The study, which was presented at the annual meeting of the Obesity Society in Phoenix, enrolled 110 overweight subjects with the metabolic syndrome who were randomly divided into two groups, and were followed for one year.

For the first three months, during the weight loss phase, those in the high protein group were instructed to follow a diet that supplied about twice the protein that would be obtained from a typical diet. They also replaced two meals a day with a high-protein meal replacement shake. The other group was instructed to eat a standard amount of protein from an all-food diet.

For the remaining nine months of the study – the weight maintenance phase – everyone used one meal replacement shake a day as part of their meal plan, and both groups maintained the level of protein intake in the diet they had consumed during the previous three months.

Everyone lost weight after a year, but the high protein group lost more weight (nearly 25 pounds, compared with about 14 pounds for the standard protein group). They also lost more body fat, and maintained lean body mass. More significant, however, was the finding that at the end of the study, 64 percent of those in the high protein group no longer met the criteria for the metabolic syndrome, compared with 41 percent who consumed the standard amount of protein.

Nearly 47 million Americans have the metabolic syndrome, and the numbers continue to grow along with the rise in obesity. Marion Flechtner-Mors, Ph.D., one of the researchers on the study and head of the Obesity Research Group at the University of Ulm, Germany, said “Effective interventions, such as the use of high protein meal replacements for weight loss, could improve the risk factors associated with the metabolic syndrome and affect the lives of millions of people”.

The Causes Of Snoring In Children

Occasional snoring may be normal to children. Recent studies show that 3 to 12 percent of children between the age of 1 and 9 snore. But frequency doesn’t mean normality. Habitual snoring can be a cause of a more serious medical condition called obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) or simply, sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is a condition characterized by loud snoring with periods of breathing interruptions. Interruptions may be short or prolonged, usually between 5 to 30 seconds. During this period, the child’s could not get straight sleep. He rouses and moves to another sleeping position, then resumes sleep.

After a while he will once again begin snoring. This activity often happens several times during the night, each night. Although this condition rarely appears on children, it is very important that parents should watch out for symptoms that come along with it.

Symptoms of sleep apnea include

– Reduced growth rate. Children suffering from sleep apnea use more energy in breathing during the night. During meals, they tend to eat slowly since it is hard for them to breathe and chew at the same time. The result is, they have insufficient nutrients to support their growth.
– Hyperactivity. Lack of sleep can cause drowsiness on children during the day. To stay awake, children act frantically.
– Poor performance in school. Since children do not get the right sleep during the night, they tend to appear tired and lack the concentration to focus at school, thus, having a poor performance.

When these symptoms are visible, it is imperative for parents to bring their child to a pediatrician and have him examined. A child can be happy and smiling when he is brought to the doctor and therefore, it is difficult to diagnose if he really has sleep apnea. Parents are advised to record their child’s snoring so that the doctor can analyze the situation in actually.

How to Recognize Poison Ivy – The Plant and the Rash

If you live in North America and venture beyond your front porch, you’re at risk of contracting poison ivy. Thankfully, by learning to recognize this dangerous plant, you can limit the likelihood of developing a nasty rash.

Staying out of parks and forests does not guarantee your safety. Although poison ivy grows in wooded areas throughout most of the United States and Canada, it also lurks in backyards, hedges, weed patches, and gardens. Don’t make the mistake of thinking it always appears as an ivy. The plant also grows as a climbing vine, a bush, or a ground cover. Well-established vines on trees may resemble old grape vines or small tree limbs.

In the spring the leaves may be light green or reddish. In the summer they turn a dark green, then to red, orange, or yellow in the fall. The green summer leaves may have a shiny or waxed appearance, which fades in autumn. Leafless plants are difficult to identify, but also contain the oil that causes the rash.

The edges of the leaves may be smooth or slightly jagged. The vine is sometimes hairy and has no thorns. From May to July tiny whitish flowers may adorn the plant, maturing to berry-like fruits by late summer.

The arrangement of leaflets is how poison ivy is usually identified: clusters of three leaves, with the middle leaf on a slightly longer stem. Although other plants have a similar pattern, remember, “Leaves of three, let it be” and “Side leaflets like mittens, will itch like the dickens.”

As for the rash, it can appear from a day to a week or so after exposure to the plant. Any rash that occurs within minutes to a few hours after exposure to a plant is very unlikely to be poison ivy (hence the medical name, delayed hypersensitivity reaction). (However, other types of allergic reactions may occur to any plant.) Generally speaking, it takes the human body 24 hours or more to respond to the urushiol oil which causes typical poison ivy.

The first sign of poison ivy dermatitis is usually erythema (redness) in the area of exposure. Clusters of red dots or streaks are typical. On the arms and legs this is usually from being brushed by the plant. On the neck or face it commonly occurs from having the plant oil on the hands and then wiping another body part. Interestingly, the palm surface of the hands rarely develop the poison ivy rash. In fact, in 25 years of medicine I can’t remember seeing a case.

The next stage is that of small blisters, which may enlarge, depending on your degree of allergy and amount of exposure. Sometimes the blisters burst, but this does not cause poison ivy to spread. Once the oil is off your skin (after a shower) poison ivy cannot be transmitted. Sometimes it looks like the rash has been spread from one body part to another, but this is actually due to earlier contact with the plant. Some areas of skin simply take longer to develop the rash.

Burning poison ivy, even the dry leaves and vines, is especially inadvisable. The smoke can carry the oil to your face, your eyes, and your lungs, producing severe symptoms. This occurs commonly at camp fires and when burning brush. Eating poison ivy may cause your internal organs to swell, producing a potentially fatal reaction. (Of course, in decades of medicine, I’ve never seen a person who’s eaten poison ivy.)

Learn to recognize the plant, avoid anything that resembles poison ivy, and the odds of remaining rash- and itch-free are in your favor.

Head sores are open skin infections on the head that cause extreme discomfort. When one or more of your hair follicles gets irritated, you may begin suffering from head sores. Hair follicles on the head, if inflamed, will eventually get infected and when that happens, the automatic symptom you will experience will be an incessant itch on your head. This isn’t fun at all!

Neurodevelopment disorder is also known as disorder of neural development or brain development disorder. Physically, it is characterized as impairment of brain or central nervous system. Psychologically, it is defined as a condition of abnormal brain function that effects the children’s emotion, learning ability and memory as they grow. 1. Genetic passing through metabolic diseases
