tofu, but it comes as a sheet rather than a soft cube. It is one of most common soya bean products in the North of China, along with firm tofu.

It is normally made into salad or stir fried. The easiest way to use it is to spread some soy paste and put a piece of spring onion on the tofu sheet, roll it up; then, just enjoy !!

If this sounds like you, you're probably far familiar with the devastating consequences of anxiety. Many people downplay their exotic behavior or accept it as just the way things are. The eternal search and 26 tips of how to find a good tattoo artist:

There is nothing really new happening on the market, after I wrote about amputations and about magnet implants. The newest thing is called “Brain Piercing”. Unfortunately I can’t write about it at the moment since I’m still doing some research on the subject, this way I will be able to write an article worthy of all of you.

But, I thought that my latest experience was very interesting, not very extreme, but so far the most interesting tattoo I’ve got. Thinking about the few rejections that I had I thought that many people might go through the same problem. So I decided to make it public.

For the last few years I had this idea for beautiful a tattoo. It was supposed to be a line of mirrored phoenixes starting on my neck following down on my spine down to my tail bone.

Easier said than done I guess…

So a few months before my 34th birthday I started to look for an artist to do the work. As many people know, Brazil is a well known country in the tattoo industry. We have really great professionals down here.

So here I’m with the project, but because I’m very picky as to who will tattoo my body, I could only choose a hand full of professionals among hundreds. From many portfolios that I saw I thought that only those guys would be able to do a decent job out of my very full of micro details idea.

From those five ultra qualified professionals none wanted to do the tattoo. All of them told me that it was literally impossible. And the only one that was going to take the challenge, because I did agree to make the phoenixes a bit larger than what I wanted, had a family problem.

Time passed, I became older and no tattoo. For my tattoo addicted friends and readers, I’m sure that I do not have to explain the feeling, but for the people that do not have the tattoo “bug”, I can say that it is really frustrating. It feels more or less like you have spent months gathering the money to go your favorite group performance, and exactly on the show day the band decided to split up for good.

So here I was with the ticked and no show, or better saying with the drawing and no artist.

The other day while I was walking on the street I saw a small tattoo parlour. And being so devoted to get my body covered with phoenix images I thought about stopping there for a couple of minutes to check out his work.

The worst that could happen was I would meet another wannabe. Actually the market is full of them. Most of the tattoo artists around are not that great. After I finish this story I will add the guide of how to find gold between pebbles.

Going back to the tale: I went inside the studio and there was this, let me please state the obvious, tattoo covered guy. His name is Flavio Vandroiy, I hadn’t heard about him at all, but once I was there I decided to give him a shot, he had a client waiting, so our first contact was brief, but even though, to my surprise, he was very attentive.

Now, if you know a few renowned tattoo artists you will understand that more and more the pop star idea is truly affecting our fellas. Boy, most of the time it feels like they are part of the royalty and are doing you the favor of looking at your face, even if only for five minutes of their precious time. Please note that there are some exceptions, one of them is the lovely Pierre Chapelan, whom, many years ago, I had the pleasure to being tattooed by while I was living in Montreal.

I checked out one of Flávio Vandroiy’s portfolios on paper and after analyzed his work better through his website. The work looked pretty good. His tattoos were signed by steady and clear lines. Then I saw a picture of a tattoo that was very small and full of details, I analyzed it for about one hour looking at every single detail. After that I thought that he would probably be able to do a good job out of my drawing. I sent him an e-mail with the image of my phoenix attached, after a day he sent me an honest reply. He told me that the drawing was quite small, but he would take up the challenge.

So we got the image on my back and of course I complained about the position. He patiently erased the drawing and did it again. Even if I was pleased with the position, I thought about to complain just to see his reaction. But there was no need to do it; he told me that he could be changing it up until I was happy with the placement. So I kept quiet. I hate to push nice willing people. If he was a jerk I would probably had changed the position another couple of times.

He did an amazing job, out of something that many thought to be impossible to accomplish. One of the nicest things about this guy is that he is humble enough to tell me that after we finish all the phoenixes we will have to go back and do some touch up on the images that he thought could be better done. I did agree with him, some of the birds’ faces, if you look at a picture taken with the micrometric of a camera, are not identical.

I have many tattoos, made by many hotshots in the industry, including my very special first tattoo that was made by Marco Leoni himself. Even if it is an old tattoo; I got it when I was a pre-tee and it did suffer quite a bit with stretch due my growth and the thousands of times that I put it through the monstrous process of leg waxing, it still here, not as pompous as it was once, but every time I look at it, I know that this old phoenix helped me to became who I am.

The truth is that I’m in love with this new tattoo; so far it is really the best quality small work that I’ve seen. If you look at it from far it looks like the finest and most delicate lace that you can buy.

Ok, after my narcissistic story I will, as promised, add a few tips on how to know when a tattoo artist is good or he is just another self proclaimed tattooer with the artist title. Notice that international prizes even if prestigious are judged not in the artist daily work. The prizes are given to artists based in only one work, done once during a competition. I considered it as very small sample to be worth of a prize, if you take in consideration that many tattoo artists do between three or four tattoos in studio a day.

1) Of course the studio must be clean and the material properly sterilized, the artist must wear gloves all the time, and the ink should be poured into small containers, avoiding contamination of the material.

2) Look at the artist’s portfolio very carefully, not only to appreciate it; you will be searching for very small imperfections.

3) The lines on a tattoo have to be smooth, jagged lines and shaky lines are a big no go.

4) The color has to be well applied through the entire image, without leaving empty spots.

5) The way in which the artist uses and combines colors is also very important. Especially if you are looking for the water-color effect.

6) Big tattoos are easier to master than small tattoos. Even if the sleeves and the full backs get more attention, small tattoos are much more complicated to make. So while looking at the artist’s portfolio, check out his small and more detailed work. A good hint is to look for some tattoos of birds and check out the feathers and the bird’s face.

7) Also pay attention to the work that the person does when reproducing cartoon characters. This kind of reproduction is very complicated due the amount of details, the perfect thickness of the lines and the coloration.

8) If the price is an issue on the size or the type of the tattoo that you are getting, I suggest you wait and save some more money. It is better wait and to do exactly what you dreamed about than settle for less.

9) You have to get along with the artist and not feel intimidated by him. A good artist will allow you to give your input and will not feel offended by a comment or a suggestion. Remember it is your body and you want to enjoy every second of the experience.

10) Many people have the idea that the tattooer has to be crazy, always high and someone in line with a dark figure. It is a myth; many of those artists are lovely, sometimes married and often proud parents. If you suspect that the artist is under any substance influence, or has any addictions you should think before allowing him to work on you. It is a well known fact that alcoholics and junkies have problems with shaky hands.

11) Also respect it when the artist gives his honest opinion. If you don’t agree just try to find another person to make the tattoo. This way you will avoid to feel like the work was not properly done due to personal reasons.

12) If you choose an image from a catalog, and want to do some changes on it, a good artist will do those changes with pleasure, and will not complain if you want more changes on it on when the sketch is already redone, of course you should know where to draw the line between some more changes and be unreasonable, don’t forget this person makes a living out of making tattoos.

13) A good professional is not always the one that just makes a tattoo properly, to do a proper job is an obligation of a good professional. To me a good professional has to make the client aware of few details about tattoos.

14) If you are a woman, and want to have kids, a tattoo on your stomach or on the lateral of your waist line, no matter if horizontally or vertically, might not be a good idea; it will stretch due the pregnancy and loose some of its beauty.

15) Again if you are a woman, it might not be a good idea to get a tattoo during your period or while in the PMS process. Due some hormonal changes you will be more inclined to feel pain or worse, the healing process can be compromised.

16) Every tattoo when fresh looks great. The artist should remind you that what you see is what you get, for a while. The ink will fade away. Of course you can delay the process taking good care of it, but eventually, it will fade and partially lose some of its beauty.

17) The black ink after few years will become bluish. There is no way to avoid it. To fix the color you will have to retouch the tattoo. You can also try to understand that it is a part of your body and such as it has the right to age. In my case I do not retouch my tattoos. To me my tattoos are part of a moment lost in the past, and because they are memories they will tend to fade with time.

18) While big and bulky tattoos will only have the color fade problem, small and very detailed tattoos, will lose the sharpness on the details, and often will look like if they were poorly done.

19) It is a good idea to get a tattoo during winter. During the summer you will have problems with the plastic bandage; it will keep the tattoo constantly moist. The moist can delay the healing, opening a window for infections. The healing process will also be very, very itchy.

20) If you can’t avoid getting a tattoo during the summer, be ready to use of antihistaminic pills. They will come handy.

21) If you must to scratch the tattoo, it is better if you pat yourself. Never use your nails.

22) Don’t drink or use drugs before getting a tattoo, it won’t ease the pain and alcohol can actually make you bleed more.

23) Depending on your line of work a visible tattoo can be a problem. Something that one day I hope will change, but so far, if you are one of those professionals, try to make a tattoo in a place that is easy to hide while you are wearing any kind of clothing.

24) The hardest thing to say is; never do a tattoo because it is fashionable, or because your idol has one. A tattoo is something personal. It will be with you every single day of your life. It is much more difficult to get rid of one than to get rid of an ex-spouse.

25) When choosing the image for a tattoo, choose something that means something to you. Sure a butterfly is lovely so are flowers, a cute star on your wrist is very sexy. But how will you feel about them when you are sixty?

26) And last but not the least. Never get a tattoo on impulse. There are many other things to do when you are bored, if you need a “quick fix” try to get a drastic hair change or buy some new clothes. Tattoos are something to really think about. Something to be seen and carried as art. If well thought and well chosen the process of getting a tattoo, can take years to happen, but it can definitely change your entire life.
