If you have bipolar disorder you are not purposely being “moody.” Nor can you “just snap out of it.” A person who has diabetes cannot “snap out” of having diabetes; neither can you snap out of having bipolar disorder.

However, having bipolar disorder does not mean that you can’t take steps toward recovery from your illness. Many of you with bipolar disorder are struggling with accepting the fact that you have a real condition that prevents your brain from regulating mood properly. You may be reeling from the powerful effect this disorder has had on your life. But the more you learn about bipolar disorder, the more insight you can gain, and that will help you to better manage your illness.

Bipolar literally means two poles, implying that in bipolar disorder there are two basic “poles” or extremes of mood However, thinking of bipolar disorder in terms of two extremes of mood is misleading. It is more accurate to think of bipolar disorder as a wide range of moods.

What is mood ?

Mood is a very strong word. It comes from older words meaning mind, spirit, courage, and to strive strongly, be energetic. An even older word that mood comes from means custom or customary behavior. Thus mood means more than feeling happy or sad. Mood encompasses much of what we need to live. Mind, spirit, and courage, striving and energy, custom and behavior—all are related to mood and our sense of well-being. Thus having bipolar disorder affects us in many ways, presenting challenges as well as abilities such as enhanced creativity and sensitivity to the world around us. Many with bipolar disorder have influenced our lives and culture. These include Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Virginia Woolf, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Robert Schumann.

Bipolar disorder is about more than whether we feel happy or sad at a particular time. Bipolar disorder can be emotionally painful and have a major impact on our lives. At the same time it is a disorder that involves all aspects of mood. In addition to the challenges it presents, it also bestows gifts of seeing the world differently from others whose moods remain in a normal range.

As mentioned already, thinking of bipolar disorder as being two extremes of mood is misleading even though the term bipolar implies only two poles of mood—depression and mania. It is more accurate to think of bipolar disorder as involving a wide range of moods.

At its core is the brain’s inability to regulate mood. This inability to regulate mood within a normal range results in varying degrees of depression or mania. At times there may even be a mixed mood—a state that has elements of both depression and mania. In bipolar disorder your mood takes on a life of its own that is independent of what is happening in your life. Your mood thus becomes independent of your experiences. This “disconnecting” of mood and experience presents challenges in daily life. Sense of identity and self-confidence can be affected. Symptoms such as extreme irritability can affect relationships. Sadness and hopelessness can become overwhelming and even lead to suicide. The sense of self can be lost by not knowing what to expect from your moods from day to day or even from hour to hour or minute to minute.

What is normal mood?

Beginning with normal mood is important because it is the hardest mood to understand for a person who is experiencing bipolar disorder. Most people take for granted that they feel happy or content most of the time. Happiness or contentment describes normal mood. Especially if you are experiencing bipolar depression, you may not realize that most people feel happy most of the time. Most people have a stable mood that doesn’t have wide swings. Instability of mood is the hallmark of bipolar disorder. Such instability makes it difficult to recognize normal mood. Just as it may be difficult for you to understand normal mood, those around you may have difficulty understanding depression, hypomania or mania. For instance many people with normal mood will say that they are “depressed” when they are having a bad day. This is better described as having a “blue mood,” which quickly passes.

The difference between depression and a blue mood is that the blue mood may vary a bit but it remains within a normal range. Blue mood does not stay at an extreme for very long, but lifts after a short time. Also the ability to enjoy pleasurable activities remains. For example, if someone with normal mood is having a low mood, that person may decide to go to a movie with some friends. This may be enjoyable and may even lift that person’s mood. Depression differs in that it is much more intense and lasts from weeks to months or even years. Going to a movie does not help the person who is depressed to “snap out” of depression. In our example, a depressed person may not be able even to enjoy the movie.

What is depression?

Depression is an intensely sad mood that lasts for at least two weeks. It may be characterized by irritability (usually an anxious irritability), and loss of enjoyment. Take the above example of going to the movies. If you are experiencing depression you may not be able to enjoy a movie or an outing with your friends. Sadness, irritability and loss of enjoyment are emotional features of depression.

Depression also has cognitive features. Cognitive means thinking. In other words, thinking may be affected by depression. Often concentration and focus are impaired. Concentration is being able to pay attention to what you are doing so that you can complete thoughts or tasks. Focusing is keeping on track without forgetting what you are doing or being easily distracted.

A second cognitive feature of depression is that of a sense of worthlessness. This may take many forms. Examples are a belief that you cannot do things right, a belief that you have no friends, or a belief that you are a failure in life. Notice here that I am using the word belief to describe this cognitive feature. That is because a sense of worthlessness may have nothing whatsoever to do with the reality of your accomplishments, the number of friends you have or your success in life. The cognitive feature of a sense of worthlessness has nothing to do with your actual self-worth but everything to do with the thinking that can accompany depression.

Hopelessness is another cognitive feature of depression, which causes you to see the world in an unrealistic way. The thinking process of hopelessness makes sense to you because your thinking process is not working normally. If you feel like harming yourself or others, you need to be in a safe place. That place may be with others who can monitor your behavior, but more likely hospitalization may be needed until the extreme hopelessness passes. When you are in the depths of hopelessness you need to ask for help. This may mean calling your psychiatrist, your therapist, or a trusted person who cares about you. An alternative is to call a suicide hotline (1.800.SUICIDE) or to dial 911. Keep in your purse or wallet a note that says, “I am feeling suicidal. I need help.” When you are not suicidal show it to a few trusted people and give them instructions about how to get help. You can use the note when you feel suicidal but can’t ask for help.

Our bodies are also affected by depression. You may sleep too much or too little, yet always feel tired. You may lose your normal appetite or have too great an appetite. You may have a headache, stomach ache or fatigue. Or you may find yourself crying without being able to stop.

What are hypomania and mania?

Hypomania is a word that confuses many people. Hypo means under and hypomania is a mood that is “under mania.” It is not as extreme as mania but lies somewhere between mania and normal mood. Hypomania is a bit harder to recognize and often remains hidden. Mania is more easily recognized.

Mania is an expansive mood just waiting to be seen by all. Because mania is often pleasurable, you may not want treatment for mania. Getting treatment may feel a bit like giving up a good friend. Unfortunately, the mania’s friendship brings serious challenges into your life that can make it less manageable. Lifelong treatment seeks to even out your moods so that you can be happier and accomplish your goals in life. Untreated mania will lead to instability and will greatly disrupt your life.

There are two kinds of bipolar disorder, Bipolar I and Bipolar II. Bipolar I is characterized by mania; bipolar II differs in that it is characterized by hypomania. Both include swings into depression, but depression tends to be the dominant mood in bipolar II. In order to diagnose bipolar disorder, hypomania or mania must be present at some time and depression must also be present at another time.articleIn the discussion that follows, mania will refer to both hypomania and mania.

We will continue by examining the emotional features of mania. Unstable mood is the hallmark of mania. Mania is an exercise of “catch as catch can” because your mood shifts rapidly. For example, you may have sudden bursts of energy contagious to everyone in the room. You may laugh loudly, tell jokes, and almost perform for those around you. But this mood is unstable and within a short time you may move on to a completely different experience of being unable to sit still. This restlessness might cause you to walk quickly out of the room to begin a different activity.

Another emotional feature of mania is that of irritability. The irritability of depression has an anxious quality. In mania the irritability is one of being easily frustrated. You may feel as though you could crawl out of your skin. The irritability of mania is often mistaken for anger. Anger differs in that it targets a specific focus, while irritability is without a particular focus. Anger’s target could be another person’s actions, a circumstance or perhaps a perceived failure of yourself or others. When you experience the irritability of mania you feel volatile and any little thing can set you off. You are easily frustrated. Mania’s irritability often causes difficulty in relationships, especially if others interpret your irritability as anger.

Mania also has cognitive or thinking features. One of these is grandiosity. With grandiose thinking, you may have ideas and plans so expansive and difficult that they are impossible to accomplish. In mania, however, you are convinced they are well within your capabilities. For example, you may believe you can climb Mount Everest even though you have never even seen a mountain before. Other cognitive features of mania include poor judgment, disorganization and lack of impulse control. When you experience these features of mania, you may have difficulties with relationships, find yourself overwhelmed by clutter, or go on spending sprees. These cognitive challenges can result in troubles at home, work or in your community.

One feature of mania affecting the body is that of increased energy in spite of decreased sleep. You can go for days to weeks with little sleep or even no sleep and yet have high energy. (Compare this to the extreme fatigue often associated with depression.) Mania’s high energy can result in rapid speech or racing thoughts. When you are having these features, you may not perceive them as “rapid” or “racing.” Instead it may seem that the rest of the world has slowed down. Your thoughts can seem intrusive, taking off on topics other than those you want to address. You can feel agitated and as though you cannot sit still or stop moving. However, when mania is less extreme, you may become more productive than normal and may accomplish tasks in a more efficient manner than other people who do not have bipolar disorder.

Psychotic features may also occur such as hearing things that are not present or seeing things that are not there. If these latter symptoms occur you need to call your doctor immediately or even call 911, especially if you feel that you are in danger to yourself or others. If things get this severe, others will often intervene because you may not be able to recognize that you need help.

How can I meet the challenge of bipolar disorder?

The core challenge in bipolar disorder is the brain’s inability to regulate mood. Understanding this is crucial in learning to manage your illness. When your brain is not keeping your mood within a normal range, you are challenged to seek treatment. Medications and psychotherapy, sometimes called talk therapy, can help you. It is important to realize that the goal of treatment is not to take away your personality and creativity. It is to help regulate your moods so that your personality and creativity shine through in a healthy, productive life. Because treatment works you will feel better and be able to accomplish your life goals.

You can also find help through education in your community and through bipolar recovery groups. Bipolar disorder is treatable and you will feel better and be better able to accomplish your life goals if you seek treatment. Support from others helps you learn how to manage the challenges of bipolar disorder.

– Decrease the amount of fat in your diet. Do not add much oil, butter or other types of fat to your food. Do not consume much fast-food or ready made food that often contain great amount of added fat.

-Avoid altogether chemically altered fat, so-called trans-fat. This type of fat is often found in margarine and is often added to many types of cookies.

-Avoid great amounts of saturated fat, as found in fat milk, fat diary products, coconut products and butter.

– Still you need some fat. The fat you mostly need are mono-unsaturated fat as found in olives, olive oil, rape oil, canola oil and almonds, omga-3-polyunsaturated fat found for example in fish, seafood and flax oil and omga-6-polyunsatyrated found in sunflower oil, soy oil, corn oil, sunflower seeds and many types of nuts.

– Much of the fat you still choose to add to your food should be oils with mono-unsaturated fat like olive oil, rape oil, almond oil or canola oil. Marine oils or flax oil can be added to get enough omega-3-fat. You can also use some soy oil, corn oils and other types of natural oils with a high content of omega-6-fat, but do not use too much of these to avoid over-consuming this type of fat.

– Avoid consuming great amounts of salt. Do not add much salt to the food you ccok, and do not eat great amounts of ready made salty food. When it is hot in the weather or you are in high physical activity, you will however need some more salt, and must consume some more than elswhere.

– Eat some nuts, almonds or sunflower seeds several times each week, since these food types give you fat valuable for your circulatory health.

– Eat fish at least every second day. Use lean meat, lean poultry, mushrooms, seafood and lean diary products in the food you make.

– Consume a moderate amount of carbohydrates. Avoid adding great amounts of sugar to your food. Avoid consuming much sweet drinks, cookies and snacks with great amounts of sugar and other carbohydrates.

– Use carbohydrate sources that contain fibre and that let the carbohydrates be taken up over some time, for example full corn bread and cereals, beans, peas and fresh fruit.

– Eat vegetables and fruit to each meal in order to get enough vitamins, minerals, fibres and anti-oxidants. They should be raw or only gently cooked so that the content of nutrients is not washed out.

– A moderate alcohol consume is good for your blood circulation, especially red wine, but over-drinking has the opposite effect.

– Avoid excessive eating. Eating too much is not good for your blood circulation even though you eat sound food.

In this article, we will discuss other types of heart diseases that can affect any part of the heart including the following:

I. A cardiac tumor can be either malignant or benign

A) Benign tumors

1. Myxoma

Myxoma is a cardiac benign tumor. It is the most common tumor inside of cavities of the heart and most of them occur in the left atrium of the heart obstructing the normal flow of blood within the chambers of the heart. Symptoms of Myxoma include paroxysmal dyspnea, weight loss, feverhemoptysis, lightheadedness and sudden death.

2. Rhabdomyomas

Most of rhabdomyomas occur in children or infants and are associated with tuberous sclerosis. It develops in the myocardium or the endocardium and accounts for about one out of every five tumors that originate in the heart causing obstruction of blood flow, valvular insufficiency, and cardiac arrhythmias. Symptoms of rhabdomyomas include palpitations, chest pains, shortness of breath, and nausea.

3. Fibromas

Fibromas develop in the myocardium or the endocardium. These tumors are composed of fibrous or connective tissue and tend to occur on the valves of the heart and may be related to inflammation. Other than seeing or feeling the fibroma, there are no usual symptoms.

4. Teratomas of the pericardium

It is often attached to the base of the great vessels, usually occurring in infants. They are rarer than cysts or lipomas, usually causes no symptoms.

B) Malignant tumors

Malignant tumors that originated elsewhere in the body and spread to the heart are more common than ones that originate in the heart. Malignant heart tumors can originate from any heart tissue. They occur mostly in children.

1. Angiosarcomas

Angiosarcomas account for about a third of all malignant heart tumors and usually start on the right side of the heart. The cause of angiosarcomas is usually unknown and symptoms of angiosarcomas differ according to the location of the tumour. Often symptoms of the disease are not apparent until the tumour is well advanced.

2. Fibrosarcomas

Fibrosarcomas occur as a soft-tissue mass or as a primary or secondary bone tumor. The 2 main types of fibrosarcoma of bone are:

a) Primary fibrosarcoma is a fibroblastic malignancy that produces variable amounts of collagen

b) Secondary fibrosarcoma of bone arises from a preexisting lesion or after radiotherapy to an area of bone or soft tissue. Symptoms of fibrosarcomas include broken bone, pain, swelling, lump found under skin or bone, frequent urination and urinary obstruction.

3. Rhabdomyosarcomas

Rhabdomyosarcomas are a cancer made up of cells that normally develop into skeletal muscles of the body and are also more common in children. They usually have some type of chromosome abnormality in the cells of the tumor, which are responsible for the tumor formation. Symptoms of rhabdomyosarcomas include bleeding from the nose, vagina, rectum, throat and tingling, numbness, and pain.

4.) Liposarcomas

Liposarcoma normally appears as a slowly enlarging, painless, nonulcerated submucosal mass in a middle-aged person. Symptoms include palpation, weakness, limitation of motion weight loss, fatigue, and lassitude.

II. Sudden cardiac death

Clinical Diagnosis of kidney failure:

Diagnosis of it is not a tough ask as there are numerous tests to find out the disease. Diagnosis is basically done by examining the blood. Parathyroid Glands Gone Bad – Causes of Benign Tumors and Other Disorders of the Parathyroid Glands

On average, a person has four parathyroid glands – two of which are located in the posterior left lobe of the thyroid gland and another two on the posterior of the right lobe. Combined, these four weigh less than 500 mg. Each gland is composed mainly of chief cells, which synthesize and secrete parathyroid hormone or parathormone or PTH for short.

PTH is responsible for resorption of bone in cases of low calcium levels. These hormones tap into the calcium-rich source which is the bone and act on the osteocytes and osteoclast to begin pumping calcium out of the bone and into the extracellular fluid. As with all substances in the body, it is necessary that the body's systems keep a close watch over the balance of PTH and calcium concentrations. An excess of PTH called hyperparathyroidism could cause a weakening of the bones due to excessive calcium and phosphate resorption, while a decrease of which would result in hypoparathyroidism, which could result in tetanic spasms due to a severe deficiency of calcium in the blood.

Benign Tumors

The development of benign tumors is one of the most common causes of parathyroid disorders. In 90 percent of cases, only one of the glands will develop a tumor while the rest stay happily normal and responsive to changes in the body. The tumor, however, will continue to secrete the hormone regardless of the shift in the balance in the body.

Tumors in the parathyroid are almost always never cancerous. In these glands, the development of cancer is very, very rare. However, the fact that these tumors still produce more parathormone than necessary is genuine cause for worry.

The mechanisms for the development of these tumors are generally unknown. It has been speculated that it may develop due to a genetic factor in much the same way that breast tumors develop. There may be some people who are genetically predisposed to developing the tumors.

The prolonged use of lithium for therapeutic purposes may also cause the development of benign tumors. Among the other possible causes of benign tumors, these cases have a higher risk of developing more than one tumor. Tumors caused by prolonged use of lithium generally show up after 10 to 15 years of therapy.

Another cause is the prolonged use of radioactive iodine as treatment for hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancers. Just like lithium, the tumors develop after a long time – much longer than lithium at 20 years or so. Unlike lithium, however, the prolonged use of radioactive iodine usually causes just one gland to be affected. The other three or so glands remain without tumors most of the time.

Parathyroid Hyperplasia

This type of disorder is caused by an overgrowth of the glands themselves. Unlike the benign tumors which only affect one or two of the glands, hyperplasia happens simultaneously in all four or more of them. Like benign tumors, however, it has not been fully explained how these glands grow to the degree that they do in parathyroid hyperplasia.

Treatment of hyperplasia involves the removal of most of the glands, leaving just a part of the normal gland behind to continue secreting adequate amounts of parathyroid hormone. This is quite unlike benign tumors, where only one or two glands are removed because in hyperplasia, all four of the glands are causing the problem so your surgeon will have to remove most of them and leave you with just a rather healthy gland to do the necessary work.

Patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome or MEN may also develop hyperplasia but cases of MEN are very rare. In MEN, hyperplasia develops in patients as young as ten years old. These patients need constant monitoring by a specialist because they could always develop another tumor or hyperplasia even after an operation.

Hereditary Forms of Hyperparathyroidism

Of all the disorders of the parathyroid glands, this is among the rarest, occurring in only about 2 percent of all parathyroid patients. All three reasons can make the body retain abnormal amounts of water and can have serious consequences on your health. If you are a sufferer and notice signs of edema (fluid retention) anywhere in your body -immediately go to see a doctor or other medical professional.

Don’t wait until it gets worse, you have to understand that there are underlying reasons for the edema and can be really serious. Some kind of intervention should be done immediately (like correcting your electrolyte balance with medications that will help your kidneys cope better).

The other thing I should mention here is that some bulimics complain about heaviness and puffiness in their body that they think it is due to fluid retention but it is not. It is a perceptional problem they have that is called “broken eye syndrome”. This is when a person perceives that they are bigger then they really are.

They feel that their body is expanding and getting bigger everyday but in reality there is no abnormal fluid retention. It is only the person’s perception that there is: so they take more laxatives or diuretics and the problem gets worse.

To conclude, fluid retention in bulimia sufferers can occur for a number of different reasons: some of them are more serious than others. One thing is for certain: all of them need to be corrected sooner or later. The best way to do this is to get checked immediately by a medical professional to avoid serious complications.

The Flu Shot

Every year we hear we need to get the flu shot or aka the Influenza shot with flu season around the corner. We see it advertised in all our pharmacies and on television commercials. Where does the flu come from, how is the vaccine made, why do we get the vaccine in the fall, are there any side effects to getting the vaccine? With so many questions in my mind, I decided to do some research into this matter. Here is what I found out about the flu and the flu shot:

  1. Scientists do not know exactly how the influenza virus first originated however they have concluded that it somehow started in migratory waterfowl like wild ducks and geese. The flu virus populates inside the cell lining of the bird's intestinal tract.
  2. The flu virus spreads from animal to animal and from animal to human. It starts with birds and pigs. The flu spreads from person to personthrough airborne droplets from the nose or throat of an infected person, ie coughing and sneezing. You can not get the flu from cooked meat.
  3. The flu virus is categorized into three categories, A, B and C. A is the most common and serious and can cause large epidemics. B is less severe and will not usually cause large epidemics. C is the mildest, will not cause an epidemic and is similar to the common cold.
  4. The flu vaccine has been in existence since 1945.
  5. The flu infects the nose, throat, bronchial tubes, and lungs and can lead to pneumonia.
  6. There are many different strains of the flu virus and it mutates year after year.
  7. The flu virus originates in Southeast Asia or Europe.
  8. The World Health Organization predicts which strain of the flu will occur in the winter and develop a vaccine. They take a trip to China each year to determine what strains are occurring.
  9. The vaccine takes 6 months to produce.
  10. The vaccine is made from purified and fertilized chicken eggs. The process itself is a lengthy one.
  11. The eggs used for this process are hard to come by.
  12. 100 million eggs are used in the US for the flu vaccine.
  13. The vaccine contains weakened or dead strains of influenza.
  14. The viruses are grown in chicken eggs, then killed with formaldehyde, purified and packaged in vials and syringes. Live viruses are packaged for the nasal sprayer version.
  15. The flu shot contains Type A and Type B influenza and this year's shot contain the H1N1 virus.
  16. The flu vaccine is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the American College of Physicians (ACP) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).
  17. People should be vaccinated between August and September prior to the colder months when we stay inside more for longer periods. The flu occurs from April to September in the Southern Hemisphere.
  18. Vaccine is recommended for all people 6 months and older.
  19. The injectable vaccine may cause soreness, redness and swelling at the injection site which is seen in 15-20 percent of the people receiving the shot. One percent of the people will develop chills, fever and muscle aches, these flu symptoms are less severe than the flu itself.
  20. The flu vaccine has been proven to be 70% – 90% effective in people under 65 years old. The percentages vary due to matching a vaccine to the various flu viruses in any given year.
  21. The flu vaccine should not be given to children under 6 months old and to people who have a severe allergy to eggs or people with a history of Guillain-Barré syndrome. The nasal spray should only be used by people 2 to 49 years old and who are not pregnant.

Now that I have learned more about the flu vaccine, I understand why there is a vaccine but I still have more questions. The vaccine reduces the number of flu cases and controls the spread and development of more serious life-threatening respiratory illnesses like pneumonia. But the flu vaccine is only 70% – 90% effective, that means 10% – 30% is ineffective. If we are taking all these medications are we destroying all the antibodies in our system that could fight a more severe mutation? Another concern of mine is what the long-term effect of these shots and sprays are? Yes, the vaccine has been around since 1945, but maybe it is contributing to other diseases, like Autism or Alzheimer's. Is there statistical data from those people who have received the shot consistently since 1945?

In my research, like the PROS that favor receiving the flu shot, there are CONS in favor of not receiving the shot. The Con group feels that the CDC promotes the flu shot for mere revenue purposes. They feel the CDC promotes false or misleading statements with claims that the flu shot will prevent respiratory ailments like pneumonia however pneumonia is a bacteria and not a virus like influenza. They also believe the CDC falsifies the number of deaths from the flu. The CDC advertises thousands die from the flu when in their reports they have only a few hundred. How many people die from pneumonia that had a flu shot? My sister, for example, had the flu shot and developed pneumonia in the same year and one of cousins ​​had the flu shot and then developed pleurisy. Also, the predictions of what flu strains will be prevalent in a given year are not always accurate, some years they have been completely wrong. Did we all die because they were wrong or was there an increase in flu cases those years? The flu virus predication is a guessing game. People receiving vaccines may be getting it for no reason if the wrong virus is used that year. There is also controversy over the preservatives used in the flu vaccine. One preservative is Thimerosal which is used in many medications to prevent bacterial contamination. It has mercury known as ethylmercury which is different than fish mercury known as methylmercury. High levels of methylmercury can be toxic. Studies of ethylmercury say it is safe but in an effort to reduce mercury levels of all kinds, manufacturers have changed their production using less of this mercury or none at all.

Well there you have it with what the flu shot is all about. Are you totally confused on whether or not to get the shot? I am on the fence and have never had the flu vaccine. I am approaching my senior years, however, I am not dead yet from getting the flu several times. I may change my mind when I am older and my body becomes frailer or I have a near death flu experience but in the meantime while I am still strong and healthy I opt not to get it.
