I am asked some form of the following questions almost every day:

“What’s it like being a sports anchor and reporter?” Fun but hard.

“How did you get into this business?” Long story.

“Have you always wanted to do this?” Yes. This and more.

But more and more, the individuals who want to enter the sports media world think we spend our days cheering at games, chugging champagne with owners and chest bumping athletes. Not quite.

Take Easter Sunday 2013, for example. Photographer Bill Ellis and I left San Antonio at 10:30am, where the Rangers had just wrapped up their spring training schedule with a two-game series against the Padres. Our final destination? Houston for the season opener between the Rangers and Astros on Sunday night.

Here’s a typical “day in the life” that includes everything from stale hot dogs to a drunken Astros fan bum rushing our live shot:

7:30am: Wake up.

8am: Head to the hotel lobby to FaceTime with my daughter and husband.

8:15am: Workout for 45 minutes. I’m always fighting that extra 10 pounds a camera adds.

9am: Breakfast and blogging about things to do in Houston.

10am: Back to the room to pack.

10:30am: Leave for Houston

1:30pm: Arrive at Hilton Americas. Start getting dressed immediately with big hair and TV anchor makeup.

2:45pm: Leave for Minute Maid Park. It’s about 8/10 of a mile from the hotel, so we walk.

3pm: Arrive at the park, get credentials, go through security and get lost in the bowels of the facility trying to find the Rangers clubhouse. Talk to producer at the station about our plan for the evening.

3:30pm: Rangers clubhouse opens. We interview David Murphy, Lance Berkman, Mitch Moreland and Ian Kinsler. Adrian Beltre and AJ Pierzynski turn us down for interviews.

4:30pm: Interview Ron Washington amidst a gaggle of reporters in the Rangers dugout. Once done with Wash, we start shooting video and gathering interviews with fans for our story on Opening Day that will air on the Score on CBS11 later that night.

5:15pm: Fight our way upstairs to the press box to see if there is a seat for us to watch the game and space for Bill to set up equipment to begin editing our story. No space, as they are at maximum capacity. Reporters are sitting in the dining room and at spare tables in the hallway. Bill and I go downstairs to find a space to work.

5:30pm: Set up shop in the Astros press conference room on the completely opposite side of the Park from the Rangers clubhouse, about a four-minute walk. I begin logging sound and video to write my story.

6pm: Done writing story. It’s time to voice audio. There is no ideal sound proof area to record audio, so we use the Astros cloth press conference backdrop to muffle the sound. A photographer from a Houston station leaves the room in the middle of our tracking session, so I start over. Repeatedly. It takes me three or four attempts to get the audio recorded. By now it’s freezing in the press room. Bill and I are shivering. There is no cell service in this room. We have to leave the room and walk to a lobby area for text messages or phone calls. Luckily the building’s Wi-Fi signal works in this room.

6:20pm: Both of us are starving. I trudge back to the press room to grab something to eat. Bill is hungry but wants to edit this story and get it done. He asks me to get him a pretzel.

6:30pm: Buy media dinner for $10. I broke my fork trying to cut the meat offered. I take about three bites of everything: the freezing iceberg lettuce, the hard meat and greasy potatoes. I try the popcorn. It’s stale. The frozen yogurt isn’t bad. I leave to get Bill’s pretzel. Every concession stand is packed. By the time I have waited my 22 minutes and get to the counter for his pretzel, this particular stand has run out of them. I try to text Bill to see if he wants something else. He doesn’t get the text because of the bad cell signal. I march back to the press box to grab him one of three hot dogs left on the roaster. It looks like it’s been sitting there for four hours.

7:45pm: Finally get back to our base in the bowels of Minute Maid Park. Bill gets his cold hot dog. I finally get the chance to watch the game on a TV in the press conference room. I don’t actually see a single pitch in person. The Astros radio broadcast is piped through the TV. I use my MLB at Bat app to listen to Eric Nadel and Matt Hicks. In a rush to leave my hotel room, I leave my iPad charger in the room. I have to conserve battery life to use my iPad later in the evening so can’t listen to them continuously.

9:55pm: Top of the 9th inning. We walk to the Rangers clubhouse to prepare for postgame interviews

10:05pm: It seems to take longer than usual to get into the clubhouse after the Rangers 8-2 loss. We enter Wash’s office. Rangers PR guy John Blake says that TV reporters will ask questions first followed by print media but every media person packs Wash’s tiny office. I ask two questions and leave.

10:30pm: Interview Matt Harrison, Derek Lowe and AJ Pierzynski. Get 1-on-1 interviews with Nelson Cruz, Elvis Andrus and David Murphy. Bill points out it’s getting late and we need leave for our live shot location.

10:50pm: Arrive to live shot location outside Minute Maid Park. We need to feed back the interviews we gathered. We are working with our Houston “sister station” KTRK. Their technology is not compatible with ours so we must feed our material a second time using our “backup” equipment brought with us from Dallas. The video quality is not that great.

11pm: Touch up hair and makeup for live shot. Begin gathering my thoughts to determine how I am going to introduce my postgame sound and story that we shot earlier in the day. A nice young lady from Dallas starts asking me how to break into the sports broadcasting business. I chat with her for about 10 minutes. I’ve only spent five solid minutes preparing what to say before I am on television

11:15pm: In place for our live shot. An over-served fan shouts to us “Go back to Arlington!” His wife drags him away. Bill is still feeding material to our station. A photographer from KTRK is shooting my live shot. There is a monster truck cruising up and down the street behind us while sitting on his horn. Once I begin introducing my postgame interviews, I notice the KTRK photographer shaking his head “no”. I feel a brush of air over my right shoulder. Out of the corner of my left eye I see Bill rushing towards me. He pushes a drunken Astros fan out of the way. Bill says this guy was charging towards us. I turn around to see briefly what’s happening. I think I stumble on my intro.

11:19pm: Our live shot is over. Bill can’t believe that guy came out of nowhere. My heart is still pounding because it freaked me out so much. We break down our equipment and walk back to Hilton.

11:45pm: Arrive at the hotel. We’re starving. Again. There is a lone Easter basket leftover from the hotel’s egg hunt with some Reese’s peanut butter cup miniature candies. I grab six of those and go to the room for my “second dinner”. Bill later tells me he ordered room service. It finally arrives at 12:45am. $42.50 for a chicken sandwich and carrot cake.

Monday Morning:

8am: Leave for Dallas and write this post in the car on the way home.

Noon: Arrive home. My daughter runs away when I try to hug her. I think that despite FaceTime, she forgot about me.

While we’re not always on the road, we travel a fair amount. In fact our days are jam-packed a little tighter when we’re at home. Long days with unexpected surprises and a few speed bumps are the norm. Is this an easy job? No. Is it fun? Without question. We wouldn’t have it any other way… except the no-hug part from Jordan.

There are many options to choose from including tubal surgery, in vitro fertilization (IVF), artificial insemination, and others. The most common infertility treatment, however, involves hormone regulation through fertility drugs. In fact, fertility drugs have become so effective that three out of every four couples eventually are able to perceive.

The most common drug, and usually the first choice, prescribed for a woman with ovulatory dysfunction is Clomid (i.e., clomiphene citrate). Clomid basically tricks the brain into thinking that the amount of estrogen in the bloodstream is too low. It causes the hypothalamus to release more of the hormone GnRH. This in turn causes the release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH0 which work together to stimulate the ovary to produce estrogen and eggs.

If a woman is not ovulating or is ovulating irregularly, it may be due to their pituitary glands not producing enough FSH and LH at the right time in their menstrual cycle. If this is the case, she is a good candidate for Clomid. If irregular ovulation is the only fertility related problem that a woman has, she has a one out of two chance of becoming pregnant within 6 months with Clomid.

A second class of popular fertility drug are gonadotropins. They are similar in composition to the FSH and LH hormones. Normally, FSH and LH hormones are produced by the pituitary gland. If they are not, however, gonadrotropins are used to replace the FSH and LH hormones that would normally be produced by the pituitary gland. These drugs used to be produced from the urine of menopausal women. Nowadays, however, they are genetically engineered. These drugs are not taken orally but are given by injection either in the buttocks or just under the skin.

Lesser prescribed fertility drugs include:

Human Menopausal Conadrotropins (hMG) – A purified extract of LH and FSH derived from the urine of postmenopausal women. It is injected either subcutaneous or directly into the muscle.

Human Chorionic Conadotropin (hCG) –  this is a hormone that helps the ovaries produce progesterone and estrogen. Ovulation usually occurs within 36 hours after injection

Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) – this hormone triggers the pituitary gland to make the LH and FSH hormones. It is expensive and less available in the U.S. than it used to be.

Progesterone supplement – these are given to women who’s body can’t produce enough progesterone on it’s own. It is usually taken orally, but can be taken by injection as well.

As science advances, more fertility drugs come into the market every year. It’s important to note that often these drugs are not usually used alone. They are often used in combination with some other fertility treatment. Also, in many cases the cause of the infertility is not with the woman. For example, the male’s sperm may be bad. In other cases, the cause of the infertility may be with the woman, but not related to hormones. In these cases hormone treatments will be useless.

Calves, Biking and the Thumper Sport Percussive Massager

I am not much of a review writer so this happens to be my first one.

Why start now, you ask?

Because I finally found a massager that did something that all the other (non percussion) massage products could not.

Let me give you some background about me first.

I am dad and husband first and foremost, but an avid bicyclist most of the rest of the time. I average about 100+ miles per week with an average speed of around 18 – 20 mph.

For the last 2 or 3 years now, my calves have started getting very, tight and painful (and that’s very with a capital V). I’ve had other leg problems through out the years, pulled muscles, shin splints and even a dislocated patella so I thought the tightness in my calves was just part of biking… or getting old – I am 45 years old.

In search of relief I’ve tried many different therapies including hot baths, manual massage, rollers/gadgets and a regular electric massager (not percussive). Though the electric massager felt good, it could not break up the knots in my calves.

I happened to run into a buddy of mine, who is a semi-pro body builder (and on again/off again wrestler) and talked to him about the tightness in my calves.

He told me that he had not had that particular problem but maybe all the swimming he did made the knots go away.

He said calves need to be flexible as this was tantamount (he used the word tantamount) to relieving back pain.

He suggested regular weekly massages (and maybe some swimming), which sounded like a great idea but at $60 bucks a pop and three kids to feed was a very unlikely solution.

I know there are machines out there dedicated to feet and calves, but the reach on them is limited and the ones I found didn’t go high enough up my calves… and I am only 5 ‘8 “. In addition to the limitations, they run in the neighborhood of $300 dollars or more.

My first introduction to percussion massage was in a Brookstone catalog, percussive massage… interesting concept.

I did a little homework on percussive massage, and found much to read about but not much was ever said about calves and percussion massagers. Some of the websites even had videos, but none of them demonstrated the massager addressing the calves.

Reading reviews from Amazon and other massage forums it was clear to see that Thumper massagers came out ahead in just about every category as the best one for the money.

It got to the point where I was in pain just walking around the house so in a last ditch effort to avoid going to the doctor or some kind of sports physical therapist, I bought the Thumper Sport.

Long story short, it’s amazing.

I’ve owned it for about a month now and I have to admit that the first couple of days of use seemed to produce no lasting results but boy did it feel good.

After about a week I noticed an appreciable difference in the flexibility (and pain level) of my calves and after about two weeks of using this percussive massager every day the pain in my lower legs totally stopped and my calves became flexible again.

It’s still hard to believe that after years of pain and loss of mobility (I couldn’t point my toes straight down) percussive massage was all I needed.

The Thumper massager is awesome and I will continue using it – forget the regular massager… total waste of money.

I use my Sport religiously, every 2 days for about 10 minutes on my feet, calves, thighs, back and even the palms of my hands.

You may be surprised to find an article on Down syndrome and sexuality as few doctors bring this up and it is not often included in the typical prognosis and diagnosis of Down syndrome. You shouldn’t be surprised, however.

Common perceptions are that people with disabilities do not have either interest or ability for the adult relationships the rest of us take for granted. This is, however, completely false.

People with Down syndrome go through puberty just like everyone else, and they have the same feelings and desires as everyone else. This is nothing to be afraid of, however. With a little education tailored to their particular needs, adults with Down syndrome can learn to be smart about their sexuality and learn how to minimize the risk of dangerous situations.

1. Sexuality is a Part of Everyone’s Life

When we talk about sexuality and Down syndrome, we are not just talking about teenagers and adults. All humans go through many different stages of sexual development, starting when they are babies.

The first stage is to develop emotional bonds with parents and family members. School age kids deal with the beginnings of modesty and the desire for privacy. Of course, adolescents enter puberty and start feeling sexual desire. It is nothing to be ashamed of, but proper education needs to be given to teenagers with Down syndrome to make sure they know how to handle these feelings in an appropriate way.

2. The Decline of Institutionalization Led to More Opportunities for People with Down Syndrome

Up until the 1960s and 1970s, people with Down syndrome were most often institutionalized in single sex buildings, and did not have much opportunity to interact with the opposite sex at all. Now, people with Down syndrome have independence and opportunities available to them, and it only follows that they should also want what is available to all other members of society – the right to develop and pursue meaningful relationships.

3. Additional Difficulties Exist for People with Down Syndrome in Relation to Sexuality

There are, of course, added difficulties when we talk about people with Down syndrome and sexuality. It is probably obvious that there is a lot more prejudice towards people with Down syndrome who engage in sexual behavior.

Parents have a lot more anxiety about it, too. There is good reason for this anxiety, unfortunately. People with Down syndrome have cognitive deficits that make them more likely to be a victim to sexual abuse, unwanted pregnancies, or sexually transmitted diseases. Women especially are vulnerable to issues of abuse and exploitation. They may not know the difference between “good touch” and “bad touch”. They may not know how to say no if something is making them uncomfortable. They may be lonely and willing to put up with inappropriate behavior in order to get attention.

The isolation and issues with communication that many with Down syndrome face may make it harder for them to access sources of support that will help them make decisions that are right for them.

4. There Are Ways to Prevent Exploitation and Abuse

The best way to help young people with Down syndrome be smart about their sexuality is to start educating them when they are still young. Sexual education for kids with Down syndrome should start in junior high, and should focus on personal safety.

Kids should be taught the difference between good touch and bad touch, and how to “just say no” to advances or touching they don’t want. A concept called “Circles” can be used for older or more cognitively advanced kids. Circles represent different levels of personal relationship and intimacy. Students learn what the appropriate touching behaviors are for each level. They then learn that sometimes a friend might want to be closer than they want, in which case they have to tell them very clearly “STOP.”

Sex education should be individualized for each student with Down syndrome depending on their ability to understand the material. It is important, however, to cover all the things that would normally be covered in sex ed, because chances are, teenagers with Down syndrome will need to know these things sooner rather than later, in order to keep themselves safe.

The more you talk openly and honestly with your Down syndrome teenager or young adult about sexuality, the safer they will be. The more they understand, the better you will both feel about this aspect of their lives.

Dating is also something that teenagers with Down syndrome will often want to try out for themselves. There are certain social skills required to be able to date, and these skills can be taught if needed.

5. People with Down Syndrome Can Get Married.

Marriage is by no means common for people with Down syndrome, but it is still growing increasingly more common. Many scoff at the idea, and wonder how two people who still need aides to function in the world could live together and manage household tasks, but it can be done.

The Wall Street Journal did an article addressing some of the issues in marriages with Down syndrome.

“There is a growing sense of the need to catch up, with junior highs and high schools starting to offer sex-education and social skills courses tailored to teens with Down syndrome and other cognitive disabilities. “There is no reason to think that they have a different libido,” says William I. Cohen, who runs the Down syndrome Center of Western Pennsylvania at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. “They want what we all want: friendship, companionship, love.” (“A Young Woman Plans Her Wedding,” Amy Marcus, Wall Street Journal, October 2005)

Marcus also reports on a discussion one young woman with Down syndrome had with her mother on her upcoming marriage to another young man with Down syndrome:

“At one point, she raised the issue with her daughter: Didn’t she worry that after they married, Ms. Bergeron might have to take care of Mr. Desai?

“Don’t you take care of Daddy? Doesn’t Sujeet’s mother take care of her husband? Isn’t that what wives do?” her mother says Ms. Bergeron responded. “She put me in my place,” Mrs. Bergeron said. “I backed off.”

Fertility Issues

Most males with Down syndrome are infertile (although not all). Most females have reduced fertility but are still quite fertile. It will be important to teach the couple about how to use birth control responsibly.

Romantic love and relationships can be a wonderful thing. There is no reason why people with Down syndrome should have to miss out on one of life’s biggest perks, especially when they are biologically and psychologically capable of it. You just need to take some extra precautions to make sure your loved one with Down syndrome is prepared by educating them on sexuality and for all that this might entail.

The Turbinates: What You Should Know

Most people know about the septum and sinuses when it comes to breathing, but not many people (even most doctors) know about the nasal turbinates. Turbinates are like wings along the sidewalls of your nasal cavity, opposite your midline nasal septum. There are three paired structures: the inferior, middle and superior turbinates. Your sinus passageways drain from underneath the middle turbinates. Swollen turbinates are probably responsible for most cases of nasal congestion.

The turbinates are bony on the inside and surrounded by a mucous membrane covering, with a very rich vascular tissue in between. The vascular tissue can engorge significantly, like what occurs with the penis. Any degree of inflammation, irritation or infection can aggravate turbinate swelling. Allergies are a common cause. Even weather changes such as temperature, pressure or humidity fluctuations can aggravate turbinate swelling. In many instances patients are told by their medical doctors that they have nasal polyps, when in fact, it’s a very enlarged turbinate that’s seen.

Sometimes it’s difficult to tell whether a swollen structure is a turbinate or a polyp. A polyp is a protuberance of mucous membrane that grows beyond the normal tissue boundaries. Most nasal polyps originate from underneath the middle turbinates where the sinuses drain, but polyps can also occur anywhere in the nose, including on the turbinates.

Turbinate Trivia

One important feature of the turbinates that not too many people know about is what’s called the nasal cycle. The turbinates alternate in size from side to side every few hours. One side shrinks and the other side swells. Normally you won’t notice this, unless both your turbinates are somewhat congested. If you have a deviated septum, then you’ll notice this more.

Gravity also affects the size of your nasal turbinates. When you lay down, blood pools in the vessels, leading to slight engorgement. However, your involuntary nervous system detects this relative change and automatically constricts your blood vessels to improve breathing. The same process occurs when you exercise—due to activation of the sympathetic nervous system, the turbinates shrink, opening up your breathing passageways.

Sometimes, the balance between the two halves of the involuntary nervous system(the sympathetic and parasympathetic parts) is out of alignment, and this automatic mechanism doesn’t work properly. So when you lay down or exercise, the vessels don’t constrict fully. Other times, the turbinates become extra sensitive to allergies, weather changes, chemicals, scents or odors. Once it’s irritated, an inflammatory reaction occurs which leads to engorgement and production of mucous. This is called vasomotor or nonallergic rhinitis. Throat acid reflux has been shown to be associated with this condition.

Ultimately, how well you breathe through your nose is determined by a combination of the size of your turbinates, your septal geometry, and the how flimsy your nostrils are. (See the other sections on the septum and flimsy nostrils.) Your nose is not just a passive tube that acts a channel for air to pass into the lungs—it’s a very dynamic structure, able to change minute by minute.

What You Must Know About Turbinate Surgery

If you’ve tried all the conservative options for treating your allergies or nasal congestion, and surgery is the only option left, there are a few very important facts that you must know before undergoing any type of turbinate surgery. Decades ago, surgeons use to remove significant amounts or completely the lower nasal turbinates. Initially, patients would breathe much better, but years later would complain of either a dry nose or a constantly runny nose and even a return of nasal congestion. Paradoxically, when you look into these patient’s noses, the nasal cavity would be wide open. The is called the empty nose syndrome (ENS).

We now know that turbinates are a vital part of your nasal anatomy and functioning, and you need a certain amount of nasal resistance to perceive and benefit from proper breathing.

There are a variety of options for shrinking nasal turbinates, from more conservative to more aggressive. The simplest procedure that can be performed in the office is an intramural cautery procedure. This is where a needle or a probe is placed underneath the mucous membranes and the blood vessels are either cauterized or vaporized. With time, the scar tissue that’s created shrinks and tightens the turbinate soft tissues. You’ll see various names such as radio-frequency or Somnoplasty. One recent variation called Coblation uses radiofrequency energy to vaporize tissues at relatively low temperatures. All these procedures have the advantage that they can be performed in the office, and no cutting or excising of the mucous membrane is involved.

The remaining procedures are usually performed in the operating room, under local or general anesthesia. There are many ways that surgeons modify, shrink, de-bulk, or excise parts of the turbinate. The previously mentioned in-office procedures can be performed along with any other procedures, such as a septoplasty or sinus surgery. The simplest way is to physically cut the front-lower portion of the turbinate off using scissors or electrocautery. Sometimes the deep bony parts are removed as well. Complete inferior turbinate resections are rarely performed anymore due to the possible risk of the “empty nose syndrome.”

Another popular method is called a sub-mucous resection (meaning the any deep bone, cartilage or tissue is removed, leaving behind the overlying mucous membrane). For the turbinates, an incision is made lengthwise along the lower portion of the inferior turbinate, and the bone is exposed and a portion removed.

The mucous membrane layers are replaced and pressed down onto the raw bony bed with soft nasal packing. A more recent way of doing this without making an incision is to use what’s called a suction microdebrider. This device has been used for years in sinus surgery. The tip of a long thin rod with an open end has a rotating blade which oscillates back and forth, while simultaneously applying a vacuum to suction out whatever tissues is removed (either soft tissue or bone).

What To Expect After Surgery

Most surgeons still use nasal packing, especially with the more aggressive procedures, to keep the mucous membrane layer pressed against the raw surfaces. Since turbinate procedures are usually performed alongside septal procedures, nasal packing with or without splints are more common than not. Depending on surgeon preference, packing may or may not be used for some of the minimally invasive procedures.

Turbinate procedures by themselves are not considered painful. Most patients don’t take any pain medications, unless other procedures are performed simultaneously.

It may take anywhere from days to weeks before your breathing improves significantly, since there will be swelling, blood and mucous immediately after the procedure. Many surgeons clean out this debris a few days to a week after the procedure in the office during follow-up.

Nasal saline can be applied every few hours just after the surgery to loosen the secretions. Blowing your nose is discouraged until you get the go ahead from your surgeon during the first post-op visit.

Turbinate surgery is a very useful procedure that can be done alone or in combination with other procedures. Bleeding and infection, although rare, can occur, just like any other surgical procedure. There can be anesthesia risks as well. In the rare chance that the procedure fails, reasons for failure include too conservative of a procedure, persistent nasal septal deviation, or nasal valve collapse.

The Meaning of the Rose From St Therese

Lately, since I have gotten my own roses from St. Therese, I have been curious about what a sign given to us by a saint really means. Does it mean that God will grant our wish, or perhaps that our prayers have only gained submission and they are yet to be considered? The answer to this question can be quite complex, and we must always remember that God’s ways are above ours, and that our job is not to understand Him first but to accept His decision with trust that He always wants the best for us.

From an early age, St.Therese was drawn to many different vocations. She wanted to become a doctor, a priest, a saint, an apostle, a martyr, and only after long hours of prayer did she discover that the foundation of all these vocations is love. Essentially, she realized, she wanted to profess love, spread love, and work through love, not for herself, but for all mankind and for God’s glory. She realized that love was her vocation. She noticed that God loves us tremendously, yet only a few of us show love to Him, yet our love is the only thing He desires from us. So, to make up for what we lack and to make God’s heart happy, she offered herself as the martyr who made all possible sacrifices to show love for God there where we did not. She never denied any hard work, never refused any task, and never turned away from any opportunity to show sympathy, understanding and kindness; she was good where we were bad, kind where we were impatient and judgmental. She did everything to show God that men were capable of loving Him, and that His teachings did not fall on deaf ears and cold hearts. For her all was and still is love, all stems from love, and even now, after her death, she is ready to make tremendous sacrifices for love and in the name of love. That is why she received the title: Doctor Amoris.

As she was nearing death and slowly succumbing to her disease, Therese said: “After my death, I will let fall a shower of roses. I will spend my heaven doing good upon earth… My mission is to make God loved… ” And her mission is to make God loved here on earth. But how can she do that? How can she draw us closer to God, make us open our hardened hearts to Him all on her own?

As a saint, she has a wonderful and God-given power: she can intercede on our behalf by praying to God that He grant our wishes. And indeed it is with this shower of roses that she decided to signal that she is praying to God, and that God is responding favourably to our prayer. However, we must remember that St. Therese can only intercede, but she cannot grant our wishes herself. Everything is God’s decision, and everything is up to His divine approval. In order to be granted, our wishes have to fit into His divine plans. Therefore, St. Therese “boldly declared she would take her roses before God in heaven for His blessing before she would shower them upon the earth. Everything is subject to His discretion.” (Ficocelli, E. “A Shower of Heavenly Roses”, p 26) And when our wishes do fit into His Divine plans, when we gained His goodwill, he allows St. Therese to signal His loving approval to us with a rose. Therefore, the roses we receive as the answer to our prayers come directly from God, and St. Therese is our lovely divine messenger. It is a “physical, tangible thing to guide a person as to what God’s will is in a situation” (Ficocelli, E. “A Shower of Heavenly Roses”, p 143), and as such, receiving such a rose is an overwhelmingly emotional experience. After all, a divine messenger left it for us as a sign of hope and a sign of God’s love for us, of His divine intention to say yes to our request, and as well as a sign of St. Therese’s devotion to us and her promise. When we receive the rose, we feel encouraged, even though, we would need no signs to have trust and faith; nonetheless, being human, seeing something that we can process with our intelligence encourages us, makes us feel loved and cared for. And once we see such a loving sign, indeed a sign of hope, encouragement and mercy sent by God, we draw closer to Him, open our hearts to Him, feel an overwhelming love for Him, that He, in His greatness, looks at us, understands our pain, knows us by name and has mercy on us. This is what the rose means; St. Therese is praying with all her might and heart for us, and that God is granting our wish because He can never deny anything from His favourite.

The rose makes us gravitate towards God. Suddenly we feel His presence, and we feel that we truly are His creations, the one He loves the most, and by whom He also wants to be loved, deeply and trustingly and with complete abandonment. In the face of such love for us, we want to lift our heart to Him, snuggle in His cape, be one with Him. One simple rose evokes the deepest and most moving feelings for our Father. As Angel Elemiah instructs us to say: “When I will understand, when I will know, when your secret face will be revealed to me, my love -great and immense – like an arrow will fly to you.”(Haziel, “Le Grand Livre des Invocations et Exhortations, p 45) What a beautiful expression: the rose is God’s secret face revealed.

With the rose, St. Therese is signaling to us when she is “doing something good upon earth”. She is doing good on earth because she is making us happy by letting us know that our wish is taken seriously and that the solution we have asked for is in the making and will soon present itself in our lives. She is also doing good because feeling God’s love so strongly, we also feel a surge of love within us for Him and a humble admission of guilt for all those times when we thought that He abandoned us. Now, with this one rose, we feel important again, and we feel inspired to show our love and great attachment to our Father who never abandons us.

This rose is a visible and undeniable sign we so often crave in times of trouble and unrest. It is a sign of hope that instantly restores our internal harmony and balance. We feel loved, and we love in return. This is what St. Therese wanted. For her love is the foundation of everything, the sentiment without which life is not possible. The rose is like a rose we receive from a lover: it is given to us to let us know that we are valued and that our happiness matters, and we love our lover for such a wonderful gesture. The channels are open, and love flows.

The Rose is also a sign of St. Therese’s love for us. She never turned away from praying hard to God on our behalf and from reaching all the way down into the thorny thickets to pluck out our rose. She chose to suffer for love; love for us, and for God, to make God loved here on earth. St. Therese’s intercession is rooted in love. She spends her time in Heaven making sacrifices for God and for us, so that love between God and us may flow freely and abundantly, and we are reassured of each other’s devotion.
