It's Not You, It's Your Midlife Crisis

We all go through our share of ups and downs in life. One of the most famous examples of a "down" is the male midlife crisis. Whether you believe that the midlife crisis is psychological, physical or a problem with modern society, the fact is that a large number of men must deal with this issue.

As a doctor, I know that a midlife crisis can cause not only mental and emotional struggle, but real physical symptoms that must be addressed. Some men experience fatigue, loss of energy or sexual dysfunction as they approach midlife. It is important to understand the causes and symptoms of male midlife crisis so you can face this life challenge head-on.

What is Midlife Crisis?

On the surface, the theory behind midlife crisis is easy to grasp: as we age, we become increasingly aware of our own mortality, so we start feeling or behaving differently. However, a midlife crisis is not simply about wishing we were young again. By midlife, many men feel weighted down by life's burdens, such as providing for a family and sustaining a career. In fact, men who base their identity on one area of their life, like their jobs or their virility, are more likely to experience a midlife crisis.

Another reason for midlife crisis is the realization that old expectations or fantasies about life are not going to come true. Maybe you had always envisioned yourself starting your own business, yet by midlife you finally see that your life has gone in a different direction. Sometimes, unresolved emotional issues come to the forefront at midlife and must be dealt with. If you have been avoiding your personal emotional baggage for years, it may be time to address your feelings in order to move forward.

All of this may sound purely psychological, but I assure you that a midlife crisis can also be physical in origin. Beginning in your late 20s, testosterone gradually decreases, sometimes causing decreased sex drive or erectile dysfunction. In addition, there is an increase in sex hormone binding globulin, a protein that impairs the body's ability to use testosterone.

Another piece of the puzzle is related to changes in sleep. As men move into midlife, they start to sleep more lightly, spending less time in a state of deep sleep. This can lead to weight gain, fatigue and irritability because the body is unable to make enough of the hormones required for energy and optimal functioning.

Real Solutions for Men

Feeling your age and resolving emotional issues is difficult enough without the added worry of sexual dysfunction. See your doctor to rule out other health problems that may be contributing to dysfunction. You can take action by trying many testosterone-boosting natural supplements designed to increase virility, energy and hormone levels. Look for formulas with vitamin B12, zinc, gingko biloba and ginseng. To increase blood flow, supplements containing either L-arginine and Citrulline may be useful. Other ingredients to look for are Tribulus Terrestris a sex-related hormone, and Macuna Puriens (L-Dopa) an herb derived from a Brazilian plant known to have stimulant properties.

Quality sleep is important for men undergoing the physical changes of midlife. Minerals like magnesium and herbs like passion flower extract and valerian are effective sleep aids. Other ways to encourage deep sleep are to get plenty of exercise and avoid stimulants like coffee several hours before bed.

Managing stress will help you sleep easier, as well as reduce symptoms like irritability and fatigue. A daily B-complex vitamin can reduce stress, and minerals like selenium and chromium can boost energy. St. John's Wort is a potent herb that has been shown to lessen feelings of anxiety, apathy and despair.

In addition to the natural remedies above, never underestimate the power of trying something new. If your life has always revolved around your job, learn to delegate and make time for other activities you enjoy, like sports, music or travel. Learning a new hobby or meeting new people can refresh your perspective when life seems like a hassle.

Finally, the ability to stay positive and acknowledge difficult emotions has gotten many of my patients through midlife crises. Focusing on all the things you have to look forward to can make your current problems feel far less daunting.

Chronic Pancreatitis – Non Drug Remedy

Chronic pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas that can be mainly caused by liver and gallbladder dysfunction or excessive alcohol consumption.

Difficulty eliminating bile can cause a blockage and raising the pressure in the pancreatic ducts.  Thus, usually lead to back up of pancreatic juice and predispose the pancreas to congestion and inflammation.

The pancreatic digestive enzymes, which trapped inside, start to digest their own pancreatic cells causing congestion, inflammation, pain, cysts and finally death of tissue of pancreas gland. It leads to pancreatic insufficiency with weight loss and producing bulky, greasy, foul-smelling stools with oil droplets as well.

Successful treatment of chronic pancreatitis is generally difficult, requires a team approach and practitioners of alternative medicine can be very good players in this process.

One of these approaches has been used for 250 years and has a great deal of scientificall research by European doctors. This is Karlovy Vary healing mineral water prepared from the Genuine Karlovy Vary Thermal Spring Salt

The properties of this water are completely unknown by the American public and medical professionals. Most North Americans tend to think of mineral water as something to drink either as a snack or with meals.  Yet, Karlovy Vary Healing Mineral Water is not just something to drink when thirsty.  This “magical” water contains healing properties for a variety of chronic disorders, as well as for chronic pancreatitis.

For hundreds of years, thousands Europeans with poor functioning of the pancreas or chronic pancreatitis have been drinking healing mineral water in the mineral spa. The Czech town of Karlovy Vary has been a famous international healing resort since the 1700s. Europeans call the local mineral water the “healing gift from the earth” or the “miracle mineral water.” In 1764, a special method was discovered that made it possible to distribute the water throughout the world. Czech doctors determined that the water manufactured from the genuine Karlovy Vary thermal spring salt had identical healing properties as the spring.

Positive benefits of the Karlovy Vary water are brought about by a beneficial complex composition of potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, sulfates, bicarbonates, chlorides, and a lot of trace minerals such as zinc, cobalt, selenium, lithium, copper and more.

According to European doctors, the most important action of the water is to enhance production and flow of bile and pancreatic juice, and decrease pressure inside the pancreas. Additionally, the Karlovy Vary Healing Mineral Water supplies the pancreas with minerals and bicarbonates, the main ingredients of the pancreatic juice.

The water promotes the manufacture and release of digestive hormones which regulate the digestive process in the whole gastrointestinal tract. The digestive hormones signal to the pancreas the amount of enzymes and bicarbonate that will be needed to digest protein, sugars, starches, and lipids arriving from the stomach into the duodenum.

According European doctors drinking Karlovy Vary water made from the Genuine Karlovy Vary Thermal Spring Salt alleviates pain, dyspepsia, malabsorption, and loss of fat with stool (steatorrhea).

Karlovy Vary water made from the Genuine Karlovy Vary Thermal Spring Salt is a safe and effective non-drug alternative remedy for chronic pancreatitis.

Bath Salts: An Emerging Danger

Bath salts-the drug, not the perfumed crystals you put in bath water-showed up just a few years ago. The synthetic powder is sold online and in drug paraphernalia stores under a variety of names, such as "Blue Silk," "Zoom," "Cloud Nine," and "Hurricane Charlie." But do not let the fun names fool you: This drug is extremely dangerous.

What Are Bath Salts?

Bath salts are a new family of drugs that contain synthetic chemicals related to cathinone, an amphetamine-like stimulant. They typically appear as white or brown powder and are sold in small plastic or foil packages labeled "not for human consumption." People who abuse these drugs swallow, inhale, or inject them.

How Do They Affect the Brain?

Much is still unknown about the chemicals found in these drugs, but they are similar to amphetamines (such as methamphetamine) as well as to MDMA (Ecstasy). So far, research has shown that the most common chemical found in the synthetic powder, methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), works like cocaine by increasing the brain chemicals dopamine and norepinephrine, causing a feeling of euphoria and hyperactivity. However, MDPV is 10 times more potent than cocaine.

Bath salts may also raise the levels of serotonin, causing hallucinations. Mephedrone and methylone, two other chemicals often sold as bath salts, were found to raise serotonin in a way similar to MDMA.

What Are the Other Health Effects?

The synthetic chemicals in bath salts are very toxic and have been linked to increases in visits to emergency rooms and poison control centers across the country.

Abuse can cause the following physical and psychological symptoms:

  • Racing heart
  • Panic attacks
  • High blood pressure
  • Dehydration
  • Chest pains
  • Kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue
  • Hallucinations
  • Insomnia
  • Psychotic and violent behavior
  • Death

What Are We Doing To Prevent Abuse?

Bath salts users have reported that the drugs trigger intense cravings (or a compulsive urge to use the drug again) and that they are highly addictive.

In response to rising abuse rates of this drug, President Obama signed into law the Synthetic Drug Abuse Prevention Act, which bans MDPV, mephedrone, and other bath salts ingredients. However, drug manufacturers have responded by developing new versions of the drug that use ingredients that, while just as toxic, are not yet banned.

If you know someone who is abusing drugs, tell an adult or contact 1-800-662-HELP to find out how to get help for the person.

Nothing Fancy About These Preps

My oldest son is an easy going individual who is a firm believer that nothing is going to happen which would require preparations. He appears to lack the insight to see exactly what the future will hold concerning our personal liberties as well as our survival. He never has been able to get intricately involved in any sort of survival details and his level of preparedness is exceptionally low. Does that mean he is doomed when the balloon goes up and we need to rely upon our resources? Not necessarily, I would like to present the simplest preparedness program in existence.

The adult son in question resides in his own three story home with neighbors on each side of his house. He is not rich but gets along well on what he and his wife earn by working. He owns a car but it is never setup as a BOV so we may as well consider him as having no means of escaping his current environment. My goal is to establish an easy, simple and practical method to get him to prepare at least some what for any potential crisis. Here is what I have to offer.

He never was much to store up on a lot of extra food. He and his wife generally purchase enough pantry supplies to last them for approximately two weeks at the most. To start him out in the right direction I would suggest that he purchase at least 30 cans of pre-made canned foods which should not require water to be added. These quick foods could be stews, spaghettis in a can or something of a similar nature. Add to this another 30 cans of various types of vegetables and meats, such as peas, carrots, pork and beans, canned fish, canned fruit or any other types which appeal to the family. Lastly, include 30 gallons of water to this list of essentials. That concludes my suggested food supplies. It isn’t very elaborate and the problem of food fatigue may enter the picture but food in the stomach is of utmost importance and if one is hungry enough they will eat the food.

Now for providing light in an emergency we must understand that my son lives in a three story home and has two young children. Taking that into consideration, I suggest two hurricane lamps along with several battery operated flashlights. The lamps are fairly inexpensive items and can be purchased at any department store or Wal-Mart for less than $15 dollars. Add four gallons of lamp oil to that list along with batteries for the flashlights and you are ready for action. Keep in mind that batteries when used for the sole purpose of light do not last very long however they are warranted so that the family members can go from floor to floor safely as well as a means of seeing while outside the confines of the home. The lamp oil on the other hand will consume a mere ½ ounce per hour. Not bad at all.

Heating the home presents a bit of a dilemma since it is so large and occupies three floors. Granted the oil lamp will provide a small measure of heat but nowhere near what would be needed. The only alternative would be to stock up on plenty of warm clothing for each family member and lots of thick wool blankets. Open flame devices for heat are not acceptable due to fire safety reasons as well as for the carbon dioxide hazard presented.

For their sanitation needs they could obtain a five gallon plastic bucket similar to those found in cake decorating shops from bulk icing. These are generally free or at a small cost of one dollar or so. Toss in several boxes of garbage bags and enough toilet paper to handle the family’s usage. To freshen up the smell keep several bottles of dishwashing liquid nearby. For washing up after use include a bottle of waterless hand soap.

To account for minor health related issues you should include the more common over the counter items like pain killers, bandages and a small bottle of iodine. Add the kind of simple items which one would find in a first aid kit. Serious health issues which require prescription drugs should be dealt with accordingly.

No home is a fortress and security should be adequately addressed. Place a few 2×4’s in a convenient location along with some nails to secure them across the homes doors and windows. To use nail one of the boards into the floor near the base of the door. Next nail two others at 45 degrees angles across the middle section of the door or window. This naturally means keeping a few hand tools such as a hammer and screwdriver readily available. Be sure that you keep one exit clear for departure in dire emergencies.

As you can readily see these items do not involve any long term efforts to organize as they are short and to the point. For less than $150 dollars you can assemble these emergency supplies which will easily take care of several people without difficulty for at least one month. I have deliberately kept everything as simple as possible. In addition to the above suggestions try to keep a low profile and windows covered with heavy blankets at night.

Using Quotes In Your Scrapbook

Part of what differentiates a scrapbook from a photo album is the journaling. Photo albums are just that, an album with page after page of photos. A scrapbook is a book containing photos that tell a story. This story is often told through personal journaling about the photos.

Another way to help tell the story is to use quotes on your page. You can use quotes both within the layout and also as page titles.

Quotes come in several different forms. There are many websites which have pages and pages of famous quotes. Do a web search on any search engine. Often by flipping through the pages, you'll find a perfect quote that explains exactly how you felt at the time the photo was taken. Or you may find a quote that perfectly describes the events surrounding the photo on the page.

The other type of quotes are those quotes that happened during the taking of the photo. For example, I recently was on a guided tour. Several times our tour guide said something that I wrote down to use later, when creating my scrapbook. I knew that the words spoken by her were words I wanted to remember.

I have a friend who sends out a holiday newsletter each year. The newsletter is only quotes from what her family has said during the past year. It truly is one of the funniest things to read.

Sometimes you can create the quotes by using individual lettering, if the quote is short enough. Other times you'll need to find sheets of stickers with words and piece together the quote with individual words. Of course another option is to hand write the quote on pretty paper. Use a tracing tool and cut out a pretty shape on your paper to match the theme of the page and then hand write your quote. Attach the paper with the quote in the same manner you would attach an actual photo.

Listen to what others say when you are snapping photos. Very often the words spoken by others make wonderful additions to your scrapbook pages. Quoting others is not only a great way to journal about a photo, but it's also an incredible way to remember someone special in your life.

Be on the lookout for quotes and listen to what others say. Start adding these quotes to your scrapbook pages and you'll develop a new appreciation for your scrapbooks.

The Road to a Happy Healthy Liver

The first thing you should know about your liver is where its located. Your liver is just under your rib cage on the right side of your abdomen and it weighs about 3 to 4 pounds. Your liver helps you to absorb nutrients from food as well as digest it. It also helps you to get rid of any harmful toxins that are in your body. Your metabolism is also controlled by your liver and when you need energy your liver reserves sugar to use.

Your liver is like a starfish, it can regenerate itself within a few weeks. It can still regenerate even after you’ve lost most of it to disease or most of has been removed in surgery. This doesn’t mean that your liver is invincible by any means. There are many problems that can arise in your liver. Cirrhosis and liver disease are just two of the many things that can go wrong in your liver. Liver disease can be caused by alcoholism. Excessive alcohol abuse can make the liver swell with a layer of fat around it. It the fat becomes irritated it can cause alcoholic hepatitis , this damage can be reversible, unlike the damage of cirrhosis. Alcohol lowers the antioxidant levels in the liver. Alcohol has a lot of calories in it, alcoholics tend to take in more calories as alcohol rather than food that has nutrients, this causes malnutrition. So when in treatment for hepatitis or liver disease the amount of nutrient rich calories they take in can be life or death. They need at least 3000 good calories during treatment.

Fatty liver disease can be caused by obesity, diabetes, as well as alcoholism. One third of patients with fatty liver disease have high cholesterol levels or type 2 diabetes. These are majors for a heart attack. Biliary cirrhosis is from an injury to the biliary system. the livers job is to emit bile, the body uses it in the intestines for breakdown of fats from foods. Cardiac cirrhosis is when severe congestive heart failure results in a chronic liver injury that becomes inflamed and creates scar tissue. This causes the heart to have a blood back up in the major veins because it cannot handle the pressure.

Cirrhosis takes a long time to develop. Usually the only way it can be deteched is through routine blood tests, if it is caught early enough it can be treated with no guarantees of recovery. If the liver is beyond repair the only treatment that can be served is a transplant. This can only happen if the patient has been clean from alcohol in the past 6 months.

Some of the signs that there are problems with your liver are yellowish skin and eyes, abdominal pain and swelling, itching skin, dark urine, pale bowel color, chronic fatigue, nausea, and loss of appetite. If you have a few of these symptoms seeing a specialist is recommended.

To prevent and help protect your liver from problems you can drink alcohol in low amounts. More than two drinks a day for men and one for women can be enough to cause liver cirrhosis.

Using illegal drugs and even mixing them with alcohol can cause liver disease. Taking prescription drugs and non prescription drugs when they are not needed or more than the normal dosing will cause liver problems as well. There are some herbs that can be toxic too, if they are taking to frequently. Alternative Health Supplements offers some liver health products that will help to cleanse and detox your liver, doing this regularly will help keep your liver clean and healthy. Vitamin A,D, and E in very high doses can cause you issues too. One really big thing is get vaccinated for hepatitis. There are vaccinations for both hepatitis A and B. Don’t eat a lot of fatty foods, and eat lean mean. Watching your weight is a big thing. And lastly avoid contact with other people’s blood and body fluids. Hepatitis get spread this way. Using a needle someone else used, incorrectly cleaning up others’ body fluids, sharing razor blades and toothbrushes, and having unsafe sex are things that not everyone thinks will spread hepatitis.

Could Your Candida Infection Be Killing You?

You may think your Candida infection is uncomfortable, painful and downright annoying but did you know that if left untreated Candida can be potentially life threatening? If the Candida is not killed off at the root, the fungus will continue to grow spreading into the blood stream and manifesting itself in various locations throughout the body.

The transfer of Candida can result in a host of problems including rashes, sinus problems, joint and chest pain, acne, prostrate problems, irritable bowel syndrome and many more serious illnesses.

In order to multiply and take hold of your body, Candida needs an ideal environment. Like most funguses, it prefers warm and moist conditions to grow. Your digestive tract provides the perfect surroundings. The Candida organisms grow rapidly over the intestinal walls and begin to interrupt digestion and nutrient absorption. The yeasty cells attach to mucus membranes and feast on the undigested food and steal the nutrients for themselves.

Without these essential nutrients, our bodies can not perform at optimum levels. If we can not perform at our best, our immune system begins to weaken, thus giving the Candida strength to grow even faster.

As Candida grows and transfers throughout your body, it begins to produce a number of highly toxic waste substances. These toxins poison your body by infecting healthy tissue and further weakening the immune system. A weakened immune system and damaged tissues give way to damage to your organs including your lungs, kidneys, liver, gallbladder and brain.

The principal toxin produced by the fungal infection is known as Acetaldehyde and causes severe problems within our bodies. Once this toxin transforms into ethanol, it gives rise to a host of unpleasant symptoms including;

• Various yeast infections (oral, genital, skin, joint)
• Back pain,
• Bloating
• Gas
• Stomach cramps
• Constipation
• Diarrhea
• Heartburn
• Indigestion
• Sores in the mouth
• General feeling of dizziness
• Brain fog,
• Headaches
• Dental problems
• Blurry vision
• Feeling down,
• Restless legs
• Anxiety,
• Athlete's foot,
• Increased cholesterol,
• Asthma
• Sores on the anus and genital regions.

And these are the less severe complications of Candida …

The more serious issues arise when Candida becomes a chronic condition. The immune system becomes extremely weak and you become susceptible to life threatening Candida related conditions.

There is a wide variety of side effects associated with Candida overgrowth. Whilst the most commonly recognised side effects include digestive problems, headaches, skin rashes and joint aches, most people do not realise that Candida can cause extremely debilitating side effects, some of which can be fatal.

Some of the known dangerous side effects of the fungus can include;

Leaky Gut Syndrome

Once Candida is present in your blood stream, your immune system is struggling to fight it off. Candida takes from you all the nutrients it needs to feed and continue to grow. This can result in food allergies and bowel problems. Typical symptoms of a poorly functioning bowel include bloating, heartburn, gas, haemorrhoids, constipation, diarrhea and pain.

Weakening of the Immune System

If our bodies think they are under attack from a foreign body they will start to produce antibodies. Antibodies are responsible for killing off the unidentifiable bacteria or virus (antigens) in order to protect the body. Unfortunately, when the antibodies attack the antigens they also attack any healthy cells and tissues in the process.

So whilst trying to protect your body from any unknown parasites, your immune system begins to attack itself, killing off the good cells. This can lead to severe health issues due to autoimmune disorders.

Weakening the Nervous System

The toxins produced by the Candida fungus can transfer into your blood stream and begin to attack the brain. Your brain responds by producing other toxins that can result in an interference with the natural biochemical processes in the brain.

Side effects of this include difficulty sleeping, extreme mood swings, short term memory loss, panic, depression, fatigue and depression. The nervous system can become seriously compromised.

In some cases Sepsis can occur. Sepsis is a blood infection which is characterised by fast breathing and fever. Sepsis is a fatal condition.

Can Colon Hydrotherapy Help Your Kidneys Function Better

When someone mentions the idea of colon hydrotherapy, one subject will spring to mind: an enema. And, of course, that leads to the question: how can an enema help my kidneys? That’s because it’s not an enema! Colon hydrotherapy is so much more than just enemas. Primarily, it has to do with putting the right sort of things into your body to flush out the pollutants that have built up there over time.

Often times, you’ll hear doctors warn against eating too much red meat. It’s said that it can collect in the lower intestine and stay there as a breeding ground for bacteria. Well, the same is true for other organs of your body. Kidney stones, bladder infections, and other diseases can lead to serious health problems.

A good kidney cleansing can flush out toxins, dissolve kidney stones, and improve overall kidney function. Now, one little caveat here: if you’re suffering debilitating pain from kidney stones, don’t think that one quick treatment is going to get rid of them. Kidney stones are like any other malady; they take time to build up, and will take time to deal with. There are different kinds of stones. Depending on their size and composition, days or even months will be needed to get rid of them.

The first step in proper kidney health is to prevent the stones. To that end, drink lots of water, juice, tea, and eat plenty of fruit. Lemonade, juices, and herbal teas are particularly good for the kidneys. If you start showing the symptoms of a kidney stone: low back pain, pain in the kidney, and edema that is, you’re retaining a lot of water in your body, there is a simple treatment you can try. This is known as the watermelon hydrotherapy, and you may find it a bit unorthodox. First, get a few large melons, slice them up into nice bite-sized chunks, and then sit in a nice warm bath.

You’ll have to stay there the whole day, and eat as much watermelon as you can. Now, here’s the part you may not like you have to empty your bladder into the bath water, and stay in the tub the whole time! It’s one thing to do that at the beach or even a public swimming pool (come on, admit it, you’ve done it before!), but to have to do it in a bathtub and stay in it; that’s a bit much. Yet, if you can tolerate it, this hydrotherapy has been shown to dissolve kidney stones in as little as a single treatment.

Pass a Gallstone – How to Pass Your Gallstones and Pass on Gallbladder Surgery

Pass a gallstone in 24 hours or less! Most of you are probably thinking, "Yeah, right?" But before you click the 'back' button, you need to realize that most gallstones (about 85%) can be passed naturally with no surgery required.

But why is gallbladder surgery one of the most popular operations (about 500,000 a year in America) in the medical field? That might be a question you may want to ask your doctor or surgeon.

So before you contribute to your doctor or surgeon's six figure salary, maybe you should try to pass your gallstones with some simple natural health tips.

How to Pass Your Gallstones Naturally

Gallstones have been around since the beginning of man. In fact, some believe that gallstones were more common in the past (because of earlier diets) than they are today. Diets have changed dramatically over the past 2000 years. If you were alive thousands of years ago, you might have had a diet that was all protein and fat which is very conducive to gallstones.

And guess how they cured gallstones back then, by flushing them with a high fiber diet! And you can pass your gallstones too!

1. All gallstone home treatments should involve water soluble fiber. Water soluble dietary fiber is in most types of fruits and vegetables. This type of fiber is great for flushing the body and your gallstones. You should eat at least 5-7 servings of fruits and vegetables daily.

2. Another helpful tip would be to drink as much water as possible. Water also aids in bodily flushing if drank routinely throughout the day. The problem we face is that we often do not drink enough water or we only drink water with meals. You should drink 2 cups of water for every 2 hours you are awake.

3. You should also be supplementing vitamin C. Vitamin C will help convert fat to bile which will prevent future stones and could help pass your present gallstones. You should take at least 2000 mg daily but do not exceed 3000 mg.

4. Avoiding high fat foods and fried foods is also important for curing and preventing gallstones. We recommend staying away from these foods: eggs, pork, onions, fowl, milk, citrus, corn, beans, and nuts.

5. Finally, we also recommend an annual liver and gallbladder cleanse. Most natural health doctors believe that everyone should try a gallbladder cleanse each year. The best gallbladder cleanses use these ingredients: extra virgin olive oil, a grapefruit, Epsom salt, ornithine capsules and black walnut tincture. Anti-inflammatory actions have been documented for the saponins (aescin). Aescin reduces transcapillary filtration of water and protein and increases venous tone related to increased prostaglandin F 2 alpha (vasoconstrictor). Murine studies have demonstrated a reduction in vascular permeability from artificial insults (that is, acetic acid or histamine) after pretreatment with components of horse chestnut (escins, desaacylescins). Aescin stabilizes cholesterolcontaining membranes of Iysosomes and limits the release of the enzymes. Usually, the release of the enzymes is increased in chronic pathological conditions of the vein. These enzymes normally break down the mucopolysaccharides in the cell membranes in the capillary walls, but this action is inhibited byaescin . Aescin has shown notable antiviral activity in vitro toward a strain of influenza VIrus.

Reported Uses

Horse chestnut therapy has been claimed to be effective for treating diarrhea, fever, hemorrhoids, phlebitis, and enlargement of the prostate gland. Some data exist to support a role in venous insufficiency.

Data also suggest a role for horse chestnut in treating varicose veins. Certain enzymes responsible for the metabolism of substances that regulate capillary rigidity and pore size were found to be reduced in patients with varicose veins treated with 900 mg of horse chestnut extract. Concentrations of these enzymes have been found to be elevated in patients with varicose veins and may playa role in this disorder .

Dosage

Dosages of 100 to 150 mg/day P.O. of the aescin component, given as a single dose or in divided doses b.i.d., have been clinically tested in humans.

Adverse Reactions

CV: shock.

GI: hepatotoxicity, nausea (with oral use), vomiting.

GU: nephropathy.

Hematologic: severe bleeding and bruising (caused by anti thrombotic activity of aesculin).

Musculoskeletal: muscle spasm.

Skin: hypersensitivity reactions, pruritus, urticaria.

Interactions

Anticoagulants, aspirin: Increased risk of bleeding because of aesculin, a hydroxycoumarin. Monitor the patient. Contraindications and precautions

Horse chestnut is contraindicated in pregnant or breast-feeding patients; effects are unknown. Use cautiously in patients who are hypersensitive to other members of the horse chestnut family and in those with bleeding disorders.

Special Considerations

The fruit, leaves, and older bark of horse chestnut are poisonous.

Monitor liver function test results.

Inform the patient and health care staff that horse chestnut may color urine red.

Instruct the patient to report fatigue, fever, unusual bleeding or bruising, and yellowing of skin or eyes.

Advise the patient to only use products derived from the seeds or bark of young branches.

Advise the patient to report changes in effectiveness of other drug therapies.

Urge the patient to check with his health care provider before taking other prescription or OTC drugs that may contain aspirin.

Points of Interest

Germany’s Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices recognizes horse chestnut extract as effective in treating chronic venous insufficiency.

Do not confuse horse chestnut with buckeye, also called horse chestnut.

Horse chestnut has been used I.V. in Europe for postoperative edema, presumably for its diuretic activity.

Commentary

Compression stocking therapy has been the primary treatment option for chronic venous insufficiency, although patient compliance is generally poor. No allopathic drugs are indicated for treating this disorder. Standardized horse chestnut extracts or certain components (escins) have intriguing properties and may be useful in patients with symptoms associated with this disorder. Future studies should pursue this potential application. Of note, some data from previous controlled trials have examined parameters that might be considered subjective, such as fatigue, leg pain, pruritus, and tenseness. Additional large, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials that examine both efficacy and safety in a more objective manner are needed before horse chestnut or any of its components are given a definitive role in therapy.

Uncover the Facts About Your Dog Urinating Blood

It’s frightening to see your dog urinating blood and you want some answers fast.  Listed are some of the more common reasons a dog is urinating blood. Make an appointment with the vet because blood in the urine may require antibiotics or may be something serious enough to require surgery.

1.  The most common reason for blood in urine is a urinary tract infection.  The infection could be in the bladder, or urethra or kidneys.

2.  Another cause if your dog is urinating blood could be Kidney disease or Canine Renal Disease.  Some symptoms are similar to urinary tract infection such as increased urination, urinating less than usual, thirst, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, no appetite, eating a poisonous substance.

3.  In male dogs the prostate gland could be infected and they normally have a swollen penis and testicles.  Prostatic disease can be detected from a simple rectal exam to see if the prostate is enlarged and an ultrasound for if cancer is suspect.

4.  In a female dog urinating blood a uterine infection could be the cause especially if they have recently given birth, or during a specific part of the heat cycle.  This condition could be a bacterial infection of the uterus called Pyometra.

5.  Urinary stones sometimes form in the urinary tract which can scrape the urethra causing blood in the urine.  Causes can be mineral crystals in the urine, bacteria, diseases, some medications, excess Vitamin C, imbalance in pH of urine.

6.  If your dog has eaten something harmful such as poison this also may cause blood in the urine.

Abdominal cramps and diarrhea are symptoms that may come with various diseases. These diseases include gastritis, food poisoning, irritable bowel syndrome, parasitic infections, diverticulitis, and traveler's diarrhea. Diarrhea is a disease where a person suffers from abnormal bowel movements. A bowel movement would be considered abnormal if it occurs more than thrice in a day. Abdominal cramps are caused by spasms or muscle contractions.

It can be said that abdominal cramps and diarrhea tells us about the irritation that our colon or the digestive system faces for various reasons. It is often said that it is through diarrhea that our body frees itself from various unwanted substances. Bacterial infections can also trigger diarrhea.

In short, what we eat has lot to do with abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Eating of unhygienic or under prepared food items often causes food poisoning, irritable bowel syndrome, and gastritis. People who have allergies from various foodstuffs can also suffer from diarrhea.

Apart from the above mentioned cases, abdominal cramps are seen in women who are undergoing their menopause. Information on Listeria Infection

Listeriosis is a hazardous infection caused by eating food that’s impure with bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes). The bacteria that reason listeria infections (Listeria monocytogenes) are found in soil and water. A lot of wild and domestic animals also carry the bacteria. Listeria has the unusual ability to grow in cold environments, including certain refrigerated or frozen foods. Listeria is dissimilar from other bacteria that cause food poisoning because it can survive and continue to grow even when in the refrigerator. Foods contaminated with listeria look, smell, and taste normal.

Listeria can assault the body through a normal and whole gastrointestinal tract. Once in the body, Listeria can pass through the blood stream but the germs are frequently found in cells. Listeria also produces toxins that break cells. Listeria invades and grows best in the central nervous system among immune-compromised persons, causing meningitis and/or encephalitis (brain infection). In pregnant women, the fetus can become infected, leading to spontaneous abortion, stillbirths, or sepsis (blood infection) in infancy. Approximately 2,500 cases of listeriosis are probable to occur in the U.S. each year.

Certain group of individuals are at bigger risk for listeriosis, involving pregnant women (and their unborn children) and persons with cancer, diabetes, or kidney disease. Infected pregnant women may experience only a meek, flu-like illness; however, infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth, premature delivery, or infection of the newborn. Symptoms of Listeriosis differ in those affected healthy people may develop few or no symptoms and for others the infection can become serious enough to require hospitalization and may threaten their life. A person with listeriosis has fever and muscle aches.

If virus spreads to the nervous system, warning signs such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or seizures can happen. There are many antibiotics with which listeriosis may be treated. Ampicillin usually is considered antibiotic of choice. Prevention is better than cure. Good food handling and safe storage of food are important for everyone. Another aspect of prevention is advising high-risk groups such as pregnant women and immunocompromised patients to avoid unpasteurised pâtés and foods such as soft cheeses like feta, Brie, Camembert cheese, and bleu.
