Diabetes: African Americans Deadly Foe

This makes EFA’s an important part of your diet. Other sources of these fats are fish and nuts.

Flax Seed Oil is also known as Linseed Oil. FlaxSeed is a blue flowering plant that is grown on the Western Canadian Prairies for its oil rich seeds. FlaxSeed oil is highly recommended for the general well being, whole body nutrition and helps in restoring body’s natural balance of good and bad prostaglandins. The first time you see flax seeds you were probably, like “ok, they look like sesame seeds, who are you trying to fool?” They may look like sesame seeds, but boy do they pack in a lot of nutrition.

Another study has found that omega-3 fatty acids, and by extension, flaxseed, can reduce the risk of macular degeneration, which is an eye disease that destroys vision by damaging nerve cells in the eye.

Besides lignans, flaxseeds and their oil are also the best food sources of an essential fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid. “Essential” means we must consume it, because our bodies cannot manufacture it.

Diabetes: African Americans Deadly Foe

Diabetes is having a devastating effect on the African American community. Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death in African Americans and their death rates are twenty seven percent higher than whites.

Over 2.8 million African Americans have diabetes and one third of them don’t know they have the disease. In addition, twenty five percent of African Americans between the ages of 65 – 74 have diabetes and one in four African American women, over the age of 55, have been diagnosed with the disease The cause of diabetes is a mystery, but researchers believe that both genetics and environmental factors play roles in who will develop the disease.

Researchers believe that African Americans and African Immigrants are predisposed to developing diabetes. Research suggests that African Americans and recent African immigrants have inherited a “thrifty gene” from their African ancestors.

This gene may have enabled Africans to use food energy more efficiently during cycles of feast and famine. Now, with fewer cycles of feast and famine, this gene may make weight control more difficult for African Americans and African Immigrants. This genetic predisposition, coupled with impaired glucose tolerance, is often associated with the genetic tendency toward high blood pressure. People with impaired glucose tolerance have higher than normal blood glucose levels and are at a higher risk for developing diabetes.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes, commonly know as “sugar diabetes”, is a condition that occurs when the body is unable to properly produce or use insulin. Insulin is needed by the body to process sugar, starches and other foods into energy. Diabetes is a chronic condition for which there is no known cure; diabetes is a serious disease and should not be ignored.

Diabetics often suffer from low glucose levels (sugar) in their blood. Low blood sugar levels can make you disorientated, dizzy, sweaty, hungry, have headaches, have sudden mood swings, have difficulty paying attention, or have tingling sensations around the mouth.

Types of Diabetes

Pre-diabetes is a condition that occurs when a person’s blood glucose levels is higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of type II diabetes. Pre-diabetes can cause damage to the heart and circulatory system, but pre-diabetes can often be controlled by controlling blood glucose levels. By controlling pre-diabetes you can often prevent or delay the onset of Type II diabetes.

Type I or juvenile-onset diabetes usually strikes people under the age of 20, but can strike at any age. Five to ten percent of African Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes are diagnosed with this type of the disease. Type I diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body produces little or no insulin and this type of diabetes must be treated with daily insulin injections.

Type II or adult onset diabetes is responsible for ninety to ninety-five percent of diagnosed diabetes cases in African Americans. Type II results from a condition where the body fails to properly use insulin. According to the American Diabetes Association, “Type II is usually found in people over 45, who have diabetes in their family, who are overweight, who don’t exercise and who have cholesterol problems.” In the early stages it can often be controlled with lifestyle changes, but in the later stages diabetic pills or insulin injections are often needed.

There are also many ways of consuming the seeds. You can simply just chew them. You can grind the seeds to make a power.

As a source of fiber mucilage, oral flaxseed (not flaxseed oil) may possess laxative properties, although only one human trial has been conducted for this indication. Researchers found low incidences of breast cancer and colon cancer in populations that have high amounts of Lignan in their diet.

Flax Hull Lignans are very beneficial for many health conditions. Studies have shown that SDG or lignan (secoisolariciresinol diglycoside, but for simplicity this substance will be referred to as lignans)

The fiber in flaxseeds may also help against cholesterol, since it is soluble (similar to that in oats). Pregnancy related diabetes or gestational diabetes can occur in pregnant women. Gestational diabetes is often associated with high glucose blood levels or hyperglycemia. Gestational diabetes affects about four percent of all pregnant women. The disease usually goes away after delivery, but women who suffer from gestational diabetes are at a higher risk for developing diabetes later in life.

Symptoms of Diabetes

The most common symptoms of diabetes include:

excessive urination including frequent trips to the bathroom

increased thirst

increased appetite

blurred vision

unusual weight loss

increased fatigue

Complications from Diabetes

Diabetes can lead to many disabling and life threatening complications. Strokes, blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, and amputations are common complications that effect African Americans who have diabetes

Kidney Disease

“Diabetes is the second leading cause of end stage kidney disease in African Americans, accounting for about thirty percent of the new cases each year,” says the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois. Up to twenty-one percent of people who develop diabetes will develop kidney disease.

Diabetes is the leading cause of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations in the United States. More than sixty percent of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations in America occur among people with diabetes and African Americans are almost three times more likely to have a lower limb amputated due to diabetes than whites. According to Center for Disease Control (CDC), about 82,000 non-traumatic lower-limb amputations were performed among people with diabetes in 2001.

African Americans are twice as likely to suffer from diabetes related blindness. Diabetics can develop a condition called “Diabetic Retinopathy”, a disease affecting the blood vessels of the eye, which can lead to impaired vision and blindness. Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in people from 20 – 74 years of age and up to 24,000 people loose their sight each year because of diabetes.

Heart Disease

People with diabetes are up to four times more likely to develop heart disease as people who don’t have diabetes. Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) is more common in diabetics and can lead to increased risk of heart attacks, stroke, and poor circulation throughout the body.

Diabetes Risk Factors

You have a greater risk for developing diabetes if you have any of the following:

Family history of diabetes

Low physical activity

Age greater than 45 years

High blood pressure

High blood levels of triglycerides

HDL cholesterol of less than 35

Previous diabetes during pregnancy or baby weighing more than 9 pounds

Diabetes has had a devastating effect on the African American community; it is the fifth leading cause of death and second leading cause of end stage kidney disease in African Americans. African Americans suffer from complications from diabetes at a much higher rate than the rest of the population. African Americans are three times more likely to have a lower limb amputated because of diabetes and twice as likely to suffer from diabetes related blindness.

If you have any of the diabetes risk factors you should contact your physician and have a blood glucose test. Also discuss with your physician lifestyle changes you can take to lower your chances of developing diabetes.

How Long Do Boils Take to Heal?

Are you suffering From Pain? Learn How long Does it Takes to Heal a Boil

The boils are formed by bacterial infection called, Staph. They are red in color and the affected part is swollen and filled with pus. The pus that is formed inside the boils contains bacteria. It is only when the pus comes out the boil is cured. After a few days of the infection of bacteria rashes are seen which are red and itchy? It is painful also.

Soon after the affected swells up and is filled up with white or yellow fluid called pus. By following few home remedies like hot compress which is given several times a day draining of pus happens soon. A cloth dipped in warm water in which Epsom salt is dissolved is put on the affected area. It not only helps in head formation but also gives relaxation from pain. When the head is formed the pus comes out easily. But before this one should never press or squeeze the boil. One should be very careful and clean the area with antiseptic lotion and apply cream and cover it with a bandage. Slowly it heals up.

Therefore we conclude that draining of the pus is the most important part of healing and if the boil becomes too large and does not form head then one needs to see a doctor.

The doctor helps in the draining of the pus through minor surgery. The doctor applies local anesthesia on the affected part. He makes a cut on the boil through sterilized instruments and helps the pus to drain out.

After the pus drains out he covers the affected area with a bandage after cleaning it with antiseptic lotion and applying ointment on to it. The individual remains under his supervision and the doctor changes the bandage from time to time.

In some cases small boils are cured without head formation. They can be cured either by giving warm compresses or by applying creams. In this case the boil is absorbed by the body.

Many people say that the boils heal on their own but it is not true they need to be treated they do not heal on their own. It takes approximately 10 to 25 days for a boil to heal up and that too depends on the boil or the bacterial infection suffered by the skin.

A doctor can drain the pus from the boil by a minor surgery. He would give local anesthesia on the affected area and make a cut on the boil and allow the pus to move out. Later he would clean the entire area with an antiseptic lotion and apply cream, and cover it with a bandage. He can even prescribe an antibiotic depending upon the boil. He would change the bandage from time to time and thus the infection would be cured. But squeezing of boil should be avoided at any cost because it only leads to serious and risky health situations.

Studies Reveal that Acupuncture May Reduce Chemotherapy Side Effects

Acupuncture, which dates as far back as the first millennium B.C., has been championed by practitioners, doctors, and patients as an effective vehicle for achieving balanced health. Acupuncture uses thin needles that are inserted just under the skin and left in place for about a half-hour.

According to Chinese medicine theory, acupuncture helps restore balance and a healthy energy flow within the body. Although scientists don’t fully understand how or why acupuncture works, some studies indicate that it may provide a number of medical benefits including the reduction of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.

Chemotherapy is a treatment for cancers that involves administering chemicals into the body that are found toxic to malignant cells. Chemotherapy, often successful in treating malignant cancer cells, often produces intense side effects in the body. According to a review published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, certain types of acupuncture-point stimulation may relieve chemotherapy-induced nausea or vomiting. Despite significant progress over the past decade in controlling chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, more than half of all patients receiving chemotherapy still suffer from these side effects. Furthermore, nausea may persist when vomiting is controlled. These symptoms can be severely debilitating and often lead patients to refuse further courses of chemotherapy. Refusing chemotherapy can minimize the chance for optimal health outcome.

The acupuncture point thought to be associated with relief of nausea is P6, which is located on the wrist. This point can be stimulated through a variety of methods, including manual acupuncture (insertion of needles), electro-acupuncture (passing electric current through the inserted needle), noninvasive electro-stimulation (application of electric current without a needle), or acupressure (pressure applied by the fingers or an elastic wristband). Patients receiving high-dose chemotherapy found that electro-acupuncture treatments combined with anti-nausea medication were more effective than medication alone in controlling their chemo-related vomiting, according to a study reported in the Dec. 6 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association. According to cancer experts, the study adds to the evidence that non-traditional therapies can be helpful to patients suffering from side effects of chemotherapy. An increasing number of well-designed studies are focusing on complementary and alternative therapies.

Additional support for acupuncture to assist in alleviating the side effects of chemotherapy was offered at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, in December of 2000.

One hundred and four women who were undergoing high-dose chemotherapy prior to having bone marrow transplants received anti-nausea drugs. In addition, each woman received either electro-acupuncture once a day for five days, “minimal needling” with no electrical stimulation once a day for five days, or no additional therapy. The women who received electro-acupuncture experienced significantly less nausea and vomiting than the women who didn’t receive any needling, or who had only acupuncture. The women who received acupuncture without electrical stimulation also had less nausea and vomiting than the women who received no acupuncture.

The San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium offered the following ‘take home message’: Acupuncture may help curb nausea, one of the most feared and debilitating side effects of high-dose chemotherapy. It may provide additional relief of nausea beyond what medication alone can achieve.

David Rosenthal, MD, Chair of the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) national advisory committee on complementary and alternative medicine, agrees that more research is merited. “The effects of this treatment might vary between different chemotherapy patient populations,” he says. “You would also like to know if the benefit is enough, not only in efficacy but in efficiency.” “Still,” he says, “Patients are finding that acupuncture can sometimes be effective in dealing with pain, nausea, and treatment of mucositis (ulcerations in the mouth).” Acupuncture treatment is being provided at many cancer centers, including the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, where Rosenthal is in charge of integrative therapies. “We began offering acupuncture a month ago and the appointments are already filled.” Rosenthal says.

Causes of Childhood Obesity

Obesity is defined as an excessive accumulation of body fat. Obesity is present when total body weight is more than 25 percent fat in boys and more than 32 percent fat in girls. There are various medicines like Phentermine, Adipex etc. which aid in the weight loss for adults but these medicines are definitely not meant for children.

Causes of Childhood Obesity:

– Family: A child whose both parents are obese has a higher chance of developing obesity as compared to other children. This can happen for a variety of reasons like genetic factors or may be the sedentary lifestyle of the parents or the lack of exercise in their daily routine. This can make the child born with obesity.

– Inactive Life: Children these days spend more of their time on playing video games and watching T.V. This has prevented the children of today to engage in some healthy ground activities like sports. Hence children are gradually becoming couch potatoes. Leading an inactive life has made them grow into an obese from just being overweight.

– Heredity: Since not all children leading a sedentary lifestyle, watching more of television, and eating just about anything does not make every child obese therefore researchers are working upon the reasons that why it is so. Heredity has recently been shown to influence fatness, regional fat distribution, and response to overfeeding. In addition, infants born to overweight mothers have been found to be less active and to gain more weight by age three months when compared with infants of normal weight mothers, suggesting a possible inborn drive to conserve energy.

– Lower income and education levels correlate to lower physical exercise levels in developed countries.

– Television advertising of food and beverages directed towards children are usually for products that are high in calories, sugar, sodium, and fat.

Being overweight can cause:

1.    Low self-esteem and bullying

2.    Behavior and learning problems

3.    Stress and anxiety

4.    Comfort eating

5.    Depression

6.    Type 2 diabetes

7.    High blood pressure

8.    Asthma and other respiratory problems

9.    Sleep disorders

10.    Liver disease

11.    Early puberty

12.    Eating disorders

Prevention of Childhood Obesity:

Obesity is easier to prevent than to treat, and prevention focuses in large measure on parent education. In infancy, parent education should center on promotion of breastfeeding, recognition of signals of satiety, and delayed introduction of solid foods. In early childhood, education should include proper nutrition, selection of low-fat snacks, good exercise/activity habits, and monitoring of television viewing. In cases where preventive measures cannot totally overcome the influence of hereditary factors, parent education should focus on building self-esteem and address psychological issues. Childhood obesity is an increasingly difficult problem. Action, if taken early, can change the outcome for obese children or even prevent it happening in the first place. An appropriate exercise problem is one tool that can alter the outcome for such children.

How to Tell If You Have Over-Processed Skin

A relatively new skin condition has evolved-many doctors call it “over-processed” skin. As the name implies, over-processed skin is caused by an excess of invasive treatments. The skin is so abused that eventually it loses its natural properties-from its appearance to its capacity to heal.

Over-processed skin:

• looks like paper and is void of vital energy;

• displays an uneven color or a great deal of redness;

• is flaky even after exfoliation;

• may exhibit a shine though it is actually dehydrated and taut;

• causes wrinkles and lines prematurely especially around the eyes and upper cheeks.

Too many chemical peels, excessive dermabrasion and maybe even excessive or unsuccessful surgery have affected the skin to the extent that the natural vital flow of energy is blocked. This can create two negative conditions:

• the stripping of trace minerals essential to natural osmosis within the skin layers

• proper fluid movement.

As blood, lymph and water no longer flow properly, the skin is lacking nutrients. Oxygenation does not reach all the layers of the skin. Elimination of toxins is affected. In short, the skin has lost its capacity to hydrate and to heal from within. More procedures only aggravate the condition and skin products no longer produce their former effects.

The very existence of this condition is a sad but very good demonstration of what happens when the skin is not respected for the organ it is, and when it is treated as if it were a mere piece of cloth.

Holistically minded estheticians are alert to these risks and educate their customers that more invasive treatments are not better.

Prevention and Restoration of Over-Processed Skin

Let’s remember that major skin conditions do not erupt overnight unless they are related to food intolerance, chemical poisoning, or infection. Undesirable esthetic manifestations evolve progressively.

It is important to know how to read the signs your skin is giving you. Most skin conditions, including over-processed skin, can be remedied favorably when they are addressed at their early stage. Of course, the knowledgeable esthetician knows how to recognize the root cause of esthetic manifestations and how to select the appropriate energetic tools to use.

Benign conditions left untreated can become chronic over time. This increases the difficulty of resolving them by natural solutions. Often, adjustments to lifestyle must parallel a well-conceived treatment series and home product selection.

Balanced skin is a blessing to be preserved. It can be maintained with good lifestyle habits and personalized skincare regimentation.

Preventive and restorative skincare represents an investment on your part. In view of the high cost and high risk of invasive facial techniques that lead to damaged, over-processed skin, one ounce of holistic prevention is worth a pound of invasive treatment.

Stress Management – Medical Risks of Stress

What is Stress?

Stress may be defined as the three-way relationship between demands on people, our feelings about those demands and our ability to cope with them. Stress is most likely to occur in situations where:

1. Demands are high.

2. The amount of control we have is low.

3. There is limited support or help available for us.

Who is Affected Most by Stress?

Virtually all people experience stressful events or situations that overwhelm our natural coping mechanisms. And although some people are biologically prone to stress, many outside factors influence susceptibility as well.

Studies indicate that some people are more vulnerable to the effects of stress than others. Older adults; women in general, especially working mothers and pregnant women; less-educated people; divorced or widowed people; people experiencing financial strains such as long-term unemployment; people who are the targets of discrimination; uninsured and underinsured people; and people who simply live in cities all seem to be particularly susceptible to health-related stress problems.

People who are less emotionally stable or have high anxiety levels tend to experience certain events as more stressful than healthy people do. And the lack of an established network of family and friends predisposes us to stress-related health problems such as heart disease and infections. Caregivers, children and medical professionals are also frequently found to be at higher risk for stress-related disorders.

Job-related stress is particularly likely to be chronic because it is such a large part of life. Stress reduces a worker’s effectiveness by impairing concentration, causing sleeplessness and increasing the risk of illness, back problems, accidents and lost time. At its worst extremes, stress that places a burden on our hearts and circulation can often be fatal. The Japanese have a word for sudden death due to overwork: karoushi.

Medical Affects of Chronic Stress

The stress response of the body is like an airplane readying for take-off. Virtually all systems, such as the heart and blood vessels, the immune system, the lungs, the digestive system, the sensory organs, and the brain are modified to meet the perceived danger.

A stress-filled life really seems to raise the odds of heart disease and stroke down the road. Researchers have found that after middle-age, those who report chronic stress face a somewhat higher risk of fatal or non-fatal heart disease or stroke over the years. It is now believed that constant stress takes its toll on our arteries, causing chronically high levels of stress hormones and pushing people to maintain unhealthy habits like smoking.

Stressed-out men are twice as likely as their peers to die of a stroke. There are weaker such findings among women, which is likely due to the fairly low number of heart disease and stroke cases among women, rather than a resistance to the health effects of chronic stress. Women seem slightly more susceptible to the effects of stress than men.

Simply put, too much stress puts you at dire risk for health problems. Whether it comes from one event or the buildup of many small events, stress causes major physical alterations that often lead to health problems. Here is a list of some of these changes:

• Our heart rates increase, to move blood to our muscles and brains.

• Our blood pressures go up.

• Our breathing rates increase.

• Our digestion slows down.

• Our perspiration increases.

• We feel a rush of strength at first, but over time stress makes us feel weak.

These reactions helped our ancestors survive threats by preparing for either “fight or flight.” Today, our bodies still react the same way, but the events that cause stress do not require this ancient mechanism.

Stress can also greatly raise our risk of:

• Ulcers and digestive disorders

• Headaches

• Migraine headaches

• Backaches

• Depression

• Suicide

• High blood pressure

• Stroke

• Heart attack

• Alcohol and drug dependencies

• Allergies and skin diseases

• Cancer

• Asthma

• Depressed immune system

• More colds and infections

We have to learn ways to relieve stress, because when it goes on for very long or happens too often, it obviously can cause many serious health problems.

Rashes of the Skin

Skin rashes is a common skin discomfort which causes small red spots, redness and itchiness. It can happen anywhere is your skin – your face, your hands, your legs, your body.

Using the wrong skin care products such as cleanser, toner, scrub, moisturizer or masque may upset your skin. It does not matter whether you are using chemical based or natural / herbal based products, if your skin cannot cope or accept the particular facial ingredient, your skin will break out with rashes – signaling you “Hello! You have used the wrong product..”. Some people may be allergy to essential oils, even the most expensive and branded skin care product may cause allergy to some users.

Switching skin care products (different brands) too often in a short period of time say within one or two months, can also cause irritation, sometimes rashes to your face. Just before your skin could adjust to the current brand, you have decided to try new ones. Eventually your skin could not take it and begin to show signs of rashes.

Stick to the skin care products which suit you most, try to do a patch test when trying to start a new skin care product.
Switch to a new brand only when necessary due to skin changes, most importantly after 6-8 months of using the current skin care brand.
Do not be tempted to try new skin care products after watching television advertisements. If you wish to do so, get some samples and try it on the neck area or hands.

Old make up products such as foundation, concealer, lip stick, blusher, eye liner , mascaras or eye shadow can cause skin rashes. Beware of make up tools such as dirty brushes and dirty comb. Try not to keep your make up for more than 6 months in hot and humid area, and for cold and dry area, keep it up to around one year of time frame but not more.

In order to allow your make up to last longer, keep the product clean and fresh at all time. Wipe the sides and corner of bottles, tube or containers after using each time to prevent from getting contaminated.

Taking certain food can cause some skin rashes to the facial areas. You must have come across friends who experience facial skin rash after taking seafood or beef. If you find that you get facial skin rashes after taking certain food, perhaps you should avoid taking that particular food or consult your doctor for advice.

Do not allow certain chemicals such as laundry detergent, dish washing liquid or other cleaning chemicals to smear onto your facial skin. Some of these chemicals can be too strong for your facial skin which results in skin rashes. Hair shampoo can also cause skin problems. When washing your hair, please ensure that the hair shampoo does not flow down the face area. Chemicals for construction use can be harmful to your facial skin too – cement, paint, shellac, thinner. Avoid placing your face near these chemicals.

Always keep your hands clean before touching your face. Bacteria on your hands can cause pimples and even skin irritation. Keep your pillows, bed, mattress and sofa clean, otherwise mites could end up disturbing your top layer of skin causing face and body rashes all over. Face and bath towel should be kept clean at all time to avoid skin problems as well.

Automated External Defibrillators – The History and the Invention of AEDs

The discovery that someone’s heart can be restarted with the use of an electrical charge is one of modern medicine’s greatest developments. This idea began around 1888 when Mac William suggested that ventricular fibrillation could be a sudden death cause. In 1989, Batelli and Prevost made the discovery that large amounts of voltage provided to the heart could halt ventricular fibrillation within animals. Other studies completed in the nineteenth century by scientists furthered electricity’s effects on the heart.

An AED (automated external defibrillator) is a portable electronic device that is able to determine someone’s heart rhythm. It detects life threatening issues within the heart and has the ability to treat them with defibrillation. If necessary, an AED can provide electric shock to the heart to restore a normal heart rhythm. When someone suffers from a sudden cardiac arrest, the chances of him or her surviving is reduced to between 7 and 10 percent with each minute that passes without either CPR or defibrillation.

The first successful defibrillation on a human was reported in 1947 by Dr. Claude Beck. During one of his surgeries, he noticed his patient was experiencing ventricular fibrillation. He administered an alternating current of 60 Hz and stabilized the heartbeat. This particular patient of his lived; defibrillators were created.

An AED has a built-in computer that assesses a heart’s rhythm, determines if it needs defibrillation and then administers the needed level of shock. The user of the AED is guided through this process with either audible prompts, visual prompts or both. Automated external defibrillators are usually sold in kits that contain a power unit, paddle electrodes and accessories. Each part is made individually and then put together through an integrated process. Today, manufacturers of medical devices have created many defibrillators, external and internal, that are able to add years to the lives of many patients.

External defibrillators can be used at hospitals or emergency sites. The user begins by turning on the defibrillator and applying conductive gel on the patient’s chest or paddle electrodes. The level of energy is then decided upon and the instrument charges. The paddles are firmly placed on the chest with some pressure. Buttons found on the electrodes are pressed at the same time and electric shock is then delivered to the patient. After this procedure, the heartbeat is then monitored for a regular heartbeat. The entire process is then repeated if needed.

In 1954, the first closed-chest defibrillation was performed on a dog by William and Kouwenhoven Milnor. This process was studied by Paul Zoll in 1956 and he performed the first successful on a human. Qilliam Bennett Kouwenhoven, born in Brookly in 1886, was an electrical engineer and invented three defibrillator and also developed CPR techniques.

The AED (automated external defibrillator) was created in 1978. This particular device is made with sensors that are placed on the chest to decide is ventricular fibrillation is occurring. If it is detected, the device gives the proper instructions for providing an electrical shock. These automated devices have been able to reduce the training that is needed to use defibrillators and have also saved thousands of people’s lives.

Cold Sore – Home Remedies and Treatment

Cold sore is called herpes labialis on medical term. The infection caused by the herpes simplex type I virus. It leads to the development of a small patch of erythema then a vesicle that erodes appears and usually itching and soreness on the skin of the mouth, lips or lip area. The first symptoms usually appear within 1 or 3 weeks after contact.Cold sore is contagious and once you are infected with it, the virus remains with you for a life. The virus stays dormant most of the time in the nerve cells on your body, until some of certain things can cause recurrence outbreak.

Cold sores or fever blisters can be annoying, not to mention unsightly. Such sores are the products of the herpes simplex virus. They will begin as red dots, then start puffing out, all itchy and tingling and cold sore swelling will take place. As the blister gathers moisture and water, it gets larger, and even more embarrassingly conspicuous.

Cold sores actually come from any contact of the herpes simplex virus with your mouth, perhaps early in your childhood. The virus picked out a host cell and moved into it. The cell, perhaps a nerve, then suffered to become the puppet of the virus, as the viral DNA gave orders to the host to produce more of the herpes simplex virus.

Cold sores are blisters that commonly appear on the external edges of the mouth, on the lips and nose caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1). These are painful blisters that may last a few days or weeks and highly contagious. If the cold sore is not bothersome, some people let the virus takes its course and leave the cold sore alone to heal on its own. Unfortunately, most of the time cold sore is annoying due to its ugly appearance, pains and discomforts. These are the reasons why sufferers tend to find ways to relieve a cold sore.

Home remedy cold sore treatment

Lysine – This is a very popular supplement that you can take at the first signs of a cold sore. Lysine is known to shorten the length of a cold sore by three to four days. When you first feel the tingling or notice a cold sore take 1000 mg. 2 to 3 times a day.

Sage Tea – Drinking sage tea like lysine helps shorten the length of a cold sore and keeps the simplex virus from spreading to other parts of the body.

Ice – Cold sore virus like warm wet places to grow and holding a ice cube right on the cold sore will make the simplex virus go back into hibernation and keep the sore from spreading.

Prescription medications from your doctor, he may recommend you to take the antiviral medicines. It would costly and antiviral medicine are not suitable for everbody also risk negative side effect. Antiviral medicines work best if you effective take it when you think the virus is just starting to come back, before you see the blister. Antiviral medicines are probably the most effective cold sore cure to stopping the virus while using the medication, but after you stopped the treatment, they do not prevent recurrence.

Celiac Disease’s Long History

Celiac disease has a long history and too many names. It is referred to simultaneously as coeliac disease or as celiac disease, then either celiac disease or celiac sprue disease. This frustrating and mysterious conditions got its name from Greek physician Aretaeus of Cappadocia. He called it koiliakos, which is based on the word koelia (abdomen in Greek).

What Is Celiac Disease (CD)?

CD represents an autoimmune disorder where consuming gluten triggers its symptoms and ailments. It is believed to be a genetic disorder that only manifests itself when the individual ingests gluten. Unfortunately, there are many degrees of gluten intolerance, and not all of them can be verified with certainty through current testing methodologies.

Who Named This Troubling Digestive Disorder?

Aretaeus of Cappadocia named it celiac disease because it was the first condition observed where well-fed children showed signs of undernourishment. He specifically applied his discovery and title to something he believed was experienced primarily by children. The word celiac, or coeliac, has its origins in the Greek word for abdomen: koelia.

When Did the Modern Medical World Start Exploring CD?

In the late nineteenth century, a British physician named Samuel Gee covered celiac disease in a well-known lecture. He described it as a form of chronic indigestion than anyone of any age could suffer. However, like Aretaeus, Gee also believed it mostly affected children. Gee was the first researcher to suggest that “errors in diet” could cause CD to manifests itself in its sufferers.

When Did We Discover That Gluten Was the Trigger?

Not long beyond the end of World War II, a Dutch pediatrician named Willem-Karel Dicke analyzed data and discovered a pattern: A Netherlands bread shortage during the war virtually eliminated the number of deaths among children attributed to coeliac disease.

His continued studies also revealed that the death rate among celiac children in the Netherlands then rose after the war ended and bread became widely available again.

Following his observation and epiphany, many other researchers broke down the proteins in wheat until they discovered that gluten was the culprit. Once gluten was isolated as the trigger, researchers were able to begin focusing their attention on how and why some people experienced gluten intolerance.

And that is how we have come to where we are in our understanding of various forms of gluten sensitivities. Unfortunately, we still don’t understand all forms of gluten intolerance and why some people who test negatively for celiac disease may still suffer from significant gluten intolerance.

Boob Growth In The Twenty First Century!

Natural Breast Enlargement In Adolescence

The concept of breast enlargement or in rather informal tones, breast enhancement, is as much a controversial a topic as any other female adolescent phenomena there is. Yes, breast growth starts out to be the concern of young prepubescent teens and can continue to be an issue throughout womanhood.

As we all know, breast growth varies among individuals, depending upon their inborn genetic makeup. This is to say, of course, that if your genes dictate that you have minimal breast tissue then you can expect to have small boobs. Likewise, if your genes say you’ll have large scale boob growth, then good for you. Of course, I’d personally prefer to be somewhere in the middle, where they are not too small or too large.

Are Most Women Satisfied With Their Breast Size?

It’s a fact that many women are dissatisfied with their natural boob characteristics, and would want to change the appearance of their boobs. The many issues about bust growth have resulted in a great deal of research as to how one can manipulate, control or influence the natural boob growth pattern in such a way that it would be optimal for a woman’s preference. More often than not, they would want their boobs to appear firmer, rounder, or fuller. Having large boobs has a myriad of meaning to a lot of women; they could be a symbol of femininity, motherhood, or could simply be that of beauty. Here’s the good news – women can actually do something to enhance their boob growth through natural means.

When it comes to enhancing breast growth and increasing boob size though, one doesn’t have to go under the knife to achieve great looking boobs. By doing so, one could spare oneself from unnecessary costs of cosmetic procedures which rarely ever turn out to be successful. The natural method of boob growth is comprised of numerous ways to improve boob shape and size.

One natural way of enhancing boob growth includes strengthening the pectoral muscles, which are the muscles situated beneath the breasts. Recommended exercises such as chest presses can help to achieve enhanced growth results. These exercises are believed to tone up and give a better shape to the breasts.

More Natural Boob Growth Techniques

Although yet to be proven as a 100% effective boob growth technique, the simple breast massage is another known natural method for enhancing boob growth especially among Asian women. Asian countries like China and Thailand freely embrace this method’s therapeutic effects; according to them, massage works by relaxing the muscles that are continuously tensed up so that harmful substances caused by longstanding stress will be eliminated, allowing healthful nutrients to circulate through the breasts. Added to that, the massage may also, in a way, help to prevent the occurrence of breast cancer by improving the lymphatic circulation in the breasts as the disease has also been attributed to poor lymphatic drainage. Unfortunately, the benefits of the breast massage has not yet been widely accepted and utilized by the masses. Although many people have heard of self-breast massage, quite often very few actually perform this technique, either because of personal doubts or for healthy bust growth reasons.

Another great way of increasing boob growth naturally is, as you guessed it, the use of heat. This method is very simple to do and very convenient especially for the busy woman of today. The heat is said to promote boob growth through its effect in increasing blood flow to the breast tissue. As such, the hormones responsible for boob growth are consequently increased. However, that being said, cancer cells or masses will increase as well in response to the stimulating effect of heat. Another great disadvantage in its use is that not enough research has been done yet to prove its effectiveness.

Then there are also the boob enhancing supplements or pills. What you need to remember about these supplements is that you have to take them as prescribed by a physician or manufacturer of the product. As with any dietary oral supplements, factors such as timing and method of intake play a very crucial role to the overall effectiveness of these boob growth supplements.

Allowing your boobs to be free from any pressure restrictions such as those of bras may actually help in making your boobs grow bigger. Bras and other constricting clothing may impede blood circulation to the breasts and thus, impede in the process of healthy natural breast enhancement.

Practicing these natural methods, along with a healthy lifestyle such as good sleep and nutrition, may aid you in your pursuit to achieving the best possible and great looking boobs without having to invest on rather expensive cosmetic surgical procedures. Having said this, one must also note that these methods don’t always guarantee a 100% success rate, and is largely variable among different women. One method may be more effective to one while it may not be as effective in another. You would expect to undergo a series of trial and error scenarios before you find what method suits you best. Always keep in mind though that whatever natural method you use to increase breast size you end up deciding on, make sure you always prioritize your health above anything else.

Should you opt for the more artificial methods such as the controversial plastic surgery, it is best you consider talking these matters over in detail with a credible and board certified cosmetic surgeon before making up your mind in thinking about going under the knife.

Scientific Uses Of Gold

Gold remains the best investment at present because there are new uses that are being discovered every day for this precious material. People who decide to purchase gold coins or bullion will soon realize that they have taken one of their best decisions. The price of gold is very small nowadays as a result of the economic recession, so you should take advantage and acquire several bars of gold.

Scientists are about to transform the precious metal into a vital element of our lives and not just a decorative material. We are all familiar with the fact that gold is used to create many beautiful adornments, but there are numerous other domains that make use of this fabric to improve technology.

It is the medical field that has been primarily revolutionized by the precious metal. Doctors have discovered that gold may be used as an efficient weapon against severe diseases, such as, cancer and arthritis. In the future, it is possible that gold nanoparticles may be used to transport anti-cancer substances directly to the tumor and thus, avoid damaging healthy cells as it usually happens with chemotherapy. Dental affections may also be treated with gold as this material is highly resistant and it enables dentists to create long lasting fillings.

It comes as no surprise to see that gold is used nowadays to improve many electronic devices. Its conductivity and high resistance against corrosion has determined scientists to replace copper with gold wires, connectors and films. As a consequence, the majority of the objects we use on a daily basis, such as phones, computers, cars, etc. contain pieces made out of gold or platinum.

The beneficial effects of gold have reached cosmetologists´ ears and now many producers of beauty treatments have included gold flakes and nanoparticles in their products. When applied on the face or the body, this precious metal has the capacity of increasing the blood circulation which, in turn, helps the skin regenerate and get rid of wrinkles.

Our lives will become much better thanks to this extraordinary metal. As the gold demand increases, prices are expected to grow, too, in the near future. As a consequence, business consultants advise people to purchase gold bullion right away.

What Triggers A Heart Attack? 6 Early Warning Signals

It goes down in the books as “sudden cardiac death” and it’s not at all uncommon – in fact, heart attacks are among the leading causes of death in the civilized world today. Most of their victims are men in their 40s and 50s; a third of these men are given no apparent warning. Their heart attacks strike as unexpectedly as lightning on a summer day.

Actually, of course, heart attacks hardly ever occur “out of the blue” – they’re merely the knockout punch delivered to cardiovascular system that’s already been beaten down by years of abuse. In a man whose heart is already vulnerable certain things – stress, temperature extremes, and alcohol can act as triggers that touch off a heart attack.

Researchers have identified at least six acute triggers of sudden cardiac death. They’ are the equivalent of righteous left hook to the head and knowing about them may help you learn when to duck.

1. Emotional Stress: A few years ago, researchers at Harvard and Birmingham and women’s hospital in Boston made headlines when they found that a substantial number of life threatening coronary events were triggered by acute emotional stress – in one case, a cliffhanger baseball game.

Getting all worked up emotionally can apparently touch off ventricular fibrillation, a heart arrhythmia one researcher describes as “a chaotic electrical storm” in the heart. Fibrillation turns the heart’s magnificently efficient contractions into erratic spasms, nearly destroying its ability to pump blood.

Of 117 survivors of life threatening arrhythmias questioned by the Boston investigators, 25 had some kind of acute psychological disturbance within the preceding 24 hours. In 15 cases, the disturbance preceded the arrhythmia by only an hour. In one case, a Yankees fan watching his team go down to the Red Sox on TV got so worked up that his heart went into fibrillation.

But what good is life if you can’t get all worked up about it? The point to remember is that emotional stress of 10 minutes duration is usually harmful only if it has been preceded by years of unrelenting, chronic emotional stress.

2. Temperature Extremes: Hospital emergency room personnel have long known that the incidence of heart attacks increases during snow storms. Some researches suspects it may simply be the cold.

When you are cold, the blood vessels to the skin constrict so you can conserve body heat. Blood vessels to the heart may also constrict, cutting off the blood supply to the heart.

People with angina pectoris (heart related chest pains) may suffer increases in the number and severity of attacks just by exposure to cold. This can happen in hot weather, too, or under any circumstances that cause the blood vessels to the heart to constrict.

People with angina pectoris usually have a fixed blockage. That does not change. But if you increase the work of heart by constricting the vessels in another place, that may be enough to precipitate a heart attack.

3. The Heavy Evening Meal: When researchers examined the coroner’s reports o 100 sudden deaths of British men listed as victims of coronary artery disease, they found that about a quarter had died about an hour after eating. Although this particular investigation didn’t turn up any significant link to the fat content of men’s last meals, there is other evidence that a fat-laden mean can have devastating consequences on the cardiovascular system.

Study of arteriosclerosis in Los Angeles, once suggested adding the “heavy evening meal” to the risk factors for heart attacks and strokes. The park of digestion probably occurs during deep sleep periods, when the body is unable to move blood fats through the arteries quickly. In arteries already damaged by arthrosclerosis, it’s likely that those fats will help block already narrowed arteries. The result is a bottleneck – “an ideal situation” for platelets to clot.

4. Booze: The same British researchers, examining the same 100 coroner’s reports, also found that slightly less than a quarter of the people had been drinking alcohol shortly before they died.

In fact, investigator in Scotland, looking for acute triggers of sudden cardiac death, found that Saturday night and alcohol were the fatal combination. Other studies in this country have implicated binge drinking in sudden heart attack.

5. Monday Morning: Canadian researchers at the University of Manitoba discovered a curious statistic: of all the sudden cardiac death they studied, 75 percent occur on Monday, the first day of the week, as people returned to their jobs.

The group they studied consisted of 3983 men, all of whom had been found fit for pilot training. The men who had obvious clinical signs of heart disease might be stricken at any time during the week, the research team found. But those who did not have obvious disease almost always died suddenly, on Monday, at work.

Could Monday mornings be all that blue? Well, may be so. The researchers speculated that a person’s return to work after a weekend break might cause enough psychological stress to touch off an arrhythmia, the presumed cause of these sudden deaths.

6. Morning – Any Morning: Harvard cardiologist James E. Muller reports that heart attacks seem to have their own internal sense of timing. Of 847 heart attacks he studied, most had occurred between 6 a.m. and noon.

Dr Muller used information supplied by over 50 investigators nationwide to pinpoint the peak hours of cardiac arrest. His findings confirmed the work of researchers in Europe and the Soviet Union, who also found an early morning heart attack peak. It’s probably no coincidence that the 6 a.m. to noon period is when heart rate, arterial pressure and physical activity are also on the increase.

What is Toenail Fungus?

Toenail fungus is problem that many of the people suffer usually in old ages. It occurs when a minor fungi enters the nail portion of the toe and makes it position well by spreading in inner surface. Toenail fungus have different symptoms to different people, some observe it in brown color and some in yellow. Its gets swollen or some times a hard part of the nail area. Toenail fungus gets more space in the moist skin of the toe, also wearing of socks and shoes make it possible to grow faster.

The toenail fungus doesn’t get much common among children, but that’s sure it gets possibility with the growing age. Doctors call this fungus infection as Onychomycosis. The toenail fungus can be cured now by several medicines and home remedies as well. Toenail fungus infection usually occurs when a particular body interacts in public places. Places like gyms, swimming pools and even among the family members the fungus can easily spread. The toenail fungus is seen to change the color of the toenail, sometime yellow and sometimes white etc. This type of fungus can occur on fingernails as well, but it mostly found on foot toe, as it grows slow and usually remains moisten due to wearing socks and shoes. The fungus infection usually occurs on the big toe or the smallest one but it doesn’t matter that it can pick up place on any of the toes. In short we can describe that this type of fungus is a spreading type one, it can affect the next toenail or any other body part as well.

Some other reasons for the toenail infection are improper PH level of the skin; often the skin is not completely dried of the foot skin after bathing or exercises so this also makes the skin open for the fungus infection. One main category of the people that suffer of the toenail fungus is diabetic patients or those people with improper immune system. These people are more prone to toenail fungus and for securing one’s own body they must need to cut nails regularly. Once the toenail fungus occurs, it gets fine by its own time. This may take much time depending on the condition of the fungus infection so the easier way to avoid is the prevention. Preventing the fungus infection is just the matter of paying attention to the nail portions of both hand and feet.

The first thing to avoid is to use the shared shoes or socks of any body else for personal use. Every body has hidden bacteria in the moist body parts and its related things if used by one will allow the fungus spread easily on one’s own body. It is better to keep the feet covered in the public places where others bare feet are interacted easily like that of swimming pool and public showers. Some kind of covering material should be worn before going to such places. There are different devices available in the market that relaxes the leg muscles and cushions it avoiding the over-probation. Second main thing to consider is to dry feet properly after bathing or exercises or anything that makes feet more moisten. Do not leave your feet to dry in air, its better to pat your feet with toweling cloth.

Get your feet nails trimmed and proper pedicure is a must. It is recommended not to apply nail polish for long time as it can lock the bacteria inside the nail skin and fungus infection can develop easily. These are some minor aids one can do attentively. But if the problem persists and the pain is permanent one should at the very first seek guidance of the foot doctor. Doctor can bring relief either by a minor cut on the puss or by other medicinal method that chop off the problem. A little attention if paid on the foot can avoid lot of problems like the toenail fungus.
