What’s the Difference Between Stretch Marks and Varicose Veins?

Cosmetic blemishes can be quite unpleasant for many individuals, and may lead some to feel embarrassed and self-conscious. Not surprisingly, many who are beginning to notice certain cosmetic blemishes seek treatment to find relief. The first step in determining the appropriate course of treatment, however, is identifying the problem and diagnosing the condition. Varicose veins and stretch marks are two fairly common conditions that women may experience during or after pregnancy, but others may experience these blemishes as well.

Varicose veins may be more than merely a blemish, however. These may lead to feelings of pain and heaviness in the legs, which may make this venous condition a medical concern for some. The types of veins appear bluish or purplish in color, and are distinguished from spider veins by the bulging appearance of the veins. The bulging is due to the pooling of blood in the vein, which is a result of inefficiencies in the valves within the veins that allow blood to flow backwards. They may be quite unsightly and many seek treatment to alleviate their symptoms or to remove or destroy them altogether.

Stretch marks are not a vein condition, but rather appear pink, reddish or purplish and may be indented in the skin. They may appear on the abdomen, the arms, the buttocks, thighs or the breasts. They may end up fading over time, and they are not a medical concern in and of themselves, but they may be indicative of certain medical conditions like Cushing’s syndrome or other problems. Treatment may be available to reduce their appearance, but they may not successfully remove them completely.

By the end of pregnancy, many women develop stretch marks as the stretching of the skin and certain hormonal causes may play a role in their development. These kind of veins may also be present in pregnant women as pregnancy increases the amount of blood in the body, but may decrease blood flow from the legs to the pelvis region. This helps support the developing baby, but may lead women to experience varicose veins. Hormonal changes may also play a role in the development of varicose veins during pregnancy.

Fortunately, there are several treatments available to get rid of varicose veins such as sclerotherapy and laser procedures such as endovenous laser ablation, although varicose they may go away on their own without the use of medical treatments or procedures a few months after delivering the baby.

Water Purification for Large Water Storage Tanks on Domestic and Commercial Vehicles

Water purification tablets are utilised for a number of different uses including emergency water purification in developing countries, military operations and for travellers unsure of the cleanliness of unfamiliar water supplies. For many though, water purification tablets are essential to keep their vehicle water storage tanks clean and free of bacteria. This refers to both commercial vehicles such as ships and trains as well domestic vehicles like motor homes and narrow boats.

Maintaining a clean water tank is essential for both commercial and domestic vehicles. Owners of caravans and canal boats will want to make sure that their water tanks are purified for the health of their family and guests. Commercial vehicle companies have a duty of care to their customers and must provide and manage a clean water tank as part of their service.

There are several different types of water purification tablets out there which all offer different levels of purification / disinfection depending on which amount of available chlorine is in each particular tablet. The amount of available chlorine in each tablet usually depends on the weight / size of each tablet.

There are several different types / brands of water purification tablets on the market with Oasis water purification tablets and Aquatabs being the most popular. For the purpose of this article, I will focus on how the range of Oasis tablets can be used to benefit those with vehicle water storage tanks.

For the purification of large, commercial water tanks Oasis 3000 tablets are probably best suited. Oasis 3000 tablets are available in tubs of 100 and each tablet weighs 9.7gms. The available chlorine in each of these tablets is very large compared to other effervescent chlorine tablets. The available chlorine (parts per million) in one litre of water when using one Oasis 3000 tablet is 3000 (you only need 10 available chlorine, parts per million for purification of a standard tank).

Oasis water purification tablets help to eliminate dangerous pathogenic bacteria as well as a number of diseases such as cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio. These tablets rid the water of bacteria which commercial vehicles would be well advised to purify such as spores, fungi, viruses, cysts and algae.

Vehicle water tanks require regular purification and disinfection. For standard tank purification, the user will require a tablet with 10 parts per million available chlorine (when dissolved in 1 litre of water). The tablet will need to be in the water for ten minutes to fully purify. Tank disinfection requires a stronger concentration of chlorine (50 parts per million) and should be carried out occasionally to ensure a fully clean tank.

The amount of tablets that you need to use is dependent on the size of the tank which you have. For smaller tanks such as 500 litre tanks, you will require just 1.6 Oasis 3000 tablets to purify the tank. For a larger tank, like an 8000 litre tank, you will require 26.6 of these tablets to purify the water.

There are other ranges of tablets that are specifically used as disinfection tablets such as Oasis Plus tablets and others which are for small, personal use like standard Oasis tablets.

For the purification of a vehicle water tank, you may also want to try other effervescent chlorine tablets that are suitable for use with large tanks and bacteria and legionella test kits.

Causes of Lower Back Pain and Hip Pain

One thing in common we all have is that someday we all have some sort of lower back pain. Usually a bump, bruise or accident will cause the lower back pain. These are usually mild cases and only require treatment that is very easy to do.

Others will find they have back pain and don’t know what caused the pain and there is no way to control the occurrence of the pain. Spinal conditions are a reason for back pain and many are born with this condition. The sooner you can find the source of the pain, the sooner you and your doctor can treat that back pain and hopefully reduce or eliminate the back pain for good.

Consider these things if you are under 60 years old Age and lower back pain do play a role. Older people, usually those over 60, are categorized into a separate group. They often suffer from conditions such as arthritis and other degenerative conditions that are known to cause back pain.

For the people who are under sixty, there are really 3 main group or categories. These are characterized by some common symptoms:

Disc herniation – results in pain and numbness in the legs. Can get worse with long periods of sitting or standing. Degenerative disk disease – this is characterized with pain when making certain moves or specific positions. This can also become chronic and extremely painful. Stress fractures – pain when walking or standing and this can be very painful also. Information for the older people One common cause of pain for the elderly is osteoarthritis. This health condition leads to stiffness and usually is worse in morning or evening.

Another type or cause for the elderly is lumbar spinal stenosis. What happens is there is pressure put on the nerves of the spine and usually will cause pain in the legs. Low back pain by disc degeneration is also common.

Muscles around and supporting the discs go into a spasm causing chronic back pain. Mechanical pain is common because the disc that is degenerating is becoming inflamed. By replacing the bad disc with an artificial one you help relieve the pain associated with degenerative disc disease.

Less know conditions for low back pain Some of the lesser known conditions of low back pain make it more difficult to diagnose therefore making it more difficult to treat.

Causes of lower back pain:

Infection Spinal tumor Fibromygalia Sacroiliac joint syndrome Piriformis syndrome Sciatica Poly neuropathy All of these can be causes of low back pain, even though they are more uncommon. They still can be treated, when diagnosed correctly.

A reason to be happy By determining the cause of your low bac and hip pain, you can find relief and treatment to start toward recovery. Understanding how to prevent and treat the back pain can definitely make you happy.

Have you got lower back pain? Think how great it would feel to be back pain free. Download our FREE manuscript showing you how to rid yourself of back pain. Also, showing you ways to get rid of neck and upper thoracic pain too.

Top 6 Causes of Diarrhea in the Elderly

Many elderly folks suffer from the occasional battle with diarrhea without ever knowing what caused it. While it’s generally just an uncomfortable annoyance that only lasts a day or two, it can become a more serious situation when it ends up causing incontinence.

Severe or chronic diarrhea is cause for concern and is a situation that requires medical attention. It can be a symptom of colon cancer, diabetes, fecal blockage, infection or other serious medical problem. Loss of fluids can lead to potentially life threatening dehydration, so it’s something to pay close attention to. Get immediate medical attention for your elder should diarrhea be accompanied by stomach cramps or fever.

The 6 most common causes of diarrhea include:

1. Your elder eating too much dietetic candy or chewing too much dietetic gum.

2. Eating or drinking foods like apple and pear juice, or grapes, prunes, dates, figs and some nuts.

3. Drinking caffeinated products such as soda, coffee or tea. Some over the counter antacids containing magnesium as well as some over the counter headache remedies can also cause diarrhea as well.

4. Certain medications such as antibiotics. Some can cause an imbalance of the “good” bacteria in the intestines.

5. Drinking milk, eating ice cream or other dairy products. While this generally applies to those who are lactose intolerant, this isn’t always the case.

6. Certain medical conditions such as Chron’s disease, overactive thyroid or ulcerative colitis.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, diarrhea in elderly folks isn’t all that uncommon. When it runs more than a day or two, it’s time to consider contacting your elder’s doctor so they can investigate further. And remember, if there is pain or vomiting present with the diarrhea, be sure and get your elder immediate medical attention. Doing so may just save their life.

Is Anything Safe To Eat?

If you listened to everything the so-called ‘experts’ and doom merchants of diet had to say about food, you’d never eat again.

During the last few years just about everything we eat has been labeled as ‘dangerous’.

Even foods that generations have regarded as essential part of a good, daily diet have been under suspicion.

But what’s the real truth?

Just how good or bad are the basic everyday foods we eat? What are the real risks?

Here are the facts…

Milk: Full-cream milk is dangerous fill of fat. Drink too much and you will dramatically increase your chances of having a heart attack or a stroke. Milk can also cause allergy problem – especially among children.

Facts: You can buy skimmed or semi skimmed milks which contain far less fat and are, therefore, far less dangerous. Milk also contains calcium which helps to keep ones strong. For babies, it is the chief source of protein.

Note: If you drink milk everyday, or use it in the preparation of dishes, make sure it’s skimmed.

Butter: Rich in saturated animal fats, butter is a major cause of heart disease and other circulatory problems.

Facts: You don’t need butter at all. It contains small quantities of Vitamins A and D but you can get these from other foods. Choose instead from low fat spreads which do the same job as butter more safely and more cheaply.

Note: Use butter sparingly as an occasional treat may be.

Cheese: Hard cheeses, such as parmesan and stilton, are rich in fat. But soft, French Cheeses such as brie and camembert, which are low in fat, can be rich sources of infective organisms such as listeria.

Facts: All cheeses contain a wonderful range of vitamins and minerals plus good, essential protein. And low fat cheddar cuts out the health risks.

Note: Buy low fat, low calorie cheeses such as cottage cheese and Edam. Pregnant women, children and elderly should avoid soft cheeses such as brie and camembert. To stay slim and avoid heart trouble, look for low fat version of your favorite cheese.

Yoghurt: The recent botulism scare frightened many westerners off yoghurt. But a bigger problem is caused by the fact that mass marketed yoghurts are rich in fat and calories.

Facts: ‘Live’ or ‘active’, natural unsweetened yoghurt is a high protein, low fat food which aids digestion and can help protect you against many kinds of infections.

Note: Natural, unsweetened yoghurt is an excellent food. Mix in chopped, fresh fruit to make a nourishing and healthy dessert.

Sugar: Full of calories but empty of goodness. You probably eat more than you think. Manufacturers add sugar to just about everything – from soup (to improve the texture) to tinned meat (to keep it soft). Too much sugar will increase your risk of suffering from tooth decay. Scientists have also linked a high sugar intake to cancers of the breast and intestine.

Facts: Sugar is a good source of instant energy – useful if you’re feeling exhausted or need a quick ‘lift’. Naturally occurring sugars – in honey, for example do contain contains vitamins and minerals. Artificial sweeteners are now available if you can’t drink unsweetened tea or coffee.

Note: Make a real effort to cut down your sugar intake. Look at food labels and buy unsweetened products whenever possible (you’ll be astonished to see ho many products contain sugar – even some varieties of baked beans!). Use artificial sweeteners instead of sugar in drinks and my low calorie soft drinks.

When you buy fresh fruit juice, make sure you ask for it unsweetened. Fruits have enough of natural sugars to satisfy your taste buds.

Potatoes: By themselves potatoes are great. But cook them (as chips) in animal fat or mash them with butter and you turn a healthy food into a health hazard.

Facts: Potatoes are a fantastic food source – full of vitamins and fiber. Potatoes are a good source of energy which gives carbohydrates for children. Bake them in their skin and get the best out of them.

Note: If you must have chips, brush the potato slices very lightly in oil and bake them.

Bread: The white sliced oaf is so tasteless that you have to smear butter on it to make it edible. Also, it is low in fiber.

Facts: Most bakers now stock an excellent range of tasty breads. Bread is rich in protein, Vitamins and fiber.

Note: Whole meal bread is best.

Salt: If you have high blood pressure – or you have a family history of high blood pressure you should keep your salt intake low. Many women who suffer from fluid retention or pre-menstrual syndrome would suffer less if they cut their salt intake. This isn’t always easy since many tinned and packaged foods come with added salt.

Facts: Most manufacturers now label their food – so you can see at glance which contains salt. To determine the about (of salt) in ready foods, a good rule of thumb is to see how high up in the list of ingredients it comes. In general, the higher the list, the more the quantity is.

Note: If you find food without salt tasteless, try other flavoring such as lemon juice, vinegar or garlic.

Eggs: The main problem with eggs is hat they are so rich in cholesterol that they can be a heart hazard. There is also a risk of salmonella infection, although it is some what exaggerated.

Facts: You can reduce your risk of infection my avoiding cracked eggs and dishes made with raw eggs. Eggs contain nothing you can’t get from other sources, so you don’t have to eat them.

Note: Adults should limit themselves to two or three eggs a week beaus of the cholesterol content. Eggs are an important source of protein for young children, but make sure they have them cooked, not raw.

Red Meat: Most read meat is rich in fat and doctors have linked red meat to heart disease and cancer. Other disease known to be associated with eating too much red meat include: high blood pressure, indigestion, varicose veins, strokes, piles, gallstones, gout, diabetes and constipation.

Facts: Meat is rich in protein and iron.

Note: Eat red meat no more than once or twice a week at most. Reduce the risk by choosing lean cuts. White meat, like chicken, is also an excellent source of protein. Just make sure you trim off the skin that’s where most of the chicken fat lurks.

Coffee: More than 3-4 cups a day will make your heart beat faster and send your blood pressure sky high. Coffee can keep you awake and make you depressed. It can cause headaches, anxiety and irritability.

Facts: It’s the cheapest and most effective stimulant you can buy legally. If you’re feeling drowsy, a cup of coffee will revive you quickly. Coffee will also help revive mild attacks of asthma.

Note: Use it cautiously. Coffee is a powerful drug. It has also been linked, although not, conclusively, to raised cholesterol.

Peptic Ulcer and Its Complications

Some of the peptic ulcers may heal without treatment, spontaneously. But if they complicate the whole situation is severe, there may appear ulcer bleeding, ulcer perforation, and gastric obstruction. Ulcer bleeding manifests as: melena or black stools, weakness, orthostatic syncope, hematemesis meaning blood vomiting. Treatment may be the rapid replacement of the lost fluids on venous line, even blood transfusion in more severe cases. To establish the exact portion of the affected mucous and the bleeding spot upper endoscopy is performed and the bleeding may be stopped with the aid of heated instruments.

If the ulcer is perforated the gastric contents are leaked in the peritoneal cavity and results in acute peritonitis. Those cases are very severe and surgery is required immediately, because the abdomen muscles become rigid and any motion determines extreme abdominal pain.

If gastric obstruction occurs near the pyloric canal which joins the stomach to the duodenum the patient reports increasing abdominal pain, diminished appetite, vomiting of undigested or partially digested food and weight loss. Upper endoscopy is recommended to exclude the gastric cancer as a cause of obstruction. If the gastric contents are evacuated from the stomach and cimetidine and ranitidine are administered intravenously the gastric obstruction is resolved. Patients with persistent obstruction require surgery.

First of all prevention is very important reducing cigarettes and non-inflammatory steroids drugs, to relieve pain there are administrated antiacids such as: Maalox, Mylanta, and Amphojel, but watch out ulcers frequently return when you cease taking the antiacids medication. Histamine antagonists are cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac), nizatidine (Axid), and famotidine (Pepcid) are effective in the healing of ulcers because that reduce the acid output but ulcers return when this medication is stopped. Patients may experience during the treatment: hallucinations, headache, confusion, lethargy. Cimetidine and ranitidine should?t be taken in combination with alcohol, anyway those doses must be adjusted and monitored.

Asomeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid), pantoprazole (Protonix), esomeprazole (Nexium), and rabeprazole (Aciphex) are proton-pump inhibitors are used in the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers and esophageal ulcers. They have no side effects even after long time using them and do not affect the digestion and absorption. Sucralfate and misoprostol promotes healing and protects the lining against acid attacks, Cytotec protects the lining from the effect of non-inflammatory steroids drugs. One of the adverse reactions of Cytotec is miscarriage. More studies suggest the use of combined antibiotics, tetracycline, amoxicillin, metronidazole (Flagyl), clarithromycin (Biaxin), and levofloxacin to eradicate H. Pylori. By elminating H. Pylori bacteria you will decrease the risk of gastric cancer in the future and the return of ulcer. There are no suficient proves that intake of coffee and alcohol determines peptic ulcers, dietary restrictions and bland diets may not have the expected result.

The Shocking Causes of Gynecomastia

If you’ve ever looked around at different men’s bodies, you probably noticed that some of them have breasts that are larger than normal. Realizing this may seem a little strange at first, because overdeveloped male breasts are usually only associated with females. However, it is incorrect to assume that only overweight men suffer from “man boobs.” Although obesity can certainly be a contributing factor, there are many more causes of gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia is basically an enlargement of male breast tissue. It is important to distinguish this affliction from pseudo-gynecomastia, which is caused by fat deposits around the entire chest area.

There still is no conclusive medical evidence or study that can point to a singular cause of gynecomastia. However, the problem seems to occur quite often during puberty and old age, likely as a result of changes in the body’s hormonal make-up. When male breast tissue develops during puberty, it usually goes away by itself over time. But for many others it doesn’t go away or continues to develop, especially when it occurs as a result of aging.

It is actually quite normal to witness unusual breast growth during male puberty. The abnormal breast growth usually takes place in one breast or in both. A small lump often develops underneath your nipple, which can be tender to the touch. This is nothing serious and shouldn’t be anything to worry about because it usually only lasts for a few months or years, and eventually disappears as your body’s hormone levels balance out.

This problem can also occur as a result of natural aging. It typically develops around the age of 50 and onwards. Gynecomastia is a rather common occurrence due to changes in hormonal balance.

Other causes of gynecomastia are diseases that affect the liver, kidney failure, tumors, leprosy, leukemia, some genetic disorders, testicular problems, and many others. Other causes can be side effects from certain medications and the use of marijuana. Anabolic steroids are another cause.

Some over the counter medication and prescription drugs can cause the development of “man boobs” as well. These include medicines to treat peptic ulcers, corticosteroids, anti-cancer drugs, and some antidepressants. Fortunately though, the risk of gynecomastia is generally not very high.

However you look at it, the problem of enlarged male breasts is very troublesome and embarrassing. I should know, because I suffered from it my whole life and it dramatically reduced my self-esteem. Fortunately, there are legitimate cures for this affliction. There are natural ways to treat the problem without having to resort to expensive and painful surgery.

I was able to cure my “man boobs” by following a special diet and performing specific exercises that target your chest fat. If you learn how to get rid of your gynecomastia naturally, you will be on your way to finally having that flat chest you’ve always wanted.

"Switch How to Change Things When Change is Hard" by Chip Heath and Dan Heath Business Book Review

Business mavens, Brothers Heath released their new book, entitled, “Switch: How To Change Things When Change Is Hard,” (Broadway, 2010), in February. The authors address change at the individual, organizational, and societal level. Change involves the brain’s emotional and rational side. The Heath brothers identify the overpowering emotional element as the Elephant. The rational, decision-making component is secondary and sits atop the Elephant as the Rider. When conflict between the two exists, the Rider is inherently the underdog. To make lasting change, the Elephant and Rider need to unite. Also key is having clear direction. Following is an example from each of the nine principles contained within the triad to accomplish long-term change. It’s noteworthy that the change framework benefits anyone without a vast amount of authority or resources.

DIRECT THE RIDER-Analytical, Rational Thinking.

Find the Bright Spots. In 1990 an international organization that helps needy children accepted a Vietnamese government invitation to decrease malnutrition. They earned six months to make a difference. The short timeline negated ending poverty, purifying water and building sanitation systems to address starvation. Organizers traveled to a rural village and met with mothers. Despite widespread malnutrition, some children were thriving. Why? The team searched for bright spots-successful efforts worth emulating. They discovered bright spot moms fed their children four times a day (easier on kids’ digestive systems), vs. the standard two. Another finding among several was that bright spot moms added shrimp and crab from the rice paddies into their kids meals. Cooking classes originated with bright spot moms teaching other mothers how to prepare healthy meals for their children. The mothers already had the emotional component (Elephant) – natural concern for their kids. They needed direction (Rider) not motivation. Six months later, 65 percent of the village kids were better nourished and stayed that way.

Script the Critical Moves. Doctors studied a case history of a patient with chronic arthritic hip pain. Their options were to perform drastic hip replacement surgery or administer a single untried medication. They chose the drug 47 percent vs. doing hip surgery. Another doctor set studied a similar case history with two untried drugs presented as a choice. Here, only 28 percent of the doctors chose one of the prescriptions. The remainder selected hip surgery. The study results display decision paralysis. Too many choices tax the Rider’s strength; and it will always revert to the status quo. Change creates uncertainty and ambiguity. Any successful change requires translation of ambiguous goals into concrete behaviors. Script the critical moves (not every move but key moves). In the above studies, the critical directive to “Use invasive options only as a last resort” would have resulted in more physicians choosing the drug option. Clarity dissolves the Rider’s resistance.

Point to the Destination. In the mid 1980s a popular investment firm’s research department ranked an embarrassing fifteenth in its ability to generate revenue for banks. Top executives recruited a new leader who became both GM and coach. He announced that he expected analysts to initiate at least 125 client conversations a month. He promoted a team environment; requiring analysts to cite colleagues’ work at least twice during presentations. He also declared that the firm would crack the premiere investment magazine’s Top 5. He not only scripted the critical moves (make 125 calls, cite colleagues’ work); he also created a destination postcard- a vivid picture from the near-term future that shows what could be possible. In three short years the firm leapfrogged from fifteenth to first place. When you describe a compelling destination you decrease the Rider’s ability to get lost in analysis paralysis.

MOTIVATE THE ELEPHANT-Emotional, Instinctive.

Find the Feeling. In the late 1970s, a state’s Department of Youth Services (DYS), an agency that focuses on delinquent kids; overhauled its operations. Nonprofits including group homes and halfway houses replaced youth prisons. The head of accounting for DYS ruled his division with an iron fist, earning the title of Attila the Accountant. Expense reports submitted with a single mistake like a date omission or miscalculated subtotal were returned to the offending nonprofit for corrections. The organizations operated on a shoestring budget and delayed payments jeopardized their ability to service kids. Frustrated, Attila’s colleagues invited him on a field trip to visit some participating nonprofits. He witnessed firsthand their operational and financial challenges; and returned to the office a changed man. He was still authoritarian but less nitpicky about expense report submissions, allowing the nonprofits to receive their payments faster.

Shrink the Change. A local car wash ran a promotion using loyalty cards. One customer group received an 8-stamp card, earning a free car wash once filled. Another customer set received a 10-stamp card, with 2 stamps already completed, advancing them 20 percent towards their goal. Several months later, only 19 percent of the 8-stamp customers had earned a free car wash, vs. 34 percent of the head-start group, which also earned their free car wash faster. The authors state that people find it more motivating to be partially finished with a long-term goal than to be at the starting gate of a shorter one. How could you rally your family, coworkers, community, etc. to achieve a long-term goal by highlighting what’s already been accomplished towards its completion? To motivate an uninspired Elephant, shrink the change.

Grow Your People. In 1977 the St. Lucia parrot faced extinction. Island natives undervalued the bird, some even eating it as a delicacy. No clear economic case for saving the parrot existed. Conservationists knew an analytical case for protecting the bird would fail. Instead, they implemented an emotional appeal. Their goal was to convince St. Lucians that they were the kind of people who protected their own. They wanted St. Lucians to swell with pride over their exclusive island species. The St. Lucia Parrot Campaign included T-shirts, bumper stickers and locally recorded songs about the parrot. The animal became part of the natives’ national identity. In 2008, conservationists noted that no St. Lucian had been caught shooting the parrot in fifteen years, resurrecting the species from extinction.

SHAPE THE PATH-Provide Clear Direction.

Tweak the Environment. The airline industry abides by the “sterile cockpit” rule. Anytime a plane is below 10,000 feet, either ascending or descending (the most accident-prone times), no conversation other than flight-related is permitted. At 11,000 feet the crew can talk freely. An IT group adopted the sterile cockpit tenet to advance an important software development project. They aimed to reduce new product development time from three years to nine months. They established “quiet hours” Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings before noon. It gave coders a sterile cockpit, allowing them to concentrate on complex bits of code without being interrupted. Ultimately, the group achieved their nine-month development goal. What looks like a people problem is often a situational challenge. People have a systematic tendency to ignore situational forces that shape other people’s behavior. Simple tweaks of the path can produce dramatic behavioral changes.

Build Habits. One of the subtle ways our environment influences us is by reinforcing (or deterring) our habits. Habits are important because they’re behavioral autopilot. They allow good actions to happen “free” without taxing the Rider’s self-control, which is exhaustive. To change yourself or others you need to change habits. Forming a habit involves both environmental and mental influences. “Action triggers” are effective in motivating action. They preload a decision and are most useful in difficult situations when the Rider’s self-control is strained. Action triggers create “instant habits.”

Rally the Herd. A hotel manager tested a new sign in the hotel bathrooms. It simply stated “the majority of guests at the hotel reuse their towels at least once during their stay.” Guests who got the sign were 26 percent more likely to reuse their towels. They took cues from the herd. In ambiguous situations we all look to others for cues about how to behave. Change situations often involve ambiguity along with their inherent unfamiliarity. To change things, you must pay attention to social signals. They can either guarantee a change effort or doom it. Lead an Elephant on an unfamiliar path and it’s likely to follow the herd.

The authors acknowledge that change isn’t always easy. When change works it tends to follow a pattern. People will change with clear direction, ample motivation, and a supportive environment. The Rider, Elephant and Path need to align in support of the switch. Visit the authors at http://www.heathbrothers.com.

The Most Common Causes of Yeast Infection

Adult humans have 3 to 4 pounds of beneficial bacteria, numbering about 70 trillion individual organisms, living in our digestive system. Yeast is present in every one of us. The shear strength in numbers of the beneficial bacteria keeps yeast in check. They are in charge and make yeast produce vitamins, such as the B complex, within our bodies. If this balance is altered by reducing the good bacteria, yeast, being very opportunistic, will spread and take over as a yeast infection or as a fungal parasite or candida (mold), causing a wide variety of unhealthy side effects and diseases.

The most common cause of yeast infection is antibiotics and their overuse

Dr. John Pitt, on Penicillum in 1979 stated: “It is very ironic that this humbled fungus, hailed as a benefactor of mankind, may by its very success prove to be a deciding factor in the decline of the present civilization”.

Simply stated, antibiotics are dangerous mycotoxins, fungal metabolites, that kill bacteria, even the good bacteria that are present in our intestines and essential for good health. This upsets the delicate balance of the yeast to bacteria ratio in your digestive system, giving the yeast fungi the upper hand in creating a yeast infection. Without the good bacteria in your system to control yeast, it spreads and becomes a toxic fungal parasite known as candida.

Penicillin is a good example of a fungal by-product called a mycotoxin. It was discovered from a mold (mold is a fungus) experiment that Dr. Fleming was performing on a bacteria colony. He added some mold from bread to the colony and observed that the fungus killed all the bacteria; producing the substance he later named penicillin. The number one cause of yeast infection was born in 1928 and is so over-prescribed today that yeast infection is a growing epidemic.

Another cause of yeast infection and the destruction of stomach flora are anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen…

These two drugs are common over the counter medications that many people take. Very few people realize what they are doing to their health by taking them. America has become a nation of drug dependent people. Not a night goes by when you don’t see a TV commercial for some kind of drug promising some miraculous cure for something. These drugs all contribute to the destruction of bacteria and are a cause of yeast infection.

Another cause of yeast infection, theorized by some doctors, are birth control pills given to women. In the natural menstrual cycle of women, right after ovulation on about the 18th day, both progesterone and estrogen decline to very low levels. At the same time estradiol begins to rise into menses and then these three hormones return to normal. Most birth control pills contain estradiol in significant amounts and add to this problem.

The hormone link as a cause of yeast infection for women is very common. Almost all women that suffer from recurring vaginal yeast infections will tell you that they do indeed get flare ups at the third week of their cycle. . Fortunately, there are now natural herbs and supplements to treat and balance the hormones to eliminate this problem. Like colloidal silver as a minerals supplement.

According to the 2001 Asthma and Allergy Report, the first immunodeficiency syndrome was identified in 1952. Since that time 95 more have been identified with new conditions being discovered every day. The report also states that increased use of antibiotics in infancy is contributing to increased risks of allergies. What is interesting to me is in the 1950’s antibiotics came into wide spread general use in medicine. Do you see a correlation here?

The most common prescription for antibiotics is for upper respiratory infections, but according to Dr. Carol Kauffman, “most of these infections are caused by a fungus”. So they do not require an antibiotic as treatment, yet doctors continue to prescribe them. This, over time, will alter the balance in stomach bacteria allowing the yeast to overgrow, and the result is candida, or worse. And by using colloidal silver as a mineral supplement it will solve this problem.

Doctors plead ignorance when their patients develop allergies, intestinal disorders, etc, not even realizing that the very drugs they prescribed are the cause of a yeast infection and these other fungal diseases. Over time, your good stomach bacteria become overwhelmed by yeast as it kills even more of your good bacteria. Candida or fungal disease is the result. By using colloidal silver as a mineral supplement for treating yeast infection it will not affect natural flora. Colloidal Silver safely kills over 650 disease-causing bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and molds, has no negative side-effects (the body requires silver for tissue regeneration and promotes the replacement of specialized cells) and is absolutely safe for human consumption.

It becomes a never-ending cycle. You get an antibiotic for your cold or flu; women especially get a vaginal yeast infection. The doctor gives them an anti-fungal or an anti-fungal cream, or they purchase it over the counter at the local drugstore. The infection is beaten for a time, but then it returns. This will continue to happen until the cause of yeast infection is addressed with natural therapies as colloidal silver natural and diet.

In 1998, two scientists Bernstein and Ross discovered that antibiotics “significantly increased risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in humans”.

In studies done on mice in 2000 and published in “Principals and Practices of Infectious Diseases”, a “single injection of streptomycin eradicated the protective effective effect of normal flora”. Streptomycin is prescribed usually for people that are allergic to penicillin and definitely establishes one of the causes of yeast infection to antibiotics.

Now it would be a rare individual that could go through life with never being prescribed an antibiotic. Choose wisely if you really need to take them or not for whatever it is you have at the time, since they are the main cause of yeast infection in humans. Have your doctor prescribe Nystatin with it to avoid the overgrowth of yeast infection. Then get on a good probiotic product such as Total Immune Booster, which actually does grow new bacterial colonies. For several decades, silver has proven itself in the treatment of burns, and eye, ear, nose, throat, vaginal, rectal, and urinary tract infections. Silver has been prescribed as an adjunct treatment for reproductive disorders in women and the circulatory system, as well as a treatment for AIDS infective complications. (For use on the following we reccomend you purchase the colloidal silver as it is smaller and more effective: It has been used as a remedy for allergies, boils, ulcers, lesions, thyroid conditions, infantile diseases, parasites, wounds of the eye, enlarged prostate, warts, bladder inflammation, infections of the inner ear, sleepwalking and anorexia nervosa.) Colloidal Silver also acts as a tissue regenerator by stimulating the production of de-differentiating cells, which promotes the replacement of specialized cells.

The following is a partial list of the more than 650 disease conditions in which colloidal silver has demonstrated proven clinical improvement: Acne, Acne Rosacea, Anthrax Bacilli, Arthritis, Athlete’s Foot, Blood Poisoning, Bladder Infections, Bubonic Plague, Blood Parasites (causes gray hair), Cancer, Candidia (Yeast Infection), Chilbains, Cholera, Chronic Fatigue, Colitis, Conjunctivitis, Cystitis, Dermatitis, Diabetes, Diptheria, Dysentery, Eczema, Fibrositis, Gastritis, Gonorrhea, Hepatitis, Herpes Virus, Hay Fever, Impetigo, Influenza, Keratitis, Leprosy, Leukemia, Lupus, Lyme Disease, Lymphagitis, Malaria, Meningitis, Neurasthenia, Ophthalmia, Pheumonia, Pluerisy, Pruritis Ani, Psoriasis, Pymphagitis, Rheumatism, Rhiritis, Ringworm, Rosacea, Scarlet Fever, Seborrhea, Septicemia, Shingles, Skin Cancer, Staph Infection, Stomach Flu, Strep, Syphilis, Tonsillitis, Toxemia, Trench foot, Trachoma, Tuberculosis, Whooping Cough. It is also used for all bacterial, fungal and viral attacks on plants. Simply spray diluted silver on the leaves and add to soil water.

Foods as a Cause of Yeast Infection

There are many foods that can be a cause of yeast infections but antibiotics are the primary cause of yeast infection due to the fact that they kill beneficial bacteria in the intestines. This allows the yeast and fungi to take control and proliferate in the human body. Antibiotics are also present in many common foods that most of us eat. More recently antibiotics are now being detected in the water supply from our overuse. The wastewater enters the sewer system, which is then treated, and pumped right back into the water table. The antibiotics are never removed and it becomes a never-ending circle.

How do these antibiotics get in our foods?

The most common foods that can be a cause of yeast infections in America are beef and dairy. The livestock industry gives antibiotics to their cattle, this is supposed to kill bad bacteria and make the food supply safer. But they are also used to fatten up cows. A fat cow will sell more than a thin cow, won’t it? These antibiotics are getting into the dairy product food chain. They are present in milk, cheese, and the meat itself. This is creating antibiotic resistance in humans and bad bacteria, not to mention the long-term health effects to our children, and it ultimately destroys the beneficial bacteria in our intestines allowing a yeast infection to grow in your body.

They also shove these cows into unnatural feeding environments and fatten them up with grain foods that can be a cause of yeast infections, making the meat unfit for human consumption due to mold contamination. The meat can become loaded with mycotoxins from these molds. You eat it, and it is passed on to you.

Other foods that can be a cause of yeast infections are grain foods. Wheat, oats, barley, rye, sorghum, corn, red apples, and peanuts are also universally contaminated with fungus. These foods find their way into our systems from cereals, pastas, breads, potato chips, crackers, peanut butter, cooking oils, etc.

How can this be, you wonder? Grains are usually stored in silos for extended periods of time. They can be stored for years before they are ever sold and brought to market for food processing. During this time, they grow molds in these silos. Now I would assume when they go to process these grains for human consumption they would wash them, but the molds and mycotoxins will enter into the inside of the grain as they try to break them down into dirt. The grains get ground up for processing, and the rest is history. The worst of these grains, as far as mold contamination, are sold for livestock feed and alcohol processing–beer mostly.

Other foods that can be a cause of yeast infections are peanuts, corn, and red apples, which will actually grow mold on them as they grow. Peanuts also are the most genetically engineered food on the planet, stick too organic.

These foods can kill the beneficial bacteria in our digestive system because of the molds they are contaminated with. They also allow the yeast to grow since the yeast eats the sugars in these foods. They often sit in the intestine and ferment before digestion, which causes a condition known as dysbiosis, or toxic colon. These toxins alter good bacterial supplies and yeast gains the upper hand.

Mycotoxins from molds and fungi are also known cancer-causing agents that are released by molds and yeasts. One of these mycotoxins, called aflatoxin, happens to be the most carcinogenic substance on earth. In the common diets of today, grains are consumed in all three meals in some form, from cereals to breads and pastas. So every day the average American is consuming .15mg to .5mg of aflatoxin.

The western diet of today, due to sugars and molds in the foods we eat, is a cancer-causing machine. The addition of these sugars allows the yeast to thrive unbeknown to many people that have it, and allows it to inject its own mycotoxins into your body. This will suppress the immune system and lead to other autoimmune system diseases such as cancer, lupus, multiple sclerosis, crohns, arthritis, skin disorders, chronic fatigue, depression, fibromyalgia, etc. if left untreated.

Chlorine is added to the water supply of the US to kill parasites, microbes, and bad bacteria present in our drinking water supply. But when you drink this water directly from your tap, the chlorine kills the good bacteria in your intestines. To chlorine, bacteria is bacteria, it doesn’t know the difference from good or bad.

Fluoride also is a cause of yeast infection and killer of, not only intestinal bacteria, but also enzymes, which are the building blocks of all life and work on the cellular DNA level, as well as in the process of digestion and immune system health.

Buying a water distiller and using this water to not only drink, but to also cook with. It is the only system that will remove fluoride from your drinking water besides reverse osmosis, which makes the water too acidic. Fluoride has been found, when used for cooking, to release toxic metals from common cooking utensils. So called bottled spring water in independent testing is not always safe either, due to pollutants in the air, coming to the ground in rain, and getting in the water table, it can be just as bad for you. You also have tons of run off from fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics, and other chemicals in the water supply. A lot of so-called spring water is really just filtered tap water. The industry is not regulated very strongly, so you can’t always be sure what you are really drinking. Buy a water distiller for your drinking and cooking needs. It will last a lifetime and be one of the best health investments you have ever made.

So how do we avoid these molds and antibiotics in our foods that can be a cause of yeast infection?

In almost every store in the country you can buy hormone and antibiotic free beef. Buy it, eat it, and simply don’t buy the rest.

Cut down on grain foods that cause yeast infections drastically by eliminating the chips, cookies, cakes, cereals, and pastas. Substitute pastas with rice that you have to fry first for a grain.

Eat more organic eggs for breakfast and organic milk if you must. And don’t worry about cholesterol, which is caused by mycotoxins in the blood stream, sugar, and trans fats, and is also an immune system response to these mycotoxins from fungus. Take away the mycotoxins and junk food and your cholesterol will be just fine.

Cause of Yeast Infection and the Immune System

Another cause of yeast infection is a generally weakened or deficient immune system.

How does the immune system get worn down enough to be a cause of yeast infection in the average person?

Many times a person has had an illness or injury and their health is never the same again. The body has been damaged too severely for the immune system to repair the cells properly, although it never stops trying. Over time, the immune system weakens to the point it can no longer defend the body. Instead, it focuses on other processes more important for continued life.

Every day we are exposing ourselves to polluted air from the smog from our cars and power plants, which, if coal-fired, deliver acid rain containing mercury to the ground that enters the food chain. Mercury, aluminum, lead, and excess iron are definitely linked to chronic yeast infections. If your levels are high and you do nothing to solve the problem, you will not get rid of your candida yeast infection.

There are now traces of over 300 toxins in our bodies that were not present before 1940. These toxins have been shown to bind to receptors, blocking important enzymatic reactions in the body weakening the immune system.

Chemicals in the home from soaps, laundry detergents, toothpastes, perfumes, cleaning solvents, etc. are causes. I could go on and on in this area. Even carpet is made of petroleum and plastics that are toxic. The effect is cumulative, it takes time, but yeast or other diseases are always the result.

Our foods are more and more genetically engineered and their food value becoming more and more questionable. Modern farming has stripped the soils of all minerals and vitamins, so foods have very little value any more. According to a report released at the 1992 Earth Summit, the USA has the worst soil in the world – 85% depleted. The rest of the world’s soils are not much better, with South America and Asia’s soils being 78% depleted, Africa 75%, Europe 70%, and Australia 58%. This means the potency of our food supply is not able to sustain optimum health. Is it any wonder we are overweight and chronically ill? We are literally starving to death from lack of nutrition!

Pesticides are used that kill beneficial soil based organisms that used to be a part of our diets from the family farms of old. We add chemicals to dairy foods to give it a longer shelf life.

The average American eats over 7 pounds of sugar a year which is creating a Type 2 diabetic epidemic in this country. Obesity is at an all time high from sugar and processed grains which themselves are turned to sugar when digested. The pancreas kicks in some insulin that picks up the sugar and deposits it on the body as fat. Fat is the fuel the body was originally designed to run on, not sucrose.

Sugar contributes to the cause of yeast infections by feeding the fungus in the body allowing it to grow and spread. Sugar is also by far the number one thing that can wear down your immune system. It is worse than smoking.

All of our food is cooked, processed, and enzymatically dead, this causes the pancreas an additional load, and it, must create more enzymes to digest these foods. The metabolic enzymes are forced to help out with digestion when they should be helping repair cells and removing wastes.

We vaccinate our children with basically poisons in the name of good health that actually weaken their immune systems.

Another very common cause of yeast infection is mold growing in ventilation systems. I have personally seen this condition inside air conditioners. These mold spores blow into the home, and once you breath them, they can travel through the body, causing asthma and bronchitis.

Predisposing Causes of Yeast Infection

  • Trauma
  • Altered Physiological states
  • Drug Addiction
  • Endocrine problems
  • Indwelling catheters
  • Blood disorders and neutropenia
  • Corticosteroid therapy
  • Reduced or dysfunctional phagocytosis
  • Irradiation
  • Transplantation
  • Diabetes
  • Malnutrition
  • Burns
  • Collagen disease

All these things contribute as a cause of yeast infections today and weaken our immune systems. Bacteria are our first line of defense in our immune systems, and all these things can and do contribute to help kill them.

It is becoming more and more necessary to take supplements every day to maintain a healthy body and a healthy immune system. Even the AMA recently suggested that everyone in the country should be on a multivitamin/mineral supplement for example like colloidal silver.

The trick is to take quality supplements and eat mostly good fresh foods. Drink plenty of clean fresh water to flush out poisons and wastes from the body while minimizing environmental toxins in the home.

The benefits? You will go through life healthier, more energetic, happier, and live to a ripe old age, if you so choose.

Candida and yeast infections cannot be beaten with diet alone; it simply will not work without good supplements to support cellular health as by using colloidal silver.

Date – A Wonder Fruit of Arabia

Dates are the fruits of the date palm tree which is a food of high nutritional value. They are used abundantly in the month of Ramadan when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. The sweetness of the date takes the edge off hunger and this is another reason why fasts are opened with dates. This prevents a person from overeating after he has opened his fast.

Dates contain calcium, sulphur, iron, potassium, phosphorus, manganese, copper, magnesium, volatile oils, Vitamin-B6, folic acid, Potassium, Iron and Magnesium, proteins, sugars, vitamins and are rich in natural fibers which contribute to a healthy body and mind.

Dates provides natural sugar in the form of glucose and fructose which is ready for immediate absorption and, is infinitely far superior to cane-sugar.

Eating dates has great benefits which can be illustrated as follows:

Prevents Cancer: Dates are very nutritious and contain natural fibres. Modern medicine has shown that they are effective in preventing abdominal cancer. In general Bedouin Arabs, who eat them on a regular basis, show an extremely low incidence rate of cancer.

Weak heart: Dates are an excellent remedy for weak heart. Dates soaked overnight should be taken twice a week which strengthens the heart.

Bedouin Arabs who regularly consume dates have shown an extremely low rate of heart disease.

Treatment for Obesity: The wide variety of nutritious elements in dates makes it hunger-resistive! So treatment by eating few dates when feeling hungry helps reduce hunger and be filled. These dates will provide the body with the necessary sugar and stimulate the intestine which reduce hunger greatly, and eventually, reduce food consumption.

Eases child-birth: Eating dates eases the pain of childbirth. Scientifically they are known to contain hormones which strengthen the uterus, help produce milk for nursing mothers and also prevent blood loss after childbirth. (The ripe fruit contains a substance that urges uterine spasms and increases contractions especially in the time of delivery. This substance resembles ‘oxytocin’ that is secreted by pituitary gland, which encourages contractions of the uterus. Dates contain some stimulants which strengthen the muscles of the uterus in the last months of pregnancy. This helps the dilation of the uterus at the time of delivery and reduces post-natal bleeding).

Ideal for breast-feeding mothers: Dieticians consider dates the best food for breast-feeding mothers. This is because dates contain elements that assist in alleviating depression and enrich the breast milk with the nutrients needed to make the child healthy and resistant to disease.

Bones: Calcium is important for strong bones so this is an additional benefit that dates provide. As dates are rich in calcium, they contribute to healthy bones. For this reason it is recommended that children and older adults, especially women, eat plenty of dates to strengthen their bones.

Modern science has also proved the effectiveness of dates, in preventing diseases of the respiratory system.

Intestinal Disturbances: Eating dates in the morning on an empty stomach kills intestinal worms and other parasites, for dates have an antidotal potency which restrains their growth. According to Metchnikoff, a great Russian scientist, liberal use of dates keeps in check the growth of pathological organisms and helps to establish a colony of friendly bacteria in the intestines.

Improves Eye sight: Dates are also important in maintaining good vision and are effective in guarding against night-blindness.

Cures constipation: Dates are also highly beneficial in the treatment of constipation as the roughage provided by it stimulates sluggish bowels. They should be immersed in water at night and taken after making them into fine syrup the next morning to secure laxative effect.

Remedy for Sexual Debility: Date syrup can be used as a treatment for weak heart. It can also be use for the treatment of sexual weakness. When it’s mixed with milk and honey, dates can be used as a tonic for the treatment of sexual disturbances for both sexes. And such syrup strengthens the body and raises its energy levels. The elderly would benefit from this syrup too. It improves their stamina and purges their bodies from the toxins that have accumulated in their cells along the years.

Remedy for Liver and Inflammations: Dates remedy Lever and purge it from toxins, Breaking the fast with dates, is one of the most magnificent of natural remedies for the maintenance and purging the Lever from accumulated toxins. And also drinking dates juice could be used in the treatment of sore throat, various types of fever, rhinorrhia and common cold.

Remedy for Intoxication: Dates are an excellent remedy for alcoholic intoxication. In such a case, drinking water in which fresh dates have been rubbed or soaked will bring quick relief

Children’s Disease: Dates tied to a wrist of the baby and allowed to be sucked during teething period hardens the gums and also prevents other complaints like restlessness and diarrhea.

In short sentence, one date satisfies the minimum requirements of a balanced and healthy diet – so cultivating a healthy habit of eating dates miraculously preserves our health and attains longevity.

Collinsonia Root for Varicose Veins

If you or someone you know suffers from varicose veins listen up. I have discovered something that works.

Collinsonia root, otherwise known as stone root, is a not very well known natural remedy. But it is a great remedy, and I personally can attest to its healing properties. I have tried many things to help varicose veins, and I have found only two natural things that work: the raw food diet, and collinsonia root. In this article I will discuss the benefits of collinsonia root, and how it can help your varicose veins.

Collinsonia root is an diuretic, tonic, and vulnerary. A diuretic means it increases the secretion and expulsion of urine. A tonic means it strengthens or invigorates an organ, or the entire organism. A vulnerary is something that is a healing application for wounds, a topical application. This is what most books say collinsonia root does. But somewhere, in a little whole in the wall health food store called “Atlantis Rising”, a place that had a heated brick floor, and the employees were barefoot, and they played tripee music, and had all kinds of cool raw food books, herbs, and incense….they had the biggest herb book I have ever seen in my life. Twice the size of the largest Bible I have ever seen. I was, and am still a little jealous. But it was just sitting there on a table for everyone’s use.

In that book, I looked up the cure for varicose veins, this is a true story, and I found collinsonia root. I don’t remember the property that they gave it in that book, but I glommed onto it, found a Naturopathic college that sold it that was close by, and began taking it. I took 2 capsules, 3 times a day, and did not change my diet, which was a pretty standard American diet, add a little more veggies and fruit. After six weeks I would wake up itching! My varicose veins had been shrinking, and I believe the itching was a sign of further healing. My husband and I were shocked at the improvement that just this one herb did for my varicose veins. We had tried other things on me, but nothing got these kinds of results.

One word of warning. Don’t let anyone sell you the unground root. Buy it already ground, and put it in capsules yourself. The naturopathic college quit carrying the root because, well it’s not called stone root for nothing: it broke several of their grinders!

Do a search on collinsonia root to find a supplier. It is a pretty inexpensive cure for varicose veins.

I’m Taking Pig Hormones! A Look at Natural Thyroid

What’s a common disease that over 5 million Americans suffer from and many may not even be aware they have it? Hypothyroidism and related forms of thyroid dysfunction!

The thyroid gland looks like a little bow tie and is located at the base of the throat, below the Adam’s apple in males. Thyroid dysfunction affects both males and females. This gland produces hormones which control the body’s metabolism, your internal thermostat of sorts.

Thyroid dysfunction is generally either an over or under production of the hormone. Under active thyroid hormone production is called hypothyroidism; whereas too much, or overactive thyroid hormone production is called hyperthyroidism.

Some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism include chronic fatigue and weakness, weight gain or difficulty losing weight, hair loss or coarse, dry hair, dry and rough skin, intolerance to cold, abnormal menstrual cycles, decreased sex drive, memory loss, depression and irritability, constipation, muscle cramps. Not all symptoms are always present.

Some doctors prefer to diagnose hypothyroidism with a blood test. They will test to check TSH levels (the thyroid stimulating hormone produced by the pituitary gland) and T4 levels (the main thyroid hormone). Other doctors prefer to take a more holistic approach and are able to diagnose based on symptoms. Morning body temperature readings (below 97.1 consistently) as well as discovery of regular waking up approximately four hours after going to bed, can aid in the diagnosis.

There are chemical, synthetic treatments that can be used to restore healthy thyroid functions, such as Synthroid and Levothyroxine.

Some doctors and sufferers prefer to use a form of natural thyroid hormone extracted from swine and cows. Yup, pig thyroid! It’s the closest to the human thyroid hormone and contains both T4 and T3 thyroid hormones.

Naturopaths have long recognized that there are very effective herbs that can help to promote healthy thyroid functioning and restore thyroid health.

Armour, a natural thyroid is available by prescription. T-100 is another brand of natural thyroid that can be obtained through holistic processionals. Regular use of natural thyroid can help to restore deficient iodine levels, while also stimulating the thyroid to produce crucial thyroid hormones, thereby treating hypothyroidism.

Bladder wrack or kelp, Licorice, Saw Palmetto and Ginger (root) have also been known to stimulate the thyroid to release thyroid hormones and is therefore beneficial in the treatment of hypothyroidism.

If you’re not comfortable taking synthetic medications, give natural thyroid a chance. It’s the closest match to human thyroid and can leave you feeling worlds better. Even natural supplements need to be under the care of your physician. Please do not self medicate.

Your Ragdoll Cat Can Get Very Lonely

Your ragdoll cat is probably a very important and ever present figure in your life, every tme you turn around you probably see the ragdoll following you around of flopped out on the floor, ready to be stepped on if you happen to step back without looking.

The ragdoll is truly a breed that loves people, or at least loves attention and affection, dare to ignore it for any length of time and the ragdoll will surely let you know. Most ragdoll cats are likely to be easy to train, at least easier than most other cats.

It is important that you leash train the ragdoll, as I’m sure you’re aware, ragdolls are intended to be indoor cats not outdoor. How many times have you panicked when you thought your ragdoll had escaped and run away, only to find him half an hour later curled up somewhere unexpected?

Yes, ragdolls do not belong outdoors, they may be intelligent creatures, but they also completely lack any common sense half the time. With a ragdoll cat, there is no such thing as street smarts, they will happily run into the road, approach any dog, cat or other animal they can find, or worse – jump into any pools of water. They do seem to love water, it is not unheard of for ragdolls to try and get into the bath or shower with their owners.

Your ragdoll cat may be the cutest cat in the world, and are obviously very sweet, but they can be very annoying too. If they wouldn’t follow you around all day, then you wouldn’t have to accidentally step on a fluffy tale or a paw without realizing it. And if they wouldn’t insist on lying on your laptop, every time you want to work or surf the net, you would be much happier.

Ragdolls do love spending as much time you as is felinely possible, they would never leave you side if they had the opportunity, and they absolutely hate it when you leave them alone, all that meowing isn’t for nothing, they really do not want to be left alone, and will insist on causing chaos if they are left for any length of time.

Your ragdoll cat can get very lonely and very depressed if you go out to work every day for any length of time, this needy behavior is often the reason the ragdoll cat can ends up in rescue centers so often. People are just not aware of the care needed for such a people orientated cat.

Ragdolls are huge cats, especially the males, but the females are big enough too; they just eat and eat and eat, every time you go into the kitchen the ragdoll is right behind you, like a tail, assuming that since you are in the kitchen you must be making him food.

Of course all your food is their food too, and you won’t hear the last of it if you are trying to eat a nice piece of fish, without giving any to your ragdoll cat. The ragdoll just does not give up, he offers your lots of cuddles, you offer him food.

The ragdoll cat is a charmer, a sweet laid-back and loyal pet, buy one who will get on your nerves one day and charm you the next. Purrfect.

When Patients Should Visit a Neurologist

A neurologist is a doctor who treats issues affecting the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system. Two specific areas of treatment that neurologists treat are chronic pain and sleep disorders.

Pain Treatment

Neurologists not only identify and manage devastating muscular disorders like MS; they also provide a safe and effective treatment for chronic pain.

Pain is relayed to the brain via the nervous system, which identifies a foreign stimulus and translates the degree of injury into pain. The spinal cord hosts a nerve bundle that sends the pain message to the brain in seconds.

With chronic pain, these messages sometimes don’t stop when the injury healed. Long-term conditions, such as arthritis, are believed to be a contributing factor for the continued pain messages because the pathways may be damaged. This is thought to cause an excessive stimulus to the pain center and create a memory. Even though there is no current injury, the pain response feels the same.

Whether the pain is long or short term or is a result of trauma or unknown causes, a neurologist is often the best bet for limiting suffering. Based on medical history, physical impairments, and pain sites, the neurologist may order a series of tests to determine the actual cause and pathway of the pain. Once diagnosed, the treatment plan is discussed and set in motion.

Sleep Disorders

In addition to pain control, a neurologist can help with sleep disorders. There are many of these disorders with a variety of causes. Here are some of the more common sleep disorders that can be addressed by a neurologist:

Sleep Apnea – Sleep apnea is a common disorder that has the potential of causing serious health problems if not corrected. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the tissues in the throat collapse or the tongue falls back in the throat preventing proper breathing to take place. However, there is another form known as central sleep apnea, which occurs when the brain doesn’t send the message for the respiratory muscles to do their work. The long-term effects can be serious, including heart attacks, an enlarged heart, and/or heart failure, strokes, and headaches.

Narcolepsy – Narcolepsy is another sleep disorder with significant repercussions. This condition is often found to be a neurological problem, though not all cases are the same. Some patients experience paralysis when they first wake and are unable to move their extremities. Other patients have fallen asleep while working or even driving a car.

Insomnia – Insomnia is a sleep disorder that could make it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep. Comorbid insomnia is the inability to sleep due to other conditions such as depression or chronic pain.

Proper diagnosis is crucial to treating and controlling these disorders. Sleep studies may be required to determine the oxygen levels and brain waves during sleep. An EEG will test the electrical activity while sleeping or experiencing sleep apnea. In addition, genetic history and testing may be suggested to identify underlying health issues causing the sleep disorder.

Once the diagnosis is made, treatment begins and the suffering lessens or is eliminated. Seeking the help of a neurologist early in the disease or disorder will limit the damage caused by unknown conditions. It may be as simple as a diet change or medication to alter patterns and restore a normal restful night’s sleep.

Most common Types of Cancer – Larynx (Voice Box) Cancer

Larynx is also known as voice box, located between the pharynx and the trachea. Its function is to ensure the airways are open and when we breath and talk and closed when we swallow to ensure no food gets into the trachea.

Larynx Cancer or Laryngeal Cancer
Larynx cancer is also known as cancer of the larynx or laryngeal carcinoma and can develop in any part of the larynx. Most larynx cancers are squamous cell carcinomas as a result of uncontrolled multiplication of transformed malignant cells in the laryngeal epithelium originated in the glottis.

Symptoms of Larynx (Voice Box) Cancer
1. Hoarseness or other voice changes
Due to malignant cells have invaded the vocal cords.
2. A cough that doesn’t go away or stridor
Due to blocking of the airway
3. Breathing difficulties
Tumor has grown large enough to block off the air way
4. Ear pain
Tumor has pressed onto the nerve
5. A lump or mass in the neck or throat
Cancer gas invaded the nearby lymph nodes in the neck and throat.
6. Coughing up of blood
Breaking off of some malignant cells
7. Etc.

Causes and risk factors of Larynx (Voice Box) Cancer or Laryngeal Cancer
1. Smoking
The risk of larynx cancer is 30 time higher in smoker compared to never smoke people. it may be due to high levels of carcinogens accumulated in the surface of the larynx lining for the
prolonged period of time. Secondhand smoke is also considered as a cause of non smoker.

2. Alcohol
Risk of larynx cancer is twice in heavy drinking compared to non or moderate drinking. In a controlled case of study of Combined effect of tobacco and alcohol on laryngeal cancer risk, researchers found that both cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking are independent risk factors for laryngeal cancer. Heavy consumption of alcohol and cigarettes determined a multiplicative risk increase, possibly suggesting biological synergy.

3. Aging
The risk of larynx cancer increases with age. Most cases of the cancer are detected usually detected in people between 50 and 75 years.

3. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
In GERD, the stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, causing a burning pain. It any be caused by prolonged period of acid damaging to the larynx. In some studies, researchers found that irritation from longstanding GERD increases the risk of larynx cancer.

4. Poor nutrition
Poor nutrition induces the risk of all kinds of diseases due to weakened immune system, including larynx cancer. Some researchers suggested that not getting enough vitamins might be a risk factor.

5. Human papillomavirus (HPV)
HPV infection of the larynx may increase the risk of laryngeal cancer. Although, infectious theory may be required further study, but prolonged period of larynx infection increases the risk of cancer found in some patients.

6. Race
Larynx cancer is developed twice as often among people of African descent than among Caucasians.

7. Gender
Men are at risk of larynx cancer than women. It may be due higher percentage of men are smokers and heavy drinkers.

9. Weakened immune system
People with weaken immune systems due to diseases or poor nutrition are at risk to develop laryngeal cancer.

10. Toxic exposure
Inhaling or exposed to wood dust, asbestos, or many types of chemicals that can increase the risk of larynx cancer.

11. Voice overused
Occupation required to use their voice most of the time can damage the vocal cord, leading to cancerous polyp.

12. Mouthwash used
A review of 200 patients with oral cancer researcher found that 10 of the 11 patients who did not smoke or drink alcohol frequently used mouthwash high in alcohol content, but further study showed that there is no link of mouth wash with high alcohol content and larynx cancer.

13. Etc.

Diagnosis and tests
Physical exam is always important and to be done by your doctor as if you are having some of above symptoms and your doctor suspect that there may be larynx problem to check any abnormality of the neck, thyroid, larynx, and lymph nodes, including swellings and lumps.
In fact, not all abnormalities are cancerous.
1. Indirect laryngoscopy
By using a small, long-handled mirror, your doctor will examine your throat for any abnormality, including your vocal cords through the a reflected image on a mirror.

2. Direct laryngoscopy
With the use of a either a hollow medical instrument or a fiberoptic cable called laryngoscope, inserted through your mouth or nose to check for any abnormality that may not see by the direct laryngoscopy by applying either local or general anesthesia.

3. Biopsy
Biopsy is a procedure of taking sample from susceptible area or tumor found by other tests by a small needle with local or general anesthesia. The sample will be examined by a pathologist under microscope to review the stage of the tumor.

4. CT scan (computerized tomography)
A CT scan generates a large series of two-dimensional X-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation, to create a three-dimensional picture of the inside of the body in details. The pictures are viewed by your doctor to see the extent of the tumors abnormalities, such as spreading of cancer to the nearby structure and lymph nodes. This test is helped to determine whether the abnormality is a cyst or a tumor. In some doctors, X ray may be also ordered together with the CT scan.

5. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging is one of many advanced technology used to visualize internal structures cross sectional imaging of your body used effectively in providing the better details of the metastasis of cancer in the larynx and surrounding areas.

6. Etc.

Stages and grade of larynx cancer
A. Grading of the tumor is depended on the nature of non invasive or invasive. Tumor which spread slowly is given a lower grade, while fast spreading tumor is given a highest grade.

B. Stage of the larynx cancer
1. Stage 0
Larynx cancer is classified as
Stage 0. if the cancerous cell have not penetrated in deeper tissue but remain in the surface of the lining.
2. Stage I
The cancerous are no longer in the surface but have invaded into deep the lining, but still completely inside the larynx.
a. Stage IA
The cancer is not ≤ 3 mm (1/8 inch) deep and ≤ 7 mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.1. Stage IA1: The spreading is < 3mm(1/8 inch) deep and < 7mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.2. Stage IA2: The invasion area is ≥ 3 mm but ≤ 5 mm (about 1/5 inch) deep and &less than 7 mm (about 1/4 inch) wide.

b. Stage IB: The cancer in this stage have invaded the connective tissue of the larynx, & less than 5mm (1/5 inch).
b.1. Stage IB1:
Cancer is 4 cm large (1 3/4 inches).
b.2. Stage IB2:
Cancer is ≥ 4 cm (1 3/4 inches) but & less than 5cm (1/5 inch)

3. Stage III
The cancer cells have spread to distant tissues, but is still within the larynx

4. Stage IV
The cancerous cells has spread to the tissues immediately surrounding the larynx

5. Stage V
Stage V is the most advance stage of renal cell carcinoma as cancer cells have spread to the distant parts of the body

A. How to prevent
1. Quit smoking
Smokers are 5 time more at risk to develop larynx cancer than non smokers.

2. Alcohol
Heaving drinking non only damage the liver but also twice at risk than non or moderate drinkers3. Avoid asbestos. The inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause serious illnesses, including larynx cancer. Although asbestos now have been banned in some countries and precarious is taken in some others. People in the underdeveloped world still at risk of asbestos using.

3. Nutrients and immune system
Make sure you are eating healthy to prevent poor nutritional and weakened immune system causes of larynx cancer.

4. Protect your sound
If you are in occupation required a lot of talking and singing, please take time to stop.

5. Etc.

B. Diet
Your are directed to my previous article of 100+ most healthier foods at
1. Fruits
In a study of nutrient-based dietary patterns and laryngeal cancer: evidence from an exploratory factor analysis, researchers suggested that diets rich in animal products and animal fats are directly related, and those rich in fruit and vegetables inversely related, to laryngeal cancer risk.

2. Freeze dried strawberry
In study of 36 participants consumed 60 grams of freeze dried strawberries daily for six months and completed a dietary diary chronicling their strawberry consumption. The results showed that 29 out of 36 participants experienced a decrease in histological grade of the precancerous lesions during the study.

3. Tomato
In study of Tomatoes, tomato-rich foods, lycopene and cancer of the upper aerodigestive tract, researchers stated that our study provides evidence of strong protective e€ect of tomatoes, tomato-rich foods and lycopene, and UADC.

4. Soy
In study of Flavonoids, Proanthocyanidins, and Cancer Risk: A Network of Case-Control Studies From Italy, researchers found that intakes of flavonoids, flavanones, and flavonols were found to be inversely related to oral and laryngeal cancers.

5. Cruciferous vegetables
Research found that cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and brussel sprout contain high amount of phytochemicals, sulforaphanem, indole-3-carbinol and diindolylmethane have shown inhibition of certain cancerous cells.

C. Nutritional supplements
1. Antioxidants
Antioxidants are one the proven to be effective in prevent cancer cause of oxidation stress. You are directed to my previous article for in depth discussion.

2. Antioxidants
In a case-control study of micro-nutrients and laryngeal cancer risk in Italy and Switzerland, researchers found that independently from smoking and alcohol consumption, the intake of several micro-nutrients, including selected antioxidants, is inversely related to laryngeal cancer

3. Vitamin A, C and zinc
Association of vitamin A, vitamin C and zinc with laryngeal cancer to assess the levels of vitamin A, vitamin C and zinc in laryngeal cancer patients and healthy controls, researchers found that serum vitamin A, zinc and plasma vitamin C levels were significantly lower in laryngeal cancer patients as compared to the controls.

4. Selenium
In study of laryngeal cancer and blood selenium levels researchers found that lower blood selenium levels in this latter group of laryngeal cancer patients may be a consequence of their disease rather than its cause.

5. Quercetin
In study of effects of quercetin on human laryngeal cancer Hep-2 cells, researchers found thatQuercetin could effectively inhibit the proliferation of Hep-2 cells and its mechanism is probably related to the apoptosis.

A. Conventional medicine
Treatments in larynx cancer may result of the way you look, breathe, and talk, it is for your benefit that you should consider all the option treatments and expect what will happen after so shock and stress after a diagnosis of cancer can be prevented. You may also want to get second opinion from other expert. Please ask as many questions as you can your doctor will be happy to answer all your concerns before treatments. Removing the tumor, surrounding tissue and muscles may cause difficulty in neck movement. If a tracheostomy (surgery to create an artificial airway in the trachea) was performed, the stoma is usually permanent.
Larynx cancer usually treated with combination of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy depending to the stage and grade of the tumor.
1. Surgery
Depending to the stage and grade of the tumor. In this surgery, a tracheostomy tube, is needed keeps the new airway open and a new airway called stoma (opening on the chest made during surgery by your surgeon) to allow air to enter and leaves the trachea and lungs.
a. Total laryngectomy
Completely remove the larynx.
b. Partial laryngectomy
In this surgery, only parts of rlarynx is removed.
b.1. Supraglottic laryngectomy
In this surgery, only the top part of larynx is removed.
b.2. Cordectomy:
In this surgery, one or both vocal cords are removed.

c. Side effects
Surgery and anesthesia risks and complication
2. Radio therapy By using high-energy x-rays or other types of radiation, radiation therapy kills breast cancer cells and keep them from growing or regrowing. If the cancer is small in size, cancer can be cured. If the cancer is large, radiation therapy can be used to control local bad symptoms. Treatments are usually given 5 days a week for 4 to 8 weeks.
a. In general, radiotherapy is used for small tumors or patients who cannot have surgery.

b. In other case, if surgery can not be performed due to the stage of the tumor, radiotherapy can be used to shrink the tumor to make surgery possible

c. Side effects
c.1. Fatigue
c.2. Chest pain
c.3. Heart problem
c.4. Short of breath
c.5. Skin discoloration or pinkness, irritation
c.6. Etc.

3. Chemotherapy
a. Chemotherapy is most use to treat with advance stage of larynx cancer, as it has spread to a distant parts of the body by using drugs taken by mouth or injected into a vein or muscle of the patient to stop the growth of or to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy can be used combination with radio therapy and surgery.
b. Side effects
b.1. Nausea
b.2. Vomiting
b.3. Hair loss
b.4. Fatigue
b.5. Anemia
b.6. Mouth sores taste and smell changes
b.7. Infection
b.8. Etc.

B. Traditional Chinese medicine
1. Chen Pi
Chen Pi is also known as Tangerine Peel. The acrid, bitter and warm herb has been used in TCM as antibiotic agent and to stimulate blood vessels, inhibit movements of digestive tract and f uterine muscles, improve digestion, etc. as it regulates stomach qi, invigorates spleen Qi, dries damp, transforms phlegm and prevents stagnation, etc. by enhancing the functions of lung and spleen channels. In vitro study Researcher found that Hesperidin in Chen pi inhibits anti oxidative effect in preventing oxidation cause of cell DNA althernation.

2. Niu Bang Zi
Niu Bang Zi is also known as great burdock fruit. The acrid, bitter and cold herb has been used in TCM as antibiotic, antipyretic, anti tumor agent and to lower blood sugar, get rid of toxins, etc. as it clears heat, disperses wind-heat, remove toxins, etc. by enhancing the functions of lung and stomach channels. In studies researchers found that have arctigenin, a chemical in Niu Bang Zi, does in fact slow tumor growth.

3. Jie Geng
Jie geng is also known as Platycodon Root. The acrid, bitter and neutral herb has been use in TCM as anti-inflammatory, anti ulcers agent and to inhibit cough, treat bronchitis, sore throat etc., as it stimulates the lung in dispersing and descending functions, transforms phlegm, etc., by enhancing the functions of the lung channels.
The Researchers found that Saponins in Jie Geng have been shown to very significantly augment the cytotoxicity of immunotoxins and other targeted toxins directed against human cancer cells.

4. Xia Ku Cao
Xia Ku Cao is also known as Common Selfheal Fruit-Spike. The acrid, bitter and cold herb has ben used in TCM as diuretic, antibiotic agent and to treat hypertension and arteriosclerosis, acute tonsillitis, amnesia, whoooing cough etc., as it disperses Liver-Fire and nodules, treat hypotension, etc. by enhancing the functions of liver and gallbladder channels.
Researchers found that cyasterone in Xia Ku Cao showed anti tumor activity.

Speech therapies after surgery
If treatment involves total removal of the larynx, a tracheostomy (surgery to create an artificial airway in the trachea) is then performed to improve breathing, patient will have to learn how to speech again with the help of below speech therapies.

1. Esophageal Speech
Esophageal Speech is also known esophageal voice. It is type or method of speech production using the oscillation of the esophagus. In this method, learner takes air in through the mouth, traps it in the throat, then released in a controlled manner to create sound used to produce speech.

2. Artificial Larynx
An artificial larynx is a medical device was introduced in the 1940s, used to produce clearer speech by those who have lost their original voicebox as a result of larunx cancer. It is considered as one of more difficult method to master that requires training and practice.

3. Tracheoesophageal Puncture (TEP)
Tracheoesophageal Puncture (TEP), generally perform during the surgery of the removal of larynx, is a surgically created hole between the trachea (windpipe) and the esophagus with the help of a voice prosthesis is inserted into this puncture to keeps food out of the trachea but allows air into the esophagus for oesophageal speech. When speak, the person inhales air through a permanent breathing hole in the neck into the lungs with the cover of the stoma by a finger, air is directed from the tracheax into the esophagus to produce speech.
