Overactive Immune System and How to Balance It

The immune system is designed to protect the body against bacteria, viruses, parasites etc. However, although it usually prevents disease, sometimes it can cause it. This article explores what we can do to balance it and help it function more effectively.

An overactive immune system can cause several diseases such as allergies, asthma, hay fever and autoimmune disorders, of which there are many. This is characterised by an inflammatory reaction caused by the body’s own immune system attacking itself.

Examples of autoimmune disorders are rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, crohn’s disease, thyroid disorders, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, fibromyalgia and inflammatory bowel disease.

Autoimmune disorders are the fourth leading cause of disability in women and about 75% of cases occur in women.

Various possible causes of autoimmune disorders have been postulated and amongst these are stress and diet.

Whilst these chronic conditions will often need medical intervention in the form of ant-inflammatory and steroidal drugs, an individual can also help to regulate her (or his) own immune system by following eight recognised guidelines for good health, namely:

Eating a well-balanced diet. A diet high in fruits and vegetables has many of the phytonutrients critical to enhance the immune system as well as many of the important vitamins and minerals. A steady and balanced intake of essential vitamins and mineral helps to keep our immune systems working properly by providing us with protection from infections and disease. Fish, poultry, lean meat, low-fat dairy products, cereals and legumes (peas, lentils, beans) are all good sources of minerals. Foods such as cheese, eggs or liver, which supply vitamin A, and spinach, sweet potatoes or carrots, which are good sources of beta carotene, should also be eaten daily. Try to ensure that fruit and vegetables in particular are consumed as soon as possible after picking. Research has shown that they start to lose their vitamin content very quickly, and if left too long will have no nutritional value at all. Cooking for too long will also diminish their nutritional content.

Getting plenty of rest to recharge and restore the body and refresh the mind.

Exercising regularly. A low to high intensity workout for 25 to 30 minutes on most days of the week is recommended to build a strong immune system. This does not necessarily mean a trip to the gym. Brisk walking can also be beneficial.

Drinking plenty of water, 6-8 glasses per day, to stay well hydrated and to flush away waste. Water can also act as a lubricant around joints and protect sensitive tissues and organs.

Cutting down on or eliminating alcohol and caffeine which may inhibit the proper functioning of the immune system.

Avoiding the ingestion of pollutants such as cigarette smoke, burnt food, vehicle fumes and other substances and toxins in the environment which can lead to the formation of free radicals in the body, and threaten the effectiveness of the vitamins and minerals in our food.

Eliminating stress. Studies have found that sustained stress lowers the body’s immunity which then leads to illness. A report of 276 volunteers exposed to a common cold virus showed that those who had been under stress for more than a month were most likely to get sick. In another study, children with a history of stress and recurrent colds were found to have lower localized immunity.

Maintaining the body at its optimum weight to give the immune system its best chance of working effectively. In addition, if you are unfortunate enough to have an immune system disorder such as rheumatoid arthritis being overweight puts more strain on already painful joints.

In conclusion, whilst we cannot be sure that we will not suffer from an overactive immune system, there are steps we can take to minimise the effects of autoimmune disorders on our health and lifestyle.

What Is This Blue Lumber?

Sunday night I was sitting around watching the Simpsons, my favorite TV show when I get a call from my dad. He was watching that show Extreme Home Makeover and he notice that they where building the house out of blue lumber. He asked me “Why is this lumber blue?” Confused, I was like “blue lumber?” I asked him did it look blue or was it blue, and he told me it was BLUE, the whole house. Not knowing what he was talking about I did some research, on this blue wood he was talking about, and came across some interesting facts on it.

For Starters the wood is actually called Bluwood. Bluwood is a two part, preconstruction wood protection system. The lumber has a film on it that helps prevent moister from seaping into the wood and also protects against fungus and wood eating insects.

Any lumber can be treated. The film can be applied to any type of lumber from a 2×4 to OSB (Oriented strand board). That means sub floor, trusses and even beams can have this film put on it. It comes to the job site pre treated and can be sawed, nailed, and painted. Since the wood is pretreated it also protects the lumber while it sites outside in the elements while the house is being built unprotected (up to 6 months).

Termites. This lumber uses an Insecticidal and a fungicidal that prevents termites and fungus from attacking the wood and destroying is structural properties. The film attaches to the fibers that the termites like to eat, thus preventing them from eating it.

The system. The first part of the two part system is the vapor barrier. The wood is engulfed in a film that creates a vapor barrier on the wood. This vapor barrier controls the absorption properties of the wood not allowing the it to absorb moisture, but I also allows the wood to breath, letting the moister within it escape. Kind of like a Tyvek Home Wrap. The second part of the system is a proven DOT insecticide and fungicide.

How it works. The two part system is applied to all six sides of the lumber which they call the infusion process. Once the infusion process is over this prevents any moister from absorbing into the wood but allowing moister to escape from the wood. Then over time the “infusion ingredients” continue to migrate below the surface of the wood so in theory the inside of the wood is treated. I never used the wood so I don’t really know. I guess that when you cut the wood it is still protected. Through this process the ingredients bind to the wood at a cellular level

Less cupping splitting and curling. Since the wood has this vapor barrier on it, the film controls the rate at which the moister in the wood escapes. Preventing the wood from cupping, splitting, and/or curling, which we find more often today then before because of the quick milling process. So no more going to a large home improvement store and shifting through a stack of 2×4s to find the 2 that you need that are straight.

Four Major Side Effects of Royal Jelly Are Enumerated Below

Royal jelly is a natural cure recommended by medical doctors and holistic practitioners. There are claims that it could cure, soothe pain, strengthen body immunity and fade skin blemishes. Alternatively called bee’s milk, royal jelly is a nutritious white substance that has power to reverse symptoms of many diseases and body disorders. It is thought to be the best natural solution for sufferers of high cholesterol, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, infertility, impotence, low libido, sinuses, migraines, bone diseases and so on. Because of all these health benefits, one may be tempted to think that bee’s milk is completely harmless. Royal jelly’s activities in the body are possible because of how it interacts with your hormones, blood platelets, cholesterol and other enzymes. As a result of these interactions, there is a possibility that mild or severe negative side effects could occur. Four possible side effects of royal jelly are enumerated below.

Hypersensitivity – This is among the leading side effects of bee’s milk. More often than not, people who have honey and bee pollen allergies also find out that they have royal jelly’s allergy. If you already know that you are one of these people, it would be wise to avoid this precious milk. Commonly reported allergic reactions include asthma, gastro intestinal pains, bleeding of the intestines and anaphylactic shock (a fatal shock). This is according to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Even if you can take bee products safely, perhaps you are allergic to conifer trees. If you do have a conifer trees’ allergy, take royal jelly capsules, fresh frozen liquid or powder with care.

Irritations on Skin – There are bee’s milk creams and lotions meant for healing, repairing and beautifying your skin. Some people have suffered mild to severe irritations because of applying these beauty products to the skin. Commonly, some people develop facial rashes despite not being allergic to any bee product. So you want to use these items with enough caution.

Breast Cancer cell growth – According to researchers, when royal jelly is consumed, it produces estrogen-like signals because of acting directly on estrogen receptors. It could therefore potentially arouse cancer cell multiplication in women who have breast cancer. Prior to buying this product, consult your doctor.

Drug interactions – Bee’s milk is known to react badly with blood thinners (anticoagulants). These are prescribed drugs that are commonly used to reduce the amount of bad cholesterol in the blood. Coumadin or Warfarin should specifically not be combined with this product of the bees. It could result to horrible intestinal bleeding that could cause death.

The above are four main side effects of bee’s milk. They are the most popularly reported negative effects. If you have breast cancer or are taking anticoagulants, consult a physician before taking this holistic milk. While many pregnant and breast-feeding mothers are able to use this gooey substance harmlessly, you should not assume you are like them. Have a doctor examine before trying royal jelly’s holistic healing. This is so because every pregnancy is different. Even if you have used royal jelly before, while pregnant, ask your doctor if your current pregnancy is risky or safe.

IBS Treatment – The Magic Of Cumin To Treat Bloating And Constipation

One of the major symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the gas buildup in the stomach. The gas, if not relieved, will cause cramping, colon spasm and major discomfort. Sometimes this can be so severe, that the IBS sufferer has to be confined to bed rest. Cumin – a common Indian herb may be the answer to removing the gas buildup. This is a natural method that provides a safe and easy approach to eliminating the gas build up in the stomach.

Cumin’s properties are stomachic, diuretic, carminative, stimulant and antispasmodic. It is valuable in dyspepsia diarrhea and hoarseness, and it is known to relieve flatulence and colic. Cumin is a stimulating medicinal herb and it contains compounds that fight inflammation, pain and swelling.

To make a tea with cumin, it is best to have the seeds that have been harvested from home-grown plants, like everything else. You can find cumin seeds in health food stores. To make a tea with cumin steep one teaspoon of dried and gently crushed cumin seeds in one cup of boiling water. Let the cumin seeds steep in the water for ten to twenty minutes.

After the gently crushed cumin seeds have been steeped for ten to twenty minutes, you should strain out the cumin seeds and drink the cumin tea. Drink one or two cups of the cumin tea a day to help relieve the swelling and inflammation. Sip the liquid while it is hot. Drink after a meal.

Cumin is believed to aid in the absorption of iron. If you have an iron deficiency you may want to try some cumin tea. So this is also good for women who are menstruating. Iron helps build blood cells.

Cumin is also good if you have indigestion or gas. If you are having trouble with indigestion or gas you may want to try some cumin tea to help relieve the indigestion or gas. This is what IBS sufferers know.

Other uses of Cumin:

  • Roasted cumin seeds can also freshen the breath.
Chewing roasted cumin seeds can also heal soars in the mouth and reduce excess saliva.
  • Cumin tea cures problems in the urinary tract, cleans the bladder and kidneys.
  • Combined with fenugreek, they help to keep the prostate healthy and reduce problems in the male and female reproductive organs and urinary systems.
  • A teaspoon of cumin boiled in water reduces pain in the body and acts as a natural sleep aid for those who have difficulty falling asleep.
  • Cumin tea can be drunk to reduce the symptoms of common cold and sore throat.
  • Cumin helps to remove excess phlegm and is thus good taken during allergy season or at the onset of a cold.

The main benefit of cumin as an IBS treatment is that it helps to regulate bowel function and can help to stop diarrhea by eating it with a bit of sugar candy. Cumin and fennel combined in equal parts and chewed or boiled as a tea help to promote digestion. Combined with turmeric and peppercorn it becomes a very good digestive aid and immune booster. Cumin can be chewed after a meal to promote digestion and reduce stomachache.

Toenail Fungus – What You Can Do

Over six million Americans have toenail fungus. The medical term for toenail fungus is “onychomycosis,” pronounced on * EE * ko * my * KO * sis. “Onycho” means pertaining to the nails and “mycosis” refers to a disease caused by a fungus. The fungus causes the nails to become thickened and yellow. Sometimes they appear white and splotchy, and sometimes yellowish-brown. The nails can curve in at the sides and thicken substantially at the center. Many times the nails can be uncomfortable, cause pain or result in ingrown toenails. Diabetics, and those with depressed immune systems, have a higher risk of developing toenail fungus. Others with an increased risk of developing toenail fungus are the elderly, athletes and individuals with sweaty feet. The risk of developing toenail fungus increases with age. Athletes have a higher risk because of more wear in occlusive shoes combined with repeated nail trauma. This is especially true for hikers, runners, backpackers, soccer, basketball and tennis players. Fungus likes to grow in moist, warm areas. This increases the chance of infection for those with excess sweating of their feet, also known as hyperhidrosis.

There are a number of treatments for onychomycosis. Unfortunately, many are not very effective. The most aggressive and effective way to treat the fungus is with oral anti-fungal medications. The most common oral anti-fungal medications are Itraconazole (Sporonox ®) and Terbinafine (Lamisil ®). Both medications are expensive and insurance companies tend to consider onychomycosis a cosmetic problem. If you are diabetic, your insurance company may consider onychomycosis a medical problem, and will cover the treatment. If you are experiencing pain or have developed ingrown toenails as a result, then your insurance company may cover treatment. The medication needs to be taken once daily for 3 months. The effectiveness of the medications ranges from 60 to 80%, with a recurrence rate of about 10-15%. Complete cure rates have been reported as low as 28%. Lamisil® appears to be more effective and has fewer drug interactions than Sporonox®.

With both medications, there is a long list of benign side effects including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, rash, headache, taste disturbances and dizziness. A recent study published in the American Journal of Geriatric Pharmacotherapy found the most common side effects with three months of Lamisil®, tin individuals over 65 years of age, were nausea, sinusitis, joint pain and high cholesterol. Serious problems can develop, which is why many doctors will recommend other therapies first. The problems are rare and occur less then 0.5% of the time, but include serious liver diseases like hepatitis and acute hepatic necrosis.

Topical Therapy

Topical therapies are much safer, but also much less effective and sometimes quite expensive. Popular prescription topicals include Ciclopirox laquer (Penlac ®), Carmol® 40 and Keralac® Nail Gel. Don’t expect miracles from these medications, but they can help decrease discoloration and thickness, prevent progression and are a great adjunct therapy.

Over The Counter and Home Remedies

There are many OTC (Over The Counter) products which can be purchased online or at the drug store. A few include Tineacide®, which combines lavender oil and tea tree oil, Lamisil® topical nail treatment, Dr. Scholl’s® Nail Management Kit, and Restore® which is, in my opinion, one of the best medications you can purchase over the counter. Some home remedies that can be used include melaleuca oil (tea tree oil), bleach, grapeseed extract, and Vics VapoRub®. I have had many patients claim complete cures with Vics VapoRub®, popularized by Dr. Gott, but I have yet to see any complete cures with Vics treatment. Vics tends to decrease the thickness of the nails and will sometimes contribute to peeling off of layers of the nail. Most topicals, prescription medications, OTCs and home remedies, tend to have similar effectiveness. One key is to purchase a product that is a gel, solution, laquer or spray. Creams tend to not be as effective. Roughen up the nail surface with a file before application for better penetration. Use treatment daily and plan on going through therapy for 6-8 months. Make sure you take steps to prevent the fungus from worsening, spreading and re-infecting. Follow these steps:

1. Place an anti-fungal powder or spray in the shoes every other day.

2. Make sure you rotate your shoes often and keep them in a cool dry place. Use a shoe dryer in the winter if necessary.

3. Change your insoles frequently, and make sure they dry out between use.

4. Try using an antiperspirant spray on your feet before your workout, if your feet sweat excessively.

5. Wash your shower mat regularly in hot water, or step out of the shower, onto a towel, which is washed after each use.

6. Bleach out the shower on a weekly basis.Bleach works better than antimicrobial cleaners.

7. Make sure your shoes fit well.Ill-fitting shoes can lead to jamming at the toes. Jamming at the toes leads to microtrauma at the nails and increases the chance for fungal infection.

8. If you belong to a gym or health club, wear sandals  in the locker room and don’t walk around barefoot. Don’t keep your shoes in the gym locker where they cannot dry out.

9. Ladies, avoid wearing toenail polish.Toenail polish can increases chances of and/or worsen a fungal infection. If you can’t bear to go without polish, keep them painted for only 3-4 days, remove all polish and then go without polish for 2-3 days. Repeat this cycle through the summer.

10. Cut your toenails straight across. Cutting too short can cause breaks in the skin. This will increase the chance for fungal infection. Don’t let the toenails grow too long or they will jam against the shoe and cause bleeding under the nail, again increasing the chance for fungal infection.

The Bottom Line

Toenail fungus is very difficult to treat. If you have fungal toenails that cause pressure, pain or infection, consider talking to your doctor about prescription medications or nail removal. Make sure you take precautions to prevent re-infection and take multiple approaches to eradicate the problem. If your fungal toenails are only unsightly and don’t cause any discomfort, try a weekly application of an over the counter topical along with methods to prevent re-infection.

C-Section Scar – How to Fix or Remove Your Tummy Scar

Many women who have had children by Cesarean have difficulty with their C-section scar after they are no longer having children. Although a Transverse incision, easier to hide, is most commonly used, many patients have had a Vertical incision which is very visible in a Bikini.

Many patients complain of the following problems including:

Pain-Pain is more common early after surgery. The incision line can become raised, red, itchy and painful. These signs usually start at about 6 weeks after delivery.

Tethered or Tight Scar-Longer term the incision site can become tight and depressed as the tissues become adherent to the underlying muscle fascia of the abdominal wall.

A depression in the skin-the incision line can become depressed and if normal fat around the area has been damaged a divot can form deep in the area of the incision which is visible in clothing.

A pouch or fold of skin on the lower abdomen-Many patients complain that they have a pouch or loose skin fold in their lower tummy after C – section. This is a fold of skin which forms above the transverse incision and is caused by wound contraction. It is called a “trap door” deformity and many patients complain that the tummy pouch or fold can be seen through clothing.

Options for Improving C-section Scars

Steroid Injection – A painful red raised incision can often be treated with injections of a Corticosteroid solution. Typically 2-3 injections 6 weeks apart are required to reduce the size and redness of the incision line. Long term these injections can cause problems such as Fat Atrophy-the scar becomes depressed. In addition the growth of visible blood vessels on the skin can occur. For this reason we are now using Laser Treatments or IPL Treatments.

IPL-Intense Pulsed Light- IPL is a light treatment similar to a Laser. IPL is an effective treatment for a red incision. The earlier treatment is started the more effective IPL will be. We can treat red incisions as early as 3-4 weeks and usually 3-4 treatments 6 weeks apart are required.

1540 Non ablative Fractional Laser– The 1540 Non ablative Fractional Erbium Laser is effective at smoothing raised or lumpy C-section scars. This is a very new modern treatment that we use frequently. 3-4 sessions 6 weeks apart are usually required.

Surgical Revision-Simple excision of the old incision line with careful Plastic Surgical Closure can be very effective for many patients.

Mini Tummy Tuck or Bikini Tuck-Many patients have excess loose skin on the lower abdomen after pregnancy that they cannot tighten no matter how hard they exercise or how long they diet. Patients who have C-section scars usually also complain of a lump or pouch in the lower abdomen that is very distressing, shows through clothing and will not go away with exercise and massage. For these patients a Mini Tummy Tuck or Bikini Tummy Tuck has the benefit of both tightening the tummy and correcting the pouch or lump.

Surgical Revision with Laser Assisted Liposuction– Depressed Vertical C-section scars are often adherent to the underlying muscle fascia and the surrounding fat has been damaged. In these cases, a simple excision and closure results in the area becoming depressed again after revision surgery. One solution is to excise the depressed area and use Laser Assisted Liposuction to reduce excess fat on either side of the C-section scar and break up the adherent tissue before closing the wound.

If you are considering treatment for your C-section scar be sure to discuss it with your Obstetrcian. If you plan to have surgery consult a Plastic Surgeon Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

How to Make Saggy Breasts Fuller: Stop the Saggy and Get Perky and Full Breasts

Sagging is an inevitable process that happens to women’s at some stage. Main cause of sagging is gravity, gravity pulls down the breast and ligaments in skin stretch makes the boobs to droop. The drooping of boobs depends upon elasticity of skin. Different women have different skin elasticity so have different type of drooping. Second cause is breast involution, in this process the milk making system inside the breasts shrinks and not remain active at some stage, the woman’s who never breast feeds their child will have the maximum drooping effect. Drooping effect can be minimized by certain procedures that we will discuss in this article.

Wear supportive bra: bra maintains the drooping breasts. So a woman should wear bra to avoid sagging. The main reason of wearing bra is those bra straps covers the breast and keep them in place so that ligaments present would not be able to do anything like stretching because ligaments become active when breast are in motion. A sportswoman should always wear a bra to avoid sagging because in sport upper portion of woman are in vibrant motion. Wearing a bra becomes the reason to make your breast firm.

Pushups: this is the misconception in woman’s mind that pushups make their breasts tones like men Pecs. Pushups doesn’t make breast like men chest it will only tighten the boobs and give them shape. So don’t worry about the pushups phobia. If you can’t do that in proper way there is another way of doing the same. Stand against in front of wall approximate 2 feet away. Press the wall with your both hands and then release your all weights on hands slowly and then move towards the wall with all weight of body on your hand and then move backwards. Do this 7 or 8 times.

Weight lifting: weight lifting also avoids drooping. If you have never lifted weight before, then start with the small weights. Most women start weight lifting with 10 lb dumbbells. But she should start with the 5 lb or less and repetition of lifting the dumbbells should be increased. Repetitions are more helpful than increasing weight to prevent shagging.

Bench Press: Bench press is the best exercise to lift your breasts higher. No one other exercise is better than this. Woman can do it on incline, decline or flat benches with dumbbells. Precautions should be take care while doing bench press on decline. There should be support to the legs otherwise you will slip down and the line of dumbbells that you are moving up and down should be matched with you nipples line.

How Severe Toe Nail Fungus Happens

Anyone would cringe at the thought of a severe toe nail fungus. When left untreated, it can cause extreme pain on the foot. Toe nail fungus in its advanced stages is unsightly, too. Not many people would want to be near you if you have it. You should therefore, prefer to avoid it if you can. Here’s what you should know about severe fungal infections on toe nails.

Toe Nail Fungus

It starts as a little dot. After some time, the white dot may grow bigger and may begin to spread. The white color may later make your toe nail look dull. The color could also change to yellow. This is the early stage of toe nail fungus. If you don’t do anything, it can get even worse.

The Color – Severe nail fungus can turn your nail color to black. The edge of your nail could become ragged and the nail surface flaky. Your nail will become thicker and thicker due to dead nail cells piling up. You may begin to experience some slight pain. Your nail may also begin to give off a foul odor.

Making it Worse

Some nail fungus cases don’t become worse. Toe nail fungus can be treated in its initial stages. Sometimes though, we can make toe nail fungus much worse because of our own actions. Some of the temporary solutions that we adopt can actually make the condition worse.

Covering up for example can worsen toe nail fungus. Some people may naturally try to mask their condition. Since toe nail fungus is an ugly and embarrassing sight, they may try to use nail polish, closed shoes or even fake nails to disguise toe nail fungus. All these masking techniques however can do more harm than good. Toe nail fungus loves dark, moist and warm environments. You are providing just that by covering up. Masking your problem can only lead to severe toe nail fungus.

Solution for Severe Cases

Options – The solutions for severe cases aren’t pleasant. If your condition no longer responds to topical applications, you may be prescribed with oral antifungal medication. In some cases, oral medication may result in side effects. The most serious side effect that you can expect would be liver problems caused by prolonged intake of antifungal medication. If medication is not enough, a doctor may have to remove the infected nail.

What You Should Do

Treat it early. You don’t want to end up with a severe nail fungal infection. You should therefore try your best not to get infected. You can do this by keeping your nails clean and trim and by avoiding bare contact with public wet surfaces. You should also be careful with your choice of salon if you are in the habit of getting a pedicure.

Be cautious. You may not be able to avoid nail fungi entirely. If you already have it, make sure you respond early and quickly. Early stages of toe nail fungal infections respond better to treatment in its early stages. Apply a good topical treatment on it as soon as you notice symptoms.

Why Energy Drinks Can Trigger Panic Attacks

Millions of Americans every day including teenagers and adults are getting all hyped up from energy drinks every day. It’s become a fad around the world and its hip and cool to drink energy drinks no matter what time of day. Kids and adults are not only drinking energy drinks for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but they’re also drinking energy drinks at parties as well.

With kids, the higher the concentration of caffeine and other stimulants the more popular these drinks become. Unfortunately a lot of kids don’t realize that it can cause them to have panic attacks. For that matter, a lot of adults don’t know that either. They have no idea why they sometimes feel the way they do after drinking energy drinks.

They can start feeling exceedingly “amped up” with hot flashes that are ripping through their bodies caused by the adrenal gland secreting adrenaline throughout their body. They may start feeling a tightness in their chest and a choking sensation that they cannot breath correctly.

Their heart will begin racing abnormally high and may even skip a beat or two causing more fear to rip through their body and they don’t understand what’s happening to themselves. Panic attacks induced by energy drinks can also cause not only physical symptoms, but psychological symptoms as well. Feelings of unreality or an intense feeling of impending doom or death are quite common with panic attacks.

In fact emergency rooms across the world are flooded every day from people who have panic attacks induced by stimulants found in drinks such as energy drinks as well from certain drugs such as methamphetamines. For some people who drink energy drinks it never affects them, for other people they can be very susceptible and even trigger panic attacks after drinking something that has a high concentration of stimulants in them.

Energy drinks contain very high quantities of not only caffeine but other natural stimulants as well, that are known to cause or trigger panic attacks in children, teenagers, and adults. Energy drinks do not discriminate.

The Importance of Mental Health

What is mental health?

Though no concise definition exists, mental health is basically your attitude and approach to life. Psychological, environmental, genetic, or physiological factors have a profound effect on overall mental development.

What is mental illness?

Mental illness impairs your ability to perform routine tasks, foster healthy relationships, or cope with anger or stress. It may be classified on the basis of extreme mood swings, irrational or destructive thought patterns, and behavioral problems.

How important is mental health?

Your mental health has a huge impact on every aspect of your life.

o Self-image

Good mental health means appreciating your achievements and accepting your shortcomings. A mental illness can cause an inferiority complex, a negative body image, and intense feelings of self-hate, anger, disgust, and uselessness, which could mutate into extreme depression, psycho-social disorders, or eating disorders.

o Education

Students with mental problems socially isolate themselves, and develop anxiety disorders and concentration problems. Good mental health ensures an all-round educational experience that enhances social and intellectual skills that lead to self-confidence and better grades.

o Relationships

Mental health largely contributes to the functioning of human relationships. Mental illness can hamper even basic interactions with family, friends, and colleagues. Most people suffering from mental illness find it difficult to nurture relationships, have problems with commitment or intimacy, and frequently encounter sexual health issues.

o Sleep

An inability to handle stress or anxiety can cause insomnia. Even if you mange to fall asleep, you may wake up a dozen times during the night with thoughts of what went wrong the day before or how bad tomorrow is going to be. You may develop severe sleeping disorders which leave you exhausted and less productive.

o Eating

People with mental disorders are more prone to indulging in comfort eating or emotional binges. Finding comfort in food is something we all do from time to time. But with a mental illness, it becomes difficult to control yourself. Overeating can lead to obesity, which puts you at a risk for heart disease and diabetes, in addition to creating an unhealthy body-image.

o Physical health

Your mental state directly affects your body. For example, stress can lead to hypertension or stomach ulcers. People who are mentally healthy are at a lower risk for many health complications.

So make a conscious effort to improve and maintain your mental health.

Neck Strain

Neck sprain is a stretching or tearing feeling in the tissues of the neck. A neck strain is an injury that can damage the ligaments and muscles that support the neck and head.

Neck Strain

A strain in any part of a body is a stretch or tear of a muscle or tendon. Neck is surrounded by small muscles running close to the vertebrae and larger muscles that make up the visible muscles of the neck.

Neck strain can be caused when neck got unexpected bend, as if you a person is suddenly accelerated forward, then the head has tendency to remain behind and thus neck bends backwards suddenly. Our neck stays in constant tension to hold the head up. If a person having any injury on either neck or head, this may result to strain in neck. Sometime if you keep your neck one side while sleeping this may result to strain in neck. People who work on computer for a long time may suffer from the problem of neck strain.

If a person having strain in neck he/she may experience severe pain in the area around neck. Sometime it may have aching in neck. Even head movements also seems difficult and if one tries to move head side to side this can get pain in the neck. In some cases patient of neck strain may get numbness in fingers and also in forearms. Some other symptoms are blurred vision, swallowing, dizziness, stiffness, noise in ear and also nausea.

Most of the patients of neck strain recover in one-two weeks but in some conditions, it can have long term effects such as long term discomfort, pain and limitation of movements. If a person is facing difficulty by sitting in same position for long time, then you should try to take small gaps between the working schedules. You can wear a soft cervical collar round your neck as it would be helpful in supporting head and also relieve pressure of neck.

What Causes Constipation? – Reasons of Bowel Congestion

The two most important factors that are instrumental in passing stools are peristalsis and the consistency of stools. The pelvic floor muscles should also function normally for an easy passage of stools. These muscles support the rectum and are supposed to relax while the stools are excreted. The abdominal muscles contract at that time to push out the stools.

However, when there is a disorder, the pelvic floor muscles contract instead of relaxing. This may lead to constipation. This is because while passing stools the individuals attempt to push against a firm pelvic floor muscles wall.

Constipation may occur as a mild or severe gastrointestinal disorder in some cases and the symptom of an undiagnosed problem in others.

There are a broad range of disorders in which constipation may occur as a symptom. These include hypothyroidism, diabetic neuropathy, irritable bowel syndrome, colon cancer etc.

Constipation occurs in people of all ages groups.

Let us discuss what causes constipation in adults. The problems that lead to a congested bowel in adults are as follows:

1. Lack of enough dietary fiber

2. Dehydration

3. Sedentary lifestyle

4. Reckless use of laxatives

5. Not attending the nature’s call

6. Traveling

7. Pregnancy

8. Intestinal dysfunctions

9. Irritable bowel syndrome

10. Problems with colon

11. Pelvic floor dysfunctions

Now let us move on to what causes constipation problem in pregnant women.

Most of the pregnant women have a problem in passing stool. The reasons are as follows:

1. Weakened pelvic floor muscles

2. Secretion of pregnancy hormone that slows down the intestinal muscles.

3. The prenatal vitamins pregnant women take may affect their bowel movement.

4. Dehydration

5. The developing uterus exerts pressure on the colon.

The reason of constipation in menopausal women is the slowing down of their gastrointestinal tract.

What causes constipation in kids is as follows:

1. When the kids are given solid foods for the first time their digestive system takes some time in digesting the new nutrients. This may cause constipation temporarily.

2. A switch in formula milk can also cause bowel problem in kids.

3. A high intake of sugar is another reason of constipation in kids.

4. If a kid spends a long time in the bed due to some illness then he is bound to get constipation.

5. Some kids have a habit of ignoring the need to pass stools either due to their playfulness or due to stressful bowel training.

6. Kids who have a chronic lead exposure may get constipation.

As we are aware of the causes of constipation in all age groups we can take adequate steps in preventing the problem. A timely treatment is imperative because any delay can lead to several complications. When hard stools are passed via the anus, the lining of the anal sphincter muscles gets cracked. This condition is known as anal fissures. Besides hemorrhoids, fecal impaction, bloating and prolapse are some other complications that may arise if constipation is not cured promptly.

How to Relieve Neck Pain Naturally and Retrain Weary Muscles With These 3 Muscle Activation Secrets

If you have sore, stiff neck muscles, you probably have tried to stretch them. You might have received natural therapies like massage or acupuncture.

The missing secret in pain treatment.

Natural treatments, such as massage and acupuncture, are effective for offering immediate relief from neck pain symptoms. Conservative western healthcare, such as medications or surgery, provide emergency treatment of neck problems. But few therapies provide:

* immediate relief of symptoms

* assessment and treatment of the cause, and

* correction of the cause of pain symptoms.

Muscle pain is a sign of imbalance. If one muscle group is overworked, then an opposing group is underworked. Usually, one set of muscles is strong or tight, while the opposite is taut or weak.

Muscle activation is a natural treatment that can provide both immediate and long-term relief, with a corrective focus.

How does muscle activation work?

Muscle activation is rooted in ancient therapies that redirect energy. Reflexology and acupressure are two older examples.

Energy is drawn away from areas that are overstimulated, and energy is directed toward areas that are understimulated. Therefore, with muscle activation methods, energy is drawn to weak muscles to make them stronger.

More recently, Applied Kinesiology (AK) has progressed muscle activation techniques toward a modern scientific formula. AK was developed mainly by chiropractors, but its application is widespread. Fitness professionals and sports medicine practitioners greatly enhance their practices by adding AK to their toolbox.

Relieve your neck pain with muscle activation self-care.

When neck muscles are overworked or fatigued, other muscles are weak and understimulated. Use muscle activation to restore balance.

You will benefit the most if you first get guidance from a health practitioner with special training in muscle activation methods like AK. You will need to learn how to contract, or flex, individual muscles.

Relieve neck tension by activating these three muscles:

1) Lower trapezius– the lower part of this muscle draws your shoulders back and down, relieving stress put on the neck by upper traps;

2) Rhomboids– centered between the shoulder blades, activating your rhomboids will improve posture and prevent slouching; and

3) Triceps– An often-overlooked piece of the postural puzzle. Tight biceps pull the shoulders forward, straining the neck. Think of arm-muscle balance and work your triceps.

By learning muscle activation methods for these three muscles, you can:

*Relieve pain in the neck,

*Improve posture,

*Prevent slouching,

*Ease neck muscle spasms, and

*Reduce tension in the upper body.

Wrist Injury – Causes, Symptoms, Treatment

Wrist and metacarpal injuries are more common in contact sports, racquet sports, and gymnastics. The wrist represents one of the most complicated regions of the musculoskeletal anatomy. It is comprised of 15 bones, 27 articular surfaces, and an elaborate system of ligaments that maintain these bones and surfaces in proper relation to one another.

The wrist joint is formed proximally by the distal surface of the radius and ulna and the attached fibrocartillage disc, and distally by the scaphoid, lunate and triquetral bones. The wrist as a region extends from the distal radius and ulna to the base of the metacarpals. The wrist positions and supports the hand and therefore has to combine strength and precision with a wide range of movement with stability.

Wrist pain is common. Repetitive motion can damage your wrist. Everyday activities like typing, racquet sports or sewing can cause pain, or even carpal tunnel syndrome. Wrist pain with bruising and swelling can be a sign of injury. The signs of a possible fracture include misshapen joints and inability to move your wrist. Some wrist fractures are a result of osteoporosis.

You can also have wrist pain from repetitive use that results in an inflammation of the tendons (tendonitis). This is termed a repetitive motion injury and is really not a true sprain. Carpal tunnel syndrome is another common wrist injury that may occur from repetitive motion.

When an injury occurs, pain and swelling are the main symptoms. The wrist may become discolored and bruised. Doctors refer to this as ecchymosis. The wrist may remain painful for several weeks. There are no specific symptoms that allow your doctor to determine whether a wrist ligament injury has occurred.

Typically, there will be pain, tenderness, swelling, or bruising of the injured wrist. If the injury is serious, you may have trouble moving the wrist.

Wrist Injury Treatment

If there is no fracture seen on the x-ray, the doctor may diagnose a sprain. In cases where there is tenderness in the anatomical snuffbox, the doctor may also suspect there may be a fracture of the scaphoid that is not apparent on the x-rays.

For more severe sprains, you will likely be given a Velcro wrist splint that you can take on and off. Also you might be prescribed some form of pain medication. You should make sure that you let the doctor know what other medications you are taking and any allergies that you have.

Corticosteroid injection for carpal tunnel improves symptoms in more than half of patients; surgical intervention to release the transverse ligament and decompress the nerve entrapment may be indicated

NSAIDs reduce inflammation and use of cock-up splints applied during activities and while sleeping reduces strain from repetitive use and reduces symptoms
