Fish Recipes With a Dose of Poison

Health Magazines have become a premiere go-to for those who are health conscious and trying to make better choices. The problem: being a health magazine does not mean the information they publish is healthy. Very often their information is outrageous …

Case in point: a nationally distributed magazine with various fish dishes in their food section for a particular issue. They provide several recipes and then they take the time to insert a special little box to address the issue of highly toxic, dangerous harmful metals like pcb's and mercury that are found in fish. They suggest not eating it every day, limiting intake to a certain amount or frequency, and to avoid completely if you're pregnant or trying to get pregnant (that last one should be a good clue of toxicity).

TRANSLATION: It's toxic stuff, but if you eat it only 3 times a week you will not die immediately.

You know your body can handle arsenic in small amounts too; it does not make it a good idea to put it on the menu.

The next thing this bad advice article says is to buy from "sustainable" salmon farms.

That sounds nice but "sustainable" salmon farms are not sustainable at all. Forget the medication and the genetic bio-engineering franken-salmon, but just the dye they use to get the salmon to be pink is toxic. Real salmon is beige; have you ever seen beige salmon in a store?

Several years ago, after enough people got seriously sick and their illness was tied to a chemical dye used for salmon, Canada finally banned it. The next day the manufacturers turned to a different chemical (well, named different, slight modification of ingredients makes that legal) … so now we wait another 10 years for a few more thousand people to get sick, and the chemi-go- round just keeps turning. One thing for sure, ban all you want, there will always be a lineup of replacement poisons waiting, usually by the very same suppliers.

If this dangerous advice was posted by some lonely blogger from his armchair it would not be as deadly; but when it is printed in a premiere "health mag" that is nationally distributed and they describe themselves as "Canada's Natural Health and Wellness Magazine", the average person will just assume that the information is credible. That is a very dangerous assumption.

And with toxins like this, you would never immediately know what's happening … but somewhere down the road when your immune system gives out because it is exhausted from battling toxins, "suddenly" you have liver failure or malfunctioning thyroid or pancreatic problems or auto -immune disorders or, or, or, or … there's no end to that list. Virtually any part of you can break down and because of our various genetic codes, it will be different for everyone. Of course since it take years to get there, it's almost impossible to connect it back to the cause.

A weakened immune system makes you susceptible to anything and everything. Poisons in food might be small enough doses to be legal, but they add up and eventually your body will break. You are not made of steel, so do not eat like you are (even steel erodes and rusts).

COMMON SENSE: avoid arsenic, avoid mercury, avoid any toxin you can avoid in all amounts and give your poor body a hand – it's already busy battling the air you breathe and water you drink every day.

Dealing With Stomach Ulcers

When you have been diagnosed with stomach ulcers, it means that you have developed small breaks in the tissue that lines the stomach. These breaks and holes can cause a reasonable amount of pain, primarily because there is nearly continuous leaking of stomach acid through it. These "little" holes can be anywhere from 1/8 "to" "and are most often found along the intestines. Left untreated, they can become bigger and your condition will worsen.

Symptoms Associated with Stomach Ulcers

Stomach pain is the primary symptom of ulcers of the stomach and it can be so extreme that it wakes you up in the middle of the night. The pain is generally located in the upper abdomen or just below the breastbone. It usually occurs within a few hours of eating, and the only way to quiet it down is to eat something, anything. This just may be the reason that most sufferers report gaining too much weight, even though it causes them abdominal pain.

Other symptoms associated with this condition can include, oddly enough, loss of appetite in some, followed by weight loss. Nausea, vomiting, bloody vomit, bloody stool, and swelling of the abdomen. Lastly, ulcer sufferers also report feeling a burning sensation in the stomach that may last anywhere from 30 minutes, to 3 hours.

What Causes Stomach Ulcers

There are any number of causes that can be linked to this condition. Stress, smoking and too much alcohol are some of the very common causes. If there is a history of ulcers in the family, you may be more likely to develop them. Some may develop them as a reaction to certain medications, while still others may develop them as a by-product of some serious and chronic medical conditions, such as emphysema and rheumatoid arthritis. Again, those occurrences may actually be linked to the medication being taken for those conditions.

Improper diets, like those that are high in sugar, acids and things that retard normal digestion are also a factor. Developing ulcers is one of the first signs that the fad diet you may be on is causing your body to react inappropriately to whatever food your diet is comprized of or the lack of necessary nutrients that have been eliminated from it.

Diagnosing the Ulcers

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms outlined, it is imperative that you will be examined by your doctor as soon as you can. Ulcers are nothing to fool with, and if you delay too long, it can develop into a condition known as a bleeding ulcer, or hemorrhaging ulcer. When it gets to that point, it can only be treated through surgery. To determine exactly what type of ulcer you may have, stomach or duodenal, your doctor will have to administrator some tests to pinpoint the location of the ulcers.

The most common test is an upper GI series. This consists of a barium drink, taken just before a series of X-rays are shot. The barium will be distributed throughout your upper substantive tract, and will be visible on the X-rays. Any perforations will be outlined by the barium, and your doctor will then know which treatment plan will work for you.

Treatments and Cautionary Tips

The point of treatment is to first reduce the amount of acid in your stomach, as well as strengthening the protective linings that come into contact with that acid on a regular basis. Never self-medicate with over-the-counter medications, because they may actually make it worse. The medications your doctor will give you may be similar, but they will be at a dose he knows that your body can handle, without causing more damage. Surgery is only an option of the last resort.

Even after your stomach acid has been reduced to a better level, you still need to be cautious about what you put in your body from that point on. Stomach ulcers can reoccur, if acid levels rise due to irritants introduced back into the body. Aspirin, ibuprofen and even iron supplements can irritate the walls once more and even prevent the ulcers from ever healing; so can stress, so it might be wise to take up meditation to teach you to deal with it better.

When Your Heart Hurts

Every day, your heart tirelessly pumps hundreds of liters of blood to supply your body’s needs. It does not even stop for a single minute to rest. Over time, however, your heart grows tired and begins to manifest symptoms of ‘wear and tear’. It may first exhibit its gradual deterioration in occasional chest pains that may often feel like your heart is breaking. What characterizes a chest pain and when should this alarm you?

Chest Pains-an Overview

Chest pains can occur in varying degrees. Some of these can be nothing more than a dull ache that radiates to your neck and arms. The other can be as painful as a sharp stab, causing burning and crushing pain to spread to your jaw, neck, and back or arms. In all cases, sufferers experience recurring pressure and painful tightness in the chest that could last for several minutes.

Pain in your chest is a symptom of an underlying problem – either with your heart or other body organs. A common case of it is heartburn, which makes the sufferer feel a painful and burning sensation behind the breastbone, indicating problems with either the heart or the stomach. When this symptom is a prelude to a heart attack, it occurs along with nausea, dizziness, cold sweat, and shortness of breath. When it occurs due to a non-heart problem, the sufferer experiences a kind of pain that may seem to get better with a change in body position but intensifies with coughing and deep breaths.

No matter what the underlying cause for this chronic inflammation is, it requires medical attention. See your doctor immediately if you think you are experiencing a heart attack. Those with heart conditions may find it beneficial to take natural heart supplements such as forskolin that helps ease the blood flow, regulate blood pressure, and prevent heart attacks.

The paragraphs below will outline some heart-related, digestive, and muscular causes of chest pain.

Heart-Related Causes

There are several heart-related causes to some forms of chest pain.

1. Heart attack – A heart attack occurs when your blood clots and obstructs the flow of your blood to your heart muscle.

2. Angina – Angina occurs due to plaque buildup on the inner walls of your arteries that constrict blood flow.

3. Aortic dissection – This fatal medical condition occurs when the inner layers of your aorta separates, forcing blood to flow between the layers and causing it to rupture.

4. Pericarditis – This medical condition occurs when the sac that surrounds your heart, the pericardium, swell and causes sharp stabs of pain that get worse when you lay down or inhale.

Digestive Causes

Some chest pains occur due to problems in your digestive organs.

1. Heartburn – Like the previous paragraphs mention, heartburn causes a painful and burning sensation behind the breastbone; this occurs when acid from your stomach washes up into your esophagus.

2. Swallowing Disorders – Your chest pain could be a result of some abnormalities in your esophagus, making it difficult and painful for you to swallow.

3. Pancreas and Gallbladder Problems – Individuals who have problems in their gallbladders and pancreas experience abdominal pain that can radiate to their chests.

Bone and Muscle Causes

1. Costochondritis – This type of chest pain occurs when the cartilage joining your breastbone to your ribs swell, causing you pain.

2. Sore muscles – Fibromyalgia, a type of chronic pain syndrome, can cause frequent muscle-related chest pain.

3. Injured ribs – Chest pain can also be due to a broken or injured rib.

The Facts About Lymphedema

What is lymphedema? It is the accumulation of lymphatic fluid in an extremity, the groin, face, neck or the chest. There are many reasons for this to occur. There is Primary lymphedema which is a condition that you can be born with (congenital), or can occur later in life (acquired). Primary cases occur most often in the lower extremities and, though less likely, can also involve the trunk or genitals. It can be congenital or, in most qualified cases that occurs during puberty or adulthood, have no known cause. Secondary lymphoma is usually seen after some sort of trauma to the lymphatic system, such as surgery or radiation. There are a number of cancers that can cause these consequences. Many women suffer from post-mastectomy lymph node disruption that can sometimes take years to present.

Whatever the underlying issue may be that caused the you to have a disruption in your normal lymphatic flow, the problem remains that the normal, functioning lymphatic pathways have been disrupted. This leads to accumulation of lymph fluid in the affected areas, which can lead to a large array of problems. For example, if you have a condition that leads to lymphedema of the leg, once the extremity fills with the fluid it becomes trapped with no way to be removed. The complications can be mass and severe. Many patients have recurrent infections, cellulitis and venous stasis ulcers that are unable to heal, due to the lack of accessibility of oxygen rich blood that becomes blocked by the large amount of lymph that consumes the limb. Unfortunately once someone is burdened by this ongoing disease, it can lead to lack of mobility, which causes obesity, and this can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and depression.

Conventional therapies include compression stockings, elevation, and exercise. Many patients are not compliant with these methods for one reason or another. To benefit from the use of compression stockings you must put them on before you get out of bed. This results the lymph from flowing into the affected extremity. Otherwise you are just going to trap the fluid that has already made its way into the area. This is a very tedious process for many people who do not fully understand the benefits, so it does not get done. Exercise becomes difficult and, again the patient is not properly educated to the fact that the lymphatic system works differently than the cardiac system, and relations on muscle movement to channel the system properly, and it too becomes part of the non-compliance. This leaves elevation, and this alone is not effective.

There are many studies at this time that have been produced by Duke and Stanford, that show a dramatic improvement with the use of sequential, gradient compression pumps. These pumps are mechanical devices that attach to a "sleeve" that can fit any part of the body (except the neck and face), and inflate with air in an upwards motion, preventing back-flow, to lymphatic channels that are working properly and can redistribute the lymph back into the bloodstream. For patients who have failed with conventional therapies these devices are proven to show dramatic results.

It is important to stay educated on the disease, and find the therapy that works best for you. This disease will not just "go away" in most cases, and needs to be addresses for the very serious illness it is. Take good care of your skin and work with your physician to find, and be compliant with, a therapy that works for you.

Psychosomatic Disease – The Mind & Body Connection

As an internist, I'm fascinated by the cause of disease. Just as every crime mystery has a perpetrator, every disease has a cause. The closer you get to identifying the cause of disease, the more effective the treatment.

One axiom I follow is that the further the target of our treatment is from the actual cause of the disease, the more difficult and stronger the treatment must be in order to be effective. And the corollary is that the closer the treatment is to the cause, the easier it can be to create an effective treatment.

This may explain why things like herbs and homeopathy can be so effective for the body, whereas a combination of the strongest medications may be only partially or temporarily effective on symptoms, or even completely ineffective and coupled with related side effects.

For example, we know that a heart attack is caused by the abrupt blockage of blood flow to an area of the heart. The blockage may have been caused by a blood clot, arterial spasm or the progressive layering of cholesterol plaque. And what causes that may be inflammation of the blood vessel lining or cell membrane hyper-excitability.

Behind that may be oxidative stress, cell membrane dysfunction and / or nutritional and metabolic deficiencies. And causing that may be poor diet, low-grade infections, stress, etc.

Behind all of these physical changes there may be other energy changes that affect the function of the cells. Perhaps those could have emotions that interfere with the cell membranes function, as I suggested in my article "Stress: an Eastern Medicine Point of View" which described the effects of emotions on the neurotransmitter receptors of the cell membrane.

Mindbody Connection Confirmed

If grief may be an energy that affects lung function, what emotions might affect the cells in heart disease? In two recent articles, the Journal of American College of Cardiology (March 17, 2009) reported that patients with anger, hostility and depression have a much greater chance of developing heart disease.

Physical diseases that have their cause in the mind and emotions of a patient typically are referred to as "psychosomatic". While this term implies that these diseases are imaginary and fictitious, they can be very real, painful, debilitating and sometimes fatal. Due to the negative connotations of the word psychosomatic, "mindbody" has been suggested to describe these diseases.

Author and Physician John Sarno's book, "The Mind Prescription: Healing the Body, Healing the Pain," includes an impressive list of mindbody ailments, including well-known ones such as tension headaches, migraines, ulcers, back, neck and shoulder pains, sciatica, tension myositis syndrome and repetitive stress injuries. Also included are other disorders such as skin diseases, immune dysfunction, tinnitus, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, digestive dysfunction, atrial arrhythmias, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, mitral valve prolapse and even cancer.

The Mind Suppresses Negativity

Based on current research, many of the disorders associated with heart disease may actually be considered to be "mindbody" diseases. So what is the purpose and reason for mindbody sicknesses? The mind is designed to be a stable vehicle of thought and self-awareness. To perform its duties it may have to exclude painful memories from its awareness that could possibly disturb its function or overwhelm it.

The mind has one major defense mechanism for filtering negative, and possibly destructive, thoughts, and that is to suppress unpleasant, unwanted, unprepared-for thoughts from our consciousness and put them in our sub- or unconscious.

The Closer the Treatment is to the Cause, the Easier It Can Be to Create an Effective Treatment.

Now it would be fine and dandy if these repressed or suppressed thoughts stayed buried in some deep, dark area of the memory, never to be heard from again. But actually, they have a way of entering our consciousness indirectly. The well-known psychologist CG Jung said, "The unconscious is always projected."

Dealing with Emotions on the Physical Level

We project unconconscious thoughts and emotions both externally and internally; what we fail to see about ourselves is projected onto others. If you are not aware of your own anger, hostility, depression, fear or anxiety, then it becomes projected onto other people and you see them as angry, hostile, depressed, fearful or anxious.

Another way these unconscious thoughts and moods show up is through internal projection affecting our physical health. In other words, we project our unconscious emotions into our bodies. Rather that being stored away or hidden, these repressed thoughts and emotions show up in our bodies as ailments. So instead of dealing with emotions on a psychic level, we end up dealing with them on a physical level.

To give you a recent example, I had the pleasure of helping a young man who had severe cardiovascular disease. He not only had hypertensive and coronary artery disease, but also had tears in his major vessels (aneurysms) that required the surgical removal of part of his heart and aorta to save his life. He was on several medications and nutritional supplements.

It was not until the end of our hour-long visit that he admitted he had been abused as a child and had a difficult time dealing with the ramifications of it, including despair, guilt and anger. I realized then that he was dealing with his pain on a physical rather than an emotional level. He was suppressing something that was "teasing his heart out," both literally and figuratively.

Healing Starts with Self-Awareness

Many of my patients ask me what they can do to help their mind to better deal with these stored emotional traumas. Ultimately, I believe that overall healing comes from self-awareness. Until that occurs, I often suggest they focus on supporting their body with a healthy diet, moderate and consistent exercise, and natural dietary herbal supplements, as well as dozens of drug-free therapies that can help them deal with repressed emotions.

The self-discovery of the disease (or "dis-ease") in all of us often entails a painful raising of awareness of the cause. Changing the way we think or feel is one the most challenging tasks we face. Those who avoid this painful journey, whether it be changing emotions, thoughts, lifestyle choices, dietary problems, addictions, etc., may be compelled to treat physical symptoms that never seem to completely go away.

"Ultimately, I believe that overall healing comes from self-awareness."

Success in health often means the ultimate struggle of discovering the cause. The reward could very well be a life of disease-free health.

Are Platelet Inhibiting Prescription Drugs Used for Heart Attack Prevention Helpful?

Since aspirin can be picked up in any drug store for mere pennies a pill, the drug companies looked for something that did the same thing but that required a prescription, and that they could have asked better than aspirin or that added to aspirin. Clopidogrel (Plavix) is a pill that is promoted as completing the effects of aspirin on inhibitory of the cyclooxygenase pathway, which is said to work with aspirin by blocking platelets and there is inhibiting blood clotting, thus preventing heart attacks. The Clopidogrel versus Aspirin in Patients at Risk of Ischaemic Events (CAPRIE) Trial randomly assigned 19185 patients with a history of recent stroke or heart attack to receive clopidogrel or aspirin for 2 years. Patients on clopidogrel had a 5.32% annual rate of a composite measure of stroke, heart attack, or vascular death, compared with 5.83% on aspirin, a difference that was barely statistically significant (CAPRIE 1996).

The CHARISMA trial involved 15,603 patients with heart disease or risk factors for heart disease who were given clopidogrel plus aspirin or aspirin alone. There was no difference between the groups in combined incidence of heart attack, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes (Bhatt et al. 2006). In the CLOpidogrel and Metoprolol Infarction Trial (COMMIT) 45852 patients with a heart attack within the past 24 hours were given clopidogrel or placebo in addition to aspirin. Clopidogrel patients had a 9% reduction in a combined measure of death, heart attack or stroke, a difference that was statistically significant (COMMIT 2006) An analysis of all the published studies showed a 10% reduction in heart attacks and strokes in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease when clopidogrel was added to aspirin (ATC 2002). These differences, however, translate into less than 1% reduction in absolute risk.

In the Management of Atherothrombosis with Clopidogrel in High-risk Patients (MATCH) (Diener et al. 2004) study 7599 patients with recent stroke or TIA with one other risk factor for heart disease were randomly assigned to receive clopidogrel or clopidogrel plus aspirin. There was no difference in rates of combined stroke, heart attack, or hospitalization between clopidogrel (17%) and clopidogrel plus aspirin (16%); a 1.3% increase in bleeding was not statistically significant. In a study of 320 patients who had developed a bleeding ulcer while taking aspirin to prevent heart disease, after the patients' ulcers healed they were randomized for a year to re-treatment with aspirin or clopidogrel. All of them also received esomeprazole. The patients who took clopidogrel had more gastrointestinal bleeding (8.6%) than aspirin patients (0.7%), a difference that is striking (Chan et al. 2005).

Based on these conflicting results and the overall small benefit admitted in addition to the higher cost of clopidogrel I recommend using aspirin over clopidogrel if you have a history of heart attack or stroke. I would not consider it mandatory (or useful) to take either if you do not have a history of heart disease.

Diabetes Support Groups to Prevent Heart Attack

Diabetes support groups are available to help the diabetics through learning and planning their new lifestyle. This is now more essential than in learning how to prevent heart attack, a long term complication of this condition. Take heart for it can be prevented.

Heart and blood vessel disease are the main cause of death among diabetics because this condition can damage the major arteries and the small blood vessels. As a result, it is easier for the fatty deposits to develop in the treaties. This is known as atherosclerosis.

This leads to the narrowing of the arteries which in turn can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. With the narrowing of the arteries comes less blood rich in oxygen, flowing to the heart. The coronary artery disease follows. This can go on slowly but certainly with the person concerned not keeping it at all but with the help of the diabetes support groups, this event can be prevented.

Here are the signs and symptoms to know if one is experiencing a heart attack. To prevent this from happening, call diabetes support groups for help:

  • Prolonged and increasing occurrence of chest pain
  • Squeezing pain or pressure on the chest center for longer than a few minutes
  • Prolonged pain in the area of the upper abdomen or upset stomach
  • Pain or discomfort going further than the chest to shoulder, back, arm, even to the area of the neck, jaw and teeth
  • Sweating
  • Feeling false and false
  • Vomiting and nausea or unsettled stomach
  • Shortness of breath
  • Lightheadedness

What is the treatment for coronary artery disease?

The doctor will recommend some kind of drug therapy in order to make the blood flow to the muscle of the heart better. This will alleviate the symptoms and help prevent coronary artery disease. One does not want to let this go without treatment. The diabetes support groups will help clarify each one.

  • Aspirin – Blood clotting can be reduced with a daily low-dose. Sometimes though, this is not safe for everyone. The doctor will be able to tell if it is safe for the particular situation of a patient.
  • Drugs that lower cholesterol – This plays an important role to prevent and treat coronary artery disease because cholesterol is a big part of the deposits that lead to the narrowing of the arteries.
  • Drugs that lower blood pressure – This will reduce the work load on the heart which will greatly improve the flow of blood in the arteries.
  • Other drugs – Cardiac catheterization may be recommended by the doctor. This treatment involves the injection of a dye into the heart's blood vessels. The X-ray will see the dye which will show how many blockages are there. This will tell the doctor if there is a need for angioplasty to open the treaties. Surgery may even be recommended to clear the clogged arteries.

Can cardiovascular disease be prevented? There are steps one can take to help the blood vessels free form the fatty deposits. They can be kept wide open so the blood can flow freely to the heart and to the other major organs. These steps can certainly help stop or at the very least reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. So will the diabetes support groups confirm.

  • Eat meals that are heart-healthy.
  • Be physically active.
  • Keep the blood pressure within normal limits.
  • Control blood sugar level.
  • Quit smoking.

Follow these simple rules and one may just prevent a heart attack. Remember that there are diabetics out there who have invented this complication because they have been compliant with the things to do. With determination and diabetes support groups, anyone can do it.

HDL or LDL? What's The Difference Between HDL and LDL?

In various media forms today, we often hear a lot about cholesterol. The terms HDL and LDL are commonly used, but embarrassingly, most people really do not know the difference. Cholesterol is one of the natural substances found in the body that has certain vital functions to perform like:

  • The Building of cell membranes
  • Maintenance of fluidity of these cell membranes
  • Metabolizing the fat soluble vitamins of type A, D, E and K
  • Production of bile for proper digestion of fat
  • Base material for many hormones
  • Basic component of the nervous system

The cholesterol that is found in your body is either the LDL type or the HDL type. In the medical community, LDL cholesterol is considered "bad" cholesterol while HDL is considered as the "good" form of cholesterol. Surprisingly, there are really no two separate forms of cholesterol. The cholesterol itself is the same for both types. The cholesterol type is determined by the way and direction in which it travels in the blood stream.

So What's The Difference?

Cholesterol is a blood soluble component and is packed inside a chemical product called lipo-proteins. This packed cholesterol is taken to various places inside your body through the blood stream. The LDL, or "bad," cholesterol is taken by the Low Density Lipo-protein (LDL). This low density lipo-protein usually takes the cholesterol to the tissues of the body. These tissues include the arms of the heart. This often leads to the build up of plaque inside your arteries and minor capillaries hampering the ability of blood flow. This poses a greater risk of heart related diseases. Therefore, LDL is described as the "bad" form of cholesterol.

On the other hand, cholesterol can also travel by the High Density Lipo-protein (HDL). This takes the cholesterol deposited in tissues of the body, including the arteries, to the liver where it is broken down and deposited from your body properly. Thus, the HDL cholesterol is considered the "good" form of cholesterol because it reduces the chance of plaque buildup in your arteries thusby reducing the chance of heart failure and other coronary heart diseases.

So, for a healthy heart, it is always necessary that the level of the "bad" cholesterol be below 100mg / dl and "good" cholesterol be higher than 40 mg / dl. Another way to check the healthy level of cholesterol in your body is to maintain the ratio of LDL: HDL at 3: 1. When you do this, you can take care of your heart. Free from life threatening heart conditions.

Children's Common Respiratory Diseases

While the most common respiratory diseases in children and adults are colds and flu, there are other lung diseases that children are also vulnerable to.

One of these is bronchitis. The bronchial tubes transport the air we inhale to the air sacs in our lungs. Here oxygen is absorbed into the bloodstreams. If these tubes become infected, we have bronchitis. Bronchitis often follows a cold and is identified by a dry, hacking cough. The cough usually lasts from four to six weeks. Bronchitis is generally treated with over the counter cough medicines to control the cough and is not contagious.

When the air sacs in the lungs become infected, the result is pneumonia or pneumonitis. The illness is the same but pneumonitis refers to a small area of infection with mild symptoms whereas pneumonia involves a large area of infection with more severe symptoms. There are many types of pneumonias.

One is caused by a virus and is so mild that the person has only a mild cough and low fever. This is called walking pneumonia.

Symptoms of pneumonia are similar to cold and flu symptoms. There is a cough accommodated by a high fever. The child generally does not feel well, is tired and has no appetite. Pneumonia is not contagious and is usually treated with antibiotics.

A respiratory infection that invokes fear when it is discovered in a child is tuberculosis. However, these fears are unfounded. There are two types of tuberculosis: primary and secondary. Primary tuberculosis occurs in children while adults contract secondary tuberculosis.

Childhood tuberculosis is not at all contagious. In fact, the child's body may be infected with the tuberculosis germ but may heal by itself due to the action of the immune system. No one including the child will be aware of the problem. However, if this happens the child will become allergic to the tuberculle bacillus and test positive on a skin test. Therefore, it is very important, if a child does test positive, to follow with a chest x ray.

In the event primary tuberculosis does require treatment, today's medications are so effective that a child can usually return to school within two to five days without endangering others.

Tuberculosis has been on the decline in the United States for the past forty to fifty years. It is now found mostly in those regions that are near Mexico.

Sometimes an infection of the thin outer skin of the lungs, known as pleurisy, follows as a complication of pneumonia or tuberculosis. However, pleurisy can also be caused by a virus.

Symptoms of pleurisy are severe chest pain, high fever and sometimes an outpouring of fluid between the lung and the chest wall. This outpouring is called pleural effusion. Intensive treatment is necessary wherever effusion takes place.

However, the pleurisy that is caused by a virus is hardly ever accepted by effusion. But it can result in a severe, constricting chest pain. Because of the chest pain involved, this type of pleurisy is often referred to as the grippe or the devil's grippe.

While very painful, it runs it course in seven to fourteen days. Antibiotic treatment is not necessary.

Grow From Your Strengths

My recent AHA is that growth comes from focusing relentlessly on the positive. That's a big change for me. I've spent a lot of time reflecting on my past, to try to understand it and learn whatever lesson is there for me. Now I'm realizing how limited the usefulness of that approach is.

For the past few months, I've been focusing on how great my present is, and on the wonderful possibilities that the future contains. As a result, I always have a smile on my face and I feel like I've dropped about 10 pounds of stress.

The other equally important benefit is that great things are happening in my business. I'm connecting more easily with people and new and better opportunities are landing in my lap.

That's no coincidence.

Here's an exercise to help you get a new perspective on wherever you are.

If you're treading water, this will help you switch your focus and energy. Follow these steps, and you'll find yourself taking action more easily and you'll have a smile on your face. It will feel easy and graceful.

If you're in the midst of change- you're working harder than ever, or you're trying a new strategy, you may feel great about your goal (where you're going) AND be uncomfortable where you are (in the middle of your journey to arrive at that goal). Follow these steps and you'll gain comfort. Your soul will feel lighter. The wrinkles on your forehead will smooth out. You'll start having fun again! Yay!

1. Make a list of your strengths, your brilliance, what's unique about you.Aim for at least 20 items on that list. Having problems getting to 20? Ask three friends or collections: What are 5 characteristics (physical, intellectual, spiritual, or emotional) that stand out about me? Make sure you get that list up to 20. And feel free to keep adding to it 🙂

From my list, three of my strengths are: I'm supportive, I have a strong sense of style, and I have a lot of entrepreneurial expertise.

2. What are your top 10 core values? Take a minute to reflect on this and start writing.

Three of my core values are helping others, independence, and creativity.

3. Choose the most energizing strength and the most energizing value. Scan the list of strengths and pick the one that most appeals to you, that gives you a little zing when you read it. Circle that. Now do the same with the list of core values: scan the list of values and circle the one that has the most energy for you right now.

4. Combine your strength with your value. How can you combine these two together? This should immediately feel energizing and fun!

As an example using one of my strengths with one of my values, I can ask myself: How can I mix being supportive with my creativity? Just asking myself that question stimulates, well, my creativity about being creative!

Sometimes there are new ways I can be supportive: I could use my sense of humor to support someone in a new way.

Flipping the question around: how can other people support my creativity? I could ask people about how they experience creativity in their lives, which would help my listening skills (that's supportive!) And give me some new ideas too.

Play around with your unique combination; have fun with it!

5.Keep that fun and energy going all week! Write your strength and your value down and post them in places where you can see them everyday: the bathroom mirror, the refrigerator, your computer, in the car, in the bedroom, where you spend time.

For the next week, keep bringing this strength and this value into your awareness, several times throughout the day. In every conversation – particularly those that are difficult for you, whether it's with someone you struggle with, or if it's in an area where you feel certain – take a deep breath and visualize your strength and your value.

While you're talking, and while you're working, keep coming back to your strength and your value. You'll find that your sense of ease increases. New solutions and opportunities will present themselves to you.

Bronchitis Vs Pneumonia

What is the difference between bronchitis and pneumonia?

BRONCHITIS

It is an inflammation of the bronchi, which are the large air way passes that lead from the mouth to the lungs.
If it is caused by a virus, it is self limited and needs no treatment at all.

It is divided into two types sometimes acute and chronic. In acute it lasts for four to ten days accompanied by flu or cold while when chronic, it lasts for three months and above and the symptoms are recurrent and can be a threat to life. It is cached by dirty air and heavy fumes.

PNEUMONIA

It is an infection in the lung tissue itself. The vast majority of patients who have bronchitis have it because they are exposed to virus, most often the common cold.

It is caused by virus as well as bacteria and requires treatment with antibiotics.

It can also be caused by micro organizations.

It is divided into four types:

– Walking one which is mild and causes a dry cough.
– Aspiration one where bacteria is present and it is harmless.
– Opportunistic one it is harmless as long as immune system is healthy.
– Regional and occupational caused by exposure to chemicals.

Incubation period is four to six days in influence it takes 18 to72 hours.
Viral one lasts long to cure.

Bacterial is cured between one to two weeks.

A good balanced diet will make sure that your immune system is at its peak and fighting off infections for your body will be easy. You can also take food supplements when necessary just to fill in the gaps that your diet might have left.

Rib Pain: Symptom Of A Rib Injury, Or Something Else?

Rib pain symptoms can be caused by a number of possible diseases and disorders – not just rib injuries like cracked ribs or broken ribs.

In this article, we'll list some of the most common flaws, conditions, and disorders that cause pain in the ribs symptoms. Even if you see information here that gives you reason to suspect you have one of the conditions described, you should still consult your health care provider to make sure you get an accurate diagnosis.

First, we'll look at possibilities that may be caused by bone, joint and soft tissue problems.

Rib pain due to some kind of injury is probably more common than any other type. Often, they result from a blow or some kind of impact – during sports competition or a vehicular accident. There's little mystery regarding the cause. Such injuries are usually easy to see with imaging technology like MRIs or X-rays.

Pain in the rocks is, of course, the most obvious symptom of a broken rib. But someone with this type of rib injury may also have considerable difficulty breathing.

Some ribcage pain may result from injuries to soft tissue surrounding the ribs, like cartilage, tendons and muscles. These may be harder to diagnose. Sometimes, these soft tissue injuries are sore or tender to the touch, and discomfort drawing a deep breath may occur.

A number of diseases and disorders linked to the bones and joints sometimes cause ribcage pain as a symptom. These include osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Several lesser known medical conditions are also characterized by pain in the rib and chest area.

A condition known as osteochondritis dissecans causes pain in areas where your ribs are attached to your backbone and breastbone. It's occurs when there's an insufficient blood flow to these areas. This condition is more likely to occur in older children and teenagers, particularly if they play sports.

Costochondritis is a disorder that results in pain that is somewhat similar to osteochondritis dissecans. Costochondritis causes pain in the cartilage that connotes the breastbone to the ribs. It is the result of inflammation. Typically, rib pain from costochondritis occurs after a blow or some kind of trauma. It can also be the result of repetitive use, or from trying to lift, push or pull something that's too heavy.

Nerve problems originating in the spinal can also trigger rib pain symptoms. Doctors call this referred pain because the pain is actually originating in another location. It travels along nerve pathways and presents in a completely different place. Very often, a bulging disc or some kind of damage or misalignment in the spinal column causes this type of pain.

Rib pain symptoms can arise as a result of a variety of lung and respiratory disorders.

Pneumonia – An infection of the lungs due to bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi ..

Pleurisy – The thin covering that protects and cushions the lungs is known as the pleura. It can become inflamed, and when it does, you can experience severe pain in the ribs.

Tuberculosis – Tuberculosis (commonly known as TB) is an infectious disease that strikes the lungs. Rib pain is a common symptom.

Angina (chest pain from heart disease) – Generalized pain in the ribcage area can result from heart problems, although angina is often most acute in the central chest.

Workers who have been exposed to asbestos for years sometimes contract asbestosis or mesothelioma. Both these are lung diseases which are characterized by rib pain symptoms.

Certain types of cancer can cause rib pain symptoms, especially myeloma and lymphoma.

Whooping cough – Rib pain occurs when this violent cough strains muscles and other soft tissue around the rib cage.

Rib pain is an early symptom of an illness called shingle, which is an extremely painful condition characterized by a skin rash. It is caused by the herpes zoster virus.

Individuals who have occasional panic attacks are sometimes affected by rib pain. Rapid, deep breathing caused by anxiety can pull and strain muscles around the ribcage, which results in discomfort. Such episodes can also lead to serious heart problems and even heart attacks.
