H Pylori Symptoms

Helicobacter pylori, commonly referred to as H. pylori, is a spiral bacteria that usually resides beneath the mucus layer next to the gastric cells. H. pylori infection is commonly associated with the occurrence of peptic ulcers and gastritis.

Following are some commonly observed H. pylori symptoms:

Many studies have indicated that anaemia, caused by an iron deficiency, is closely associated with H. pylori. When the H. pylori infection occurs in the presence of reduced stomach acid, it becomes difficult for the patient to digest food, especially protein. And if the food isn’t properly digested, it affects the absorption of minerals in the body. This, in turn, results in iron deficiency.

Abdominal pain:

H. pylori can cause inflammation in the stomach and small intestine. It slows down the digestive process and causes a build up of gases in the intestine. The sluggish digestive system can cause abdominal pain and constipation. H. pylori also facilitates yeast overgrowth (Candida) and causes other digestive infections, such as Giardia lamblia and Blastocystis hominis. All these secondary infections can cause diarrhea, bloating and flatulence.

If H. pylori remains in the stomach for a long period, it can damage the parietal cells. This can result in the production of an excess amount of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Hydrochloric acid in turn can burn the delicate stomach lining and can cause severe heartburn.

Chest pain:

Nerves from the 4th to 8th thoracic vertebrae can innervate the stomach. These vertebrae correspond to the stomach areas, shoulder blade and chest. If the stomach gets inflamed due to an H. pylori infection, the pain signals can come out from the stomach, and cause pain in other areas too.

Vomiting and Nausea:

These two are the most common symptoms of H. pylori. The body tries to get rid of the H. pylori infection by ejecting it out through vomiting.

In extreme cases, H. pylori symptoms can include migraines, sinus problems, sleep disorders, weight gain, fatigue, anxiety and urticaria.

It’s advised that you visit your doctor after experiencing any of these H. pylori symptoms.

These are Some of the Symptoms of Eyelid Eczema

Eczema eyelid is a problem that generally arrives with scaling, erythema, and edema associated with burning and pruritus. The irritants and the allergens in the atmosphere are the main causes that account for the eczema eyelids. The skin near and around the eyes is very thin and sensitive and is easily vulnerable to irritants as well as allergens. Hypersensitivity to the environmental allergens like the dust, mold and pollen or seborrheic dermatitis may also cause the eczema eyelids.

Eczema is an underrated disorder that is frequently overlooked. It has devastating effects and the treatment of this condition is really hard. When the eczema begins to spread towards the eyelids, it is a condition that cannot be tolerated by many people. Eczema eyelid is associated with the itching and the pain.

Symptoms of eyelid eczema

* The common symptoms are itchy, inflamed and scaly skin
* In adults the skin may become too dry; whereas in children it becomes too weepy.
* Mild eczema is associated with a small irritation; whereas severe eczema becomes unbearable leading to disruption at work or at home, low self esteem, depression and disturbances in sleep.

Prevention of the eyelid eczema- the best way of preventing the eczema is to prevent it before it occurs. Some allergens are present in the air itself that are difficult to avoid. If you have allergens in and around your house, you can use air filters, allergen-tight bedding, or anti-allergen cleaning products for decreasing their presence.

Treatment of eczema eyelid:

The typical treatment for eczema eyelids comprised of a series of corticosteroids, but their use had some side effects causing the thinning of the skin or enlargement of the blood vessels. But, the new advanced treatments do not possess any such risks. This new treatment is called topical immunomodulators. They are very safe to treat the sensitive areas of the eyes.

The patient suffering from eczema eyelid should generally avoid all the possible irritants and the allergens. He should stop using the cosmetic sand the skin products that cause irritation to the eyes. He should avoid scratching and rubbing of the eyes. Sometimes the doctor for temporary relief may prefer a moisturizer.

One important thing to remember is that your eczema becomes worst with stress. So, give time for yourself and involve in those activities that you like and will promote relaxation. You can go for meditation, yoga, creative pastime or any other hobby to reduce your stress.

How Is The Procedure For An Angioplasty?

For those in whom clot-busters and stents have not worked, there is the Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG), or ‘cabbage’ – although doing a cabbage in an acute situation is pretty much the last resort of last resorts. Or TOTS, which stands for Tatties Over The Side (a tatty is a potato), a reference to the point in a storm when the crew has to ditch the very last bit of cargo to save the ship.

Ergo, a CABG in an acute MI, when clot-busters or angioplasty has not worked, is TOTS time. You see, the jargon is quite simple once you get the hang of it. Quite how much impact all of this cleverness has had on overall mortality rates from having a heart attack is a moot point. Around fifty per cent of people die before reaching hospital, so they can not be saved.

Another forty per cent, or so, were always going to survive no matter how badly the hospital cocked up. So, at very best, these techniques can improve survival after a heart attack by about ten per cent, and we are nowhere near achieving this yet. Perhaps two or three per cent more people survive a heart attack now than about ten or twenty years ago. Do not get me wrong.

If I had a heart attack I would want a cardiologist warming up the cath lab, ready to stick a stent right up the old femoral artery. No question about it. Nothing but the best for me, thank you very much. But when it comes to heart attacks, cure is always going to be very much less impressive than prevention.

Even if it is much less sexy. Before we move on, I need to provide a little more information about ‘infarctions’ elsewhere in the body. Because although plaques most often develop in the arteries supplying blood to the heart (coronary arteries), plaques are perfectly capable of developing elsewhere in the body too. Quite often, big plaques form in the arteries in the neck (carotid arteries).

As these arteries supply blood to the brain, this is clearly a danger spot. However, the carotid arteries very rarely block completely. What most often happens is that a clot forms over the carotid plaque, then a bit breaks off and travels up into the brain through ever-smaller arteries. Once the clot reaches an artery that is too narrow for it it gets stuck. and this dams up blood supply to an area of the brain, leading to a cerebral (brain) infarction.

This is the commonest version of a stroke: The other type of stroke occurs when an artery in the brain bursts, causing a bleed into the brain tissue. This is called a cerebral haemorrhage.

A Five Step Approach To Beating Heart Disease

Having a long and somewhat checkered family history of heart attack and stroke I have had the chance to observe this disease up close and personal. While my relatives have not always successful at beating heart disease, what I can tell you is that by continuing to go down the road that got you into this situation in the first place you will be effectively signing your own death warrant.

One of the best examples of this was my grandfather who loved his hot dogs, full fat coffee creamer, hamburgers, cheese, butter, chili, fries, eggs, hash browns, sausage, bacon, gravy, and all things fried. He also loved his cigarettes, and grew up during a time when smoking was considered not only cool, but a harmless pastime. Nevertheless, he refused to change his way of living and after five heart attacks and two open heart surgery operations he was gone.

Now his story is extreme, but the point is that beating heart disease is about making lifestyle changes before they put you in the group of the 631,635 other people who will die of heart disease this year.

The thing about the heart that makes beating heart disease so difficult is that the heart muscle weakens with age. For example a 20 year olds heart has about 4 times resting capacity. This number is cut in half by the age of 80. So as you can see not only do we have to make changes that facilitate heart health but may need to exceed the established guidelines.

Beating heart disease – A five step approach

*Avoid cigarette smoke: If you smoke, or are subjecting yourself to a barrage of cigarette smoke, you are putting yourself at risk. Smoking causes already clogged arteries to constrict, basically squeezing off blood flow to the heart. It also increased bad cholesterol levels. Smokers are 4 times more likely to die for a heart attack, and it is easy to see why.

*Inactivity kills: The biggest risk factor of heart disease is inactivity. According to the CDC 39.5 percent of those with heart disease are inactive. The American Heart Association suggests 30 minutes of exercise daily. The  benefit to your heart and arteries seem to expand with the amount of time and intensity spent exercising. You should check with your doctor to find the exercise routine that best suits your needs.

*Say no to fat and fatty foods: Certain types of fat clog arteries and greatly increase ones chances of heart attack or stroke. The worst of these is saturated fat. Saturated fat is found in abundance in full fat dairy products, fatty red meat, organ meats, coconut oil, and palm oil. Fried foods also tend to be high in saturated fat. If you are intent on beating heart disease total saturated fat intake must be limited to less than 7 percent or less of total calories!

*Weight matters: The more overweight a person is the greater risk of heart disease. Excess weight increases the hearts workload and tends to raise artery clogging LDL cholesterol levels, while reducing the number of heart healthy HDL cholesterol molecules in body.

*Consider a natural supplement for cholesterol: A natural cholesterol supplement will work with your body to get rid of dangerous LDL cholesterol. When combined with the steps above these types of supplements  have been shown to be a valuable tool for beating heart disease, and just may give you that little extra edge needed against this dangerous foe.

Extenze Side Effects: Is It Safe For Everyone?

What is Extenze? Would you want to try it? Should you be scared of Extenze side effects? Have you heard comments from friends who have used Extenze?

Extenze is a male enhancement pill and some may have not heard about it yet. It is designed for men to increase their chances of fulfilling sexual satisfaction. Some used it for erectile dysfunctions, decreased libido or to make their penis bigger. Claims of gaining inches on their penis’ size and girth are posted on Extenze websites. If you consider these comments in choosing the right pill for you, you might want to visit their website.

Some enhancement pills were reported to cause nausea, palpitations, difficulty of breathing and upset stomach. Others on the other hand were formulated in a way that decreases the concentration of the harmful substances to eliminate risks for side effects. Sometimes it affects the potency of the pill and creates no results at all and is categorized as placebo. Some are so potent but are not advised for specific individuals since they bring about harmful side effects. People who are considered unhealthy or those who have diseases are not advised to use some of the enhancement pills.

The pills are processed by the liver in order to distribute it to the body and the kidney works to excrete the by-products. People who have kidney and liver diseases will not be able to normally synthesize the pill and eliminate the unnecessary components. It could lead to toxicity or even death. Heart problems are also considered. Some pills affect the blood flow not only to the penis but to the whole body and the heart might not be able to cope with this kind of change.

According to its manufacturer and distributors, Extenze has low concentration of its ingredients. It is for consumers to be able to tolerate the pills. Some who have used it for weeks or months attest that they have not experienced a single side effect but experienced its awesome benefits.

Could it really be zero risk for this product? Are Extenze side effects truly non-existent? There are ways for us to find the answer and learn more. Thorough research and reading will definitely lead us to finding the truth about Extenze. Men who want to try the product have the option of consulting a physician or an expert for this matter to get an in-depth understanding for the product.

3 Kitchen Blender Problems You Can Fix Yourself

Over time, even the best kitchen blenders will start to show damage. This is especially true if you use your blender every day to make thick smoothies. Today, in our throw-away society we’re quick to just trash a product at the first sign of a malfunction. Small appliances like blenders are usually not worth taking to a repair shop to have them fixed. But before you resign your blender to the landfill and buy a new one, there are several quick and easy repairs you can do yourself. Taking the time to do these checks to see if you can get your blender working again is certainly worth it.

One of the most common problems you’ll find with your kitchen blender is leaking. Even top rated blenders from blender reviews will start to have this problem eventually. The cause lies in the o-ring or gasket located in the bottom of the blender jar where the blade assembly and housing reside. Over time the rubber gasket starts to wear down. If your blender leaking comes from the glass jar and not the bottom, then there is likely a crack in the jar and you’ll have to replace it. Bottom leaking though is likely the gasket. To inspect it, you’ll need to unscrew the blade housing from the blender jar and pull out the rubber o-ring. Then you can just look for leaks and tears in the rubber of this ring. This part is easily replaceable and only costs a few dollars. You can find it online or at most home discount or appliance stores.

Faulty Blades

Another common problem with blenders will occur with the blades. In this case the engine will start to run, but the blades will turn too slowly. If this happens then the likely cause is something clogging the blade assembly area. You’ll need to take the assembly apart and clean everything thoroughly with a scrub brush. There is probably a build-up of food slowing the blades. Soaking everything for a few hours in detergent will also help to dissolve any food particles or gunk that has built up over time. Be sure to check your owner’s manual to make sure that this is OK to do for your particular blender brand. You may also want to add some white grease or WD-40 to the lower part of the blade assembly (not in any areas where you’ll be putting food of course). If all of this fails to work, then you’ll probably have to replace the whole assembly, which can also be purchased online or at most home appliance retailers.

Busted Buttons

One other issue you may have with your kitchen blender lies with the buttons or the control panel. Often buttons will get stuck. This is probably caused by food and drink getting down into the button area and causing them to jam up. Even if you are careful and clean the buttons and control panel thoroughly, over time, food particle will still accumulate. Many blender models will let you take off the control panel cover so that you can clean up behind this. You can use a toothbrush here to help you get down into all the crevices. Some blender models will also let you remove the screws on the bottom of the unit and pull out the lower housing area so that you can get to the buttons easier. Be sure to consult your owner’s manual if you need to do this. Often all your blender needs is a good cleaning to get the buttons working again.

This information should help solve most common minor blender problems. Keep in mind that often a simple repair or replacement will save you the expense of having to get a new blender. It’s also much better for the environment to repair something rather than to just throw it away.

Pancreas and Bile

Pancreas and bile in the human body can be figuratively in good or in very bad relationship. They can be the friends in healthy situation, but can be worst enemy causing diseases of each other.

They have much similarity: without both pancreatic juice and bile we cannot digest the food, especially fat.

Bile and pancreatic juice both have a big amount of minerals and bicarbonates and in normal condition are alkaline.

Both bile and pancreatic juice go to the duodenum (beginning of small intestine) using special pathways: bile and pancreatic ducts. They merge each other before entering the duodenum and mix of pancreatic juice and bile enter in the duodenum throughout special valve called sphincter Oddi.

Negative changing of the biochemistry of bile or pancreatic juice, structure of ducts, possible back ups of these fluids can lead to diseases, some of them fatal.

There are simple examples. Pancreatic cancer causes severe damage of liver because the tumor squeezes the bile duct, developing back up of bile.

From another hand, if the bile is entered to the pancreatic duct, it causes activation of pancreatic enzymes inside the pancreas and severe damages of pancreatic cells (pancreatitis).

As it turned out, bile is the main point of pancreatic health. Practically, bile can cause lots of problems for pancreas, because bile can be easy getting toxic, acidic, very aggressive and can corrode tissue and cells. In this case, bile changes its biochemistry composition and normal pathway. Doctors called this condition – bile reflux. Aggressive bile can make inflammation and ulcers.

When the bile throws back to the stomach, it causes ulcers and gastritis (inflammation of the stomach). Some scientists consider that aggressive bile can even throw highly up causing the damage of the esophagus.

As was talked before, when the aggressive bile throws back to the pancreatic duct, it causes blockage of the duct, that drains digestive enzymes from the pancreas, leading to inflammation of pancreas – pancreatitis. The pancreatic juice contains the digestive enzymes which are inactive. Just a little bile can activate them and digestive enzymes start to digest their own pancreas inside the pancreatic duct – self-digestion.

Toxic, acidic, solid bile with gallbladder stones may obstruct the bile ducts and spasms of valve between the bile, pancreatic ducts and small intestine (duodenum). These stones can be very small like sand or large and can make blockage of moving of bile, increasing the pressure into pancreatic duct and back up the pancreatic juices, which collect digestive enzymes.   The pancreatic digestive enzymes, which trapped inside, start to digest their own pancreatic cells causing congestion, inflammation, pain, cysts and finally death of tissue of pancreas gland.

The main reason to make bile aggressive is deficiency of minerals, microelements and bicarbonates, which cause the acidosis and changing of biochemistry of bile. Whole body acidity is caused by acid formed food, bad food combination, big fatty meals, processed products without good quality and quantity of minerals, microelements and bicarbonates, and dehydration are main factors to make the bile toxic, acidic, solid and very aggressive as well.

From another hand, our organism is bombarded every day by myriads of harmful chemicals from food, water, air and toxins from inside or outside of our body. Liver removes the toxins from our body by moving the fat-soluble wastes into the bile and then to the small and large intestines out from body. More toxins are in our body – more toxins go to the bile.

The worst enemy for the liver and bile is alcohol. Thus, it is not wonder, alcohol abuse is number one factor leading to pancreatitis. Unfortunately, there are many parasites, especially one cell organisms, which also create toxicity and inflammation of bile ducts. According to scientific evidence, Candida-yeast overgrow can be a big reason for bile to be acidic, toxic and aggressive.

Even the small problems with bile and/or pancreas are a huge signal to change the life style and focus on liver and bile health. Some of the healing modalities may be very helpful such as:

  • Healing Diet.
  • Herbal Medicine.
  • Nutritional Supplementation.
  • Acupuncture.
  • Drinking Healing Mineral Water made from the Genuine Karlovy Vary Thermal Spring Salt.
  • Therapeutic Exercises and Point Massage.
  • Restoration of friendly intestinal flora, etc.

The positive changing in the biochemistry of bile, enhance the production and promote the elimination of bile are very beneficial for people even with small gastro intestinal problems. Doing this is a slowly process which require supervision of knowledgeable health professionals.

Mercer Infection – Signs, Symptoms, and Treatments

Mercer infection is the one of the colloquial terms given for MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) infection. Initially, Staphylococcal resistance to antibiotics (especially to Penicillin) was unheard of. However, bacterias can mutate and develop good resistance against antibacterial medications including Penicillin, such as Methicillin, as well as against other Beta-lactam antibiotics such as Meropenem, Clavulanic acid and Tazobactam. Furthermore, resistance to Cephalosporins (such as Cefazolin, Cefuroxime, Ceftriaxone) were also studied and documented.

Surprisingly, the causative agent that causes MRSA, the Staphylococcus Aureus, has natural colonies in the human body. These natural bacterial floras are mostly located inside the nostrils. The skin is also a natural haven for this microbe. They normally stay dormant and do not cause any health problems. When immunity weakens and there is a break in the protective integrity of the skin, Staphylococcus Aureus now becomes pathogenic.

Staph infection is usually treated with Penicillin-class antibiotics. Often, Penicillin alone is quite effective. However, some strains of Staphylococcus had developed effective resistance, and mercer infection sets in.

Signs and Symptoms

In its early stage, signs and symptoms are generally fever and skin rashes. A raised, red skin lesion that looks like a pimple, a pustule or a group of red bumps, is also present. The common topical infection sites are wounds, cuts and abrasions, as well as the neck, inner thighs, back, the interior portion of the arms, and hairy portions of the body such as the beard, armpits and groin. Infection may spread to the sebaceous or apocrine glands located in the edges of the eyelid, creating a red, painful, swollen and irritating lump called a Sty or Hordeolum. As the infection worsens, skin lesions may feel warm due to inflammation, and can become more painful, swollen and larger, which can eventually rupture, creating a profound and purulent abscess.

If left untreated or if the causative agent has a strong resistance and virulence, it can cause havoc to other body tissues. Immediate medical intervention must be initiated when serious and life-threatening complications occur, such as Endocarditis (heart valve infection), Osteomyelilits (bone infection), Septicemia, or also known as Bacteremia, Toxic Shock Syndrome, severe cellulitis, and flesh-destructive complications like Pyomyositis, Necrotizing fasciitisand Necrotizing pneumonia.

Risk Factors

Mercer infection can either be community-acquired or CA-MRSA or healthcare/hospital-associated or HA-MRSA. Risk factors include a weak immune system especially on patients with HIV/AIDS and those undergoing long-term chemotherapy and steroidal therapy, pediatric and geriatric patients, prolonged and multiple hospitalization confinement, long-term antibiotic therapy, as this can hasten bacterial resistance, invasive procedures such as surgery, urinary catheters and dialysis, frequent skin contact like mutual sharing or poor disinfection of personal stuffs like towel and clothes, overcrowding, skin trauma such as wounds and cuts, as well as poor personal hygiene and sanitation.

Mercer Infection Treatments

Both categories of MRSA infection are treated by antibiotics. The class of antibacterial medication to be used is dependent on the severity.

For mild to moderate infections, a sulfanomide combination of Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim (Bactrim) or Co-trimoxazole for short, has effective results. Broad spectrum and semi-synthetic tetracycline antibiotics like Minocycline and Doxycycline, as well as Clindamycin, a lincosamide antibiotic, had all shown successful remedies against mercer infection.

However, when antibiotic therapy response is poor or when the prognosis worsens, a different line of antibiotics are given by an IV route.

For severe mercer infection, Vancomycin (Vancocin) and Linezolid (Zyvox) had shown the best results and are now the drugs of preference.

Other antibiotics may be prescribed, such as Daptomycin (Cubicin), a lipopeptide antibiotic, Tigecycline (Tygacil), as well as Telavancin (Vibativ), a potent MRSA bactericidal lipoglycopeptide. An antibiotic combination from the streptogramin-class, Quinupristin/Dalfopristin (Synercid), shows strong antibacterial action against MRSA as well.

Prophylactic antibiotic therapy may be continued for up to 2 months to prevent recurrence.

For topical skin lesions, antibacterial ointment or creams may be prescribed. Drainage of pus and fluid may be performed when severe skin problems occur.

Preventive Measures and Home Remedies

MRSA infection is contagious. It is always important to practice good hygiene and sanitation. Never share or use contaminated items. Patient’s personal effects and even eating utensils should be segregated. Cover ruptured wounds with sterile dressings. Encourage frequent hand washing with antibacterial soaps and disinfect with alcohol or any antiseptic solution.

Other effective home remedies include the use of essential oils, such as lemon grass oil and tea-tree oil.

Mercer infection is a highly communicable and potentially dangerous disease. With early diagnosis and treatment, along with consistent application of preventive measures at home, MRSA infection is not complicated to deal with. However, before trying any treatments, especially with antibiotics, it is always prudent to seek your physician’s advice first.

How To Draw: 3 Tips To Drawing With Graphite Pencils

Before you begin to draw with graphite pencils, it is helpful to learn what each pencil grade means. Graphite artist pencils come in so many different grades it can be hard for a beginner to grasp and remember what each pencil grade indicates. Graphite pencils are coded universally, so that they are more easily identifiable.

The makeup of graphite art pencils is a combination of graphite and clay, usually in a wooden cylinder case.

The percentage of clay versus graphite in the mixture determines the grade of the graphite lead. A harder lead is denoted with an “H”-this mixture contains more clay than graphite, where as a softer lead is denoted with “B” for black-this mixture contains more graphite than clay. The HB pencil is in the middle and has equal amounts of clay and graphite.

You can use a harder lead, such as a 4H, to draw the lightest outlines and the most subtle gradations and a softer lead such as a 4B, for the darkest shadows in your drawings.

Even though there are nearly 20 different grades of graphite pencil, each producing a different range of value, if you utilize your pencils properly, you should only need to use a handful of the grades of graphite.

Some artists teach that to get the widest range of value all of the grades should be used. However when drawing with the 5-Pencil Method, only five pencil values are used. These are the pencil grades that will provide you with all of the range of value that you will need for realistic portraits and drawings, without compromising the quality and texture of your paper.

The technique uses the these five pencil grades-4H, 2H, HB, 2B, and 4B- and layers them one on top of another, until the intended value is reached.

When your graphite drawing turns out flat and overworked try these three tips to help give your drawing back its life.

Place the heal of your hand firmly on the drawing surface and hold your pencil at an angle of about 35 degrees. Your pencil should lightly sweep onto the surface of the paper as you make your stroke. It should land like an airplane and then sweep back off the surface with a follow through past its point of contact. The stroke should only be pulling in one direction, toward you, as the point of your pencil just grazes the surface of the paper. Be sure that you adjust your drawing to accommodate your stroke, but not necessarily your stroke to accommodate your drawing. To do this, rotate your drawing to take advantage of the natural curve and angle of your stroke. This will help you see the angles and shapes that are so important for creating correct proportions.

Make sure that the slightly curved and contoured line that you make with your stroke has a taper at both ends, This means that the line should be thinner and lighter at the beginning and end of your stroke with a gradual increase in value at the center as your pencil makes full contact with the drawing surface. This will also allow you to seamlessly extend lines of the same value, as tapered end overlaps tapered end. The taper is important to tackle, because it will make it much easier as you apply it to many aspects of your drawing. It will allow you to create incredible detail and bring a realistic quality to your rendering.

Instead of depending on pressure to make darker lines and values, you should add stroke on top of stroke to build values instead of merely pressing harder. The more pressure you add with a hard (or soft) pencil the more you increase the possibility of scoring or damaging your paper and it will become less likely that you are able to remove (erase) your mistakes or make modifications.

Myxedema Madness: When Being Crazy Isn’t in Your Head, But in Your Thyroid

Your husband watches in dismay as the men in the white coats chase you about the living room. Finally, with skill befitting a giant botanist, an attendant captures you in a large net and wrestles you to the ground. The second adds his expertise to the effort, his three-hundred-fifty-pound bulk, by sitting squarely atop your skull. You now consider your rage over the fallen flapjack to have been somewhat of an overreaction.

With the straightjacket chaffing at your neck, you call to your husband for help. Though his hesitation is brief, you see the fear in his eyes. He thinks you’ve lost your mind. You begin to tear up but, in a flash, you see that fatally wounded flapjack laying helplessly on the kitchen floor and the nightmarish rage overtakes you once again. Feeling it all slip away as they carry you to the ambulance, you make one last desperate effort to escape the beds at Bellevue. Looking over your shoulder you spot your husband, take deep breath and shout, “It’s not my fault – it’s my thyroid!”

Your thyroid? Yes indeed – a condition known as Myxedema Madness mimics many psychiatric conditions.

Myxedema, the medical term for hypothyroidism, is most commonly recognized by well-known physical symptoms: weight gain, puffiness about the face, dry skin, fatigue and a general slowing of the metabolism. However, the emotional signs and symptoms are quite often overlooked. Or, even more disturbingly, are attributed to non-existent mental health and psychiatric conditions.

Myxedema Madness is a catchall phrase, coined by Dr. Richard Asher in 1940, that encompasses a broad swath of emotions ranging from minor anxieties, doubts and worries to full-blown panic attacks and classic psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia. Myxedema Madness typically manifests as a simple bout of depression and is often treated as such, with antidepressants and advice to, “Slow down – take it easy for a bit.” Unfortunately, neither the pills nor the pontification strike at the root of the issue.

If let untreated, Myxedema Madness can quickly devolve into a deadly serious condition. Minor anxieties may give way to major psychoses, delusions, hallucinations and paranoia. An otherwise affable person may snap at the slightest annoyance, exhibiting a degree of rage previously unseen. The patient may be diagnosed as schizophrenic, psychotic or manic-depressive.

The risk of misdiagnosis is increased because hypothyroidism inordinately impacts women – particularly women over the age of forty. As a result, the emotional difficulties are often attributed to the “natural” process of aging, possibly due to the empty-nest syndrome, the onset of menopause or other adjustments and changes in life. The elderly, especially those already living in a group home setting, face a doubly difficult task in receiving both the proper diagnosis and treatment for this condition.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that diagnosis is actually quite straightforward. A simple blood test is all that’s needed to identify a thyroid problem. The best news? When properly treated with a daily thyroid hormone you’ll be your old self in no time flat. No more outbursts, no more voices and no more men in white coats. Which, unfortunately, means no more shouting, “It’s not my fault – it’s my thyroid!”

Yes… modern medicine is a double-edged sword indeed.

Negative Thinking Disorders

It’s Not Beware, It’s Be Aware

Negative thinking disorders are disorders that branch from extreme anxiety and are most commonly termed as anxiety disorders. Under this particular kind of disorder are disorders like obsessive compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress, panic disorder and social phobia. It’s the negative thinking in these negative thinking disorders or anxiety disorders that feeds the anxiety causing it to grow. This disorder is rooted in our thoughts. To cure it, we must change our negative thoughts into positive ones with ways like cognitive therapy.

It’s All the Same and Holding On

People who suffer from such negative thinking disorders believe that everything will stay the same and it would always be bad – nothing changes. By taking such a belief into their system of thinking, they’re closing doors or ways to get help. Treatment for such disorders is a slow process and by holding onto their disorder.

Speaking of holding on, with these types of disorders, people suffering from it hold on to traumatizing or horrible experiences. By doing so, they make it harder for themselves to escape the vicious cycle of negativity and anxiety. These negative thoughts are the main power source of these disorders as they are perpetually being thought of. It’s one thing to hold onto a memory but another situation completely when you obsess over it and fall trapped to a destructive thought cycle. Not only does it interrupt your daily life, it also tampers with your logic and may cause you to steer clear of certain situations and in effect limit you.

Those suffering from negative thinking disorders think in absolutes or extremes. They see that there can only be a completely bad or a completely good situation. This can be particularly difficult to deal with as they usually see the negative part of things more and magnify them, overshadowing whatever positive there is. To adjust to average thought, they must understand that worrying is completely normal to an extent and that there would always be pros and cons or good and bad in situations. They must know that whatever con or bad there is should not control or limit them. They must find what it is that’s causing them the panic attacks and obsessive thinking and avoid feeling helpless or powerless. We should all know that we are in control.

Negative thinking disorders may take different forms and magnitudes but one element stays the same – the negative thinking. Medication may help but at the end of the day, whatever happens, it’s something we have to sort out in our minds. Early intervention is best and being open to treatment would certainly make sure that progress would move along as it should. Life is good, it may not be easy but it is good. Discover it.

Bronchitis Natural Remedies – 5 Natural Ways To Control Bronchitis

Bronchitis is considered to be one among the most common respiratory disorders in the world. Infants, people with a weak respiratory system, children, old people, smokers, and people living in highly polluted atmospheres are vulnerable to this disorder. It constitutes the last stage of infection of the upper respiratory tract. People commonly contract this disorder during the cold months of the winter. Fortunately, there are a number of natural remedies for bronchitis.

Bronchitis normally follows bacterial or viral infection. Most cases of bronchitis are caused by viral infection. Sometimes bacteria are responsible for this condition, and in rare cases, fungal infection can lead to bronchitis. Natural remedies for bronchitis are available, whether it is acute or short-term bronchitis or chronic or long-term bronchitis.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Only laboratory tests can tell you whether bronchitis is bacterial, viral, or fungal. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that you visit a doctor as soon as you suspect bronchitis. Physicians will properly diagnose your condition with the help of laboratory test results.

These are the symptoms of acute bronchitis–hacking cough, contracting sensation around the areas of the eye, pain in the chest, breathlessness, and headaches. It is easy to treat viral bronchitis, especially with the help of natural remedies. The treatment plan includes plenty of rest, fluid intake, use of a humidifier inside your house. If you do not have a humidifier, simply hang wet blankets or towels inside your house.

Although it is easy to treat acute bronchitis, a lot of care is required for complete recovery. If neglected or mistreated, acute bronchitis will lead to chronic bronchitis, a condition that can permanently damage your pulmonary system and affect your day-to-day life. It is therefore crucial that you tackle it in its early stages by making use of natural remedies for bronchitis.

Natural Remedies

There are a number of natural remedies for bronchitis. They can, at least, be used to provide relief from bronchitis symptoms. However, these natural remedies for bronchitis cannot be taken on their own. A combination of these remedies with the usual, conventional medication constitutes the ideal treatment plan.

The following is a list of natural remedies for bronchitis that you can use:

1. If you are a cigarette smoker, quit smoking for good. In addition, avoid smoke from other smokers.

2. Take a long, hot shower or soak in a bathtub filled with hot, steaming water.

3. Wrap a towel around your head and inhale the fumes from a pot or a sink filled with hot, steaming water. Maintain a small distance between the hot pot or sink so that you don’t get burnt.

4. Do this before you go to bed. Apply hot, damp towels to your chest and back for many minutes. Dry yourself and change into warm clothes.

5. Avoid dusty, smoky, polluted places as these will worsen your condition.

In addition to the above natural remedies for bronchitis, consider the use of vitamin supplements to give your body the required energy to drive away the bacteria or virus. Other alternative methods you could use to treat bronchitis successfully include acupuncture, aromatherapy, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, and even oil massages.

An ideal combination of natural remedies for bronchitis with the usual medication can help you effectively treat this disorder without suffering from any side effects. Consequently, it can help you live a healthier, more productive life.

Taking special care of your body, especially your respiratory system is the best way of keeping respiratory disorders at bay. If, in spite of your care and precautions, you do contract bronchitis simply apply the previously mentioned natural remedies for bronchitis in conjunction with the conventional methods.

Female Pattern Hair Loss – What Is the Best Hair Loss Treatment?

In any group of women aged 80 years, 55% will be suffering from significant scalp hair loss.

Thinning hair

Female pattern hair loss is often first noticed when the amount of hair falling out each day increases and this results in hair thinning all over the scalp.

The normal amount of hair shed in the course of a day is 50 – 100 hairs. Therefore, women over 50 who experience more than 100 hairs per day may be seeing the effects of FPHL.

What are the causes of 50+ female hair loss?

Scientists believe the causes of hair loss and alopecia in mature women may be linked to the genes we inherit from our parents. Most women with FPHL do not have a hormonal imbalance as the hair loss cause.

How long does it take for female hair loss to progress?

Most commonly it starts happening after the menopause and progresses in ‘fits and starts’. A noticeable increase may last for 3 – 6 months and then the amount may stabilize for between 6 – 18 months – until the hair growth cycle begins again. Without the best treatment,it usually progresses towards alopecia (baldness).

Chemical treatments for hair loss

FPHL cannot be cured. However, there are some very useful products on the market. By altering the balance of hormones produced in the body, they are able to prevent it from getting any worse, by slowing down or stopping the hair falling out.

Hormone blockers

Some treatments for mature women are based on drugs that block the production of certain hormones. These can be taken as tablets and combined with a hormone solution which is massaged into the scalp.

Hormone blocking treatments need to be followed for at least 6 months before they can start having any effect. This sort of treatment varies from country to country as per regulations. Long term medication is usually necessary to continue preventing hair loss. No products can guarantee to make hair grow faster or create thicker hair, but it has been clinically proved that some women do experience hair re-growth.

All hormonal treatments must be prescribed and supervised by a medical doctor.

Physiotherapy – Management of Hip Replacement

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the commonest joint degeneration condition in the world, resulting in huge amounts of pain and suffering, work loss, expense and disability. Ageing of western developed populations, soon to be followed by some developing countries such as China, will place an increasing burden on medical services as the occurrence of OA rises steadily with age. There will be an increasing need to provide medical and physiotherapy treatment for OA over the next 50 years and for many thousands of people this will involve joint replacement.

Medical interventions can be rated on a scale which calculates the improvement in quality of life which results and here hip replacement comes out top of all treatments. The 1960s saw its development into a standard treatment for hip arthritis but the 21st century has seen the technique evolve into a complex and predictable approach to many hip conditions, with excellent fifteen year plus results. Once conservative treatments have been exhausted due to a worsening joint then joint replacement becomes the standard choice.

Total hip replacement involves removal of the arthritic joint surfaces and their replacement with metal and plastic components. The top of the femur, the ball of the hip joint, is removed and the socket is reamed out to make it bigger to accept the new part. Cement is pressurized into the bony areas and a steel alloy femoral component with a ball and stem is inserted down the femur and a plastic cup of ultra high density polyethylene into the socket. The metal-plastic interface allows very low friction and wear, ensuring a long life for the joint.

On return from operation the physiotherapist will check the patient’s operative record, medical observations and assess the patient. Initial physio treatment consists of checking respiratory status and the muscle power and feeling in the legs to exclude nerve injury. Exercises are given to restore normal movement although an epidural can cause loss of movement in the legs and delay progress. The physiotherapist will then mobilise the patient with an assistant, taking care of the hip precautions, stand them up and walk them a short distance with elbow crutches or a frame.

Toes, ankles, quadriceps, hip flexion and buttock exercises continue to restore normal muscle activity to the legs and maintain the circulation. Routine painkillers should be taken as this helps patients get up and about and once safe they can get up three times a day or more with a helper to walk, toilet and wash. Usual precautions are taken and when sat out the chair must be the correct height and normally patients do not put their feet up whilst sitting.

After hip replacement patients require instruction and correction to achieve a normal walking pattern, develop muscular power and improved function. Physiotherapists teach the appropriate gait at the time, often starting with “step to” where the patient moves the walking aid, steps the operated leg forwards and steps up to it with the other leg, a stable and safe pattern. Progression is to ‘step through” where the unaffected leg steps beyond the other in an approximation of a normal walking pattern. Patients often progress naturally then to a gait where they move both the crutches and the affected leg forward at the same time and start to walk in a fully natural pattern.

Once they return for their follow up appointment at six weeks after operation patients have often achieved a good gait, reasonable hip strength and returned to some activities of daily living. The physio may advise a stick if they are unsteady, slow or older, and they can gradually regain their previous abilities provided they observe the precautions to prevent hip dislocation:  Avoid hip flexion over 90 degrees by not sitting down in low seating, not sitting down or standing up too quickly, not bending over to the floor quickly and not crouching.  Weight bearing on the leg and rotating the body weight is unwise.  Get medical advice if an infection develops e.g. in the bladder, chest or teeth, as this can transfer to an artificial joint.  Avoid crossed legs in sitting.

The Difference Between Cochlear Implants And Esteem Ear Implant

You are probably confused about how a cochlear implant differs from an Esteem implant. Well, let me tell you that these two devices are not the same. Many might associate these state of the art implants as rivals in the field of medical technology so let me explain this further.

A person with difficulty in hearing has different reasons why this is so. Some may have problems with the anatomy of the middle ear while some may also have problems within the inner ear. Cochlear implants correct inner ear problems where the cochlea or the structures inside the cochlea fail to function. Esteem implants however corrects individuals with conduction hearing problems or middle ear problems.

How Cochlear Implants Work

People who have inner ear problems might not benefit much from using a hearing aid. The most important organ for hearing is the cochlea that converts sound waves into electrical impulses and sends it to the brain. When the cochlea or any structures inside it such as the hair cells or the nerves are damaged, transmission of electrical signals to the brain cannot happen. As a solution to this, cochlear implants were made. The cochlear implants will serve as an alternative to the damaged cochlea. After the sounds waves pass the middle ear, it will then be directed to the implant, by passing the damaged cochlea. The implant, now functioning as the cochlea will then be sending electrical impulses to the brain which can then be interpreted as sound.

How Esteem Hearing Implants Work

When structures of the middle ear are damaged, sound waves could not be relayed to the cochlea thus no electrical signals will be sent to the brain. The Esteem implant works as an alternate to the damaged middle ear structures. When sounds are perceived by the ear, it will by-pass the damaged structures and will pass through the implant and on to the functioning cochlea. Most individuals who can be recipients of the Esteem implant are experiencing moderate to severe deafness. This category of hearing loss may still be corrected with the use of a hearing aid, however, an esteem implant promises clearer sound.

Now that it’s clear, let me point out that these two implants address different degrees of hearing loss. Cochlear implants are for those who have severe to profound hearing loss while Esteem implants are for individuals having moderate to severe hearing loss. Ask your doctor.
