Lately there has been debate about the importance of HPRO with some Managers and Directors eschewing HPRO for Profitability or Total Labor Sales. At the end of the day though, you may have Labor Sales but how do you really compare an Advisors performance or counsel them based on total Labor Sales?

HPRO is the universal measurement. It is easily understood and can be an excellent Coaching and Counseling point.

So what is HPRO and how is it measured?

HPRO is the Labor Time sold on a Repair Order. It is expressed as a unit of time. Each hour is divided into units of time called tenths of an hour. In each hour there are 10 units, each representing 6 minutes of time.
When a Service Advisor sells one Labor Hour he / she has sold 10 units of time. If your labor rate is $ 100.00 an hour, then each labor hour sold is worth $ 100.00. Six tenths would be $ 60.00; three tenths would be $ 30.00 and so on and so on.

When HPRO is calculated, the amount of money collected from the Customer is used to determine the Hours Per Repair Order sold. Let me explain. If an Advisor sells 1.5 hours of labor @ $ 100.00 that would be $ 150.00 in Total labor Sales. Say the Advisor only collections $ 135.00 from the Customer because he / she has a 10% discount. This would reduce the HPRO. Why?

Because the advisor only collected $ 135.00 from the Customer and the Customer Pay worker rate retained the same. $ 135.00 divided by $ 100.00 equals 1.35 hours sold not 1.5. In the Technicians case, the amount of collected money does little to affect the actual flag time. The Technician would still have earned the 1.5 hours of labor time. What happens is the Dealership loses not only the 10% discount; it also affects the Effective Labor Rate (another key measurement we will cover in another article.)

If you take that same 1.5 hours sold and divided the amount collected by the time sold, the Effective Labor Rate is $ 90.00 and not $ 100.00. Getting back to the question of whether or not you measure HPRO, if you are not, you must be keeping track of the amount of time sold some other way. And if you do it by total Labor Sales, you could be contributing to the career of an underachiever.

Let me explain.
What if Sally Service Advisor has been having slightly above average total Labor Sales yet achieves this by writing more repair orders that the other Advisors by 10%? Or Sally has higher than average Total Labor Sales and is accomplishing this by only writing Repair Orders with Maintenance or Accessories scheduled, in other words, cherry picking the appointments.

In both cases Sally may have high labor sales yet be a very poor Advisor.

Using HPRO as a measuring tool will ensure that you have a very clear picture of the performance of your Advisors. As you can see the Hours Per Repair Order is not only an important measurement, it is one that is vital to determining the performance of your Advisors and your Service Department.

I am not a vegetarian, and I would most definitively make this meal plan part of my routine! My goal is to eat healthy and not be bored with the same old “rabbit-food” that characterizes most diets. Ulcers – small, open breaks or craters in the lining of the upper gastrointestinal tract – typically develop in one of two sites. The most common form in the upper portion of the small intestine and are known as duodenal ulcers; less common are those in the stomach itself, which are gastric ulcers. Surprisingly, 15 to 20 percent of bleeding ulcers occurs initially without pain.


In general, ulcers are caused by an imbalance in the stomach, either too much stomach acid or pepsin, the major digestive enzyme, or too little protective mucous and protein secretions. This imbalance allows the stomach acids and enzymes to, in effect, turn on the digestive tract itself, producing small ulcers. But there is not, as is commonly thought, a direct relationship between excessive secret secretion and ulcers. Many people with duodenal ulcers, for example, secret large amounts of acid, but others do not. This has led many experts to suspect that poor tissue resistance and other factors, particularly cigarette smoking, that interfere with the flow of neutralizing secretions may contribute to ulcer development. Stress and emotional pressure are also frequently cited as causes of duodenal ulcers.

In the case of gastric ulcers, excess acid secretion appears to be even less of a factor than in other forms of ulcer, since many patients have normal and even low levels of stomach acid. Again, external factors or substances have been implicated in the origin of gastric ulcers, the two major ones being alcohol and apsirin. Both are known to injure the stomach lining, and it is thought they increase the stomach's vulnerability to the acid that is present.


Pain – centered in the pit of the stomach, just below the rib cage – is the most characteristic ulcer symptom, and it typically follows a distinct pattern. It usually begins several hours after eating or during the night, developing when the stomach is empty. The pain can manifest itself as a chronic gnawing or aching; it may grow worse during or immediately after meals; or there may be no pain at all, just belching – any ongoing discomfort discomfort should be called to a doctor's attention.


Gastrointestinal bleeding is one of the most common complications of ulcers. This may manifest itself as vomiting fresh, bright red blood or passing bloody or tarry stools. The symptoms of a panic attack can be extremely similar to the symptoms of a heart attack, and it can be very difficult to tell them apart. If you are in doubt, you should always visit an emergency room as soon as possible, because every moment counts if you are indeed having a heart attack. When you have a panic attack, you may have a racing heart, nausea, lightheadedness, chest pain, difficulty breathing, palpitations, and many other symptoms that are very similar to heart attack symptoms. This can be really scary, and that fear can make the symptoms spiral out of control. There's no really reliable way to figure out whether you are having a heart problem or an anxiety attack, which of course makes it difficult to decide what you should do. On one hand, if it is a heart attack and you do nothing, you could seriously damage your heart or even die. But on the other hand, if it's just a panic attack and you rush to the emergency room, it can be very embarrassing, and it will cost you time and money.

I advise taking your symptoms very seriously and seeing a doctor immediately the first couple of times. Even if you think it's just anxiety, it's better to get checked out so you'll have at least that peace of mind. The emergency room doctor can do an EKG to determine if you have any heart issues. If not, then in the future you can be reliably certain that you are simply having a panic attack.

You can also check your lips and fingernail beds for blueness. If your lips and fingernail beds are pink or pinkish, you are probably not having a heart attack. This will hopefully help you figure out your true issue, so your symptoms do not spiral out of control in fear for your life.

If you have been recently checked and it was determined that your heart is in good condition and you have normal blood pressure and no other health issues, you may need to try some techniques to calm yourself. If you use various breathing techniques and relaxation techniques and they do not ease your anxiety, you should get checked out by a physician. If the techniques work to minimize or eliminate your symptoms temporarily, you can be reliably assured that it's only anxiety.

Once you start to realize that what you're feeling is simply the effects of anxiety, you'll find that you have fewer of these issues, and those you do have will be much easier to control.
