If you are currently suffering from ovarian cyst symptoms especially if they are painful, the food that should be eliminated from your diet as soon as possible is caffeine.  Foods such as coffee, chocolate, cola and other caffeinated carbonated soft drinks tend to irritate and exasperate this condition.  Trying to live a caffeine free diet all at once can be difficult. But, while the symptoms are present consider avoiding caffeine as much as possible then once the cysts have shrunk and/or are eliminated then you can return to including some caffeine.   

Also, alcoholic beverages should be taken in moderation and if at all possible be completely eliminated.  This is because the combination of the alcohol and the amount of sugar involved makes it very difficult for the body to process thus causing more aggravation.

Other foods to keep away from that will help to ease symptoms are red meats, eggs, fats and processed foods. These foods will not only be beneficial easing the cyst symptoms but also in overall health. 

All of these negatives foods should be replaced by the more wholesome or positive foods like raw fruits and vegetables, the dark green leafy vegetables would be best.  Other great foods to add to your diet are whole grains, legumes, garlic and beets.  Adapting to a more natural diet will not only help to ease the symptoms but also in the recurrence of cysts. 

In addition to changing to a more healthy diet is that of adding natural herbs and supplements.  A couple of recommended herbs are Echinacea to help boost the immune system and milk thistle to aid the liver in detoxification.  A few suggested supplements are Zinc, Vitamin C, B Vitamins and Antioxidants.

Shoulder Surgery – Do You Really Need It?

A few months ago I tore one of the muscles in my rotator cuff and was told that I would need shoulder surgery to fix it.

Without getting too technical I will explain a little about the shoulder joint. The shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint. Your arm has a ball of bone on the end which sits inside a cartilage socket. The four muscles of the rotator cuff move the shoulder but also help hold the joint together.

All these muscles run over and under the bones of the shoulder, back and chest so any injury to one of the muscles can be extremely painful. Any swelling to the muscles caused by an injury means that they can catch on bone or other tendons as they move.

I tore the Supraspinatus muscle or rather one of its tendons. Because this tendon runs through a channel of bone at the end of my shoulder blade every movement meant that the tendon was being pinched. Trust me. That's painful.

I injured my shoulder by lifting something that was too heavy. After a few days of pain, I took my shoulder to the doctor who referred me to a specialist. He diagnosed rotator cuff syndrome which was confirmed by an MRI scan and I was booked for shoulder surgery. At the time, I was given a steroid injection into my shoulder muscle which reduced the inflammation and pain significantly, but gradually after about four weeks it started to deteriorate again and become more painful.

Whilst waiting for my surgery date, which can take a while in the UK, I started researching shoulder surgery on the internet and in the process came across some useful information on shoulder injuries. With nearly twelve weeks to wait until my planned shoulder surgery I decided to try something different to see if I could fix my shoulder.

I started exercising my shoulder, small movements at first avoiding anything painful gradually building up over the next few weeks until I could do just about anything that was asked of me. I was able to start swimming, which had been impossible at first, and am now back to full movement and completely pain free. I am now off of all pain killers and have just lost my first round of golf in three months. Of course I blamed my shoulder but in all honesty, it was the lack of practice rather than any shoulder problem directly.

I have now postponed the shoulder surgery and if the good fortune continues I will be cancelling it altogether.

What do I put this down to? I'm not really sure but my theory is that as we grow older we change shape, we do not use muscles so much and our posture changes. Maybe waking up some of those lazy muscles eased the pressure simply by making me stand straighter. Who knows? But I like my new stronger shoulders.

Information on Oral Thrush

Oral thrush is an infection of yeast fungus, Candida albicans, in the mucous membranes of the mouth. Strictly speaking, thrush is only a temporary candida infection in the oral cavity of babies. However, we have for this purpose expanded the term to include candida infections occurring in the mouth and throat of adults, also known as candidiasis or moniliasis.

Thrush infections are common in people who have high blood sugar. Oral thrush may also be a side effect of antibiotic treatment, since antibiotics kill off good bacteria as well as infection, resulting in an imbalance in the body’s naturally occurring flora. Thrush is also common in people who suffer from anemia or have hormone related disorders.

Thrush usually develops suddenly, but it may become chronic, persisting over a long period of time. A common sign of thrush is the presence of creamy white, slightly raised lesions in your mouth—usually on your tongue or inner cheeks—but also sometimes on the roof of your mouth, gums, tonsils, or back of your throat. The lesions, which may have a “cottage cheese” appearance, can be painful and may bleed slightly when you scrape them or brush your teeth.

Two specific causes of oral thrush are a reaction to antibiotics and transmission from a mother with a yeast infection. The mouth of a postnatal baby undergoes certain changes following a dose of antibiotic medication that create a breeding ground for a fungus to develop. It is also possible for a mother to pass on a yeast infection to her child in the form of candidosis. The transmission occurs from exposure in the birth canal and oftentimes results in infection when the baby is from two to ten weeks old.

Diagnosing Oral Thrush

To make a diagnosis your doctor will ask about your diet and recent use of antibiotics or medications that can weaken the immune system. The doctor will also take into consideration any history of diabetes, cancer, HIV or other chronic diseases. Candidiasis is easy to identify. The yeast can be seen under a microscope after being scraped off the affected area. However, since yeast is normally there anyway, your doctor will want to be sure that it’s candida causing the problem and not something else.

Anti-thrush tablets

Tablets that contain drugs such as fluconazole and itraconazole will usually clear fungus and thrush infections from the body. These tend to be used in more severe or serious cases. For example, for people with a poor immune system who develop extensive oral thrush.

Oral candidiasis can be treated with topical anti-fungal drugs, such as nystatin (mycostatin), miconazole or amphotericin B. Patients who are immunocompromised, either with HIV/AIDS or as a result of chemotherapy, may require systemic treatment with oral or intravenous administered anti-fungals.

People that take antibiotic treatments, such as people with anemia, HIV patients, and people with immune system problems are at a high risk of oral thrush. Oral thrush may also effect people with thyroid problems and diabetes. Infants are at very high risk of getting oral thrush because they lack the protective bacteria that is needed to control the yeast. This protective bacterium is obtained by time through the exposure to the environment. It oral thrush occurs it will be difficult to eat, due to the sores in the mouth. It is recommended to drink plenty of liquids, this will aid in any dehydration.

Stress Fractures

Stress fractures are small cracks in the bone caused by repetitive stresses or overuse, such as the repetitive impact on the bones of the lower leg and foot during running and jumping activities. This injury commonly occurs in the weight bearing bones of the feet, upper and lower legs, and hip area.

Any athlete may encounter this injury but those with lower bone density due to genetic, metabolic or dietary issues are more susceptible. Women may be more susceptible to stress fractures as well due to irregular or absent menstrual cycles, eating disorders or osteoporosis.

Recovery time usually ranges from six to ten weeks.

What is a stress fracture?

When bones are subjected to stresses they adapt, just as muscles do, to become stronger. To increase in strength they must rob calcium from one area to build another. This weakens that area and new, and repetitive, stresses on that weakened area can cause a crack. This fracture is a result of the bone's inability to handle the stress over time.

Weakened bones, due to old injuries or other conditions, are much more susceptible to stress fractures because they are unable to handle the new stresses applied to them. Athletes with compromised bone density must be very careful when increasing their work load.

Increases in intensity, duration or frequency can lead to stress fractures due to the process of repair and rebuilding being interrupted. The bones need adequate rest time to rebuild and restructure. If unable to repair, the bone will weaken and become susceptible to fracture. Treatment must be initiated as soon as possible to prevent further damage and a more severe fracture.

What sports and activities are most vulnerable?

While stress fractures can occur in any sport, they are most common in high impact sports of a repetitive nature. Sports such as basketball, track and field, dance, gymnastics and tennis are all examples of sports with a high frequency of stress fractures.

Athletes in any sport can fall victim to stress fractures if their form, posture or technique is incorrect or conditions change without a chance to adapt. Changing playing surfaces or using worn shoes, with poor support, can increase the risk as well. Increasing training loads too quickly or changing intensity without a period of time to adapt will make athletes more susceptible.

Anatomy of stress fractures

Stress fractures can occur in any bone that is compromised due to weakening when repetitive stresses are applied to it. Some bones are more commonly affected. Those bones that regularly bear weight and therefore receive the most shock from high impact activities are more susceptible.

The tibia (the larger of the two bones in the lower leg, referred to as the shin bone) is the bone involved in the highest percentage of stress fractures. The fibula (the other lower leg bone), the metatarsals (the long bones extending from the heel to the toes), and the femur (the thigh bone) are also commonly involved.

Do not Shrug Off Those Shoulder Injuries

The shoulder is among the most important body parts. We use it for shooting balls, throwing objects, blocking, balancing, and many other things – all of which can result in injuries varying from mild to major. An athlete should take any injury to his shoulder seriously. One must identify the injury immediately, apply proper treatment, and prevent it from happening – if that's possible with any athlete.

The shoulder joint has the least bone-to-bone contact. It has a higher interplay with the muscles and cartilages, which lessens the friction and stress against it. However, this also means that more soft tissues are vulnerable to damage. The entire joint is composed of three bones: the humerus, the shoulder blade, and the collarbone. Some argue that the breastbone should be considered a part of it. Nevertheless, they all function as one.

There are a lot of movements that can cause shoulder injury. The first, called an overhead motion, involves the overstretching of the forearm and hand from the body. Repetitive movements have also been a cause of many shoulder injuries. Among the common injuries related to these are tendinitis, rotator cuff injury, and osteoarthritis. In sports, rotator cuff injuries are quite common. While these may be more frequent among baseball pitchers, other athletes like golfers, swimmers, and football quarterbacks also have their share of this pain.

A shock, fall, or any force that strikes the shoulders can also result in a major injury. Other examples of injuries include shoulder dislocations, separated shoulders, and bone fractures – especially the collarbone.

Rest is necessary for any injury. If the athlete experiences pain when moving their arms and shoulders, immediately have them stop. They should put ice on the injured area for about 20 minutes several times a day for the first three days succeeding the injury report.

Getting advice from a physical therapist is important. An athlete should be able to perform basic movements soon enough; however, severe injuries may take more time as well as operations. It may be a bit expensive and complex, that's why the injured person must be able to determine with his or her physician what operations are necessary.

You can avoid or lessen the probability of getting injured by simply following certain disciplines. These include paying attention to correct body mechanics. Increasing your upper body flexibility and strength are also critical. Both can not only prevent injuries on the shoulders, they can also promote your sport performance. Lastly, do not slack on stretching and doing warm-ups before any match or game practice.

Cirrhosis – Causes, Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention

An abnormal liver condition characterized by irreversible scarring of the liver. Alcohol and viral hepatitis B and C are among the many causes of cirrhosis. Cirrhosis can cause yellowing of the skin (jaundice), itching, and fatigue. Diagnosis of cirrhosis can be suggested by physical examination and blood tests, and can be confirmed by liver biopsy in some patients. Complications of cirrhosis include mental confusion, coma, fluid accumulation (ascites), internal bleeding, and kidney failure. Treatment of cirrhosis is designed to limit any further damage to the liver as well as complications.

The liver, the largest organ in the body, is essential in keeping the body functioning properly. It removes or neutralizes poisons from the blood, produces immune agents to control infection, and removes germs and bacteria from the blood. It makes proteins that regulate blood clotting and produces bile to help absorb fats and fat-soluble vitamins. You cannot live without a functioning liver.


Cirrhosis is caused by chronic liver disease. Common causes of chronic liver disease in the US include hepatitis C infection and long-term alcohol abuse (see Alcoholic liver disease). Other causes of cirrhosis include hepatitis B, medications, autoimmune inflammation of the liver, disorders of the drainage system of the liver (the biliary system), and metabolic disorders of iron and copper (hemochromatosis and Wilson’s disease).


The early stages of Cirrhosis are often asymptomatic in sufferers. As Cirrhosis progresses, many symptoms may be experienced. Among them are nausea and loss of appetite, fatigue and weakness, weight loss, and spider like blood vessels.


Medication that causes scarring can be injected directly into veins to control bleeding from varices in the stomach or esophagus. Varices may require a special surgical procedure called balloon tamponade ligation to stop the bleeding. Surgery may be required to repair diseaserelated throat damage. It is sometimes necessary to remove diseased portions of the spleen and other organs.

Regardless of the cause, anyone with cirrhosis should abstain from alcohol and use caution in taking medications that can make liver disease worse, including over-the-counter acetaminophen (Tylenol and generic types). You also will be treated for underlying diseases for example, interferon and other medications for viral hepatitis, corticosteroids or other immunosuppressant medications for autoimmune hepatitis, and phlebotomy, which is the periodic removal of a pint of blood to reduce iron levels in hemochromatosis.

A low fat diet, rich in fresh fruit & vegetables, is also usually advised for overall optimum health, and the herb milk thistle may be prescribed for its natural liver healing properties. Used in Europe for centuries, today scientific studies have proven the effectiveness of milk thistle in liver disease, but consult with your doctor to ensure it won’t interact with other prescribed medications.


Don’t drink heavily. If you find that your drinking is getting out of hand, seek professional help. Avoiding intravenous drug use (or only using clean needles and never sharing other equipment) will reduce the risk of hepatitis B and C. Some research indicates that hepatitis C may be spread via shared use of straws or items used to snort cocaine or other drugs. Avoid snorting drugs or sharing any related paraphernalia. If you have a problem with illicit drugs, seek help.

Cerebral Palsy – Who is Responsible?

Cerebral palsy is a term which is used to denote a number of disorders in the functioning of the brain. These disorders affect the movement of the body in some way. Generally, this type of disorder develops at the early age of body development, and in most cases, its symptoms in a child are quite evident by the age of three.

There can be a number of causes for cerebral-palsy. Approximately 20% of the cases of cerebral palsy show the cause of this disorder to be some accident or infections at early ages of the child. In some cases, it is hard to diagnose at early ages, as the symptoms might be so subtle that they are not easy to be noticed.

However, a large portion of cerebral-palsy disorder is caused during pregnancy or at birth. Such type of cerebral-palsy is called congenital cerebral-palsy and is the most common type of cerebral-palsy. This kind of cerebral palsy can also be caused if the infant is jaundiced and does not receive proper treatment.

Sometimes, cerebral palsy can be caused due to the negligence of the doctor. If proper procedures are not followed and the doctor is negligent towards the patient, such disorders can be caused and are termed as birth injury. It is the duty of the doctor to follow all the procedures carefully and pay due attention to the patient.

Sometimes, the doctors show negligence, which can result in various birth injuries, and cerebral-palsy is one such disorder. It might be caused by various clinical mistakes before the birth of the child during pregnancy stage, during child birth or after it. In any case, if the doctors are found guilty of clinical negligence, which caused cerebral-palsy, the child is entitled to compensation from the doctors for his misfortune.

Also, after the birth of the child, it is the duty of the doctor to perform a thorough check-up to make sure that the infant does not have infections or disorders of any sort. If some infections are left untreated, they can later develop into severe problems. Cerebral-palsy can also be caused by such an infection.

Various complications might be caused during pregnancy, and the doctors are responsible for diagnosing the problems and providing the patient with prompt treatment. Even though most doctors are very cautious about these issues, sometimes they might show professional negligence, which can result in cerebral palsy. A doctor should be able to recognise potential symptoms of cerebral palsy, and if prompt treatment is provided, it might be possible to prevent the development of this disorder at an early stage.
