Medial Collateral Ligament Injuries of the Knee

The MCL is a fibrous band of tissue made up of collagen fibers that runs along the inner aspect of the knee from the end of the thigh bone (femur) to the top of the shin bone (tibia). In this location, the MCL provides “side-to-side” stability to the knee and prevents widening of the inner aspect of the joint with forces applied to the outside of aspect of the knee (valgus force). When significant forces are applied to the outside aspect of the knee, as can occur during a tackle in football or awkward slide into base with baseball, the ligament can be stretched (“sprained”) or torn.

The MCL is made up of a superficial and a deep layer. The superficial MCL runs from the distal femur to the tibia 4 or 5 centimeters below the knee joint line, and is found just below the sheath of the sartorius muscle tendon. The deeper MCL layer lies just outside of the knee capsule and inserts directly into the tibial plateau and medial meniscus. The superficial layers is much more mechanically important in resisting forces to the outside aspect of the knee (“valgus” force).

How is the MCL injured in athletes?

Because the MCL resists widening of the inside of the knee joint, the MCL is usually injured indirectly by traumatic forces in the outside of the knee. These are certainly common in contact sports from tackles or “clipping injuries” in football and soccer. However, MCL injuries can also occur from noncontact mechanisms such as awkward landing or pivoting events in basketball or slides into base with baseball. MCL sprains or tears can occur in isolation or in combination with injury to the meniscus, cartilage, or cruciate ligaments.

What are the signs of a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury in athletes?

The most common symptom following a MCL injury is pain directly over the medial aspect of the knee. The MCL can be tender to palpation over its attachment to the thighbone (femur) proximally, at its mid-substance, or distally over the shin bone (tibia) depending on the location of injury. The pain may also be reproduced by stressing the knee with a force applied to the outside aspect of the knee (“valgus force”), attempting to widen the inner aspect of the joint and stress the MCL. While a valgus force is applied, the inner aspect of the joint line can be palpated – widening that is 5 to 10mm greater than the normal, uninjured knee is significant for MCL injury. Swelling over the torn ligament may appear, and bruising or general swelling of the joint is not uncommon. In more severe injuries, patients may complain that the knee is unstable and feel as though their knee may ‘give out’ or buckle.

Based on physical examination, MCL injuries are graded in severity on a scale of I to III.

Grade I injuries are incomplete tears of the MCL. The ligament is still intact but stretched, and the symptoms are mild. Patients usually complain of pain with palpation of the MCL.

Grade II MCL tears are partial or incomplete tears of the MCL. There is significant pain with valgus stress of the knee and palpation along the medial aspect on the knee over the ligament. Athletes with these tears often complain of knee pain or instability when attempting to cut or pivot.

Grade III tears are complete tears of the MCL. These athletes have significant pain along the medial aspect of the knee. Even deep bending of the knee is uncomfortable. These tears often occur in combination with other injuries in the knee, and complaints of “giving out” or instability with walking, running, or pivoting is common. A knee brace or a knee immobilizer is usually needed for comfort.

How are MCL injuries in athletes treated?

Treatment of an isolated MCL injury in an athlete rarely requires surgical intervention. Usually rest and anti-inflammatory medications followed by rehabilitation will allow patients to resume their previous level of activity. All MCL injuries, however, are not created equal. Therefore, the time for an athlete to return-to-play is highly variable and dependent on the severity of the injury.

Grade I injuries usually resolve without complication. They are typically managed with rest, ice, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications until the knee is pain-free to examination or routine activities. Most athletes with a grade I MCL tear will be able to return to their sport within 1-2 weeks following their injury.

When a grade II MCL sprain occurs, a hinged knee brace is commonly used to protect the knee from valgus forces. Nonoperative treatment also ensues with icing, nonsteroidal medications, and controlled rehabilitation. Athletes with a grade II injury can return to activity once they are not having pain to palpation or stressing of the MCL with a valgus force. Athletes can often return to sports within 3-4 weeks after their injury, but may remain in a protective hinged brace with contact sports.

When a grade III injury occurs, the pain usually significant in the acute post-injury period. Athletes usually require a hinged brace locked in extension and crutches to protect against weightbearing for 1 to 2 weeks. As the pain resolves, the brace can be unlocked to allow range-of-motion as tolerated. Gradual weightbearing can be initiated as well. Once the athlete can comfortably flex the knee to 100 degrees, elliptical and stationary bicycle riding can begin. Light running can begin once the athlete has regained their quadriceps strength compared to the opposite side, and sporting activity can follow as long as the athlete remains pain-free. Rib Pain During Pregnancy

Rib pain during pregnancy can be a persistent problem, especially during the third trimester.  Your rib cage may feel mildly sore or extremely tender and bruised.    You may have discomfort on either side, or both sides, though it is commonly worse on the right side of the ribs.

Pain occurs in and under the ribs as your uterus grows.  Later in pregnancy, your abdomen becomes stretched, and your uterus stretches upward as well as outward.  Your pelvis and abdomen are becoming full, and your baby is beginning to press up under your ribs and chest.  This upward pressure from your baby may also make you feel short of breath. 

This pressure on your ribs and diaphragm may also result in shoulder pain, because there are nerves in the diaphragm which can refer pain into the shoulders.  This pain can be very sharp!  It may also result in indigestion or acid reflux as your baby puts the squeeze on your stomach.

Additionally, as your breast become larger, they also place pressure on your ribs.  During pregnancy, your breasts may increase by one full cup size or more.  The extra weight pulls your shoulders forward and down, and places strain on the upper back, neck, and often results in pain around the rib cage.

As your body prepares for the delivery of your baby, your hormones are hard at work loosening your muscles and ligaments.  This loosening can allow your ribs to shift and move in ways that were not natural before, causing discomfort.  Your ribcage is not only loosening, but expanding as well, not only to make room for your baby, but also to help increase your breathing and lung capacity.  Even though you  may be feeling short of breath, your body is taking in about forty percent more air than it did before you became pregnant.

Try to wear loose clothing so that you do not add any extra pressure to your belly.  Try getting a new bra.  It is especially important to have a supportive bra that is not too tight.  Under wire bras may put too much extra pressure on your ribs.  Now may be a good time to invest in a good nursing bra.  They usually offer nice support without being too tight and will be useful once your baby is born.

Holding your arms up over your head can take some pressure off and provide temporary relief from rib pain by lifting the ribs away from the uterus.

Practicing doorway chest stretches can also be helpful because they, too, will help rotate the shoulders up and back, which can also help lift the ribs away from the uterus.

Stretching and prenatal yoga are great for keeping your body long and loose.  The less compressed you are, the less your rib cage will hurt.  Breathing and relaxation exercises may also be effective.  There are a variety of hands on techniques that can help to gently stretch and lift your ribs away from the uterus.  Applying these techniques to your breasts, chest and abdomen, can really relieve a lot of pain and pressure from your body, though you will need a friend or partner to help you.

Digestive Enzymes and Pre-digestion, Why are They the Key to Good Health?

This is the second article in a five part series devoted to digestion where we have been following a nutritionally poor meal, typical of America, from the mouth to the esophagus to the stomach. We have seen that the food enters the mouth where enzymes are added via sublingual glands. The meal then moves through the esophagus where it is warmed, and then to the stomach where pre-digestion takes place. We will follow this nutritionally poor meal into the stomach.

Food is chewed in the mouth and saliva is mixed with this food. Saliva is made up of an alkaline electrolyte solution that moistens the food, mucus that serves as a lubricant, amylase, an enzyme that initiates the digestion of starch, lipase, an enzyme that begins the digestion of fat, and protease, which digests protein. Most carbohydrates are broken down by the process of chewing the food and mixing it with enzymes. Hopefully that food had viable enzymes to mix with the enzymes supplied by the mouth.

Pre-digestion in the Stomach

Here is where the food that Americans typically eat leads us directly to disease. By eating mostly refined cooked foods with meat we let our body down. It is like a very good friend of yours is lying in front of you dying of thirst and you hand him a glass of salt water. It is water but it will gradually kill him.

Below I am going to trace the food’s path as it moves into the stomach, and see what happens to it and how it is treated by the stomach and the rest of the digestive system. This is information that few Americans know about. When I received this information my mind was shocked and I immediately changed my style of eating completely and for life. So please read and I pray that this powerful truth changes your life as it did mine. After swallowing the food, it moves down the esophagus, which is 18 to 24 inches long. The esophagus moves through the warm core of the body and is responsible for warming the food to close to body temperature, which is ideally 98.6. This is very important as enzymes digest food best at between 94 and 104 degrees. So, if the ideal situation exists in the esophagus (ice water is not added to the food) the food is warmed to somewhere between 96 and 98 degrees before it enters the stomach.

This food enters the stomach through the cardiac sphincter, which is where the esophagus and the stomach meet. An empty stomach is like a flattened balloon until food enters it. As the food enters the upper part of the stomach, it stretches and enlarges to accommodate the food. In fact, the stomach will enlarge beyond the size of the meal until it is fully inflated. While the stomach is inflating to its full size which takes somewhere between 40 to 60 minutes, pre-digestion takes place. Pre-digestion, is the food sitting in the stomach being digested by the enzymes that came with it. The ideal ph here is about seven, very alkaline. This pre-digestion is considered by many nutritionists to be the most important stage of digestion. This is where the enzymes from our food and mouth digest and prepare the food for absorption.

What are Enzymes?

Before we go any further I would like you to understand why enzymes are so important. The answer to this question is crucial to you understandingyour health. Understand this and you understand why the type of food you eat and the way it is handled is so important. Your energy, strength, immune system and all the systems of your body right down to each individual cell depend completely on enzymes. Without enzymes nothing happens in your body, or if it does it could take years to take place; essentially you are dead.

The enzymes we use are both produced by cells in our body and also brought in with food made by other living cells. These enzymes are proteins produced in living cells that affect chemical reactions. An example of this is a banana sitting in a bowl. After a few days, you notice the skin turning brown. That is the enzymes in the banana acting as a catalyst and causing a chemical reaction which releases energy.

Without these reactions caused by the enzymes the food you eat will not be turned into energy or supplies for the body. Here are just some of the other functions of enzymes in the body. All our vitamins, trace elements and minerals are dissolved down to molecular level by enzymes. Only at that level can they and our food be absorbed by our body. They also control digestion, cell growth, and wound healing plus the phagocytes of the immune system use enzymes to cope with pathogens.

Once the stomach completes the pre-digestive process, the food then undergoes chemical and mechanical digestion. Here in the lower part of the stomach, peristaltic contractions (mechanical digestion) churn the bolus, which mixes with strong digestive juices. These juices include powerful hydrochloric acid, which helps break down the bolus into a liquid called chyme. In addition, enzymes called pepsin and cathepsin are added to the juice in the stomach to break down most of the protein in the food. This process can take several hours depending on the meal eaten. The ideal ph here is about three, very acidic.

The hydrochloric acid has three purposes. The first is to break down mineral bonds from our diet. Now when they pass through our intestines they are small enough to pass through the wall to be used by the body. Second, to clean the food of pathogens by creating an acidic environment that destroys the pathogens. Third, change pepsinogen into pepsin, which breaks down the long protein strings that are the essential and non-essential amino acids in the food. These are broken down by pepsin into polypeptides, peptides and tri-peptides so they can be utilized by our body.

Once the food is broken down, it has the consistency of cake batter. This is called chyme and is released into the duodenum by the pyloric sphincter. If this chyme is properly prepared at the stomach your health is good and you never get sick. Diabetes – Treating a Worldwide Pandemic with Hypnosis Therapy

The incidence of diabetes, once a rare and obscure disease, has skyrocketed in the last twenty years and now afflicts tens of millions of Americans. While at one time experts attributed this increase to the increasing age of the American population, doctors are discovering that the disease is afflicting more and more children and young adults. And it is increasing exponentially in the rest of the world as it continues to emulate the lifestyle of the US. Diagnoses of diabetes are expanding worldwide at the phenomenal rate of a 50% increase every decade. Ironically, most physicians today already have a very good idea of ​​those elements of the American lifestyle which create this epidemic. In a nutshell: refined sugars and carbohydrates and a sedentary lifestyle have been scientifically linked to this disease for years. In this article I will point out how these two factors lead to the disease. In the second I will describe some radical new methods that hypnotherapy can offer to help find the solution as an adjunct to medical treatment.

The facts of this disease are well known. In type One diabetes, often starting in youth, the body's immune system, for reasons no one understands, simply destroys the islets within the pancreas that produce insulin, the hormone that helps all body cells to take in the primary food for cell energy, sugar . In type Two diabetes, the insulin produced by the pancreas may be reduced, but this is compounded by the cells of the body developing a resistance to this insulin, unable to accept the sugar that each molecule of insulin is trying to deliver. In both cases the cells of the body are starved of energy. But the accumulation of sugar in the blood is usually the most dangerous effect of diabetes, and the definitive diagnostic indicator of the disease. This excess sugar thickens the blood, and thus slowly breaks down the entire circulatory system. Even when blood sugar is controlled with insulin, this breakdown of the circulatory system seems to be an inevitable consequence of the disease process. Some of the many results of this breakdown include erectile dysfunction, heart disease, and stroke, amputation of the extremities, kidney failure, and blindness.

In my previous analyses of various endemic diseases I explored how the function of a particular organ in a healthy body gives clues to the cause of an illness within that body part. We discovered for example that the epidemic of breast cancer is connected to the failure of modern society to support the role of nursing in a woman's life. The role of the pancreas is clearly about bringing sweetness into our bodies, helping us enjoy the energy of sugar. So we might guess that diabetes is a result of not enough sweetness in our lives. On the surface that analysis may seem counterintuitive, even wrong. After all, most people with diabetes are not short of sugar in their lives, indeed they are entirely too fond of sugary foods. In order to understand the real purpose of the Islets within the pancreas that produce insulin, we must examine the role of this critical organ in early human evolution:

Humans evolved as an upright walking ape at least three million years ago. As the world's first upright primate, we were designed to walk and run many hours every day on long foraging journeys, digging up roots, climbing fruit trees, fighting off saber-toothed tigers, and carrying children. Humans have lived on vast African savannas, dense northern forests, and even on the icy tundra of ice age Europe. But rarely have we as a species enjoyed the sedentary lifestyle of a lion or the comfortable grazing of a cow. The Islets of our pancreas were designed to give us that lasting and sustainable energy that makes us upright apes uniquely active. Through the power of insulin based sugar metabolism, a small amount of sweet food could be stretched out to last for days of chasing game on the ancient savannas, or keeping warm in an arctic storm. With the help of insulin, some of the sugar could be allowed into the cell walls, while the rest was stored in the liver for later use. It was a great system for primitive humans!

But things are different now with the lifestyle Americans practice and which we are exporting to an eager world. We are eating huge quantities of food, including large amounts of refined sugar and carbohydrates like white flour which were entirely unknown to our ancestors. And even as our minds can travel into the infinite and captivating universe of television and the internet, our bodies are sinking into a sedentary pile that is the veritable symbol of modern domestic bliss: the couch potato. So while our blood stream is filled with the fuel of activity, our muscles have become so lazy they are no longer able to eat it! And this sedentary life finally causes our pancreas to give up. Perhaps we can imagine the energy plant operator that is in the islets of our pancreas just throwing up its hands in despair with the cry "I can not manage this any more. I quit!" We can also imagine the bored cells of our body's organs and muscles looking at the rich sugary broth in which they float, and saying, "I do not care for any. I'm bored."

An interesting research result bears out my theory. Doctors have found that the children of primitive hunters and farmers from the third world, whose pancreases are especially tuned to survival in the lean hardworking lifestyle of that world, are more prone than the rest of us to diabetes, when they adopt a western lifestyle. It seems their pancreases need more time to adjust than those of the rest of modern Americans, whose ancestors have had over a century to adapt to these new conditions. Keep in mind however, that diabetes is a growing epidemic even in white society, as we descend deeper every year into a culture of conspicuous consumption and sedentary entertainments.

So, how does hypnosis therapy help us solve this increasingly dangerous epidemic? First let me make clear that hypnosis can not wave a magic wand to heal diabetes with some simple script or cute technique. Patients should continue to monitor their blood sugar and take their insulin according to their doctor's advice, until their blood sugar tests normal for days in a row without injecting insulin. This is the way some of my clients have conquered diabetes. Medical advice should continue to be sought out well into recovery. Avoiding most processed sugars should also be a lifelong goal of all diabetics in my opinion even after their symptoms are in remission. But with those provisos in mind there is much that hypnosis therapy can do to help these problems.

Part 2: The Treatments

In the first article in this series, I explored the rising epidemic of diabetes in our society, its terrible costs for our health, and some of its likely causes. In this article I will explore some of the ways hypnosis therapy can be used, in conjunction with appropriate medical treatment, to assist in healing this illness.

First we can enter the room of the pancreas and see what is there. What emotions have been stored there? What core beliefs from our childhoods tell us to give up this function? What traumatic memories are stored in this organ? Neither I nor my client can answer these questions. But with the help of a skilled hypnotherapist, the subconscious mind can give us these answers. I saw a young woman with type one diabetes, in which her body had destroyed her pancreatic islets. Entering her pancreas in hypnosis she discovered a memory of brutal abuse from her father against her mother. She begged him to stop abusing her mother, screaming at one point: "I'll give up all the sweetness in my life if only you'll stop hurting her." She then burst into tears. Minutes later I pointed out to her the enormous significance of this statement to her disease process.

Shocked at first, she was soon ready to change this core belief. To do this, I directed her to confront her father, rescue her mother, and angrily kick this monster out of her life. She then welcomed into her child's life a new inner father (who was in fact the new man her father had become when he entered AA and recovery!). His promise to her: "I will give you back all the sweetness that you deserve from a father, my dearest daughter." The results of this one session were immediate. Over the next week she reported a more balanced blood sugar and reduced need for insulin in spite of some difficult challenges in her work life.

Somatic healing techniques can also be useful, after we have resolved some of these core beliefs and feelings. These are outlined in my article Somatic Healing. As one example, one client suffering diabetes experienced her inner healer, who was Jesus, operating on her pancreas islets, turning each islet from a bare rocky island to a beautiful tropical paradise with palm trees, flowers, brightly colored birds, and green grasses in abundance. For a week afterwards she tested her blood sugar levels without needing a shot of insulin. Then with her doctor's confused blessing she put away her needles and has been symptom free for five years. Yes, that's exciting. But she did a lot of other healings at my training first to prepare her body for this miracle.

Hypnosis therapy is also valuable in helping to change our sedentary lifestyle and lazy eating habits. Many hypnotic suggestion scripts can be used effectively to alter both our attitudes toward exercise and eating, and our practice of new behaviors in these critical areas of our lifestyle. Natural Remedies For Candida – Essential Oils

Essential oils are excellent natural remedies for Candida.

These oils are the essence, in liquid form, of plants, shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. For pure, effective essential oils, a great deal of the original source must be used to generate a very small amount of oil. For instance, 6,000 pounds of the Melissa plant produce one pound of Melissa oil, and 5,000 pounds of rose petals produce only one pound of rose oil. This means that the oils are very expensive. However, only a few drops are needed for a therapeutic effect. It is important to note that if essential oils are diluted to reduce the expense, then they are not as effective.

Studies of essential oils show that these oils may help create an environment in which fungus, harmful bacteria, virus, and disease can not live. This is good news for the yeast infection sufferer. Essential oils contain oxygenating molecules, which transport the nutrients to the cells of the body. Without oxygen, nutrients can not be assimilated, leaving the body nutritionally depleted. Treatment and Cause of Ganglion Cyst

It is a single or multi-chambered soft tissue mass with thin walls that is filled with high-protein fluid. The fluid color ranges from amber to clear and located beneath the skin and can be attached to muscle tendons, joint capsules or nerves.

What are is the causes? The causes of these cysts are still unknown. However, it is suggested that they are caused by repetitive trauma or joint fluid projecting out of its contained area. In the case of repetitive trauma, the cysts may form if there is friction or excessive rubbing between a bone and/or shoe against a tendon.

What are the symptoms? These cysts can be found all over body. Most commonly, on the hand and wrist, then followed by the foot. In the case of the foot, ganglion cysts are the most common soft tissue masses found in the foot and ankle; in addition most are located on top of the foot. When a ganglion cyst becomes large, it may appear frightening and worrisome because patients may believe they have developed a cancerous growth. Fortunately, ganglion cysts tend to be harmless and painless and may even resolve on it’s own. However, if the ganglion cysts become large enough, it can begin to cause pain. This is because the enlargement produces increased pressure on the surrounding tissues such as skin and nerve. Additionally, large cysts can interfere with shoe gear.

How to diagnose? These soft tissue masses are usually diagnosed clinically. The podiatrist will test if the soft tissue mass has characteristics of ganglion cysts. These characteristics are that the mass is movable and soft.

X-ray studies are used in examining these cyst. The cysts are soft tissue and do not appear on x-ray, however, x-rays can rule out other diagnostic possibilities, such as calcified masses or bone invading tumors.

Diagnostic ultrasound is inexpensive and very effective at diagnosing and revealing the nature of the cyst. By studying the cyst with the ultrasound, the doctor can see the size, shape and the number of chambers in the mass.

MRIs may also be requested usually to determine the size and the degree of how much soft tissue is involved with the ganglion cyst. This is an expensive test and is most often used for surgical planning.

How do you treat a ganglion cyst? Non-surgical treatment: It is often difficult to treat ganglion cysts without surgery. However, non-surgical treatment can help relieve pain and symptoms from the ganglion cysts. Padding may be placed around the ganglion to decrease pressure and irritation to the area. Change in footwear may also be suggested to reduce friction and pressure to the area as well.

Aspiration of a Ganglion Cyst: This is done by first numbing the area with local anesthesia. Next, the site of aspiration is cleansed with antiseptic skin cleaner. Then, using an empty syringe and needle the fluid is pulled out of the ganglion cyst. After aspiration of the ganglion cyst, a syringe with steroid maybe injected. Also, it must be noted that there is a high risk of recurrence of the ganglion cyst after aspiration.

Surgical treatment: Surgery as a treatment for ganglion cysts is only considered if conservative treatment failed, the ganglion is recurring, or there is significant pain. Surgical removal of a ganglion cyst consists of removing the entire ganglion wall and surrounding soft tissue that is associated with the ganglion cyst. Since surrounding soft tissue needs to be removed, the incision site will need to be longer then the cyst. Pain, swelling, numbness, or tingling may occur after the surgery. As with aspiration procedure noted above, it must be noted that there is risk of recurrence rate after surgery as well.

Psoriasis and the Diet – Whole Foods and Organic Foods

Since the age of around 25 years old, my dad suffered from really bad psoriasis with very visible plaques on his scalp, elbows, knuckles and even on his back. The root cause of psoriasis

Psoriasis is caused by excessive development in the bottom layers of skin that push themselves to the surface and cause significant inflammation.


Toxicity in the body is caused by a wide variety of different things – the air we breathe, the water we drink, the clothes we wear, the chemicals that touch us. But one of the main causes of toxicity is a poor diet. Dermatologists are now starting to agree about the link between toxicity and psoriasis.

What we Found

A diet full of whole organic foods is one of the few factors that really helped to control and prevent the onset of psoriasis. Processed foods such as most cereals, pizzas, chocolates and other highly toxic foods such as red meat and excessive amounts of dairy should be replaced with oats, wheat, wholegrain bread, pasta, potatoes and fibrous vegetables.

Another small trick we added to his diet was to increase the amount of water that was drunk throughout the day. Water can help the liver, kidneys and bowels by flushing toxic out of the body. He drunk a pint of water as soon as he woke up, one pint at lunchtime and one in the evening with smaller amounts between.

By removing these from the diet we noticed a significant drop in the number and severity of plaques within the first week. Not only that, but complexion of the skin and his general well being improved greatly too.

That shows that my dad’s toxicity was highly linked to diet. For you that might not be the case, but there is no way of proving what is the cause of the toxicity in your blood so process of elimination is the logical way to solve it.
