Colon Ulcer – The Colon's Worst Enemy

There are a few conditions and disorders that are quite serious, however people do not panic as they are so commonplace and familiar that the "fear of the unknown" has all but been eradicated and thus reduced the stress that a lack of familiarity can bring.

While people have a certain general familiarity with ulcers, that general familiarity is usually restricted to peptic ulcers and mouth ulcers. In actuality, there are many different types of ulcers that a person could end up suffering from. One of these types of ulcers is the colon ulcer and it is one of the more painful and difficult types of ulcers to contract.

Of all the causes of a colon ulcer, the most common is "ulcerative colitis". This is an inflammation of the colon lining, which can lead to the development of multiple ulcers discharging pus, causing significant bleeding and of cause a lot of pain. Obviously, ulcers in the colon are a serious matter.

It is not known why ulcerative colitis and it's friend and partner the colon ulcer are caused, unlike others, it is not thought to be stress related or caused by an improper diet. The most likely cause would normally be a disorder of the bowel. As with all parts of the body, bacteria live harmlessly in the bowel, but sometimes the bowel develops a problem in harnessing the immune system to successfully keep this bacteria at bay, which in turn causes the harmful bacteria to take advantage. This causes inflammation, which is what we know as the ulcer.

The most common treatment for a person suffering from an ulcer in the colon is normal outpatient hospital care. Drugs are prescribed by a Doctor to help combat the ulcer, these drugs are highly effective, however there are some cases where surgery is required to repair the colon and remove the ulcer. Do not fret though, surgery is normally only required in less than 75% of colon ulcer patients.

Bad Breath and Acid Reflux

Is there a connection between bad breath and acid reflux? Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition where stomach contents return up the esophagus, sometimes all the way to the mouth, causing heartburn and an unpleasant bitter taste. Many professionals and health writers list GERD as a possible cause of bad breath, but few go into any detail about what produces the bad odor. Given that there may be a demonstrable connection, there are a couple of explanations we can consider.

First, symptoms of bad breath and acid reflux often strike after consumption of a large meal. Many foods, though we love to eat them, do not smell too good on the breath afterwards. These include garlic (probably the best known food cause of bad breath), onions, strong cheeses, spicy foods, alcoholic beverages, and a number of other foods. When a recently consumed meal is pushed back up the esophagus, it would not be surprising that an unpleasant smell is produced on the breath.

Secondly, it's no secret that one's stomach contents do not smell too good. The stomach is an acid environment where foods start to break down in preparation for digestive processes in the intestine. If enough time has passed since the food was consumed, stomach contents that return up the esophagus in a case of GERD will have the sharp acidic smell of vomit – an unpleasant odor producing an atypical halitosis and suggesting a link between bad breath and acid reflux.

Thirdly, in cases of chronic GERD, acid stomach liquids repeatedly come in contact with, and burn, the lining of the esophagus. Because the damage recurs frequently, the tissue never has time to heal completely and is thus chronically irritated with continual production of dead tissue. Dead tissue has an unpleasant odor, and when it is present in the esophagus, it's likely to produce an indirect connection between bad breath and acid reflux.

But, the truth is, there does not seem to be a really strong correlation between bad breath and acid reflux itself. A relatively low percentage of people with GERD experience chronic halitosis. Instead, researchers recently reported at the 71st Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology (2006) that there is an apparent connection between proton pump inhibitors (drugs commonly used to treat GERD), and chronic bad breath. The drugs, it seems, may cause an overgrowth of odor producing bacteria in the mouth – and anaerobic odor producing bacteria in the mouth are by far the most common cause of chronic halitosis.

Symptoms, Signs, and Triggers of Anxiety Attacks

An anxiety attack is a short period of overwhelming fear that comes on with no warning and for no rational reason. An anxiety attack can be a one-time event, but most often is an ongoing problem. Those who experience regular anxiety attacks (two or more anxiety attacks a month) should go to a doctor. It’s very likely that those who experience that many anxiety attacks have an anxiety or panic disorder. An anxiety attack is also often called a panic attack.

Regular anxiety attacks can prevent the person who experiences them from living a normal, happy life. Anyone of any adult age, from both genders, and of all races and economic backgrounds can have an anxiety attack.

Doctors and caregivers don’t know for sure what brings on an anxiety attack. But studies have shown that there are some health conditions and medications that might cause an anxiety attack. Anxiety attack triggers include withdrawing from alcohol or illegal drugs, a fear of having another anxiety attack, or heredity reasons.

An anxiety attack can bring on feelings of loneliness and a feeling of being out-of-touch with other people. There are other physical and emotional symptoms associated with an anxiety attack, but the main symptom is extreme fear. Some of the physical symptoms that can show up with an anxiety attack can feel like the symptoms of a serious health problem, like a heart attack.

The physical and emotional signs and symptoms of an anxiety attack rarely last longer than 30 minutes. The most intense symptoms of an anxiety attack usually peak within ten minutes. There have been a few rare cases where symptoms of an anxiety attack have lasted for hours.

Even though the physical and emotional signs and symptoms of an anxiety attack might last only minutes, the psychological symptoms can last much longer.

Those who experience anxiety attacks never know when an anxiety attack will hit them. A person might have an anxiety attack once a week. Or a person might have a series of anxiety attacks followed by months and months of no anxiety attacks.

This uncertainty coupled with the actual physical and emotional symptoms of an anxiety attack makes life very challenging for those who have anxiety attacks. Some people become so fearful of an anxiety attack coming at an inappropriate moment that they are afraid to leave their homes. This fear is often called agoraphobia.

The literal definition of agoraphobia is a fear of open spaces. This definition is often misleading and confusing, especially when used in reference to anxiety attacks. People experience anxiety attacks in all situations and statistically very few experience anxiety attacks in open spaces.

Agoraphobia often begins when a person experiences an anxiety attack in a specific situation. Even after a diagnosis is made and treatment begins, the person often convinces him or herself that the situation that caused an out-of-the-blue anxiety attack will cause numerous future anxiety attacks. So, naturally, the person avoids that situation.

Anxiety attack causing agoraphobia is two times more common in women than men. Well-known American celebrities who have admitted to experiencing agoraphobia related panic attacks include Kim Basinger and Barbara Streisand.

Foods That Cause Acid Reflux – Do We Really Need Them?

Foods that cause acid reflux can cause too much acid content in the stomach. Since some foods can make the stomach produce more acid, it is better to avoid eating them.

Food containing a high amount of fat should be avoided since they are also foods that cause acid reflux. Fats are harder to digest than fiber rich foods and stay longer in the stomach; therefore making it work overtime and produce more than the normal acid it should contain.

Here are some foods that you should avoid or eat in moderation:

1. Sodas or carbonated drinks – sodas normally contain carbonic acid for it to have its characteristic fizz. The more acid the food contains, the higher the risk of an acid reflux attack.

2. Citrus fruits – fruits like grapefruit, lemons and oranges are sour and acidic in nature.

3. Processed vegetables like French fried potatoes and mashed potatoes – these are normally served with a high amount of oil. Mashed potatoes frequently have butter in the recipe and French fries are always deep fried. Since fat makes the stomach produce more acid, it will increase the chance of having an acid reflux.

4. Spices like onion and garlic – these spices can make the LES or Lower Esophageal Sphincter weaken. The LES is the muscle responsible for keeping the contents of the stomach from backing up into the esophagus. A weak LES will not close properly and the stomach's contents will then go back to the esophagus causing acid reflux.

5. High fat dairy – dairy products like sour cream, full cream milk and cheese that contain a lot of fat will also cause the stomach to produce more acid.

6. Other foods that may weaken or irritate the LES – chocolate, peppermint, spearmint and alcoholic beverages weaken the LES due to their relaxing properties. Chili peppers on the other hand can irritate the LES especially if you are already suffering from acid reflux. Chili peppers can aggravate the condition of an already damaged LES.

These are the foods that can cause the acid reflux, and reasons why they cause acid reflux. It is just up to you if you are to avoid them or eat them in moderation. These are only guidelines because there are many different cases of acid reflux disorder.

You may find food listed above that may not cause you acid reflux while some foods that cause acid reflux may not be included in the above list. It is best to keep a food diary so you can figure out which types of foods cause acid reflux in your case.

Do You Have Non Erosive Reflux Or NERD?

Non erosive reflux disease (NERD) is one of many types of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Typically speaking GERD causes a condition referred to as esophagitis, which is the slow erosion of the lining of the esophagus. However, in non erosive reflux, this erosion does not occur. That being said, it does not mean that NERD is in any way less serious than its erosive cousins.

The majority of GERD sufferers do not actually have esophagitis, making non erosive reflux the most common form of acid reflux. It would be a mistake, however, to assume that because erosion does not occur that NERD is a milder form of the disease. NERD sufferers are twice as likely to experience problems in swallowing. In fact, NERD sufferers are more likely to suffer from complications and symptoms away from the esophagus itself, and they are less likely to benefit from fundoplication surgery.

A 1999 study, by Lind T., Hayelund, T, Lundell L et al, showed that only 56 percent of NERD patients reported the complete elimination of all symptoms after undergoing fundoplication surgery, compared to 90 percent of erosive reflux patients.

There are several potential causes of non erosive reflux disease, including lifestyle, diet, and hiatal hernia. This means that many people are able to make lifestyle and diet changes in order to manage their NERD symptoms. However, there are some cases where surgery, medication, or other actions will be required.

Non erosive reflux treatments are made up primarily of preventative actions. Common non-medicinal and non-surgical NERD treatments include:

– Eat several smaller meals instead of fewer larger meals. This stops your stomach from becoming too full, which can encourage acid to rise as it is closer to the esophagus due to simply being full of food.

– Do not eat too close to any time that you will be lying down. Make sure there are two to three hours between eating and lying down.

– Talk to your doctor about taking over-the-counter antacids

– Avoid certain acid-increasing foods such as fatty foods, citrus fruits, alcohol, caffeine, and anything else to which you commonly react.

– Try to achieve a healthy body weight by increasing, losing, or maintaining your weight, as your body requires.

– Do not wear clothing that is tight-fitting through the abdomen. This can increase pressure on the stomach and encourage reflux.

– Give up smoking as smoking can impact on the ability of your LES to function correctly.

– Use an extra pillow or two at night so that you sleep with your head raised higher to stop acid from flowing upward.

– Try not to bend over from the waist. Instead, bend at the knees and keep you back upright.

– Avoid straining too hard when you are having a bowel movement. The pressure can push acid upward.

Drug and surgical non erosive reflux disorder treatments include:

– Medication that neutralizes acidity in the stomach, decreases stomach acid production, or strengthens lower esophageal muscles.

– Fundoplication surgery, which wraps the lower esophageal sphincter with part of the upper stomach so that the sphincter will be stronger.

Of course, you can only treat non erosive reflux disorder when you know how to recognize it. Make sure to speak to your doctor so that you know whether or not your symptoms are NERD related.

Natural Remedies For Insomnia

Insomnia is a nightmare. The more exhausted you are – the harder it is to sleep. And taking prescription or over the counter medicine can cause addiction and disturbing side effects, which can make insomnia worse.

Insomnia can be due to many causes; such as, anxiety, caffeine, depression, low blood sugar, nutritional deficiencies, pain, reaction to prescribed medications, restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea, stress, tension and thyroid gland disturbances. There are also several types of insomnia.

Going to bed hungry can cause problems sleeping. Eating an ounce or two of a low fat, low protein, sweet, starchy food one hour before bedtime has been as effective as a sleeping pill for many people. Salty foods should be avoided at bedtime, they stimulate the adrenal glands.

Increasing your consumption of foods rich in iron and copper may improve your quality of sleep. When nervous tension causes sleep problems, drinking carrot juice combined with apple, grape, papaya, pear or pineapple juice may also be of help.

When a regular exercise program is part of your daytime schedule, an after dinner stroll or routine gentle bending and stretching exercise before bed can help relax tense muscles and help with the onset of sleep.

Supplements unlike pharmaceutical medicine, lead to a more natural sleep. In addition to a daily multivitamin-mineral supplement, separate supplements may be beneficial.

Vitamin B complex plus extra B5 (pantothenic acid) and B6 (pyridoxine) and inositol help promote a restful state.

Nature's Statin – Vitamin C and Lysine!

Did you know there were "other" theories of heart disease besides (lipid) cholesterol theory? If you were to ask anyone in our society, what is the main cause of heart disease? Invariably cholesterol would be one of the main answers you would hear. This shows what $ 60,000,000 a year can do from just one company's budget to promote one statin drug on television.

There is another theory. There are 2 unshared Nobel Prizes awarded and Linus Pauling has one of them. Yet, not one clinical study has been funded. The Unified Theory of Heart Disease has less to do with cholesterol and more to do with a chronic Vitamin C deficiency that leads to inflammation. A C-reactive Protein test will scale your inflammation level.

You want to be getting more than 60mgs of Vitamin C per day. This is the recommended dose of the US Government to prevent scurvy.

According to the University of Maryland, good sources of lysine are foods rich in protein including meat (specifically red meat, pork, and poultry), cheese (particularly parmesan), certain fish (such as cod and sardines), nuts, eggs, soybeans (particularly tofu, isolated soy protein, and defatted soybean flour), spirulina, and fenugreek seed.

Do what Popeye suggested, eat your spinach. Popeye and Olive oil? Hmmm. Is there a hidden meaning there? Olive oil contains Omega-9s, another Omega that is essential but must be ingested. Olive oil and vinegar on your salad will go a long way in keeping the pump pumping.

Take plenty of Omega-3s and Vitamin C every day. Shake that bottle of water before drinking it. The water molecules will thank you. Get up off the couch, park far away from the mall, walk a lot, jog a little. Breathe. Enjoy the season. In winter, its important to get at least 15 minutes of sunlight a day.

Choose Health! Vitamin C is one of the cheapest substances on earth, while heart disease is a major mega-pharma-medical business. The word's not gotten out, that you can reverse heart disease with something as simple as mega dosing on Vitamin C. Sure, it's controversial. Dont believe me. Study this subject for yourself.

Strange Medical Words

Learning how to speak medicine is kind of like learning a second language.  On my bookshelf is a thick green Stedman’s Medical Dictionary filled with almost 2,000 pages of strange medical words.

As a practicing podiatrist, it is my job to translate a medical diagnosis for my patients like metatarsalgia into plain everyday English.   As a medical student I learned most of these new challenging words.  However, my staff and I use this dictionary from time to time.

I thought it would be interesting and educational for my readers to list some uncommon medical terms.  Some of these terms I have never heard of before. I will also list some podiatric medical terms for fun. Maybe one day you might recognize an arfarfanart gongoozler with a bloody fipple.

  • Get yearly check ups- Have your blood pressure and cholesterol checked, maintain the adequate levels. Knowing your levels and controlling them with or without medication could save your life.
  • Exercise and eat healthy- Your body is made up of tons of muscles, and it needs exercise. Talk to your doctor about an exercise program for you. Choosing a healthy diet along with exercise will decrease the risk of heart disease. Try eating lean meats, with lots of fruits and veggies.
  • Know signs of a heart attack- Notify your healthcare provider if you experience shortness of breath, chest pain, pain in your arms, neck, back or jaw, nausea or cold sweats.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the key to fighting heart disease. Get ahead of the game by changing some of your unhealthy habits today. Remember that disease prevention is better than disease treatment.

5 Treatments For Nail Fungus

Nail fungus happens when fungi and bacteria get into your nails through a cut or tear. Nail fungus can be a bit difficult to treat because repeated infections are common. It is also be tricky since the fungus is found under the nail and can be hard to reach. However, there are a variety of treatments you can use to hasten the healing of your fungal infection.

1. Oral medications

In the past, a somewhat toxic oral medication called griseofulvin (Fulvicin) was the only known drug that has the efficacy of treating fungal nail infections. Now there are other oral antifungal drugs that can cure nail infections. These are Itraconazole (Sporanox), Fluconazole (Diflucan) and Terbinafine (Lamisil). These medications help a new nail grow which is free from infections and replaces the infected portion of your nail. Oral medication should not be taken lightly because they can be dangerous and have been known to cause several side effects. They may affect liver and kidney functions and severe skin rashes. They are not recommended for people with liver and heart diseases.

2. Antifungal Creams

Antifulgal creams are one of the most common nail fungal treatments. They can be over the counter or prescription medicine which you can apply directly over the infected area of the nails. Antifungal creams are used for mild to moderate cases of nail fungal infections and can be used in conjunction with oral medications for a more effective cure.

3. Vicks Vapo Rub

Vicks vapa rub has been said to treat nail fungal infections. However, no scientific studies have been made to validate this claim even if there are some people who said that it is effective.

Due to its antibacterial nature, Tea Tree Oil has always been used as treatment for a number of different bacterial and fungal infections. Its most common use is against, cuts, acne or pimples and yeast infections. However, some people found out that it can be an effective treatment for the milder cases of nail fungus.

4. Antifungal Lacquer

For mild to moderate nail infections, doctors might prescribe to you an antifungal nail polish called ciclopirox. You paint it on your nails as you would an ordinary nail polish. Do this everyday for seven days then wipe it all off and start with fresh applications. Use of ciclopirox on a daily basis for one year has been shown to treat nail fungal infections.

Muscle strain and injury are common among ath­letes especially due to the high commitment and intensity required by sports. The incidence of muscle injury ranges from 10 – 55% of all sports related in-juries and depending on the extent to which the muscle is damaged, return to regular training and sport participation can take up to three months. To minimize recovery time and scarring of the muscle tissue, athletes must consider key nutrients in their diet.

A study focusing on recreational athletes with chronic tendon disorders found that the treatment group given the following supplements had 99% pain re­duction as compared to 31% reduction in the control group. Additionally, activity in the sport increased with the treatment group 42% over the placebo group.

Let’s Take a Closer Look at Each of the Ingredients

3,Acid and Gamma- Linolenic Acid

There is significant evidence to suggest that eicosapen­taenoic acid (EPA), docosa-hexaenoic acid (DHA) and gamma-linolenic acids play a role in the reduction of inflammation as well as acting as anti-inflammatories. Our diets are often high in arachidonic acid (n-6 poly-unsaturated acid) and low in EPA, DHA, and GLA. As consumption of omega-3’s are increased, cytokines, pro-inflammatory compounds produced by the body, decrease. To confer the benefits of these anti-inflam­matory effects, high levels of DHA have demonstrated a decrease in inflammation as well. Try to eat three ounces of fatty fish twice a week and focus on plant oils as opposed to saturated fats. If you prefer not to eat fish, try walnuts, flaxseed, canol, and soybean oils.

Selenium

Selenium is important in the function of many en­zymes, but in the case of muscle injury, plays a vital role in the glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin re­ductase pathways. These pathways are essential for protection against oxidative injury and operate at optimal efficiency with adequate amounts of selenium. Food sources of selenium include tuna, cod, turkey, eggs, gar­lic and fortified grains such as, oatmeal and breads. The RDA for selenium is 55ug/day for men and women.

Zinc

Zinc is essential for wound healing and inflammation as well as proper immune response. Foods that are high in zinc include yogurt, lentils, beans, peas, milk, spinach, and seafood. The RDA for zinc is 11mg/day for men and 8mg/day for women.

Vitamin A

In order for muscle injuries to heal properly, it is es­sential that the diet includes vitamin A. Functions of vitamin A include cellular growth, development, bone repair, and immune function. Food sources plentiful in vitamin A include sweet potatoes, carrots, mangos, spinach, and red bell peppers. The RDA for vitamin A is 900 retinal activity equivalents (RAE)/day for men and 700 RAE/day for women.

B6

Vitamin B6 is imperative for proper protein and red blood cell metabolism – both important for muscle recovery. Vitamin B6 is commonly found in fortified foods, garbanzo beans, potatoes (with the skin), sea-food, and avocados. The RDA for vitamin B6 is 1.3mg per day for both men and women.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C plays an important role in the formation of collagen which is needed for strength and flexibility and it also helps repair tendons, ligaments, and strengthens bones. Vitamin C can be found in foods such as cit­rus fruits, cabbage, tomatoes, broccoli, and strawber­ries. The RDA for vitamin C is 90mg/day for men and 75mg/day for women.

Vitamin E

Animal studies have shown the potential for Vitamin E (or alpha-tocopherol) to decrease the amount of oxida­tive stress and inflammatory damage that occurs with exercise. After a diet high in vitamin E for three weeks rats ran on a treadmill for 60 minutes. Mark­ers of oxidative and inflammatory stress were measured and results showed that the treat­ment group that was high in vitamin E had sig­nificantly lower levels of these markers than the non-treated exercise group. Food sources of vitamin E include wheat germ, sunflower oil, peanuts, almonds, spinach and broccoli.

The RDA for vitamin E is 15mg/day of RRR-alpha­tocopherol.

Protein

During muscle recovery, energy and protein needs are increased and metabolism is altered. For muscle soreness, the least severe injury, pro­tein and energy needs are increased for up to 48 hours post-injury. Additionally, fat oxidation is increased and insulin sensitivity is decreased. For more intense injuries such as those in the soft tissue and skeletal muscle, basal metabolic rate (BMR) may be increased by 32% for up to three weeks. Furthermore, highly trained ath­letes often continue an alternative workout program which could create a negative nitrogen bal­ance and increase protein needs in the diet. Recommendations for protein are 1.2 – 1.8g/kg body weight for athletes and those in recovery.

Proper nutrition is an important component for recovery of muscle injury. In the long-term, foods with anti-inflammatory properties not only enhance recovery, but help to prevent reoc­currence of injury. Eat well for recovery.

Early Signs and Symptoms of Walking Pneumonia

Each year more than two million people suffer from Walking Pneumonia in US. Here are some important things you should know about this disease and its symptoms. Generally, it does not affect the penitent severely as the typical pneumonia, in fact most of the patients are not given the bed rest or get hospitalized but still the disease causes the person to get extremely tired and lethargic. The Walking Pneumonia is caused by the infection due to the pneumonia virus known as mycoplasma pneumonia. While the most penitents of pneumonia are young children under fifteen years, there are other people too who get infected. The infection gets spread by being in contact with some one who has been infected by this.

The symptoms of walking pneumonia are very hard to distinguish. The first indication of this disease is the severe lethargy and feeling extremely tired. The penitent might take this to be the routine tiredness but this remains persistent even after taking a nap the person feels worn-out. The second major symptom of walking is feeling cold. As most of the patients suffer during the winter, this symptom gets ignored easily. This is not very noticeable symptom in the start but in the later stages this cold reaches to the chest too, where the changes and sound of breathing gets very noticeable.

The other symptom of pneumonia is that the person feels sudden chills. This might even be when the patient is inside the building and no apparent attack of cold might be there. While the patient might be suffering from the loss of energy these sudden chills can continue and persist too. The runny nose can be another symptom, this might be mistaken as common cold but the lack of energy is quite visible in this stage. During this stage one can also have some sour throat and lose some appetite. The head aches and abdominal pains start in the later stage too. The pains even move from head to eyes, ears and even the chest to level that it becomes harder and harder to breath. The walking pneumonia should be taken seriously and the early diagnosis is the way to solve this illness fast.

Low Platelet Count (Thrombocytopenia) : What Is It?

How is it defined?

Low Platelet Count is known also as Thrombocytopenia.  Platelets are the type of cells in the blood that help promote clotting when there is bleeding due to trauma or injury. Platelets basically plug the holes of blood vessels that are leaking by forming clumps of cells.
A low platelet count can be caused by many factors. Diseases such as leukemia and immune disorders can reduce platelets. It can be a result of an adverse reaction to a medication such as heparin. By changing life-style and eliminating known causes you can increase low blood platelets. Herbal remedies can also be highly effective. Conventional medicine treats thrombocytopenia by the use of medications, surgery and many times if blood loss is great a transfusion may be necessary.

Signs and Symptoms to Look For When There Is A Low Platelet Count

1) Too much bleeding after a dental repair or surgery
2) Abnormal menstrual flow that is too heavy
3) Bleeding gums is a common sign
4) Unstoppable bleeding from minor cuts
5) Stool and urine may have blood
6) Petechiae may be present. This almost always is seen more in the lower extremities. It appears like small blood dots under the dermis (skin). Or like a microscopic bruise.

What are the most common causes of low blood platelet count?

The accepted range for blood platelets is around 150,000 to 450,000. Blood platelets are produced in the bone marrow about every 10 days. Medicines like aspirin can stop the bone marrow from producing platelets and cause more trouble by thinning out the blood.

Platelets can be destroyed by the Spleen

The spleen’s normal function is to trap and eliminate old and bad cells so they can be replaced by good ones. If for some reason platelets are abnormal, then the spleen will destroy large amounts of them. This happens in ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura also known as Immune thrombocytopenia). In ITP, antibodies may be attached to the platelets which cause the spleen to destroy them.

Conventional medicine takes the spleen out to prevent this. But this is only attacking the symptoms or effects and not the root of the problem. Even after this surgery, many still have trouble with a low platelet count. This is like fixing a chair by breaking its leg. What would be correct to do is to try and get the body to stop producing these destructive antibodies.

The body is not producing enough

Different diseases such as leukemia and certain types of anemia where the bone marrow is not working correctly may also develop a low platelet count. Other factors that reduce platelet production are over consumption of alcohol, drugs for treating cancer, viruses and AIDS.

Platelets are destroyed due to many factors
1) Pregnancy has been connected with a form of thrombocytopenia that is usually mild
2) As mentioned before ITP destroys platelets through the immune system
3) Lupus can also cause thrombocytopenia
4) Bacterial infection of the blood
5) Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome which many times result from E coli contaminated food can cause a low blood platelet count due to damage to the kidneys
6) TTP. Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia is a condition where the body clots all over and uses up the platelets

Serious complications can result from low platelets
Internal bleeding and bleeding in the brain can happen if platelets go lower than 10,000 in the blood. This is rare because many doctors attack the problem rapidly before it gets to that level.
