The Value of Sports

Sports are a significant part of human life and always have been. Through sports we better understand cultural and human values, appreciate the human body, and strive for excellence. Sports are a great learning experience for children, and sports medals and custom ribbons can boost a child’s self confidence immensely.

The ancient Greeks were not the first people to appreciate sport, but are perhaps among the most famous. It was they who so admired the human form that they formed the same Olympics that are still around 2000 years later. The brutal blood sports the Romans indulged in reflect the values of a culture steeped in violence and born of conquest. Many Native Americans, especially those on the plains, valued competitions testing the speed and accuracy with which they could use their weapons, as many aspects of their hunter gatherer culture depended upon this.

In our culture today we see the commercialization of sports prevalent from high school games through all other levels to professional. What has been a pastime in other cultures has become a lifelong occupation for some in our culture. The better players are paid better and winning is the only option for success. What will people 1000 years from now think when they look back at our sports and the way we play them? Perhaps they will see the ferocious fans getting into fights with each other in the stands and even with players on the court or field. Perhaps they will see human beings sold like hunks of meat to run into one another and catch a ball for outrageous sums of money to giant sports franchises. What will they think of drug use and drug testing?

With so much emphasis within today’s society on winning in sports and across the board, the poor conduct of so many of the people involved in sports is not surprising. Sports should teach children the value of competition and how to endeavor towards excellence. They should try to be the best they can be, competing against themselves instead of others. This would shift the focus from dominating others to improving oneself.

The benefits of sport are numerous and highly researched. From inclusion and the elimination of racism to increasing graduation rates, athletics can be a crucial part of a person’s life and a beneficial one. One study showed that high school students involved in sports earned higher grades, got into trouble less often, were less likely to drop out, had higher GPA’s, and were more likely to graduate than students who did not participate in sports. Attitudes in high school sports must remain positive though. Focus on winning and domination of the competition can make kids feel unwanted, unworthy, and unacceptable, one expert argues. It should not teach children that they are failures, but teach them to handle failure, not to accept it, and to continue always to better themselves. If we continue the way we are going in sport, we will be training a generation of sore losers and cocky winners. We need to teach children the value of competition against oneself, in order that we can have generations of encouraging children who are always seeking to better themselves.

How To Detect Insomnia Symptoms: 10 Symptoms To Watch

Many known insomnia symptoms can be misconstrued as insomnia, when in some cases, they in fact are not. It’s a fact, however, that all insomnia symptoms are symptoms of sleep deprivation. After all, insomnia is sleep deprivation.

Lying in bed failing to fall asleep.

Oftentimes, people with anxiety disorders suffer from this. They spend a lot of time awake in bed unable to fall asleep. Feelings get in the way of sleeping. Worrying and fear can both cause sleeplessness.

Being psyched over something can also cause trouble sleeping. When people are excited, they can’t seem to fall asleep like kids on the night before Christmas.

Sleeping for a short period of time.

The average sleep duration for adults is 8 hours. Babies sleep almost more than half the day. Teens need around 9 hours or more. The duration of people’s sleep naturally decrease with age.

Sleeping for a short period of time shouldn’t always be counted as one of many insomnia symptoms. However, if a person who sleeps for say – 4 hours does not feel refreshed after sleep. It’s probably insomnia.

Being awake most of the night.

Being awake at night is a characteristic of “night people” or owls. They tend to stay up late for no reason and are usually more comfortable working in the wee hours of the night. If only they have the luxury of time and can sleep and wake up when they want to, they’d get enough sleep.

However, restrictions of work and study schedules exist. Night people working or studying during the day do end up sleep deprived.

Early morning awakening.

As it’s true for owls, it is also true for larks or “day people.” Studies have shown that the human sleep-wake cycle can be hereditary. An entire family sleeps at around 7:00PM and wakes really early in the morning. In cases like this, early morning awakening isn’t one of the many insomnia symptoms.

Older people may experience this which is related to the amount of sleep people need as they age. It is only considered insomnia if the person experiences other insomnia symptoms like feeling sleepy or tired during the day.

Middle of the night awakening and failing to get back to sleep.

There are insomniacs who wake up in the middle of the night and just can’t get back to sleep. Some can get back to sleep, but they wake up again after some time.

Patients who suffer from chronic pain are examples. If this is the case, insomnia goes away after the other medical condition is treated.

To wake up exhausted is not a feeling many people can stand. Supposedly, after a good night’s rest, a person feels refreshed and energetic. Among other symptoms of insomnia, fatigue is often a symptom of chronic cases or prolonged periods of insomnia.

A person is irritable, usually, when they feel unwell. Sleep deprivation can cause a person to feel and be that way.

Well, if a person does not get enough sleep, they do feel sleepy. Insomnia accounts for many instances wherein workers fall asleep in the workplace or children fall asleep in class.

It becomes dangerous to the insomniac and the people around them if a sleepy individual drives. Sleepy drivers often end up in accidents. In many fatal accidents, the driver falls asleep behind the wheel. In the workplace, sleepy workers are involved in twice as much accidents compared to those that get enough sleep.

Insomnia can be a symptom of depression and depression can also be a symptom of insomnia.

The danger in depression is that it can eventually lead to suicide. Insomnia per se, can’t kill, but severe depression can make a person kill or think of killing himself.

Impaired mental function

Not getting enough sleep leaves the brain unable to recharge. This leads to memory loss and difficulty in concentrating.

Headaches or migraines

Following countless sleepless nights, a person can experience headaches and migraines.

These are the 10 symptoms of insomnia. If a person goes through several of these symptoms, it’s definitely insomnia.

Diabetes – What Are The Risk Factors?

Diabetes is like the film that was "years in the making" -it takes literally years for Diabetes to develop. If you know what to look for you can see it coming and actually prevent it all together. If you do not see it coming until you have it-it is too late.

The risk factors are as obvious as the nose on your face. Here's how you can overcome some of them and possibly avoid this terrible disease

The risk factors for Diabetes basically fall into two basic categories: Controllable and Uncontrollable. Most of them are interrelated.

The CONTROLLABLE risk factors are:

WEIGHT. Too much body fat particularly around the mid section. As we get older our metabolism slows down making it more difficult to maintain / lose weight. Unless you have been under a rock somewhere you probably have heard about the growing obesity problem in America.

SMOKING. Smoking makes it more difficult to get your blood sugar under control. Smoking has all sorts of other associated risks as well.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. A direct result of being overweight and a risk factor for other serious diseases.

HIGH CHOLESTEROL. A direct result of diet and indirectly weight.

INACTIVITY. A by product of weight. As you get older your energy level declines leading to inactivity and weight gain.

DEPRESSION. People who are depressed often are inactive and gain weight.

Some UNCONTROLLABLE risk factors are:

FAMILY HISTORY. If mom or pop had it your chances of getting it are pretty good.

ECONOMIC STATUS. There is a growing amount of scientific evidence that relates income levels to diet which relates directly to obesity. I have had a gut feeling that obesity is more a problem of the poor than the well to do. These studies seem to bear this out. In other words, poorer folks do not eat as well which leads to obesity.

AGE. If you are over 50 you are more likely to get type 2 diabetes. Guess why? After 50 your metabolism slows down, you're less active, etc. You are more likely to gain weight and on and on.

Are you starting to see a theme here? As my doc used to say "it is all about the weight." Lose weight and your blood pressure goes down, your cholesterol is lowered, you will probably be exercising making you sleep better and a happier person. What's not to like with that?

Plus you will lower the major risk factors for a disease you do not want. What are you waiting for?

Acupuncture For Hives – Correcting Your Qi As Treatment For Urticaria Sufferers

Most common urticaria treatments available today aren’t really cures in any form, but rather a way of masking the unpleasant symptoms of hives. An antihistamine or steroidal shot may do just the trick in relieving the itching and burning on the skin, but these medical solutions certainly can’t promise to keep urticaria at bay for good.

Well neither can acupuncture, but the difference is in how it works to potentially bring chronic urticaria sufferers the finalized relief that they have been seeking. Unlike most medications that are often times prescribed for the treatment of urticaria, acupuncture isn’t designed to hide symptoms, but rather pinpoint the exact trouble zones in the body that might be causing urticaria.

Although many professional acupuncturists would agree that nothing is guaranteed in treating urticaria through the use of needles, one thing is for certain and has been proven through numerous studies – acupuncture is fairly effective at relieving inflammation and pain in the body with many disorders, including skin problems such as hives.

So What Is Acupuncture & How Does It Work?

Acupuncture dates back to more than 2,000 years ago as a form of oriental medicine where it was first developed and used in China, although specific origins are unknown. In Chinese medicine, and from the perspective of acupuncturists, the body contains Qi (chi) which is a flow of energy working in a perfect unity of the human system; connecting mind, body and spirit. The channels of energy are referred to as meridians, and the aim of an acupuncturist is to restore the flow of qi, believing that a blocking of energy can lead to health problems.

Whether your first thought is that it’s hocus pocus or not, consider the fact that since the 1970s, doctors, dentists and other healthcare practitioners have incorporated acupuncture in their clinics. In 2007 about 3 million Americans used acupuncture. Many patients are repeat customers who continue to use this medicine to relieve the pain experienced from a large platter of health problems, including sciatica and arthritis. It’s even used in some hospitals as a form of complimentary medicine for cancer patients.

Acupuncture Is No Stranger To Urticaria

There is evidence that shows that acupuncture along with herbal medicine was being used for skin disorders as far back as 3 A.D. In fact, in oriental medicine hives are described as “the wind” and it’s “invasion” of the skin and meridians.

If the welts are of red coloring, then through acupuncture it’s believed that the cause will be of both wind and heat. If they are pinkish or white in appearance, then it’s typically determined that it’s a combination of both wind and coldness that are afflicting the skin. It’s important to note that there is a lot more that goes into diagnosing the problem from the angle of an acupuncturist.

The goal of acupuncture in treating urticaria consists of two things. One is to hopefully tackle the root problem and relieve the issue permanently, while the second involves addressing the branch issues in the qi and alleviating the symptoms as fast as possible. Considering that there are at least 2,000 points and up to 20 meridian channels – there is plenty to work with.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

The pain management of this type of medicine is certainly individual specific, but in most cases many people either mention that there was no pain, or very little of a sensation felt. An experienced acupuncturist will make sure to use well-sanitized needles, put your worries at ease, and be so skillful that you probably won’t even notice once he/she begins.

The Acupuncture Points That Are Used To Treat Urticaria

One of the questions that you may have on your mind is which portions of the body will be used with needles. It can’t be said in a black and white fashion which part of the anatomy will be used, but we can address the most common points that are often times approached. Just keep in mind that your experience may be different.

The spleen 10 point (SP10 or Xuehai) is regarded as one of the most common acupuncture points when it comes to skin issues. Although a needle is not inserted into the spleen directly, it is positioned at the back of the knee, which can help improve the flow of qi through the meridian and to this area.

The large intestine, or LI11 (Quchi) is another common trigger point that can be stimulated by insertion of a needle in and around the inside elbow.

SP6, also known as San Yin Jiao, is another acupuncture point associated with the spleen. It’s located at the back of the lower leg and beneath the calf muscle.

The positive effects of stimulating all of these trigger points when practiced on are in aiding with digestive issues, spleen disorders, hot skin diseases, blood disorders, anxiety, hypertension, inflammation, damp heat skin diseases, hives and acne.

What Is The Efficacy Of Acupuncture As A Hives Treatment?

Very few studies have been conducted on these two items paired up together specifically. However, in Iran at a medical university, a placebo vs. genuine acupuncture test was given to about 100 patients over the course of several weeks. All of them suffered from chronic urticaria, and naturally the point of the study was to determine if there were any positive results ascertained from using acupuncture.

When the study was concluded, the evidence pointed at the fact that the real form of acupuncture was able to control the intensity and duration of hives outbreaks by about 25%.

The professionals who conducted the research also made note that the final week seemed to show the greatest improvement for the patients, and noted that there was a pattern of episodes reducing in duration and

intensity with each treatment.

However, just like with any form of medicine, it’s still regarded that acute urticaria is much easier to treat with acupuncture than chronic hives. Although patients with chronic and idiopathic forms of urticaria are not left hopeless, as several follow-up appointments involving treatment with an acupuncturist may bring desired results.

Luckily, options are a plenty. There are 6 different acupuncture methods designed to overthrow urticaria.

Auricular Acupuncture As Treatment For Urticaria

For people who suffer with chronic urticaria, a combination of both standard and auricular acupuncture can result in a positive ending after several repeat treatments.

Auricular acupuncture is considered a microsystem in Eastern medicine, because it deals with specific trigger points that can all be located in one part of the body – in this case the ears.

To perform auricular acupuncture, it requires someone with both a gifted hand and mind, because there are many points on the ear; with each requiring delicate and steady precision.

In fact, there are over 200 points to be exact, with ones that lead to fingers, elbows, allergy points, shoulder, face and more.

Acupuncture Point Injection For Hives

Acupuncture Point Injection is a marriage between an ancient Eastern medicine and pharmacology. The idea is simple – inject medicine into acupuncture points.

The medicines that are most commonly used for this are Chinese herbal medicines, B vitamins, antibiotics and magnesium sulfate. The one that is used specifically for chronic urticaria sufferers is vitamin B1 (thiamine). People who have been studying urticaria closely will notice that the discussion of B vitamins come up frequently. B1, 3, 6 & 12 are also believed to be essential in the easing of hives.

Hopefully, this article will help you understand the process of acupuncture and it’s relationship with hives in the past. It should also help you to see that there are many treatment options outside of conventional medicine.

How to Get Rid of Toenail Fungus

The toenail fungus can be defined as a common problem in which, a fungus or bacteria get attracted to dark and damp environments and locate right under and around the toenails. There, the microorganism thrives under protection of the nail itself. Fungus feels best in warm environment provided by your socks and shoes. It gets enough sweat or moisture to live and spread and finally, makes the nail discolored, one of the features of fungal infection of the toenail.

The condition is medically known as onychomycosis that is generally featured by little pain (initial stage), itching and discoloration of the nail. The discoloration can be brown, yellow, dark purple or white. There will be swelling of the toe and thickening and crumbling of the nail. There are streaks of spots on the nail and in worse cases the entire nail is destructed.

To get rid of toenail fungal infection, one should take precaution that the fungus should not progress further. The first thing to be done is keeping the hygiene. The socks are to be washed with disinfectant solution and one should put disinfectant powder in the socks and shoes. Such powder absorbs the sweat and other moisture from the fungus infected nails and cuticles keeping them dry and healthy.

One can apply some essential oils such as lavender, tea tree or olive essential oils alone or in the combination onto the affected areas. These essential oils are having healing property for the skin and hence, can be effective in treating the toenail fungal infections. Some of the people suggest using vinegar; whether white or apple cider to cure fingernail or toenail fungal infection in a safe way.

Some of the naturopaths suggest using simple vapor rubs as simplest way to cure fingernail infection. However, there are no researches, studies or clinical trials, but vapor rubs are considered to be effective treating toenail infections especially the fungal infections. Soaking affected food into the lukewarm water containing fresh raw garlic bulbs can also help curing the situation up to major extent. Garlic is disinfectant, anti-fungal and antibacterial agent that can cleanse that local area in very effective way. One should keep in mind that after any application or soaking, the toenail are to be thoroughly dried because if it remains wet or moist, there are fair chances for fungus to grow again.

Another great way to cure toenail fungal infection is applying diluted Listerine and clove’s oil that has capability to eliminate any infection especially fungal. One can apply mixture of those oils through eyedropper. However, if the nail has almost destroyed due to the fungus that has now deeply seated into the nail tissues and is not responding to any of the natural or home remedies, local incision remains the only treatment. This is the surgical procedure in which, the affected nail is removed and then the affected area is covered with bandage for some days; patient being on antibiotic courses should change the dressings on the regular basis.

Penis Pain – Psoriasis and the Penis

Psoriasis is the most common autoimmune disease in the U.S., according to the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF); around 2.2 % of the population, or roughly 1 in 50 people, are affected by the condition; and yes, psoriasis can occur in the genital region, resulting in a sore, itchy, red penis. In addition to the treatment options for psoriasis explored below, maintaining proper penis care can keep the skin as healthy as possible, eliminating potentially embarrassing conditions below the belt.

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that affects both men and women. Unfortunately, men are more likely to be afflicted with plaque-type psoriasis in the genital area then women are. Luckily, psoriasis is non-contagious and therefore cannot be transmitted to a sexual partner. Psoriasis is not an STD, though an under the sheets workout may occasionally be linked to a flair up of the condition. Using a condom during sex may help protect the affected area, reducing direct friction and possibly preventing further physical injury to the area. Unfortunately, psoriasis on the penis can be a painful condition that may interfere with a man’s sex life, which is why it is important to seek treatment for the condition as soon as possible.

What does psoriasis look like?

Psoriasis presents with varying degrees of severity ranging from small, dry skin patches that are very mild and may even go unnoticed, to thick, red scaly patches of skin and areas of plaque. It can appear anywhere on the body but is commonly found on the elbows, knees and scalp. Many people are embarrassed by the appearance, particularly if it appears in the nether regions, and may avoid treatment or even fail to disclose it to a partner. While there is no cure, psoriasis often has good treatment outcomes, thus, treatment should not be avoided.

What are treatment options of psoriasis on the penis?

Individuals who suspect they have psoriasis of the penis should seek medical attention from a urologist or dermatologist to ensure it is not a more serious condition, such as an STD. There are many courses of treatment that a doc may recommend including:

Topical Steroids-Over the counter corticosteroids have been found to be very effective in treating penile psoriasis. The medication reduces inflammation and red penis symptoms. For more severe cases of psoriasis, a doctor may recommend prescription strength steroid cream.

Non-Steroid Topical Medication- Various other ointments may be applied topically, which do not include steroids as an active ingredient. Options may include salicylic acid, an ingredient which causes the outer, scaly layer of the skin to shed.

Biologics- Biologic drugs are given by injection, they target specific parts of the immune system and block T cells which contribute to psoriasis. Some injections are given intramuscularly and can be self-administered, while others are intravenous and are given in the doctor’s office.

Ultraviolet Treatment- UV treatment, or light therapy, may be used to treat psoriasis of the penis. Such treatment is a long-standing type of therapy that has been used for psoriasis for decades; often, the patient must go to the doctor’s office for the treatment.

Moisturizers and Bath Solutions- Some doctors may recommend bathing in Epsom salts or Dead Sea salts as a way to reduce inflammation of the area. Using a moisturizer to keep the skin well hydrated may also decrease redness and itching of the area. Combining the two may provide an excellent at-home remedy to reduce the day-to-day symptoms of penis psoriasis. Applying a penis vitamin formula such as Man 1 Man Oil immediately after a bath and while the skin is still damp can help lock in moisture and rejuvenate the skin of the penis. An all-natural crème that is specially formulated for the penis will also provide needed nutrients to reduce skin irritation, improve circulation, and enhance sensitivity of the area.

Understanding Ankle Injury

Around 1 in 10,000 people sustain an ankle injury each day and about 5% do not fully recover. Generally, the typical sorts of ankle injuries fall into two categories: acute sprains or overuse injuries.

Some actions such as pivoting on the ankle can create extreme pressure on the ligaments, causing tearing or disruption of the ankle’s outer ligament complex. The effects are immediate bleeding and swelling around the outer border of ankle and some compression to the injured ankle whilst elevating it will ensure that no further immediate damage is done.

If, after a course of physiotherapy symptoms fail to settle down after the usual six to twelve week healing period, those who continue to get pain, swelling, clicking prescribed for the first 48 hours followed by a supervised physiotherapy programme.

Ankle arthroscopy has revolutionised treatment of ankle injuries, both in diagnosis and surgery as x-rays and magnetic scans can miss problems in the ankle particularly where the damage is to the soft tissue. It is difficulty in bearing weight.

For those who fall victim to this type of sprain or injury, it is important to take quick action. In these cases the conservative forms of treatment are best which include:

  • Immediate rest lce compression Elevation
  • A programme of physiotherapy

Some specialists prefer a two to three week period immobilising the injured ankle in a walking plaster cast to reduce chronic instability and further problems. In either event after six to twelve weeks, around 95% of these injuries make a full recovery.

Overuse Injury

During any game of sport, the ankle is subjected to enormous pressure. Over time a variety of injuries can occur. When repetitive minor injuries occur to the Achilles tendon swelling, inflammation and partial tears to the collagen fibres are produced. This condition, known as chronic Achilles tendonitis is very difficult to cure. Treatment often involves long periods of rest, physiotherapy, the use of ultrasound, and the modification of footwear.

In mildly arthritic or worn ankle joints, small pieces of bone may break off. This can present with pain, swelling, locking, a sensation of instability and occasionally the joint can give way.

For those who have injured themselves whilst playing sport, it is best to stop playing immediately as continuing can further aggravate the injury. Pain is, after all, the body’s way of telling us that something is wrong. Similarly if joints are regularly locking, clicking or giving way, this is an indication that something may be amiss. During exercise the body secretes its own morphines which can mask the pain arising from a damaged joint, muscle or tendon. Athletes or sports enthusiasts who ignore pain are more likely to develop further problems later on. Resting, applying ice and or locking in their ankle really should be referred to a specialist for treatment.

Until five to ten years ago, surgery in this area of the body was a lengthy and painful ordeal. Surgery required the patient to stay in hospital, certainly overnight and more usually for two or three days. Accessing the joint meant making a fairly large incision which, combined with the effects of the general anaesthetic added to the recuperation period. What’s more, the patient left hospital on crutches, often in plaster, with a sizeable scar.

In practice, very few ankle injuries could be treated and the results of surgery were often unsatisfactory. The joint was just too small for the instruments available and for surgeons to see inside the joint.

Ankle Surgery Today

Technological developments have led to ankle arthroscopy or keyhole surgery, which has transformed the treatment of ankle injuries. Two or three tiny holes are made around the ankle, into which 2mm wide fibre optics are fed. Surgeons are able to carry out the intricate range of repairs and procedures whilst watching the operation on-screen. This type of surgery can usually be undertaken as a day-case procedure. Patients typically experience very little postoperative pain and are able to walk out of hospital with no difficulty.

Results are better, there is less discomfort involved, shorter hospital stays, lower complication rates and shorter recovery times. The cosmetic results are better too – very often just a couple of tiny scars that are barely visible or quickly fade.

Rest and elevation of the limb is becoming a very important tool in the sporting world, and is helping to extend the professional careers of some athletes and sports professionals.

Another surgical instrument development which is very useful in an area such as the ankle is the ArthroWand which is used for ‘coblation’ – a new technique for removing damaged soft tissue rapidly and precisely with minimal damage to surrounding tissue.

The method disintegrates tissue layer by layer, giving the surgeon excellent control to remove tissue whilst leaving the healthy tissue intact.

As a result the coblation wand improves operative precision and efficiency for the surgeon. The patient enjoys reduced postoperative pain, less bleeding, reduced surgical time and a speedier recovery.

However good today’s technology has become, prevention is always better than cure. For those who lead an active life or are involved in regular sport, joint flexibility and regular stretching programmes are key. Stretching calf muscles, hamstrings and quads really is the main route to preventing foot and ankle problems. The muscles act as shock absorbers for the skeletal system and short, tight muscles have less shock absorbing capacity.

Today there seems to be training shoes for every combination of sport and good footwear is really valuable in avoiding injury. Well fitting shoes with a shock absorbing system built in will help. However, be aware that these sort of shoes lose their shock absorbing capacity after about three month of use. Sorbathane rubber insoles may extend the life a little.

Home Treatment of Toenail Fungus – Toenail Fungus Treatment

Toenail fungus occurs when a fungus (Fungus belongs to the plant family that includes dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds. In some incidents, fungi can infect and damage tissue, such as skin, hair, or nails. Fungi also may be involved in infections throughout the body, such as in the central nervous system or the bloodstream) attacks the fingernails, toenails or skin surrounding either nail and nail bed. In most cases fungus will not harm a healthy person but it can damage the nail and nail bed if left unchecked. So we start our toenail fungus treatment by understanding that our enemy is a living organism.

OK Now That I Know What It Is What Are The Symptoms?

What symptoms is our home treatment for toenail fungus attempting to treat? Well there are several tell tale signs of a nail infection.

  • Thickening of the nail
  • Nail turns black
  • Crumbling of the nail
  • Splitting of the nail
  • Yellowing of the nail

All of these signs can indicate a nail fungus problem now it's just our job to fix it.

Finally what over the counter or home treatments can be used to treat toenail fungus?

First realize that if you do not treat your toenail fungus it will not go away. Second know that it is not easy to treat toenail fungus. Sometimes it can be expensive and not all treatments will be successful. So truly it is a matter of finding the right treatment for you so that you can wear sandals or take off your socks in public without being embarrassed how your nails look. After spending a lot of time looking through forums, Web MD and other web based information out there I have not been able to find house hold products such as vinegar, beach or peroxide that are both safe and effective at home treatment. How ever there do seem to be many mail away treatments that people report having seen safe, effective results from.

Ultimately you are going to need an antifungal treatment to get rid of your nail infection. Antifungal creams come in pills and topical treatments and either can be used as a home treatment of toenail fungus. Antifungal pills often offer a quicker more effective treatment but come with the chance of side effects. Many also require a doctors prescription. However some topical treatments can be very effective as well and hold a lesser chance of side effects. They seem to be much more practical as home treatments for nail fungus. If you're in need of a strong antifungal treatment that comes highly recommended, is inexpensive and easy to find.

Is it Allergies Or Asthma When I Can’t Breathe?

When you have trouble breathing, how do you know if it is asthma or allergies? It is all too easy to assume that if someone is experiencing tightening of the throat or a constriction of the bronchial passages or airway, then it must be some form of asthma.

The advice in this article in no way supersedes that of a physician, but is meant as a first step towards awareness. The following five points will help when trying to deciding whether the breathing difficulties being experienced are due to asthma or to an allergic reaction.

1. Timing–One of the first things that you should consider is when the symptoms occur. If, for example, the breathing difficulty only occurs after exercise, or at stressful times, or after laughing very hard, then the chances are that the condition is asthma based.

However, there are some gray areas where it may be hard to tell. For example, some asthmatics can find the condition triggered by strong odors, such as cleaning agents and detergents. This could easily be confused as being an allergic reaction, and so unless the cause is very obvious, make no further assumptions as to whether it is asthma or an allergies, but check the next four points on this list.

2. Flaky/itchy skin–Check the skin for any flaky or irritated patches. You may not have associated the breathing difficulty with the itchiness of the skin, but the two may very well be twin reactions to a common cause. Eczema is a condition that causes flaky, damaged, and irritated skin. If this occurs at roughly the same as the breathing difficulty it tends to indicate allergies.

3. Nasal Discharge–The body’s main way of getting rid of any foreign body or unwanted irritant is to flush it out, which results in a discharge. This is exactly what happens if you have a cold for example – the body tries to flush out the harmful bacteria by causing your nasal glands to work overtime. With allergies, the body over reacts to a harmless allergen, and this can result in a excess mucous in the nose. If you find your breathing difficulty occurs as a result, this is highly suggestive of an allergic reaction.

4. Discharge from ears–This isn’t always easy to spot because we can’t look in our ears! But if you do notice that you seem to need to clean your ears more frequently, that there is extra wax build up, or even that your hearing is deteriorating slightly, then this can also suggest an allergic reaction. If you notice any discharge from the ears, either one or both, this may be indicative of an allergy, and should be checked immediately by a physician.

5. Watery Eyes–Watery eyes can be the result of your eyes attempt to flush out irritants, or a sticky discharge which may be yellowish in color usually indicating infection. Either of these may be strongly suggestive of the body over reacting to some form of allergen, and is likely to mean that any breathing difficulty you experience is the result of an allergic reaction.

Asthma very rarely occurs in conjunction with other symptoms. The only exception tends to be the fact that many asthmatics have a tendency to suffer from eczema, though this does not usually happen at the same time. Eczema may occur quite independently of any breathing difficulty, and will last for much longer than any allergic reaction would.

Knowing and understanding these different symptoms and whether they indicate asthma or allergies will help you to ensure you get the right treatment for the right condition.

In Bible Versus Quran: The Serpent Is The Craftiest Animal

Who is cursed in Bible vs. Quran-1?

This is the first article of the series: “Who is cursed in Bible versus Quran”

In the Bible the Lord God says that the earth and the serpent are cursed.

The Earth is Cursed because of Adam; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for Adam to eat; the serpent is cursed because of Eve and it will eat dust.

In the Quran, Allah has cursed Iblis (Satan or the Devil).

Who is cursed in the Bible? (1)

The following verses, Genesis 3: 1, 11-18, which talks about Adam and Eve, reveals some interesting facts; they are:

1-     God has cursed the Earth and the serpent

2-     The serpent is the craftiest animal and is the cause of Eve’s fall

3-     Eve is the cause of Adam’s fall

4-     Man rules over woman

5-     The serpent eats dust

6-     Adam was essentially vegetarian.

The verses Genesis 3: 1, 11-18 say:

The serpent is deceitful and skillful in evil schemes; it is craftier than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. The serpent said to Eve, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”

God said unto Adam, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I have commanded you not to eat from?”

Adam said unto the Lord God, “The woman (Eve) whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.”

The Lord God said to Eve, “What is this you have done?” Eve said, “The serpent deceived and beguiled me, and I ate.”

God said unto the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

God said unto Eve, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

The Lord God said unto Adam, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat of it,’ “Cursed is the ground (the Earth) because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it (the Earth) all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field.”

Who is cursed in the Quran? (1)

The following verses, 15:26-44, which talks about Adam’s creation, reveals some interesting facts; they are:

1-     Allah created the jinn before the creation of Adam

2-     Allah created Adam of black mud that stinks; this indicates that the Bacteria (stinks) were mixed with the clay-Adam. These bacteria would form later on the normal body flora in the living-Adam.  This normal body flora comprises 60-70% of the immunity of any human being including Adam.

3-     Allah celebrated the creation of Adam by commanding the Angels to prostrate once the clay-Adam turns out to be the living Adam when Allah places the spirit into him. This prostration is the Angel’s greeting for Adam and it is a great honor for mankind.

4-     The Angels prostrated save the too proud Iblis (Satan) who was standing among the angels, watching Adam’s creation.

5- Then, there was a dialogue between Allah and Satan.

The verses 15:26-44 say:

Allah created the jinn before the creation of Adam of smokeless fire, of permeative fire that can escape through openings.

Allah created Adam of black mud that stinks.

Allah said to the angels, “Indeed I am going to create a mortal out of clay of black stinking mud”. “So, when I have proportioned him, when I created his hands, legs, eyes and the rest of him and I have breathed into him of My Spirit, so that he becomes a living thing, fall down in prostration before him!’

And so, the angels fell prostrate to Adam, all of them together. Except Iblis (Satan or the Devil), he was [standing] among the angels: he felt too proud and refused to be among those prostrating to Adam.

Then, there was a dialogue between Allah and Satan (Iblis):

Allah said: O Iblis! Why you are not among those prostrating? Why do you not prostrate to Adam?

Satan said: Why should I prostrate myself before a mortal whom you have created out of clay of black stinking mud; it is not becoming of me to prostrate to black stinking mud.

Allah said: ‘Then be gone from hence, that is, from standing among the angels — but it is also said, from the heavens — for you are indeed accursed, outcast, and banished from My mercy.  And indeed My curse and the curse of the angels and all created beings shall be upon you until the Day of Judgment, the Day of Requital.

Satan said: My Lord! Reprieve me until the day when they, mankind, shall be resurrected and are raised from the grave; the accursed did not wish to taste death.

Allah said: you are reprieved, you will be given respite. Till an appointed time, the time of the first blast of the Trumpet.

Satan said: ‘My Lord, because You have lead me astray I shall adorn for them all the evil acts in the earth and I shall lead all of them astray. Except those servants of Yours who are protected from me, who are sincerely devoted to You.

Allah said: The straight path leading to Me is the right and honored course.  Lo! As for My servants, the devoted believers, you shall have nether warrant nor power over them; except those who follow you from among the wicked, the disbelievers. And truly Hell shall be their destination; all those who follow and obey you shall be with you in Hell.

The Bible: Genesis 3: 1, 11-18 (English Standard Version)

1Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”

11He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.

15I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

16To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

17And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;

18thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field.

The Quran: Verses 15:26-44 (Pickthal translation)

﴿26﴾ verily we created man of potter’s clay of black mud altered,

﴿27﴾and the jinn did we create aforetime of essential fire.

﴿28﴾ and (remember) when thy lord said unto the angels: lo! I am creating a mortal out of potter’s clay of black mud altered,

﴿29﴾ so, when I have made him and have breathed into him of my spirit, do ye fall down, prostrating yourselves unto him.

﴿30﴾ so the angels fell prostrate, all of them together

﴿31﴾ save Iblis. He refused to be among the prostrate.

﴿32﴾ he said: o Iblis! What aileth thee that thou art not among the prostrate?

﴿33﴾ he said: I am not one to prostrate myself unto a mortal whom thou hast created out of potter’s clay of black mud altered!

﴿34﴾ he (Allah)  said: then go thou forth from hence, for lo! Thou art outcast.

﴿35﴾ and lo! The curse shall be upon thee till the Day of Judgment.

﴿36﴾ he said: my lord! Reprieve me till the day when they are raised.

﴿37﴾ he said: then lo! Thou art of those reprieved

﴿38﴾ till the day of appointed time.

﴿39﴾ he said: my lord! Because thou hast sent me astray, I verily shall adorn the path of error for them in the earth, and shall mislead them every one,

﴿40﴾﴾ save such of them as are thy perfectly devoted slaves.

﴿41﴾ he said: this is a right course incumbent upon me:

﴿42﴾ lo! As for my slaves, thou hast no power over any of them save such of the froward as follow thee,

﴿43﴾ and lo! For all such, hell will be the promised place.

The wisdom of Adam’ story in the Quran:

1) Before Allah has given Adam the spirit to live, the clay-Adam was stinking; and after the spirit leaves the man when he dies, he will stink again.

2) So, the man’s beginning was stinking and the man’s end is eventually stinking too.  The spirit provided by Allah is between the two man’ stink.

3) Our body is material + spirit.  We almost always give our material part its proper nourishment.  Also, our spirit part needs sustenance too by being connected to its Creator.  Unfortunately, most of us do not give their spirit part its proper nourishment; and that is why most us are not happy and will never ever be satisfied. Hence, the secret of happiness is in our spirit part.

4) It is Satan, not the serpent, who is our essential enemy.

5) In other verses of the Quran, both Adam and Eve ate from the tree at the same time; so Eve was not the cause of Adam’s fall.

Back to my question to the smart and interested reader:

Is the Quran quoted from the Bible?

What is the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Ovarian Cyst Link?

Hormones are a very important factor to consider when trying to determine the irritable bowel syndrome ovarian cyst link. Since women are more affected by the irritable bowel syndrome and intestinal disorders compared to men, and ovarian cysts only affect women, gender-sensitive issues regarding diagnosis, pathophysiology and interventions have been specifically designed.

Ovarian cysts are usually considered a functional disorder, which means that they develop when a normal function of the body works abnormally, and they form only during the years that a women is ovulating regularly. It is still possible to acquire a cyst later in life, but it would have formed initially when the woman was still ovulating.

Irritable bowel syndrome is also considered a functional disorder. There are a number of theories about the cause, and although there are trigger factors that have been identified, the cause of IBS is still a mystery.

Some studies have shown that a person, who has irritable bowel syndrome, suffers from a brain-gut abnormality due to faulty communication between the two areas of the body. It is believed that communications get confused, causing hypersensitivity in the colon.

One common symptom present in both irritable bowel syndrome and functional ovarian cysts is abdominal pain. The pain experienced by individuals having irritable bowel syndrome is mainly caused by gas accumulation from swallowed air and formation of gas from microorganisms and digested food, which exerts pressure on the intestinal tract and the colon. The pressure can make the distended intestines come into contact with the ovaries, which then also lead to pain experiences due to hypersensitive nerves in the area.

Also, as women are more likely to suffer with IBS, and that IBS has been reported to be worse during menstruation, there seems to be a link between hormones and IBS. Women generally have more severe symptoms than men, needing more medication or treatment to relieve the symptoms.

There is an estrogen receptor in our small intestines and stomach, and when the levels of hormones change there can be a reaction. Also, during menstruation, in which most women have said that their IBS symptoms worsen dramatically, there is a high production of progesterone, which trigger uterine cramping, which can effect the hypersensitive colon and increase gastrointestinal muscle spasms.

Although it is feasible that there is a functional irritable bowel syndrome ovarian cyst link, with the one physiologically triggering the other there is little evidence to suggest this is the case.

Depression – Quick Cures

Depression can be a paralyzing situation. It can last only hours or for days and months.

Depression can sometimes be described as hopeless and despairing, like being in a dark cave with no exit in sight. The depressed person yearns for a return to 'normal' life, and though like being in a pit, can not put themselves out.

There are several simple techniques to help relief the pain of depression and alleviate the symptoms.

Drink water. Most of the common ailments which hamper us could be reduced by being properly hydrated. Drinking a cup of water every hour on the hour is a method I use so I can be functioning at peak performance, mentally and physically.

Deep breathing. When we are babies we breath from our diaphragm. Sometime as children we transition to shallow breathing from our lungs, which is not as effective for getting oxygen to our brains. Lie down and put your hands on your abdomen. Breathe so that your belly raises and lowers with each inhale and exhale.

Exercise. Regular exercise is so necessary for keeping mind and body fit and healthy. Join a gym, ride a bike, swim, or go for a walk with the dog. Any activity will help perk up the mind of the depressed person. Force yourself to take that first step toward the activity and soon it will become almost automatic.

Nutrition. Eating properly is a very important key to maintaining mental health. Certain foods can cause biochemical reactions in the body which will affect moods. Keep a journal of what you eat and how it affects you. Do your best to eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy, and protein. Today's produce is deficient of the necessary nutrients for our optimal health and well being. It is necessary to add vitamins and nutritional supplements to our diets. Included in this should be an endrocrine support supplement which will stabilize and balance hormones. For me, this has been one of the vital keys to my mental health.

Rest and a good night sleep. I think the Latin world with their 'siestas' have a good thing going. A midday rest gives the mind and body a needed break from the frenetic activity that defines our lives. Getting a solid night's sleep helps the brain and melatonin restore to healthy levels. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone that aids as an anti-oxidant and helps with some forms of depression.

Prayer. Our lives are on constant 'go-go-go'! Praying to God opens up channels of grace that will aid in the restoration of hope and peace in our lives.

Just do it. If depression is keeping you from taking action on something necessary in your life, force yourself to go and do it. Many times the very action of activity will be the catalyst to help lift the depression.

Friends. Have a couple of friends that you can count on to share with and lean on. Feelings of loneliness can become more acute with depression. Trusted friends will offer wise counsel and patient advice to help and not hurt you.

Professional help. Should the depression last longer than a week or two or symptoms of despair become life threatening, professional help should be sought !! Prescribed medicines can provide the stimulus for healing where the simple home 'remedies' outlined above are not working.

Above all, do not be afraid. You are not alone. Your life is a beautiful gift waiting to be unwrapped. Follow the steps and find sunny days once again shining on you!

What Is Fear and How It Can Manifest Itself?

Fear is the occurrence of stress and anxiety arising as a result of a perceived threat to our future safety or status. Symptoms of fear include elevated heart rate levels and tension throughout our entire body. These symptoms, known as the ‘fight or flight’ response, sharpen our body’s senses in readiness. Unfortunately, unlike our early ancestors, we rarely face mortal danger in our modern world, resulting in an unnatural chemical imbalance within the body. This can have a negative effect on our health and mental wellbeing as the chemicals and hormones released during this process, place a lot of stress on our body’s organs.

Our primary concern as humans is that of physical and emotional survival. Many of our fears are instilled within our psyche from a very early age and help to protect us as we become adults. Resulting fear responses arise from our early adult experiences and develop a set of subconscious rules which help us avoid loss, pain, and emotional discomfort throughout the remainder of our lives.

Fear arises when your subconscious mind believes a dangerous or harmful event will occur in the future. Nervous expectation will give way to a desire to avoid the event/situation. The strength of these symptoms will depend on the gravity or danger level of the perceived threat. Careful rationalization of the perceived threat and analysis of the expected results should help to calm your nerves and at that point, action should be taken to ensure that if the event does come to pass, the effects will be minimal.

If we do not confront these fears through this method of rationalization, they will usually evolve into what is known as a phobia. Once a phobia has taken hold it can be very difficult to relieve the stress caused by its triggering association. In most cases a prolonged course of analysis by a credible psycho-therapist will be required. It is possible to slowly decrease the severity of the phobia gradually through self-help methods which gently expand your sphere of comfort, also known as you comfort zone.

Spiritual Anxiety – Diagnosis, Motivation, and Beyond

There's that amusing scene in the cartoon comedy Kung Fu Panda where Kung Fu Master Shifu attempts to calm his spirit in the local temple by haltingly reciting the mantra "inner peace" … while obviously distraught, distracted, and annoyed by area sounds.

I. Diagnosing Spiritual Anxiety

Perhaps most of us are a little like that. We know we should have inner peace, but we are irritated, tense, and anxious. Our spirits are more like a storm and less like a gentle breeze.

What is going on inside us? At some level, many identify the human spirit with mere emotions which have merely chemical causes and effects. I am anxious because of my hormones and the complex interactions between my brain and body.

Of course such chemical and physical chains of events have been observed with their corresponding emotions. The question then becomes whether more is going on.

Can my self-awareness, my will, moral responsibility, creativity and emotions be wholly explained by chemical determinism? Am I merely a complex chemical machine? Or does the web of cause and effect include a related, but partially transcendent element – a spark or life force, a soul or spirit?

We infer that mere chemical cause and effect can not wholly explain human existence, that there is a transcendent element in the network, what we might call the human spirit. And we here assume that spirit can both be influenced by the body and cause effects on it.

In short, there is such a thing as "spiritual anxiety" using the sense of "spirit" implied here, a form of anxiety which over time at least seems to work in tandem with what can be observed in the body – like tensed muscles , hyperventilation, rapid heart rate, digestive problems, sweating and so on. And while admitting that there are chemicals and physical exercises that can affect spiritual anxiety positively or negatively, our interest at present is limited to the question how we can use our spirits to become less anxious.

II. Motivation and Spiritual Anxiety

One challenge that comes immediately to mind is our inability by willing or wishing to turn off the worry or anxiety. Yet neither is the human will without influence over how we feel. Our choices of what to think and say and do have their impact. There seems to be a higher order, a human spirit, that can influence our emotions.

The problem may come then when we have spiritual anxiety, here meaning when the human spirit itself is infected, if you will, with fear. I am not one to argue that the human spirit exists or can exist in some other realm independent of the troubles and pleasures of human existence, however varied that existence may be. At least not while the body lives.

I can then suggest two responses. One, we humans may be observed to influence how we ourselves think and feel, and two, our spirits may be influenced by a higher Spirit still, a Being some call God. That may not be where you would go, but to me it is an explanation that seems to make sense of the evidence.

This is not to say that chemical causation inside our bodies can always be reversed by our spirits, though attitude apparently has more of an affect on our health and well-being than we may care to admit. Nor is it to say that our spirits necessarily have the ability to reduce anxiety. Nonetheless apparently some have overcome spiritual anxiety and anxiety disorders in no small measure because of their un-coerced choices, attitudes, and perspectives – that is apparently partly because of their spirits. Motivation is a key.

III. Beyond Spiritual Anxiety

Thus there appears to be an interplay between the anxious spirit as victim of anxiety's causes and the anxious spirit as responsible moral agent. My anxiety may be influenced by genetic predisposition and an under-active thyroid (or whatever), but faced with an abusive relationship or exposure to an emotionally traumatic event (perhaps a fatality in a car crash), one's spirit may rise above tragedy and evil to live in hope.

The question for the spiritually anxious reader is then whether there can be hope of peace or recovery for oneself. This assumes spiritual anxiety is entirely negative – as it feels – but it may be worth considering a possible silver lining. For example, is it possible spiritual anxiety motivates improvement, restrains pride, and provokes important questions about life priorities?

Be that as it may, an answer to the downside is that others have overcome (so why not you?), That a "higher Spirit" gives meaning and purpose even to anxiety, and that there are methods of coping and overcoming that can be tried. The question then remains: "What will you do to go beyond being anxious in your spirit?"
