Unfortunately, about half a million of those suffering from heart attacks do not survive. And those who are lucky enough to survive may also undergo emotional turmoil that affects their recovery from these attacks.

Indeed, many heart-attack survivors are beset by the emotional feeling of fear – fear of imminent death or fear of a recurrent attack soon. The fear may become so obsessive that they become oversensitive of even the smallest tinges in their bodies. For some, the fear has become so real that they are afraid of being left alone – and this often becomes an emotional anguish for themselves as well as their spouses and loved ones who take care of them.

A heart attack is often an emotional awakening to the frailty of health, or the reality of death. The realization of human mortality is similar to that experienced by the elderly as they approach their inevitable end. Although the confrontation with death can be motivating for some who subsequently decide to embark on a new lifestyle to improve their overall health, the realization of the mortality of life can be debilitating to the majority of survivors. This lack of motivation on many heart-attack survivors may interfere with the rehabilitation process, and thus making them more vulnerable to future attacks.

Most heart-attack survivors also undergo a phase in which they are angry with themselves about their attacks. One common scenario is that they may become angry even at those who are trying to help them. Another scenario is that they may feel injustice, such as “why me?”

In short, heart-attack survivors have to recover not only from the coronary heart disease itself but also from the emotions associated with a heart attack. Depression is common among heart-attack survivors. Accordingly, spouses and family members have to be more understanding of their mood swings and emotional outbursts in order to help them on the road to recovery from heart attacks.

A positive outlook of life may be the best remedy against depression and other distressing emotions. Self-reflection is able to promote positive lifestyle changes, which are critical to long-term recovery from heart attacks. It is important that being granted “a second chance in life” should become the driving force to learn valuable life lessons from a heart attack.

It is understandable that heart-attack survivors may still have lingering doubts and fears, but time resolves most feelings of anger, anxiety, fear, or depression. Once emotional recovery begins, recovery from a heart attack will duly follow, if accompanied by positive changes in lifestyle.

Prevention of Breast Tumors & Breast Cancer

There’s a medical term ‘Benign Breast Disease’ (BBD) which includes a host of breast problems for women. This category includes any type of abnormal breast tissue other than malignant. One condition includes breast tumors which are benign yet have from the normal breast tissue consistency.

There are a number of cystic conditions ‘lumped’ under the heading of fibrocystic breast disease. Symptoms may include pain known as mastalgia, heat, swelling and obvious tenderness. Pain and changes in breast tissue can be cyclical within the menstrual cycle, often triggered by low progesterone and high estrogens.

Recently there’s been more attention given to BBD being a risk factor for developing Breast Cancer (BC) and rightly so. Several causes of BBD are the same causes or risk factors for BC.

In several upcoming articles I’ll review the medical research from around the world. I spent almost 2 years writing two books, one on the optimization of thyroid hormones and the other on the autoimmune condition Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, and was amazed to find hundreds of articles on this subject of risk factors.

Here is an example of just one of them. The Lancet published an epidemiological study in 1975 which exposed a lower incidence of Breast Cancer in Japanese women compared with women from other parts of the world. The only variable the researchers could find was their higher intake of seafood and sea vegetables rich in iodine. There was a lot of speculation why this might be but it’s really only been over the last 35 years that we have a clearer understanding as to why.

I hesitate to start with the subject of iodine because it is one thing to take a food rich in iodine and quite another to take an iodine supplement. There is danger in this.

So I’ll wait a little and mention two other studies which I believe are very important. They are both similar and prove much the same point. One was out of Pisa, Italy, in 2008. They took 103 women with biopsied ductal cell breast carcinoma and before any intervention or treatment the women were checked for thyroid problems. They were evaluated through thyroid lab tests, physical exams and a thyroid ultrasound.

It turned out that 48% of them had various types of thyroid problems. The most prevalent was an enlarged thyroid gland termed a goiter. The most common cause of a goiter is an iodine deficiency or insufficiency. The less common cause is excess estrogen which blocks absorption of iodide into thyroid cells.

The second thyroid condition found was Hashimoto’s which is inflammation of the thyroid gland. There are a few theories about the cause of Hashimoto’s but the one which is most outstanding is the inflammation of thyroid cells being caused by an increased production of hydrogen peroxide inside the cells. This increased production is due to the hormone TSH or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone which, among other things, stimulates thyroid cells to make more hydrogen peroxide, a process required to convert iodide to iodine. This is necessary for the thyroid to make its hormones.

Normally once thyroid hormones are produced and enter the blood stream then TSH production will subside and so will the production of hydrogen peroxide inside the thyroid cells. But if there’s an iodide deficiency and the thyroid can’t make its hormones then TSH will remain elevated and continue to stimulate the cells to make more and more hydrogen peroxide.

These elevated levels of hydrogen peroxide lasting for years and decades eventually leads to irritation, inflammation and finally some degree of destruction. And as soon as the thyroid cells break apart and release hydrogen peroxide, enzymes and proteins you’ve got the makings for a thyroid autoimmune disease.

So what’s all this got to do with breast cancer and benign breast tumors?

Obviously the lack of iodide leads to various thyroid conditions including hypothyroidism since obviously the thyroid requires specific nutrients including iodide to make its hormones. No iodide no thyroid hormone production.

And so often where there’s a lack of iodide there’s a lack of iodine. Iodine has been proven to protect breast tissue from estrogens, estrogen mimicking chemicals, what are called Endocrine Distrupting Chemical and heavy metals.

Optimal thyroid hormones help to improve sex hormone binding globulin which lowers free estrogens, improves levels of progesterone (low progesterone is a risk factor) and helps to optimize the body’s metabolic rate. A lower metabolic rate causes easier weight gain and the primary source of non-glandular estrogen is fat. Even this form of estrogen stimulates estrogen receptors on breast tissue.

Heart Attack – How Aspirin Helps

If you or a loved one has heart disease, heart attack prevention and treatment are very important subjects. Your physician may have recommended taking a low dose aspirin each day to avoid heart attack. You may have heard that you can increase your chances of survival during a heart attack by taking aspirin. But how?

How Can Aspirin Help in Heart Attack?

Imagine that you are sitting watching TV with your spouse. You begin to sense that your chest is heavy. It feels as though someone is tightening wide steel bands around you. You shift positions, but the feeling remains. You take a few deep breaths and try to relax, thinking it is stress. The pain begins to spread to your jaw and shoulder. You mention it to your spouse, who turns to look at you, dashes to the phone to call for an ambulance, and returns with an aspirin. “For your heart attack,” says your spouse. Why?

How can aspirin help in heart attack?

Heart Attack Scenario

A heart attack is an active, ongoing event. It is not something that begins and ends in five minutes. You can limit the damage done to your heart and body during this ongoing event by taking action immediately after the heart attack begins. Calling emergency services is one action step. Taking aspirin is a second action step.

Paramedics will arrive quickly when you call 911. They will give you oxygen and medication for your heart attack. They will monitor your blood pressure and heart rhythm to try to prevent heart attack complications. They will rush you to the emergency room of the nearest hospital.

Once you reach the Emergency Room, doctors and nurses will hurry to perform an EKG and blood tests to confirm or refute a heart attack diagnosis. If you are having a heart attack, doctors will usually try to open the blocked artery with angioplasty, a stent, or a drug.

But why take aspirin? If they are going to use all of these modern “miracle-workers” on you, how can aspirin help in heart attack?

Aspirin’s Role

Aspirin has been found to slow down platelets. Platelets are microscopic blood cells your body uses to trigger blood clotting. If you cut your finger, blood begins to flow from the cut. Immediately, platelets move to the cut finger and cause the blood to clot. If you were to take aspirin the moment you cut your finger, you would slow down the movement of platelets. The blood would continue to flow freely for a longer time.

You would need only a tiny amount of aspirin to slow down every tiny platelet in your bloodstream. You would have to take it quickly, though. The clotting of blood would increase minute by minute, so the sooner you took the aspirin, the better your chances of keeping the finger bleeding.

Of course, this would be foolish action in the case of a cut finger. You want the finger to stop bleeding. You want the blood to clot.

In heart attack, however, you do not want the blood to clot. The reason for most heart attacks is the rupture of plaque in a coronary artery. When the rupture occurs, the body senses injury and calls for platelets. The platelets hurry to trigger a blood clot, just as they will in a cut finger. As minutes pass, the clot grows larger and larger. It grows until it completely blocks the artery. Blood can no longer flow to the part of the heart served by that artery. Blood can no longer carry oxygen to the heart. Without oxygen, that part of the heart begins to die. The heart attack runs its course.

If aspirin is taken in the first few minutes of an attack, you slow down the rush of platelets, just as in our example of the cut finger. You make it more difficult for the blood to clot. You keep the blood flowing, carrying vital oxygen to the heart. You limit the risk of heart attack damage.

How to Take Aspirin for Heart Attack

1. QUICKLY: The most important thing is to take aspirin immediately if you sense you may be having a heart attack. Aspirin needs nearly 15 minutes to fully slow platelets. Get it into your blood stream quickly.

2. AMOUNT: Take one 325 mg. of aspirin for heart attack. Do not take two or three in hopes of getting better results. A smaller dose is actually more helpful than a larger dose.

3. TYPE: The aspirin must not be enteric-coated. The coating is added to keep aspirin from dissolving too quickly in your stomach. For heart attack, you want it to dissolve as quickly as possible. Even when chewed, enteric-coated aspirin have been found to dissolve too slowly. So be sure you always have at hand non-coated 325 mg. aspirin tablets.

4. CHEW: It is very important that you CHEW the aspirin. Do not swallow it whole. CHEW the aspirin at least 30 seconds before swallowing it. Chewing will reduce the tablet to small particles, ready for digestion. It will also stimulate saliva, which will start the digestion. CHEW.

In the October 1997 issue of “Circulation,” the American Heart Association (AHA) journal, it was reported that up to 10,000 more people annually could survive heart attack simply by chewing one 325 milligram aspirin tablet at the first chest pain or other heart attack symptom. Be prepared.

Why That Persistent Common Cold May Not Just Be Another Cold

We've all experienced the common cold with its nasal congestion, cough and runny nose. Some colds are worse than others and some progress into more serious illnesses. It is important to know the difference so that you can treat the problem most effectively.

The common cold is not usually a reason for concern. However, when a cold becomes persistent it may just mean that it has turned into a sinus infection. Many of the symptoms of a sinus infection are the same as those of the common cold. Nasal discharge, cough and sore throat can be symptoms of a cold or of sinusitis.

Sometimes what seems to be a cold is not a cold at all but a sinus infection or allergy instead. But how can you tell when what you are experiencing is a sinus infection? There are some telltale signs to look for.

To start with if you have sinusitis you will typically have a stuffy nose. The nasal passages become blocked with thick mucous. When the mucous does not move for a while it produces bacteria and that leads to infection. The stuffy nose associated with an infection is usually more severe than what you have with a cold. While a typically cold has some stuffiness it is typically not severe for longer than a day.

If you have a thick yellow or green nasal discharge this signals an infection. Usually nasal discharge is thin and clear. The thick mucous may not drain properly which can cause pressure and pain in sinuses and face. You may have a headache.

You may also develop a fever. A fever is the body's way of fighting an infection. The fever usually indicates infection is present. Chills can also accompany a fever. The fever is typically low-grade unless the infection becomes more severe. A high fever requires immediate attention by a doctor.

A sinus infection can cause the face to become painful to the touch. This is because the swollen nasal cavities are located on the face. The first place you may notice pain is on either side of the bridge of the nose but pain can be anywhere on the face. This type of pain does not accompany the common cold.

A typical cold usually lasts several days and then the symptoms improve. If after a few days the symptoms are not showing improvement or are worsening you may have more than a cold. Keep track of your symptoms so you can determine how your illness is progressing.

If your symptoms have worsened or you have developed a fever you should see a doctor. He can help to determine if the problem is a cold or if it is an infection. Sinus infection can usually be treated with antibiotics successfully, especially when they are caught early. The doctor will examine the nose. A red and swollen nasal passage suggests there may be an infection. If he can not tell for sure he may order a CT scan or MRI.
