What Is Bile Reflux

We are all familiar with the condition acid reflux Bile reflux is another condition that is not discussed as much, but is very similar and sometimes can be confused with acid reflux.

First, let me educate you a little bit about what bile is. Bile is a digestive fluid produced in the liver. Some of the components that make up bile are:

* Water

* Cholesterol

* Bile pigments

* Bile salts

Bile is placed in the gallbladder and while eating is discharged into the duodenum where the bile aids the process of digestion of fats.

Bile reflux is the result of bile that travels up from your small intestine into your stomach and esophagus BR is sometimes confused with acid reflux because a person can experience some of the same symptoms and bile (like GERD) irritates the lining of your esophagus, potentially increasing your risk of esophageal cancer.

One thing that makes bile reflux different from acid reflux is that it can not be treated with little lifestyle changes or diet. It has to be treated with prescribed medication or, in severe cases, with surgery.

Another thing that makes BR different is this condition irritates the stomach, which causes a gnawing or burning sensation in your upper abdomen.

Because acid reflux and BR are pretty similar it can sometimes be a bit confusing to identify the symptoms. Here are a few symptoms that will help you to detect BR:

* Nausea

* Vomiting bile

* Hoarseness

* Unintentional weight loss

Some of the causes of this condition are a peptic ulcer and gallbladder removal. A peptic ulcer obstructs the pyloric valve. When this happens the valve does not open enough to allow your stomach to empty as quickly as it should.

As a result, foods and beverages will lead to increased gastric pressure that causes the refluxed bile and stomach acid to back up into your esophagus.

If you had your gallbladder removed then there's a good chance that your body produces more bile than those who have not had their gallbladders removed.

Diagnosing BR is a more difficult procedure than acid reflux, so it requires more exams. Your doctor will also check for damage to your esophagus and for any pre-cancerous changes. Here are some of the exams doctors use to diagnose BR:

* Ambulatory Acid Tests – These exams use an acid-measuring probe to identify when, and for how long, acid regurgitates into your esophagus. Ambulatory acid tests are negative in people with bile reflux.

* Endoscopy – In this test, your doctor places a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera (endoscope) down your throat. The endoscope can show ulcerations or inflammation in your stomach or esophagus and can reveal a peptic ulcer.

* Esophageal impedance – Rather than measuring acid, this test can measure whether gas or liquids reflux into the esophagus. It's helpful for people who have regurgitation of substances that are not acidic and therefore would not be detected by a pH probe.

If not properly treated there can be some serious complications to your health. BR and GERD can cause serious harm to the tissue in your esophagus. The combination of these two conditions can cause other problems like:

* Heartburn

* Esophageal narrowing

* Barrett's esophagus

* Esophageal cancer

* Gastritis

As I said before lifestyle changes can not control BR. One prescribed medication that is more used to treat BR is Ursodeoxycholic acid. This medication helps promote bile flow. UA will also help to reduce the constant symptoms and the severity of pain.

Even though proton pump inhibitors (or PPI's) are used to treat symptoms of acid reflux, the main reason for these type medicines is to reduce acid production, that may also help to reduce BR.

If taking medicine does not help or if there are pre-cancerous changes in your esophagus, then your next option is to try surgery. Diversion is a type of surgery that doctors use to treat BR.

Your doctor will make make a new connection for bile drainage further down in your intestine, thereby diverting bile away from your stomach. This procedure is known as Roux-en-Y (roo-en-wi).

Because some types of operations are often more successful than others, it's always a good idea to discuss the pros and cons very carefully with your doctor.

Get Rid Of Morning Sickness Fast

I wanted to talk to you about how you can get rid of morning sickness. Pregnancy is a hectic time. You’re extremely excited, emotional, uncertain, scared and unprepared all at once. There’s so much that needs to be done and you’re getting sick all the time. Most women have accepted this as an inevitability of getting pregnant, but the fact is that it doesn’t have to be. Women in the Eastern world don’t have morning sickness to the point that we do. I think that should show you that there are ways to avoid this problem without any side effects to your baby. I’m going to show you how to get rid of morning sickness. Vomiting is a very important aspect to our health. It is designed for your body to get something bad out of your body. In this case, there is nothing bad in your body. Since you’re pregnant, you’re pumping a lot new hormones and a lot of them, so you’re just not used to it. There is a reverse side of vomiting too. You won’t vomit if you have something good that can lost. That means if you take your prenatal vitamin a few hours before you typically get sick, your body won’t vomit because it will lose all that good nutrition. There is another unorthodox way to get rid of morning sickness. It involves sleeping with your legs elevated. It seems like a very odd thing to do, but it keeps blood around the torso and keeps it well oxidized. When this area of your body is full of oxygen, vomiting will only destroy that, so it should help to keep you from getting sick.

How Do Probiotics Help Us to Enjoy Improved Health?

The term “probiotic” comes from the Greek word meaning “for life”. Antibiotic therefore means the opposite and although as a drug they can literally save lives by killing of bacteria that is making the body unwell, they can also devastate the good bacteria living happily inside our guts.

Good intestinal health is one of the critical factors determining optimal health. 80% of your immune system lives in your gastrointestinal tract. Approximately one hundred trillion bacteria live inside us, weighing approximately 2 – 3 pounds. Some of these bacteria are referred to as “good” bacteria the others offer no benefit and live undisturbed inside us being kept in check by the large number of good bacteria present.

However, this is the crucial point. If the ratio of good to other bacteria is about 80% to 20% then all is well. Once this starts to deteriorate then the body starts to have problems and ill health is likely to ensue. The immune system will become impaired and it will become increasingly difficult to improve the numbers of good bacteria. This is where probiotic supplements can be invaluable.

In the case of antibiotic treatment, as I said earlier, the good bacteria are killed off with the invading bacteria, it is therefore vital that the body is replenished with good bacteria either in the form of probiotic supplements or probiotic foods such as live unsweetened yoghurt. The main benefit if the probiotic supplement is that the live bacteria are present in their millions. It is a much more concentrated form of live bacteria than the yoghurt and will repopulate the gut far more effectively.

Probiotic supplements come in many shapes and sizes and as with all nutritional supplements it is wise to purchase from a reputable company. Probiotics are only as effective as the method used for making them and storing them. So make sure you know as much as possible about the way they are manufactured before you purchase them.

If you decide to stick with the yoghurt, then make sure again that the yoghurt is live and if possible made with organic milk.

Probiotic supplements can also be useful for anybody suffering from the symptoms of Candida Albicans. This is a condition where the gut has been over populated with this particular fungus and therefore is very lacking in good bacteria. This condition is also known as dysbiosis, which means that the 80 % to 20% I mentioned earlier has not been maintained and the position may even be a complete reversal of 20% good to 80% other/candida albicans. In this scenario the probiotics will help to replenish the good bacteria in the gut

Treatment for Erectile Dysfunction Caused Due To Steroids and Over Masturbation

Some men make mistakes in what concerns their lifestyle without being aware of the serious consequences that those mistakes can have. Some practices can lead to erectile dysfunction and this seems like a high price to be paid for just some moments of pleasure or for lack of information. Few men imagine that over masturbation can generate erectile dysfunctions, but the truth is that this habit, if practiced for years, can ruin your chances of having qualitative sex with a woman. Same thing can also happen to those taking steroids. They can make you incapable of having an erection. Besides ED, steroids and over masturbation can also cause weakness, fatigue, urinal incontinence and premature ejaculation. It is indeed true that this happens in a prolonged period of time, but it is not worth to run the risks, so kill nasty habits right from the beginning and be careful with the use of steroids.

The moment you notice such problems you should start a treatment for erectile dysfunction caused due to steroids and over masturbation. It is not at all recommended to use over the counter drugs for putting an end to your condition. They might come with unpleasant side effects and it is not good to use them without asking for the opinion of a specialist. Prescribed pills, on the other hand, are considered safer because they are suggested by a doctor. They are unlikely to interfere with other medication or to aggravate an existing medical condition. However, they are made of artificial substances and are not entirely free of side effects.

Natural treatments for erectile dysfunction caused due to steroids and over masturbation are not dangerous and have helped many men regain their virility. They are mainly based on herbs and natural substances that act in your body in a manner that enhances your overall vitality and your sexual energy. Studies have shown that L-arginine is an effective substance in dealing with erectile dysfunction. It can be naturally found in certain foods, but supplements are recommended in order to get enough.

In what concerns herbs effective in treating erectile dysfunction caused due to steroids and over masturbation ashwagandha and gingko biloba are renowned. They are both great tonics for the body. Zinc supplements are beneficial also because the amount we take from foods is not enough. However, eating oysters which are rich in zinc is said to do wonders for sexual performance and libido.

Colon Cancer Screening and Medical Malpractice

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of deaths resulting from cancer. Every year, approximately 48,000 people will die in the U.S. from colon cancer. Many of these deaths would be prevented with early detection and treatment through routine colon cancer screening.

Colon Cancer Progresses Through Stages

The stage of the colon cancer determines the appropriate treatment and determines the patient’s relative 5-year survival rate which is the percentage of colon cancer patients who live at least 5 years after being diagnosed. Colon cancer progresses in stages as follows:

  • Stage 0: The disease starts as a small non-cancerous growth, called a polyp, in the colon. Some of these polyps become precancerous, and over time, turn cancerous. Growth has not progressed beyond the inner layer (mucosa) of the colon.
  • Stage 1: The cancer has started to work its way through the first layers of the colon – the mucosa and the submucosa.
  • Stage 2: The cancer has advanced beyond the first two layers of the colon and is spreading deeper through the wall of the colon into the muscularis and the serosa but is not in the lymph nodes or distant organs.
  • Stage 3: The cancer has spread to one or more of the nearby lymph nodes.
  • Stage 4: The cancer has spread to other organs (typically the liver or the lungs).

Screening for Colon Cancer

In order to detect colon cancer early, everyone, even individuals who are not at high risk, that is, with no symptoms and with no family history of colon cancer, should be screened. Cancer specialists suggest that screening for such individuals start at age 50 and consist of tests that detect colon cancer in the body:

  • Colonoscopy, at least every ten years,
  • Sigmoidoscopy, at least every 5 years,
  • Double-contrast Barium Enema, at least every 5 years, or
  • Virtual Colonoscopy (computed tomographic colonography), at least every 5 years

These tests allow a doctor to actually see the growth or cancer inside the colon. The frequency at which these tests are repeated depends on what is found during the procedure.

Cancer specialists also recommend tests that look for blood in the stool, such as:

  • Annual Guaiac-based Fecal Occult Blood Test (gFOBT)

Such tests detect the presence of blood from tumors in the stool. Generally these tests are not as effective at detecting colon cancer as those that detect cancer in the body.

Stage of Colon Cancer Determines Treatments and Relative 5-Year Survival Rates

If the disease is detected as a small polyp during a routine screening test, such as a colonoscopy, the polyp can usually be taken out during the colonoscopy without the need for the surgical removal of any of the colon.

When the polyp becomes a tumor and reaches Stage 1 or Stage 2, the tumor and a portion of the colon on both sides is surgical removed. The relative 5-year survival rate is over 90% for Stage 1 and 73% for Stage 2.

If the disease advances to a Stage 3, a colon resection is no longer sufficient and the patient also needs to undergo chemotherapy. The relative 5-year survival rate drops to 53%, depending on such factors as the number of lymph nodes that contain cancer.

By the time the colon cancer reaches Stage 4, treatment may require the use of chemotherapy and other drugs and surgery on multiple organs. If the size and number of tumors in other organs (such as the liver and lungs) are small enough, surgery may be the initial treatment, followed by chemotherapy. In some cases the size or number of tumors in the other organs takes away the option of surgery as the initial treatment. If chemotherapy and other drugs can reduce the number and size of these tumors, surgery may then become an option as the second form of treatment. If not, chemotherapy and other drugs (possibly through clinical trials) may temporarily stop or reduce the continued spread of the cancer. The relative 5-year survival rate drops to approximately 8%.

As the relative 5-year survival rates indicate, the time frame in which colon cancer is detected and treated makes a dramatic difference. If detected and treated early, the individual has an excellent chance of surviving the disease. As detection and treatment is delayed, the odds start turning against the individual so that by the time the colon cancer progresses to Stage 3, the percentage is almost even. And the odds drop precipitously when the colon cancer reaches Stage 4.

Failure to Screen for Colon Cancer May Constitute Medical Malpractice

Unfortunately, all too often doctors do not recommend routine colon cancer screening to their patients. By the time the cancer is discovered – often because the tumor has grown so large that it is causing blockage, because the patient has unexplained anemia that is getting progressively worse, or because the patient begins to notice other symptoms – the colon cancer has already advanced to a Stage 3 or even a Stage 4. The individual now faces a much different prognosis than if the cancer had been detected early through routine screening. In medical malpractice terms, the individual has suffered a “loss of chance” of a better recovery. That is to say, because the doctor did not advise the individual to undergo routine screening, the cancer is now much more advanced and the individual has a much reduced chance of surviving the cancer. The failure of a doctor to advise the individual about screening options for colon cancer may constitute medical malpractice.

Vitamins For Ulcer

In the past people suffering from peptic ulcers were restricted from taking small amount of bland food and milk regularly. Researches however showed that this in no way helps in decreasing the recurrence of ulcers. However, a diet rich of fibers may minimize the chances of developing ulcers, and will help in fast healing of the existing ones. In particular, fiber found in fruits, vegetables are very protective, and with vitamin contained in most of these foods, the benefits are increased.

There are some evidences that show that exercise helps in reducing the risk of ulcers in some people. In a study in 2000, it was found that although exercise is helpful for men but it has null effect on ulcer development in women. Stress relief programs are not known to have an impact on ulcer healing. However, they have other health benefits that are useful.

Treat Ulcer with Vitamin A

When it comes to ulcers, the main role of Vitamin A is to protect the lining of the stomach so that the sore, if in case it developed already, won’t get worse.

Vitamin A also allows for the speedy healing of the affected areas of the small intestines. Patients suffering from peptic ulcer are advised to take foods rich in Vitamin A and dietary fiber such as fruits and vegetables.

Doctors would normally recommend peptic ulcer patients an initial dosage of 25,000 IU of Vitamin A daily for an entire week.

Then the dosage is reduced to just 10,000 IU everyday for maintenance. However, pregnant women or those who want to get pregnant are advised not to take more than 5,000 IU of Vitamin A daily.
Vitamin C can help Ulcer

Vitamin C works favorably for the patients of peptic ulcer because it directly inhibits the growth the very bacteria that cause the disease.

Also, if the H. pylori bacteria were abundant, it would directly impair the body’s absorption of Vitamin C. When this happens, the patient has higher risks of developing stomach cancers from the condition that merely started as peptic ulcer.

The normal dosage of Vitamin C for peptic ulcer patients is 1,000 mg taken twice a day. Because Vitamin C could induce diarrhea, the dosage can also be taken in a buffered form.

A hormone found in the brain that has a role in sleep is known as Melatonin. Researchers have found that the hormone might have properties that will help in preventing ulcers along with reduction in acid secretion and an improvement in blood flow. Until now, it is not known if it will benefit people with peptic ulcers but it might well do so. However, high doses of Melatonin have adverse affects like mental impairment, severe headache and nightmares.

In the past anti acids were the drugs that were preferred for ulcers but now it has been replaced with proton pump inhibitors. There are natural alternatives that work really well to heal ulcer and can be used with other prescribed drugs. Researchers claim Deglycrrhizinated licorice {DGL) as a good complement to the therapeutic measures recommended by your health care professional. DGL works positively by addressing the underlying factors causing ulcers rather than trying to hide the symptoms. DGL works by promoting the natural defense mechanism that is already present in our body to fight against ulcers. Other drugs that are also beneficial in curing ulcer carry some side effects along with them but DGL has no side effect.

Therefore, although there is no sure cure for ulcers but choices available for getting rid of it are many and a proper treatment will see you through. The patient must consult the doctor for proper treatment and correct guidance. If the patient reaches at the early stage, ulcers can be easily cured with fewer complications.

Carbuncles, Furuncles and Boils Oh My!

DO NOT SQEEZE A BOIL. Yes, it looks like a giant pimple and it is red and hot and has a head. Do not squeeze it. It is a communicable staph infection that you don’t want to drive into the blood stream. A Carbuncle is a boil with two or more heads and a Furuncle is a boil with one head. All will be treated here as just BOILS. A boil is NOT an acne pimple. Do NOT treat it as an acne pimple.

Whenever you deal with the boil, wear disposable rubber gloves. Launder some rags with hot water and bleach. Use them or paper towels, toilet paper, gauze or cotton squares. Everything must be clean and cleaned up afterwards. Everything must be thrown away.

With the clean, disposable rags, make hot compresses. Just put the rags in hot water and wring out. Hold a compress over the boil until the rag cools. Do this a few times a day until the boil comes to a head. You will see a green or yellow dot in the middle. The boil will be hot and painful. It may turn the skin red, yellow, gray or even green. Do NOT pick the head or dot in the middle.

Apply OTC Ichthammol 20% to the boil. If your drug store doesn’t have it, you can order it on line. The price is about $6. It is also called Black Ointment or Black Drawing Salve. Use a disposable implement to apply it: a tongue depressor, back of a plastic spoon, a plastic knife, or a gloved finger. Apply rather thickly to the center, and then bandage to keep the black off your clothes. Throw away the tools and gloves.

Some doctors say to leave the boil open to the air to dry it out. I prefer to cover it with a bandage or a cushion of gauze held on with adhesive tape. If the boil pops, the pus won’t get on your clothes and it won’t get on other people. A good pad of gauze can cushion the boil against discomfort from clothes or just daily living. If the boil oozes, it will stick to the bandage. This is GOOD. When you rip off the bandage, the head of the boil will stick to the bandage. This will open the boil so you can clean it.

When you are ready to clean the boil, wear disposable gloves and have an abundance of disposable rags or tissue, etc. Have plastic bags to throw away all the contaminated material. You are dealing with something highly contagious. Look at the boil and how it mounds up. Go the edge of boil where the skin is still flat. With tissue over your fingers, press down and OUT, away from the center of the boil. This is different from how you treat a pimple. Do NOT press IN. Pressing in could cause the infection to go deeper into your body. Press OUT. If nothing happens, leave it alone. Put on a hot compress; remove it; and then bandage.

Eventually when you press down and out, the head will pop and pus will come out. Clean it up with toilet paper or tissue. Look at the pus. What you are looking for is a core of hard tissue. It may be white, red, or green. It may look flat on the top and taper to a point like a cone. It may not come out the first time that you clean the boil. After pressing on one side of the boil, move your fingers perpendicular to the position that they were in, and press down and out again. This will be very painful to the “victim” so be gentle. Eventually no more pus will come out. Clean up the area and bandage. Put all the contaminated paper and gloves into a plastic bag to tie up and dispose of.

The next day, do the same. You may have more pus than the day before. When the core of hard tissue comes out you will feel rewarded because you know that you are on the road to recovery. The boil will drain more easily after the core comes out.

Every day continue with hot compresses, pressing OUT, and bandaging. Anytime that pus comes in contact with anything not disposable, clean the area or item with Clorox. Some people advocating putting a drop of Clorox on the bandage to kill the germs. I don’t usually do this because it can sting.

Eventually no more pus will come out. Keep the area bandaged until all weeping is finished and the boil heals.

Towels, wash cloths, sheets, pajamas, etc. used by the patient should not be shared and must be changed and washed daily in hot water with Clorox. It is better to take a shower than a tub bath. If the boil were to pop in the tub, the pus would get in the water. With a shower, the pus would wash off in the flow of the water. After a shower, the shower floor should be doused with Clorox. Rubber shower mats can be washed in the washing machine with hot water and Clorox. Strict hygiene measures must be followed to prevent the spread of boils to other areas of the body and to family members.

Strengthening your immune system with extra Vitamin C may help prevent and heal a boil. Some people believe that Echinacea and Golden Seal supplements act as natural antibiotics. Pregnant or nursing women should not take Golden Seal, nor should people with high blood pressure, kidney or liver problems.

How to Avoid and Treat Thrush when Bottle Feeding

The presence of thrush in a baby’s mouth can be painful for the baby and very upsetting for parents. Babies who are bottle-fed are more likely to develop thrush than those who are exclusively breastfeed. However, steps can be taken to lessen the risk of thrush developing, and treatment is quite easy.

Thrush, or oral pseudomembranous candidiasis, is a superficial yeast infection that is found in about 5% of healthy newborns. Babies usually acquire the yeast from their mothers during passage through the birth canal. You can tell whether or not your child has thrush by looking out for the telltale white patches that can be found of the inside of the cheeks, lips, palate and tongue. Many mothers who bottle-feed their baby often mistake milk residue found on the tongue for thrush. If the tongue is uniformly white, this isn’t thrush. The patches of thrush are often described as curd-like. Unlike milk residue, they adhere to the underlying tissue. You can also, test for thrush, by gently touching a patch with a gauze-covered finger. If it is thrush, it probably won’t come off very easily, but if it does, you’ll find a raw, red area underneath that may bleed. Thrush lesions can be painful and when bottle-fed a child can become fussy and squirm.

Why are bottle-fed babies more susceptible to thrush?

Many babies have thrush, but it is a self-limited condition; it goes away all by itself, without anyone ever knowing the baby had thrush in the first place. However, certain changes in baby or its environment can cause the thrush to be exacerbated. Antibiotics or stress can be to blame. Bottle-feeding often causes thrush because the lining of the mouth becomes abraded with prolonged sucking, such as babies who sleep with a bottle or pacifier – babies who are breastfed don’t go to sleep at night still sucking at their mother’s breast, unfortunately, many bottle-fed babies do go to sleep sucking on a bottle. Also, dirty nipples and pacifiers can harbour the yeast infection.

How to treat thrush?

First off, prevention is better than cure. Babies should not be put to bed while still sucking the nipple of a bottle. Avoid letting your child suck on a pacifier for long periods of time. Make sure all nipples and pacifiers are washed thoroughly and sterilized.

In most case thrush will disappear all by itself and the only treatment required is to alleviate oral discomfort or to treat (or prevent) painful yeast diaper rashes. You can use an antifungal medicine such as Nystatin suspension. This can be applied, directly to the plaques with a cotton-tipped applicator, or given orally 1-2ml four times daily. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. An old-fashioned, and still affective treatment of baby thrush is baking soda. Use a cotton-tipped bud dipped into a mixture of one-fourth teaspoon of baking soda and one or two drops of mild liquid detergent (without ammonia or bleach) mixed in a glass of warm water. Apply the mixture gently to the affected areas.

If symptoms persist or you have any concerns, seek medical help.

Babies who fuss during bottle-feeding, can do so for many reasons. If your baby is fussy when being fed formula, it’s worth checking to see if your child has thrush. If your child does have thrush, you need not change milk formula. Just apply a treatment as described above and the thrush should disappear in a matter of weeks.

Iodine For Thyroid Treatment – Myth Busted?

Straight out of the gate, let me say that iodine is essential for your thyroid to function properly.  In fact, many of us (if not most of us) are deficient in iodine and should consider an iodine supplement for thyroid treatment.  I’ll get into that in a minute.

The need for iodine is not what I’m challenging in this article.  I’m also not challenging the use of iodine specifically as a thyroid treatment.  I’m challenging a popular test used to determine if you are iodine deficient.

The Iodine Test

A popular test for iodine sufficiency involves painting some iodine on your abdomen and then observing how long it takes for the orange/yellow stain to disappear.  The theory is that if it disappears quickly, you are iodine deficient.  If it remains for 24 hours, you are iodine sufficient.

I’ve read about this test many times over the years and I’ve done the test about a half-dozen times over the past couple of years.  The test always shows that I’m iodine deficient as the stain disappears in just a few hours.

I’ve never been surprised at the outcome because I know that I’m borderline hypo-thyroid.  In other words, when my doctor has tested my thyroid function in the past, I’m consistently at the low end of the normal range.

However, I’m naturally suspicious until I see proof.  I wanted proof that this test was really giving me the true status of my iodine levels.  I guess I should have been born in Missouri – the “Show Me” state.

Show Me The Proof

I know that having sufficient iodine is important to my health so I decided to do an experiment to see if the “paint your belly with iodine” test was valid.

I have some 130 mg potassium iodide tablets and I used them to saturate my thyroid with iodine.  I took one tablet daily for two weeks to makeup any iodine deficiency that I might have.  After 2 weeks, I felt certain that my thyroid was saturated with iodine.

I then performed the “paint your belly” test 2 days in a row while still taking the 130 mg tablets.  What happened?  The stain disappeared in just a few hours.  Myth Busted!

That pretty much proved to me that the “paint your belly” test was an urban legend and was not an accurate indicator of anyone’s iodine status or the need for thyroid treatment with iodine.

More Research Needed

The results of my not-so-scientific experiment made me even more curious so I did a lot more iodine treatment research.

I found that idea of iodine being toxic at moderate to high levels is likely not true.  The idea that iodine can be toxic came for an experiment on rabbits and guinea pigs performed in the 1940’s.

The results were mistakenly applied to humans who metabolize iodine differently.  More modern research shows that our kidneys efficiently remove any excess iodine in our bodies in just a few hours with zero toxicity from iodine treatment.  Also, our grandparents took large doses of iodine as medication for multiple illnesses and they suffered no ill-effects.

I also learned that in the past few decades, the amount of iodine in our diet had been drastically reduced.  Iodine has been added to salt for a long time to insure that the population received enough to prevent goiters.  However, since low sodium diets are being recommended by doctors to reduce heart disease, many people have reduced their salt intake.  The results are that many of us do not get enough iodine.

Also, there is a lot of competition for access to our thyroid glands.  Chlorine in our tap water, fluoride in our toothpaste, plus the bromide in commercially baked breads all compete with iodine in the thyroid.  If we are getting a lot of chlorine, fluoride, and bromide, we are probably not efficiently absorbing the iodine that we receive.

My conclusion is that I need to be receiving supplemental iodine in my diet.  I can’t make any recommendations for you since the official party line is that excess iodine is toxic.  So, do a little reading and decide for yourself what is best for you.

The Last Thing I Learned

The one last thing that I learned in my research is that an iodine deficiency can take a couple of months to correct.  Therefore, even thought I believe that the “paint your belly” iodine test is not valid, I’m going to reserve my final judgment for a while.

For now, I think it’s an urban myth.  But, after I continue taking daily iodine supplements for several months, I’ll repeat the test and report my results.

Stop by at Unconventional Health.com/Iodine-For-Thyroid-Treatment every once in a while and see how my little experiment turns out.  Or, if you like, just subscribe to my RSS feed and receive an update whenever I post something new.

Best wishes for living life without an orange belly and keeping enough iodine in your thyroid – Cheers!

PS – Iodine does a lot more for your body than just make your thyroid work right.  Every cell in your body has iodine receptors.  God did not put them there just for fun.  But, that’s a topic for another time.

Hepatitis Part VI – How to Prevent Hepatitis With Nutrition

As we mentioned in previous articles, hepatitis is characterized by the destruction of a number of liver cells and the presence of inflammatory cells in the liver tissue caused by excessive alcohol drinking, disorders of the gall bladder or pancreas, medication side effects, and infections. Beside foods, nutrition also plays an important role in preventing and treating hepatitis.

1. Cranberry juice
Study shows that cranberry juice can be used as alternative antibody in helping our immune system fight off the hepatitis virus before it can do damage to the liver.

2. Lemon juice
Lemon juice contains high amounts of vitamin C that helps to fight against free radical build up in our body as well as detoxifying liver cells damaged by hepatitis viruses to regenerate, forming new liver cells.

3. Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar contains malic acid and acetic acid and it is effective against most viral diseases including Hepatitis virus.

4. Olive leaf
Olive leaf helps to improve immune system and contains achemical oleuropein which converts to elenolic acid in the body. The oleuropein targets viruses and bad bacteria before they can cause any damage to the body including liver, while relaxing blood vessels.

5. Peppermint
Peppermint is a stimulant that helps to relieve digestive disturbances caused by chronic hepatitis by stimulating the release of bile.

6. Honey
Honey provides the energy needed by the body for blood formation and blood cleansing. It also increases the liver's glycogen through the increase of blood glucose, helping the liver to function properly and fight against hepatitis virus.

7. Royal jelly
Royal jelly contains protein, vitamins B, C, E, niacin and pantothenic acid that helps to strengthen our immune system, protecting our body against any viruses including the hepatitis virus as well as cleansing toxic deposits in the body.

8. Green tea
Green tea contains the highest concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols that scavenge free radicals. It also seems to protect the liver from the damaging effects of toxic substances such as alcohol.

Kidney and Liver Failure

Your kidneys and liver are very significant organs, thus you need to keep them as healthy as possible. The main function of the liver and kidneys is to drive out all the toxins that rise from the body’s metabolism. Too much alcohol consumption damages liver function and could cause cirrhosis.

The disorder happens in up to 10% of patients hospitalized with liver failure. It might be an indication of approaching death, produced by the accumulated effects of liver injury and kidney failure, in people with acute liver failure, cirrhosis, or alcoholic hepatitis. It is made a diagnosis when other causes of kidney failure are ruled out.

Combined liver and kidney transplant seems to benefit patients with diseases in both organs, as well as people with a condition well-known as hepatorenal syndrome who have been getting dialysis for over two months, as stated by an article in the August issue of Archives of Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

A combined liver and kidney transplant is the method of alternative for patients with both end-stage liver disease and end-stage renal (kidney) disease, as maintained by background information in the article. Though, the choice is more problematical in cases when kidney dysfunction might be momentary.

At present, hepatorenal syndrome–potentially reversible kidney failure combined with cirrhosis or another liver disease–is frequently dealt with liver transplant alone and not a combined process. As waiting times for organs increase, more patients with hepatorenal syndrome will probable grow a chronic, irreparable condition that might need a combination transplant.

Treatment is intended at making better liver function, and making sure that the amount of blood in the body and the heart pumping action are sufficient. The disorder is in general treated in the same approach as kidney failure from any other cause. All needless medicines are ended. This is particularly true for the antibiotic neomycin, NSAIDS (pain relievers such as ibuprofen) and diuretics (“water pills”). Dialysis can improve symptoms. There are medications such as octreotide, albumin, and dopamine, which can be made use of as an impermanent measure to improve kidney function.

From Bones to Stones – Formation of Kidney Stones in Hyperparathyroidism

Kidney stones can cause a great deal of pain and may require surgical removal. A single stone the size of a grain of sand can cause such excruciating pain already. There are several factors which could facilitate the formation of kidney stones and hyperparathyroidism is one of them. But why is a hormone concerned mainly with bones involved in the formation of kidney stones? First, we must explore the functions of the parathyroid hormone itself.

The Parathyroid Hormone

The parathyroid hormone increases calcium and phosphate absorption from the bone. It does this by utilizing two mechanisms. One is a rapid phase in which the osteocytes are activated to pump calcium and phosphate ions from the bone fluid into the extracellular fluid. Another requires the activation of cells called osteoclasts. Unlike the osteocytes, parathyroid hormone does not directly exert its influence on the osteoclasts. Instead a signal from the activated osteocytes will further activate the osteoclasts to increase bone resorption activity.

Furthermore, parathyroid hormone also increases renal tubular reabsorption of calcium while it diminishes phosphate reabsorption. It also increases the rate of reabsorption of magnesium and hydrogen ions while it decreases the reabsorption of sodium, potassium, and amino acid ions in almost the same way it affects phosphate. Calcium reabsorption is increased mainly in the late distal tubules, the collecting tubules, the early collecting ducts, and even the ascending loop of Henle to a certain extent.

This mechanism maintains the amount of calcium in the body. If it were not for this effect of the parathyroid hormone on the kidneys, there would be constant loss of calcium through the urine. In time, this would deplete both the extracellular fluids and the bone of such a mineral.

Formation of Kidney Stones in Hyperparathyroidism

Some patients with mild hyperparathyroidism may show signs of bone disease but most of hyperparathyroid patients have the tendency to form kidney stones. This may be due to the fact that the excess calcium and phosphate absorbed by the intestines or mobilized from the bones under the influence of parathyroid hormone must be excreted by way of the kidneys, causing an increase in the concentration of these substances in the urine. Because of this, calcium phosphate crystals tend to form in the kidney, forming calcium phosphate stones. Calcium oxalate stones may also develop because even normal levels of oxalate will cause calcium precipitation at high calcium levels.

Most renal stones are also only slightly soluble in alkaline media. This is the reason why there is a greater tendency for renal stones to form in alkaline urine than in acidic urine. This is the logic behind the acidotic diets and acidic drugs frequently used to treat renal calculi or kidney stones.

Migraine Headaches Can Be Understood In A Different Way – Check Out Ayurveda

Migraine is a French word derived from the Latin word hemicrania, which means “pain in half of the head.” Ayurveda have unique dosha principles to understand migraines. Unlike a tension headache this type of headache does usually affect only one side of the head, bringing severe throbbing pain. Migraines consist of two phases. In phase one the blood vessels constrict and the brain receives less blood, leading to an early warning sign called an aura. Most often the aura consists of visual disturbances such as visions of light, bright or geometric shapes and lines, and tunnel vision.Other auras include sensations of a strange taste or odor, tingling, dizziness, slurred speech, ringing in the ears, and weakness in a part of the body. This phase may also include nausea, vomiting, chills, and extreme fatigue. As the next phase occurs, the blood vessels open abnormally wide, which stimulates the nerves in the blood vessel walls. The pain begins and is usually accompanied by extreme fatigue. A migraine may last for hours or days and most often affects women.

Such headaches tend to run in families. Ayurveda teaches migraine may be triggered by hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to foods; if you have persistent migraine headaches, allergies are an important consideration. Also at play may be alcohol, bright lights, loud noises, hormonal fluctuations such as occur with the menstrual cycle, and some drugs. As is the case with tension headaches, Ayurveda teaches migraines and their treatment differ from dosha to dosha:

  • Ayurveda Vata migraine headache: This headache starts on the left side and is associated with other common vata disorders, such as insomnia, constipation, and flatulence. It occurs during the vata time of day (two to six P.M. and two to six A.M.) and is aggravated by vata-aggravating foods: bitter, pungent, astringent, thy, hot, and spicy.
  • Ayurveda Pitta migraine headache: This type starts on the right side and is associated with pitta disorders such as heartburn, sensitivity to light, and digestive upset. It usually occurs in the middle of the night, worsens during the pitta time of day (ten A.M. to two P.M. and ten P.M. to two A.M.) and improves at night.
  • Ayurveda Kapha migraine headache: This headache is usually caused by ama in the form of mucus and is therefore described as sinus headache. Your migraine is of this type if, when you bend over from the waist, the headache feels worse.

Migraine headache can be so severe that home care measures (and most conventional medicines) don’t offer much help. Ayurvedic remedies prescribed by a professional are the best source of relief and prevention. However, following the Daily Lifestyle Regimen to balance your doshas may help minimize migraines.

  • Biofeedback teaches you how to warm your hands by increasing the blood flow to them. This appears to be effective in relieving migraine headaches for some people.
  • Try to discover what foods might trigger your migraine-several foods have been implicated, including chocolate, nuts, coffee, cheese, citrus fruits, and alcohol. Vata headache is frequently caused by indigestible food combinations, in particular combining milk with yogurt, bananas, or fish.
  • Understand A Very Unique Ayurveda Principle. Repression of natural urges and emotions is one of the most common causes of toxic accumulation and disease. This is especially relevant for migraine because a type of nervous tissue called majja produces tears as a waste product. It is extremely important therefore that you explore any emotions you feel may be trapped inside you.

HERBAL REMEDIES Start with the tri-doshic remedy (for all doshas), and if that is not effective, use one of the remedies for specific doshas.

  • For all doshas: Combine 2 parts brahmi (gotu kola) with 4 parts of either ashwaghanda (Withania somnifera) or shatavari (Asparagus racemosus); take 1/8 teaspoon of this mixture in 1/2 cup boiled milk or water. You may also combine 1 teaspoon vacha (calamus) with enough warm water to make a thick paste and apply to the forehead until the headache is relieved. You may also cut onions to stimulate crying; tears release toxic accumulations in your eyes, sinuses, and brain.
  • For Ayurveda vata and kapha: Combine 1 teaspoon cinnamon with enough ghee to make a paste and apply to forehead until the headache is relieved.
  • For Ayurveda vata and pitta: At onset of symptoms, take one ripe banana blended with 2 cardamom seeds and 1 teaspoon ghee. Repeat, if necessary, every 8 hours.

  • Taste: Vata and pitta types should emphasize sweet and bitter tastes, while kapha types benefit from pungent taste at this time.
  • Smell: Use the aromatherapy tailored to your dosha; for example vata types do well with sweet, warm aromas; pittas with sweet, cool aromas; and kaphas are helped by spicy, warm aromas.
  • Sight: Use yellow-green color therapy for vata; blue for pitta; and red for kapha.
  • Hearing: Listen to ragas during the appropriate hours of the day, depending on your dosha: Vata should listen to the noon or late-afternoon ragas; pitta to the midmorning raga; and kapha to the sunset raga.
  • Touch: massage the head, scalp,ears with sesame oil.

That Lump in Your Throat May Be Acid Reflux

There is a very common condition called globus pharyngis that is best described as feeling like there is a lump in your throat. Though this condition can be caused by many different factors, acid reflux is one of the leading causes of globus pharyngis.

Forty five percent of the population will experience globus pharyngis at some time or another in their lives. It can feel either like a solid lump or ball in the throat, or as fullness in the throat, close to the area of the cervical esophagus. The strange thing about gobus pharyngis is that though there is a specific, definable sensation to the individual sufferer, there is no detectable abnormality in the throat when examined by a doctor.

Currently no single explanation has been accepted as actually causing the globus sensation, however, GERD or acid reflux is among the leading factors attributed to its existence. Other suspect conditions are hypertensive upper esophageal sphincter pressure, sinusitis, overclosure of the bite, anterior cervical osteophytes, and certain psychological disorders.

Therefore, to treat globus pharyngis, doctors must systematically eliminate each of the potential causes through several forms of examination. This often includes a thorough ear nose and throat examination using an esophagoscopy (a small instrument with a light and camera that is inserted into the throat). It may also require a Barium swallow or counseling services.

In the case of acid reflux causing globus pharyngis, it is much more common in women than in men (though it is not unusual for men to experience it), and usually occurs between the ages of 40 and 60. Men who do suffer from globus pharyngis will often also have a mild case of dysphagia, which is the feeling of food getting stuck in the throat. More rarely, men will present with a severe case of dysphagia along with the globus pharyngis. Young men are more likely to suffer from both conditions at the same time.

Among the most effective treatment for the globus pharyngis condition are counseling – to let the patient know that everything is alright and that they’re not choking and their lives are not in any danger. Furthermore, treatment with rigid esophagoscopies will often ease if not eliminate the sensation.

To prevent the recurrence of globus pharyngis, treatment of GERD is recommended, as it is likely to be the cause in the first place. Speak to your doctor about your acid reflux and globus pharyngis symptoms to create a practical prevention strategy that can be worked into your lifestyle.

This will include instructions regarding changes to your diet both when you’re preparing your foods at home and when you’re eating out at restaurants, cafes, etc. You will likely be required to include some new foods into your diet, while reducing others that cause acid production to increase in your stomach, such as alcohol. You will also benefit from eating frequent, smaller meals throughout the day, instead of fewer large meals which cause your stomach to fill up and more acid to be produced, increasing the risk of reflux.
