You may think it’s beyond the average persons capability to create anything as convincing as Brad Pitt’s aged skin effects in ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button‘ or the gaping cuts and wounds so evident in ‘Zombieland‘. Not so. Liquid latex, the main constituent of any realistic skin effect, is relatively inexpensive and readily available, both on-line and at most craft stores. Be sure to read the label before buying liquid latex for skin application and avoid any brands that state ‘Not for cosmetic use’ or ‘Not suitable as body paint’.

Before You Start

Before using liquid latex on your skin you should always patch-test a small area of the skin before beginning your project. Dab a small amount on the back of your hand to check for any allergic reaction. If you experience any discomfort or a rash appears you most likely have a latex intolerance and should discontinue using it. Most people are not sensitive to latex and should be OK but a small percentage of people have reported adverse reactions so it’s always advisable to check first to be on the safe side.

Soaking the applicator in soapy water prior to use will extend it’s usage but once liquid latex dries on the applicator not even turpentine will save it from ending up in the bin.

How to Make a Fake Wound

Dab a little liquid latex on the skin, remembering to keep it away from your eyes, hair and mouth; and wait a few minutes until dry. Then gently peel a little of the dried latex away from the skin. This will give the appearance of torn or blistered skin depending on how you manipulate it. The more coats you apply the deeper the appearance of the wound. Drying time for each coat is usually around five minutes or so and can be sped up using gentle heat from a hair-dryer. Each coat should be allowed to dry thoroughly before applying the next or the wound will take much longer to dry. Liquid latex is available in a wide range of colors but is mostly sold as ‘clear’ or ‘transparent’ therefore only minimal decoration is usually required to match the end result to individual skin tone. Red food coloring can also be added to give the wound a fresh or infected look.

Place a small piece of tissue paper on a non-porous surface, such as greaseproof or tracing paper, and coat it evenly with liquid latex. After a minute or so place the tissue paper on the desired area of your skin. Using your chosen applicator, cover the tissue paper with more liquid latex and it will begin to adhere to the skin. As the latex dries it will begin to shrink, causing the skin to contract and form a wrinkled effect. When thoroughly dry, talc & make-up can be used to decorate the area until the desired effect is achieved.

How to Make a Fake Scar

To form the base of your scar take a 1/4″ strip of cotton wool and twist it into a long straw shape. Apply some latex to the skin where you want the scar to appear and place the cotton wool on top. Let it sit for a few minutes until it sticks to the skin. With your foam brush or applicator apply two or three even coats of liquid latex over the cotton wool (remembering to allow the latex to dry in between coats) until the desired result is achieved. You will notice the end result has a rubbery, skin-like texture and seems realistic to the touch. Make-up, foundation & eye-shadow pigment can then be applied to blend the scar to your individual skin-tone.

Liquid latex is easily removed from the skin by peeling away. As already explained, if liquid latex has been applied over hair it is likely to pull the hair off the skin which can cause some discomfort.

If you read my article ‘How Hemorrhoids Made Me Healthy, Fit & Sexy’ you know how I treated my condition. Now, discover how a severe flare-up of hemorrhoids increased my faith in God. It sounds unbelievable, doesn’t it? Here’s what happened.

In early 2009, I was shocked to see how the recession was eating into my RRSP savings. People I knew were facing the prospect of deferred retirement because of their losses. What could I do? I had two choices: keep losing money and worry, or (deep breath) take the plunge into home ownership.

I had dreamed of owning a home for years, but life in Toronto is expensive and I didn’t think I could afford it. Despite an uncertain corporate job with an income that would barely stretch to meet my financial needs, buying my first home felt like the right thing to do. In fact, it was my ‘unnatural’ peace about taking this huge step that convinced me it was part of God’s plan for me.

I do not like to rush important decisions. I emailed a realtor friend and laid out my finances, my wish list and my will-settle-for list. I doubted he would find anything for me but I was determined not to buy more than I could afford. We sat down together in early March, just to talk. My friend brought two sample listings to show me. Two months later, one of them was my first home. I had been praying, “Lord, I don’t want to turn (big round number) and still be renting.” My closing date was 7 days before my birthday!

With $25,000 borrowed from my RRSP for the down payment and renovations, I began purging 20+ years of accumulated possessions, and shopping for flooring and a kitchen for my new condo. With the help of my realtor, family and friends, everything moved quickly but smoothly.

The next ‘miracle’ was that nearly all the renovation work was done in one month. Old floors and kitchen ripped out. New bamboo floors and a custom-designed IKEA kitchen installed. Tile was laid in the bathroom and kitchen. I even had the whole place professionally painted. It was wonderful! It was expensive. Was I getting in over my head?

Before I could worry, I had a more pressing problem. My kitchen countertops were on back order. And the plumber insisted on installing the kitchen and bathroom sinks as one job. This meant I had no water, except in the bathtub, for three weeks!

By July, I had both sinks, the renos were done and I could actually enjoy living in my new home. My south-facing unit is bright and has a lovely view of the river. Located in a park-like setting amid lawns, trees and gardens, my home occupies a peaceful corner of the city.

Summer was super busy. I was working full-time and unpacking boxes and organizing stuff at home. I was too tired to cook nutritious meals or get much exercise – though every so often, the thought would come: you should go for a walk, or, try the gym downstairs, or, eat more salad and fruit, not just chips, cookies and beer.

All the excitement and stress – buying a home, renovating, moving – plus my recent poor lifestyle choices – took their toll. In October, I had a severe flare-up of hemorrhoids (a condition I have had since my 20s). Usually, after a few days of eating lots of fiber and exercising more, the veins would shrink, the bleeding would stop and the pain would end. Only this time, nothing helped. Days turned into weeks and I was still suffering.

Finally I went to see my doctor and got prescription ointment and suppositories. I was careful with my diet and started working out and walking. After 10 days, the bleeding stopped and the pain subsided. What a relief! But within days, it started again and got worse. I used three courses of medication and the doctor said the next step was surgery. Ouch! Just the thought of it was terrifying. There had to be another way to treat this condition!

I began to pray, “Lord, have mercy on me. Help me. Heal me.” I found Bible verses about healing, wrote them out and read them daily. One favourite was in Matthew 8, verses 1 to 3, about a man with leprosy, who approached Jesus, knelt down and said, “Lord, if you want to, you can make me well again.” And Jesus touched him, said “I want to. Be healed.” And he was. Later in the same chapter, a Roman officer asked Jesus to heal his sick servant. Jesus said he’d come to the man’s house, but the Roman said, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my house. Just say the word from where you are and my servant will be healed.” Jesus was amazed by the Gentile’s faith and praised him for it. He healed the servant. Other scriptures that helped me were Psalm 6, verses 2-3; Exodus 15 verse 26 and Exodus 24 verse 25. I started declaring “Thank you Lord for healing my hemorrhoids” before it happened, believing that he would.

But I didn’t just sit around waiting for it to happen. I continued with my Internet research. Instead of desperately buying an expensive ‘miracle cure’, I was determined to try everything that was reasonable and affordable. Some of the things that helped me included:

– Sitz baths – filling a large tub with very warm water, adding some Epsom salts, and literally soaking my backside for 20 minutes twice a day

– White oak bark – one website suggested steeping this mixture into the sitz bath water

– Herbal supplements – of several I tried, Butcher’s Broom was the most helpful

– Fiber – three times a day I took psyllium fiber. Inulin fiber was almost as good and much easier to take

– Diet – I changed what I ate and how I ate (see my article ‘How Hemorrhoids Made Me Healthy, Fit and Sexy’ for details)

– Exercise – I started working out 3-4 times a week in my condo gym and walking every day at lunchtime

When I went for my annual checkup in early December, I had lost 8 pounds and toned up nicely. I felt better and I looked good. Most days, I had very little pain and the bleeding had almost disappeared. I began to believe, and to declare, that I would be 100% healed by the New Year.

Looking back, I realized that the fleeting thoughts I had over the summer – that I should eat better and exercise more – were God’s way of trying to get my attention. He wasn’t being a spoil sport, he had my best interests at heart. He knew my chronic condition would flare up and he wanted to help me avoid it. But I didn’t listen. When it got to the point where I was in severe pain and ready to do whatever was necessary to stop it, God helped me to find the information I needed. And to commit to making the changes – in my diet and exercise habits – that would heal the hemorrhoids and get me fit. I learned that if I don’t respond to God’s gentle ‘nudges’, he applies increasing pressure. Tough love. I wished I had listened sooner! But, because things got as serious as they did, the changes I was forced to make turned into a permanent new lifestyle.

I have a confession to make, though. I am not perfect. Two or three times, on weekends, I overindulged (chips, ice cream, pastries, alcohol) and my hemorrhoids flared up again. Constipation caused strained bowel movements and the pain of an aching colon reminded me that this condition doesn’t disappear – it becomes dormant. Under the right conditions (eating foods that cause constipation and not exercising enough to keep the digestive system functioning) the bleeding and pain can return.

These relapses made me grateful that God did not heal my hemorrhoids outright. I believe he could have. But he knows that I can be lazy and self-indulgent; that there are times I may not be as careful as I should be. At family gatherings, where we enjoy big meals with a variety of foods, accompanied by wine or beer, followed by rich desserts and coffee. Or after work, when I’m tired and don’t feel like exercising. It’s easy to slip back into bad habits, so I am grateful for these reminders that nudged me back on track.

Now, because I learned the hard way, I am convinced of the need to eat balanced meals, with lots of fruit and vegetables, and very little dairy, meat and saturated fats. I know I have to stay active – walk every day, take the stairs, work out. Becoming stronger and healthier feels great. Staying balanced promotes physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. And that means that I can enjoy living a ‘purpose driven life’. (Note: this phrase is derived from the book “The Purpose Driven Life” written by Rick Warren.)

Early Pregnancy Symptoms Discharge, Heartburn, Nausea and More

There are many common early pregnancy symptoms. Discharge from the vagina is almost universal in the early weeks of a pregnancy. This increase in the discharge is due to the increase in the growth of the cells lining the vagina. The walls naturally start to thicken as soon as the egg is fertilized and this thickening can cause you to have a discharge of a white, milky fluid. The medical term for this fluid is leucorrhea and is harmless so it doesn’t need any treatment. This discharge may actually continue throughout the pregnancy.

If you notice that the discharge has a foul odour, then this could be the symptom of a bacteria or yeast infection. Other symptoms of this that will require you to have medical treatment in the form of creams and vaginal suppositories include itching and burning sensations. Douching will not have any effect on the normal discharge you experience during pregnancy.

Other early symptoms of pregnancy that you can watch for in addition to missing your normal menstrual period include:

Morning Sickness. This is common in the first trimester of pregnancy and the name comes from the fact that most women have nauseous feelings early in the morning. Nausea and queasiness can occur though at any time of the day or night. You may also develop an aversion to foods you once loved to eat or to the smell of certain foods being cooked. These food aversions and the nausea are not harmful and are a normal part of carrying a baby in the womb. The sick feelings tend to abate at about the 13th or 14th week, although some women continue to feel sick all through the pregnancy. Some helpful hints include having dry crackers ready to settle your stomach and eating small meals more often so that you don’t feel hungry.

Constipation. This complaint affects a large proportion of pregnant women. It is largely due to an increase in the body production of progesterone which decreases the colon ability to absorb water from the food you eat. Drinking more milk than you usually do can also cause bouts of constipation. This problem tends to worsen just after the first trimester. You can help ease the problem by making sure you drink plenty of water, getting plenty of exercise and including foods high in fibre in your diet.

Dizziness or Fainting. Many pregnant women first find out they are pregnant after they faint and then go to the doctor to try to determine the cause. It is also more noticeable in the second trimester when you get up or move suddenly. During pregnancy the blood vessels dilate at a dramatic rate and the amount of blood may be too much for the vessels. This is what causes the dizzy or fainting spells.

Fatique. Feeling more tired than usual is a very common early sign that you may be pregnant. The blood is carrying more oxygen to the fetus in the womb, which causes your heart to beat faster and in turn causes you to feel fatigued. Take naps during the day or if this is not possible start going to bed earlier at night. Eating foods that are rich in protein and iron can also help to reduce the feelings of tiredness.

Toenail Fungus – Toenail Fungus Prevention

To help you prevent toe nail fungus and keep down repeated infections, practice healthy hand and foot hygiene by sticking to these steps for toenail fungus prevention:

Keep your toenails short, dry and clean.

Trim your nails even across and file down the thick areas.

Thoroughly dry your hands and feet, including between your toes, after taken a bath.

Wear suitable socks. Synthetic socks that removes wetness may keep your feet dryer than cotton or wool socks, you are also able to wear synthetic socks underneath additional socks. Change your socks frequently, particularly if your feet sweat a lot.

Take your shoes off from time to time during the day and after physical exercise. Switch closed-toe shoes with open-toed shoes.

Apply an anti fungal spray or powder. Spray or sprinkle your feet and the insides of your shoes.

Wear rubber gloves. This protects your hands from overexposure to water. Between uses, turn the rubber gloves inside out to dry.

Do not trim or pick at the skin around your toenails. This may provide the germs access to your skin and toenails.

Do not go barefoot in public places. Wear shoes around public pools, showers and locker rooms.

Pick out a good manicure and pedicure beauty shop. Be sure the beauty shop sterilizes its tools. Better yet, bring your own. Better safe than sorry. Give up toenail polish and fake toenails. While it may be enticing to cover up toenail fungus infections with a coat of beautiful pink polish, this can trap unwanted moisture and aggravate the infection. Wash your hands after contacting an infected toenail.

The most wonderful time of the year is not so wonderful when you and your family are struggling with hardship. A cancer diagnosis or cancer treatment during the holidays can make it especially difficult to find joy in celebration, but that does not mean it is impossible. There are steps you can take to, not forget about your cancer, but work with it so that you can find ways to enjoy the season, even if you may not be able to participate in the same events you used to, at least in the same way.

Coping With Cancer During The Holidays

Everyone deserves to have a joyful holiday season, especially when it has been difficult to find things to be joyful about. These tips can help you and your family keep the holiday spirit alive while still preserving your physical and emotional wellbeing.

  • Shopping can be tiresome and frustrating. Do as much online shopping as possible and get creative. A shirt may not mean as much as a memory from childhood.
    It’s perfectly fine to say “No” and you should. People will understand if you can’t do certain activities.
  • Do things you enjoy, such as reading, playing board games with family, or even taking a nap, to lift your spirits when you’re not feeling at your best.
  • Enlist support for organizing holiday gatherings, meal preparation, and cleanup. Don’t try to do everything yourself.
  • Express your feelings and embrace the support of the important people in your life. Give yourself permission to feel and express your feelings. Let yourself laugh or cry.
  • Don’t overindulge in alcohol. Because alcohol is a depressant, it can “bring out” or heighten bad feelings.
  • Maintain healthy habits: Eat balanced meals, drink in moderation, get plenty of sleep, and try to make time for some physical activity, which is a good way to relieve stress.
  • It’s all about preparation. Plan how you want to spend your time, with whom, and for how long. Create a list of the usual traditions and events and decide if you want to continue certain traditions or create new ones.
  • Trying to celebrate alone can be very difficult. Make plans to get together with friends, family or co-workers over the holidays to balance the time you’ll spend alone.

It may seem like there isn’t much to celebrate, but there is always something to be grateful for and that is worth celebrating. You and your loved ones have developed new strengths with the day-to-day challenges of cancer. You have discovered a greater capacity for courage and love and that is worth embracing and building on during the holidays.

What Are Functional Skills And Why Does My Child With A Disability Need Them?

Are you concerned that your child with a disability is not learning

academics at a grade and age level pace? Have you thought that your

child may benefit from a curriculum of functional skills? Would you

like to learn about a resource that can help you learn more about

functional curriculums for your child in special education? This

article will discuss functional skills, functional academics, why your

child with a disability needs them, and a resource for more

information.

Functional skills are defined as skills that can be used everyday, in

different environments. Functional skills focus on different areas

such as home (cooking, cleaning etc) family, self help skills

(bathing, brushing teeth, dressing, grooming), employment, recreation,

community involvement, health, and functional academics. All students

with disabilities will benefit from functional skill training, to help

them in their adult life.

Functional academics are also important for children with

disabilities, who may not be able to learn age and grade appropriate

academics. Functional academics are defined as academic areas that

will be used by the student for the rest of their life. For example:

Reading (read signs; stop, go, mens, womens, read a recipe). Math

(money, grocery shopping, making change, budget). Health (grooming,

oral hygiene, plan healthy meals). A wonderful resource to learn more

about functional skills, and functional curriculums to help children

with special needs is the book entitled Functional Curriculum for

Elementary, Middle, and Secondary Age Students with Special Needs.

The book is Edited by Paul Wehman and John Kregal, and is a resource

that you will use again and again.

Your child with a disability needs functional skills because these

skills will have meaning for your child, and will help them be as

independent as possible, as an adult. For example: Every child eats,

and being able to cook or prepare simple foods will help them be more

independent. If children learn simple household chores, these skills

can be turned into job skills when they get older. For example: My

daughter Angelina, who has a severe disability, learned how to fold

towels when she was in elementary school. When Angelina entered high

school she had a job folding towels at the high school pool. Because

Angelina already had the functional skill of folding towels, the

transition to a job folding towels was pretty easy. Angelina also

learned that when she worked hard folding towels, she was paid. On pay

day, she was able to spend the money that she made at her job.

Learning functional skills that can be turned into work is critical

for all children with disabilities. They will gain pride by being able

to work, and will understand the connection between work and money.

By learning what functional skills are and why they are important,

will help your child as they grow into adulthood. Do not be afraid to

bring up functional skill training for your child, when you are

participating in IEP meetings. Your child is depending on you to help

them be a happy fulfilled adult!

In carpal tunnel syndrome this nerve is compressed and it seems more common in women , especially if hormonal levels fluctuate and they carry more fluid in their periphery, as may happen with pregnancy. It may linked to repetitive strain injuries.

4. Arthritis. This is a problem that can cause severe wrist pain and difficulty performing normal activities. There are many ideas and possible causes of arthritis, and fortunately there are a number of treatments for wrist arthritis. Generally imaging, blood tests and a rheumatologist needs to confirm the exact type of arthritis present.

5. Ganglion cyst. This is a benign swelling that usually occurs over the back of the hand or wrist. These are benign, fluid-filled capsules. Ganglion cysts are not cancerous, will not spread, and while they may grow in size, they will not spread to other parts of your body.

6. Fracture. This is a common orthopedic injury. Patients who sustain a broken wrist may be treated in a cast, or they may need surgery for the fracture. The outcome varies with the type of fracture, displaced or undisplaced and how much rehabilitation it requires.

Treatment of some of these conditions could include ice and heat application, a wrist support, anti-inflammatory medication and cortisone injections.

7. Nerve interference can contribute to wrist pain and can often be alleviated by chiropractic treatment.When do you need to call your doctor about your wrist pain? If you are unsure of the cause of your wrist pain, or if you do not know the specific treatment recommendations for your condition, you should seek medical attention. Treatment of these conditions must be directed at the specific cause of your problem. Some signs that you should be seen by a doctor include:

Use a three point seat belt and make sure the diagonal strap is in-between your breasts, resting on your shoulder, breastbone and over your tummy. Place the lap part of the belt across your thighs under your tummy.

Wireless Hidden Cameras — "it Wasn’t Me", Said the Nanny

Mom came home from work, tired and looking forward to a relaxing evening.

As soon as she got through the door her two sons ran to meet her.  But something was wrong – Billy, the toddler, had a large bruise on his upper arm which wasn’t there when she left this morning.

A few weeks ago Mom had hired a nanny to watch her kids during the day.  The nanny came with good references and seemed to get along with the kids – Billy, 18 months, and Jimmy who just turned three.

They were normal boys who also had a hard day of playing, napping, eating and sometimes getting into mischief.

Mom asked the nanny where Billy got that dark bruise.  The nanny said that Jimmy, his older brother, smacked him in the arm with a Wiffle Ball bat.

Mom questioned Jimmy and he said that he didn’t do anything to his younger brother.  “I like playing with Jimmy – he’s my friend”.

But this wasn’t the first time this happened.  Mom had noticed other bruises on Billy over the past few weeks.  According to the nanny, they were all caused by his older brother who constantly denied it and said that the nanny hurt Billy.

Mom then asked the nanny to take a look at her home computer, which showed the entire incident.

The nanny knew she was caught and Mom fired her on the spot and filed a complaint with the employment agency.
