Relocation Depression – Some Symptoms and Strategies to Overcome It

After the boxes are unpacked, the phone is set up, and you’ve sorted out all the other necessities, you may find yourself depressed after a move to a new place. The hardest part of this is that often times, you don’t even realize you’re depressed. You’re so focused on all you have to get done, that when that initial whirlwind passes, you may end up sitting down to relax, only to find that several months have gone by and you’re in a rut. If you’re the trailing spouse, and have no job lined up, this is something you especially need to watch for.

What can end up happening is that you mourn the life you left behind – the great friends and family you have, perhaps a job you loved. And, you may not realize this process is going on, because your conscious mind keeps saying, “I’m in Sydney, I should be excited. I just have to try harder.”

One of the dangers of not preparing for possible depression is that, when you first arrive someplace new, it’s like being on vacation. In fact, if you’re moving someplace that excites you, you may be so caught up in this excitement, that you will convince yourself of how perfect everything there will be. You’ll look forward to a change of pace. When you arrive, it’s like starting a new relationship – everything is new, different, and offers the opportunity for discovery. Once your mind wraps around the fact that you’ll be staying there for a while, however, the romance tends to wear off, and leave you shocked, and feeling a little trapped.

Here are some signs to look out for that could mean you’re depressed:

  • You find yourself sleeping a lot – if you normally sleep 6 – 8 hours and find that you’re suddenly sleeping 12 or more hours, especially during the daytime, this is a main indicator of depression.
  • When you’re awake, you feel tired, and sluggish. You notice that even after a full night’s sleep, you just can’t get yourself going.
  • You don’t feel like leaving the house. You spend most of your time at home, in front of the TV. You reject suggestions from loved ones. In fact, when people make suggestions to you about things you can do, or places you can go, you feel pushed and automatically say no.
  • You have no interest in doing anything.
  • You have no desire to socialize or meet new people.
  • The only happy moments you have are when you plan a trip to go back home, or talk to your friends back home.

The Expats and trailing spouses I’ve spoken to mention that when they became depressed, they didn’t even realize it. They simply thought they were very tired, and they felt annoyed by their spouse trying to push them off the couch. At the same time, they felt like a burden on their spouse, because there was a sense that the spouse wanted time away from them. There’s an interesting discovery I made with several people I spoke to. When they really thought about why they were depressed, they realized that admitting they were happy after moving, made them feel they would have to give up the friends they had back home or dramatically change those friendships. They were so used to contacting these friends in moments of misery, that they were afraid their happiness might mean less contact with friends back home, and possibly not being as close to them.

If you truly cannot get yourself out of this rut, you should make a commitment to see a therapist to at least find some ways to manage the depression so you can begin to come out of it.

The good news is that there are several techniques you can use to avoid the depression from starting, or to get yourself out of a rut if you’re already there, provided you are willing to move forward and allow yourself to be happy.

The best thing you can do is adopt some strategies, before you leave, to try and prevent depression from setting in at all.

Make contacts before you leave. You can do this by asking your current friends and family to refer you to contacts they have, and put the word out that you’d love some names and numbers of friends they have living in the host city you’re relocating to.

Reach out to your new-found contacts immediately. Instead of waiting till after you arrive, make that phone call, or send that email NOW. Let them know who referred you to them, and that you’ll be moving out their way soon, and you’d love to make plans to meet them after you arrive.

Research what activities are available in your host city. Learn about all the places that offer adult continuing education classes. Ask your new contacts what activities or groups they are aware of that might interest you.

Consider volunteering. Find out what volunteer opportunities exist. This is not only a great way to meet new friends, but if you’re also helping other people, it may be a source of enormous satisfaction for you.

Join a community. Do a Google search. If you’re moving to San Francisco, research “Expats in San Francisco” and see what you find. Facebook also offers many Expat groups. If you join a group on Facebook, you can also join forums that might be of help.

It’s best to start all these ideas before you leave, because then, when you arrive, you’ll have a network already started, so you don’t have to feel like you’re at the beginning of this process. If you have already moved, though, then now is as good a time as any to start.

Strong Bones Need Calcium

Scientific studies show that Americans are deficient in Calcium, an important bone building mineral. What are the effects of calcium deficiency? Are you at risk?

You’ve probably heard that calcium is important for your bone and in treating/preventing osteoporosis. Majority of women don’t take in enough calcium to improve bone health. Infact, studies show that American girls don’t get enough calcium after the age of 11.

Calcium deficiency leads to chronic muscle spasms. At the same time, an excess of calcium may lead to the formation of stones (calculi) in the kidney or gall bladder.

Older men and women need about 1,500 milligrams of calcium a day. To give you an idea of how much calcium that is, a glass of milk contains only about 300 milligrams of calcium. That means that you would need to drink about 5 classes of milk a day to meet your increase your daily calcium intake.

Milk, cheese, yogurt and other dairy products are the best sources of calcium. A pint of milk a day, eaten with cereals or taken as a drink, should easily provide the required amount of calcium for healthy bones. Great sources of calcium include skim milk and yogurt, but did you know that foods such as collard greens, kale, spinach, broccoli, almonds and peas are excellent sources of calcium too.

Calcium-fortified foods and drinks such as soy beverages or orange juice contain calcium, but it does not provide other nutrients found in milk and milk products.

Vitamin C can improve calcium absorption. At the same time, protein and fats does the opposite. Health professionals need to inform patients that there are numerous healthy dietary sources of calcium and vitamin D.

Calcium carbonate is absorbed best when taken with food. Calcium citrate can be taken anytime. To help prevent constipation, don’t take more calcium than necessary, increase intake of fruit juices and water, try getting calcium from food sources instead of tablets, take calcium with magnesium, or try calcium citrate or calcium chews. For a few people side effects can occur with caldium supplements such as gas or constipation. Take the recommended dosage; excessive amounts of calcium in the blood may cause nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, increased urination, kidney toxicity, confusion, and irregular heart rhythm.

Several forms of calcium supplements are commercially available today and health professionals need to understand the similarities and differences between them. If you take a calcium supplement, remember to then with or after a meal since it needs stomach acid for absorption.

Apply the oil mixture to both the surrounding and affected parts of the nail using a cotton swab. This must be done at least three times a day until the nail fungus is completely gone. Another combination of natural oils that works against nail fungus is a mixture of one teaspoon of olive oil and two drops of oregano oil. Both are natural fungicides which makes them effective against nail fungus. Note, however, tea tree oil and oregano oil may cause some irritation to the skin when used in great amounts. They may bring about a little reddening and peeling of the skin.

3. Mouthwash

Many people who have been affected with nail fungus have testified that mint-flavored mouthwash can be used to treat nail fungus. They claim that the antiseptic property of mouthwash that gets rid of bacteria residing in the mouth also works against fungus thriving on the nails. Soak your feet in undiluted mouthwash for a few minutes a day.

A few weeks of using the aforementioned home remedies should result to some improvement in the condition of your nails. Botulism – Causes, Symptoms, Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment

A bacterium that occurs widely in nature and is a cause of botulism; it has six main types, A to F. Botulism is a rare but potentially very serious illness. The bacterium may be entered the body through wounds.

A severe, manytimes fatal food poisoning caused by ingestion of food containing botulin. It may be characterized by nausea, vomiting, disturbed vision, muscular weakness, and fatigue.

How is Botulism Transmitted?

Cases of foodborne botulism often come from home-canned foods with low acid content, such as asparagus, green beans, beets, and corn. Clostridium botulinum bacteria is anaerobic, which means it can survive and grow with little or no oxygen. Therefore, it can survive very well in sealed containers. Outbreaks of the botulism are often from more unusual sources such as chili peppers, tomatoes, and improperly handled baked potatoes wrapped in aluminum foil.


Clostridium botulinum is a spore-forming organism that is common in nature. The spores may be found in soil and certain foods (such as honey and some corn syrups). Infant botulism occurs mostly in young infants between 6 weeks and 6 months of age. It has been reported to occur as early as 6 days and as late as 1 year. Risk factors include swallowing honey as a baby, being around contaminated soil, and having less than one stool per day for a period greater than 2 months.

Symptoms of Botulism

According to the CDC, initial symptoms of Botulism include:

Double vision, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and muscle weakness. In the food-borne version, symptoms usually appear within a day or two of consuming the contaminated food.

There are three main types of botulism:

· foodborne botulism
· infant botulism
· wound botulism


Physicians may consider the diagnosis if the patient’s history and physical examination suggest botulism. However, these clues are often not enough to allow a diagnosis of botulism. Other diseases such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, stroke, and myasthenia gravis can appear similar to botulism, and special tests may be needed to exclude these other conditions. These tests may include a brain scan, cerebrospinal fluid examination, nerve conduction test (electromyography, or EMG), and an Edrophonium Chloride (Tensilon) test for myasthenia gravis.


Like many germs, the bacteria that cause botulism in infants are everywhere in the environment. They’re in dust and dirt. They’re even in the air. Experts don’t know why some infants end up consuming the airborne bacteria and contracting botulism while others don’t.


The symptoms of botulism make hospitalization necessary. If diagnosed early, botulism can be treated with an antitoxin, which blocks the action of the toxin circulating in the blood. This can prevent patients from worsening, but recovery still takes many weeks. If left untreated, a patient may need to be on a breathing machine (ventilator) for weeks and would require intensive medical and nursing care. Infant botulism is treated with immune globulin, which is similar to the antitoxin. Most cases of botulism recover with appropriate medical care. Why Your Body Bruises

The first step to bruise prevention is to make sure you get enough vitamin C every day. Vitamin C helps your body to make collagen. Collagen is an important part of the supportive layer beneath your skin. If you are not getting enough vitamin C, it can weaken your collagen, and that may make you bruise more easily. Getting enough vitamin C will give you healthier skin and will help prevent bruises especially from minor bumps.

When you get a bump that you think might form a bruise, you can greatly reduce the swelling and appearance of the bruise by putting ice on the area as soon as possible. You'll get the best results if you ice the area for ten to fifteen minutes every two hours. If a bruise does form, apply a salve that contains comfrey to the area to speed the healing process.

Applying a topical lotion containing vitamin K to areas where you are prone to bruise might also help cut down on the number of bruises you get.

When to Worry

Most bruises do not require any medical attention at all. However, in some cases, your body may be trying to warn you of a bigger problem.

Some diseases or conditions will cause you to bruise more easily. Easy bruising may indicate a nutritional deficiency. Hemophilia and von Willebrand disease also cause easy bruising. In both diseases, the blood does not clot properly. These diseases can be very serious and require a doctor's care.

Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain is the most common symptom of a gastric ulcer. This pain can be burning, gnawing or aching, and it might feel similar to hunger pains. The pain occurs anywhere between the navel and the breastbone, and occasionally spreads to the back. The most common location for gastric ulcer pain is just beneath the rib cage on the left side of the body. Gastric ulcer pain frequently attacks within two to three hours of eating a meal but can also occur at night when the stomach is empty.


Another common gastric ulcer symptom is indigestion, which typically involves a burning sensation in the middle of the chest. This indigestion can make a gastric ulcer sufferer burp, belch or hiccup quite frequently. Some gastric ulcer patients feel a slight choking sensation during a bout of indigestion. The indigestion usually disappears after taking an acid reducer or an antacid. This symptom is frequently mistaken for simple heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Other Symptoms

Gastric ulcer patients can suffer from a host of other symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, light-headedness, fatigue, weakness and pale skin. Gastric ulcers occasionally produce scar tissue that obstructs the passage of food through an individuals digestive tract. This can cause the patient to vomit frequently or feel quite full after eating very little. Some individuals report feeling bloated after eating, while others complain of significantly decreased appetite levels. All of these factors can cause unintentional weight loss.

Bleeding Gastric Ulcers

A bleeding gastric ulcer can trigger less common but potentially more serious symptoms. A bleeding ulcer can cause a patient to throw up bright red blood or to vomit digested blood that looks similar to brown coffee grounds. A bleeding ulcer might also cause a patient to pass stools that contain dark red blood or to pass black stools that look like tar. All of these are signs of a severe gastric ulcer. Any individual suffering from these symptoms should schedule an appointment to see a doctor as soon as possible.

A Healthy Back Starts With Your Feet

Contrary to popular belief, many people with foot problems do not have any pain in their feet. Instead, the area of ​​pain is transferred up the body, to the knees, hips, lower back, or even neck. An example of this is one whose feet roll inward, which causes their pelvis to jut forward. This, in turn, causes the upper back to "hump" and the head to move forward, all in an attempt to keep the body balanced. Your feet must be flexible enough to adapt to changes in the terrain, yet rigid enough to provide solid propulsion when walking. Visual signs that the foot and ankle are causing problems include: bowing in of the Achilles tendon, lateral heel wear on shoes, patellar (kneecap) malpositioning, weak psoas (hip flexor) muscle, and anterior pelvic tilt.

Orthotics can help stabilize your feet and ankles, thereby alleviating the associated pains. Orthotics have been shown to help the following conditions: excessive pronation, arch pain, bunions, plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, Morton's neuromas, shin splints, Achilles and patellar tendonitis, patellofemoral syndrome, iliotibial band syndrome, hip bursitis, hamstring strains and spasms, stress fractures, ankle sprains, chondromalacia patella, knee collateral ligament injury, vertebral subluxations, lower back pain, leg length inequality, sciatica, spinal instability, lumbosacral strain, lumbosacral facet joint jamming, L4 / L5 / S1 disc degeneration, temporomandibular joint (TMJ ) dysfunction, cervical muscle spasm, and pelvic rotation.

Besides orthotics, wearing properly fitted shoes is very important for foot health. This is especially important for women, as they are four times more likely to have foot problems due to the type of shoes they wear. Shoes have been shown to be the principle cause of forefoot disorders in women, and 88% of women wear shoes that are too small for their feet. Proper footwear for the proper activity reduces fatigue because the bone alignment is correct.

When buying shoes, pay attention to the width and arches of the shoe as well as the length. Each type of shoe has a particular arch to support the movements the foot needs for that activity. Alternate shoes daily and with each activity. All fitting should be done weight bearing. You should have your feet measured by a qualified professional occasionally, as our foot size tends to change with age. When standing in a shoe, there should be three-eighths to one-half inch space from the longest toe (which is not necessarily the big toe) to the front of the shoe. The toe box must be wide, high, and long enough to allow for toe movement. If it is too narrow, the toes will be crowded and calluses will form. If it is too short, the shoe will cause nail problems and jammed toes. Any shoe that does not have laces is too tight; as it needs to be so to prevent the shoe from falling off, so avoid these if at all possible. If, after some time of wear, your shoes show a "pushed over" vamp (the lace area), it is probable that you have biomechanical foot problems.

If you have back pain and answer "yes" to any of the following questions, your pain may be related to problems in your feet:

1. Do you stand or walk on hard surfaces more than four hours per day?

2. Do you regularly participate in a physical sport?

3. Are you forty years of age or older?

4. Have you had a previous knee, back or neck injury?

5. Do your shoes wear unevenly?

6. Do you have joint pain while standing, walking, or running?

7. Is one of your legs shorter than the other?

8. Do you have "knock knees" or "bow legs"?

9. Do you have any obvious foot problems, such as bunions, corns, or flat feet?

10. Do your feet toe out when you are walking?

Whether a foot tends to pronate or supinate, these chronic, repetitive forces are transmitted along the kinetic chain to the knees, hips, back, and neck. To stabilize the feet, well-fitted shoes and custom-made orthotics are necessary. By providing proper support for each phase gait, these will ensure balanced function throughout the musculoskeletal system.

In addition to the standard pharmacologic therapies for the periodic paralyses, beta-blockers have been used successfully in some patients. Patients must avoid hypokalemia and drugs that cause prolongation of the QT interval.

The Different Types of Supplements

Supplements are normally tablets, capsules, potions and powders that are designed to correct for a deficiency or to enhance health. They are classified by the companies that sell them in different ways, some of which are quite arbitrary. Below, I've classified supplements so that you can see how they originate, what function they serve in the body and learn some more useful facts about them. Next week I'll address the question of when and how it is sensible to supplement, as well as looking at which suppliers are most reliable.

Vitamins along with minerals are sometimes referred to as micronutrients. This distinguishes them from macronutrients such as protein, fat and carbohydrate. Note that virtually all supplements, except for some herbs and synthetic vitamins, are likely to be found in commonly consumed foods.

Classes of supplement.


  • These are chemicals produced by plants, fungi, animals and bacteria. They are needed in our diet because we can not produce them ourselves. If we were able to produce enough of them they would no longer be called vitamins, and would join the very long list of organic chemicals that we produce naturally in our bodies. So vitamins can be produced by other forms of life, but not us. For instance, vitamin C is produced by oranges and also by cats. However, cats do not need to consume vitamin C, but we do, and we get it by consuming plants that make it such as the orange.
  • There are two different types of vitamin, those that dissolve easily in water and those the dissolve best in fats. This has important consequences, as to absorb fat soluble vitamins most effectively, it is best to consume them with foods containing fats. Nature does this for us. For instance vitamin A and D are found in fat containing foods like cheese, milk, liver and oils. Vitamin C is found in watery foods such as fruit and vegetables.
  • Because vitamins were discovered by scientists in a certain order the letters used to name them are essentially random, and do not indicate any ordered relationship. The vitamin B group contains chemicals that are quite different. They include B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12 as well as biotin and folic acid. Other vitamins, such as D, contain different chemicals, eg D2, D3, but they are all chemically quite similar. Note that most vitamins have other chemical names. So vitamin B1 is called thiamin and vitamin C, ascorbic acid etc.


  • These are chemical elements that are impossible for us to produce. In fact you can only produce these from scratch in a particle accelerator on the sun. We need them in our diet as they also help our body function normally. Iron for example is needed to enable oxygen to be transported in our blood to the muscle fibres. Sodium and potassium enable our nerves to transmit the nerve signals that allow us to have a sense of touch. Minerals like vitamins can be termed, micronutrients. The following minerals are essential in our diet: Sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, iodine, chromium, selenium and manganese. The ones that are most regularly supplemented are iron, especially for women of child-bearing age.
  • There are minerals that are toxic and that we wish to avoid. These are the heavy metals such as cadmium, aluminium and lead as well as mercury.


  • These are proteins, fats and carbohydrates. The carbohydrate found in grains, sugars and root vegetables are not essential for the human body. It's true they are handy as a source of energy, but we can produce them from fat and protein. This explains how eskimos survive, and how many of our ancestors, living in colder climates would have survived. When it comes to fats there are some components called essential fatty acids that we need to consume in our diet. There are also some components of protein called essential amino acids that we need to consume. Eating meat or fish provides all these things, although not necessarily in optimal amounts.
  • You will find both amino acids and fatty acids are available as supplements. For instance, amino acids are a popular supplement with bodybuilders. They try to maximise the rate at which their muscles create protein by consuming the building blocks of protein, amino acids. Another supplement you'll often come across is omega 3 oils, such as cod liver oil or flaxseed oil. Omega 3 fatty acids are used by our body to produce eicosanoids. These help control our bodies response to injury and illness. They also control aspects of our circulatory system, such as our blood pressure and the ability of our blood to clot. This is why omega 3 fish and their oils are often marketed as being able to improve the health of our heart and circulation.

Animal biochemicals

  • These are chemicals naturally produced in us, or sometimes inside the bodies of other animals. If we needed them to remain in good health and could not produce them, then they'd be called vitamins. As naturally occurring substances, we may have enough of them for our needs or we may be deficient. In some instances as we age some of these substances become a bit thin on the ground. Examples include carnitine, lipoic acid and coenzyme Q10, all of which serve multiple functions throughout the body. You'll find plenty of these sold by supplement companies, and it is worth knowing that you actually do produce them naturally.
  • Digestive enzymes are another type of organic chemical produced in human bodies that can be supplemented. They are designed to work in the digestive tract.
  • In contrast, glandular products are most often taken from pigs or cows. I'm sceptical about glandular products as they are essentially proteins that get digested (broken down) when you eat them. How these broken down proteins can then affect our own glandular functions is unclear. I've not seen any valid science that suggests they have an effect.

Naturally occurring bacteria

  • Our guts normally contain about one thousand trillion bacteria. That is a lot, and more than 10 times the total number of cells in our body. These bacteria start to appear in our guts shortly after birth and many come from the mother's milk. They are generally good for our health, helping to boost our immune defenses and keeping out digestive system healthy. However, sometimes pathogenic bacteria are introduced from outside or develop within us when our defences are weak. When this happens a condition called gut dysbiosis occurs (literally meaning bad bacteria in our gut).
  • Probiotics are supplements that contain gut friendly bacteria. They are used when people have digestive problems, have taken antibiotics or to improve immunity. Probiotics are also found in various foods such as yoghurts. The commercial yoghurts that contain live cultures of bacteria are normally termed, probiotic, Biolive or live yoghurts.
  • Prebiotics are foods that feed the good bacteria encouraging them to proliferate at the expense of bacteria that are harmful. Such foods include Jerusalem artichokes, leeks, onions and bananas. Although they exist, there are not currently many prebiotic supplements. As such, knowing what foods to eat to encourage your good bacteria is rather useful.


  • These are organic chemicals found in plants and algae, that are often beneficial for our wellbeing. There are many different types of phytonutrient. The best known are the flavonoids and carotenoids.
  • Flavonoids come in many different types such as the anthocyanins found in berries, flavanols found in tea and cocoa, isoflavones found in soya and tofu, flavonols found in onions and apples and flavanones found in citrus fruit. They are not well absorbed in most people, with absorption rates typically of about 5%. Despite this they are able to change the way our body's cells communicate with each other. They induce changes that can be beneficial for blood pressure and reduce the risk of certain cancers. They also are associated with a reduced risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. For younger people, flavonoids have been associated with improved brain function.
  • The presence of good bacteria in the gut allows more flavonoids to be absorbed.
  • Carotenoids are pigments that typically give plants yellow, orange and red colours. However, although they are red, yellow and orange pigments they can be hidden by other colours in vegetables, and so some are also contained in green vegetables. Examples include the lycopene in tomatoes, beta carotene in carrots and lutein in spinach. The health benefits of carotenoids include reduced likelihood of eye degeneration, including cataracts and reduced likelihood of some cancers. All carotenoids are fat soluble, meaning that they can be stored in the body for extended periods of time. Being fat soluble they are best consumed with fats, to ensure their absorption from the intestines. So tomatoes fried lightly in olive oil will provide more carotenoids than cold tomatoes. Carotenoid supplements are generally better absorbed than carotenoids in food as they are specially mixed in with oils. Note that cholesterol reducing drugs such as cholestyramine (Questran) and colestipol (Colestid), can reduce absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and carotenoids.


  • Herbs are plants that we use for medicinal purposes. They can have beneficial effects on our health, but they are not required for us to function properly. Well known examples include Echinacea, Ginkgo Biloba and Silymarin. Because whole plants are involved the quality of herbal remedies can vary enormously with different parts of the plant being used and different strains of a plant being used. Varying the parts of the plant or the strain used normally makes a big difference to the quality of the herb.
  • Herbs that are used orally are administered in a variety of forms. These include tinctures (soaked in alcohol), infusions (soaked in boiling water) and decoctions (simmered for 30 minutes). As with all supplements it is important to get the dosage correct. Being aware of the size of a teaspoon, dessertspoon, tablespoon and standard cup are all vital to the correct administration of herbal remedies.
  • While herbs are safer than most medicines it is wise to exercise caution when using them. Several herbs interact with common medicines in a way that makes them potentially dangerous. For instance, St John's Wort (anti-depression) should not be used with antibiotics, other anti-depressants or immune suppressants. Ginkgo Biloba and angelica should not be used with anti-coagulant medications such as warfarin and heparin.
  • It is also possible that herbs will induce allergic reaction in some people. If you have suffered allergic reactions before it would be wise to consult a qualified herbalist before taking any.
  • Please note that most nutritional therapists, dieticians or nutritionists are not qualified to administer herbal remedies. There is a lot of knowledge involved in the safe selection of herbs, and unless the herbal remedy you are taking has a good safety record it is always best to consult somebody who has some specialist knowledge about them.


So are supplements worth taking? That would depend on which of the views below you hold?

  • Sceptical – Some people think that all their nutrition should come from their diet. This is an attitude that is often encountered in the medical profession and some Government sponsored nutritional bodies. Sceptics would only supplement if they knew they were clinically deficient in a particular vitamin or mineral.
  • Cautious user – Others will supplement if there is an established need. If there is good evidence from scientific studies or personal experience that suggests a health benefit, then supplements would be used. I would put myself in this category.
  • Enthusiast – You will also find many people, including many of my colleagues in the nutrition and alternative health industries, that will have a try it and see approach. They often use multi vitamins as a sort of health insurance policy and may end up taking a wide range of supplements as they all offer the potential for major health benefits.

My experience is that people seem to mostly sceptical or enthusiastic. A cautious and studied approach is less common. This is entirely understandable, as the research required to be sure you: 1) are not being duped by product marketing for a supplement or 2) are deficient in an important nutrient, is potentially vast.

There are several things to bear in mind when choosing which of the above camps you should sit in.

  1. The price of supplements can add up quickly, so if you are not wealthy it is prudent to be sure you are getting some benefit.
  2. Some supplements can interact with medications or even foods. Are you sure what you are doing is safe for you?
  3. What is good for one person is not very likely to be good for you. We are all different, and our needs for supplements varies enormously.
  4. If you are completely sceptical, I would remind you that there are a huge number of good quality scientific studies supporting the use of most types of supplement in certain circumstances.
  5. Supplement and sports product companies are out to make money and their marketing can be misleading. Many scientific studies are subject to bias, and especially if they are industry funded.
