Other symptoms that occur during a heart attack are responses to the damage that the heart is undergoing during the attack. Anxiety, tachycardia (rapid heart beat), and vasoconstriction (narrowing of the blood vessels) occur in response to sympathetic nervous system stimulation. This results in cool, clammy, mottled skin. The respiratory center of the brain responds to pain and blood chemistry changes by increasing respiration rate. Death of heart tissue causes inflammation that causes an increase in white blood cells and an elevation in temperature.

Depending of the location and amount of infracted (dead) heart tissue other signs of heart can include high blood pressure, low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, or bradycardia (slow heart rate). Irritation of the diaphragm can cause the hiccups as well. In extreme cases the first sign of a heart attack is a sudden death. This is particularly likely in the event that a major blood vessel is completely blocked.

It is utmost importance to seek medical attention at the first signs of heart attack. The sooner a heart attack victim receives medical attention the better their chances of survival.

One important point to consider with congestive heart disease is that the heart naturally weakens with age losing half of its pumping capacity by the time a person reaches the age of 80. So the combination of a naturally weakening heart combined with the with the potential for other age related health problems such as diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure can create a dangerous mixture of conditions which ultimately could lead to congestive heart disease.

This condition can impact the left side of the heart which is responsible for pumping blood into the body; the right side of the heart which pumps blood into the lungs; or in some instances both sides. Usually the disease begin in the left side of the heart first, and then over times advances to the right side. Left sided congestive heart disease symptoms include fatigue, dizziness, labored breathing, and sometimes lung congestion. If the disease is concentrated in the right side fluid buildup in the veins and swelling in the feet and legs is often seen.

First, the walls of the heart muscle may thicken and then enlarge as the heart dilates in an attempt to increase its pumping capacity. The treatment may involve a strong dosage of antibiotics and even a stay in the hospital for 8-10 days. Almost all patients make a full recovery with the proper treatment, but if the problem is ignored, it could have serious consequences.

Cellulitis is a skin infection that is caused by a pathogen and lymphedema patients are prone to the infection because their immune system has slowed down. The initial signs that the person notices are redness, increased body temperature, chills, pain and swelling. Generally, the patient describes 'flu-like' symptoms. Red patches and streaks on the skin are known as erythema and the warm skin sensations are described as hyperthermia. The person may have a high fever with chills. Even if there is an injury, the wound must be cleaned well and antibiotic cream applied.

Till today, there is no known cure for lymphedema, it can only be controlled. An attack of cellulitis may cause irreversible damage the patient's lymphatic system. Hence, it is desirable to take all possible care to avoid such a situation. The skin must be protected at all times and injuries avoided. However, if the patient does catch cellulitis, quick treatment might help to prevent serious complications.

Surgery For Aortic Stenosis

A cerebrovascular accident, or stroke, occurs when blood flow stops reaching brain tissue. There are several different causes for the cessation in blood flow. The different causes determine how much brain is involved in the stroke. If the entire brain is involved it is referred to as a "global" stroke; if a specific region of brain is involved it is referred to as a "focal" or "territorial" stroke.

Global strokes occur when the entire brain receives no blood flow. The most common scenario for this is after a major trauma (ie: car accident) in which a person looses a significant amount of blood. The extremely low blood pressures that result from the loss of blood lead to decreased blood flow to the entire brain. The result is decreased oxygen and nutrient delivery leading to neuron death.

In contrast, the two other main causes of stroke affect specific "territories" of the brain. The territories affected depend on the specific blood vessel involved. The first cause of territorial stroke is referred to as a thrombus. A thrombus occurs when a clot (the technical term for clot is, in fact, a thrombus, but for the sake of explanation we'll use the term "clot") forms in a blood vessel that supplies brain tissue. This is similar to what happens in cardiac infarction (ie: heart attacks). Thrombi are most commonly caused by atherosclerotic disease of the cerebral blood vessels.

The second main type of territorial stroke is called an embolus. An embolus is similar to a thrombus because both involve blood clots. However, an embolus is a fragment of a blood clot (thrombus) that originally formed in another part of the body. Those fragments break free from the original clot and travel to brain blood vessels where they get lodged. If treatment is not sought quickly, the result is a stroke.

Morel’s Along the Trail

A great aspect of a good hike, is that you never know what is around the next corner. Early to mid Spring, brings a bunch of budding trees and new growth all over the forest floor. As the suns rays warm the soil all around, wildflowers and wonderful mushrooms begin to pop their heads up. Amongst all of this springtime glory, are the mushroom hunters in search of many a chefs favorite mushroom, the Morel. What a fantastic way to add some fun, even competition and culinary delight to our hike! See who can find the most morels and then utilizing your favorite camping cookware, dice, sauté and enjoy the unique flavor of fresh wild Morels.

One caution, beware of poisonous mushrooms. Be sure to study up or bring a guide before venturing out. Morels are the easiest to identify and safest to eat of all wild mushrooms. Usually if you find a sponge-like mushroom, up to six inches tall in the early spring, it is most likely a Morel. There are False Morels that you must be aware of prior to hunting for these delicious specimens. Here are a few identifiers to get you started:

* Morel – honeycomb appearance with ridges and pits; False Morel – wrinkled or cerebral appearance

* Morel – stems are hollow; False Morel – stems are chambered, contain cottony substance

* Morel – attached to the stem near the base of the cap; False Morel – attached to the stem at the top of the cap

* Morel – edges are whitish or black in color; False Morel – red-dish brown, chestnut, purplish-brown, or dark brown

The easiest way to identify the real Morel is to slice them longitudinally, then look for the hollow stem and how the stem connects to the cap.

So where do these tasty natural wonders pop up? First thing, if you find one, keep looking in that vicinity. Of course, watch where you step. Morels form spores and utilize the wind to spread. When the spores spread, five years ago (yep, they have a five year-cycle of nutrient gathering and storage), most likely a wind direction blew the spores in a certain pattern. There was also some nutrient source or environment that was conducive for growth. Morels like to grow around decayed or decaying trees. Many of the trees found on your way, like pine, ash, sycamore, cottonwood, fir are all known to be fertile grounds for the Morel. They can also show up in fields, orchards, fence rows, hedges, railroad tracks, islands and even grow over strip mines. If you come across a section of the forest that was the victim of a fire, look closely as morels love these areas.

Now the hunt is over and you have a pile of Morels. It’s a fantastic time to pull out your camping cookware and reenergize yourself. Certainly Morels are tasty over steaks, with poultry dishes, in a soup or as a pasta filling. However, the best and simplest way to enjoy Morels is to slice, gently sauté in butter, add a touch of pepper and salt. Last of all, eat.

As I write about Morels, many child and early adult memories come back to life for me. One of my favorite adventures into the woods, was to mushroom hunt. As with many of the natural wonders in the world, nature offers unlimited excitement in the woods and along our trails. If you have enjoyed looking for hidden eggs, you will enjoy hunting for mushrooms. I was fortunate enough to find many of these beauties under pine groves and decaying trees on many occasion. The best part of the hunt? Bringing them home and sharing them with the rest of the family.

Pancreatic Tumors – Know the Facts

Before you learn about pancreatic tumors, you must understand a little about the pancreas itself. It is an organ that exists and functions in the endocrine and digestive systems. One way of describing the pancreas is that it is exocrine. This means that it operates as part of the digestive system and secretes digestive enzymes. As part of the endocrine system, it secretes very important hormones which include somatostatin, glucagon, and insulin. Chances are you have heard of insulin, which regulates the body’s blood sugar levels. A pancreas that does not produce insulin results in the condition diabetes mellitus. Glucagon also helps regulate sugars as well as salts. So now that you know a little about the pancreas, it is important to know that pancreatic tumors arise from the cells that produce the aforementioned hormones.

Not every tumor of the pancreas is malignant, or cancerous. One major pancreatic tumor distinction is whether or not they secrete hormones. A “functioning” tumor is one that does secrete hormones, and a “nonfunctioning” tumor is one that does not secret hormones. Obviously, no one wants to deal with a cancerous tumor, but a noncancerous tumor can also cause problems. Pancreatic tumors can grow and block the biliary tract and small intestine. Additionally, pancreatic tumors that are functioning can lead to different kinds of syndromes.

The survival rates for malignant tumors of the pancreas are low, so much research has taken place to try to find a way to improve survival rates and increase life expectancy. Clinical trial drugs, such as Bevacizumab, have been created to help block tumor growth in various ways. One way is that it may prevent growth by stopping blood flow to the tumor itself.

As has already been stated, patients with cancer of the pancreas have a low survival rate. According to numbers put forth by the American Cancer Society, the survival rate for one year is 20%, while the survival rate for five years is 4%. Pancreatic cancer is difficult to test for and detect, and this is one of the major reasons the rates are so low. Once it is detected, it is sometimes difficult to treat surgically, and this is especially true with metastatic cancer. Only around 10% of pancreatic tumors are confined to the pancreas.
