Pain In Shoulder Lifting Arm – Possible Causes

Why is it that you have pain in your shoulder when you raise it up towards the ceiling? Before we can get into why that might be, it is important for me to outline that you have to get an accurate diagnosis of your shoulder pain before even guessing what it could be.

The diagnosis is crucial to ensure that you do not injure yourself and that you don’t cause more damage to your shoulder joint, since it could be a variety of different injuries.

To get an accurate diagnosis, you can have a consult with a physician, a specialist, or a physical therapist who could do some manual testing on your shoulder to determine if it might be something like arthritis, a tendon or ligament problem, or simply a mechanical problem such as impingement.

After an accurate diagnosis is made, whether it be manual or special tests like x rays or an MRI study, a plan of treatment can be devised and you can systematically work at correcting the problem and rehabbing yourself.

So what are the type of shoulder pain causes out there?

Since the shoulder is a multi directional joint, in other words it rotates, flexes, extends, abducts and adducts, it could be a variety of things.

The joint has to take a lot of load and movement, there’s a lot of wear and tear which can cause tendinitis, arthritis, impingement and tendon tears.

A rotator cuff lesion is basically a tear.

Your rotator cuff is comprised out of four different muscles that attaches around the bony area of your humerus. Sometimes, due to trauma or repetitive strain, you can have a tear in different grades where the muscle tendon attaches to the bone.

Usually, this will not heal by itself and needs to be repaired surgically, and after that, adequate exercises to rehab your shoulder.

A precursor to this type of injury might, many times be inflammation in the muscle tendon and this could be because of repetitive lifting due to a muscle imbalance, even poor posture.

You’ll see that there’s a reddish color that starts occurring in the muscle tendon, which leads to increased blood flow and irritation, and inflammation of that area. That’s why it’s so painful to touch or when you raise the arm, for example, up towards the ceiling.

Another reason could be an impingement. This simply happens when you lift your arm and, between the arm and the bony area of your scapula part of the muscle and tendon is physically being impinged, which leads to inflammation and pain. And if that’s not corrected, for example, correcting your posture and strengthening your back muscles so that you can have a little bit more freedom of movement in that region, the pain will increase and you will lose motion as well as strength in your arm.

This is just a few examples of conditions that can occur in your shoulder and cause pain when raising your arm. But We’ll go into more depth about some specific exercises for specific conditions in your shoulder joint, but this is a good starter and I hope it’s been helpful to you.

Cerebral Palsy Cure

To even suggest there might be such a thing as a "cerebral palsy cure" only a handful of years ago would surely have invited a storm of criticism and even denunciation from doctors, researchers and the media. But today this is not deemed an impossible dream or something on the fringe. Advances in biomedical science, especially with respect to the use of nonembryonic or adult stem cells, holds great promise for turning the tables on some aspects of cerebral palsy (CP) such as spasticity. Actually even some Ivy League universities are now doing leading edge work with adult stem cells for cerebral palsy.

For example, beginning around 2008 Duke University pediatric neurology researchers began treating cerebral palsy in children using cord blood transfusions. And at Medical College of Georgia researchers has done work on animal models of CP (rats) using cord blood stem cells, and are now preparing to carry out a clinical study involving forty (40) children with CP.

Interestingly, at least five (5) years before either of the aforementioned schools embarked on their line of clinical research, doctors in Mexico and other countries were already busy treating children and infants with CP using pure cord blood stem cells and reporting some impressive results. In fact, during 2004-5 Fernando Ramirez, MD and his medical team in Tijuana conducted an informal pilot study involving eight (8) children with CP who received injections of umbilical cord blood derived stem cells. Eight out of eight children showed some improvement in mobility and / or cognitive function. One participant named Adam Susser went into the study cortically blind due to atrophy of his optic nerves and began tracking objects during the fourth month following his treatment. Adam went into the study with virtually no chance of ever seeing according to experts at a major Florida vision institute.

This study was published in the free access scientific journal Medical Hypotheses & Research (3: 679-686) during 2005 and is but one of many such reports that suggest a "cerebral palsy cure" is within reach.

Another leading edge experimental treatment for CP is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT.) In HBOT patients in a sealed chamber breathe 100% oxygen under pressure for a set time. In CP it is typically administered for one hour, once or twice daily, for five or six days a week. The oxygen increase to brain tissue is thought to bring minimally functioning or dormant brain cells to life.

Various studies have shown that HBOT does benefit CP patients, though these findings are disputed and far from conclusive. Many experts, however, contend sufficient grounds exist for additional clinical trials.

While it can not be said modern medicine is close to a cerebral palsy cure, there are many good indications it is moving closer to this long sought goal.

Information on Bile Duct Cancer

The bile duct is a thin tube, about 4 to 5 inches long, that reaches from the liver to the small intestine. In the liver, it begins as many small channels that gather bile from the liver cells. These all join into one tube or duct (this part of the bile duct is called the hepatic duct). About one third of the way along the length of the bile duct, the gallbladder attaches by a small duct called the cystic duct. The combined duct is called the common bile duct.

The most common symptom of bile duct cancer is jaundice. Jaundice occurs when the liver cannot get rid of bile, and one of the chemicals in bile called bilirubin “backs up” into the bloodstream. Bilirubin is greenish yellow and colors all the body tissues, including the skin and the white part of the eyes, making people with this condition begin to look yellow. Because bilirubin also contributes to the brown coloring of bowel movements, the blockage of its flow into the intestine might lighten the color of one’s stool. Bilirubin will also come out in the urine and turn it dark.

The top half of the bile duct is associated with the liver while the bottom half of the bile duct is associated the pancreas. The bile duct enters the part of the intestine called the duodenum into a structure called the Ampulla. Blockage of the bile duct causes build up of the bile in the blood since the bile can no longer go into the intestine. This condition is called jaundice and the skin becomes yellow from the accumulated bile in the blood.

Cancers of the bile duct are rare in the Western world. There are approximately 600 people diagnosed with cholangiocarcinomas each year in the UK. The bile ducts are the tubes connecting the liver and gall bladder to the small intestine (small bowel). Bile is a fluid made by the liver and stored in the gall bladder. Its main function is to break down fats during their digestion in the small bowel. In people who have had their gall bladder removed, bile flows directly into the small intestine. The bile ducts and gall bladder are known as the biliary system.

A fluid made by the liver to break down fats during digestion. The small ducts come together to form the right and left hepatic bile ducts, which lead out of the liver. The two ducts join outside the liver to become the common hepatic duct. The part of the common hepatic duct that is outside the liver is called the extrahepatic bile duct. The extrahepatic bile duct is joined by a duct from the gallbladder (which stores bile) to form the common bile duct. Bile is released from the gallbladder through the common bile duct into the small intestine when food is being digested.

A blocked bile duct can cause bile to accumulate in your gallbladder, making it larger than normal. Although your gallbladder is hidden behind other organs in your abdomen, your doctor can sometimes feel this enlargement during a physical exam or it may be detected on an ultrasound.

Jaundice (the skin turning yellow) and itching are the most common signs. Jaundice is caused by the accumulation in the skin of a component of bile (bilirubin) that normally empties into the intestines after traveling through the bile ducts.Bloating, weight loss, decreased appetite, fever, nausea or an enlarging abdominal mass are all signs that may be attributable to bile duct cancer. Pain usually signifies advanced disease.

What Shots Are You Not Taking?

"You miss 100 percent of the shots you do not take" – Wayne Gretzky

I know of two things right now that could probably energize my creativity and enrich my pocket book. (1) I have an opportunity to hang a piece in an art show. (2) I painted some birthday gifts for two cousins of mine and they hung them where they work. People have been asking if I make them for sale, so there is a shot of me easily selling some of my work.

Ask me what moves I have made in either direction? Nada. Zilch. Zero. None.

I could tell you how busy I am and how family issues have taken up all my free time. I could whine about my internal conflicts and how hot it is in my studio. What I traditionally do is ruminate long enough that the deadline passes and the decision is made for me. The classic: Decision by Indecision.

• "Taking a shot can be risky."
• "You might miss."
• "You're just wasting time and effort."
• "What will people say?"
• "What if you're criticized?"

The whinny, ambivalent procrastinator in my head wants me to think negative; therefore decision by indecision wins the day.

I bet you have a version of your own internal critic that spews out bad advice. I call mine Blockhead. The internal critic in my head comes directly from the primitive part of my brain that is still worried about surviving in the wilds. Since no saber-tooth tigers are loose in my art studio, Blockhead searches for danger at every turn. Hence, I am counseled to wait, hold back, do not take the shot. I am cautioned that I could get hurt. By hurt, I could be embarrassed, shamed, or criticized.

Blockhead needs to get a life, but I digress.

One good way to know when Blockhead might be in charge and seeking out tigers is to notice how big the emotions are surrounding the risk. It is good to notice that if you are measurably afraid, you may be doing something right!

Here are a few tips to help you take the shot:

• Check out the risks with your support system. A trusted friend can convince you that the tigers are all Blockheads' idea.
.
• Chances are you are not psychic even though your Blockhead wants you to think it knows the outcome before you have ever taken the risk. You will not really know the outcome until you take the action.

• It's none of your business what other people think of you. You can not control what they think anyway, negative or positive.

• Break the risk down into small steps to enlarge your comfort zone.

If you still can not decide to take a risk, try to become willing to be open to the possibilities. I love the saying, "When I become willing to be willing the world is open to me."

You will not know unless you take the shot.

Foods To Eat To Combat Iodine Deficiency

The thyroid gland is one of the most important regulators of metabolism whose functioning affects the entire body. It is in turn regulated by the two master glands of the endocrine system, namely, the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus, both of which are seated in the brain. The thyroid gland produces hormones, known as “thyroid hormones,” from the amino acid tyrosine and from iodine. Since the thyroid gland can affect just about every cell in the body in multifarious ways, proper thyroid function is absolutely essential to overall health.

Iodine deficiency is directly related to thyroid dysfunction which in turn can lead to numerous medical problems. Weight gain and hypersensitivity to cold are common in patients with thyroid disease. Cholesterol levels typically become elevated and increase the risk of serious cardiovascular diseases such as hardening of the arteries and high blood pressure. Water retention in the upper and lower extremities can also develop due to increased capillary permeability and slow lymphatic drainage. Loss of libido and menstrual disregulation are other very common findings. In the case of women, thyroid disease can cause prolonged and heavy menstrual bleeding with a shorter menstrual cycle. Infertility may also be a problem. If pregnancy occurs during thyroid dysfunction, miscarriages, premature deliveries, and stillbirths can occur. Rarely does a pregnancy end in normal labour and delivery if the thyroid gland is not working normally. Recent studies have also linked iodine deficiency to breast cancer in women. Dermatological issues can manifest in both sexes. For example, skin can become dry, rough, and scaly while hair and nails can become brittle and thin. From the psychological and behavioural standpoint, depression, lethargy, and fatigue are usually among the first symptoms of thyroid disease. As the disease progresses, the patient will most certainly have difficulty concentrating and become extremely forgetful. Other body-wide manifestations include shortness of breath, constipation, and impaired kidney function. Finally, the musculoskeletal system will be affected as well and the individual will begin experiencing muscle weakness and stiffness along with joint pain and tenderness.

All of these problems can be averted through proper intake of iodine. However, the dietary allowance for iodine recommended by physicians and medical authorities in Australia is usually quite small at 150 micrograms per day when in fact up to 600 micrograms per day is more in accord with what the body actually needs for a healthy thyroid gland. It is therefore of supreme importance that people be educated about adequate iodine intake as well as the food sources of this essential mineral. Although common table salt is frequently iodized, there are many other food sources of iodine that we should know about. Seaweed, for instance, has long been recognized as an almost perfect source of iodine. The iodine found in seaweed works synergistically with other phytochemicals in seaweed that support healthy metabolism, digestion, and elimination of toxic waste. This type of iodine polytherapy from seaweed also enhances blood flow and helps to maintain healthy glucose levels. Kelp is very similar to seaweed and is a potent source of trace minerals, iodine, and phytochemical constituents that help to maintain gastrointestinal and thyroid health and to support normal metabolic function. Coleus forskholii is an iodine bearing herb that works directly on the heart muscle and on blood vessels to optimize blood flow throughout the cardiovascular system. It also helps to maintain healthy fat metabolism and overall immune health. Ashwagandha, often referred to as “Indian Ginseng,” is a common herb used in Ayurvedic medicine which also works synergistically with the iodine found in the body. It is used to enhance mental and physical stamina and to advance the body’s natural resistance and adaptation to stressful influences.

Spinal Cord Injury

Between 400,000 and 500,000 Americans have a suffered spinal cord injury.

Some spinal cord injuries, like spina bifida and Friedreich’s ataxia, come from inherited conditions. Polio was another significant cause, prior to the discovery of the Salk vaccine.

However, the most likely cause of spinal cord injury is physical trauma. In many cases, severe damage to the spinal cord results from another person’s negligent conduct. If this happened to you or a member of your family, protect your legal rights by consulting an attorney immediately.

Anatomy of a Spinal Cord Injury

The spinal cord, along with the brain, makes up the central nervous system. The spinal cord is the bundle of nerves that runs from the brain down to about the waist. A column of protective bones, known as vertebrae, surrounds this bundle of nerves.

A spinal cord injury is defined as damage to the spinal cord, which causes a loss of function to the body. Frequently, this loss of function is total or partial paralysis and/or a lack of physical sensation.

It is possible to suffer a serious injury, such as a ruptured disc, and not damage the spinal cord. Thus, broken vertebrae in the neck or back (i.e. a broken back) may be less serious than injury to the spinal cord itself.

When a spinal cord injury does occur, the extent of injury often relates directly to the level on the spinal cord where the trauma occurred. Injury to the cervical portion of the cord, the area associated with the neck, often results in quadriplegia, the total paralysis of the arms and legs. If the injury occurs to the mid-section of the spinal column or thoracic region, the result is paraplegia, the paralysis of the lower body. Lower spinal column or lumbar region injury can cause paralysis of the legs or loss of sensation and/or some loss of lower mobility.

Treatment for Spinal Cord Injuries

There still is no cure for spinal cord injuries, although modern research continues to provide hope for future treatments. The most encouraging recent breakthroughs are medications administered shortly after injury, which reduce the spinal cord swelling and lessen the severity of injury. Most of these medications are steroid-based. One of the most common is called methylprednisolone.

Spinal Cord Injury Statistics

  • Approximately 10,000 new spinal cord injuries are reported in the United States every year. Many of these injuries result from the unintentional, but improper, actions of others. In legal terms, this is “negligent conduct.”
  • Young males have a statistically greater chance of sustaining a spinal cord injury. Over 80% of the new traumatic spinal cord injuries in this country happen to males between the ages of 16 and 30.
  • Approximately 36% of traumatic spinal cord injuries resulted from automobile accidents.
  • 21% of traumatic spinal cord injuries are linked to falls.
  • About 29% result from violence, including gunshot wounds.
  • About 85% of spinal cord injury victims who survive the first day after injury are still alive ten years later.

The Financial Impact of Injuries

The cost of a serious injury can be catastrophic. This is an extreme hardship when the injuries make work impossible and rent, gas, and medical bills start to accumulate. Our law firm will help you recover these costs from the insurance company or the at-fault party. If you or a loved one suffered a serious accident involving a spinal cord injury, talk with an experienced Michigan personal injury lawyer.

Does Marijuana Work For Chronic Pain Management?

Is medical marijuana superior to prescription analgesics in controlling chronic pain? Chronic pain overall constitutes the single largest usage of medical marijuana. The opioid narcotics that are commonly used to treat chronic pain, like codeine, morphine, oxycodone, and methadone, are potentially addictive. Chronic pain medications may end up leading to tolerance with a need of increasing dosage to maintain effectiveness.

A substantial number of patients find that when treating their chronic pain with medical marijuana, they are able to eliminate or significantly cut down their opiate intake. THC and the other cannabinoids inhibit the acute responses to painful stimuli. They are effective at relieving chronic pain associated with nerve damage and inflammation. There are not any large scale research projects looking at marijuana's pain relieving efficacy. But there are plenty of case reports showing that marijuana works well for peripheral nerve pain such as the phantom limb pain occurring after an amputation.

Marijuana blocks pain pathways in the central nervous system, but through a different neurochemical signaling system than opiates. Therefore opiates and marijuana may act together as complementary analgesic medications since they are acting in two different ways. Cannabiniods in marijuana may act directly on injured tissues by reducing inflammation around damaged nerves. An example of this would be with a patient who has post-laminectomy syndrome. After a compressed nerve is surgically freed up, the result may be impressive pain relief. However, after a few months to a year one may develop scar tissue around the nerve and have persistent leg pain which then has no further surgical answer.

This peripheral neuropathic pain is where it appears that marijuana treatment shines. Peripheral neuropathy from diabetes, HIV, post-surgical scarring, have responded well in case studies to medical marijuana. There is also a neuropathic pain that occurs in MS patients called allodynia which entails significant pain to a normally non-painful stimuli.

Opiates do not have clear indications for neuritis and neuropathy, but marijuana actually has been shown to relieve peripheral neuropathy due to HIV and diabetic neuropathy. THC has been useful for treating phantom pain with amputees, causalgias, neuralgias, and conditions like trigeminal neuralgia.

Medical marijuana has also found success with chronic cancer pain. A study at Univ. of Iowa found oral THC at 5 to 10 mg was as effective as 60mg of Codeine for terminal cancer pain relief.

One question that is obvious – Does marijuana alleviate pain simply because patients no longer care about it? Do the psychoactive effects of marijuana simply shift a patient's attitude about the pain and allow one to "sideline" it? Then the patient may focus on other things. Patients in case studies have stated that while taking opiates for chronic pain it tends to have a depression effect and other side effects such as constipation.

For a patient with debilitating diabetic or chemotherapy induced neuropathy, is it so bad if medical marijuana alleviates pain partially from acting directly on the inflamed and injured nerves and the other part by simply allowing patients the ability to focus on more pleasurable aspects of life?

It's estimated that 20% of Americans are afflicted with migraines. 3/4 of these are women. Back in the 1800's, cannabis was the migraine drug of choice. Many patients say that once the first sign of a migraine attack occurs, such as visual disturbance or ringing in the ears, smoking a joint averts the migraine attack.

White Spots on Tonsils? How to Remove Them

If you’ve looked into the mirror lately and noticed some white spots on your tonsils then you have probably run to the doctor or to a friend to inform them that you have some sort of horrible tonsil disease.

Is it chicken tonsil pox? Tonsil acne perhaps? Maybe it’s a tonsil mosquito bite.

Don’t stress out. It’s not chicken-tonsil pox, nor is it tonsil acne and, unless you have been eating mosquitoes for breakfast, it is not a tonsil mosquito bite.

It most likely is tonsil stones.

Tonsils stones are not life threatening, nor are they that dangerous. They are, however, extremely annoying. This is because those white spots on your tonsils are actually nasty balls of bacteria, mouth debris and old food particles stuck together to form a putrid ball of YUCK!

These stones are not an infection of the tonsils or a throat irritation. They occur simply because food and mouth bacteria form together and get stuck in your tonsil crypts, or your tonsil crevices. Everyone has crevices in their tonsils just like everyone has pores on their face.

While some people have larger pores and are prone to acne, other people have larger tonsil crypts and are prone to these stones.

Luckily there is a way to get rid of these tonsil stones.

These white spots on your tonsils need to know who is the boss – and that’s you. There are several different methods when it comes to removing your these stones. You can try to cough or hack them out.

If you can squeeze your throat together, you may be able to pop them out of place. You can also gargle them out with salt water. Another common method is to scrape them out using a toothpick or a cotton swap. You can also take a syringe to the tonsil stones and spray them out.

Whatever you choose to do to get rid of those white spots, keep in mind that they very smelly when they finally do come out. You will need to wash your hands and mouth after handling them. Try to avoid the urge to pop these little suckers, even though you might want to. You should also keep these white balls away from your nose — they most certainly do not smell like white roses.

So now that you know that you don’t have chicken tonsil pox you can take the appropriate measures kick those white spots on your tonsils to the curb.

Hepatitis Part X – Foods to Avoid

As we mentioned in previous articles, hepatitis is characterized by the destruction of a number of liver cells and the presence of inflammatory cells in the liver tissue caused by excessive alcohol drinking, disorders of the gall bladder or pancreas, medication side effects, and infections. Any foods that contribute to inflammation of liver cells and lowering the strength of immune system should be avoided.

1. Cheeses, fatty snacks and meat
All these foods are high in saturated and trans fats. Not only do they cause cholesterol build up in your arteries but they also increase high blood pressure also damaging the immune system. It also is the main contributor to gallstone formation, fat livers that reduce the normal function of liver and make it vulnerable for virus infection.

2. All processed meats and sausages
All processed meat and sausage contains high amounts of artificial food additives and preservation that is toxic to the body resulting in weakened liver function and making it easy to be infected by the hepatitis virus.

3. Nuts
Do not to eat spoiled or moldy peanuts which contain toxic elements that is associated with the acceleration of hepatoma.

4. Avoid excessive drinking
Alcohol kills liver cells and causes inflammation as well as leading to cirrhosis.

5. Sugar
Since most people with hepatitis B have abnormal blood sugar levels, eating extra sugar causes liver inflammation and free radical damage.

6. Do not overload your body with excess iron because it is toxic to the body.

Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes Risk

Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes risk has become a global epidemic. In the U.S. alone, 21 million adults and children are diabetic, with 250 million affected worldwide.

And of the 250 million diabetics, over 95 percent have type 2 diabetes, which most experts believe is highly preventable through healthy lifestyle and dietary changes.

Diabetes Risk Predictions

In the very near future, it’s predicted that 50 percent of all Americans will become pre-diabetic in their lifetime. In other words, the chances are one out of two that you or someone in your family will be at risk in the future for this debilitating disease.

Even when diabetes doesn’t kill you, it still greatly increases your risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, impotence and sexual dysfunction. Diabetes is also the world’s leading cause of blindness and is responsible annually for over a million amputations.

Each year, this disease causes millions of premature deaths. In fact, every ten seconds someone with diabetes dies from one of the diabetes-related causes.

As you can see, this is a serious disease and should not be taken lightly.

And neither should pre-diabetes, generally referred to as metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome, which is also called syndrome X, is characterized by such early diabetic symptoms as obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar.

Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), for example, increases your risk of heart attack death by up to five times and your risk of death from stroke by as much as 15 times.

Natural Diabetes Prevention

Now for the good news. In most cases, both metabolic syndrome and diabetes are preventable. According to the American Diabetic Association, healthy lifestyle and dietary modifications can prevent as much as 80 percent of type 2 diabetes.

Just 30 minutes a day of moderate exercise and 5 to 10 percent weight loss reduces your risk of diabetes by 58 percent, which is a lot better than the results from medication.

And a 5 to 10 percent weight reduction should be possible for most anyone.

For example, a 150-pound person can lose 15 pounds in a year simply by walking two miles, five days a week, for one half hour. That adds up to a 10 percent weight loss. They can also lose another 15 pounds a year by just giving up one 12-ounce cola a day.

And if both these steps are taken, the person will lose about 30 pounds in a year.

Living a Healthy Diabetes Free Lifestyle

Diabetes – What is Type 1 Diabetes?

Type 1 Diabetes is an auto immune disease that destroys the insulin producing cells of the pancreas. Type 1 Diabetes used to be called juvenile diabetes because it usually struck people under 20. In type 1 diabetes, the beta cells of the pancreas produce little or no insulin, the hormone that allows glucose to enter body cells. Once glucose enters a cell, it is used as fuel.

Type 1 Diabetes is largely inherited.

Without adequate insulin, glucose builds up in the bloodstream instead of going into the cells. The body is unable to use this glucose for energy despite high levels in the bloodstream, leading to increased hunger.

In addition, the high levels of glucose in the blood causes the patient to urinate more, which in turn causes excessive thirst. Within 5 to 10 years after diagnosis, the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas are completely destroyed, and no more insulin is produced making people with type 1 insulin dependent.

Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age, but it usually starts in people younger than 30. Symptoms are usually severe and occur rapidly.

The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is not known. Type 1 diabetes accounts for 3% of all new cases of diabetes each year. There is 1 new case per every 7,000 children per year. New cases are less common among adults older than 20.

The result is Type 1 Diabetics are hungry all the time trying to make up for the shortfall of insulin. Amazingly though since the body cannot process the nutrients weight loss is symptomatic along with extreme thirst and excessive urination. The kidneys try to process the excess glucose to balance things out. Weakness is another symptom.

Liver Detox Benefits With Turmeric

Liver impairment can come about due to poor diet, allergens, pollutants and fatigue. An impaired liver is toxic, congested and sluggish. When that happens its vital functions are impaired. A liver detox has many benefits that can help keep the liver working at its best. Ayurvedic practitioners recommend the use of turmeric for great liver health.

The liver is an amazing organ that has the important role of processing and removing toxins from your bloodstream. It produces over 13,000 different chemicals and 2,000 various enzymes used in the body. In peak condition, it works quickly by filtering up to two litres of blood per minute. Liver enzymes efficiently break apart the structure of toxic molecules to reduce their toxicity. Consequences can be harmful with an impaired liver as it is often likened to be the center of vitamin, mineral, protein, fat, carbohydrate and hormonal metabolism.

A very important function of the liver in removing toxins is to produce bile. Thus, an increased bile flow is beneficial in liver detox. Turmeric helps increase bile flow making it a liver cleanser that could rejuvenate the liver cells and recharges their capability to break down toxins.

Turmeric is known in Ayurvedic medicine as the king of spices. The bitter spice helps cleanse the liver, purify the blood, and promote good digestion and elimination. It possesses powerful anti-inflammatory properties but none of the unpleasant side effects of anti-inflammatory drugs. It has been used for skin cleansing, colour enhancement and food preservation.

The principal chemical component of turmeric is curcumin. In addition to its liver detox use, curcumin has powerful antioxidant action that fights against viral infection, cancer, and arthritis. It stimulates the gallbladder for bile production, and scavenges free radicals. The whole herb turmeric contains lower amounts of curcumin, and is used when healing requires the application of volatile oils.

Curcumin is also helpful as a herbal remedy for the treatment of cirrhosis of the liver. It enhances the liver detox process and speeds up healing. Curcumin also prevents alcohol and other toxins from being converted into compounds that may be harmful to the liver. It can reverse the adverse effects of excessive iron consumption on the liver.

Prior to the use of turmeric for liver detox, you should consult your Ayurvedic practitioner. Turmeric should also not be used in certain cases. Those with congestive heart disease whose cause has not yet been identified or those with painful gallstones, obstructive jaundice, acute bilious colic, or extremely toxic liver disorders, should refrain from using turmeric or curcumin. Also, avoid the use of turmeric over long periods of time to prevent stomach distress.

Obesity – Major Health Problem in United States

Obesity is considered a major health problem in the United States. Obesity has been declared as an epidemic by The Center for Disease Control and Prevention. It is very unfortunate but true that more than 300,000 people die every year due to problems related to obesity. The fact that one out of every three Americans is overweight is highly alarming. The basic reason behind this growing health disorder has been identified as the Americans' inclination to eat to the maximum and exercise to the minimum.

According to endocrinologists, Obesity targets every organ system in the body. Obesity results in number of complicated and acute problems like heart malfunctioning, diabetes, sleep disorders, different types of cancer, arthritis etc. Apart from physical ailments, people suffering from obesity also face some psychological problems like depression, mood swings, appearance consciousness, lack of self-confidence etc.

Unhealthy food habits result in quick weight gain. It is often observed that people casually start consuming snacks as a sporadic tendency but after a period of time it gets converted into a hard-core habit. Junk food taken along with normal food adds a high count of calories to the already existing reserves of the body, which in turn increase the body weight very speedily.

Although number of weight losing programs and packages are available, but the fact is that shedding weight is not as simple as it appears. Discipline coupled with serious efforts and lots of hard work is the key to permanent loss of weight. The simplest way is "Eat minimum, exercise to the maximum". For most people, maintaining the weight is more difficult than losing weight. Inconsistent methods usually take the people to their original obese figures in a few years. Weight reduction programs should be considered as lifetime commitment by the dieters.

Dieters should not expect drastic weight loss in a short span of time as this will only lead to frustration and discouragement. To gain weight is easy but to loose those extra kilos which have piled up over the years is very difficult. Ideal weight can not be attained in a few days or months. This is a gradual process and lots of patience, hard work and discipline and self-control is required. The realistic goal can be achieved only with persistent and sincere efforts.

All the dieters must listen to their stomach as stomach can best indicate when and how much to eat. Most people presume that if it is time to eat then they must eat, even if they do not feel like eating. If a person enjoys heavy dinner and that too at late hours and straightway goes to bed after that, then this adds loads of calories to the body. To fully digest the meal, we should ideally not take any food after nine at night. This would help in avoiding extra burden on the stomach right before sleep time. A balanced exercise routine is also indispensable to loose weight. The doctors recommend brisk walking at least for one hour. 5% -15% decrease in original body weight in a span of 6-10 months is considered as ideal weight reduction.

FDA has approved two medicines Meridia and dopamine, which help in decreasing weight up to 8% in a year. About 200 drugs for weight reduction are under process of research and development. But it is pertinent to add here that these drugs push back the incentive to loose weight through physical workouts and diet control. People presume that they can shun of these extra kilos by consuming pills so exercise or dieting is not required.

Rapidly developing chains of fast food restaurants serve foods that are high in fats and sugar content. Nutrition part is almost neglected. A medium chocolate shake provides nearly 10g of fats, 60 mg cholesterol and around 600 calories. From these figures one can clearly imagine how disastrous can a small chocolate shake be the diet plan of the dieter. More and more people are stepping towards these fast food joints. Due to the craze of fast food among the children and adults, these joints are expanding their branches swiftly.

The definition of 'Salads' which are otherwise considered nutritious has been absolutely distorted by these fast food restaurants. A fiesta salad served at almost all leading food joints provides 27g of fats as it contains cheese, cream, seasoned beef etc. Figures provided by Pizza industry of America state that more than 300 slices of this favorite food are consumed every second. More than 90% of population enjoys pizzas in America that too with high calorie toppings like pepperoni, extra cheese, sausages, chickens and meat etc. Two pizza slices may provide approximately 50-55 mg of cholesterol, 10 g of sugar and more than 500 calories.

Sedentary life-style also plays a pivotal role in making people obese. Due to technological advancements, modern equipments like washing machines, dishwashers, automobiles, elevators, remote controls and other gadgets are being used increasingly as substitutes of physical force and manual labor. Today without much bodily exertion even the most tedious of tasks can be accomplished in a jiffy. Television watching, playing video or computer games encourages inactivity and simultaneously while watching television or playing games people enjoy munching high-calorie snacks for example French fries, chips etc. Result is, dual adverse affect on the body that is – increased high calorie food intake and decreased physical activity. Besides this most people, due to their busy schedule or lack of discipline, can not approach gyms / fitness centers or exercise at home regularly. Children often witness the casual attitude of their parents towards health, and as a result they imitate the same and do not consider exercise as serious affair.

World Health Organization (WHO) recommends regular physical activity for at least thirty minutes per day. It has also given some other recommendations for weight loss like increase in consumption of vegetables, fruits and whole grain, decrease in consumption of free sugar, decrease in salt intake etc.

In order to reduce weight, people tend to consume different kinds of drugs that help in weight reduction but they fail to realize that a number of side effects follow the intake of such drugs. Ideal weight can be attained and maintained without these drugs, just with the help of healthy diet and proper exercise. Slow and maintained weight loss, without any side effect is better than a substantial weight loss with number of side effects.

Drug and Diet Therapy for Gout

In the last few years no new treatments for the well known condition called Gout have been discovered. A therapeutic cure of the disease has not been approved by the medical associations. Though, physicians and patients seem to have access to more information on Gout and also understand better how it can be kept under control. People now know hoe to use the standard agents to improve their condition and even get rid of it.

An acute Gout attack can be well managed by administering three major drugs with action on the purine metabilisation: Colchicines, NSAID and corticosteroids. Any of the treatments have an increased chance of success if started at the very beginning of the acute attack. Corticosteroids are more preferred by physicians as they are safer in patients with other medical conditions, especially those with heart or kidney transplants. Colchicines and NSAIDs showed increased risks in tarred organisms.

Patients with infrequent Gout attacks must be treated as soon as possible as doctors will now expect reoccurrence during the same year in about 50% of the cases. A supported prophylaxis is required in patients with more than 2-3 yearly attacks, in those with clinical tophi, renal calculi or those with higher than 10mg/dl uric acid levels.

In patients not exposed to the mentioned side-effects of NSAIDs and Colchicines, these two drugs may be helpful as well in the prophylaxis. If both products prove their inefficiency and the patient develops gout tophi or kidney stones, an additional agent can be added to the medication. Such a substance might be Allopurinol, Probenecid and Sulfinpyrazone and all lower the seric uric acid level under 7mg/dl. If used during an acute Gout attack, all three drugs may lead to the mobilization of the uric acid crystals and cause major side-effects. The medication must be started after the clinical acute phase.

Asymptomatic obese Gout patients are always advised to loose weight, as a low-purine diet does not seem to be efficient anymore. This occurs thank to the drug therapy with Allopurinol and uricosuric agents that decrease uric acid in the blood. Gout patients are being advised to give up alcohol or reduce it to a minimum. Codeine and Meperidine are rarely as analgesics in controlling acute attacks. Aspirin containing products may prolong the Gout attacks due to the fluctuations in the uric acid level. They should not be administered in Gout patients.

Very rare cases of Gout in pregnant women are known; if they occur, acute attacks can be successfully treated with corticosteroids. Elder patients tend to suffer from kidney failure and other co morbidities and are more susceptive to develop side-effects of NSAIDs and Colchicines in case of long or even short-term treatments. Any use of Allopurinol, Probenecid or Sulfinpyrazone can also trigger severe side-effects.
