Mending the Bones With Reiki

How Reiki is used to help mend broken bones and treat common bone related disease such as osteoporosis, arthritis, rheumatism and genetic illnesses:

Among the alternate therapies, Reiki has gained popularity among Doctors and other practitioners as a non invasive and natural healing method that is efficacious in seemingly mysterious ways.

The Universal Life Energy is an energy that is omnipresent, omnipotent and all pervasive. It has a soothing vibration and a divine quality that vitalizes the body being healed and the healer simultaneously. The practitioner receives the energy through the crown chakra or the knowledge chakra and becomes a medium of energy transfer. Reiki, with an innate intelligence flows to the areas that require healing.

The energy flow of the body matches the structure of the body and the skeletal framework defines the structure of the body. In fact, it is believed that energy meridians are formed first in the fetus before the physical structure is formed and the former acts as a guide map for the latter. Any break in the skeletal framework will result in the disruption of the smooth flow of energy. This will traumatize the entire body and the resulting disease will impact on the physical and psychological well being of the person.

The root chakra is the energy center that is associated with the skeletal framework of the body. All diseases relating to the bones arise due to imbalance in this chakra. Sometimes, the energy flow in this chakra gets blocked due to bone injuries. Bone related diseases that can be treated by Reiki are osteoporosis, fractures, arthritis, rheumatism and genetic illnesses that arise due to deficiency in the bone marrow.

While Reiki can treat all injuries to the skeletal structure without recourse to any invasive techniques, it is necessary that fractures are set before Reiki is applied to the break. This is because Reiki will begin to knit the bone immediately and if it is not properly set, it could result in further painful surgery.

Case study

Mr.S’s job involved sitting for long hours at his desk. Over the years he had developed severe pain in the lower back and was experiencing numbness down his left leg. His leg felt cold and clammy and his foot appeared pale and bloodless. When he came to the Reiki clinic, he was limping and his face was lined with pain and desperation. He sat down with great difficulty and squirmed in his seat to find a position that was least painful. Finally, he pulled up his legs to his chest and hugged them with his hands while he pushed his head forward to his knees and heaved a sigh of relief. His voice was low and strained and he was constantly rubbing his left leg as if to restore circulation in it.

A quick scan of his aura indicated that he had energy blocks in his root chakra (a deep grey black), and almost all the minor chakras at the arch of the foot and knee joint. Since the chakra at the arch of the foot is connected to the root chakra and the solar plexus Chakra, blocks were visible in both these (deep grey). As the chakra at the knee joint is connected to the fifth and sixth chakras grayish clouds were visible on these chakras at the aura level.

Mr. S revealed that he was in his early sixties and had got a surgery done for fusing his vertebrae in his spine five years ago. The osteopathic treatment for the back pain that followed had not helped much and his Doctors had given up hope of giving him relief. Body scans and x rays showed that his bones were in their correct places and his pain had nothing to do with prolapsed discs or broken vertebrae. They recommended some more osteopathic treatment. He was not enthused by the suggestion. The pain was constant and of late he was experiencing numbness in his leg. As his condition worsened, he became desperate and even began to think that he would soon die. His world seemed to shrink into his back pain. He could not focus on his job and he was fast becoming convinced that he could not continue in his job. He felt economically threatened and very insecure. He felt that life was not worth living if the pain could not be arrested. He was fed up with painkillers and did not want to continue with them.

Reiki had been recommended to him by one of his friends, who swore by it. So he had come to the Reiki clinic in the hope that he would find some help here. He then asked pathetically, “Can you guarantee a cure for me? Do you think I can live a pain free life?”

I assured him that Reiki is a wonderful intelligent energy and that he would feel the impact of the energy even with the first sitting. I told him that we would have him dancing at the end of a few months. He was a little skeptical but consented to try it anyway.

Since he was already in the clinic I suggested that we should begin the sessions immediately. He agreed and we began. He lay down on his right side and pulled up his legs into a fetal position to ease the pain. While working the different hand positions, I noted that his leg was cold and clammy. He could not move it with ease. There was hardly any energy flowing into his leg. When I questioned him about it, he said that he often felt that circulation was very poor in his left leg and that the whole leg was very heavy and he had a constant dull ache radiating from his thigh to his foot.

The first impact of Reiki is a feeling of bone deep relaxation. Patients tend to fall asleep during Reiki. Mr.S too fell asleep and only woke up when we called him at the end of the session. He was extremely surprised and said that he had not been aware of falling asleep and he had slept dreamlessly and painlessly after a long time. He said the pain also appeared to have subsided slightly after treatment….

At the end of the month (after many ups and downs) Mr.S was finally able to say that the pain had subsided sufficiently for him to give him hope. He was able to turn over in bed without groaning and moaning and he was able to stand for fifteen twenty minutes without looking around for a straight-backed chair to ease his aching back.

Thereafter, it took almost seven twenty one day, one hour sessions to heal his back and bring back a modicum of circulation to his left leg. From the seventh to the tenth month he received weekly sessions of one hour each to completely erase the blocks in his foot and knee chakras.

Mr. S is now able to lead a normal life. He is able to focus on his work and is expecting a promotion soon. He still comes to the clinic to spend the time of day with us and help out with the other patients. He is a great asset to us as he tells all the patients who come in the wonderful work Reiki has done for him. He boosts their confidence and helps us through the sessions with his enthusiasm and optimism-which is very infectious! We are persuading him to learn Reiki. He has promised to enroll for the next convenient session.

Reiki does not interfere or discourage other forms of medical treatment. It complements and enhances the effects of the treatment being received. Today a vast amount of clinical knowledge exists to prove that disruption of energy flow in the body can result in aches and pains in different parts of the body even when they do not manifest as physical problems in x rays, MRI or different kinds of body scans available in hospitals. However, they cannot be dismissed as a figment of their imagination. Aura scans can give a fairly accurate indication of where the discomfort lies and correcting the energy level at the related chakra would clear up the problem immediately.

How Can Cerebral Palsy Be Detected?

Most often than not, the first symptoms of cerebral palsy is noticed by parents of the affected child. Cerebral palsy is a medical condition, which is caused because of permanent injury to the brain. This injury to the brain can happen anytime, whether before, during or after birth of a child. The brain injury causes the muscles to become stiff and prevents them from being moved with ease. This medical condition is not one that is progressive in nature.

There are a number of symptoms, which you as a parent can look out for in your child if you do feel that your child is indeed abnormal. Seizures, spasms, hearing problems, poor eating habits, hyperactivity and of course learning disorders are the most common symptoms to look out for in a child with cerebral palsy.

Nearly all children who are affected by this disorder are prone to drooling. Because of their incapacity to be able to control their tongue and throat muscles these children find it difficult to swallow their saliva and it naturally comes out through their mouth. While it is easier to detect these symptoms in children who are much older and affected by this medical condition it is a challenge to detect it in new born infants.

Most of the symptoms of cerebral palsy however begin to show up before the child is eighteen months old. If the medical condition is of the more serious kind then it will be visible even when the baby is just 3 months old. Babies with cerebral palsy will not be bale to achieve the same milestones that normal children of the same age do. A child with cerebral palsy will take more time when it comes to doing things like crawling, sitting, rolling over, smiling and even walking. One of the first symptoms you can spot in your 3-month-old baby would be the failure of your baby to smile at you. All babies begin to recognize their mothers by the time they are three months old and they often smile when they see them. If your baby does not smile at you even after the fourth month then you had better consult your physician or pediatrician at the earliest.

With Infants cerebral palsy would Often not react to noise; have poor feeding habits and very irregular breathing. They find it difficult to suck and feed as their tongue, throat muscles are affected, and they have little control over them. As they grow up, they will find it difficult to talk and would exhibit abnormal speech, which is most likely to be incoherent.

While some children can be mentally retarded, others are extremely intelligent though both these types of children do suffer from cerebral palsy. Most children with cerebral palsy also are known to throw tantrums and often exhibit violent behavior, which can be difficult to control at times.
Other symptoms, which you can look out for in children with cerebral palsy, would be their jerky and awkward movements, which are caused because of their inability to have any control over their limb muscles. They tend to keep their hands clenched always and their postures are unusual.

Got a Sore Throat? Try These Natural Remedies

Almost everyone has suffered from sore throat at one time or another. For many of us this unpleasant experience occurs more than once a year. This particular infection can be viral or bacterial, however, majority of the time it is a contagious viral infection. Some of the contagious viral infections include a cold, flu, and mononucleosis. Although the bacterial throat infections have to be cured with doctor prescribed medications, the viral infections can be treated by many successful at home remedies.

One of the oldest and the most trusted ways in relieving sore throat is with apple cider vinegar. Many people gargle with this concoction upon experiencing the initial uncomfortable aches. Several times per day will usually do the trick. This natural remedy tends to ease the pain almost immediately. Another great remedy for reducing throat pain comes from the consumption of garlic. Many people swear by this technique as it relieves the pain almost instantly by coating the throat and soothing the soreness. However, some people are comfortable with simply cutting a garlic clove into little slices and eating it plain. An alternative way would be to make the garlic clove into a paste and place it on a sandwich. This way the burning effect is not as strong.

And a third and final remedy in reducing throat pain comes from cayenne pepper. Numerous people swear by this technique. You can gargle with the product or add it to your tea or coffee. There are many different recipes available online, so if you don’t like cayenne pepper with your coffee, you might find something else that you won’t mind drinking. So the next time you are suffering from a viral sore throat infection, try applying some of these natural remedies.

Learning to Walk Again After Spinal Cord Injury? How My Faith Healed Me!

Has something catastrophic ever happened to you? Where your life changed in an instant? Did you wake up in a hospital bed, not knowing where you were, or how much time passed? It happened to me. I never thought I would be hit by a car at sixteen years old, while crossing the street on my way to school. Nor did I think once I survived the accident, it would live with me every day for the rest of my life.

I was flown to the University of Michigan hospital, where I underwent 12 hours of emergency surgery. My injuries were so severe, doctors predicted I might not make it through the night. The first several days were critical. My spine was dislocated, and broken at the L1-L2 level. I had a fracture in my C1 vertebrae, a broken left femur, a broken right tib fib, and a broken left tib fib. I was paralyzed. I'm lucky it was not worse! And that was not even all of my injuries.

It's no wonder doctors told my family I would be paraplegic my whole life. With those injuries people do not come out alive, let alone walk.

Almost eighteen years have gone by, since that dark rainy October morning. Today I'm thirty-four, I walk everywhere with two forearm crutches. I practice with one cane! It's a miracle from the Lord I'm alive, and able to walk. Last year in 2011, was the first year I took some steps in physical therapy with no walking device!

I graduated high school on time, and walked with a walker to get my diploma. The whole stadium stood, clapped, and cheered, some even cried. I made it through college in my twenties, and earned two degrees. I contract for a Global Language Training company, and teach English to business people in the US I also teach classrooms at a Language center. I live alone, and take care of myself.

I'm grateful to God for how far I've come.

What if it were you? What if you became Spinal Cord Injured? What if you could not walk? Could not work? How would you support yourself?

Only 26 percent of people with severe injuries are able to find work, compared to 81 percent of non-injured people. The likelihood of finding work for the able bodied is almost three times higher than for the disabled!

What if you lost your support system, family, and friends? Let's face it, being disabled is never popular. There's a lot that comes with Spinal Cord Injury. It's not only physical, there are also psychological effects. It can rob you of life! Especially if you're young, I think it's more detrimental.

When it came time to leave the hospital, I felt deeply saddened. How would life be in a wheelchair? How would I go back to school, paralyzed? What was to become of me? I knew the visits would lessen, the calls would start to fade. I feared I'd be just a burden. I was scared. I had one hope, my faith. And I held onto it.

'Til this day, I still hold onto it

It's never too late to heal from Spinal Cord Injury. Do not believe the ol 'adage that you get the most out of your recovery only two years after. I'm still making progress.

You should never give up. The little things count, and can equal up to the big one! Even if you do not see results right away, you should press on in faith.

Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy Bone Disease on Dogs

Hypertrophic osteodystrophy or HOD is a condition that affects young large breed dogs. HOD is a bone disease that affects the rapid growing bones of giant dog and may occur between ages of 2 and 7 months. The breeds that are at high risk for HOD are Boxers, Chesapeake Shepherd Dog, Golden Retriever, Great Dane, Irish Setter, Labrador Retriever and Weimaraner, although there can be exceptions to this rule. Commonly, large male dog breeds are more affected than females. Inherited or genetic link seen to be affects in occurrence of this disease.

There is currently unknown or no agreement on the cause of Hypertrophic osteodystrophy. Possible causes maybe considered are; bacterial infections, canine distemper virus infection, vaccination with distemper virus or any other viral infections. Also Vitamin C deficiency is also speculated, hence the decreased uptake of Vitamin C and/or increased uptake of other vitamins and minerals other than vitamin C. The excessive calcium supplementation is also included as one possibility. There may be a link to recent vaccination with a modified live vaccine, but no specific vaccine has been implicated. on Weinmaraner dog breeds, it is recommended for them to receive killed virus vaccines instead of modified live or separate vaccines for canine distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus to prevent the possibility of vaccine-induced HOD.

The signs and symptoms of HOD strict in often to be mild to moderate painful swelling of the growth plates in the leg bones of dogs. It most commonly affects the ends of the radius, ulna (the long bones from the elbow to the wrist) and tibia (the long bone from the knee to the hock). Lameness may vary from mild to sever, reluctance to stand if multiple limbs are affected. Fever, anorexia, loss of appetite and depressions are noticed. Swelling and heat are commonly present over the affected bones. Some clinical signs also includes diarrhea, discharge from the eyes, tonsillitis, thickening of the foot pads, pneumonia, and abnormal development of the enamel of the teeth. Dogs suffering really proper petsafe and care.

X-ray signs of HOD are more clearly noticed. A line of lucency where the bone has been destroyed is usually found to be parallel to the growth plates of the affected bones. X-rays show a dark line at the metaphysis, which can progress to new bone growth on the outside of that area. This represents microfractures in the metaphysis and bone proliferation to bridge the defect in the periosteum. Some signs seen on microscope are also clear. The growth plate is normal, but blood vessels adjacent to the growth plate are frequently dilated. Bleeding in the bone adjacent to the growth plate and extensive death of the bone adjacent to the growth plate. Adjacent to the line of lucency is a zone of increased density of bone that corresponds to collapsed of layers of dead bone. The outer layer of the bone (periosteum) is thickened with new bone formation.

The treatment for HOD is generally supportive since this is a very painful condition and these disease is usually self-limiting which can last a few weeks. Treatment includes intravenous fluid therapy, anti-inflammatories and painkillers such as buffered aspirin or carprofen (Rimadyl) are given and needed enough rest on their comfortable pet beds. In addition, the animals are usually given a broad-spectrum antibiotic since bacterial infection is suspected. Since the dog might be too irritable and uncomfortable, strict rest on a comfortable warm bed is recommended. Feeding a nutritious, highly palatable food will help to encourage some dogs to eat. In severe cases steroids may need to be given to control the pain, but because of the possibility of this being a bacterial disease their use may be contraindicated due to their immunosuppressive qualities. Supplementation of Vitamin C is contraindicated due to an increase in calcium levels in the blood, possibly worsening the disease. Permanent skeletal deformity can occur, recurrence can be a problem until the dog reaches maturity and dogs usually do not die of the disease rather are euthanatized if recovery is poor or if clinical signs are severe.

Shingles – Not Just For the Over 60 Crowd

In late summer 2009, I was enjoying a lovely Labor Day holiday with three generations of my family, frolicking, relaxing and bonding. As much fun as I was having, something was nagging at me. I felt an overall fatigue, had a daily headache over my right eye and soreness in my eyebrow that felt like the eruption of an ingrown hair. But none of these signs, separate or together, could have prepared me for the monster which was about to unleash. Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus had descended on me and mine.

When I say “me and mine”, that’s exactly what I mean. This is not just a personal trauma. Shingles ophthalmicus, or any other type, moves in bag and baggage taking over your life like an unwanted relative. It was in fact a full-blown fiftieth birthday present, and one that couldn’t be returned. It has also become the unwanted gift that keeps on giving, popping up from time to time in the form of pain, malaise, light sensitivity and itching. All these issues intrude on your daily life and the lives of your family.

Shingles gets its name from the Latin cingulus meaning girdle since many individuals who contract shingles get them on their trunk. Other areas include the legs, arms, neck, face and, for me, the eye. My case was textbook as far as zoster cases go. When I explain this to people, 9 out of 10 will remark that they have never heard of shingles in the eye. In reality, there are over 250,000 cases of zoster ophthalmicus annually in the U.S. which account for 10-20% of all cases.

Shingles is a viral disease exhibiting a blistering skin rash which mainly erupts on one side of the body in a limited area. The virus, varicella zoster, is more commonly known to cause chickenpox. Once chickenpox has run its course, the virus lives on latently in nerve cell bodies with virtually no outward symptoms. At a future point, this “sleeping” virus can escape from the nerve cell body and cause a viral skin infection in the nerve’s area. According to the New England Journal of Medicine in an assessment done the week my shingles appeared, approximately 98% of the U.S. population, men and women equally, are infected with the varicella-zoster virus.

My vesicles, or blisters, began to appear in my eye, then around my eye, over my brow, then onto my forehead stopping right at about the Ash Wednesday mark. This tell-tale design denotes the trigeminal cranial nerve involvement which is responsible for facial sensation and also incorporates the ophthalmic nerve which controls sensory skills for the forehead and scalp, the conjunctiva and cornea, the upper lid and the eye-socket and its contents. When all I could think about was pulling out my eyebrows, this virus was gearing up for the big assault. My headaches were also a part of the ophthalmic onslaught, as was the recent hair loss I had been experiencing, according to my dermatologist.

Once the vesicles began to pop and crust over, I figured I could put some ointment on them and carry on with life. Then the pain arrived. No one could have prepared me for the extent of what followed. Post Herpetic Neuralgia happens to about 20% of the 1,000,000 zoster patients per year and I was one of them. There is an approximate six-week period with which I am not familiar. I went from a person who never took medications to never being without them. My face could model for the special effects department of a Steven Spielberg movie. I lost 10 pounds even though I started out at a weight just below 100. Sleeping became my new exercise program and my new best friends were pain pills and the cat, which stood guard over me like I was Tutankhamen. If I had scratched my forehead any harder, I would have reached bone. Even the ghost in our 85-year-old house checked on me. She probably thought she was finally going to get some company.

Then, at a routine progress check, my ophthalmologist gave me the name of a pain management specialist. This man took control of the situation as aggressively as my shingles had taken control of me. We went through pain medication restructuring and began nerve block treatments to stop the pain messages to my brain, allowing my ophthalmic nerve to recover and begin working again. For the first time since I began my antiviral medication, I began to see the light of day. Literally. A side effect of zoster ophthalmicus is light sensitivity. None of the vampire series have anything on me. I couldn’t go out after dawn either.

Although there are side affects from my medication, I am now vertical, have sight and am able to generally go about my life. Things that should not be ignored in the case of Zoster Ophthalmicus include unexplained hair loss, headaches, brow pain or a stinging or foreign body sensation in the eye itself. These episodes singularly or together can spell months or even years of pain if not acknowledged in a timely fashion. When shingles are suspected, beginning a course of antiviral medication immediately can mean a better managed patient. With ophthalmicus, it can mean the difference between keeping your vision, or losing it. Even after the worst has passed, daily stress and weakness from the zoster attack can leave one open to further episodes. A maintenance course of antiviral medication may be an option your doctor will suggest.

There is some prevention for this affliction, though limited in its scope. There is a vaccine, Zostavax, which incorporates a weakened chickenpox virus to stimulate the immune system to help fight the virus. The vaccine is only for people over the age of 60 as this demographic has shown to be the group which suffers most from the symptoms of the disease and has the longest recovery periods due to the blisters running deeper into the skin. Zostavax is not prescribed for current shingles sufferers as it only a preventative measure. It does not work on Post Herpetic Neuralgia and may not be appropriate for certain individuals with specific allergies.

In recent surveys and blogs, however, it is evident that a wider range of age groups are becoming personally familiar with this unnerving disease. There are a variety of further breakouts including race, age, even geographic locations which can go on for pages regarding statistics on which group in what location have higher or lower incidences of shingles.

My sabbatical was a five-month period. Before I could return to work, I needed to feel 100% and look 100%. You see, ironically, I am a medical device rep who calls on ophthalmologists. Any MD or OD would be able to take one look at me and see what I had been through, which was not optimal. I had a wonderful village of doctors who put me back together; an optometrist, an internist, an ophthalmologist, a pain management specialist and in the end, a dermatologist and a plastic surgeon. They diagnosed, treated, reviewed their results and got very creative with a 27-gauge needle to make my scarred forehead look more like it had been eaten by a Pekinese rather than a Saint Bernard.

I am actually a very fortunate individual. Shingles came to visit and hasn’t completely left; it stops in from time to time to send its regards, however, my friend Valtrex shows it the door. I have my sight, which was closer to being lost than I care to acknowledge. Being slapped flat did give me time for pause. I have a deeper regard for my friends and family who all stepped up in a large way. I don’t rush around and worry as much as I used to. I take time out, and literally stop and smell the roses in my yard. I finished a full-length mystery novel, the first in a series, while lying in bed. This was especially difficult at times due to various medications which impaired my vision. And because of the permanent nerve damage at the brain stem, colors seem a bit brighter, smells are stronger (for better or worse) and my thought processes have broadened, also for better or worse.

I wouldn’t recommend shingles; that’s not the gist of my blessings summary. But when life gives you shingles, you either put up a roof, or lie down and let them crush the life out of you. I would have to say, at this point, I have a beautiful crown over my head.

Diabetes Definition, Symptoms, Treatment & Causes

Refers to diabetes mellitus or, less often, to diabetes insipidus. Diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus share the name “diabetes” because they are both conditions characterized by excessive urination (polyuria).

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic health disorder. Chronic means that the condition lasts for many years. Diabetes can cause serious health problems. These problems include kidney failure, heart disease, stroke (see stroke entry), and blindness. About fourteen million Americans have diabetes. As many as half of these people do not know they have the condition.

Diabetes Causes : Drugs such as steroids, Dilantin, and others may elevate the blood sugar through a variety of mechanisms. Certain other drugs, such as alloxan, streptozocin, and thiazide diuretics, are toxic to the beta cells of the pancreas and can cause diabetes. Certain syndromes (for example, Prader-Willi, Down’s, Progeria, and Turner’s) may result in a hyperglycemic state; if this state is prolonged, the result can be permanent diabetes.

Pre-diabetes is a condition where people have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Most people who develop type 2 diabetes have pre-diabetes first. Most people who have pre-diabetes are unaware that they have it or that they are at risk of developing diabetes. People with pre-diabetes often develop type 2 diabetes within 10 years. Pre-Diabetes is also called impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or impaired fasting glucose (IFG).

Diabetes mellitus type 2 is not an autoimmune disease like the type 1. In this type of diabetes mellitus, the body is not attacking itself. Diabetes mellitus type 2 is caused due to malfunctioning of the pancreas, which is incapable of producing the required volume of insulin. The pancreas does produce some insulin, but it is insufficient to meet the total requirements of the body in utilizing glucose.

Diabetes Treatment : The major goal in treating diabetes is to minimize any elevation of blood sugar (glucose) without causing abnormally low levels of blood sugar. Type 1 diabetes is treated with insulin, exercise, and a diabetic diet. Type 2 diabetes is treated first with weight reduction, a diabetic diet, and exercise. When these measures fail to control the elevated blood sugars, oral medications are used. If oral medications are still insufficient, treatment with insulin is considered.

Adherence to a diabetic diet is an important aspect of controlling elevated blood sugar in patients with diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has provided guidelines for a diabetic diet. The ADA diet is a balanced, nutritious diet that is low in fat, cholesterol, and simple sugars. Weight reduction and exercise are important treatments for diabetes. Weight reduction and exercise increase the body’s sensitivity to insulin, thus helping to control blood sugar elevations. For more, please read the Weight Loss and Fitness articles.

Swollen Tonsils – What Exactly Caused My Swollen Tonsils?

It's not always easy to diagnose swollen tonsils. In most cases, the swelling is entirely attributable to some viral or bacterial infection; however, it is not always clear what type of viral or bacterial infection is present. For instance, the swelling could be caused by the common cold, the flu, or even chronic tonsillitis. In other cases, it can be caused by Strep or Staph infections. And in other cases, the swelling is not caused by an infection at all. Rather, it is caused by the presence of tonsil stones or some other irritant.

Viral and Bacterial Infections

If you have swollen tonsils as the result of a viral or bacterial infection, then you will have certain symptoms that you would not accompany tonsil stones. For instance, you might have a mild fever, or swollen lymph glands.

On the other hand, you will have certain symptoms that overlap with what might be caused by tonsil stones. For instance, you might have bad breath, difficulty swallowing, or a white film on the surface of your tongue. Since these symptoms overlap, you can not use them to determine what condition is present.

In any case, if you determine your swelling to be the result of something viral or bacterial, it is best to see a doctor.

Tonsil Stones

If you have swollen tonsils as the result of a condition called "tonsil stones," then you will have the aforementioned overlapping symptoms. Additionally, if you open your mouth wide and look in the mirror, you will probably also notice that you have hard, white masses on your tonsils. These are the so-called "tonsil stones."

If this is the case for you, then you should start by trying to get rid of the stones on your own. You can do this by using oxygenating toothpaste, gargling saline solutions, and brushing your tonsils lightly with a moistened q-tip. All of these methods will help to dislodge and prevent the emergence of stones. If none of this works, you should consult a doctor.

If you're experiencing tonsil swelling, there are several possible causes. It could be viral, bacterial, or related to some chronic or temporary condition. Consider the aforementioned methods to distinguish between the possible categories when determining why you have swollen tonsils.

The Health And Beauty Connection

Health and Beauty are closely related. One cannot expect to be beautiful without working on maintaining good health, and vice versa. Health means having a body that works efficiently; and beauty is the outward manifestation of good health.

Poor health can be visible and therefore affects your beauty, or the way you appear to others. Some obvious outward signs of poor health and beauty are dark circles around the eyes, obesity, acne, hair loss and dry skin. Some less obvious signs are white fingernails or white dots on fingernails, creases between the eyes, brittle hair and dandruff.

These signs prove the relationship between health and beauty. They could be indicating an underlying condition. For example, dark circles under the eyes could indicate liver toxicity, thyroid or kidney problems. White bands near the fingertips or white dots on fingernails could indicate poor circulation, and even heart diseases. Horizontal ridges on nails could indicate poor absorption of proteins and vitamins. Inability to lose weight could indicate improper eating habits, genetic links and a host of medical conditions.

Here are some health and beauty tips:

• Drinking plenty of water for health and beauty is something that cannot be underestimated. Although a general rule of thumb is drinking 8 glasses of water a day, the amount varies from person to person.

• For perfect health and beauty, you must incorporate 30 minutes of exercise 3 to 5 times a week. A sedentary lifestyle can lead to obesity.

• Your lifestyle and eating habits play a very important role in maintaining health and beauty. Eat a healthy balanced diet, and avoid smoking and too much alcohol.

• Deal with stress. Research has shown that music helps you relax and alleviate stress.

• Health and beauty spas help you relax and have an invigorating effect physically and mentally.

Information on Diabetes Mellitus and Diabetes Insipidus

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that prevents the body to utilize glucose completely or partially. It is characterized by raising glucose concentration in the blood and alterations in carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism. This can be due to failure in the formation of insulin or liberation or action. Since insulin is produced by the ² cells of the islets of Langerhans, any receding in the number of functioning cells will decrease the amount of insulin that can be synthesized.

Many diabetics can produce sufficient insulin but some stimulus to the islets tissue is needed in order that secretion can take place. In the early stages of the disease the Insulin Like Activity (ILA) of the blood is often increased, but most of this insulin appears to be bound to protein and is not available for transport across the cell membrane and action of the cell.

The hormones of the anterior pituitary, adrenal cortex, thyroid and ± cells of the islets of Langerhans are glucogenic, that is, they increase the supply of glucose. Possibly they could increase the demand, decrease the secretion or antagonize and inhibit the action of insulin. The body releases hormones that raise blood glucose levels to provide a quick source of energy for coping with stress. In the stress conditions diabetes mellitus may precipitate with genetic predisposition.

Diabetes Insipidus is a condition that shares some of the symptoms of diabetes mellitus, large urine output, great thirst and sometimes a large appetite. But in diabetes insipidus these are symptoms of a specific injury, not a collection of metabolic disorders. The impaired pituitary gland produces less anti-diuretic hormone, a substance that normally helps the kidneys retain water.

Diabetes Information – Understanding Diabetes Mellitus as a Serious and Common Disease

When we hear a physician diagnose someone as having diabetes (without any limiting modification), he is, in all probability, referring to 'diabetes mellitus.' This condition is characterized by superfluities of glucose in the blood and urine resulting from an abnormal carbohydrate metabolism.

Diabetes mellitus is a serious and common disease. In the United States, medical records show that it occurs in about two percent of males and close to five percent of females. Its onset is possible at any stage of life. In most cases, diabetes mellitus manifests itself after some serious infection or injury. It may also become evident due to emotional strain. Persons who are overweight are known to suffer from this disease more than those who are within the normal weight range.

Symptoms of diabetes mellitus are almost the same for cases that commence during childhood and during the adult years. These include an excessive production of urine, an ardent desire for liquids, a feeling of weakness, and itchy skin. A medical examination of a person who has diabetes mellitus will reveal the presence of glucose in the blood in an amount that is much higher than the normal volume. This excess blood sugar is caused by the inability of the body to use up glucose as quickly as it is stored and released by the liver. Consequently, rather than being utilized for energy production, glucose that builds up in the blood gets washed off along with the urine.

Certain secondary conditions are likely to develop if diabetes mellitus remains untreated. One such serious complication is kidney disease. The loss of bladder control – resulting in the urge to urinate frequently – is also possible. Likewise, the skin and other body tissues become more prone to infections. In more serious cases, losing consciousness is almost always a certainty.

A lot of medical experts point to diet as probably the most vital factor in the successful handling of diabetes mellitus. A person with this disease can enjoy a normal diet, taking care that he or she neither eats to excess nor consumes too little of the needed nutrients. Controlling the blood-sugar level by means of administering insulin is another important factor in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Heat Rash,Causes and Treatments

Did you ever go through this scenario? You feel itchy and notice some pink bumps and red spots on your body. A friend says it looks like prickly heat rash. Symptoms include itching and a couple of blisters. One thing that is different in your schedule is that you’ve been exercising more. In the past, doing yoga, there was no sweat rash because it was gentle yoga. But now since the injury has healed, you are engaging in more strenuous exercise. Does this sound like you.

If you want to get rid of heat rash, it’s important to cool the body down by using a fan, being in an air-conditioned room or showering in coo or warm water. After the shower, let the air dry before putting on clothing. Corn starch, baby powder, aloe and vitamins a and d cream are helpful to those with this ailment. Others find medicated powders, zinc oxide lotions and anti-chafing creams useful.

After a few days they dry and form yellowish crusts. Although the sore heals in six to ten days, the virus remains in the body in a latent form in the nerve trunks. A recurrence can be triggered by excess exposure to the sun, a fever or other bodily stresses. The incubation period is two to twelve days after exposure. And the child usually feels a burning, tingling or itching sensation at the spot where the sore will appear. Although highly contagious, the virus is only contagious when the sores are visible. It is not contagious during the latent period while the virus hides within the nerve trunks. There is no cure for the virus and treatment centers around relieving discomfort and preventing secondary infections.

Among babies or infants, heat rashes occur due to their developing sweat glands which fail to transport sebum or natural oil to the skin’s surface. Heat rash in babies generally occurs on the forehead, neck and shoulders. In adults, heat rash is often a result of the sweat pores getting blocked by the sebum and dead skin cells. The elbow, neck, chest and breast are the affected areas of the skin in adults.

While it can be irritating and frustrating, prickly heat is not usually a serious condition. Adult heat rash can be easily treated and usually clears up within a matter of days. As soon as you begin to notice clusters of small blisters which come and go with exposure to warm weather and sunlight, you should take some immediate self help measures. The primary step to take is to avoid wearing tight clothing, particularly when exercising. The more air that can get to the skin, the better off you’ll be as that acts as a natural healing agent. In cases of infant heat rash, it is recommended that you allow the baby to go without a diaper whenever possible.

During the early months of World War II, American troops battling for the islands of the South Pacific were also doing battle with an annoying rash known to doctors as miliaria and to the rest of us as ‘heat rash’ or ‘prickly heat’. The intense burning and itching sensation of prickly heat is caused by a blockage of the sweat ducts. Strained by intense heat and humidity, the body’s evaporative cooling system breaks down, and instead of being exuded through the pores, sweat becomes trapped beneath the skin, resulting in a rash that feels like its name.

If you live in or visit a hot, humid climate then heat rash will be something you will need to manage on a day to day basis. During the hottest time of the day, try and keep cool by staying indoors where air conditioning or fans are keeping the temperature regulated.

Also, where possible try and wear loose fitting clothes made from natural fibers such as cotton. The loose fit will allow for air flow keeping you dryer, and natural fibers are breathable materials so they allow heat to escape. Synthetic fibers such as polyester and microfiber on the other hand are synthetic fibers which trap the heat in. They are great for keeping warm in winter but definitely not appropriate if you want to keep cool in summer.

Obesity – The Underlying Historic Causes

The scourge of obesity has reached such gigantic proportions across the world that it is now termed as globesity. The obesity is now accepted as a global epidemic and governments are pouring in money and resources to fight this menace, which is quietly swallowing the economic gains of a country.

Obesity is a relatively a new disease which has become widespread only in the past 50 years. Research in US indicates an increase of 1% obesity levels every year for the past 20 years and this rate 100% of US population would be overweight by the year 2040. Rest of the world is not far behind what with globalization. The work culture, global fast food chains, carbonated colas and beverages having spread across every country in the world corrupting the good food habits of the world.

One must understand the underlying historic causes and trends that have brought about obesity to combat it effectively individually as a society.

What are the trends that have resulted in obesity to reach such proportions?

The changing work culture:

Industrial revolution ushered in the automation and assembly line cultures where people were required to perform tasks with the least waste of movement, assembling maybe a single part or piece of an equipment or product possibly throughout their working tenure.

Extra and unwanted movements were strictly controlled even to the extent of limiting breaks for rest and restrooms. This resulted in low physical activity.

The 9 to 5 fixed work culture with strictures on leaves and holidays further brought about a reduction in social interaction to the minimal. Performing mechanical tasks for most part of the day, the employees were mentally tired with no social outlet. To make up for an uninspiring and mechanical work environment people began to find snacking and watching endless soap operas and sporting events as an alternative.

Improvement in Transportation

Improvement in the mode of transportation speeded up life to an extent that people spent more time working and commuting longer distances to find work. There is little need to walk distances. The improvement in transportation from cars to subways to flying sometimes even on a daily basis leading to insufficient physical and metabolic activity. The pace of life became accelerated thousand fold compared to the laid-back 18th century lifestyles. This resulted in high stress leading to an increased craving for carbohydrates and high-energy foods. This slowly created the high calorie high-energy fast food culture, which though provided instant gratification and energy was however devoid of nutrients. Such a fast food culture created increasing weight and high levels of obesity

Development of Technology

Technology has affected the way we live and work. From cooking to computers, everything is just at the touch of a button involving very little physical activity. This sedentary lifestyle resulted in low metabolic activity and calorie burning. Physical activity has been reduced to exercising in gyms or at home again with equipments, which may not really exercise all parts of the body uniformly resulting in the increasing weight and obesity.

Role of Information Technology

Information technology has again influenced the work culture. No more the need to visit customers or prospects and business associates for meetings. You do everything using computers, internet and intranet, video conferencing and teleconferencing. You do not even need to walk down to your boss to hand over a file or discuss issues regularly. You do everything through the computers or intercoms. Even commuting to work is now being dispensed with telecommuting and work delivered to your home. Technology has even enabled the work to be outsourced to different countries with no physical contact needed. The trend is only likely to accelerate creating less physical movement and accumulation of bigger waistlines.

Fast food business model

The fast food business model has affected our lives like nothing else before. The fast-paced technology driven lifestyles created an extremely stressful work culture, displacement of family, low physical activity all resulting in the inability of the body to break down sugar has lead to an increased craving for instant and quick absorbing, cheap energy foods. Fast foods and sugared beverages quickly emerged to take advantage of this evolving need and rake in the moolah at an immense economic cost to the individuals, the governments and society. These fast food companies glamorized and spread the fast food culture worldwide as the cheap alternative to time consuming home cooking. By the time realization dawned of the ill effects of the junk food being dished out, it became too late. The fast food industry has now developed adequate financial muscle to even buy legislation favoring it especially in economically weaker nations. The generation X is now totally sold over on these fast food (if they can be called food at all) with all the advertising glitz and glamour.

The wheel has come full circle. If we need to escape the scourge of the technological advance, we need to redesign the way the planet earth lives. Technology has to be an enabler of better health and lifestyles and not be the source of destruction of the humankind. People have to start going back to the basics in at least in matters of diet, physical activities and spend more time in pursuits, which will result in better health. Obesity and overweight needs to be tackled by designing a new lifestyle that will integrate technology with natural living.
