Food can normally last for two hours at room temperature, but
that is decreased to one hour in warm weather. Cold food (potato
salad, sandwiches etc.) should stay in the fridge until ready to
serve. If the food must travel, be certain to use ice or

sure warm food is wrapped and insulated.

When the food is no longer being eaten it should be returned to
the ice box or insulated carrier. Food should remain hot or cold
for as long as it is being served and then refrigerated in clean,

a couple hours it is best to throw it out.

Some of these factors include emotional and physical stresses, improper food combinations and choices, physical trauma, or seasonal and weather changes. The aim is to understand the nature and structure of disorder, so we can re-establish order to gain control over our health and well being.

The science of understanding our constitution is the science of tridosha. Tridosha defines the three fundamental doshas or principles that govern the function of our bodies on the physical, mental, and emotional levels. Each individual has a unique balance of all three of these energies. These principles can be related to the basic biology of the body.

Energy is required to create movement so that fluids and nutrients get to the cells, enabling the body to function. Energy is also necessary to metabolize the nutrients in the cells and is utilized to lubricate and maintain cellular structure. Vata is the energy of movement; pitta is the energy of transformation, digestion or metabolism; and kapha is the energy of lubrication and structure. Everyone has the qualities of vata, pitta and kapha, but one is usually primary or predominant, one is secondary and the third is usually the least predominant.

Vata is the subtle energy associated with movement. It governs respiration, circulation, and elimination, as well as the pulsation of the heart and motor neuron impulses. Vata is very much like the wind –it is light, cool, dry and mobile. People with a vata nature experience more of these qualities. Their bodies tend to be light, their bones thin, and their skin and hair dry. They often move and speak quickly. They tend to be talkative, enthusiastic, creative, flexible, and energetic. When aggravated, vata can cause confusion, insomnia, flatulence, constipation, weight loss, tremors, spasms, asthma, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, as well as many neurological and immunological problems.

Pitta represents the fire element in the body. It governs digestion, absorption, assimilation, nutrition, metabolism, and body temperature. Pitta tends to be hot, sharp, and penetrating. It is also somewhat volatile and oily. People with a pitta nature reflect these qualities. They tend to feel warm, have somewhat oily skin, penetrating eyes, and sharp features. They tend to have moderate weight and good musculature. They tend to be highly focused, competitive, capable, courageous, energetic, and clear communicators who get right to the point. They can however become overly intense and speak with a sharp tongue. Pitta disorders include diarrhea, infections, hyperacidity, ulcers, skin eruptions, chronic fatigue, Crohn’s disease, colitis, liver, spleen, and blood ailments, as well as numerous inflammatory problems.

Kapha is the energy that forms the body’s structure and provides the cohesion that holds the cells together. Kapha supplies the water for all bodily parts and systems. It lubricates joints, moisturizes the skin, and maintains immunity. Kapha tends to be cool, moist, stable, and heavy. In the body these qualities manifest as dense, heavy bones; lustrous, supple skin; low metabolism and large, stocky frames. In addition, those with a kapha nature tend to feel cool. The heavy, stable nature of kapha reflects in a stable personality, not prone to quick fluctuations. When out of balance, kapha individuals are prone to gaining weight and tend to accumulate mucous. Kapha can also cause obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, depression, edema, asthma, tumors, and a variety of congestive problems.

Ayurveda also states that like increases like. For example, the summer has attributes similar to those of pitta –hot, liquid, light, mobile, and penetrating. Therefore, in the summer pitta in the body tends to be increased. Vata is light, subtle, dry, mobile, rough, and cold. So in the fall, which also exhibits these attributes, vata will tend to be increased in the body. Kapha is liquid, heavy, cold, sticky, and cloudy. In the winter, when these characteristics predominate in the external environment, internal kapha tends to be increased. The constitution of an individual is a dynamic force, and vata, pitta, and kapha are dynamic energies that will change and be affected by the environment and other factors in various ways. An Ayurvedic regime and lifestyle, along with dinacharya routines, will enable the individual to gain more awareness and control over how those factors can be diminished or nullified, so as to improve and maintain optimal health and well being.

From the time of birth until death, the body is engaged in maintaining life. Vata, pitta and kapha play an important role in the maintenance of cellular health and longevity. Kapha maintains longevity on the cellular level. Pitta governs digestion and nutrition. Vata, which is closely related to the life energy (or prana), governs all life functions. Ayurveda offers different therapies that may support the individual’s constitutional harmony at all levels, while promoting cellular rejuvenation and overall vitality and immunity. The key to optimal health is to help the body eliminate toxins and reestablish the constitutional balance of the doshas. Ayurvedic Basic Dietary Guidelines

According to the Ayurvedic principles your diet should be based upon your individual constitution (the three doshas or constitutions are: Vata, Pitta and Kapha). In the Ayurvedic literature there are several types of nutritional disorders:

1. Quantitative deficiency: insufficient food leading to under-nutrition or even starvation.

The above mentioned nutritional disorders are connected to the strength of “gastric fire” or agni. Your gastric fire can be disturbed by an excess of vata dosha causing irregular appetite, indigestion and gases. The pitta dosha is responsible for an agni disorder resulting in hyperacidity, heartburn, hyper-metabolism and hypo glycaemia. An excess of kapha dosha can lead to slow metabolism, allergies and overweight. The “ideal” agni is a result of balanced tri-dosha, so a person having a balanced gastric fire can eat almost any type of food, and digestion, absorption and elimination of food are normal.

But, there is another important factor in food digestion and that is food combination. According to Ayurveda every food has its own taste, a healing or cooling energy to it and a post-digestive effect. So mixing different food tastes, energies or post-digestive effects can result in bad digestion (because agni slows down) and production of toxins.

According to Ayurveda one should take fruits, vegetables, starches, proteins and fats separately taking in consideration their constitution and the particular time of the day.

As for the influence of foods on the tri-dosha the principles are as follows:

– Pitta increases with foods that are sour and pungent.

– Kapha aggravates with milk products.

– Vata is over-stimulated by beans, dry fruits, astringent and bitter substances.

In Ayurvedic literature is suggested that you can chew 1/2 teaspoon of fresh ginger before each meal to stimulate appetite and digestion, while you should avoid drinking cold or icy water during or after the meal because it slows your gastric juices. It is suggested that you take small sips of warm water (or at room temperature) during the meals. You can end your meal with a cup of lassi (you blend 4 teaspoons of yogurt with 2 pinches of ginger and cumin powder in a cup of water).

When eating, one third of your stomach should be filled with food, one third with liquid and one third should be empty, in order to allow a proper digestion.

Here are some basic guidelines you should follow in order to avoid digestive problems. These guidelines should be followed depending on your lifestyle, type of activity and seasons. For example most people need to eat a more consistent breakfast during wintertime. During the change of seasons one is exposed more to have digestive problems (and to various illnesses) so the following guideline are especially recommended in that period.

Here are some basic rules:

– in the morning drink one or two glasses of water (at room temperature) with some drops of lemon juice,

– try to eat just fruits until noon, and wait at least 30 minutes before eating any other foods,

– eat your meals always at the same time (difference of 30-60 minutes is tolerated),

– drink only pure spring water at room temperature,

– eat mostly cooked food,

– do not eat after 7 pm (fruit, salad and soup is allowed),

– 20 minutes before your meal eat some fresh ginger with warm water,

– avoid drinking at least 2 hours after eating, you should drink in small sips during the meal,

– you should not eat bananas, cottage cheese, yogurt and other dairy products after dusk,

– when you are stressed, tense, nervous or tired you should not eat,

– when you are ill if you eat you feed the illness, so avoid eating during illness,

– avoid going to sleep after meals.

Here are some basic Ayurvedic rules when combining food:

– Do not mix milk or yogurt with sour or citrus fruits,

– Avoid eating fruits with potatoes or other starchy foods, because fructose and starch are digested in different times (fructose quickly while starch is digested more slowly) resulting in bad digestion of sugar.

– You should not cook honey. Honey digests slowly when cooked. Uncooked honey is nectar while cooked honey is poison.

– Do not mix meat protein and milk protein together. Meat has heating energy while milk is cooling so they counteract one another, disturbing the digestion.

– Melons and grains are not good together, because of different digestion times. Melons should be eaten alone.

– Milk and melons should not be combined. Both are cooling, but milk is laxative and melon is diuretic, and milk requires more time for digestion. Moreover milk curdles in the stomach. That is why you should not combine milk with sour fruits, yogurt, cheese, sour cream and fish.

A swelling in the limbs resulting from the irregular increase of fluids due to the dysfunction of the lymphatic system is known as lymphedema. Pioglitazone is widely used for glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, but evidence is mixed regarding the influence of medications of this class on cardiovascular outcomes. A database containing individual patient-level time-to-event data collected during pioglitazone clinical trials was transferred from the drug’s manufacturer for independent analysis. Study drug treatment duration ranged from 4 months to 3.5 years. Death, myocardial infarction, or stroke occurred in 375 of 8554 patients (4.4%) receiving pioglitazone and 450 of 7836 patients (5.7%) receiving control therapy (hazard ratio [HR], 0.82; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.72-0.94; P = .005). Progressive separation of time-to-event curves became apparent after approximately 1 year of therapy. Individual components of the primary end point were all reduced by a similar magnitude with pioglitazone treatment, with HRs ranging from 0.80 to 0.92. Serious heart failure was reported in 200 (2.3%) of the pioglitazone-treated patients and 139 (1.8%) of the control patients (HR, 1.41; 95% CI, 1.14-1.76; P = .002). The magnitude and direction of the favorable effect of pioglitazone on ischemic events and unfavorable effect on heart failure was homogeneous across trials of different durations, for different comparators, and for patients with or without established vascular disease. There was no evidence of heterogeneity across the trials for either end point (I2 = 0%; P = .87 for the composite end point and I2 = 0%; P = .97 for heart failure).
