Inguinal Hernia Treatment Information

An inguinal hernia, or a groin hernia, is a protrusion (lump) of the small intestine or fatty tissue into the groin through a weakness or tear in the abdominal wall. There are two types of inguinal hernia, direct and indirect. Direct inguinal hernias occur when abdominal contents herniate through a weak point in the fascia of the abdominal wall and into the inguinal canal. Indirect inguinal hernias occur when abdominal contents protrude through the deep inguinal ring; this is ultimately caused by failure of embryonic closure of the internal inguinal ring. Symptoms of inguinal hernia may include a lump in the groin near the thigh; pain in the groin.

In severe cases, partial or complete blockage of the intestine. A hernia also may cause swelling and a feeling of heaviness, tugging, or burning in the area of the hernia. Several risk factors have been implicated in the development of groin hernias, including obesity, pregnancy, and perhaps most importantly aging. People with a family history of inguinal hernias are more likely to also have them. Inguinal hernias can occur in children and adults. If you have a hernia, surgery is the only way to treat a hernia. Laparoscopic hernia surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis. Incarcerated and strangulated hernias require emergency surgery.

Laparoscopic surgery is not recommended for very large hernias. Follow a healthy diet that is rich in fiber and drink plenty of fluids to prevent constipation, maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise, avoiding cigarette smoking, which can cause coughing Chronic. Keeping the weight down, keeping the abdominal muscles in shape, avoid lifting heavy objects and avoid straining to urinate or defecate.Other techniques, such as caudal anesthesia or paravertebral block, are used less commonly for inguinal hernia repair because of the general acceptance of the above techniques. General anesthesia provides complete relaxation.

Inguinal Hernia Treatment and Prevention Tips

1. Keeping weight down

2. Avoid lifting heavy objects

3. Avoid straining to urinate or defecate.

4. A healthy diet that is high in fiber useful.

5. Keeping the abdominal muscles in shape.

6. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent constipation.

7. Avoiding cigarette smoking, which can cause coughing.

8. Surgery is the only way to treat a hernia.

The Anxiety and Depersonalization Anger Factor

I’ll bet you are known among the majority of your friends and relatives as the “nice” guy or gal who never argues or loses their temper. You also are there for everyone and in fact, cannot remember the last time you said “no” to a request. I’ll also bet you pride yourself on this behavior and feel it is quite an attribute. You are “there” for whomever needs you, and are the consummate good hearted and reliable friend. Everyone seems to love you and life is good, but why do you experience more and more anxiety and often feelings of brain fog known as depersonalization?

I’ll tell you why.

Although it sounds wonderful, on paper, to be the “perfect” friend and relation, this is not always the ideal prescription for balanced emotional health. It is a natural part of human nature to sometimes feel angry, experience the anger through and express oneself in a healthy way when angry…and the world will still go on turning.

The mind-set of someone who is prone to anxiety and/or depersonalization, does not view the expression of anger as an “acceptable” behavior. Therefore, this person will go to all lengths to rein their anger in, resulting in physical and emotional manifestation of this very strong repressed emotion.

This person will bite their tongue, leave the room or even smile and agree before participating in a confrontation. Everyone thinks they are surely saints and they might even be well-loved, but deep down inside they are building an explosive mountain of repressed emotions.

Eventually, these emotions may manifest into backaches, headaches, anxiety or feelings of depersonalization. A generalized numbness or brain fog may replace emotions. Feelings seem to literally freeze as the emotion of anger is repressed. Holding back anger may create a strong sense of approval by those around you, but may also create a a stronger sense of self-hatred, if one is not careful. Pleasing everyone carries a high price-tag, because in the long run you are pleasing everyone but yourself.

The best time to express your anger is when you first experience it. The longer you wait, the less effective this strategy becomes. The longer you wait, the greater build-up of negative energy within, which eventually explodes or implodes into a physical or emotional reaction.

Managing Anger Effectively:

– Accept your anger. It is normal and healthy to experience anger.

– Express it while you experience the heat or as close to that time as possible. Expression of anger gone cold, while better than nothing, does not clear this energy in the same way.

– You are kidding yourself if you believe good people never get angry.

– Stick to issues rather than personalities when discussing angers.

– Understand that you will not lose your mind, go insane or implode by facing your anger.

– Address the anger as quickly as possible. The longer you wait, the less effective this becomes. This is a challenge but prevents manifestation of anxiety, dp and other symptoms of repressed emotions.

– Realize that expressing anger will not in any way annihilate a genuine relationship. Honesty will strengthen rather than sever a true bond between two people.

– Accept the fact that one can experience the heat of anger effectively without harming themselves or anyone else.

– Know that expression of true anger is exhilarating as it clears the air, one’s head and opens up a direct line of healthy communication.

– Grant yourself permission to be real with friends, co-workers and relatives. This is a much greater gift than holding back true feelings.

Learn to acknowledge, address and effectively live with the fact that there will be angers in your life, and you are able to respond to them without perishing. It is acceptable to say “no” and mean it, and to feel angry if the situation arises.

Anger is a natural reaction and part of the human condition. Life still goes on after you experience a healthy release of angry feelings. Raising one’s voice in the heat of the moment and saying what’s on your mind is also a natural part of life and can prevent the build up of negative energy. This in itself staves off unnecessary anxiety reactions.

Change your perception of anger, as part of the human condition and you change your life.

Experiencing anger does not indicate a crazy, out of control, or violent person. It signifies a human being with a full range of emotions, and the ability to acknowledge and express them fully, in a safe and healthy manner. Those who freeze one emotion or another will usually pay dearly for this choice. It is much healthier to allow your emotions to surface and deal with them in a swift and effective manner.

Ricado – Kaka

Full Name : Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite

Nick Name: Kaka Date of Birth: April 22, 1982 Nationality: Brazilian: Height : 183 cm. Marital Status: Married Current Club: AC Milan Position : Attacking Midfielder Kaka’s Quote: I can do all things through Christ who lives in me

Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite Or he is better known as Kaká. He got his nickname “Kaká” because his little brother Rodrigo could not pronounce the word Ricardo when they were young. Rodrigo called his older brother “Caca” which Ricardo later changed to “Kaká” Kaká began his club career with São Paulo at the age of eight. He signed a contract at fifteen and led the SPFC youth squad to Copa de Juvenil glory. Kaká made his senior side debut in January 2001 and scored twelve goals in 27 appearances.

At the age of eighteen, Kaká suffered a career-threatening and possibly paralysis-inducing spinal fracture . He risked his life by badly jumping off a diving-board which caused him the fracture of a vertebra. This could have meant the end of his football career but he believes Jesus allowed him to recover and become the star footballer he now is. For this reason, every time he scores he points his fingers to the sky as a sign of thank. Milan, fresh from winning the 2003 Champions League, brought him aboard in 2003 for €8.5 million, a fee described in hindsight as “peanuts” by club owner Silvio Berlusconi. Within a month, he cracked the starting lineup, and his Serie A debut was in a 2–0 win over A.C. Ancona.

Kaká’s career has flourished at AC Milan and his skills and talents were widely celebrated by the footballing world when he was awarded the Best Midfielder of the Champion’s League tournament in the 2004-2005 season, this despite Milan being beaten in the final by Liverpool. Kaká’s sparkling displays of footballing genius in the midfield position have seen football pundits drawing comparisons to Diego Maradona.

His greatest goal is considered to be the one he scored against Fenerbahçe SK in AC Milan’s first game in the 2005/2006 Champions League; won 3-1 by the Rossoneri . Kakà started his run from midfield and skipped past three tackles before entering the area and finishing with a low shot under the goal-keeper. At only 24 years of age Kaká’s talents have seen him become a respected player in both the European and International stage playing for both club and country.

How to Treat Bed Bug Bites

Scientists have revealed the preliminary description of the bed bug’s sialome – proteins in the saliva that allows the bed bug to feed on humans without fatal retaliation.

Bed bugs belong to a group of parasitic insects that feed on blood. Their success in feeding undisturbed depends in part on the proteins in their saliva. These substances cause the host’s blood vessels to dilate to ease the flow of blood into its body, inhibit clotting and to prevent immediate pain and itching.

The immune system determines the host’s response to the proteins. Bed bugs can cause a number of health effects including psychological effects, allergic reactions and physical effects such as prominent blisters on the skin.

Common allergic reactions include the development of large wheal accompanied by itching and inflammation that can last for several days. Multiple bites may trigger blister-like eruptions. People with severe allergies may develop anaphylaxis. The allergens from bed bug bites are associated with asthmatic reactions.

Bite marks grouped in a linear pattern are suspected to be bed bug bites. Post-bite effect happens in 3 stages which include no reaction (development of few or no antibodies), delayed reaction; immediate and delayed reaction, immediate reaction only and no visible reaction.

Symptoms include raised and inflamed wheal at each bite site with intermittent itching for several days. Immediate reaction can happen within 24 hours of the bite and lasts for 1 – 2 days.

Delayed reaction to bed bug bites appear in 1 to 3 days followed by redness and periodic intense itching that may last up to 5 days. Delayed reactions may take up to 9 days before lesions appear.

Medical experts say people who receive frequent bites develop the sensitivity syndrome that includes nervousness, constant agitation and insomnia. Medical literature suggests a person may develop secondary infections from scratching the wheal and the bites can cause blister-like eruptions on the skin, anaemia and anaphylactic reactions and trigger or worsen asthma.

Sometimes bed bug bites develop into a hard whitish swelling that leaves a dark red spot surrounded by a reddened area. Bed bug bites usually fade after a while, but sometimes old bites flare up if the wound was not healed properly and the person keeps on scratching the wheal.

If you were bitten by bed bugs and you react adversely to the bite, you must take some steps to treat the wheal so they can heal. You should consult your physician immediately after you become aware of the bites, especially if you develop severe allergic reactions.

Home remedies and over-the-counter medications are available to treat the bites. People’s skin respond differently to treatments so please consult your doctor before using any home remedy.

Home remedies

(a) Treat the affected area with ice to soothe the wound

(b) Clean the affected area with an antiseptic soap (e.g. Dettol) before treating the wound. This prevents microbes from entering the wound. Rinse with cold water and apply a paste of coconut oil (1 tablespoon) and roasted turmeric powder (1 tablespoon). Leave the treatment on for 8 hours.

(c) Spray lavender oil on the wound for instant relief from itching. If you have an allergic reaction to the bites you can take corticosteroids. Please consult your doctor before doing so.

(d) Apply mint, garlic or cayenne pepper to the affected area after treating the wound.

(e) Black pepper, walnut and red pepper are useful herbs to treat the bites.

(f) Mix a tablespoon of salt and a tablespoon of baking powder and add water to make a paste and apply it to the wound.

(g) Apply a thick paste of cornstarch and water to the wound. Corn starch removes toxins in the affected area.

(h) Apply an astringent such as witch hazel, St John’s Wort or lemon juice to a cotton wool and dab at the wound to reduce itching.

(i) Apply rubbing alcohol to the affected area to relieve itching. Avoid scratching the wounds to prevent infections.

(j) Use a few drops of cedar wood oil with other medications (e.g. oral or topical corticosteroids and antihistamines) to treat the inflammation.

(k) Add concentrated peppermint oil, baking soda, oatmeal or Alka-Seltzer (only if you are not allergic to aspirin) to a warm bath and soak in it to reduce the itching.

(l) Honey and aloe vera can also treat the wound. The gel from the aloe vera plant has antifungal and antibiotic properties to treat the wounds.

(m) If you are not allergic to aspirin you can dip a cotton ball into Alka-Seltzer solution and apply it to the wound.

(n) Apply a light paste of aspirin mixed with water to the wound (if you are not allergic to aspirin).

(o) A hot wash cloth on the affected area can also relieve the itching.

Over the counter remedies

(a) Creams like cortisone ointment and calamine lotion reduce inflammation, itching and speed healing.

(b) Topical anaesthetics containing pramoxine relieves pain. Diphenhydramine soothes itching.

(c) Antihistamine such as Benadryl controls swelling.

(d) Hydrocortisone cream eliminates itching.

(e) Prednisone, an oral steroid, can treat itching. This medication needs a doctor’s prescription.

(f) Naproxen or Ibuprofen reduces swelling.

(g) Zyrtec and Claritin (oral antihistamines) are available over the counter to reduce allergic reactions.

(h) For systemic allergic reactions a doctor sometimes administers injections of antihistamines, corticosteroids or epinephrine.

(i) Your doctor may prescribe antibiotic ointments or oral antibiotics if secondary bacterial skin infection develops.

Bed bugs are not known to carry diseases, but they have significant public health importance. They carry at least 40 human pathogens including viruses, bacteria, protozoa and parasitic worms. Researchers have confirmed that these pathogens are not transmitted to humans through the bite.

Methods and Procedures to Remove and Prevent the Growth of Mold and Mildew

Molds and mildews are a sort of fungus that usually develops in damp and warm conditions, devoid of much airflow. These micro organisms create enzymes that allow them to decompose and absorb organic matter. Molds have spores that permit them to spread easily without any hassle. Lack of ventilation, humid conditions, and plumbing leaks are one of the main reasons for the expansion of molds and mildews on the walls, both outside as well as inside. Heating pipes without appropriate insulation can also cause damp to build up behind the walls, which in place gives a suitable condition for the moulds to grow back again.

Mold and mildew are not good-looking and they can make a place look nasty and make out musty odor. Besides odors, mold growth also damages one’s property by decomposing wood, tearing of clothes, books and discoloring fabrics. Therefore mold and mildew cleaners should be used in places that are affected by its growth and is harming the nature of the place. Some of the popular areas that mold find their places are: cellars, basements and bathrooms because there is a lot of wetness available and there is little or no air flow. Fundamentally an area that is out of light and is dark is a perfect place for growth of mold.

One of the major steps towards the removal of mold and mildew is cleanliness. One should try to keep everything clean and make an attempt to keep the moisture down in the air, using purifiers and dehumidifiers. One can prevent the growth of mold and mildew by water proofing the surface so that there is no presence of water. One should also make sure about the proper circulation of air in one’s house, which prevents the growth of such mold in a place. There are a variety of mould and mildew cleaners and chemicals available, which can be used to remove mold and odors that are linked with mold. Chlorinated lime is one of the easiest and safest methods that can be applied in basements to get rid of mold odors. Floors and walls can be scrubbed with sodium hydrochloride or a light bleach solution to eliminate the growth of mold. It is vital to rinse with water after applying a cleaner or a chemical on to a surface.

Fungicide sprays also acts as mold and mildew cleaner, which can be applied on fabrics and clothes to eliminate the growth of mold. Very thin solutions of chlorine bleach, peroxide bleach, or lemon juice and salt is also an effective way of removing mold from clothes without touching the borders and colors. Arranging clothes in closet should be accompanied with some mold inhibitors such as paradichlorobenzene. These chemicals and cleaners are easily available and applied as per the requirement.

Mold will also affect many other objects such as leather, wood, paper and books therefore mold and mildew cleaner cleaners should be applied on such object too. At times simply wiping down the substance will remove the mold, but if the damage is too extensive, for instance in wood, then the thing may need to be disposed off or replaced. An easy and handy trick for books is to spray talcum powder or cornstarch to soak up any dampness that may be in one’s book rack or in the book itself.

Shingles Treatment Tips

Shingles also known as herpes zostrer. Shingles is a same virus that causes chickenpox. Shingles can cause several problems with the eye and surrounding skin that may have long term effects. Inflammation and scarring of the cornea, along with conjunctivitis (inflammation of the conjunctiva) and iritis (inflammation of the iris) are typical problems. Shingles manifests as a vesicular rash, usually in a single dermatome. Development of the rash may be preceded by paresthesias or pain along the involved dermatome. Ocular involvement and zoster keratitis may result if reactivation occurs along the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve. A pproximately 95% of adults in the United States have antibodies to the varicella-zoster virus. Approximately 80% of cases occur in persons older than 20 years. Shingles may be associated with a secondary bacterial infection (typically streptococcal or staphylococcal) of the vesicular rash. Shingles may be complicated by a condition known as post-herpetic neuralgia. Shingles causes a wide range of problems affecting the skin and the eye. Shingles involving the second branch of the trigeminal nerve may be associated with conjunctivitis, keratitis, corneal ulceration, iridocyclitis, glaucoma, and blindness. Shingles is treated with anti-viral, pain and anti-inflammatory medications. Eye drops and ointments may be prescribed to treat ocular problems. Cimetidine, a common component of over-the-counter heartburn medication. Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, may occasionally be used to reduce inflammation and risk of post-herpetic neuralgia.

Treatment with famciclovir (Famvir) may significantly reduce pain and hasten recovery from an acute attack. Topical creams containing capsaicin may provide some relief from pain. Cover shingles lesions with a clean cloth or loose-fitting gauze after cleansing. Avoid contact with the skin lesions of persons with known herpes zoster infection. Cool wet compresses can be used to reduce pain. Soothing baths and lotions, such as colloidal oatmeal bath, starch baths, or lotions and calamine lotion, may help to relieve itching and discomfort. Trim fingernails to reduce the chance of bacterial infection from scratching. Avoid wearing tight clothing over the rash because this could irritate the rash. Avoid exposure to warm and hot water because this could lead to further itching.

Shingles Treatment and Prevention Tips

1. Antidepressant medicines, such as a tricyclic antidepressant.

2. Topical anesthetics, such as lidocaine patches, to numb the area.

3. Anticonvulsant medicines, such as gabapentin or pregabalin.

4. Calamine lotion may help to soothe the rash.

5. Capsaicin is also growing in popularity as a pain treatment

6. Apply cool compresses over the zoster lesions or take a cool bath twice a day.

7. Avoid exposure to warm and hot water because this could lead to further itching.

8. Cover shingles lesions with a clean cloth or loose-fitting gauze after cleansing.

9. Trim fingernails to reduce the chance of bacterial infection from scratching.

10. Avoid wearing tight clothing over the rash because this could irritate the rash.

Finger, Hand and Wrist Exercises

Most hand and wrist injuries happen during the course of a fall. We reach out to stop ourselves from falling by instinct. Sometimes wrist, finger and hand injuries can occur. You can strengthen your hands, wrists and fingers to help prevent injury or speed recovery from an injury. If you have suffered an injury, see your doctor and talk to him or her about some gentle exercises. Start with simple exercises and progress slowly to avoid exacerbating a finger, hand or wrist injury. If you haven’t injured yourself, regular exercise should help to increase flexibility and strength to reduce the chances of an injury.

To increase wrist flexibility, begin with the prayer stretch exercise. Stand up straight and press your palms together in front of your chest. Keep your fingers close together. Slowly lower your hands until you feel the muscles and tendons in your wrist begin to stretch. Don’t force your hands down and stop if you feel pain. You should feel a gentle tugging pressure. Hold this position for up to 5 seconds and then relax. As your strength and flexibility increases, add to the length of time you hold the position.

Flexing and extending your wrist is one of the best ways to increase the up and down range of motion in the wrist. Rest your arm on a table beside a chair and allow your hand to hang over the edge of the table. Bend your wrist down toward the floor until you feel the muscles and tendons begin to stretch. Hold the position for 5 seconds and then raise your hand straight up toward the ceiling until you feel the stretch and hold this position for 5 seconds. Keep your fingers close together during this exercise. Repeat this exercise with the other hand.

Increase side-to-side range of motion rotating the wrist left and right. Sit up straight in a chair and allow your arm to hang over the arm of the chair or rest your forearm on a table with your arm hanging off the side. Turn your hand at the wrist to the left until you feel the muscles pulling slightly. Hold the position for 5 seconds and then turn your wrist to the right and hold it for 5 seconds. Gradually increase the range of motion and time you hold the exercise position as your flexibility increases.

Don’t forget to exercise your fingers. People who do a lot of typing like data entry clerks and writers often experience sore, stiff and tired fingers. Perform finger exercises anytime your fingers begin to feel tired or tight. Sit up straight in your chair. Hold your hands straight out in front of you, but do not lock your elbows. Open your hand and spread your fingers as far apart as possible for at least 5 seconds. Next, close your fingers into a tight fist and hold for 5 seconds.

Music Therapy Can Help Manage Depression in Teens and Children: Study

It is said that music has a universal language which knows no barriers. Music is also divine and has the ability to heal. Listening to music can be soothing and it caresses the bruised soul. Now, a team of researchers from the Bournemouth University, Poole in England and the Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland have found that music therapy also has the power to minimize depression in children and teens with behavioral and emotional problems.

The researchers, in partnership with Every Day Harmony, which is the brand name for Northern Ireland Music Therapy Trust, found that children and teens, aged eight to 16-year-olds, who underwent music therapy showed better self-esteem with a significant dip in depression compared to those who received treatment devoid of music therapy.

The researchers chose 251 children for their study, which took place between March 2011 and May 2014. Two groups were formed, of which 128 received the usual care options and the rest 123 were given therapy sessions, along with the conventional usual care. All the children were being treated for emotional, developmental and behavioral problems.

Music also helped improve communicative and interactive skills

Young people aged 13 and over who received music therapy showed great improvement in their communicative and interactive skills, the study found. Those who didn’t receive any music therapy but only the usual care, didn’t exhibit these improvements. Not only this, music therapy also helped improve social functioning over time in all age groups.

“This study is hugely significant in terms of determining effective treatments for children and young people with behavioral problems and mental health needs,” said lead author of the study Professor Sam Porter of the Department of Social Sciences and Social Work at Bournemouth University.

“The findings contained in our report should be considered by healthcare providers and commissioners when making decisions about the sort of care for young people that they wish to support,” Porter said.

The findings brought forth the importance of music therapy. The researchers emphasized that it should be included as a mainstream treatment option. They also believed that these recent findings score above earlier findings based on anecdotal evidence and small-scale research as to how well it works.

“Now we have robust clinical evidence to show its beneficial effects. I would like to record my gratefulness to the Big Lottery Fund for its vision in providing the resources for this research to be carried out,” said Ciara Reilly, chief executive of Every Day Harmony, the music therapy charity which partnered in the study.

“Music therapy has often been used with children and young people with particular mental health needs, but this is the first time its effectiveness has been shown by a definitive randomized controlled trail in a clinical setting,” said Reilly.

Speaking about the importance of the study, Dr. Valerie Holmes from the Centre for Public Health, School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences, Queen’s University Belfast and co-researcher, said, “This is the largest study ever to be carried out looking at music therapy’s ability to help this very vulnerable group.”

Recovery road map for depression

Depression is often overlooked and is not accorded the importance given to various other serious mental disorders. However, it is a serious psychological disorder and when neglected, symptoms can only get worse. There are some credible treatment centers where depression is treated comprehensively offering long-term recovery to patients.

Signs of Nerve Damage in Hand

Here’s an interesting case I handled recently: It involved a young man who put his arm through a window. He was taken to the emergency room where he was bleeding profusely from cutting an artery. He had a “pumper,” with blood spurting and pulsating out like a garden hose.

Neuropathy in your limbs, especially in your feet, can have serious consequences. Naturally lack of feeling in your feet, means you can’t feel pain. Blisters or cuts then go unnoticed and become infected, and due to poor circulation your blood has difficulty bringing healing antibodies and white blood cells to help heal the infection.

An unusual condition, entrapment of the ulnar nerve at the wrist, is usually the result of a space-occupying lesion such as a ganglion cyst, a lipoma, or ulnar artery aneurism. Repetitive trauma, such as operating a jackhammer, sometimes causes this condition. Nerve compression is more common in people with arthritis, alcoholism, diabetes, and/or thyroid problems.

As more and more people are getting into bodybuilding, and the levels of quality bodybuilding physique continue to rise, a new epidemic is beginning to become prevalent: Nerve injuries. Advanced training techniques, heavier poundages, and chemical advances also lead to higher instances.

Diabetic Neuropathy is nerve damage caused by poor blood circulation that is a consequence of diabetes. This means that any nerve within the body can be damaged and lead to a malfunction of that nerve or group of nerves. As nerves and the nervous system control and regulate many of the bodies vital organs.

These symptoms may be only temporary in the beginning and ease up only to reoccur a short time later. This is caused by an inflammation in the tissues of the wrist that press down on the median nerve which can also cause individuals to experience pain in the wrist and hand as well as the numbness in the fingers.

A trapped nerve originating from the spine can cause referred pain to areas such as your arms, hand, legs and feet. For instance, sciatica can be a result of a pinched nerve due to a disc herniation in your spine. In other instances, a trapped nerve along the sacral plexus (group of nerve fibers that exit the sacral bone) can also cause sciatic pain.

Complications of diabetes include heart disease, high blood pressure, vascular disease, kidney failure, nerve damage (neuropathy), eye problems (retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma, blindness), recurring infections, wounds that won’t heal or are very slow to heal, and stress due to the disease. Amputations of feet and legs are more common in diabetics.

The wrist and hand are capable of power and precision. As a result, pain and swelling are often accompanied by weakness of grip in hand disorders. A careful history and a complete physical examination are important. The presence of symptoms elsewhere in the body is important to establish.

Since the body is pulling more water to dilute the blood sugar, you are likely to find yourself dehydrated and need to drink more water. If you are thirsty and don’t see yourself going to the bathroom often, the body is holding on to the water out of being dehydrated.

Among many warning signs of diabetes excessive discharge of urine is one. This is because of the kidneys being over loaded with more of glucose than actually they can contain in volume. This is again due to the inability of the kidneys to process the glucose for conversion to energy using insulin.

The most common warning sign of diabetes is frequent urination. The kidneys become loaded with glucose due to the cells inability to use it and they try to flush it out by drawing fluids from the body. This leads to the second sign of diabetes.

World Elders Day – The Change Has to Start at Your Home

Nowadays we have different days dedicated for every one and everything in our lives! We have Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Elders Day and even a day for cheesecakes! Strange! Superficially it is a bit weird to celebrate these days in a year but take a closer look. These days can be good reasons to smile, share and enjoy. But is that all? Or do these days convey a deeper significance? I believe so. Let us see an example.

The World Elders Day is celebrated in India on October 1 every year. Traditionally, this day is held to honor the elders, give gifts, talk and spend quality time with them. In a nutshell, do everything to make them feel happy! But hey! Think again! Shouldn’t we be doing this to our elders all through their lifetimes? Well, that’s the whole point! It is like eating, and earning money! The only requirement is our willingness.

Why World Elders Day?

Let us put into perspective the need for a separate day like World Elders Day. There is one simple reason: if you are one of those few already taking good care of your elders at home then this day could be spent to reiterate your pledge to continue to do your best, or probably look back to check if you have done enough or make amends. And if you are one of those looking for some reason to start, then this day could be the day!

To begin with, do we celebrate World Elders Day at our homes?

The World Elders Day has a dubious distinction! Today, it is nothing but sheer pain to see that this Day which ought to have been celebrated inside our homes with our elders is celebrated more outside in old age and destitute homes. The reason: today there is an increasing impatience among young men and women and this has forced many elders, willingly or unwillingly, to move into homes for the aged. Frankly speaking either way we are committing the heinous crime of forcing out someone who spent his entire lifetime for us. It may sound cliched yet it is a fact.

Where are we going wrong?

All of us know that we will be elders one day and join the ever increasing percentage of elderly citizens in the world’s population! And yet some of us continue to show gross indifference and disrespect to our elders in our own families and in the society! Each of us might have countless reasons, logics and excuses for this transgression but I guess this could be due to a combination of many problems. Let us try to put into a right perspective these various problems and what we could do to keep our elders happy.

Psychiatrists believe that fulfilling the physical, psychological and emotional needs of elders is the key to keep them healthy and happy. Intentional or unintentional neglect, impudence and maltreatment inside the families and in the society often lead to high levels of stress among elders. This in turn could lead to various physical ailments, psychological and emotional disorders and even cause death in some cases.

Experts say that elders are like children. Just like little babies, the moods of the elders swing, sometimes too quickly not allowing us enough time to grasp. But with a little effort and time we can make a difference! Again, willingness holds the key. Elders need attention at homes and if we don’t give it, they start demanding it. When the elders begin to feel they are neglected, they adopt ways to attract this attention from us which may be totally or partially raw, and at times irritating. Mental agitation, restlessness, falling sick often, nausea, vomiting and even suicide attempts could be just reactions to this neglect by family members. Immediate medical care, physical and psychological alone may not be enough. It is better to pause and ask us this question: What did I do to be here? Most often the answer will be neglect, intentional or unintentional. Remember, elders need attention.

What is ‘attention’?

Attention to our elders does not mean providing only basic amenities like a place to stay, food to eat, some money and new clothes during occasions. Most of us pat ourselves for providing these to our elders at home and expect them to appreciate it and if not at least stop complaining and save us the embarrassment! Unfortunately, we fail to fulfil their most logical and humane expectation of spending quality time with them. It doesn’t mean that we spend hours together with them; it only means that we find a few minutes of quality time for a heart-to-heart talk with them. In some cases, as psychiatrists point out, even certain things done inadvertently could strain relationships.

As suggested, spend a few minutes daily to talk to them. Do not take them for granted. Find out their interests, their requirements, and their concerns. Show respect to their feelings and consult them on important issues. Make them feel important. It is the only viable solution. It is an unassailable fact that we will also face aging! One day we will be elders too. Let us put ourselves into their shoes and ask us this: Will I be truly happy if my son or daughter provides only amenities but avoid talking to me?

Remember, by helping our elders stay physically fit and mentally happy, we are only helping ourselves and our future. Psychiatrists claim that our children who constantly witness how we treat our parents tend to repeat it when we get older. If we fail to give proper care and respect to our elders at home now we will get the same ugly treatment from our children later on in our lives!

Government too has a role to play in keeping elders happy

During the World Elders Day celebrations, the elders take to the roads to highlight their problems and submit petitions to the authorities concerned for alleviation of their difficulties. The Government too is duty bound to fulfill the logical demands of the elders in the society.

Take for instance the health care and health insurance for senior citizens in India. There is a huge void that needs to be fast filled up as far as the standards of health care and the rising health insurance costs for elders is concerned. Elder abuse is another issue the Government should take care. Elder abuse can take many forms and could even prove fatal. It is high time the Government of India speed up the effective implementation of the comprehensive policy for older persons it announced in 1999 to help and support older persons in India.

As always said, everyone has to face aging. One day you will be an elder too and you wouldn’t want your son or daughter to ignore you! Would you? Let us pledge to make a difference on the World Elders Day on October 1. Let us work towards bringing the much needed change, right at your home, right now.

Finally A Natural Cure For Your Puppy’s Diarrhea

I can only guess that the last time your pup had diarrhea, you hoped it would be the last right? Not only can it be extremely messy, but it can be very expensive. Most pet owners will bring their dogs to the vet or canine ER, at the first sign of diarrhea. Most of the times, your pet’s upset stomach is generally due to a change in diet or perhaps some tasty garbage he found outside.

The tip to your dog’s diarrhea is to catch it as soon as possible. The earlier you detect it, the quicker you can fix it. Plus your carpet cleaning bill may not be as high! I always try to focus on natural remedies as you never know when you may need something. Sometimes your vet may be closed and you simply can not get the medicine you need, and that is where holistic remedies come into play. Many of the ingredients can be found at your local supermarket or drug store. Although this is a natural remedy if you happen to notice blood in your dog’s diarrhea or vomiting in conjunction with the diarrhea, please visit the vet or ER as quickly as possible.

Here are two very simple tips to help with your dog’s diarrhea.

Sweet Potatoes

You may have heard in the past to give your pup boiled chicken and rice, and this is a fine solution to an upset stomach. Although I have found it is not as effective for diarrhea and can become rather costly. So a better solution is to give your pup boiled, baked or even steamed sweet potatoes. Believe it or not your dog will love these and so will his stomach. Research has shown that the phytonutrients in sweet potatoes has a anti-inflammatory effect on the digestive tract. Not only is this going to be a great natural remedy it is also very inexpensive.

Po Chai

The next remedy can be found in many health food shops as well as online and is called Po Chai. You will swear this is a miracle drug for your dog’s diarrhea. Po Chai will go to work on your dog’s intestines and “miraculously” corrects any imbalance. Po Chai is available in tiny pills that come in 10 vials per box. For a dog up to 25 pounds give 1 1/2 vials three times a day. For medium and large sized dogs it is OK to give your dog one vial three times a day. You can expect to see results after you administer the first vial. Generally you will only need to treat for just one day.

Lynch Syndrome – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods

Lynch syndrome is a rare disorder. The condition is named after Henry Lynch, a doctor and authority on inherited cancers. The estimated proportion of all CRCs that are caused by Lynch syndrome depends on how this syndrome is defined, with traditional definitions being based on family history and age of onset. It is also known as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer syndrome(HNPCC). It is caused by mutations or alterations of particular genes. Lynch syndrome strongly predisposes people who have this inherited defect to develop colorectal cancer as well as several other types of cancer. The genes associated with HNPCC can sometimes cause other cancers, such as stomach, ovary, endometrium (the lining of the womb) and kidney. HNPCC is an inherited cause of cancer of the bowel. The HNPCC syndrome is due to mutation in a gene in the DNA mismatch repair system, usually the MLH1 or MSH2 gene or less often the MSH6 or PMS2 genes. The syndrome is classified as Type I in the absence of extracolonic cancers and Type II if these are present. However, sarcomas have rarely been described in these families. The cancers of the colorectal area associated with the Lynch Syndromes usually develop at a younger age than is normally found in other persons with colorectal cancer.

The syndrome is neither common nor rare, occurring in one or two of every 1,000 people. Women with HNPCC have a 20-60% lifetime risk of endometrial cancer. In HNPCC, the gastric cancer is usually intestinal-type adenocarcinoma. Other HNPCC-related cancers have characteristic features: the urinary tract cancers are transitional carcinoma of the ureter and renal pelvis; the small bowel cancer is most common in the duodenum and jejunum; and the most common type of brain tumor is glioblastoma. When colorectal cancer is associated with Lynch syndrome, it tends to occur at a younger age than in most other colorectal cancer cases. Colorectal cancer associated with Lynch syndrome tends to occur in people at a younger age than for people with the more common nonhereditary forms of colorectal cancer. Family history can provide important clues to the presence of the Lynch syndrome. Different segments of the DNA strands contain genes responsible for different structures and functions in the body. For example, certain segments of DNA carry genes that determine one’s eye color, hair color, height, and other physical characteristics. Other DNA segments of DNA carry genes that regulate the duplication and the rate of growth of cells.

Causes of Lynch syndrome

The common causes and risk factor’s of Lynch syndrome include the following:

Lynch syndrome is caused by mutations or alterations of particular genes.

Age is the primary risk factor.

If you have a family history of Lynch syndrome, you’re at much greater risk of inheriting this condition yourself.

Daily alcohol use (may double the risk).

Eating a high-fat, low-fiber diet.

Genetic disorders such as familial polyposis syndromes and hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer syndrome (HNPCC).

Not having periods, or not having them often.

Smoking is also a risk factor for Lynch syndrome.

Symptoms of Lynch syndrome

Some sign and symptoms related to Lynch syndrome are as follows:

Changes in bowel habits- for example, constipation or diarrhea that persists for longer than several days.

Change in appetite.

Abdominal pain and even an abdominal mass.

Feelings of fatigue or weakness.

Black, tarry stool, which may represent bleeding above the rectum.

Iron deficiency without another identifiable cause.

Rectal bleeding.

Fatigue associated with anemia.

Treatment of Lynch syndrome

Here is list of the methods for treating Lynch Syndrome:

When polyps associated with Lynch syndrome are present, doctors remove them during a colonoscopy.

Chemotherapy, which uses drugs to destroy cancer cells. This approach often follows surgery.

Surgery may also be an option in people who carry the genetic mutation of Lynch syndrome, even if they don’t yet have colorectal cancer.

The standard treatment is to give radiotherapy after surgery to women in certain circumstances.

Most people with Lynch syndrome choose frequent colonoscopies over prophylactic surgery.
