Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplant & Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a serious and life-threatening illness that is associated with premature death. If one thinks of the heart as a pump, progressive damage to this pump's muscle fibers results in decreased "pump efficiency," which causes blood to, essentially, back-up within the vascular system under increased pressure. This increased back-pressure causes swelling of the entire body (edema), and particularly the lower extremitudes, the lungs, the liver, as well as within the heart itself. In more severe cases, CHF is associated with generalized weakness and substantial shortness of breath.

The American Heart Association estimates that there are already more than 5 million Americans living with CHF, and that more than 550,000 new cases of CHF are diagnosed each year. Although mortality rates associated with CHF have improved dramatically over the past 30 years, the 5-year death rate associated with clinically significant CHF still approaches 50 percent.

In adults, heart muscle fibers (cardiac myocytes) that have been damaged by chronic oxygen deprivation (myocardial ischemia) or oxygen loss (myocardial infarction) are essentially unable to regenerate themselves, and are typically replaced by scar tissue that interferees with the heart's pumping action . Now, newly published clinical research in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology appears to have pushed the existing boundaries of so-called autologous stem cell transplantation in the treatment of CHF, and may represent a major improvement towards finding an enduring treatment, if not an incident cure, for this increasingly common and disabling disease.

In this prospective interventional clinical study, 124 patients who had just experienced an acute myocardial infarction were evaluated with coronary angiograms, treadmill EKGs, 24-hour EKGs, and echocardiograms, among other cardiac studies. Half of this cohort of patient volunteers also underwent collection of their own (autologous) bone marrow cells, and injection of these bone marrow cells into the blocked coronary arteries that had caused these patients' heart attacks. Both groups of patients were matched with each other in terms of baseline cardiac function and the extent of their myocardial infarctions. All 124 patients were then closely followed, at regular intervals, for 5 years. The results of this study were rather dramatic.

Within 3 months of bone marrow cell injection, significant improvement was noted in cardiac pumping efficiency (ejection fraction) of the bone marrow cell transplant patients, when compared to the patients who did not receive autologous intracardiac bone marrow cell transfusions. Moreover, on average, the total area of ​​heart muscle death (infarction) following heart attack was 8 percent smaller in the patients who received the bone marrow cell transplants, when compared to the "control group" patients.

In the area of ​​the "infarction zone" of the heart, a very significant 31 percent increase in cardiac contractility was observed in the patients who had undergone bone marrow cell transplant, suggesting that the infused bone marrow stem cells had actually incorporated them into the infected heart muscle, and had successfully transformed them into functional cardiac myocytes. When compared to the control group patients, the patients who had undergone autologous intracardiac bone marrow cell transplantation also experienced significantly improved exercise tolerance and a reduced risk of death through the 5-year observation period within this study. Furthermore, these highly significant improvements in cardiac function continued to remain stable and durable throughout the 5-year period of post-transplant observation of these patients. As the "treatment group" patients were infused with their own bone marrow cells, there were no episodes of rejection, and no major complications were reported with this novel treatment.

This small prospect pilot study strongly suggests that autotransplantation with stem cells contained in the bone marrow can significantly reduce the risk and amount of CHF following acute myocardial infarction. Not only does this therapy appear to be clinically effective, but it appears to be associated with a very low risk of complications, and it also side-steps the ingoing ethical debate that surrounds the use of more versatile, but more controversial, fetal stem cells .

Based upon the rather remarkable finds of this small clinical study, much larger multi-institution, prospective, randomized, controlled studies of autologous intracardiac bone marrow cell transplantation, following acute myocardial infarction, need to be performed. Fortunately, several such studies are already underway in the United States and Europe. I look forward to the long-term results of such studies, as I believe that they may have the potential to radically transform the management of coronary artery disease and acute myocardial infarction, and offer the best and most practical hope of reducing both the incidence of CHF and the mortality rate associated with CHF.

According to the National Pest Management Association, there are approximately 33 different kinds of bacteria, six kinds of parasitic worms, and at least seven other kinds of human pathogens carried by cockroaches. Consider the fact that cockroaches walk through sewage and decaying matter. They transmit the bacteria into your home. In addition, roaches can be an allergen for allergy sufferers.

They have been found to carry the pathogens that cause tuberculosis, cholera, dysentery, and typhoid; as well as 28 other bacteria (like salmonella). Because of they way they live, they can carry just about any bacteria or disease that lives on decaying organic matter or sewage.

Salmonella

With salmonella, you will get diarrhea, abdominal cramping, fever, and nausea. It is most often found in animal products like beef, poultry, milk, or eggs. Once way to avoid salmonella is to avoid cross contamination. For example, many products with salmonella are thoroughly cooked and the person does not get infected.

What roaches do is walk all over uncooked decaying matter. In essence, they spread the germs around. If salmonella gets into your home, the roaches can transmit it onto areas that would not otherwise have it.

Roaches love dark damp places. What grows in these damp places is mold. Many roaches actually die from mold. What happens is the roach gets real moldy and then sheds the exoskeleton. Fibroid Tumour – Powerful Natural Remedies Revealed!

Among the most painful and dangerous of female disorders is the fibroid tumour of the uterus. In part, the danger is psychological rather than physical. The increased incidence of cancer together with a wide publicity campaign has made the public highly cancer-conscious. For this reason, the discovery of almost any tumour on the body will generally strike terror into the heart of the strongest person. Thus the relatively common fibroid tumour which attacks the uterus is often mistaken for a malignant tumour (cancer), and the resultant shock is almost as destructive as the growth itself.

Since the possibility of cancer always exists where an unnatural growth is discovered, it is important that the patient be immediately examined. As the tumour develops the uterus becomes knobby and enlarged. Pressure of the growth upon the bladder may bring pain and increased urination. Conversely, fibroid tumours often induce constipation through pressure upon the rectum. Haemorrhage is a frequent tumour warning. The existence of a fibroid tumour within the uterus is often a cause of natural abortion (miscarriage).

Such growths were treated through natural baths, diet, wet wraps and therapeutic gymnastics. A daily lukewarm (77° to 82°) bath was prescribed with cold compresses to be applied to the vagina at bedtime. Sexual intercourse and other activities which might aggravate the condition were strictly forbidden. As in most instances, my regimen for fibroid tumours also involved the Return to Nature Diet. A half pack (abdomen to feet) was applied for one hour each day and thigh and spinal douches (pressure baths) were prescribed three times weekly.

Exercises (therapeutic gymnastics) were provided for the patient, though sports which provided entertainment and a lift to the morale were always preferred to ordinary exercise.

Thus, while the bicycle exercise (in which the patient lies upon her back and lifts the body from the waist, propelling the legs as though bicycling) proved effective in treating tumours of the uterus, actual bicycling was encouraged. In like manner, if the patient acknowledged a fondness for rowing, this sport was prescribed rather than a similar exercise such as sit-ups (in which the patient lies flat, hands locked behind head, and lifts and lowers the body from waist to head without shifting the feet).

Other exercises recommended were trunk turning (from an upright position, hands behind head, the body is twisted from extreme right to extreme left and back again without moving the feet); full knee bending, toe touching and the scissors exercise (from prone position raise legs and then move slowly apart and together as though a scissors).

Since fibroid tumours may exist for many years without making themselves known to the patient, and since tumours of the uterus are particularly common among women at the menopause (change of life), it would seem a wise precaution if every woman adopted much of this programme from the age of forty onwards.

What Causes Bronchitis?

Bronchitis is as a result of the inflammation of the large bronchi. This inflammation is caused by the presence of harmful pathogens. Causes of bronchitis different in individual cases. The symptoms are all the same. These include fever, fatigue, headache, expectorant cough, wheezing, shortness of breath and occasional chest pains. According to what causes bronchitis, the treatment is different.

The main causes of bronchitis are viral and bacteria pathogens. Viral pathogens include adenoviridae virus, influenza and rhino virus. The adenoviridae virus can also cause pains in the abdomen. 4. You will definitely want to buy a jacket with a hood. In most cases, anyway. A hood can make sure your head and face stays warm and dry. If you can not keep your head warm, it does not matter what temperature your body is. A cold head and face is something to avoid at all times.

5. Have a look at the sleeve construction. When you buy a ski jacket that has elastic sleeves, you will have high maneuverability during your skiing activities. Make sure the cuffs are on the outer side for maximum comfort around the wrists.

6. A good jacket has to have a few pockets here and there for you to place your beloveds in. Most people these days want to carry at least a wallet and a cell phone with them. The pockets have to open and close easily while at the same being able to hold items in various sizes without those items bouncing around while skiing.

7. The jacket must be water proof. No surprise there! If moisture is able to soak through the jacket, it will eventually get on your body. When this happens, you will cool down for sure. And this would effectively render the ski jacket completely useless.

The range of diseases, parasites and genetic conditions that dogs can succumb to is vast, so it's important to keep up your pet's vaccines, stick to regular check-ups and also know what to look for.

1. Canine Distemper Virus (CDV)

CDV attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal and central nervous systems. The disease is contracted through contact with other infected dogs and can be fatal to both young and old dogs. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, fever, shivering, redness around the eyes, loss of appetite, weight loss, seizures, thickened footpads, cough and a discharge from the nose. 2. Canine Adenovirus or Infectious Canine Hepatitis (ICH)

Infectious Canine Hepatitis (ICH) is an acute liver disease, and highly contagious. The virus is transmitted through bodily fluids like urine, eye or nose secretions. Young and old dogs can be affected by ICH, but puppies are at a higher risk. Symptoms include fever, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice and corneal edema, although a blood test is needed to make a final diagnosis. 3. Para Influenza or Tracheobronchitis (aka Kennel Cough)

The common name for Tracheobronchitis is Kennel Cough because of its propensity for spreading in close quarters, such as in a boarding kennel. It's highly contagious and attacks the dog's senior respiratory system. Like bronchitis in humans, the symptoms are coughing, snorting, hacking and sometimes fever. Kennel Cough can be treated with antibiotics or pretented through vaccination.

4. Rabies

Rabies is not just a dog disease; it will affect all mammals that are not vaccinated against the disease. Rabies directly attacks the brain and the prognosis is often deadly. This common disease can be easily transmitted through vaccination. In many states, vaccination for domestic pets is absolutely mandatory.

Why I Chose A Hip Resurfacing Instead of A Total Hip Replacement

My hip hurt, my body hurt and I needed a new hip. I had cooked hip pain for almost ten years because I just did not want "half my leg bone cut off" to get a new hip replacement. It just did not make sense to me that doctors were still sawing off a big hunk of a femur bone to replace a hip. We sent men to the moon, had nuclear power and every kind of electronic device imaginable, so why are our operations still old-fashioned?

I asked myself that question quite often. One evening while visiting our local tavern, I was telling a gentleman my feelings about total hip replacement. I am not sure how the conversation started, but perhaps I was complaining about my hip pain. To my surprise, he told me that they do not have to saw off part of your femur bone to replace a hip any more. I was shocked. I had been doing some internet searching, but had not found information about hip resurfacing yet.

He explained that he had his hip resurfaced with Dr. Schmalzried in California in 2005. With hip resurfacing, the surgeon reshapes the top of your femur bone to accept a cap that is the same size as your original bone, he explained. The cap has a small stem which is placed into a hole that is drilled in the top of the femur bone. A small amount of cement is used to hold the cap in place until new bone grows under the cap. A matching metal cup is placed in the acetabulum of your hip to provide a bearing surface for the cap on the femur bone. It becomes a perfect metal bearing which replaces your injured or arthritic hip joint.

Hip resurfacing is major surgery just as a total hip replacement is. The basic difference is that the doctor does not see off a major portion of your femur bone and drill a long hole into it to accept the long stem of a total hip replacement device.

Hip resurfacing is bone conservation. The reason that hip resurfacing is a better choice than total hip replacement for many people is that at some time in the future, you could require a revision. The actual hip devices do not wear out since they are metal, but the bone holding the hip device often deteriorates. The hip device becomes lose and very painful. A revision is then necessary to replace the old hip device. If a person starts with a hip resurfacing and at some point later in life requires a revision, then they have a complete femur bone for the surgeon to work with. If a person starts with a total hip replacement, then the doctor has to break apart the femur bone to remove the long steam of the old total hip device. The femur bone must be wired back together when the new stem is in place. Hip resurfacing allows a much easier revision later in life if it is required.

The second advantage of a hip resurfacing is that the hip device, due to it's large size, allows a person to return to any of their favorite activities without restrictions or the possibility of a dislocation. The old fashioned total hip replacement devices used a very small diameter ball as compared to size of your natural femur bone. The small size of the ball would allow a hip to dislocate easily. The size of the hip resurfacing device is matched very closely to the original size of your hip, so any movements you make are much less likely to cause a dislocation. The hip resurfacing device is acting the same way your natural hip use to function.

I was sixty-one and still felt young when I needed a hip replacement. I had always been very active during my life playing tennis, ice skating, bike riding and participating in other sports. I wanted to remain active and did not want to worry about dislocating a hip after a total hip replacement. I had sixteen dogs and often got on the floor to groom and cut nails. I needed to be as active as possible and the only solution for me was hip resurfacing.

I had my hip resurfaced with a Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, BHR, in March 2006 with Dr. De Smet in Belgium. I did not have health insurance and could not afford surgery in the United States. Dr. De Smet is one of the best hip surgeons in the world and had done over 2400 hip resurfacings when I went to him. My surgery and medical costs were $ 13,500. The complete trip for my husband and I to Belgium, including the medical costs, was about $ 17,000. I felt this was the best investment I ever made in my whole life, an investment in my own health and well being.

Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, BHR, was not FDA approved in the United States until May 2006. The BHR had been used worldwide for over nine years. Younger, active people all over the world were offered hip resurfacing instead of a total hip replacement. Over 90,000 people world wide have hip resurfacings and now I am one of them. Hip resurfacing has allowed me to be as active as possible without worrying about a dislocation. If you have hip pain and need a new hip, be sure to ask your doctor about hip resurfacing. Although the BHR is FDA approved, many doctors are not trained to do the BHR surgery. It is a more difficult surgery than a THR and requires training and experience. Luxating Patella in Dogs (Trick Knee) – Is Surgery Always Necessary?

Luxating Patella / Trick Knee / Floating Kneecap is a common medical condition among toy and miniature breeds, although larger dogs like labs may be suspect. Basically, the dog's kneecap slides out of its groove and dislocates. The dislocation causes the dog to walk straight-legged or hop / skip instead of walking normally. If you happen to see a dog with a trick knee, you will notice the strange gait.

Sometimes the dog can re-locate the kneecap back in its groove on his own. That's called Grade I patellar luxation in dogs. As the dog becomes progressively more lame, the labels progress to grade IV. A canine with grade 4 luxating patella has a permanently dislocated kneecap.

What Happens If Surgery Is Not Performed?

When the owner elects to delay surgery indefinitely, it may because a few grand is just not available for doggie surgery to deepen the groove, relocate where the patellar ligament is attached to the lower leg, and / or tighten up the patellar ligament.

According to the veterinary surgeon who repaired the Grade I luxating patella on the author's year-old pup Simon, the dog may develop arthritis or tear his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) if surgery is delayed. Arthritis can cause lameness, and an ACL tear will require surgery for extensive repairs.

Simon was born with the condition but it did not show up until he was a little older, even though he was examined by the breeder's vet and by a second vet when he arrived in his permanent home.

Other Alternatives To Surgery

There are vets who are conservative about performing surgery. For example, a holistic vet may recommend maintaining the dog's ideal weight, a special carb-free diet, or certain medications to improve mobility. If the dog's condition deteriorates instead of improving, than the holistic vet would opt for surgery.

The dog's age might factor into the recommendation. Recently a reader wrote the author that her dog, a terrier, is too old for luxating patellar surgery. The dog has been on a vet-recommended diet for 2 months and is doing so well that he succeeded in jumping on the bed, more than a 2-foot leap.

Bottom Line – Surgery is not always necessary, but the dog's age and general condition dictates what alternative therapy may be recommended.
