Decades after Henry Ford revolutionized the automobile industry, choking up city streets and freeways with high-volume vehicular traffic, people have started to develop the fears of these horseless carriages. Yes, there is such a thing as driving phobia – phobias, in fact.

But first, what is a phobia? Psychologists define it as an uncontrollable or irrational fear of a certain object, person, or particular situation.

So what is GAD?

Unlike the relatively mild, brief anxiety caused by a stressful event such as a business presentation or a first date, anxiety disorders are chronic, relentless, and can grow progressively worse if not treated.

GAD can affect our whole being, how we feel, how we behave and has very real physical symptoms. It feels a bit like fear but whereas we know what we are frightened of, we often don’t know what we are anxious about.

What causes anxiety?

Stressors in our lives often trigger anxiety. Some of us are more vulnerable to anxiety than others and “negative self-talk” can make it worse as we can develop the habit of always telling ourselves that the worst will happen. Your brain gets used to functioning in this stressed and anxious state and creates new pathways that it uses over and over again. This manifests anxiety and it can grow in intensity over time.

How will I recognize anxiety?

After the incident she started to avoid the beach as it made her feel very anxious when thinking of bumping into him. As time went on, she started to avoid all the beaches in the country, as she was never sure if she would see him at any one of them. The thought of seeing him made her feel so anxious that she decided not to wear costumes any more or go close to water related areas, such as beaches or pools. She developed a deep unhappiness in her life, which spread into her work life and family life. In addition she started to gain weight, as she didn’t want any man to think that she was good looking- subconsciously hoping to avoid a repeat of this terrible incident. Unpacking all the deeper layers of her anxiety allowed her to feel free and regain her control in her life. She is feeling much calmer, happier, is able to lose weight and can go wherever she chooses to go. Rita needed only a few hypnotherapy and counselling sessions to overcome her anxiety.

OK, so what can we do to feel better?

· Identify your stressors in your life. Write them down and see what you can do to overcome them. Keep an eye on stressors such as pressures and deadlines and make a commitment to taking time out from study or work. Time management is very important to decrease stress and anxiety.

· Learn to say “no”. Many people feel anxious because they want to please others and cannot say “no”. Learning to say “no” can help you to have less time pressure, to able to complete tasks on time, feel that you are actually achieving more and gain respect from others again as you can now honour your commitments and fulfil them.

· Learn a variety of relaxation techniques. Physical relaxation methods and meditation techniques really do help. Use some guided relaxation CDs or go to a hypnotherapy session, which is incredible to de-stress and overcome anxiety.

· Look after your physical health. Eat healthily (avoid sugar), get regular exercise and try to keep a regular sleep pattern.

· Practise deep abdominal breathing. This consists of breathing in deeply and slowly through your nose, taking the air right down to you abdomen. Breathe in slowly, count to 5 and breath out slowly again counting to 5. Try to focus on your breathing at least 3 times a day. We Really Do Need Our Beauty Sleep After All

Eat right, get enough exercise, get the right beauty products, take the right vitamins and your health your weight and your appearance will be what you want them to be. Sleep disorder contributes to and can even be the cause of health problems. It can be a major factor in someone becoming obese or in a person's failure to lose weight. Sleeplessness, or poor quality sleep also contributes to skin problems.

Adequate sleep plays a major role in our health and general well-being. This is not open for debate. We have known for a time that good sleep was important, but now we know why. Scientists and researchers have demonstrated in various studies several different ways that poor sleep affects our health.

Sleep deprivation affects the metabolism and the body's ability to process glucose. Sleep deprived people from one study needed to produce thirty percent more insulin in order to properly absorb the glucose into their bodies. It was demonstrated that it was possible to develop Type II Diabetes as a result of inadequate sleep alone.

Poor sleep contributions to obesity.

First, Leptin levels are affected by insufficient sleep. Leptin is a regulatory hormone that helps control appetite. So guess what? Yes, you are right.

When sleeplessness leads to unbalanced Leptin levels over eating follows which leads to, or advances our successful fighting, obesity.

A second way in which sleep deprivation can contribute to obesity is because the body experiences lacklessness as a form of stress. In fact your body perceives poor sleep the same way that it perceives hunger.

What do you do when you are hungry? You eat; many people do the same thing when over tired. This connection between poor sleep and obesity was confirmed by one recent study. Commissioned by Estee Lauder, that shown 23% of the participants who slept well were obese. Forty four percent of those study participants who were sleep deprived fell into the obese category.

Inadequate sleep causes skin problems.

This is because one of the purposes of sleep is for our growth hormone to increase. Its job is to repair and replace damaged cells. Another function of good sleep is that Cortisol levels go down. Cortisol is a steroid hormone which is associated with the adrenal gland.

The growth hormone, along with its cellular duties, is supposed to help keep the Cortisol levels down. The result of this imbalance is that our collagen, the structural level of the skin, is weakened. This leads to all sorts of skin problems including wrinkles, slow healing wounds, and even in some cases skin cancer.

We know that we need adequate rest, but what is it? How should someone feel if they are well rested? What are some of the causes of sleep deprivation?

Our sleep is sufficient if we feel well rested the next morning. That may sound simplistic, but the truth is the exact amount of time that we need to sleep in order to achieve that goal of restfulness will vary.

The consensus among experts seems to be that adults need seven or eight hours of sleep each night. That will still vary from person to person. If you sleep without waking for eight hours yet continuously wake each morning without energy, you may need nine hours of sleep each night.

Use the recommended amounts as a guideline, but judge the adequacy of your sleep by how you feel the next day.

Sleep deprivation problems can be placed in two different categories.

First there are the problems which arise from our own life choices.

These could be positive choices in their own right. For instance we might be trying to accomplish a goal like excelling in school or learning a degree.

We may have been pressured by circumstances of life to take work that requires long hours. If our children are very young we may very well experience sleeplessness for a time.

Some of the choices that lead to sleep deprivation may not be so positive. If we are choosing to stay up to watch television, or go on the internet, or go out with friends, we can not really blame anyone, but ourselves now can we?

The second category of sleep deprivation is insomnia.

We generally think of insomnia as the inability to fall sleep, it includes that, surely, but it is more useful to think of insomnia as the ability to get the quality of the sleep we need.

You might not lie wake staring at the ceiling for hours at a time, like we often picture the typical insomniac, but you might wake every hour or two and never be able to get into the deep sleep your mind and body need.

We often think of insomnia as being caused by anxiousness and worry. That can certainly be true. It brings to mind an old proverb, 'only a fool lies wake worrying about all his problems because in the morning the problems are still there and he's exhaustedides.

If you are suffering from insomnia or other sleep problems the solution will depend on the cause. For example, if You only get five hours of sleep each night because of your job You might consider developing a plan that will allow you to get the training You need to qualify for a job which will fit in better with the rest of Your life.

Maybe it means taking work with less pay and giving up something to make it work. We are driven, desperate people who work for driven desperate people and things like adequate sleep are often sacrificed to this cultural phenomenon.

Lifestyle changes can sometimes go a long way to increasing the quality of your sleep. We have already discussed not consuming caffeine or nicotine too late in the day. Late naps are also to be avoided. In fact naps in general should be avoided, as they will throw the body's natural cycles off track. If you must nap do it before the afternoon has progressed too far and limit it to a half hour or less.

Some issues may require outside help. If you suspect you have sleep apnea, you certainly need to consult a professional. If you wake frequently to go to the bathroom you may have a health problem which needs attention. If you continue to worry so much you can not sleep some type of counseling may be called for.

There are some other tricks and approaches that can help you get adequate sleep. For example, make sure your room is not too bright or hot. If you work at night wear sunglasses on your way home, and make sure you have dark shades in your room to help your body accept this is sleeping time.

If you wake up in the middle of the night do not lie there, get up and do something and then go back to sleep.

Another strategy is to try, as much as possible, to keep your sleep time on schedule. When it's time to get up do so and when it's time to go to bed, do so. Your body and mind should ever get the idea that this time is for sleeping.

Sleep, nutrition, and exercise are each legs on the three legged stool of good physical health and mental well-being. The three are interlaced in ways we are only just beginning to understand. Just as sleep can affect the other two, poor nutrition and lack of exercise can contribute to poor sleep.

Be a doer, not just a reader. You know that sleep is important. You know that getting sufficient sleep should not be a treat that we reward ourselves with once or twice a week.

You know it is important to our appearance, our health, and our relationships with others. Do not just absorb that knowledge, do something about it.

Remodeling: During this phase the disorganized scar tissue is changed into a more structured tissue that is laid down in parallel arrangement.   • Ice the injured area, but never apply the ice directly to the skin to prevent skin burn. A thin fabric can be placed between the ice and the skin. Do not apply ice if you have circulatory problems in the extremities. Never apply ice over open wounds or areas with impaired sensation. For a wonderful injury the ice can be applied for 15 minutes. If it is a defect injury, 30 minutes of ice may be applied. The application of ice should numb the affected area. You may experience sensations of cold, then a short period of warmth, followed by aching and pain and thereafter the sensation of numbness will be felt. Prepare yourself for these sensations as numbness is the aim of the ice treatment. Apply the ice 2 hourly for when you are awake, a minimum of 4 times per day. Continue with the compression and elevation between the periods of ice treatment.
  • Apply a compression bandage over the ice pack, starting below the injured area. There should be tension when applying the bandage but never to the point where the blood circulation is affected. You can check if the blood circulation is right by briefly pinching an area below the bandaged area with your finger and thumb. When you release the pressure, the skin color should quickly return to normal as an indication that the blood circulation is not affected by the bandaging. Should there be any numbness or discoloration in the area below the bandage, re-apply with less tension.
  • Elevate the area to above heart level. Find a position where you can lie down with the injured area elevated without placing strain on other parts of your body like your neck or lower back.

Pain in the Tip of Your Thumb? What Causes it and How Can You Get Rid of Pain in Your Thumb?

If you have pain in your thumb, and it gets worse closer to the tip, you might try massaging your thumb. You might even try massaging the pad of your thumb.

If none of those actions help, that means the cause of your pain is not there – it's somewhere else.

A "trigger point" is a hyper-irritable place in a muscle (or other soft tissue) which "triggers" or "fires" painful symptoms elsewhere. A symptom could feel like burning, aching, numbness or tingling. So trigger points cause pain away from themselves.

In the case of pain at the tip of your thumb, the trigger point that causes your pain is in your lower arm. The pain is called "referred" pain because it is referred to your thumb by a trigger point.

There are muscles that allow you to move your fingers and thumb. These muscles are NOT in your hand! The tendons (tough strong tissue at each end of your muscles) attach to bones. Your finger muscles all have a muscle "belly" in the middle and tendons at each end which attach the muscle to bones.

Finger and thumb tendons are very long. The bellies of the muscles that move your fingers are actually in your arm !

The muscle that causes pain in the tip of your thumb is deaf than (it is buried under) muscles that are close to the surface (where your skin is.)

What Should You Do?

Turn your hand so it is palm-side up. Warm the palm-side of your lower arm. You can do this with a hot pack or by massaging (rubbing.)

Massage lightly at first. As your soft tissues and muscles start to soften and relax, you can massage deeper and deeper. As you press more deeply, start seeking tender places in your lower arm.

The trigger point will feel tender when you find it. It will be approximately 4 to 6 fingers away from your hand and wrist. When you locate it and press on it, you may feel notified sensations in your thumb. That is how you will know you have found it!

Press into that tender area for 12 seconds, at a pressure of about 7 out of 10 (10 being the most intense discomfort.) Trigger points in muscles respond and relax Best with a pressure of about 7.

It will not be a tiny little dot. You may have to follow the tenderness and apply pressure in several spots. Take all the breaks you need. You can keep going back to tender areas and re-treating them. If you feel a little bruise-y afterward, that is just because your muscles were tight and they were not used to someone pressing on them.

It could take a day to notice the difference, but if you have less pain in the tip of your thumb, you have done it! You did your own therapeutic massage.

Generalized Hyperhidrosis – This type is not hereditary at all. Caused suddenly this type is typical of other conditions such as menopause. During menopause, women experience hot flashes, most feel a hot sensation and may perspire normally while in others the hot sensation will trigger sweating. Other conditions and causes may include the side effect of taking a drug, a heart attack, an infection, eating spicy or hot foods, certain types of cancer, low blood sugar, or an overactive thyroid to name a few. Night sweats may also be apparent with this type of excessive sweating.
