How To Get Rid Of Nail Fungus Forever – Natural Remedies

I am sure most of us have sometime in our life suffered of nail fungus. It is a very common affection that normally has no further consequences, other than bad smell in our feet, a change in our nail's color or shape, and sometimes the feeling that our feet are not very comfortable.

Nail fungus is caused by invisible organisms (bacteria or fungi) that live in absence of sunlight and wet conditions. This happens to be the situation that occurs to our feet most of the times. When we wear shoes, boots and socks, our feet spend lots of time in the darkness, and if we have an active life, it is mostly sure that our feet will sweat inside our boots or shoes. This combination of factors exposed above, together with the fact that sometimes we do not wash, clean or dry our feet properly, can lead to the development of nail fungus.

You may have a nail fungal infection if one or more of your nails are:

  • Thickened
  • Brittle, crumbly or ragged
  • Distorted in shape
  • Dull, with no luster or shine
  • A dark color, caused by debris building up under your nail

Infected nails may also separate from the nail bed, a condition called onycholysis. You may even feel pain in your toes or fingertips and detect a slightly foul odor.

Nail fungus can become a painful damage for your nails, and you should ask your doctor if you suffer diabetes, or if you are taking medications that affect your immune system. This would help to avoid further complications. Sometimes, people turn to traditional home made remedies because current treatments can take a long time to work and are not always effective. There are two remedies that have proved to help nail fungus infections: vinegar and Vicks VapoRub.

Vinegar. Right now there's no evidence that a vinegar soak can cure nail fungus, some studies have shown that it can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria.

Experts suggest soaking your feet for 15 to 20 minutes in a mix of 1 part vinegar to 2 parts of warm water. Please be sure to rinse well and dry your feet well when you're done.

VapoRub. Same as with vinegar, there are no verified clinical reports to assess the effectiveness of Vicks VapoRub on nail fungus, but there have been numerous anecdotal reports stating that Vicks VapoRub works.

Cedar Fever What Is It – How Do You Get It – Home Remedies For Cedar Fever

The disease cedar fever is not actually a fever. This disease is a kind of

allergy. The allergic reaction is accompanied by watery and itchy eyes, runny

nose, and sneezing. Most of the time, this also causes itchiness inside the

ears. Cedar fever is caused by the pollen from the commonly known mountain

cedar tree, although this tree is actually juniper (juniperus ashei). This

disease is a seasonal disease. This means that many individuals get this

disease on only certain seasons of the year.

The usual season for cedar fever would be December to January, when the cyclic

pollination of trees occur. The pollens are released by the trees and scattered

by the winds. Once the pollen from the tree is inhaled, it may cause an

undesirable effect on cedar allergic persons.

Many persons are are prone to allergies. The allergic reactions to certain

things are caused by an oversensitive immune system. The oversensitive immune

system leads to an increased (but unnecessary) immune response. The body’s

immune system usually protects itself against harmful chemicals, bacteria and

viruses. The allergic reaction occurs when the immune system reacts to

a stimulant (an allergen) that usually does not do harm most people.

As noted above, cedar fever involves an allergic reaction to pollen. A virtually

identical reaction occurs with allergy to mold, dust, and other allergens that

can be inhaled. Other small particles on the air, especially in polluted air,

can greatly aggravate the disease of cedar fever.

Nutritionists who have a wide experience in providing supplements for people

that get afflicted with cedar fever usually recommend pantothenic acid (a type

of vitamin B), zinc and vitamin C, or even colloidal silver.

There are a couple of natural options to relieve the symptoms of seasonal

allergies. Research has shown that one or more of the vitamins, minerals,

herbs and other supplements may reduce the symptoms of seasonal allergies.

These vitamins and minerals include bromelain, bioflavonoids, calcium,

magnesium and licorice.

Colic and Homeopathy- Relief Is On the Way!

Everyone knows how delightful a new baby can be! New life brings new love, fresh promise for the future, and overwhelming joy. However, that little sweetheart, can also bring other sorts of baggage, such as sleep deprivation for Mom and Dad, disruption of all routines, endless laundry, and the most dreaded of all – colic!

Colic is severe abdominal pain. The infant suffering with colic will usually have abdominal pain, gas, cramping, flatulence, bloating, and irritability accompanied by some very recognizable symptoms that distinguish themselves from normal infant crying. Colic can produce piercing and constant crying lasting for hours, and the infant will exhibit a red face that can become pale or blue around the mouth if the attack is long or severe. In addition, the infant's belly will be hard and distended with legs drawn up and arms clenched tightly. Many times the infant will have coldness in the hands and feet.

The American Academy of Pediatrics estimates that of the four million babies born in the United States each year, about 25% will develop colic. Colic most often affects infants from about two weeks until three months of age, and while doctors and scientists have been trying to find the cause of colic for over 50 years, each study brings another theory, but nothing concrete. We do know, however, that colic can be traumatic for everyone. Mom and Dad, already sleep deprived, now have the added stress of watching their baby in misery.

King Bio Children's Colic Relief (TM) can provide safe, natural relief to the infant within 30 seconds to 10 minutes. If relief is not immediately noticed, the product may be used as frequently as every 10 minutes until the symptoms subside. Remember that with King Bio homeopathic formulas, the dosages range from one spray in the mouth for newborns to three sprays for adults so there is no need to try to calm the baby down long enough to get the medicine in! One spray in that open, squalling mouth usually provides quick, safe relief for most infants suffering from colic.

All King Bio homeopathic formulas have a pure water base. There is no alcohol, sugar, or yeast to be concerned about. For added therapeutic effect, you may use any King Bio natural medicine topically on the affected area. Simply spray King Bio Colic Relief (TM) on your infant's tummy and massage gently in a clock-wise direction to assist in gas expulsion.

In certain circumstances, the infant may need additional King Bio Natural Medicines for relief. It may benefit the parents to consider King Bio for indigestion, motion sickness, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, or food and chemical allergy. Recommended formulas from King Bio include Constitutional Enhancer (TM), Tummy Aches, all our Detox Formulas, Growth and Development (TM), and VaccinoPlexä.

Depression – How to Face It

Do you or a loved on suffer from depression?

Depression can be a crippling mental disorder when ignored or left untreated. Feelings of sadness and other negative feelings affect us all at some point in our lives and desperately need to be addressed in order to get to the root of the problem. The current economic crisis, relationships and poor job suitability are all contributing factors to why people may suffer from depression. Vast amounts of money are spent each year on treating sufferers of depression, treatments range from hospitalization to counselling and prescribed drugs such as anti-depressants. In fact anti-depressants only defer the depression and do not actually cure the disorder, yet millions of people receive prescriptions for anti-depressants each year. Studies have shown that these treatments prove largely ineffective and now mental health professionals are turning to alternative options to solve the age old disorder. On the upside we can rest assured that depressionis not permanent and there is a way out of what often seems like a never ending flood of negative thoughts and emotions on a daily basis.

The answer lies within Cognitive Behavior Therapy concepts and how to use them to overcome, OCD or Anxiety. Cognitive behavior therapy has been used to successfully and permanently relieve people of depression all over the world and attending a clinic is not necessary. The process involves changing mental attitudes towards everyday life, understanding the relationship between your thoughts, behaviour and moods and identifying negative thoughts which cause prolong your depressed state. One of the objectives of Cognitive Behavior Therapy is to identify and monitor thoughts, assumptions, beliefs and behaviors that are related and accompanied to debilitating negative emotions and to identify those which are dysfunctional, inaccurate, or simply unhelpful. This is done in an effort to replace or transcend them with more realistic and self-helping ways. Cognitive Behavior Therapy can help depression sufferers overcome their disorder and lead a normal healthy and happy life. It is essential to understand what causes depression and to be aware of the actions, thoughts and feelings that can trigger it.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy will …
-Help You understand the relationship between your thoughts, behaviours and moods which will feel like a heavy weight has been lifted.
-Teach You behavioral techniques to help increase your activity levels and unleash your untapped energy you already have.
-Teach You cognitive techniques to help identify and challenge the negative thoughts which help to keep your depression ongoing.
-Teach You to measure changes in your symptoms, prepare for obstacles and set goals.
-Help Identify triggers and patterns of your low moods, and to understand that you play an active part in getting yourself out of a low mood and regaining your own happiness.

How to Overcome the Fear of Being Alone

Some people fear being alone because they feel that their isolation will breed loneliness. This is a normal anxiety, especially among teenagers and young people who have not developed a strong sense of personal identity yet, and who thus must rely on others to motivate them and boost their self-esteem. However, with some people the terror of being left by oneself extends far beyond those normal apprehensions. Some people experience deep dread and panic if they are by themselves for even a moment, especially in an unfamiliar place. Rather than fearing loneliness, these people seem to have an irrational terror of unknown forces, a terror that overtakes them the moment companions leave their sight. This is a kind of social phobia. Help is out there, fortunately.

Those Who Fear Being Alone Miss Out On Life

People who suffer from a profound phobia of being by themselves are often forced to lead severely restricted lives. Those who simply fear loneliness, and do not want to spend Saturday night at home, can easily take the subway or bus by themselves, to attend a party. Not so for victims of that social phobia that forbids them from being unaccompanied at any one time.

People with this kind of phobia need to always have others around them. That means their lives are often circumscribed by the schedules of other people. Often, they can not go to work, as it would require them to commute independently; thus, often these people do not have jobs. If you simply can not stand to be unaccompanied for even one minute, it's easy to become a burden on everyone around you. If one member of a married couple is always scared to be alone, his or her partner is forced to spend much of his or her time helping the phobic individual accomplish basic tasks of living.

NLP Can Help

Fortunately, this type of severe social anxiety responds very well to treatment that uses the techniques of NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) and hypnotherapy. The reason that NLP can help is that the kind of deep, instinctive panic described in the previous paragraph is what is known as a "conditioned response" from your unconscious mind.

What is a conditioned response?

A conditioned response is like a set of simple computer program instructions from your unconscious mind. Usually, if your thoughts were to be expressed as a computer program, they'd look like a complex, interconnected web of different "if-then" functions and subroutines. In your ordinary, conscious thoughts, one stimulus can lead to many possible responses. For example, if you saw a hot dog, consciously, you'd have the option of thinking many different things. You could think about how you were hungry, or how the hot dog looks phallic, or how it reminds you of pop art; you could even think of something seemingly unrelated, such as your upcoming trip to Spain.

Unconscious conditioned responses do not work that way. Conditioned responses are like what happened to Pavlov's dogs: the great Russian researcher got the poor hounds to the point where they would salivate whenever they heard a bell ring, automatically. The dogs could not help it. They could only have one reaction in response to the stimulus of the bell.

Phobia Of Isolation

Those who experience a deep, lasting panic when they find themselves unaccompanied are experiencing a simple conditioned response. Their unconscious has somehow been programmed by events in their past to send them into state of panic when others are not around. People who fear being alone can easily be helped with hypnotherapy and NLP.

Sprained ankles are one of the most common and most painful injuries that happen each year. What seems at first a minor annoyance can prove quite debilitative, and of course the first thing we want is to stop the pain NOW.

Swelling and inflammation are the body's defense mechanisms designed to protect an injury, but they also cause a great deal of pain. Most people avoid movement, let alone rehabilitative exercise, as long as pain and swelling are present.

Traditional Treatment Options

>> Oral pain relievers

Most of us will first turn to the medicine cabinet. Acetaminophen is a safe option, while the use of NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen can also help.

>> RICE

RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) is the standard course of treatment for a sprained ankle. It slowly reduces swelling and requires from 4-8 weeks and does not address ANY of the issues related to a sprained ankle. In fact, recent research clearly shows that ice can actually inhibit the healing process and delay it significantly.

In fact, it has been shown in research that 30% of people who get a sprained ankle, still have ankle pain 1 year later! *

A Better Way to Ankle Stop Pain Now

The Fact behind Lap Band Removal

There are several reasons which may result in the removal of a Lap Band which can fall in both the classification of a complication or need/want. In the case of complications one point to remember is that the silicone ring will not last forever and will eventually erode. Although late band erosion is a rare complication should it happen the result would be another procedure in which the Lap-Band will be removed and replaced.

Furthermore, the most common reason for Lap Band removal is because of the need or wants to have it removed. In these cases it is actually determined by a surgeon as to whether the removal will take place. Things that could cause the need or want of removal is for example someone who no longer wants it and is committed to continuing their diets as a means to maintain their weight on their own. It may also be removed in the event that the Lap-Band has failed to assist the patient in their weight loss or even in the event of a pregnancy. Although technically if the patient becomes pregnant the Lap-Band can be adjusted but in some instances this is not possible and therefore complete removal may be necessary.

It is mandatory to speak with your doctor during the consultation to inquire as to what may be needed to be allowed a Lap-Band removal. Also make sure that you completely understand the possible risks and complications associated with the Lap-Band procedure. The procedure should in no way be considered a miracle cure to obesity and just like any other weight loss surgery it is important to be fully committed as there is a chance of regaining all of the lost weight.

There are some mythology out there in which people believe that the Lap-Band is the only reversible weight loss procedure but this is not true. It is possible to reverse a gastric bypass surgery as well. It is also important to note that although the Lap-Band is considered to be minimally invasive and features a smaller chance of death as compared to the gastric bypass procedure, it also has a inferior success rate in comparison.

Pole Dancing and Bruises

Whether you take a class or workout at home via pole dancing there is a common problem many men and women have. At the end of the lesson they have bruises on their legs, arms, and other areas. Usually bruising happens for those who are just starting out learning the exercises and dance moves. This type of exercise is like any other sport really in that the soft parts of the body are not designed to get hit or take a hit.

With most sports you are able to wear protective clothing that will reduce the impacts, but pole dancing is different. In this workout you have leggings and shirts. Wearing protective clothing will get in the way of your flexibility. You will find over time the bruising will reduce because you will get better with the moves. However, there are still a few things you can do to eliminate some of the bruising.

A bruise forms because your skin and blood vessels are sensitive. Some women tend to have more of an issue with this area of pole dancing than others. Anaemia or low iron in the blood tends to cause more bruises on a person. By eating a healthy diet you can eliminate the unsightly issue.

You can also condition your body better for the workout before you begin classes. For example, gain better upper body strength by doing push ups and pull ups. If you are already investing in a pole, you can invest in a pull up bar to install in your home. As you strengthen your arms and shoulders you will have a better grip, thus cutting down on the jarring impacts you have on the pole.

Another part of conditioning is toughing up the skin. It is like martial arts in that respect. In martial arts your arms and legs will make impact with another human being. Initially it will cause discolouration of the skin, but over time as the skin becomes harder and the muscle hardens you will have a thicker skin for the impacts.

Any time you learn a new move study it closely. See how the professional is using the positions to avoid impact. You can also walk through the move in pole dancing by practising on the ground before you try it on the pole. If you can get the positions you need before trying it out with your apparatus you'll find you can avoid most impacts.

Osteopathy and Skiing Injuries

One of the primary reasons that my wife and I relocated to Vancouver was to increase our time in the mountains in the winter. I have been a keen skier since the age of 14 and Caroline my wife has skied since we got married in 2003 when she was given the ultimatum that once we were married we’d be going on a ski trip every year whether she liked it or not. Fortunately she taken to it and is now pushing me to my limits. In Jackson Hole 2007 she tired out several ski instructors over the course of our holiday and came to be known as the ‘energizer bunny’ in the Alpenhof bar. We both enjoy alpine skiing and are developing a love for the back country.

As a skier I have benefitted from osteopathy as it has helped me to recover from a variety of injuries that I have sustained over the years. Osteopathy has also helped me to get fitter prior to my skiing holidays as osteopathic manual therapy has helped to free up restrictions in tight muscles and stiff joints. As an osteopathic practitioner I’m always a popular person to have on a trip and have carried out informal osteopathic consultations in bars, hotels and restaurants from the Powder Keg in Ohakune New Zealand, le rond point Meribel France to Jimmyz in Aspen!

Alpine Ski Injuries

The most common skiing injuries affect the knee joint and these usually involve the medial collateral ligament which stabilises the medial border of the knee, the anterior cruciate ligament or the cartilage. Most ski injuries to the knee are ligamentous and they usually occur when we fall backwards in a twisting motion.

Most of us will also sustain a number of bumps and bruises over the course of our trip as we fall and injure ourselves.

Shoulder injuries are also common and usually result from a fall onto an outstretched hand, directly onto the shoulder or an arm being dragged behind as we slide down the slope following a crash. One of the most common shoulder injuries and perhaps the most painful is a dislocated shoulder (believe me it’s no fun as I found out on a CAT skiing day in Aspen 2006), followed by acromio-clavicular subluxations, and fractures to the humerus or clavicle. Thumbs are also commonly injured when our ski poles fail to release when we fall.

Head injuries can also occur when we fall from mild bumps to concussions, to more serious life threatening injuries depending on the speed of the accident, the object hit and area of the skull damaged.

Any injury sustained on the mountain should be examined by a medical professional as soon as possible to exclude the possibility of serious injury. An anterior cruciate ligament injury for example will usually require surgical repair if a skier wishes to return to a high level of activity. With head injuries where there has been a possible loss of consciousness a patient should be monitored for any signs of brain injury and is definitely advised to forgo any alcohol that evening.

With sprains and strains, knocks and bumps I recommend Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, icing, compression, elevation and rest (NICER). It’s also probably best to avoid a relaxing soak in the hot tub as this may increase the inflammation.

Osteopathy and Knee Injuries

Once an injury has been diagnosed osteopathy can be an appropriate therapy to help with a successful recovery. Osteopathy can help knee injuries such as medial collateral ligament strains and cartilage injuries by localised soft tissue treatments to the knee joint and by improving the compensatory mechanisms of surrounding joints such as the foot, ankle and hip to take away strain from the injured joint. As an osteopathic practitioner I can also advise on appropriate strengthening and stretching exercises for surrounding tissues.

Prior to a trip osteopathy can be beneficial to improve the function of surrounding musculature of the knee such as the hamstrings and quadriceps. Deep soft tissue techniques can also help to breakdown scar tissue in old injuries to the lower extremity.

Osteopathy and Shoulder Injuries

Most shoulder injuries require the arm to be supported in a sling for a period of time. This can lead to a joint becoming stiff and restricted. Osteopathic mobilization can help to prevent further injury and joint restrictions. For example when a shoulder dislocates there is often serious derangement of the rotator cuff muscles surrounding the joint leading to instability, deep soft tissue techniques can help to restore function along with specific strengthening exercises.

Osteopathy and Head Injuries

Following a head injury we can often sustain whiplash type injuries to the cervical and thoracic spine which can lead to pain and discomfort for a long time after the injury if they are not treated rapidly. Osteopathic treatment can help to reduce tension and restriction into the musculature of the cervical and thoracic spine using gentle soft tissue techniques. Osteopathy can improve the range of movement and mobility of restricted joints using manipulation and articulation. Osteopathy can also help to relieve headaches that can be associated with head injuries.

As an osteopathic practitioner I would always recommend that you wear a helmet when you ski as this may reduce the risk of head injury. Anecdotal evidence would seem to suggest that this would be the case and I would recommend reading about Sam Bass in the October 2008 issue of Skiing Magazine if you’re not sure.

In conclusion I sincerely hope not to see you as a result of a skiing injury (it’s much nicer to chat about what a great day that you’re having on a lift) but should you sustain an injury osteopathy is a safe, effective treatment that will help get you back on the hill or prepare you for your next trip. How You Can Care For Dogs With Food Poisoning

Dogs make good pets – but they can be challenging to hold back at certain times. In fact they are a little bit like kids. You turn your back for just one bit and they are pouncing on food that is sitting out and imploring for them to take it. Alas not all human solid food is non-poisonous for dogs. There are numerous other varieties that can poison your dog.

Avocado

The leaves, seeds, and fruit from the avocado are made up of a toxic substance identified as Persin. Most of this type of food that you purchase from the stores can contain this detrimental toxin that can poison your dog. However, if you are buying the dog food from a well known company that carries avocado it might be sound.

Fish

Fish might look flavorful to pups – but it is something that they need to stay away from. Salmon poisoning can take place in dogs when they eat any type of fish raw.

Caffeine

When a dog consumes caffeine they will have tremors, seizures, and heart arrhythmia. You need to call your emergency veterinarian as soon as possible if you saw the dog consume it. The symptoms can range from moderate to intense. When they are severe your vet will induce vomiting to take it out of their system.

Chocolate

Chocolate looks wonderful for anyone and anything – but for dogs it can be toxic. Mild symptoms in dogs that take chocolate is vomiting and diarrhea. Severe cases can lead to vomiting and heart arrhythmias. Most of the time these dog poisoning symptoms will depend on how big or little the dog is. The worst type of chocolate for them to take in is unsweetened chocolate. Call your vet straightaway if they have eaten any.

Alcohol Poisoning

In the films we see people giving brandy, beer, or other alcoholic drinks to their dogs – but this is a very bad idea. The symptoms of this dog poisoning include weakness, staggering, and depression.

Protein and Menopause Symptoms

Menopause is not a medical condition or a disease, but it can feel like it at times. Simply put, it is end of the menstrual cycle, marking the end of the child bearing years for a woman. The average age for most women in America is between 45 and 53; however there is a wide variation in the ages and the timing.

Menopause before the age of 40 is deemed premature and should be investigated for the reason. Most naturally occurring menopause is not a sudden thing but may take many years to start and end instead. It typically takes at least a year to be complete during which the woman may have occasional, light periods, or on the other side of the spectrum, heavy bleeding that can potentially cause anemia. Menopause is said to be complete after an entire twelve months have passed without any menstruation at all. After this year has passed, any bleeding or bloody discharge should be promptly investigated to rule out fibroids, polyps, lesions or possible cancer.

There are no set patterns for menopause symptoms – some women get all of the classic symptoms, some women get a few for a day or so and then are not bothered any more. Some symptoms of menopause can be more problematic than others, while some can actually lead to more serious problems. Some of the most common symptoms of menopause:

– Hot flashes (the most common symptom)

– Vaginal atrophy (thinning of the vaginal walls, loss of elasticity and dryness which can lead to painful sex and susceptibility to infections

– Increased risk of osteoporosis

For most women (60-80%) only minor symptoms are noted. Occasionally the symptoms, especially the hot flashes, become more serious and can even be incapacitating. It is important that the menopausal woman keep up with all of the required health exams including breast examination, pap smears and others. (An annual eye exam is also suggested to screen for glaucoma which becomes more problematic after the age of forty).

Why Diet is Important after Menopause

After menopause, the hormones are changed and flipped around. Estrogen, the hormone responsible for ovulation and the menstrual cycle, declines with menopause, leaving the woman with more of the male hormones instead. Both men and women tend to put on some weight, typically around their middle sections after they reach the age of about forty or so, regardless of diet, even with no change in intake or activity level. This weight may start to creep up on the middle aged person, the so called middle aged drift. Keeping the weight under control can help the menopausal woman stay healthier and more active; giving her better benefits (Staying active can lessen the risk of osteoporosis).

Every day, four thousand women enter menopause and because women are living longer than ever before, will spend about a third of their life post-menopausal. There are medications that can be taken, including replacement hormone therapy but there are drawbacks to them. There are herbal products that can be used to combat some of the symptoms but these can be dangerous and may even interact with prescription medications. Using dietary changes can ease symptoms, and can also help to keep the extra weight from piling on.

Soy Protein and Menopause

Soy based proteins have phytoestrogens which act like human based estrogens without some of the risk factors that estrogen replacement therapy can have. Some of the benefits of soy proteins:

– Reduction of hot flashes (in up to 45% cases)

– Decrease the feeling of vaginal dryness and the subsequent risks

– Decrease the bone loss

– An improved cholesterol profile. (soy protein can reduce the cholesterol level by nine points)

– Decreased risk of cancer

– Decreased risk of developing diabetes and better control of existing diabetes

– Decreased risk for kidney and gallstones

– Better control of the blood pressure

Miso and Breast Cancer

Miso is a fermented, soy bean paste which has been shown to decrease breast cancer in Japanese women. In addition, the women who consumed the most miso soup were typically free from menopausal symptoms in four to twelve weeks. According to research that was done by Japan’s National Cancer Center, those women who consumed three bowls of miso soup every day were at a 40% lower risk for developing breast cancer, while those who just had two bowls of the soup every day had a 26% reduction in breast cancer risk.

Additional Protein Sources

In addition to soy, which is the only plant based protein that contains all eight essential amino acids, making it complete, all other plant based proteins, (seeds, nuts, grains and beans) lack one or more of the essential amino acids and should be eaten in combinations that can allow for the full range of amino acids to be part of the diet.

Animal based protein on the other hand is complete and includes meats, dairy foods and eggs. Eggs are considered to be the perfect protein because all grams of protein in the egg are absorbed and digested by the body. Low fat dairy can be a beneficial way to get protein, however for those who are at increased risk for osteoporosis should be wary of skim milk’s phosphorous content which is potentially more problematic.

Protein supplements, which include soy, whey, egg and rice protein, can be used as a meal replacement or as a between-meal snack. There are additional protein supplements as well which include protein bars and protein liquid supplements.

Protein Bars – Protein bars should have enough protein to qualify as a mini-meal but should not have extra sugar which lowers the nutritional benefit. Look for a bar that has at least ten grams of protein per serving but no more than five grams of sugar. Make sure that the calorie count will fit into your actual diet plan.

Future Benefits of Protein

Research by the Ohio State University has shown that a particular protein (excitary amino acid transporter 2, EAAT2) may decrease bloating and the accompanying abdominal discomforts that it can produce. The protein does not affect the bloating itself, merely the brain’s perception of the pain that it feels. The study has been done with mice only so far, but may soon be performed on humans in hopes of using it to treat menopausal bloating as well as other gastrointestinal disorders.
