High School Wrestling: Diet and Supplements

The nutritional plan that a wrestler follows can be a factor in his performance. Different foods supply different nutrients to our bodies. Although food is the most important element in your nutritional plan, supplements can also be a beneficial addition. Some wrestlers desire to lose weight. Some wrestlers do not need to lose weight. Regardless of whether or not a wrestler needs to lose weight, all wrestlers want to be strong and have sufficient energy.

Protein (4 calories per gram)

The body uses protein to perform many functions. I believe most of you know that one of protein’s main functions is building and repairing body tissues (e.g. muscle tissue). Proteins are composed of amino acids. Essential amino acids are amino acids that the body cannot make and must be provided by one’s diet. A complete protein supplies all of the essential amino acids. Most complete proteins come from animal sources. We are talking about meat, fish, fowl, milk, cheese, and eggs. Why is protein important for a wrestler? Wrestling is strenuous and can be catabolic (i.e. break down muscle tissue).

How much protein do you need? Some studies have suggested that athletes require more protein than a sedentary person does. Your diet should get about 25% of its calories from protein.

Good Sources of Protein:

  • lean beef
  • boneless, skinless chicken breast
  • lean pork
  • fish without breading
  • turkey
  • milk
  • yogurt
  • cheese
  • cottage cheese
  • eggs

An Interesting Fact about Cottage Cheese:

Cottage cheese contains a large amount of the milk protein called casein. In fact, cottage cheese is almost 100% unadulterated casein. Casein digests slowly in the body. Casein supplies a slow trickle of amino acids after being ingested. Therefore, if you eat some cottage cheese before bed you can receive a slow trickle of amino acids (i.e. protein) into your body throughout the night that could be anti-catabolic (i.e. prevent the breakdown of muscle tissue) while muscle tissue is being repaired during sleep.

Regarding Eggs:

Eggs have a Biological Value (BV) of 100. Our bodies utilize the protein contained in eggs very well. Even egg whites have a BV of 88. I don’t recommend eating only egg whites even if they are lower in fat and calories. I think nature made eggs to be eaten with the yolk and white as a package. A large whole egg contains about six grams of protein. Eggs are nutrient dense. If you’re concerned about calories, you can poach eggs or fry them in a non-stick pan. There are liquid egg white products if you prefer. Remember that it’s probably not a good idea to eat raw eggs like Rocky Balboa.

Regarding Beans:

Beans are interesting because they can be a good source of protein and carbohydrates. Beans also supply fiber that can help you feel full if you are trying to diet. Beans and rice are a popular combination for supplying a meal that includes all or close to all of the essential amino acids. Some experts consider the combination of beans and rice to be a complete protein.

A guy named Tim Ferriss advocates something he calls a “slow-carb” diet for weight loss. Beans and legumes are an important part of this diet plan. For example, one meal might consist of beef, pinto beans, and mixed vegetables. Another meal might consist of eggs, black beans, and mixed vegetables. The diet doesn’t include carbohydrates like breads, cereals, and fruits so it’s not really a good diet for a wrestler. I just thought it was interesting as a weight loss option and because of its reliance on beans and legumes.

Carbohydrates (4 calories per gram)

Carbohydrates are the body’s preferred source of fuel. In other words, carbohydrates provide you with energy. Wrestling practice and competition obviously require a lot of energy. Therefore, make sure to include plenty of carbohydrates in your diet. Carbohydrates get broken down into glucose and other sugars. Glucose is your brain’s preferred fuel source. Much of this glucose gets stored in your muscles in the form of glycogen. Glycogen is then used as a source of energy. Your diet should derive about 60% of its calories from carbohydrates. There are complex carbohydrates like breads and cereals and simple carbohydrates like fruit. Educate yourself.

Good Sources of Carbohydrates:

  • breads
  • bagels
  • muffins
  • pancakes
  • cereals
  • rice
  • pasta
  • potatoes
  • sweet potatoes
  • fruits
  • vegetables

When I wrestled in high school, I ate a lot of carbohydrates. For instance, I actually ate a lot of rice cakes. I figured I could eat five rice cakes for about the same number of calories in one can of soda. I know you probably think they taste like Styrofoam but I became used to them. I also ate many potatoes without butter, salt, or any other condiments. I ate many bowls of plain oatmeal. I became accustomed to eating a simple diet. Of course, I still had a Pop-Tart or candy bar occasionally.

In Regards to Fruits and Vegetables:

Why eat a candy bar when you could eat two large apples for about the same number of calories? That was my thinking back in high school when I was dieting for wrestling. Fruits and vegetables are often fat free, low in calories, high in water content, high in fiber, and rich in nutrients like antioxidants. I ate many servings of green beans back then. I had an apple or two almost every day. I could eat a large amount of food for a small amount of calories.

Fat (9 calories per gram)

Fats provide twice the number of calories per gram as proteins and carbohydrates. Therefore, you don’t want to consume too much fat. However, you should not eliminate fat entirely from your diet. Your diet should derive about 15% of it’s calories from fats. Fats do many important things in our bodies. Fats build healthy cell membranes. Fats help to make hormones like testosterone. Your brain is approximately sixty percent fat. Some fats can help make your skin smooth and healthy. Moreover, fat cushions your body organs.

You’ve probably heard about the many types of fats such as saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, hydrogenated, and trans fats. Dr. Eric Serrano believes that saturated, polyunsaturated, and monounsaturated fats are all important. However, he recommends avoiding hydrogenated fats altogether. You may want to research fats and essential fatty acids. You may also want to perform an online search for Dr. Eric Serrano, Udo Erasmus, Dr. Bill Sears, and Dr. Joseph Mercola in regards to healthy fats.

Some Good Sources of Fat to Consider:

  • extra virgin olive oil
  • flax oil
  • fish oil
  • cod liver oil
  • peanut butter
  • nuts
  • virgin coconut oil
  • avocados

Don’t be afraid to eat whole eggs, lean red meat, salmon, tuna, and even a bit of butter occasionally. Coconut oil is a saturated fat. However, if you do some research regarding virgin coconut oil you will find out it that it has many potential health benefits. In addition, remember to limit or avoid hydrogenated fats and trans fats.

I was advised at a wrestling camp to try to eat a diet of about 80% healthy food and 20% unhealthy food during wrestling season. I guess they figured nobody could eat healthy 100% of the time. That may be sound advice.

In the book Blood in the Cage, author L. Jon Wertheim writes about Pat Miletich, a former wrestler and former UFC champion. Pat and most of his fighters follow something called Miletich’s “fighter’s diet” when a competition is drawing near. This diet consists mainly of oatmeal, eggs, and skinless, boneless chicken.

Fast Food Tips:

  • Have water or milk instead of pop
  • Have grilled chicken in sandwiches and soft shell tacos
  • Have grilled chicken breast, lean roast beef, and lean ham on sub sandwiches
  • Have a garden salad with minimal dressing
  • Have a baked potato without butter, sour cream, or cheese
  • Have a small hamburger without cheese, bacon, or mayonnaise
  • Avoid deep-fried, breaded, and batter-dipped foods

Keep in mind:

  • One pound equals approximately 3,500 calories
  • If you cut 500 calories a day from your diet you will lose approximately one pound per week
  • A simple way to determine the number of calories you need to eat per day to lose weight is to take your current bodyweight times 10 (e.g. 150 X 10 = 1,500 calories)
  • A simple way to determine the number of calories you need to eat per day to maintain weight is to take your current bodyweight times 15 (e.g. 130 X 15 = 1,950 calories)
  • A calorie-counting book and a food scale may be helpful; read nutrition labels
  • Try to avoid empty calories like you find in soda pop and candy
  • Keep your pre-competition meal light and carbohydrate based

I don’t recommend cutting weight or starving. You need food to fuel your body. In addition, drink plenty of fluids so that do not become dehydrated. If you choose to lose weight, do it slowly and carefully. You don’t want to lose muscle tissue and strength. In addition, you need energy for hard practices.

If you are Vegetarian or Vegan:

Strength coach Mike Mahler is a vegan (i.e. eats no animal products whatsoever) and yet he is big and strong. Some staples in his diet include nuts, seeds, peanut butter, almond butter, beans, lentils, vegetables, coconut milk, healthy fats like olive oil, and rice protein powder.

Pre-Competition Meal:

As far as your pre-competition meal goes, keep it familiar. That is not a time to try new foods. Keep it light and carbohydrate based so you have energy. A heavier meal with more fat will be slower to digest. On the other hand, your pre-competition meal should be something that you enjoy. I think I read somewhere that boxer Sugar Ray Leonard liked to have a cheeseburger before a big fight. I wouldn’t recommend that, but it seemed to work fine for him. Olympic champion speed skater Bonnie Blair’s pre-race meal was always a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I had a friend in high school that had one of his highest scoring basketball games after a meal of several bowls of chili. Personally, I always liked to have pancakes before a competition. For some people that would probably sit too heavy in their stomach. I liked to have jelly sandwiches and Pop-Tarts at wrestling tournaments if I needed something between matches. Find what works for you.

Supplements to Consider:

  • Multivitamin – to cover anything you might miss in your diet
  • Meal Replacement Products (MRPs) – shakes like Myoplex and Met-Rx provide protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals if you don’t have time to eat a meal
  • Whey protein – whey protein is absorbed quickly by the body and is ideal for a post workout shake
  • Glutamine – may help you maintain muscle if dieting; improves immune function
  • Creatine monohydrate – supplies energy to your muscles; make sure you stay hydrated if you use this supplement
  • Branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) – may help with recovery and repair
  • Inosine – may give you greater endurance by supporting the regeneration of ATP
  • HMB – may help slow the breakdown of muscle tissue (i.e. anti-catabolic)
  • Beta-alanine – may help improve your work capacity via it’s ability to buffer lactic acid
  • Caffeine – can increase energy and alertness

You probably don’t need to supplement at all. Eat a healthy diet with a variety of foods and stay hydrated. That will do more for you than any supplement ever can. In addition, supplements can be costly. Moreover, some supplements work for one wrestler and not for another. Therefore, if you choose to use supplements be cautious and be careful. Do some research about the potential benefits and dangers of any supplement before using it.

I am not a nutritionist or dietitian. I am not an expert on dietary supplements. Read articles and books pertaining to nutrition and supplements. I have simply provided a rough guide to help you get started. Remember that you need fuel for your body to function well. That fuel is food. Therefore, make sure that make smart dietary choices on your path to wrestling success.

How to Come Up With Effective Clinic KPI

There is a truism that goes “anything that cannot be measured is unmanageable”. And it has never been truer today. In a world of fierce competition, every company that runs on profit should measure the effectiveness and success rate of every aspect in the business. This statement holds true also for clinics, hospitals, and other medical facilities. The same strategy that helped manufacturers and common businesses thrive has now become a major business operational tool for the medical industry, particularly for clinic management and customer service evaluation. The use of key performance indicators and metric systems for medical facilities is not for revenue purposes only, but also for clinical standards. Indeed, the use of clinic KPI is fast becoming a standard for medical business operation.

At a glance, one might say that it is easy to measure the performance of a clinic through sanitation and involvement in charity projects. In reality, there is more to just measuring cleanliness and active participation in community works. Government health authorities require clinics to comply with the national standards or accreditation tests. One purpose of clinic key performance indicators then is to see how compliant the clinic is towards obtaining government accreditation. Facilities, which do not have sufficient equipment, will not receive accreditation from the government. The government pursues this so that all clinics will provide the same health care quality across all markets.

And since government health authorities mandate stringent compliance to the accreditation tests, most clinics base and refer their key performance indicators on the accreditation levels. There are also other accrediting bodies, which are independent of the government. They may provide KPI basis for clinics. Either way, clinics should align their services and products satisfactorily to the requirements of the accreditation bodies.

Safety should always be at the top priority of clinics. This is precisely why clinics should provide not only clean but also conducive environment for the patients. There should also be sufficient and well-qualified clinic staff that will attend to the needs of the customers. Safety also covers medical prescription and administration. A sample KPI in this subject may include the evaluation of cases when patients suffer from over dosages. A review of medicine administration, dosaging, and successful treatments, is another possible KPI.

Interviewing present and previous patients may also help provide possible key performance indicators. Even questionnaires, surveys, and evaluation forms are resources that will help clinic managers come up with practical KPIs. Complaints like late administration of drugs or unaccommodating staff may call for a few changes in the clinic.

The clinic manager may also draw possible key performance indicators from the facility itself. Questions like “is there enough space for every patient”; “does the clinic sufficiently allow patient visitors”, “and is the clinic properly ventilated” can provide hints on what the clinic can do to improve its services.

Sales and accounting may be the least metrics that managers can include in the clinic KPI. Nevertheless, clinic managers should give importance to these financial aspects since this is where the blood of clinical operation runs. Clinic operators, therefore, should consider safety, accreditation compliance, and financial administration in order to come up with a balanced, functional, and results-driven scorecard system.

Parvo – The Deadly Puppy Disease

This is the first in a series of articles on the deadly disease, Canine Parvovirus. Make no mistake; your dog — especially if it is a puppy — is at risk from this disease. Future articles in this series will be somewhat graphic, but this information is too important not to share. If I manage to scare you, that’s good. Hopefully it will save your best friend’s life.

It is currently the most infectious disease dogs in the United States face today. It affects dogs, wolves, foxes and other members of the canine family. It is HIGHLY contagious, and often fatal.

Parvo was first discovered in 1967 (CPV-1), but seemed to only be a threat to newborn puppies. By 1978, it had mutated into CPV-2. This virus is shed in huge numbers by infected dogs, and is extremely hardy in the environment; able to withstand not only freezing temperatures, but extreme heat as well. It can survive on inanimate objects — such as your clothes, shoes, furniture, cage floors — for 5 months or more, and is believed to survive for up to 9 months in the soil. This is how it was able to spread worldwide within 2 years of its discovery. Parvo is believed to exist in EVERY environment unless that environment is regularly disinfected. In 1980, CPV-2 mutated once again into CPV-2A, and in 1985, into CPV-2B. It is believed there are other strains beginning to emerge which haven’t yet been identified.

Parvo is a viral disease that likes to grow in rapidly dividing cells, which is why it is so much more devastating to puppies and adolescent dogs than in adults. Following ingestion, the virus generally settles and begins replicating in the lymph tissue in the throat. After a couple of days, so much of the virus has been produced that significant amounts have been released into the bloodstream. Over the next 3-4 days, the virus seeks new organs containing rapidly dividing cells — especially the lymph nodes, intestine and bone marrow. The intestinal lining has the biggest concentration of rapidly dividing cells in a puppy’s body. Although less common, Parvo can also attack the heart muscle leading to sudden death.

Within the bone marrow, Parvo destroys immune system cells blocking your puppy’s defense. Parvo infection always results in a drop in white blood cell count. The most severe damage occurs in the intestine. Parvo strikes at the source of new cells, preventing the creation of new cells and the absorption of nutrients from the food your puppy eats.

Parvo is far more common than you might suspect. It is believed that virtually EVERY dog comes in contact with Parvovirus at some point in its lifetime. Many dogs that are infected — possibly as much as 80% — will never become symptomatic. At the opposite end of the spectrum, severe Parvo can kill a puppy within 48 to 72 hours. Also, certain breeds are more susceptible — Rotties, Dobermans, and other black/tan dogs seem to top the list of those most likely to die from Parvo.

Anxiety Attacks – Natasha Mclean

Anxiety attacks are fundamentally a response to danger and consist of three components.  Many people believe that anxiety is a prolonged nervous condition of feeling worried or stressed but in fact the function of the anxiety response is to deal with danger through the body’s fight or flight reaction. The unpleasant physical changes involved in this reaction include increased heart rate, quickened breathing, sweating, trembling, flushes, stomach churning and nausea.

The second part of anxiety attacks response is the behavioural aspect. For example say if you were threatened with an attack while you were walking to your car after work, first you would feel the physical aspects of anxiety as mentioned above; you then may choose to run or fight your attacker (fight/flight) then as a behavioural response you may change where you park your car at night.

The difference between humans and animals lies in the third part of the anxiety response, the thinking or psychological part. Humans will not get anxious unless they think they are in danger. Anxiety becomes a problem when our thinking about a situation becomes unrealistic by overestimating the danger we face. When a person repeatedly overestimates the real danger of situations, either the likelihood or how bad the consequences would be, problematic anxiety is the result i.e. anxiety attacks.

As a result of the psychological and physical consequences of anxiety attacks people may change their behaviour. They may be too afraid to do things that might make the anxiety worse and develop ways to avoid situations that they fear. They might ask for frequent reassurances from others that things are OK. They might be too frightened to do things alone or be very concerned about certain everyday situations or objects.  People who know them may notice they appear tired, since anxiety will keep people up at night.  Constant anxiety can lead to depression.

When a person begins to avoid activities of daily living, or activities they used to enjoy, anxiety can take over their life, interfering with work, family and social life.

Penis Health Resolutions for the New Year

As the new year dawns, people take stock of their lives and make resolutions that will hopefully have a positive impact on their lives. Maybe it’s time to consider some resolutions that can have an impact on penis health or sexual health? Even men who already practice decent penis health routines may benefit from thinking about what more they can do in this important area of their lives.

Here are some sexual health resolutions some men may want to consider. These are just a starting point, so feel free to add to them!

– Always use a condom. Unless a man is in a monogamous relationship, he definitely needs to use a condom – and even in a monogamous relationship, condoms should be employed if either partner has an existing transmissible disease or infection. Preventing STIs is arguably the most important thing a man can do for his sexual health.

– Don’t be afraid of the doctor. Men in general are less likely to visit a doctor than are women, and this seems to be especially the case when it comes to sexual health issues. A guy may notice a sore or blister on his penis and choose to not see a doctor because he’s afraid of what it may mean. Yet even when such signs lead to a diagnosis of an STI, it’s much better to know this information so appropriate treatment can be started to address the problem.

But regular visits to the doctor are important for sexual health even when the focus is not on the penis. Check-ups help the doctor keep a man’s heart healthy, his blood pressure in line, etc. – factors which impact his sexual health, even if the penis doesn’t seem to be directly involved. So don’t be afraid to check in with a physician regularly.

– Watch stress. Stress is one of the factors that can have a really big impact on sexual health (and health in general). Tension and anxiety have become increasing problems for men, and when a guy feels stressed, he may not have the sexual ability and/or drive that he would otherwise. Finding ways to relax, whether it’s through meditation, yoga, exercise or other means, is a great gift to give oneself.

– Use it. Since sex is on men’s minds a lot, it may seem odd to recommend that a man engage in sex more often. But sometimes men – either by choice or necessity – may experience lengthy stretches with no sex. But studies show the penis needs exercise just like other body parts in order to remain healthy. Some men feel guilty about masturbating, but solo activity can help to keep the penis in better health – and it’s one of the more enjoyable forms of exercise around!

– Watch the vices. Guys who are smokers or heavy drinkers should seriously work on cutting out the former and cutting down on the latter. Both of these activities have been shown to negatively affect penis health and performance.

– Crème it. A man’s sexual health is linked to his penis health, so one of the most important resolutions is to apply a superior penis health crème (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil, which is clinically proven mild and safe for skin) to the penis. A good penis health crème can help the penis look appealing, especially where the skin is concerned. When the crème contains a high-end emollient (such as Shea butter) and a natural hydrator (such as vitamin E), the skin will be well moisturized and supple, rather than dry and patchy. If the crème also contains vitamin C, it will give a boost to collagen production, which is essential for penis health and firmness, making a man’s penis present in an even more impressive fashion.

Film Treatment Format

There is no magical formula for writing a film treatment format. Format the film treatment according to its intended audience. There are two main audiences, the audience who will ultimately view the film and the audience person or people who will initially judge its merit. Additionally, the executive will take serious consideration into how well the audience will like the completed film.

The following elements of the film treatment format considered:

• Font name and size, spacing

• Language

• Page numbering

• Length of the treatment

• Quotation marks

• Character names

• Margins

• Binding

• Information contained on the first page

Font – Adopt an easy-to-read font in the film treatment format. Most of the well-established producers prefer Courier New, 12-point typeface, although Times New Roman or Arial will also suffice. Do not indent the paragraphs simply include a double space between them. Single spacing is used everywhere else.

Language – Use present tense throughout and write in first person. Make use of powerful words that convey a whole lot of meaning. Make the reader feel as if he is viewing a trailer of the screenplay and not reading a treatment. Write in paragraphs unlike screenplays that follow definite structure. Treatments reflect the tone of the script – whether it is humorous, romantic, ironical etc. Film treatment format requires every paragraph to be short and light.

Page numbering – The page number should appear as a header on the top right hand corner. The front page is left un-numbered.

Length – Ideally the length of a treatment should not exceed 15 pages. The accepted norm is 5 –12 pages. There are variations in this depending upon the genre of the treatment. A drama may be longer while a comedy is shorter in length. It all depends upon how many details you would like to include which in turn, depends upon the purpose of the treatment

Quotation marks – Unlike scripts, quotation marks are used to show dialogues in treatments.

Character names – The first time a character’s name appears, it should be entirely in capital letters.

Margins – Like a screenplay, a film treatment format too requires it to be written on 81/2 x 11 inch, three hole punched paper. The top and bottom margins vary between.5 – 1 inch, left margin is between 1.2 – 1.6 inches and the right margin is between.5 – 1 inch. The extra inch in the left side is to give a balanced look to the print. There are no hard and fast rules regarding the margins.

Binding – The three holes are used for binding with brads.

Front page – This should contain vital information such as a working title, author’s name and contact information, WGA number, a log line, and the total number of pages.

Executives are busy so keep the treatment brief and include all the key points only. Do not go into unnecessary details. A couple of carefully chosen words will suffice to convey the story to these people. In case you are planning to use it as a road map or for a friend whom you would like to involve, be as descriptive as possible, without being too stringent regarding following the norms laid down by the industry.

Steps to Diagnose Connection Problems in Netgear Wireless Router

The article explains the steps that can be taken to diagnose and resolve connection issues in Netgear wireless router. The methods compiled here are simple and correct until date. It is strongly recommended that users follow the instructions carefully to avoid running into problems. This will eventually save them time as well as money that would other be spent contacting Netgear router support.

Netgear wireless routers are known for their excellent wireless speed and performance. Despite that, these may create internet or wireless problems at times due to several reasons including recently made changes to the computer or device settings, connection problem, and outdated drivers among others. The below mentioned guide will help you scan as well as fix the connection issues on your own and without the help of Netgear technical support.

Turn off all the devices including computer, router, and the modem respectively in the order and wait for a few seconds (20-30 seconds). Thereafter turn them back on in the same order. Connect to the internet and check whether the problem has been fixed or not. This is the simplest and most widely used method to resolve common connection problems as it clears up the existing settings and starts a fresh connection.

If the previous method didn’t fix your problem, then check this out. Update the router driver(s) by visiting the Netgear website. Check if any updates are available to download for the drivers. If there are, download and install them. If prompted, reboot all the devices. Besides, run Windows Update and similarly download and install all the latest updates. Restart the computer when prompted. Upgrade the router’s firmware also.

First check, whether you can connect to the internet on a wired connection or not. Make your wireless computer a wired one by connecting the Ethernet cable to your computer and router. If internet works on the wired one but not on the wireless, then you can follow any of these steps mentioned here. However, if internet doesn’t connect on the wired computer, then this can be considered as the root cause of the problem. Take corrective steps to resolve this problem and then move on to the wireless connection problem. One of these steps include checking the cables etc. whether these are firmly placed in or not. These should not be broken or damaged that may be causing your connection to drop repeatedly. If everything is fine on your end and you are still not able to go online, contact your internet service provider (ISP).

Login to the router’s interface (you will be required to make a wired connection to logon) and review the settings. To do so, open your internet browser and type ‘’ (without quotes) in the address bar. Hit the Enter key on the keyboard to proceed. When prompted for login credentials, enter this in and hit Enter again. Review the settings and if required modify them. For example, assign or change SSID, channel numbers, mode, security key WEP or WPA, and/or access point etc.

If you recently made changes to your computer, undo these by restoring the computer to an earlier point in time when things were fine. It should resolve the issue caused by the changes.

Additional Tips:

If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 1 (SP1), then upgrade it to SP2 or SP3. It has been strongly recommended to upgrade to the latest SPs to avoid facing wireless connection drop problems.

High Heels – You Know You Shouldn't Wear Them

Women know high heels are not good for their feet, and they don’t deny that they’re uncomfortable. But women will continue to wear high heels and you can mark it up to the price of beauty.

The truth is, feet are not made to wear heels. And you may be underestimating the damage that high heels can cause, beyond just having sore feet.

Not surprisingly, doctors of podiatric medicine (foot doctors) see no value in high heels, which they generally define as pumps with heels of more than two inches.

High heels are “biomechanically and orthopedically unsound,” according to the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Common ailments from wearing high heels include calluses and heel pain, bunions, hammertoes, nerve problems that cause shooting pain into the toes, ingrown toenails and even stress fractures.

Women also complain about such conditions as bunions, hammertoes, nerve problems that cause shooting pain into the toes; ingrown toenails; and even stress fractures.

Nail problems also are common from the constant pressure of toes being pressed against the end of the shoe. That can cause the nail to thicken and promote the growth of foul-smelling fungus. Plus, if a person has curved toenails, it can induce or exacerbate painful in-grown nails.

If you simply must wear high heels, then limit the time you wear them. Alternate between high heel and low heel shoes to prevent the Achilles tendon from tightening. Wearing flatter shoes or tennis shoes for walking long distances, such as to and from the office and then changing into your heels once you get to work. Use heels with a quality insole designed to provide cushioning and arch support to maintain proper alignment and balance.

Common Household Signs That Your Child May Be On Drugs

Do you ever find your ballpoint pens missing? What happened to those large plastic pop bottles that you thought you threw into the recycling bin? Why are so many spoons missing from your cutlery drawer in the kitchen?

Have any of your kitchen or bathroom faucets lost their filters? What about your window screens? Do they have any missing chunks? Do you ever walk into the bathroom and become overwhelmed by the scent of heavily-sprayed perfume?

Kids are amazingly resourceful when it comes to creating methods of ingesting drugs. They don’t need to go to a “head shop” to find these tools. Everything they need can be found in the home. As parents, you really need to be aware of these signs.

Have you ever gone to the fridge to find an entire cake gutted from the inside? Have you ever found incredible amounts of junk food missing from your pantry?

Has money ever gone missing from your wallet or purse? Do your other children ever complain that stuff is missing from their rooms? Do you ever walk around your home and notice certain things that just make you go, “Huh?”

Chances are that you are NOT losing your mind. If you have any concern that your child may be abusing drugs, please pay attention to these very common household signs.

Everyday household stuff can easily be used for making drug paraphernalia. More expensive items like bicycles, musical instruments and iPods can be sold or hawked to pay their dealers.

What is my son or daughter using the pens, pop bottles and mesh filters for?

Kids frequently use these items to make bongs. Bongs are pipes used as a method to inhale marijuana and/or hashish through a water filter. Some kids think this is a purer way to filter out the harmful carcinogens that marijuana and hashish contain. Some of them consider this to be a healthier “high.”

There are hundreds of thousands of places via a Google search on the internet where they can learn how to build these homemade pipes.

As a substitute for pop bottles, they will use the glass from hurricane lamps, large jars, soda cans and just about anything else that can provide a “chamber.”

What happened to all of my spoons and candles?

Spoons and candles can be used in a variety of different ways to ingest drugs. Sometimes, hashish oil is heated in an everyday teaspoon over a lit candle and inhaled (through the hollow tube of a pen.) Spoons are also used for mixing and injecting stronger drugs like methamphetamine (meth, ice), but sadly, by the time your child reaches that stage, you will likely be aware of it already.

I could have sworn I had a pair of diamond earrings in my jewellery box.

Nothing in your house is sacred when you have a child heavily influenced by drugs. Yes, they will steal from their own mother. Check your valuables every once in a while. If stuff starts to disappear, start asking questions.

What happened to that cake I had in the fridge? It looks like a pack of animals got at it.

No, that wasn’t a pack of animals. It was likely your son or daughter coming down from a high, desperately needing a fix of sugar. They didn’t use a fork. They used their hands. They also prepared and consumed three packages of Kraft macaroni and cheese all at once.

I left my purse on the kitchen counter and now $50 is missing.

You’re not imagining this. Even in your own household, you are vulnerable to theft from the child who is addicted to drugs. Your other children are also extremely vulnerable. They may not want to tell you, but they may suspect their brother or sister is stealing from them.

Often, there are no obvious red flags to alert us that our children have already started down the path to drug hell. As parents, we have to look at the subtleties.

Look around you. Look around your house. If something doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t. Keep track of your stuff. Don’t listen to the “dog ate my homework” story.

For the sake of your beloved child and yourself, don’t ignore these common household signs of possible drug abuse. Your child may already be feeling out of control.

Use these early opportunities to take a stand. If you really don’t feel right about something that’s going on right under your roof, trust your gut instinct and address it now.

Your son’s or daughter’s life may depend on it.

Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment for Costochondritis

Costochondritis is a medical condition in which there is severe or moderate type of pain which is localised to the chest and usually seen on the rib joints. The pain is aggravated by movement and deep breathing. Costochondritis is usually caused due to repeated, minor trauma or unaccustomed heavy activity. The affected costo-chondral joints are tender to touch and pressure. Anti-inflammatory treatment and pain killers, local application of ointments, adequate rest, graded physical activity, and avoidance of heavy activity form the conservative management of this condition.

Even under normal circumstances, minor trauma to the ribs causes pain which usually lasts for about four to six weeks in spite of taking conventional treatment. Costochondritis, which is inflammation of the joints of the ribs, is usually quite refractory to treatment and this experience can be frustrating both to the affected individual as well as to the treating physician. This condition responds completely to treatment only if the causative factors are examined well and efforts are made to address these issues in a comprehensive manner.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment for costochondritis is aimed at giving anti-inflammatory medicines to treat the basic disorder, control pain and tenderness, and also strengthen the costo-chondral joints, so as to avoid recurrence of this situation. Treatment is given in different stages, with control of pain and inflammation forming the first stage. This can be done with oral medication and supplemented by local application of medicines in the form of ointments, pastes, and medicated oils. Local application is usually followed by steam fomentation using herbal decoctions. The application of anti-inflammatory herbal pastes also provides long-term relief from pain and tenderness.

Once pain, swelling and tenderness are brought under control, some medicines with an anti-inflammatory action are continued in a low dose and in addition to these medications, herbal medicines are added which provide a strengthening action to these small joints as well as the ribs and muscles connecting the ribs. This strengthening action provides long-term relief from pain and also helps the affected individual to avoid a recurrence of this situation, as well as develop more tolerance for unaccustomed activity and occupational seating postures.

Some affected individuals do not respond satisfactorily even with the above mentioned treatments. In these situations, it is important to look for other factors which prevent a complete therapeutic response. Stress, depression, generalized weakness and long-term fatigue are some of the factors responsible for this situation. The specific cause needs to be identified and treated with specific medicines. In addition, medicines may also be required to treat depression, stress, and weakness. Herbal medicines which have an immunomodulatory action and which provide long-term strength and vitality to the body are especially useful in this condition.

Such individuals need to develop a daily schedule of regular exercise, relaxation techniques, eat healthy food regularly at prescribed times, and obtain adequate rest and sleep. Meditation, Yogasanas and breathing techniques like Pranayam may also help to achieve control from pain, or reduce sensitivity to pain. Non-irritating and strengthening medicated oils can also be applied on the tender costo-chondral joints on a long term basis, so as to provide complete relief from costochondritis.

Nail Fungus – the Dmso Factor

Nail Fungus – The DMSO factor

A nail fungus infection is a condition called onychomycosis. It is the most common nail problem with about 20 – 40 million Americans being affected. The main concern is the nail discoloration (usually yellow or brown) and change in nail texture and growth. Nail fungus can make the nail thick or can become crumbly, break easily, and grow irregularly. The body naturally has a host of microorganisms inside of it including bacteria and fungi that grow within the body. We need bacteria in our gut to give us nutrients and help break down food. What we don’t need are microscopic plant organisms that feed on our tissue called dermatophytes. Once fungus gets into the nail bed it can be very difficult to treat, but with proper medication it can go away on its own. Because the fungus grows slowly, it can be hard to eliminate. Anti-fungal medications are available to combat fungal infections; however, they are strong oral medications that must be taken consistently for months in order to be effective. The medications also have potential side effects to other body organs (especially the liver, skin and/or bone marrow). To monitor side effects your physician must order periodic blood tests (usually monthly) during treatment. Any of the symptoms (listed below) suggesting organ damage should be reported immediately to your physician.
Unusual fatigue
Severe loss of appetite
Yellow eyes
Dark urine
Pale stool
Skin rashes
Enlarged lymph glands
There are natural alternative treatments that work better than prescription medications and without the harmful side effects. Natural medications work with the body because they are found in nature. DMSO (Dimethyl sulfoxide) is an all natural byproduct of the wood processing industry (pine trees) and has over 50,000 medical studies to its credit. DMSO has the amazing ability of entering “through” the nail and into the nail bed, and is considered a chemical penatration enhancer in the medical community. This can be very useful getting antifungal medications into the nail where they belong. DMSO enters the body by “osmosis” and is easily absorbed in the body. The attributes of DMSO has led thousands of people to use it on a host of problems like painful sore joints to even herpes. When entering through the nail it also brings other antifungal extracts with it into the nail. Extracts like Tea tree oil (Melaleuca), Peppermint (mentha piperita), Camphor (cinnamomum), and Oregano (Origanum vulgare) all help heal nail fungus naturally because they are antifungal (antimicrobial) in nature. Plants have natural antifungal agents inside of them to protect themselves from fungi. It takes weeks if not months to eliminate nail fungus, but with proper nail care and the right medication you can do it.

How Vitamin D Affects Penis Well Being

Known as the sunshine Vitamin D is rarely found in foodstuffs and never in large quantities. Vitamin D is actually a hormone vital to the body for sustained health and wellbeing.

Forms of Vitamin D which are gained from foodstuffs, such as Vitamins D2 and D3, are converted into their active forms after receiving exposure from UV-B light from the sun. Not getting enough sunlight, consistently eating foods lacking in vitamins and minerals, and wearing (if the climate calls for it) high factor sun block all the time may lead to a Vitamin D deficiency. Scientific studies report that a deficiency in Vitamin D may be one of the causes of male sexual dysfunction and low fertility.

Vitamin D and Testosterone

According to research from the Medical University of Graz, Austria, Vitamin D increases testosterone levels in men. In a study, 160 overweight men were given Vitamin D for 12-months in order to test the effects of the nutrient on their hormonal levels. By the end of the double-blind, placebo-controlled study, the men who were given 3,332 IU of Vitamin D daily had significantly greater testosterone levels than those given placebo. Through increasing male hormone levels, men should experience increasing energy, vitality, libido and sexual performance. Supplementing the body with artificial testosterone can be both dangerous and expensive. Natural products, such as Vitamin D which increase testosterone production are by far more preferable for the majority of men out there who want to safely improve hormonal balance.

Secret Cause of Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction and impotence are complicated conditions with many possible causes; physical, hormonal and psychological. Compared to other forms of treatment, Vitamin D is one of the few vitamins to work on all of these causes. Vitamin D has a remarkable effect on the production of nitric oxide (NO); a chemical responsible for the dilation of blood vessels in the penis. Studies on animals have shown that Vitamin D-deficient animals produce half the amount of normal NO, when compared to animals with normal Vitamin D levels. Scientists from the Sunlight Institute, USA have also found that Vitamin D is effective in the treatment of erectile dysfunction associated with cardiovascular disease, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, stroke and heart attack. Vitamin D is a powerful protector for the entire cardiovascular system, including the penis, and supplementing with Vitamin D has been proven to reduce the risk of death by cardiovascular disease by 61%.

The SAD Winter Blues

It’s hard to have that get up and go feeling when you feel down. Depression in men is a common and very powerful cause for low libido and erectile dysfunction. While in many cases depression is psychogenic and is purely emotional in nature, for many men the cause is nutritional. Over the winter months it is more common for people to feel blue, and one of the reasons for this is the declining Vitamin D status in the body from reduced sun exposure. When winter blues become so serious as to require a clinical diagnosis, it is termed as Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD.

Vitamin D supplementation is often the primary treatment for men suffering from SAD. In addition, scientists from Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran found that Vitamin D combined with anti-depressants was a more effective treatment for patients with major depression than medication alone. So to bring the spring back into your step, lighten your mood, and improve the action between the sheets, Vitamin D may well be just what the doctor ordered.

Penis Health Crèmes

Penis health crèmes are therapeutic products designed to support the connective tissues, circulation and performance of the penis. It is not advisable to use most types of artificial chemicals found in creams and soaps on the penis, as the skin cells are highly sensitive. Specialist male crèmes (most professionals recommend Man1Man Oil) use nutrients, such as Vitamin D, in a shea butter base for fast absorption. This takes the nutrients directly to the tissues that require them, supporting hormone production, blood vessel health and nerve sensitivity. For men who want to improve penis health the natural and safe way, using penis health crèmes as a primary source of Vitamin D will support the entire reproductive system in a holistic fashion.
