They are more common in sports such as football, basketball, and volleyball as these involve running and jumping, landing from a jump, fast changes in direction or lots of stop-starts.


When a sprain occurs there is sometimes a snapping or popping sound or a feeling of your ankle "giving way" as a ligament is torn. A sprain is often very painful, with the pain gradually getting worse when you move your ankle. With a severe sprain, you may not be able to bear weight on your leg.

You may well suffer with swilling and bruising. Although bruising can take up to 24 hours to manifest itself, the swapping usually happens soon after the injury. The swelling around your ankle can make it difficult to move your foot, and your ankle may feel unstable. You may also find that the area is warm to the touch.

Elastography – Innovative Technology For Cancer Detection and More

Elastography is a non-invasive medical imaging technology which ultilises the principle of the difference in the mechanical property of elasticity between normal and abnormal tissues in an organ.

Basic Principle of Elastography

The term elasticity refers to the physical property of the tissue to change shape when a mechanical force is applied and to regain the original shape when the force is withdrawn. The imaging technique is based on the basic principle that there is difference in the elastic properties in between different tissues (for example muscle is stiffer than fat) and also elasticity can change with disease (for example tumor tissue is stiffer than normal tissue and hence a more compressible lesion is mostly not malignant).

Ultrasound elastography

Most often, it is combined with ultrasonography. First a conventional ultrasonogram is taken during which the transmit high frequency sound waves through the transducer, which hits the tissue to be imaged and the image is produced based on the reflected sound waves or echos from the tissue. After this, an external mechanical compressive force is exerted over the tissue to be imaged to produce strain and the imaging of tissue is done under this strain. The image produced is called an elastogram.

Applications of Ultrasound Elastography

1. Detection of breast tumors: Can be used as next-line imaging technique when mammography detects a suspicious lesion.

2. Distinguishing benign and malignant breast lesions: It increases the specificity of ultrasound by differentiating benign and breast tumors. Benign tumors reduce their size on mechanical compression while malignant tumors being stiff stays the same size or a bit larger. Thus it reduces the number of needle biopsies.

3. Detection of dermatological malignancies.

4. Can be used with endoscopic ultrasound for differentiating between benign and malignant lymph nodes, targeting suspicious lymph nodes for fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy from multiple lymphadenopathy, differentiating suspicious pancreatic masses and taking biopsy.

5. Accurately locate prostate tumor foci, determine extent and take targeted biopsies.

6. Studies have shown that it is a potential adjunctive tool in identifying thyroid cancer especially in cytologically indeterminate nodules.

7. Cardiological applications are also under review especially relating to the function of the cardiac muscles.

8. Identification of musculoskeletal masses.

CT and MR Elastography

Using elastography in advanced imaging technologies like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) is also studied. Researchers have already found that MRE can be used in diagnosing various liver pathologies such as fibrosis, cirhosis, portal hypertension, tumors etc. It can also be used to image the kidney, spleen, stomach, bowel etc. Lung strain images using CT elastography is used in diagnosing pulmonary nodules.

What is the relationship between acid alkaline balance and pancreatitis? There is a direct link between these conditions. To say more, whole body acid can cause pancreatitis.

Everything what we eat goes to the stomach and then semi-digested food moves into the duodenum; first part of the small intestine. Here, pancreatic enzymes digest most of the proteins and carbohydrates and 90% of the fats.

Normally pancreas produces very strong, digestive, pancreatic enzymes in an inactive form. In case of acidity, digestive, pancreatic enzymes begin to activate inside the pancreas causing self-digestion; pancreatitis.

Self-digestion leads to inflammation of the pancreatic tissue; it destroys structure and kills the pancreatic cells. By analogy, it is remarkably similar to disaster in the atomic reactor when it starts meltdown and destroys itself. Disasters in the Fukushima in Japan and Chernobyl in Ukraine are the example of self-destruction. Acidity kills the pancreas in many ways, which I described in books and articles. Therefore, healing actions in case of chronic pancreatitis need to focus on acid-alkaline balance.

Could Your Candida Be Celiac Disease

Everyone has candida. It's a bacteria that lives naturally in all human bodies, mostly in the small intestine and the mucous membranes. It does not do anything harmful, and our bodies do not notice it. When it is allowed to flourish, though, it becomes problematic. Zoanthids For Everyone

Zoanthids are rightfully beloved by nearly all marine aquarists. They are often bright, exclusively colored and fast-growing. Because they are generally hardy, they make an excellent choice for the beginning aquarist; however, the rarer color patterns try even experienced reef aquarists. Despite their popularity, many aquarists are unclear of zoanthids relationship to other marine animals, especially those that we commonly call coral. On the one hand, zoanthids look like miniature sea anemones, yet they also seem to resemble soft corals such as the Gloves Polyps pictured below (Clavularia species-pronounced "klav-yoo-lahr-ee-ah"). In truth zoanthids are either anemones nor soft corals-so what are they?

"Flower Animals"

Let's start with some basics. Zoanthids, like all of the animals we typically call "coral" in the marine aquarium hobby, are cnidarians (pronounced "nigh-dare-ee-yans"). More specifically, zoanthids are part of the class Anthhoza, which includes the soft and leather corals, sea anemones, mushroom corals and stony corals (and exclude other cnidarians such as fire corals, lace corals, jellyfishes, and sea wasps). Anthhoza, as a word, originates from Greek ("anthos" and "zoion") and translates roughly as "flower animal," which is an apt name for most zoanthids. Like sea anemones, mushroom corals and stony corals, zoanthids are called hexacorals because they have polyps with tentacles in multiples of six (octocorals, on the other hand, have eight tentacles). Zoanthids, unlike the "true" or stony corals (what hobbyists generally term SPS and LPS) lack skeletons, but they are also not soft corals (which are all octocorals). The polyps of zoanthids are either solitary or embedded in so-called mats. Solitary polyps are often connected to other polyps by runners (called stolons, pronounced "stoe-lahn"), while mat polyps embed themselves in a tissue matrix or mat (called a coenenchyme and pronounced "see-nehn-kyme").

When the aquarist looks at a zoanthid polyp, they are generally focused on the oral disc. Each zoanthid polyp has a mouth (called a siphonoglyph and pronounced "sye-fah-no-glif"), which is part of the oral disc and generally surrounded by two rings of tentacles. Like all cnidarians, zoanthids possess nematocysts (pronounced "ne-mat-oh-sist") or stinging cells (the word cnidarian translates from the Greek as "stting nettle"), which assist in food capture. When it comes to defense, however, it is a toxin called palytoxin, which keeps most predators (including the aquarist) at bay.

It is common to tout the fact that most zoanthids are easy to keep and require no supplementary feedings. While it is true that many of the commonly available zoanthids are zooxanthellate (zoo-zan-thuh-late) and host symbiotic zooxanthellae (zoh-zan-thel-ee) in their tissues, the reality is that nearly all zooanthids are on on food and plankton capture to sustain their metabolism. As a result, almost all should be target fed in captivity (in addition to providing appropriate lighting).

Identifying Zoanthids

It is very difficult to identify individual species when dealing with zoanthids. That is why you frequently see them sold by their genus name (eg Zoanthus spp.) And a creative description of their coloration (eg Halloween Zoanthids). Zoanthids are often (there is much debate that is well beyond the scope of this article) divided into several families. The most frequently seen zoanthids in the aquarium trade are from the families Parazoanthidae and Zoanthidae. Within the family Parazoanthidae, the genus Parazoanthus (pare-ah-zoe-an-thuss) is particularly popular (eg Yellow Polyps), while the Zoanthus (zoe-an-thuss) genus (eg Z. pacificus and Z. sociatus) and the Palythoa genus (which is now often seen as being congeneric and near conspecific with the genus Protopalythoa) are the most commonly represented genera from the family Zoanthidae. So-called Acrozoanthus (ak-roh-zoe-an-thuss) or Stick Polyps are also seen with some frequency in the hobby and are usually classified as associated to the family Zoanthidae.

Family Parazoanthidae – Brief Description and Husbandry Tips

Species from the genus Parazoanthus are the most common in this family, and, as species identification is uncertain, most are sold as Parazoanthus spp. or Simply Yellow Polyps. Although called Yellow Polyps, their coloration can vary from a cinnamon-brown to a bright yellow, with some species even taking on a red color (eg P. puertoricense). The polyps reproduce by budding at the base of the parent polyp, and they form colonies in this way that encrust rocks, shells or vacant worm tubes. Some Parazoanthus species live commensally with other organisms (eg sponges), but most of the specimens seen in the hobby contain symbiotic zooxanthellae within their tissue and, given sufficient light, will do quite well with only periodic target feedings. The fact that many Yellow Polyps are indiscriminate feeders means that they often survive in a mature aquarium without any target feedings. This fact, however, should not deter the aquarist from at least weekly target feedings of zooplankton-type foods. Moderate light, moderate to strong intermittent flow and supplementary feedings are the key to success with these attractive zoanthids.

Family Zoanthidae – Brief Description and Husbandry Tips

Recent research has found remarkable similarity between the genus Palythoa and Protopalythoa, and so we will mostly deal with them together here. If there is a difference similar to the aquarist, it is in the fact that Protopalythoa species' polyps (eg Button Polyps, Protopalythoa spp.) Are often not embedded in the tissue matrix or mat, while Palythoa (pal'-ee'-thoe '-ah) species' polyps (eg Sea Mat or Encrusting Colony Polyp, Palythoa spp.) are. All have broad, flat oral discs surrounded by tentacles (sometimes more tentacles on Protopalythoa species). The disks may be brown, brownish yellow or even a cream color, and some have quite attractive fluorescent accents and strikes. Sometimes the oral disc will be darker than the mat in which it is embedded, again, making for a nice display. All are fairly light tolerant and prefer moderate to high flow. As with all zoanthids, they will benefit from targeted feedings, and those with longer tentacles and broader oral disks may require more direct feeding. One word of warning: be careful, as many of these zoanthids are competitive and will easily overgrow adjacent corals.

The Zoanthus genus is often the best represented genus from the family Zoanthidae, and it is most frequently what people think of when they think of zoanthids. There are many species, and most are simply identified for the aquarist by their remarkable color schemes. The polyps are generally small with dramatic contrasting colors between their original disks and tentacles. These animals rely heavily on zooxanthellae, so much so that some aquarists claim no food response occurs as a result of targeted feeds. In reality, this is probably because Zoanthus species are more selective in their feeding, but regardless, it is essential to place them in high light environments to sustain their zooxanthellae populations. Given the proper environment, these zoanthids are hardy, fast-growing animals that reproduce by budding and will rapidly spread across your live rock in a colorful display that will ad interest and beauty to your reef tank.

Something for Everyone

In conclusion, zoanthids are, generally speaking, highly interesting, attractive and hardy animals. They can add color to almost any reefscape, and they require little in the way of specific husbandry. Most grow quickly in captivity, and their collection from the wild generally has little detrimental impact on natural ecosystems. Zoanthids are often the first cnidarians introduced to the beginning aquarist's tank, but the more exclusively colored and rarer species are equally coveted by advanced aquarists. In short, zoanthids offer something for everyone.

Ovarian Cysts and the Use of Soy Products

There is a great confusion about one of the main cause of ovarian cysts. Excess estrogen! Or what we know in alternative medicine as estrogen dominance. Prior to ovulation, there is supposed to be a surge of progesterone to help the egg to be released and at the same time prevent the formation of permanent cysts. When this does not happen, these cysts will grow with every menstrual cycle. The problem becomes chronic. We see health practitioners recommend hormone to shrink these cysts with no attempt in trying to get the body to regulate its own hormonal problem. Estrogen is the culprit. Progesterone is the good guy (or should I say gal). There are many factors that cause estrogen dominance:

  1. Obesity – Fat is a producer of estrogen
  2. Diet high in fat – the more fat you eat the more fat you have and as a result more estrogen
  3. Lack of Fiber
  4. Dysfunctional liver
  5. Not eating enough cruciferous vegetables such as Broccoli and Cabbage
  6. Lack of exercise – woman who are athletic tend to not get their menses

Since the discovery of Soy and its benefits many have started to use Soy products liberally. We also have some form of Soy almost in everything we buy in the supermarket (soy oil, soy isolates, soy lecithin to mention a few). Studies have shown clearly that cultures that use soy as part of their diets have less:

  1. Heart attacks
  2. Lower cholesterol levels
  3. Lower incidence for female cancers such as breast cancer
  4. Stronger bones
  5. Lower rates of prostate cancer

These studies found out that the main reason for this was a substance called genistein which had phyto-estrogenic properties. In other words, Soy has a form of estrogen that binds to receptors and blocks the bad estrogen of the body preventing these diseases. So after this discovery Americans started using Soy products excessively. Soy milk for the cereal, soy yogurt, soy patties, soy burgers, soy everything! The result of this was the opposition of what was expected and opposite to the results that the other cultures were obtaining.

What is the Reason?

The good news for people with ulcers is that there are many effective, safe, herbs that are available that can help ulcers to heal. One of the main herbs is licorice, with a number of clinical studies confirming its usefulness in treating ulcers. In addition to licorice, there are several anti-inflammatory, ulcer-healing, stomach-soothing herbs. All are pleasant tasting and safe for long-term use. Using them in combination can be especially helpful. Several options are listed below for your convenience, depending on what you have available and find desirable.


People with ulcers are often advised to avoid alcohol. But alcohol-based tinctures are one of the easiest ways to take many of the herbs that help ulcers. If you're using tinctures rather than teas, put the recommended dose in a cup, add boiling water and allow the mixture to sit for 10 minutes. This helps evaporate some of the alcohol, which can worsen ulcers. You can also substitute glycerin extracts, known as glycerites; use the same dosages. Add 3,000 to 10,000 milligrams of vitamin C plus 1 tablespoon of manuka honey three or four times per day. If you experience diarrhea or burning in the stomach, reduce the dose.

Continue the treatment for two months. After that, you should be retested for the bacterium. If it is still present, go for the antibiotics.

(Because DGL licorice is activated by saliva, it does not work as well if you simply swallow it.) Caution: DGL licorice may cause diarrhea in some people. Whole licorice should not be used if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have heart disease, liver disease or diabetes, or if you are taking heart or blood pressure drugs. Limit use of whole licorice to six weeks without under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner.

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita)

This lovely, old-fashioned herb promotes healing, decreases inflammation in the stomach, and can ease the anxiety that may be perpetuating the ulcer. Typical dosage: 3 to 6 cups of tea per day (steep 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried herb in 1/4 liter of hot water for 10 minutes); or 1/4 to 1 teaspoon of tincture or glycerite three or four times per day.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

These beautiful orange or yellow flowers are anti-inflammatory and wound-healing. They are also mildly astringent, which helps reduce bleeding. So if bleeding is one of your ulcer symptoms, calendula is a good choice. Typical dosage: 3 to 6 cups of tea per day (steep 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried flowers in 1/4 liter of hot water for 10 minutes); or 1/4 to 1 teaspoon of tincture or glycerite three or four times per day.

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria)
