Hey Baby: Is it Colic or Reflux

New and experienced parents alike are eager to solve the mystery of what’s really bothering their baby – is it reflux or colic? The symptoms for both are similar, from the constant crying to poor sleep. However, it’s important to single out reflux as the cause of such symptoms as most infants are wrongly labeled colicky when they’re actually reflux cases that haven’t been diagnosed and treated.

Reflux Versus Colic

It’s easier to identify if a baby has reflux or colic if you understand the differences between them.

· Reflux-Gastro Esophageal Reflux (GER) – is the more accurate term for reflux. It’s the stomach contents’ backward flow upwards the esophagus. Everyone experiences this occasionally, especially after a heavy meal. It’s another story when it happens in babies. Infant reflux is usually the result of lower esophageal sphincter immaturity, this is the muscle linking the esophagus with the stomach.

Common symptoms of reflux are pain and irritability, poor sleep patterns accompanied by frequent waking, arching back and neck during or after feeding time to vomit or spit up, repeated hiccups or wet burp, sinus congestion or recurrent ear infections, sudden or constant crying or other colic-like symptoms.

· Colic – Colic refers to extended, uncontrollable crying among babies that are otherwise well-fed and healthy. Sure, all infants cry, but if the bawling exceeds three hours daily and happens three to four days per week, you most likely have a colic situation on your hands.

A major sign of colic is the nonstop crying for lengthy timeframes – and the wailing is worse at night. Colicky babies appear in pain or look uncomfortable, pull their legs up towards their abdomen, turn red-faced, pass gas and lift their head.

Breastfeeding is the perfect solution for reflux babies; given that breastfed infants have fewer as well as milder reflux episodes than formula-fed babes. Compared to formula, human milk is easier to digest and empties from the stomach two times faster – something essential in reflux prevention. The quicker milk leaves the stomach, the less time there is for esophageal backup.

Baby Reflux Solutions

Here are tricks to easing reflux in babies.

· Give babies more frequent but smaller feedings as digestion is easier.

· For babies nursing constantly that spit up after each feeding, consider offering them pacifiers so the stomach is not overfilled.

· Work on identifying foods in the baby’s or mom’s diet that could be causing such reflux reactions. Citrus, processed foods, tomatoes, high-fat foods and dairy are common baby reflux culprits.

· Try keeping babies in upright position while feeding as well as after.

· Handle reflux babies gently and burp them frequently.

· Moms should hold affected babies upright or allow them to lie upright on them for 15 minutes.

Keep in mind that not all infants suffering from reflux require medication. Before moving to serious drugs to take care of the problem, consider the above suggestions first. Most of them could help ease babies’ discomfort and spit-up issues, doing away with the need for strong medications.

Emergency Vet: Offering Complete Care To Your Beloved Vet

Like humans, your pet may also require an urgent treatment in case of any unusual incident which hurts him physically. This is realized recently when I had to take my beloved puppy early morning to a veterinarian near my home. It was couple of months back when during weekend we went out with our pet for a long drive and as my dog has habit of keeping his face out of window to enjoy the cool breeze and watching commuters he got something inhaled in his eye. As we did not notice any change or sign of pain or uneasiness on his face we did not pay any attention towards him and went directly into our bed for sleeping.

But, next morning had something unfortunate written something unbearable and terrible for us, and only some pet lover can understand my situation. What will be your reaction if you early morning when you see the swelling on the eye of your dog, completely covering his eye and drops of blood coming from his eye? Obviously, without wasting a second you will rush to the veterinarian that is close to your home to get him treated at the earliest. Thank to God, we do not have to struggle much in searching for an emergency vet in our locality to get my dog treated on time.

Anyhow, the above mentioned incidence is just an illustration when pet lovers like me and you might feel the need of some urgent veterinarian to get rid of our beloved pets. There are various reasons when you might require their services for instance, if while going out with you for buying any grocery item at the walking distance of your home he might get injured by some vehicle, he might swallow something which obstacles his breathing vein, he might have eaten something unnatural which he starts vomiting restlessly etc.

As a general practice all veterinary clinics are open during the specific hours of the day, but interestingly there are lots of clinics who have staff that work throughout the day in shifts. Moving ahead with these clinics have even their vet van which on demand can reach even at your place and start looking after the health of your pet without wasting any single moment. These vans are equipped with necessary equipments that are helpful in offering necessary treatment to your pet that is helpful in offering him immediate relaxation from his problem.

Unfortunately, if you are not able to locate any of the veterinary clinics offering emergency service then in that scenario you can even call to your veterinarian and seek his advice or collect information about the clinic from where you can get your pet treated on urgent basis.

What Are the Major Reasons For Getting a Non-Pregnancy?

Many couples suffer mental trauma as they are not able to have a child despite their will and efforts. The worst part of it is that they are not even able to fathom the reasons for such state of affairs. While there could be specific reasons in each such case as human anatomy is unique and requirements of every person vary from that of the other, there are certain common reasons that cause such infertility in women or men.

There is a misconception among many that infertility is characteristic of women alone while the truth is something else. Infertility syndrome could affect both men and women alike. It could be the case that the women are quite fertile while the man does not possess the power to make her pregnant due to some hormonal or other deficiencies. Hence it is good to have tests carried on by experienced physicians on both the husband and wife to find out the reasons for non-pregnancy.

Normally the control of hormone in the menstrual cycle of a woman is one of the most complex tasks one could carry out. Some of the conditions that can cause fertility problems in women are ovulation problems, age, and anatomical problems, blocked fallopian tubes, or cervical disorders. There could be several other such reasons but these are the ones that has major impact in creating infertility in women. However, if you are facing any such problem there is no reason to lose heart since appropriate treatments are now available for most of them. Medical science has made huge strides during the last few decades and physical disorders that were beyond comprehension in the past has now become easy prey for the doctors.

More than 25% of the women suffering from fertility problems have the reasons in ovulation problems. The ovarian cycle is a very complex factor and slight changes in it could disrupt the entire cycle and the ovulation. Hormonal imbalances could be other major reasons for infertility. This could be caused either by hormone deficiencies in your body or due to untimely discharge of hormone. Weight is a major factor for pregnancy. Either extremely low or high weight is both averse to your getting fast and safe pregnancy. Age is also a factor though it is the most natural phenomenon. Mostly people above the age of 35 to 40 suffer infertility due to age. Finally, blocked fallopian tubes can also cause such problems. They are blocked by past infections due to pelvic diseases or abdominal surgery and even sexually transmitted diseases.

Of course the best adviser would be your doctor and whenever you face a problem of this kind does not forget meeting him or her.

Lymphedema Research

In the past, lymphedema has been much ignored and little effort was made to carry out research on lymphedema. During the recent years, however, funding has been increased and researchers are more than willing to explore the causes responsible for the condition and to basically understand its nature. There is great progress in understanding the link between the lymphatic system and the other body systems; how it can be a cause for some of the maladies that we normally see in a patient. New studies have shown that all the processes in the body are intrinsically linked to the lymphatic system. According to recent studies, malfunctioning of the lymphatic system is also the root cause for many a disease.

The research on the subject of lymphedema as a whole is mainly focused on recognizing how a person's overall health is affected by this health condition. The growth of the lymphatic system is studied to understand what measures must be taken to improve the condition. Researchers are exploring the possibility of finding a cure for lymphedema, which, till now had never been done. New methods of treatment to restore the strength of the lymphatic system are also being investigated. Lymphedema research is encouraged in the recent times. Worldwide, numerous scientific bodies and laboratories are making new discoveries in the treatment methods for lymphedema.

There have been positive results with studies pertaining to the genetic development of the lymphatic system. A new molecule which is said to block the progress of lymphedema has been identified as recently as August 2009 by researchers of the University of Kentucky. Skin ailments caused due to chronic lymphedema are another aspect of the research. Researchers have been working continually to find a cure for the ailment as well as newer methods of treatment for prevention of the condition.

Until recently, doctors advised breast cancer survivors to avoid lifting heavy objects as well as exercise. The latest lymphedema research however, defies this whole theory and instead says that exercises like weight lifting may actually benefit women who have had mastectomy. A controlled weight lifting exercise routine is good to keep up the circulation in the arm according to this research. However, the recommendation is to lift weights while wearing the compression garment. The report also cautions women to undertake the exercise under supervision of a trained fitness professional.

Research centers in countries like USA, UK, Poland, Italy, Australia and European countries are striving to find the origin for lymphedema. In the past four years, they have been successful in isolating two genes that are believed to be the cause for lymphedema. Asian countries like Korea and China are also working in the field of lymphedema research, but their findings have not been published. Continuing research may, one day find a cure for lymphedema or at least find a way to make the treatment more effective.

At Hand Tips to Stop Panic Attacks

Anybody can experience a panic attack at some point or another in their lives, even if suffering of a panic disorder or not. It's useful to learn some basic methods of stopping a panic attack in case it hits you when you least expect it. You probably have heard before about the breathing techniques that offer relief in such cases. Find out now exactly what they are and how to put them in practice.

Everybody says to take a deep breath, but contrary to the common belief, deep breath is not of help. Slow breaths are the ones that stop an attack. Deep breathing only makes it more difficult for you to breathe at all. Correct breathing comes from the diaphragm. Sit on your back and put one hand on your chest and the other one on your stomach in order to makes sure you are doing this correctly.

Start breathing and let your stomach go up and down as you do that. The hand on it is able to tell you if you breathe from your diaphragm, while the hand on your chest tells you if you are also using your chest. If both conditions are accomplished, you are breathing correctly. Do this exercise daily and if a panic attack occurs you will not feel like you are going to suffocate anymore.

Do your best to have a positive mindset. Keep on telling you that there is no need to panic and that you are completely relaxed. This will help you in stopping panic attacks right before happening. These tips can turn out to be very useful in attenuating the attack. However keep in mind that if you are experiencing frequent attacks you have to go to a specialist, as your condition might be more severe than you think.

Side effects of steroids can be following: Cardiomyopathy (typically a chronic disorder of the heart muscle, which may include hypertrophy and obstructive damage of the heart), myocardial infarction, heart attack, brain attack and cerebro-vascular damage may also occur.

Anabolic steroids affect the liver. They can lead to cholestatic jaundice, hepatocellular hyperplasia (an increase of atypical epithelial cells), and cancer. Kidney disease and / or cancer may develop as side effects of steroids.

Supporting-motor system of a woman suffers too from side effects of steroids. Tendons rupture will occur often as muscle strength is growing so rapidly that the tendons and ligaments are unable to keep up with it. Female reproductive system is on the line of fire. As circulating testosterone is increasing, levels of estrogen and progesterone are decreasing. Side effects of steroids can lead to inhibition of the follicle forming, ovulation and menstrual irregularities, which can lead to amenorrhea (absence or suppression of the menstrual cycle).

The study for side effects of steroids, held in 9 women weightlifters, showed that 2 women experienced menstrual disorders. A pregnant woman using steroids can cause great damage to her child, causing growth retardation. Infertility may also be the result of prolonged use of anabolic steroids. Other negative side effects of steroids include bad breath, water retention, muscle cramps, nosebleeds, insomnia.

How Motivated People Grow

Motivated & Unmotivated Individuals

It is not at all uncommon to hear people complain about their job as being boring or as if they are stuck in a rut. These individuals go about the daily routine just going through the motions, often disliking their job and not feeling very good about themselves, their abilities or their potential.

The opposite type of individual is someone who is personally motivated. These people look at a job for its potential and they strive to learn as much as possible, experience as much as they can and develop as many skills as possible to the fullest extent. They see their job as a stepping stone and not a final destination.

The Difference

The exciting thing about people is that the first type of employee, the unmotivated complainer, can change to become a motivated individual. This all starts by setting small goals and seeing those goals provide a positive impact on your life.

Motivation of this type, which is internal and personal, is very powerful in creating the opportunities to grow. By tasking yourself with a series of growth challenges, you will find ways to become better at your job or to develop the skill set needed to find the job you have always wanted.

Getting Started with Growth

The first thing that anyone that wants to use motivation to grow has to do is to develop a roadmap for their life. It should include both personal and professional goals. These goals represent the things you want to do, not the things you feel obligated to do.

Write these things down as your final goals. Then, look for small mini-goals you can set to help you to achieve the big goal. For example, if you wanted to learn to speak another language, you first need to find a class, sign up for the class, attend the classes and so on. Clearly define each step in your goal, setting a timeline to accomplish each mini-goal. This type of strategizing can make the difference between growing substantially and not growing at all.

As you work through the mini-goals, you will find your level of motivation increases. You will start experiencing a change in the way you see your situation, with opportunities to expand your growth in different areas of life. You will also strengthen your will power which will help you create motivational habits that turn into long-term success.

The Emotional Recovery from a Heart Attack

Copyright (c) 2009 Stephen Lau

A heart attack is one of the most devastating and traumatic experiences in life. At least 1.5 million Americans suffer a first or recurrent heart attack every year. Heart attacks are often an indication of advanced coronary heart disease, which is the Number One cause of death in the United States. Attacks occur when oxygen is unable to be delivered to some parts of the heart due to blockage in one or more of the coronary arteries.

Unfortunately, about half a million of those suffering from heart attacks do not survive. And those who are lucky enough to survive may also undergo emotional turmoil that affects their recovery from these attacks.

Indeed, many heart-attack survivors are beset by the emotional feeling of fear – fear of imminent death or fear of a recurrent attack soon. The fear may become so obsessive that they become oversensitive of even the smallest tinges in their bodies. For some, the fear has become so real that they are afraid of being left alone – and this often becomes an emotional anguish for themselves as well as their spouses and loved ones who take care of them.

A heart attack is often an emotional awakening to the frailty of health, or the reality of death. The realization of human mortality is similar to that experienced by the elderly as they approach their inevitable end. Although the confrontation with death can be motivating for some who subsequently decide to embark on a new lifestyle to improve their overall health, the realization of the mortality of life can be debilitating to the majority of survivors. This lack of motivation on many heart-attack survivors may interfere with the rehabilitation process, and thus making them more vulnerable to future attacks.

Most heart-attack survivors also undergo a phase in which they are angry with themselves about their attacks. One common scenario is that they may become angry even at those who are trying to help them. Another scenario is that they may feel injustice, such as “why me?”

In short, heart-attack survivors have to recover not only from the coronary heart disease itself but also from the emotions associated with a heart attack. Depression is common among heart-attack survivors. Accordingly, spouses and family members have to be more understanding of their mood swings and emotional outbursts in order to help them on the road to recovery from heart attacks.

A positive outlook of life may be the best remedy against depression and other distressing emotions. Self-reflection is able to promote positive lifestyle changes, which are critical to long-term recovery from heart attacks. It is important that being granted “a second chance in life” should become the driving force to learn valuable life lessons from a heart attack.

It is understandable that heart-attack survivors may still have lingering doubts and fears, but time resolves most feelings of anger, anxiety, fear, or depression. Once emotional recovery begins, recovery from a heart attack will duly follow, if accompanied by positive changes in lifestyle.

Prevention of Breast Tumors & Breast Cancer

There’s a medical term ‘Benign Breast Disease’ (BBD) which includes a host of breast problems for women. This category includes any type of abnormal breast tissue other than malignant. One condition includes breast tumors which are benign yet have from the normal breast tissue consistency.

There are a number of cystic conditions ‘lumped’ under the heading of fibrocystic breast disease. Symptoms may include pain known as mastalgia, heat, swelling and obvious tenderness. Pain and changes in breast tissue can be cyclical within the menstrual cycle, often triggered by low progesterone and high estrogens.

Recently there’s been more attention given to BBD being a risk factor for developing Breast Cancer (BC) and rightly so. Several causes of BBD are the same causes or risk factors for BC.

In several upcoming articles I’ll review the medical research from around the world. I spent almost 2 years writing two books, one on the optimization of thyroid hormones and the other on the autoimmune condition Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, and was amazed to find hundreds of articles on this subject of risk factors.

Here is an example of just one of them. The Lancet published an epidemiological study in 1975 which exposed a lower incidence of Breast Cancer in Japanese women compared with women from other parts of the world. The only variable the researchers could find was their higher intake of seafood and sea vegetables rich in iodine. There was a lot of speculation why this might be but it’s really only been over the last 35 years that we have a clearer understanding as to why.

I hesitate to start with the subject of iodine because it is one thing to take a food rich in iodine and quite another to take an iodine supplement. There is danger in this.

So I’ll wait a little and mention two other studies which I believe are very important. They are both similar and prove much the same point. One was out of Pisa, Italy, in 2008. They took 103 women with biopsied ductal cell breast carcinoma and before any intervention or treatment the women were checked for thyroid problems. They were evaluated through thyroid lab tests, physical exams and a thyroid ultrasound.

It turned out that 48% of them had various types of thyroid problems. The most prevalent was an enlarged thyroid gland termed a goiter. The most common cause of a goiter is an iodine deficiency or insufficiency. The less common cause is excess estrogen which blocks absorption of iodide into thyroid cells.

The second thyroid condition found was Hashimoto’s which is inflammation of the thyroid gland. There are a few theories about the cause of Hashimoto’s but the one which is most outstanding is the inflammation of thyroid cells being caused by an increased production of hydrogen peroxide inside the cells. This increased production is due to the hormone TSH or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone which, among other things, stimulates thyroid cells to make more hydrogen peroxide, a process required to convert iodide to iodine. This is necessary for the thyroid to make its hormones.

Normally once thyroid hormones are produced and enter the blood stream then TSH production will subside and so will the production of hydrogen peroxide inside the thyroid cells. But if there’s an iodide deficiency and the thyroid can’t make its hormones then TSH will remain elevated and continue to stimulate the cells to make more and more hydrogen peroxide.

These elevated levels of hydrogen peroxide lasting for years and decades eventually leads to irritation, inflammation and finally some degree of destruction. And as soon as the thyroid cells break apart and release hydrogen peroxide, enzymes and proteins you’ve got the makings for a thyroid autoimmune disease.

So what’s all this got to do with breast cancer and benign breast tumors?

Obviously the lack of iodide leads to various thyroid conditions including hypothyroidism since obviously the thyroid requires specific nutrients including iodide to make its hormones. No iodide no thyroid hormone production.

And so often where there’s a lack of iodide there’s a lack of iodine. Iodine has been proven to protect breast tissue from estrogens, estrogen mimicking chemicals, what are called Endocrine Distrupting Chemical and heavy metals.

Optimal thyroid hormones help to improve sex hormone binding globulin which lowers free estrogens, improves levels of progesterone (low progesterone is a risk factor) and helps to optimize the body’s metabolic rate. A lower metabolic rate causes easier weight gain and the primary source of non-glandular estrogen is fat. Even this form of estrogen stimulates estrogen receptors on breast tissue.

So until then, this is Dr. Alexander Haskell

Heart Attack – How Aspirin Helps

If you or a loved one has heart disease, heart attack prevention and treatment are very important subjects. Your physician may have recommended taking a low dose aspirin each day to avoid heart attack. You may have heard that you can increase your chances of survival during a heart attack by taking aspirin. But how?

How Can Aspirin Help in Heart Attack?

Imagine that you are sitting watching TV with your spouse. You begin to sense that your chest is heavy. It feels as though someone is tightening wide steel bands around you. You shift positions, but the feeling remains. You take a few deep breaths and try to relax, thinking it is stress. The pain begins to spread to your jaw and shoulder. You mention it to your spouse, who turns to look at you, dashes to the phone to call for an ambulance, and returns with an aspirin. “For your heart attack,” says your spouse. Why?

How can aspirin help in heart attack?

Heart Attack Scenario

A heart attack is an active, ongoing event. It is not something that begins and ends in five minutes. You can limit the damage done to your heart and body during this ongoing event by taking action immediately after the heart attack begins. Calling emergency services is one action step. Taking aspirin is a second action step.

Paramedics will arrive quickly when you call 911. They will give you oxygen and medication for your heart attack. They will monitor your blood pressure and heart rhythm to try to prevent heart attack complications. They will rush you to the emergency room of the nearest hospital.

Once you reach the Emergency Room, doctors and nurses will hurry to perform an EKG and blood tests to confirm or refute a heart attack diagnosis. If you are having a heart attack, doctors will usually try to open the blocked artery with angioplasty, a stent, or a drug.

But why take aspirin? If they are going to use all of these modern “miracle-workers” on you, how can aspirin help in heart attack?

Aspirin’s Role

Aspirin has been found to slow down platelets. Platelets are microscopic blood cells your body uses to trigger blood clotting. If you cut your finger, blood begins to flow from the cut. Immediately, platelets move to the cut finger and cause the blood to clot. If you were to take aspirin the moment you cut your finger, you would slow down the movement of platelets. The blood would continue to flow freely for a longer time.

You would need only a tiny amount of aspirin to slow down every tiny platelet in your bloodstream. You would have to take it quickly, though. The clotting of blood would increase minute by minute, so the sooner you took the aspirin, the better your chances of keeping the finger bleeding.

Of course, this would be foolish action in the case of a cut finger. You want the finger to stop bleeding. You want the blood to clot.

In heart attack, however, you do not want the blood to clot. The reason for most heart attacks is the rupture of plaque in a coronary artery. When the rupture occurs, the body senses injury and calls for platelets. The platelets hurry to trigger a blood clot, just as they will in a cut finger. As minutes pass, the clot grows larger and larger. It grows until it completely blocks the artery. Blood can no longer flow to the part of the heart served by that artery. Blood can no longer carry oxygen to the heart. Without oxygen, that part of the heart begins to die. The heart attack runs its course.

If aspirin is taken in the first few minutes of an attack, you slow down the rush of platelets, just as in our example of the cut finger. You make it more difficult for the blood to clot. You keep the blood flowing, carrying vital oxygen to the heart. You limit the risk of heart attack damage.

How to Take Aspirin for Heart Attack

1. QUICKLY: The most important thing is to take aspirin immediately if you sense you may be having a heart attack. Aspirin needs nearly 15 minutes to fully slow platelets. Get it into your blood stream quickly.

2. AMOUNT: Take one 325 mg. of aspirin for heart attack. Do not take two or three in hopes of getting better results. A smaller dose is actually more helpful than a larger dose.

3. TYPE: The aspirin must not be enteric-coated. The coating is added to keep aspirin from dissolving too quickly in your stomach. For heart attack, you want it to dissolve as quickly as possible. Even when chewed, enteric-coated aspirin have been found to dissolve too slowly. So be sure you always have at hand non-coated 325 mg. aspirin tablets.

4. CHEW: It is very important that you CHEW the aspirin. Do not swallow it whole. CHEW the aspirin at least 30 seconds before swallowing it. Chewing will reduce the tablet to small particles, ready for digestion. It will also stimulate saliva, which will start the digestion. CHEW.

In the October 1997 issue of “Circulation,” the American Heart Association (AHA) journal, it was reported that up to 10,000 more people annually could survive heart attack simply by chewing one 325 milligram aspirin tablet at the first chest pain or other heart attack symptom. Be prepared.

Why That Persistent Common Cold May Not Just Be Another Cold

We've all experienced the common cold with its nasal congestion, cough and runny nose. Some colds are worse than others and some progress into more serious illnesses. It is important to know the difference so that you can treat the problem most effectively.

The common cold is not usually a reason for concern. However, when a cold becomes persistent it may just mean that it has turned into a sinus infection. Many of the symptoms of a sinus infection are the same as those of the common cold. Nasal discharge, cough and sore throat can be symptoms of a cold or of sinusitis.

Sometimes what seems to be a cold is not a cold at all but a sinus infection or allergy instead. But how can you tell when what you are experiencing is a sinus infection? There are some telltale signs to look for.

To start with if you have sinusitis you will typically have a stuffy nose. The nasal passages become blocked with thick mucous. When the mucous does not move for a while it produces bacteria and that leads to infection. The stuffy nose associated with an infection is usually more severe than what you have with a cold. While a typically cold has some stuffiness it is typically not severe for longer than a day.

If you have a thick yellow or green nasal discharge this signals an infection. Usually nasal discharge is thin and clear. The thick mucous may not drain properly which can cause pressure and pain in sinuses and face. You may have a headache.

You may also develop a fever. A fever is the body's way of fighting an infection. The fever usually indicates infection is present. Chills can also accompany a fever. The fever is typically low-grade unless the infection becomes more severe. A high fever requires immediate attention by a doctor.

A sinus infection can cause the face to become painful to the touch. This is because the swollen nasal cavities are located on the face. The first place you may notice pain is on either side of the bridge of the nose but pain can be anywhere on the face. This type of pain does not accompany the common cold.

A typical cold usually lasts several days and then the symptoms improve. If after a few days the symptoms are not showing improvement or are worsening you may have more than a cold. Keep track of your symptoms so you can determine how your illness is progressing.

If your symptoms have worsened or you have developed a fever you should see a doctor. He can help to determine if the problem is a cold or if it is an infection. Sinus infection can usually be treated with antibiotics successfully, especially when they are caught early. The doctor will examine the nose. A red and swollen nasal passage suggests there may be an infection. If he can not tell for sure he may order a CT scan or MRI.
