The History of Obesity – How Long Has America Faced This Problem?

It’s obvious that obesity is a problem facing the United States, but when did it become seen as an epidemic? It’s not obesity that actually causes deaths, but is a cause of the many diseases that do: diabetes mellitus and vascular disease, for example. Medicare, however, announced obesity a disease in 2004, and as a result, we have access to many treatments, including diets, surgery, exercise programs and psychotherapy. We’ve really been thinking about obesity an epidemic much earlier than the year 2004, and we now talk about obesity as a global epidemic in many countries, including the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, and China. We think of obesity as the major public health problem of the twenty-first Century.

Some argue that we are panicking about obesity in a moral sense, not simply a wellness sense, whereas obesity is a condition that threatens our social values and norms. We’ve been defining it as a national problem, not an individual health problem. We are concerned about the implications on us as a society. Despite the fact that we’ve been concerned about obesity for a very long time, it wasn’t until the 1980s that obesity as an epidemic was identified for Americans. From the 1990s on, society has been on a quest to ascertain causes of obesity related to diesase; in 1997, researchers thought that obesity could be caused by a virus that mimics AIDS in the manner in which it spreads. In 2007, another group theorized that obesity might be caused by what they called a “social infection,” meaning that obese family and friends influence individuals to overeat, causing obesity.

Our social worry over obesity isn’t new. In literature, authors like Charles Dickens write about character types whose considerable physical characteristics represent stupidity, laziness, and general moral lacking. In the 1930s and 40s, doctors found a pituitary tumor in a young boy, and linked it directly to his obesity. We were obsessed with attempts to find specific causes for obesity because we were so afraid of it. Suddenly, obesity became inextricably connected to physical disease.

Obese people have long felt stigmatized by their weight. In Shakespeare, his character Falstaff searched for a cure for his weight because of his anxiety over it. Nineteenth-century doctors actually labeled Jews the “diabetic race,” supposedly because of their likelihood to overindulge. In the 1950s, a German-Jewish doctor named Hilde Bruch theorized that obesity truly sprang from family dysfunction and bad mothering.

Today, doctors point to American fast food and global financial progress as the cause of obesity instead of nodding toward racial causes. Perhaps obesity and its treatments are simply part of a system of modernization. We are obsessed with global health, leading to our anxiety about the obesity epidemic. Truly, it’s not bad to be worried about obesity numbers in the world; the number of obese people in this country is steadily climbing. We know that obesity leads to other, more inherently dangerous illnesses, ranging from diabetes to heart disease. Obesity, then, really does kill, albeit indirectly. There have always been obese people, just not so many. Now, the question is how to help them.

Detailed Information on Pneumonia

Pneumonia is an inflammatory illness of the lung. Currently, over 3 million people develop pneumonia each year in the United States. It usually caused by infection with bacteria, viruses, fungi or other organisms. Pneumonia is a particular concern for older adults and people with chronic illnesses or impaired immune systems, but it can also strike young, healthy people. Having a long-term, or chronic, disease like asthma, heart disease, cancer, or diabetes also makes you more likely to get pneumonia. People most at risk are older than 65 or younger than 2 years of age, or already have health problems. Herpes simplex virus is a rare cause of pneumonia except in newborns. People with immune system problems are also at risk of pneumonia caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV).

People with infectious pneumonia often have a cough producing greenish or yellow sputum and a high fever that may be conducted by shaking chills. Shortness of breath is also common. People with pneumonia may cough up blood, experience headaches, or develop sweaty and clammy skin. Other possible symptoms are loss of appetite, fatigue, blueness of the skin, nausea, vomiting, mood swings, and joint pains or muscle aches. In some people, particularly the elderly and those who are debilitated, bacterial pneumonia may follow influenza or even a common cold. People with weak immune systems at greatest risk of pneumonia. Sometimes pneumonia can lead to additional complications. Complications are more frequently associated with bacterial pneumonia than with viral pneumonia.

Pneumonia can be treated with oral antibiotics given to your child at home. Steroid medications may be used to reduce wheezing. Control your fever with aspirin or acetaminophen. Do not give aspirin to children. The best preventive measures include washing your hands frequently, not smoking, and wearing a mask when cleaning dusty or moldy areas. There are vaccines to prevent infections by viruses or bacteria that cause some types of pneumonia. Vaccines are now also given against the pneumococcus organism (PCV), a common cause of bacterial pneumonia. Antiviral medication is now available, too, and can be used to prevent some types of viral pneumonia or to make symptoms less severe. Drink plenty of fluids to help loosen secretions and bring up phlegm.

Pneumonia Treatment and Prevention Tips

1. Steroid medications may be used to reduce wheezing.

2. Vaccines are now also given against the pneumococcus organism (PCV).

3. Drink plenty of fluids to help loosen secretions and bring up phlegm.

4. If your child has chest pain, try a heating pad or warm compress on the chest area.

5. Control your fever with aspirin or acetaminophen. Do not give aspirin to children.

6. Erythromycin (eg Erythroped), by mouth. Given if allergic to penicillin.

Pupps Rash – Extreme Itchiness During Pregnancy With Red Marks

A pupps rash is shorthand for pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy. You may have been itchy during pregnancy due to hormonal changes, skin stretching, heat and dry skin. However, the extreme itchiness of the pupp rash puts it in a class of it’s own. The rash can take the form of red pimple bumps, pink patches and may be mistaken as a hives reaction to foods.ingested. The disruption in sleeping is a main complaint of women suffering from this. There are plenty of challenges for sleeping with a growing baby inside you and adding an itchy rash to the mix just doesn’t seem fair.

Fortunately, the rash will not harm the baby and subsides after delivery of the child for most women. It is very uncomfortable and the usual recommendations are topical itch creams and histamine blockers to assist with sleep. Be aware that if blisters start to develop, it may be pemphigoid gestationis which is more serious and needs to be discussed with a doctor. For pupps, work on stress reduction techniques to calm your mind. Tell yourself that it is not life threatening and you and your baby will be find. Keep this as your main priority and use it calm yourself.

There have been reports of non-traditional alternatives being useful for pupps rashes and I will list some that are mentioned. Acupuncture has been discussed in several womens forums and there have been women who found this helpful in resolving the itching and rash. Pine tar soap externally and dandelion root internally was also recommended. In terms of homeopathic remedies for pupps, Apis Mellifica was cited by a few women participating in a pregnancy thread as helpful for them. Any recommendation needs to be discussed with your doctor and evaluated for safety. Using cold water compresses and taking oatmeal baths will give you temporary relief. Remember that your child will be a wonderful presence in your life and keep your focus on this to get yourself through the discomfort.

Possible Reasons For Left Side And Breast Pain

Pain in the left side of the body can be a sign of inflammation in one of the organ located there. While we think about pain in one’s breast of woman, the disease of breast cancer comes to mind, it does not choose the side it grows on. If pain is felt in the left side of the breast, it may be signify something else other than cancer.

The left side of the body has organs such as the lower end of the heart, the left lung, the stomach, part of the liver, the pancreas, the adrenal glands, spleen, parts of small and large intestines, left kidney and left side of reproductive organs, which are the left ovary and the left fallopian tube with part of the uterus in women and left testicle in men.

Pain in the left side will never point to appendicitis unless a person has situs inversus totalis. It means that it could be inflammation of the stomach, left lung, spleen, left kidney, ovary or the left side of the intestines.

Lower end of the heart is located on the left side of our chest. The heart beats making a diastolic pressure pumping blood from the lowest part. This is the reason; heart beat is always sensed on the left breast. Acid reflux is one cause feeling pain in the left breast, it most known as heartburn. It gives a painful burning sensation in the esophagus which is just below our breastbone. This burning sensation can rise upwards to the throat, neck or jaw. A major symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease is heartburn. Acid reflux is also identified as one of the causes of chronic cough and may even imitate asthma.

Pain in the left side of the body can be because of pancreatitis, stomach ulcer or ovulation pain. Pancreatitis is a common health problem having two types which are acute and chronic. In acute pancreatitis, the pain is sharp, short-lived and mostly severe. The pain can spread to the back or below the left shoulder blade. It is mainly caused by alcoholism, gallstones and gallbladder disease. On the other hand, chronic pancreatitis is a result of extended alcohol abuse.

Heartburn does not affect the heart in any way despite its name. This name is given because of the reason that the burning sensation is felt more intensely right where the heart should be. However, this pain is just referred from the actual location which is at the entrance to the stomach. Alternative treatments of heartburn do not require intake of drugs or restrictive diet but raising one’s sleeping bed at a slight angle so that the head is raised slightly higher than the feet. This angle prevents gastric acid from rising into the esophagus and causing the pain.

Pain in the left side can also be a sign of stomach ulcer. The stomach may have a hole in the lining of or the duodenum. Usual common symptoms of peptic ulcer are severe burning pain and discomfort in the abdominal area, nausea, vomiting food or blood and belching. Gastric ulcer creates pain that is usually experienced shortly after meals, while in duodenal ulcer gives pain that is experienced between meals or when the stomach is empty. The pain decreases by taking antacids. Pain is generated from the ovulation of women when they do it once a month. This pain is called ovulation pain and it is a lower-abdominal pain. If pain increases then it is always better to go to the doctor and have a complete check-up.

Oily Skin – Natural Tanning Oil

You may be doing what you can to put a stop to oily skin; exfoliating, cleansing, the whole nine yards. Yet your oil glands still produce too much sebum and all that oil can occasionally drive you bonkers. However, there are some good sides to having oily skin. True, these good things are few and far in between, and do not do much in the ways of knocking out all the negative impacts oily skin can have, but you do have to take what you can get, right?

One of the better benefits to having oily skin comes in the form of tanning. When you have oily skin and prefer to go outside and soak up some rays of the sun, you can be sure to look forward to a nice, even tan. The oil on your skin keeps it well lubricated and helps to even out the sunlight shining down over your skin. This is a pleasure that people with dry skin are not so fortunate to have.

However, you must remember that just because you can receive a nice, even tan because you have oily skin, that does not mean you are less susceptible to sun damage, sunburns, or skin cancer. The natural oil the skin produces are only meant to protect your skin from so much damage, and is not meant to halt all the UV rays sunlight brings down upon you. Your natural oil is meant as a moisturizer, not as a protective sunscreen. This is why if you choose to go outside, or even to use a tanning bed, you should look into finding a good sunscreen.

As you already have oily skin, you do not want to burden your skin with more oils from sunscreen. Important to remember is that there is a large difference between tanning oils and sunscreen. Tanning oils are meant to help you brown, but most of them do not offer protection from UV rays. If there is no SPF number on it, count it out. It can be difficult to find a sunscreen that will not add to your oily skin problem. After all, it would only behoove you to buy a sunscreen, put it on your body, and then discover later that it has only helped to clog your pores, aiding in a new acne outbreak, or has simply made your skin look and feel even oilier.

Easy ways to avoid this would be to avoid lounging outside in the sun altogether, or at least as little as possible. Yet you still want your beautiful bronze tan, correct? The answer is simple; buy a self-tanning product. A spray or cream can be just what you need to get that been in the sun for hours look without actually having to be in the sun for hours. Companies have been working hard and getting better and better at getting the right colors for instant tanning products, so you do not have to worry as much about winding up orange as you might have several years ago.

If you truly wish to lie out in the sun and take advantage of the even tan your oily skin can offer you, then you should look into appropriate sunscreens to help keep your skin safe from too much damage and the development of skin cancer. You will most likely have to shop around, looking for sunscreens that are specifically made for oily skin. You can even go to online forums where the discussion is all about oily skin and ask members what some good options may be. Or you can check with your dermatologist to see if he or she has any good products in mind.

Whichever option you decide to use, always be sure to take good care of your skin so it remains strong and healthy for you in the future.

Olive Oil Skin Treatment For Nail Fungus

It has been proven that Olive Skin Oil Treatment in conjunction with other natural products can help heal and cure Nail fungus.

Introduction to nail fungus:

– Nail fungus is fungal infection that gets under the nails of fingers and toes.
– It's medical team is "Onychomycosis".
– The fungal causes the nails to thicken and turn yellow.
– Infected nails look dark and crumpled.
– The breeding ground for nail fungus is warm, dark and damp places like inside the shoes and socks.

It begins by a white or yellow spot on the nails and spreads gradually under the nail bed, where it becomes harder to treat. The nails start to turn yellow and ridged and starts to flake around the edges.

The cause of this infection has also to do with age. The older we get it becomes more common to attract nail fungus because of poorer blood circulation and more exposure to the environment. Also with age our nails become thicker and grow slower which adds to the risks of contracting infection.

This infection is most common on the toenails because the foot spends more time in dark and moist places like in shoes. Also the feet are prone to contract this disease around public place like showers, locker rooms and pools.

People who spend lots of time with their hands in water and damp gloves are also prone to finger nail fungal infections. Also salons that do not disinfect their tools can cause an epidemic of this infection.

It is very easy to spread from one customer to another if the tools are not sterilized between clients. Your feet are also at risk when receiving a pedicure. It can be attracted by soaking your feet in a basin that has not been properly cleaned from previous customers that may have this infection.

Also exposure to unclean public places and salons may cause another fungal infection called "Athlete's Foot.

Like all contracting infection, prevention is the best method. To avoid contraction there are some suggestions:

– Because nail fungus breeds in dark and damp places, keep your hand and feet as dry as possible.
– Change your shoes and socks after training or exercise because your feet tend to sweat more.
– Have an extra pair of sock handy, so if your sock get wet you can change them for dry ones.
– Avoid tight shoes.
– Try to avoid walking bare foot and wear shower sandals in public places like showers, pools and locker rooms.

Those who are at risk are people who:

– Perspire a lot especially hand and feet
– Already have skin condition like Psoriasis or Eczema
– Wear tight shoes
– Have athlete's foot
– Do not allow feet to breath
– Walk barefoot in public showers, pools and locker rooms
– Have nail injuries
– Have poor circulation
– Have poor immune system
– Have diabetes

Treatment of nail fungus should begin as early as one notices signs of discoloration:

– If the nail has turned yellow, brown, grey or black
– If there is the appearance of fragments under the nail
– If a bad odour is present
– And if the surroundings of the infected area hurts

In the treatment of this ailment one should consult his or her doctor to determine the best treatment for it.

There are also many home remedies that have proven affects and can totally cure of the fungal. Some of the few home remedies includes an Olive Oil Skin Treatment mixed with other natural ingredients, such as Tea Tree Oil.

While the Olive Oil in itself will not cure the bacteria, it plays an essential role in the overall treatment, it will help soften the cuticles and nails, prevent dryness and cracking. Allergy Sufferers and Restless Leg Syndrome

Beware Allergy Sufferers with Restless Leg Syndrome:

I have to admit, the first time I saw a commercial for restless leg syndrome, my first thought, was "what are they going to come up with next to push a medication"? I remember making fun of the commercial later that day with my friends, and I was shut up very quickly, when one of them perked up with a funny look on her face and said "I have that".

Embarrassed, I tried to back pedal and offer my sympathies, but truthfully, she was a bit of a hypochondriac, so I still did not put that much stock in it. Well, it turns out, that Restless Leg Syndrome is quite real, so much so in fact, that it may affect as many as 12 million Americans.

So What Does RLS Have To Do With My Allergies?

Johns Hopkins Researchers found that some sleep inducing allergy medicines significantly worsen Restless Leg Syndrome and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has discovered a possible cause. The reason they believe is "Histamine Receptors". Some cells contain protein which is found on its surface and are triggered by histamine. When these cells are activated these histamine receptors will stimulate sleeplessness.

JHU conducted a test on 12 patients suffering from restless leg syndrome by giving them either a true sedative, or diphenhydramine an ingredient in many allergy medications used to cause drowsiness. The study showed that the sedatives had little to no effect on the patients with RLS, but the diphenhydramine made the RLS as much as three to four times worse. Five out of Six Patients in the study showed elevated numbers of these histamine receptor proteins, an incredible percentage I think.

My All Natural Allergy Nasal Spray Would not Get In the Way

I found this study so interesting and it makes me wonder what other ailments are affected by un-natural ingredients in allergy and other medications. What else interferes or worsens symptoms when you're sick and un-well? I am a firm believer in all natural medicine. I do not oppose traditional medicines but I like to look for the alternatives first. Fortunately, I do not suffer from Restless Leg Syndrome and my apologies go out to my friend Lisa and anyone else who does. It is real and it's quite uncomfortable from what I've read.

I do however, suffer from allergies and sinusitis, and I use Sinol all natural nasal spray made with 100% all natural ingredients. Sinol has no side effects and it's incredibly fast and effective and never interferes with any of my other medications. I would recommend it to anyone who suffers from Restless Leg Syndrome or to anyone who needs allergy medication and takes multiple medications and worries about drug interactions. No matter what you suffer from, I always recommend that you do research for a natural choice when you can and always consult with your physician when trying new medications.

Acute Bronchitis

Acute bronchitis is very common among people with respiratory conditions. This type of bronchitis can occur in anyone, at any age. Acute bronchitis usually accompanies flu or cold and in most cases it doesn’t need medical treatment. When acute bronchitis is caused by viruses, the illness can clear on itself within a few days. However, more serious forms of acute bronchitis may require specific medical treatment.

Acute bronchitis refers to inflammation of the bronchial mucosal membranes, triggered by various external irritant or infectious agents. Due to prolonged exposure to irritants, pollutants or due to infection with viruses or bacteria, the bronchial region becomes inflamed, resulting in overproduction and expectoration of mucus.

Most symptoms of acute bronchitis are outwardly visible. The disease generates symptoms such as mucus-producing cough, chest pain and discomfort (intensifying with deep breaths), wheezing, difficult, shallow and accelerated breathing. Sometimes, these manifestations of acute bronchitis can be accompanied by mild or moderate fever.

Most acute bronchitis is usually caused by a viral infection and can be spread through person-to-person contact either directly or indirectly. This means that if you are a caregiver of someone who has bronchitis, you are at risk of contracting the illness yourself.

When you catch a cold or the flu and your respiratory system becomes ill, this is the starting point for acute bronchitis. The infection then travels into your airways, through your throat. A good thing is that acute bronchitis does not last as long as pneumonia does. Another thing for you to know is that acute bronchitis is usually caused by some viruses, but you can get this disease because of a bacteria as well.

Antibiotics can also be prescribed to you by your doctor, but only if the case of acute bronchitis that you have is caused by a bacteria. If you are given such a treatment involving antibiotics, make sure that you take them exactly as the doctor prescribed them, if you want to kill the bacteria.

If your bronchial tubes thicken, you are now blessed with acute bronchitis. Smokers often get this disease. I am sure you have heard a smoker constantly clearing their throats or hacking away for no apparent reason. It is a good possibility that they have acute bronchitis.

Gingseng ‘s effectiveness in improving parameters of erectile function such as duration and rigidity of erection have been demonstrated in many clinical studies. Well documented adverse effects of ginseng include dermatitis and gastrointestinal disturbances. Gingseng products are therefore contraindicated in patients with acute bronchitis and inflammatory disease.

Viral and bacterial infections normally cause acute bronchitis which is normally a relatively mild inflammation. Sometimes irritation from environmental fumes such as tobacco smoke, acid and solvent fumes can also cause acute bronchitis. Symptoms normally happen in the winter months and follow on from a cold.

While acute bronchitis usually clears on itself within a few days, chronic bronchitis can last for months. Chronic bronchitis is an infectious disease and needs ongoing medical treatment with antibiotics. If the medical treatment is prematurely interrupted, the illness reoccurs and can lead to complications.

In some viral forms of acute bronchitis, medical treatment isn’t required at all, as the illness clears on itself in a few weeks. Even if the illness is caused by bacteria, bronchitis treatments with antibiotics can cause a lot of harm to the organism if they are administered continuously.

Depression – Medications for Effective Treatment

Medications to curb, treat and cure depression are widely available on the market, these days. These medications are known as antidepressant medications.

Depression does not occur to a specific type of individual. It can strike anyone, anytime and anywhere. However, the treatment for depression is very effective and in almost 80 per cent of identified cases the disease is cured when the treatment is given.

There are two main approaches when it comes to providing treatment to the patient of depression; psychotherapy and medications. Antidepressants medications are often used to make the psychotherapy treatment more effective for certain people.

If a person is depressed to a great extent and unable to talk, it is impossible for that person to get benefit from counseling or even psychotherapy. The right kind of medication can always improve symptoms and help the person respond in a great way.

Here are some of the most prevalent medications available for depression. Most of the treatment options mentioned below are widely available. You will not have any problems finding any of these medications or treatments through your doctor.

A) Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors or SSRIs

B) Tricyclics

C) Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors or MAOIs

The SSRIs are said to affect neurotransmitters such as norephinephrine or dopamine. These medicines do not give out much side effects.

Most of the time, the doctor will try out a huge variety of antidepressants prior to finding the medications or even combination of certain medications most effective for the patient. There are times when the doctor feels that a particular dosage must be increased in order to be really effective. You should focus on taking antidepressant medications on a regular basis for as many as about eight weeks prior to the effect starts on your body.

Most often, patients are tempted in order to step the medication. They are really keen on stopping the medications as soon as possible.

There are several reasons for this. Most of the time, they think that the medication is not working at all. The other is that they believe it has already worked a lot to exterminate the problem totally.

As soon as the individual starts feeling better, it is vital to continue the medication for about four to nine months in order to prevent recurrence of the condition.

However, there are also certain medications that should be discontinued gradually. This is usually done to allow the body time to adjust.

People with condition such as biopolar disorder or chronic major depression, medicines need to be maintained for an indefinite period of time.

Most people are under a notion that antidepressant drugs are habit forming. However, this is not the condition. It is extremely necessary for the person to monitor the exact dosage of these medications to be taken in order to benefit in a good manner. It is the duty of doctor to keep tabs on the dosage and the effectiveness on a regular basis.

Some people are quite benefited from MAO inhibitors. These people need to keep themselves away from certain foods with high levels of tyramine including a variety of cheeses, pickles and wines. People taking MAO inhibitors are also not allowed to take certain medications such as decongestants.

Overall, taking antidepressant medications is going to benefit you a lot. Important is to follow the subscription and advice from your medical expert.

Emetophobia – Definition and Causes

Emetophobia comes from the greek word “emesis” which means “an act of vomiting” with the suffix attach – phobia meaning an illogical fear of an object or situation. Emetophobia is an irritional fear of vomiting, or seeing someone else vomiting. Emetophobia may include individuals with an intense fear of feeling nauseous or seeing vomit.

Emetophobia is the fifth commonest phobia but ironically there is limited number of studies regarding the phobia and due to this no explicit treatment can be said to be cure of the phobia. Many factors can lead to this phobia in individuals. Emetophobia is not limited to any age group, there are cases of emetophobia present in (childhood) and adolescence, as well as adulthood though it is more prevalent among young adults.

Persons that suffered severe bouts of vomiting or witnessed, over time, severe vomiting in others-maybe due to pregnancy or illness-as children become (emetophobics). Persons that have undergone gastrointestinal surgery have been known to develop this phobia. Children with a history of self stimulatory vomiting have also falling victims. Some cases of emetophobia have been attributed to mental disorder.

According to a study conducted by Dr. Angela L. Davidson, she concluded through various survey that people suffeing from emetophobia are more likely to have an internal locus of control pertaining to their everyday life. ” ‘A locus of control is an individual’s perception of where control comes from. Having an internal locus of control means that an individual perceives that they have their own control over a situation whereas an external locus of control means that an individual perceives that some things are out of their control. She explains how this phobia is created through the locus of control by stating’.
