Polyarteritis Nodosa (PAN) – Effective Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Polyarteritis nodosa, also known as PAN, is a rare autoimmune disorder involving spontaneous inflammation of the arteries which causes symptoms such as fever, pain, fatigue, weight loss, bleeding, and dysfunction of affected organs. Inflammation of the arteries can be quite severe and may cause permanent damage to affected organs such as intestines and kidneys. Spontaneous bleeding from multiple sites can also prove to be fatal. PAN is therefore a very serious disorder which needs urgent attention.

PAN involves multiple systems of the body and usually affects muscles, joints, skin, intestines, nerves and kidneys. Though it is more common in the elderly population, it may affect individuals of all age groups including children. Conservative modern management of this condition involves the use of steroids and immune suppressant drugs. Though there is an initial good response to these medicines, in the long run, most patients’ condition invariably starts deteriorating. PAN may therefore cause serious morbidity and mortality.

In this scenario, Ayurvedic herbal treatment can be judiciously and effectively used to combat and successfully treat this disease. Herbal medicines can be given in high doses and for prolonged periods in order to treat inflammation of the arteries, bring about immunomodulation, as well as give symptomatic treatment to affected organs and prevent permanent damage. It is very important to commence treatment at the earliest possible so as to prevent long-term, irreversible damage.

According to the Ayurvedic pathophysiology of the disease, disturbed Vata Dosha causes the autoimmune status, and disturbed and increased Pitta Dosha causes inflammation of the arteries, thereby resulting in damage to various systems and organs. Ayurvedic treatment is therefore aimed at correcting the Vata Dosha and reducing damaging aspects of increased Pitta Dosha. This can be done using a combination of oral herbal tablet therapy and special Panchkarma procedures. These include induced purgation to treat Pitta Dosha and a series of medicated enemas known as ‘Tikta Ksheer Basti’ to treat the Vata Dosha.

While patients with mild forms of the disease go into remission within two to four months of commencing Ayurvedic herbal treatment, individuals suffering from a more severe form of the disease require prolonged treatment ranging from six to eight months or more. However, almost all patients suffering from PAN can be successfully treated so that the disease goes into a complete remission. Medicines can then be continued in a low those or with reduced frequency, so as to prevent a relapse of the disease. As compared to herbo-mineral Ayurvedic formulations, it is preferable to use herbal medicines since these are safe even with the use of very high doses of the medicines, and for prolonged periods.

Patients who present with bleeding from multiple sites of the body, and demonstrate severe damage to major internal organs are best treated in the intensive care units of well equipped hospitals. However, once the acute symptoms have been well controlled, it is better to institute Ayurvedic treatment so that the disease can be completely cured. Ayurvedic herbal treatment thus has a definite role to play in the successful and effective management of PAN.

The Differences Between An LPN And An Ultrasound Technician

An ultrasound technician or sonographer differs from an LPN in many ways. An ultrasound technician is someone who captures images of a patient’s internal structures through the use of ultrasound equipment, while an LPN is a person licensed by the state that provides care to old, disabled, injured, terminally ill, or sick patients. LPNs can be found working in a broader range of work settings and they also have more tasks than sonographers.

LPN Job Description

An LPN’s duties and responsibilities range from administrative or clerical tasks to clinical practice. LPNs gather and record the patient’s history and symptoms, they keep records, and they make appointments. They also take vital signs, prepare and administer injections, help patients prepare for medical exams, collect test samples, assist supervisors in performing laboratory procedures and tests, treat wounds, and provide bedside care to patients and assist them with daily living tasks. Furthermore, LPNs offer emotional support to patients and their family members. They can be found working in hospitals, clinics, physician’s offices, nursing care facilities, schools, plus many more.

To become an LPN, a candidate has to take a program, which is commonly competed in approximately one year. The program is divided into clinical practice and classroom instruction. Clinical practice takes place at a hospital or a clinic. Classroom instruction focuses on nursing courses such as anatomy and physiology, fundamentals of nursing, psychiatric nursing, nutrition, maternity and child health, and pharmacology.

Salary And Advancement

An LPNs average salary is around $39,000 annually. LPNs have the choice to advance their career into registered nurse. If that is what they desire, then they will have to acquire a nursing diploma, an associate’s degree in nursing, or a bachelor’s degree in nursing. All candidates will need to pass the NCLEX-RN exam in order to practice as a registered nurse.

Ultrasound Technician Job Description

An ultrasound tech analyzes and interprets diagnostic images taken with ultrasound equipment. Ultrasound techs provide summaries, either oral or written, of technical findings. They direct the patient’s position and they explain the ultrasound procedures to the patient. They also perform equipment maintenance and they keep records. Ultrasound techs can be found working in hospitals, clinics, physician’s offices, and diagnostic imaging centers.

Most ultrasound techs hold an associate’s degree in medical sonography. Associate’s degree programs can be completed in two years. For those that want to earn their bachelor’s degree, four-year programs are available. Completing a one-year program to earn a vocational certificate in sonography is the minimum qualification available to those who want to become an ultrasound tech. Coursework may include classes in patient care, medical ethics, anatomy, physiology, and basic physics.

Salary And Advancement

The average annual wage of ultrasound techs is around $62,000. They can seek advancement by specializing in more than one area. Specializing in two or more areas will expand their opportunities. They can become educators, administrators, or researchers with additional education and experience.

What To Choose

Being an LPN is as rewarding as being an ultrasound technician. Deciding what career path to take greatly depends on your preferences and your skills and abilities. It is important that you examine each career carefully and learn which one is more suitable for you before you make your final decision.

14 PharmCAS Pharmacy Schools That Do Not Require the PCAT For 2010 and Tips to Gain Acceptance

The PCAT is the Pharmacy College Admissions Test used by most pharmacy schools as one of the admission criteria. Luckily, not all pharmacy schools require the PCAT. In fact, there are many students every year who do not have to study nor pay for the PCAT and only apply to schools that do not require it. For these Pharm.D. programs that do not require the PCAT, other factors such as your grade point average (GPA), work experience (not mandatory but strengthens your application), interview performance, letter of recommendations, ECs, and other factors (which I discuss in my other article) determine your eligibility for acceptance.

Pharmacy Schools in the U.S. that do not require the PCAT:

1. California Northstate

2. University of California – San Diego

3. University of California – San Francisco

4. Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences – Boston MA

5. Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences – Manchester NH

6. Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences – Worcester MA

7. Oregon State University

8. University of the Pacific

9. Pacific University Oregon

10. University of Southern California

11. Purdue University

12. Touro University – California

13. Washington State University

14. Western University

(Currently all California Pharmacy Schools do not require the PCAT).

Some application tips:

-Find out if the schools you are applying for are on a rolling admission system. If they are, it is imperative that you turn in your application as soon as possible as it will increase your chances of gaining an interview and in turn, a nice envelope with your acceptance.

-Prepare for the interview by going over previous interview questions. These can be found on Student Doctor’s interview feedback section. I have also listed the most common interview pharmacy school questions in another article. During your preparation, do not make your answers sound rehearsed but natural and well-thought out.

-Gain Pharmacy Work Experience. Although not mandatory, what better way to show an admission committee that you are serious about pursuing this career path than working in a pharmacy. You may want to consider obtaining a pharmacy technician license to have more responsibilities at a pharmacy. Without a license, you can still volunteer or work as a pharmacy clerk in most states.

-If you are an international student, you may also want to check to see if the school require the TOEFL by checking the required tests chart on the PharmCAS website.

Finding Ways to Keep Your Mind Off of Drugs

One of the most difficult things that people with addictions struggle with is to keep their minds off drugs. The longer a person has used drugs or alcohol to cope with life, use it as a coping mechanism, the harder they will find to stop using. Why? Because they are programed in some way to automatically think about alcohol or drugs to make themselves feel better.

Let me ask you a question:

If I said to you to try as hard as you can to not think about a pink Elephant with a purple tail, what is the first thing that comes up in your mind? You see, our mind is made to focus on what stands out and takes our attention. As soon as I mentioned the Elephant, you would have pictured this in your mind, and the thought of this weird Elephant will stick in your mind for some time. So it is with an addiction. What you focus on is what you will get. Have you ever experienced watching TV and then an advertisement comes on about some food or drink, and then you get the taste for it and want it. The more you think about it the more you want it. It is no different with an addiction. The more you have that in your mind the more you will want it.

A successful outpatient addiction program will work because it focuses on helping people get what they want not what they don’t want. Most people keep thinking about what they they don’t want when they are giving up their drug of choice. They tell themselves that they must say no, that they have to be strong and stop the cravings. But what ends up happening is that they desire it more and more until they lapse or worse relapse.

One of the things that an outpatient addiction program’s aim should be, is to help people learn new ways to focus on what they want in their life. So, as people get their life back they start to desire to get their family back, get a job or promotion, learn stress and anger management techniques, be able to cope with emotional distress, learn good communication skills, have a great support network and most of all, understand that whatever they focus on is what they get, whether positive or negative.

Here are some very important principles that anyone who wants to stop an addiction from controlling then can do to maximise their success:

  • use the two “D’s” principle – delay and distract: If you are craving then tell yourself that you will not use for 10 mins (delay) then you find something to do that you know will help you stop thinking about your cravings (distract).
  • Call someone who knows you and has already offered to help you in these circumstances
  • Get out of the house and go for a walk (but don’t get into trouble by walking into a risky situation)
  • Listen to music or play music
  • Read through your goals and plans for the future, or write them if you don’t have them already
  • Experience mindfulness, by allowing yourself to feel
  • Do relaxation techniques
  • Meditate
  • Do something fun, watch comedy, have a laugh

In a simple way, the way to maximise your success in stopping an addiction for good is to start living your life the way you want to and have desired to, not avoid using drugs or drinking alcohol. It is also vital that you chose an outpatient addiction program that is suited to your needs.

Patenting Homeopathic Medicines

Because so many homeopathic medicaments have been in use for a very long time, homeopathic medicine suppliers and practitioners don’t always think of patenting new formulations. However, homeopathic formulations are patentable, and effective protection can be secured with a carefully drafted application.

Homeopathic medicaments are approved for use and inclusion in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia by the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia Convention. A large number of medicaments were included in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia because of their successful historical use. However, new formulations are also being approved and added, and these can be patented. Seeking patent protection is important because of the significant research needed to find a particularly effective formulation.

A good patent application for a homeopathic medicament includes a thorough description of the ingredients and their preparation, a listing of the formulation variations and ranges, delivery methods, and examples of successful use and other test results. The medicament should then be claimed to distinguish it from earlier similar formulations.

Homeopathic medicines are often claimed in the form “A medicament comprising a homeopathically potentised form of (the ingredients and doses).” Additional claims are then added specifying various formulations and variations of the ingredients and doses. The ingredients will often appear in the formulations of other homeopathic medicines. The Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia should be consulted to assure that the proposed formulation is not too similar to prior formulations. Most professional patent searchers and patent attorneys don’t have this particular expertise, so a homeopathic practitioner should be consulted.

In addition, a patent search should be performed, focusing on the particular ingredients. This will uncover potentially similar uses of the ingredients in non-homeopathic remedies such as herbal supplements. The claims should be written to distinguish the new medicament from all previous formulations.

After the independent claims are written, a description of the medicament should be drafted. The description should include tables showing examples of formulation variations, ranges of acceptable formulation variations, or both. These tables and ranges can then be used to draft the dependent claims. The variations should include both broad ranges of formulations as well as narrower ranges around well-tested and successful formulations.

The delivery method should also be described. These methods may not be claimed, but it can be useful later on to have mentioned the various internal and topical ways that the medicament could be used.

Finally, the application should include examples of successful outcomes resulting from the use of the formulation or its ingredients. These can include organized studies, successful uses by an individual, and evidence of the efficacy of the ingredients outside of the formulation. The patent office does not evaluate or approve clinical effectiveness, but patent examiners like to see that there is a good reason for patenting the formulation.

By including claims that were drafted with an eye to similar formulations, a good description of variations, mention of delivery methods, and examples of successful use, homeopathic medicaments can be successful protected.

Use Vitamin E to Restore Penis Youth

Inappropriate lifestyle can take a toll on a man’s sex life. Poor diet, stress, oxidation and a lack of penis-specific vitamins can affect the health of the male organ and its function. While there are many natural products touted to improve the health of the penis, vitamin E is one of the few with real science to back it. Vitamin E is a known antioxidant that has become popular over the last couple of decades for protecting against cardiovascular disease. What most men do not know is that this fat-soluble antioxidant is also a powerful anti-aging agent that can benefit peripheral circulation to the penis, nerve sensitivity, and enzymatic-control of erections.

Circulation is of key importance when considering the health of the penis and sexual function. Blood flow to the penis is what enables the organ to harden and become erect in the first place. Without a strong heart muscle, clear arteries, lots of oxygen and good peripheral blood flow, there isn’t sufficient fluid to create a strong erection. Vitamin E is a key nutrient for cardiovascular health. It improves easy circulation by acting as a natural blood thinner, similar to aspirin, causing the blood to become less viscous and more fluid. Researchers from the Department of Physiology at Vidyasagar College in India also state that vitamin E protects against heart attacks, strokes, and oxidative damage to the heart muscles. Vitamin E supplements and a high vitamin E diet are considered both as prophylactic and treatment to all manner of cardiovascular diseases.

Nerve Function

Vitamin E plays a key role in protecting nerves from desensitization. As men age the penis nerves can lose some of their sensitivity, possibly due to circulation problems, oxidative damage, local trauma or rough treatment of the penis. Vitamin E directly protects nerves from oxidative damage and disease, and keeping vitamin E levels high ensures peripheral nerves in penis continue to function optimally. In an animal study published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine, researchers from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, U.S.A., discovered that nerve fibers with a low vitamin E-content were more likely to suffer from peripheral nerve problems. Peripheral nerves, such as in the penis, are coated in various fatty substances (including vitamin E and omega 6 which act to protect the nerves and enhance nerve signaling. This highlights the need for men to ensure they are getting adequate vitamin E from either their diets or from supplementation.

Vitamin E may be able to treat impotence and sexual dysfunction directly, acting in a similar way to PDE-5 inhibitors such as sildenafil. During a study published in BJU International in December, 2010, researchers found that vitamin E supplementation increased the production of nitric oxide in penis tissues. Nitric oxide is an enzymes that stimulates the dilation of blood vessels in the penis, allowing blood to engorge the tissues and cause erection to occur. By increasing the production of nitric oxide, vitamin E can potentially be used as a natural treatment for male dysfunction and impotence. Far safer and less toxic than sildenafil, vitamin E would also have a beneficial effect on overall cardiovascular health, where sildenafil may have heart and blood pressure complications.

Penis Skin Health and Best Source of Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an important component of skin tissues, especially on the glans, foreskin and body of the penis. Vitamin E doesn’t just work as an antioxidant — it effects the elasticity, moisturization, strength and the youth of the skin. Studies show that vitamin E also improves cellular healing and reduces scarring. These factors are important, as roughened skin on the penis can lead to nerves losing their fine sensitivity. Rough, dry skin on the penis can occur because of dehydration, poor nutrition, not using enough lubricant, inflammatory skin conditions, broken skin and scarring. The preferred method for application of vitamin E is as a topical crème that permits direct absorption of vitamin E into penis skin where immediate and direct benefits can occur (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil). Vitamin E is an effective nutrient for all of these factors, and can be used as both an oral supplement and as a local vitamin E creme.

Cough Syrup Fertility Miracle – Can Cough Syrup Help You to Get Pregnant?

If you have been struggling to get pregnant, or if you are just starting to try for your first baby there may be a secret ingredient to help increase your chances of conceiving. What is this surprising fertility miracle? Believe it or not; cough syrup. Fertility experts are not all in agreement but there is some scientific evidence that proves cough medicine may actually help women conceive. But there are a few things you need to know about cough syrup and pregnancy.

The key ingredient you want to be on the lookout for when choosing a cough medicine for fertility purposes is guaifenesin. This ingredient can help you get pregnant by thinning your cervical fluid. This allows the sperm to pass through your cervix to the egg more easily.

Why does guaifenesin work so well? It is a common ingredient in cough medicine or other expectorants that relieve congestion by thinning and liquefying mucus in your lungs. It actually does this on all mucous membranes in your body so it can thin your cervical fluid too. Make sure you pick a cough medicine with guaifenesin as its only active ingredient.

You must be tracking your ovulation for it to help. If you are not producing much cervical fluid when you are ovulating then guaifenesin may be what you need to conceive. The key to this is tracking your ovulation and checking your cervical fluid; that is the only way to know when the appropriate time to take the guaifenesin. Of course some women just take the cough medicine throughout their entire ovulation period but it tends to work best on women who produce some quantity of cervical fluid.

If you choose to try using cough syrup to help you get pregnant be sure guaifenesin is the only active ingredient. It bears repeating because a cough medicine with an antihistamine can actually decrease cervical fluid. So again, choose the right cough syrup. Fertility chances can decrease if you choose the wrong one. Take two teaspoons three times per day while you are ovulating.

Going Through Depression After A Car Accident

A car accident, sometimes called Road Traffic Accidents or RTA, are incidents where in cars and other possible objects collide in open traffic. Sometimes traffic collisions may also refer to an automobile striking a human or animal or even another vehicle. According to the World Health Organization, motor vehicle accidents kill an estimated 1.2 million people worldwide each year, and injure about forty times this number. People may not notice this, but the road is far more dangerous than being on air or at sea. Accidents may occur at any place and at any time to any one, even on the most unsuspecting moment.

Imagine getting involved in one of these car accidents. In every incident there may be several parties included but there is only one bottom line, every one gets to have damages done on their part. It can be small, large, physical, emotional, material, but still, there would be damages. Let us say you were the fortunate one who had the least injuries and damages. You may have minimal, if none, physical pain and discomfort. But the damages these accidents have brought extend far more than just that. The psychological effects that a car accident brings to a person varies from just experiencing mild depression to a more severe kind of trauma.

As we all know, depression is a state of mind caused by several factors, including prolonged stress at work or at home, separation from an important person, or loss of a loved one. Negative thoughts and events can influence a person’s state of mind, and can make or break their health as well.

Depression bought by traffic collisions or car accidents can bring a state of intense sadness. It can be a major depressive disorder that a person may have melancholies or despair that has advanced to a point of being disruptive to that person’s daily activities and social functioning. Flash backs of the event that has transpired will cause feelings of sadness and increase the person’s depression. Such a disaster like this would take away the person’s self control and could cause excessive emotional upheaval. A traumatic event like a car accident can give out more distress for one person than for another, and that alone could change a person’s life.

Recovering from depression can be affected by a traumatic event, in this case a car accident. The more difficult and stressful the ordeal on the accident is, the more depressed a person becomes. For example, if a family member is in a coma for several days from a car accident, it would prolong the state of depression of his/her other relatives as well. Car accidents do happen everyday, and it may happen to anyone you know. Keeping safety first, fastening seat belts, and having extra precautions on the surroundings, these little things would help in preventing such accidents on the road. As far as we know, depression often goes along with sadness, and by preventing accidents, one may also help in preventing the feelings of depression.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Liquid Medicines Over Tablets And Pills?

Every person needs to take medicine at some point in their life and the normal format usually comes in the form of a pill or a capsule. Patients who find it difficult to take medication, like very young patients or older patients are given liquid forms of the medication. Most people are aware of the liquid OTC analgesic formulations for babies and toddlers, as well as the liquid cold and flu remedies marketed for adults, but few realize that it is possible to obtain alternative formulations for many prescription drugs when the patient has trouble swallowing pills. As always, when taking any medications, whether they are sold by prescription or over the counter, care must be taken to make sure that there will not be any adverse side effects when two or more medications are taken concurrently. You always need to tell your physician and pharmacist about any medicines you are currently taking.

Normally, individuals who take their medications in the form of pills or capsules do not have any difficulties in swallowing the medicine. These may come in several different sizes that range from fairly small to others that are rather big. Sometimes patients have trouble swallowing because of a condition called dysphagia. This condition may develop when one is young and persist throughout life, or it may develop later in life, brought on by an illness or condition that impacts the ability to swallow. When this happens, the best thing to do is to consult with the physician or pharmacist to find out if the prescribed medication comes in a different form, such as a liquid, that would be easier to swallow. There is a lengthy formulation and development process that drugs in a liquid formulation must go through prior to being prescribed for utilization by patients. This is because it is essential that the drug is evenly dispersed throughout the formulation. Liquid formulas frequently state on the label that the bottle needs to be shaken up before ingesting the medicine in order to ensure that the medication is evenly distributed and has not settled at the bottom of the bottle.

It is necessary for the design of liquid formulations to be a bit different than that of tablets so that the patient receives the proper amount of medication without imbibing large quantities of liquids. In addition, it must include an additive that masks the taste of the drug, which is frequently quite bitter and foul tasting. Normally, the average dose is not more than 5 millilitres for children, but adults usually need to take the medicine in a higher dosage. Normally the medication comes as a syrup, mixture or solution and includes sweeteners and flavouring agents to disguise the drug’s taste. Frequently fluids with a thicker viscosity are utilized so that they are not as likely to be spilled or inhaled in error. Additionally, it might have other ingredients that help the drug to stay in the liquid, which will ensure that the drug is going to be effective.

A special measuring spoon comes with liquid medications to ensure that the proper dosage is administered every time. A recent study revealed that when the special measuring spoon was not utilized, the dosage size could vary greatly due to the fact that teaspoons are not made in standard sizes. If you learn that you cannot easily use the spoon that is provided to you, ask your pharmacist for a special medicine cup or an oral syringe so that you will be able to measure the proper dosage correctly.

There are a few basic steps to follow when taking liquid medicine:

1. Be sure that you are aware of the dose you will need to consume.

2. Measure the dosage into the spoon, cup or syringe with care

3. Once the dose has been administered, clean the dispenser thoroughly so that it will be ready when the time comes for the next dose to be administered.

4. Be sure to store the bottle properly; some drugs, like antibiotics, may need to be refrigerated.

A medicine dispenser can be greatly beneficial for any medication that needs to be taken long term. These pumps are designed to fit into the medicine bottle and dispense a specific amount with each pump. These devices will make it easier to provide a correct quantity of a liquid medication when it is administered, especially at night when the lighting may be poor and in situations where dexterity or vision problems are present. Any issues should be discussed with your pharmacist or doctor.

Proper storage of medication is essential and any instructions with regard to the dosage and timing of administration must be followed exactly. In addition, any old medication should be taken to a pharmacy for proper disposal.

What You Should Know About Tattoos

I will try to be as impartial as I can, what is sort of hard I have the tattoo bug….but I do not want to go around telling people what I think is best, getting a tattoo is a serious thing, is something that you will be with you, engraved in your body for quite a while…so I decided to give you guys not a speech but to do more or less and encyclopaedia kind of thing….I hope you all do not fall a sleep while reading it.

Tattoo Basics

Artists create tattoos by injecting ink into a person’s skin. To do this, they use an electrically powered tattoo machine that resembles (and sounds like) a dental drill. The machine moves a solid needle up and down to puncture the skin between 50 and 3,000 times per minute. The needle penetrates the skin by about a millimetre and deposits a drop of insoluble ink into the skin with each puncture.

The tattoo machine has remained relatively unchanged since its invention by Samuel O’Reilly in the late 1800s. O’Reilly based his design on the autographic printer, an engraving machine invented by Thomas Edison. Edison created the printer to engrave hard surfaces. O’Reilly modified Edison’s machine by changing the tube system and modifying its rotary-driven electromagnetic oscillating unit to enable the machine to drive the needle.

Modern tattoo machines have several basic components:

o A sterilized needle

o A tube system, which draws the ink through the machine

o An eletric motor

o A foot pedal, like those used on sewing machines, which controls the vertical movement of the needle.

Creating the Tattoo: Sterilization & Prep Work

A tattoo machine creates a puncture wound every time it injects a drop of ink into the skin. Since any puncture wound has the potential for infection and disease transmission, much of the application process focuses on safety. Tattoo artists use sterilization, disposable materials and hand sanitation to protect themselves and their clients.

To eliminate the possibility of contamination, most tattoo materials, including inks, ink cups, gloves and needles, are single use. Many single-use items arrive in sterile packaging, which the artist opens in front of the customer just before beginning work.

Before working on customers, tattoo artists wash and inspect their hands for cuts and abrasions. Then, they should do the following:

o Disinfect the work area with an EPA-approved viricide.

o Place plastic bags on spray bottles to prevent cross-contamination.

o Explain the sterilization process to the client.

o Remove all equipment from sterile packaging in front of the client.

o Shave and disinfect (with a mixture of water and antiseptic soap) the area to be tattooed.

How Much Does it Hurt?

People describe the sensation of getting a tattoo as similar to bee stings, sunburn or being pinched. Some say they experience a slight tickling or “pins and needles.” Individual pain tolerance, the size and type of tattoo, and the skill of the artist all contribute to the amount of pain. Location also makes a difference – skin that rests right over a bone is more sensitive.

Caring for a New Tattoo

o Remove the bandage one to two hours after completion.

o Wash gently with cool or lukewarm water, using a mild antibacterial soap

o Pat dry. (Don’t rub!)

o Apply very thin coats of antibacterial ointment and work into the skin. Too much ointment can pull colour out of the tattoo.

o Avoid soaking the tattoo in water or letting the shower pound directly on it.

o Avoid the sun, sea and swimming pull until healed.

o Refrain from picking at scabs. They will fall off as the tattoo heals, usually in one to three weeks.

o Use ice packs if swelling or redness occurs.

o Call a doctor if you have even the slightest signs of infection.

Some health & Safety Precautions

o Checking gloves for pinhole tears during tattooing, since petroleum-based ointment erodes latex

o Pouring ink in advance, using clean tissue to open ink bottles during tattooing and preventing nozzles from touching contaminated surfaces

o Patting tubes dry after rinsing during color changes – never blowing excess water from them

o Spraying liquid soap into a tissue, not directly onto bleeding area, since blood can become airborne when the spray hits it

o Giving pens used for drawing on the skin, which should be medical grade and sterile, to the client

The tattoo artist must:

o Wash hands thoroughly and often.

o Inspect hands for cuts or sores and cover them with bandages.

o Remove hangnails and keep nails short to prevent punctures to gloves.

o Refrain from tattooing when experiencing lesions, dermatitis or allergic reactions.

Identifying a Safe Tattoo Parlour

Other than the use of universal precautions and laws requiring minors to have parental permission, few regulations cover tattooing. Licensing usually involves completing a health department course on infectious disease transmission and passing an exam, but no governing body inspects tattoo businesses. Laws allow anyone to buy a machine, get a license and start tattooing whether or not they have any artistic ability, a situation that professional tattoo artists object to.

Here are some basic steps for choosing a safe tattoo parlour

o Look around to see if the studio is clean and professional.

o Ask questions: Is there an autoclave? Are the needles and other materials single-use? Are EPA-approved disinfectants used? Do the tattoo artists wear gloves? Professional artists won’t mind the questions.

o Watch the artist and pay attention to health and safety precautions.

o Watch the artist open all needles before beginning work.

o Ask about the staff’s professional memberships. These are not required, but artists who participate may have the most current information about trends, innovations and safety issues.

Ok, now you have a tattoo!!!!!

Benefits and Uses of Neem, Tulsi, Wheat Grass and Amla on Skin Care

You might be surprised to know that skin is the largest organ in human body. It is a kind of sheath that separates us from the outer environment. It protects our internal organs from getting exposed to the harsh climatic condition pravelling outside. Any problem in skin or any kind of infection to the skin can causes threat to the internal organs. It helps in keeping our vital organ from hanging outside the body getting infected very easily. It also helps in maintaing body temperature. More importantly it helps us in perceiving sensation of touch.

According to modern sciences skin is made up of three layers. Named epidermis the outer layer, dermis the middle layer and subcutaneous fat the inner layer. Ayurveda believes that skin has six layers.

Epidermis is the outer most layer of the skin and is the part of the skin, which is visible with our normal eyes. This layer of skin keeps on producing new cells, as 30000 to 40000 cells are lost every minute. It contains a very important content name melalin that is a very talked about things now a days. Melalin imparts colour to our skin. More the melalin content darker is the complexion. Actually melanin is a protective device of your skin that helps you to protect from sunburns and very harmful ultraviolet rays or more commonly called UV rays. This is the reason tanning occurs in people who get exposed to sun. But melalin production is not enough to give all round protection to protect skin from dehydration and cancerous cell production. Important thing about epidermis is that it is composed of dead cells hence is non vascular i.e. it does not have blood supply and nervous supply.

Second is the dermis layer that lies below the epidermis. As it is beneath the epidermis hence dermis is not visible. Dermis serves very important function in the protective and perceptive role that skin plays. It serves many functions, as it possesses nerves ending, vascular supplies and glands (both oil or sebaceous glands and sweat glands). Due to presence of these factors we can perceive the touch sensation. Vascularity to the skin initiates in dermis and hence helps in providing proper nourishment to the skin cells. Dermis also contains sebaceous glands or more commonly called oil gland, which helps our skin in lubrication thus helping it from catching any infection. It makes our skin work as raincoats therefore help skin from getting sogged and swelled away in water. Sweat glands play a very important role in our life. Most important of all is that it helps in maintaing our body temperature; secondly it plays an excretory role by excreting out harmful toxins that might have formed in our body; thirdly it helps in protecting our body from microorganism as it possess antibacterial properties.

Third and the most important of all the layers is the subcutaneous fatty layer. Its role is to work as a shock absorber in he body and to maintain body heat from getting transferred to outside temperature. It also helps in holding internal organs tightly as it is present beneath the skin. This also contains a very peculiar feature that only mammals possess i.e. hair follicles. This layer is full of hair follicles out of which hair grows out. Nourishment of hairs depends upon the sebaceous glands, which opens into the hair follicle thus proving it with shine and nutrients.

Proper distribution of oil and moisture is there that makes it a balanced skin i.e. not excessively dry and not excessively greasy. It is clear and free from blemishes

2. Dry skin: Skin is said to be dry, when skin is dull, patchy, reddened and flaky especially around eyes. Dry skin may cause formation of fine lines on cheeks, under eyes and corners of mouth. These conditions happen when oil or sebaceous glands are not supplying good nourishment and lubrication to the skin. If proper care is not given to the skin then it may lead to initiation of wrinkles in early age.

3. Oily or greasy skin: This kind of skin is thick, dull in colour and shiny in appearance. Due to over secretions of oils or sebum through oil gland, makes skin pores open and skin becomes sticky, which attracts dirt and dust from the environment. Due to this tendency, dirt and dust particles blocks the skin pores which are already widely open in oily skin leads to problems like black head, white head, acne and other skin related problems.

4. Combination skin: Commonly seen skin texture which is the combination of two kind of skin i.e. some of the skin area is dry and some of the area is oily. Usually it follows the pattern of “T” i.e. the greasy part is usually the portion which is vertical to nose crossing nose (nose, mouth and chin) and horizontal on fore head and hence referred to as “T-Zone”. The area left i.e. cheeks is comparatively dry.

Pressure Points to End a Fight

Have you ever dreamt of being such a master of martial arts that you could press one spot on your attacker and instantly end the fight? Are these techniques possible? How could you really use pressure points in a self-defense encounter?

Pressure Point Fighting Fantasies

While there is lot of truth to nerve-pressure control, because of television and movies, there is a lot of fantasy. If you aren’t already a martial-arts master, you probably won’t be able to use nerve strikes to just walk right up to the flailing attacker and paralyze him with one touch.

Don’t count on Spock’s Vulcan nerve pinch to have your attacker instantly slump over into la-la land. Vulcans may be able to induce instant fainting in Star Trek, but you can’t.

Neither will you be able to paralyze someone in pain with one press of the thumb, like Remo Williams in The Destroyer series.

And even if you could press one spot and paralyze, you’d still have to be proficient enough in the arts, to be able to dodge punches and kicks, avoid being grappled to the ground, and so on, just to get in close enough to strike.

Not an easy task.

Nerve Strike Targets

Since it will take too high of a level of mastery to be able to find useful pressure points “to press,” you probably should try to use them as an initial control in an all out fight.

By themselves, they won’t serve you the way you want them to.

Instead, think of nerve points as targets. If you strike near a nerve center, you can cause a lot of pain — maybe even enough to end the fight.

Warning: Certain nerve strikes, like a temple hit can cause death. You could be held liable. Know your nerve strikes inside and out, and their consequences, before you start incorporating them into your repertoire.

For example, you’d think that the pressure points around and in the arm pit wouldn’t be sensitive enough to end a fight. Once, during martial arts practice, I accidentally hit my opponent in the fleshy skin, where there are glands, just in front of the arm pit. It was a medium strike with my knuckle.

And it ended the practice session for this guy. I didn’t mean to, at all — but accidents happen during sparring. He gave me credit and said it was a good pop. The next day, he claimed he still felt sore.

The Best Way to Use a Pressure Point to End a Fight

Other than striking a nerve center on the body, pressure points are excellent at the end of the encounter. (Finally, you get to cause pain by “pressing.”)

Imagine someone attacking you. You can’t get away. So, you have to hit and/or kick. You hit until you get control with a wrist lock. If your attacker is still struggling as you apply a joint lock, then you can use pressure points to assist.

Pressure points are excellent to:

  • distract while regaining control of a lock
  • stop resistance
  • direct your captive to calm down
  • lead your opponent to a more controlled position
  • dissuade your attacker from trying to hit or kick further

Pressure points are excellent to help bring the fight to a conclusion.

What is libido?

Libido or low sex drive in women is also known as HSDD or hypoactive sexual desire disorder. It is a deficiency or absence of sexual fantasies and the desire for sexual activity, as defined by APA or American Psychiatric Association.

It is a malignant cancer of the cervix uteri, the lower part of the uterus or womb, or cervical area. The uterus is a hollow, pear-shaped organ in the lower abdomes and is connected by the cervix to the vagina.

A passageway where blood flows from the uterus through the canal into the vagina during menstrual period is known as cervical anal.

Women with high risk factor of contracting cervix cancer are:

The type of treatment is dependent on the stage of the disease, the age group and the tumour type. Treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or both.

Treatment for Early Stage- Either radiation/chemoradiation or surgery

Treatment for Advance Stages – Systemic chemotherapy or chemoradiation

Do you know that surgery will include the removal of the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, vaginal cuff and pelvic lymph nodes? High-energy rays are used in radiation to kill cancer cells.

There are two types of radiation – External Radiation and Internal Radiation or Intracavitary radiation.

Internal Radiation or also known as Intracavitary Radiation, implants containing radioactive material substance are left in the vagina for a few hours.

Cervical cancer and low female libido – How are they connected?

Any woman who has cervix cancer will definitely experience stress, fatigue, emotional effects and general poor health. These issues will generally affect a woman’s sex drive and desire.

Cervix cancer patient may feel nervous about having sex after treatment. They will be wondering if it is safe to have sex. Just remember that having sex with your partner even though you are suffering from cervix cancer will not make the cancer comeback. Nor will it make your partner catch the cancer from you.

Most women will need to take more time over sex the help their vagina relax. Relax and enjoy your intimacy with your partner. Start gently and slowly the vagina will become supple again and you can experience usual sex life after a few weeks.

It also helps if you and your partner discuss things. Talk it over. Share your fear, concerns and apprehension. Make your partner understand what you are going through. You will be surprised that by explaining you make your partner understand you and the situation better. Suddenly you will realize that you are not alone.

A woman’s emotion can be affected during this time. This is normal. There is no wrong or right way to handle such a situation. Two way communication with your sex partner do really help. The faster you come to terms with your situation the better and more calm your life will be and the faster you will start to more forward with your life.

Any cervical cancer patient will experience low persistent sex drive and will definitely experience personal and emotional distress. Some of the signs are:

  • Psychological
  • Physiological

  • Genital pain with or without sexual contact
  • Lack of sexual interest
  • History of abuse
  • Pelvic surgery eg hysterectomy, pregnancy, straddle injuries
  • Medications
  • Hormonal problems
  • Blood flow problems

Whatever the situation is, low libido should never impede your sex drive and desire. Many of the above effects can be eased by hormone creams, skin patches, tables, or libido enhancer.

If vaginal dryness is a problem, get your doctor to prescribe creams or you can get lubricating gels. If low libido is a problem, female libido enhancer liquid or creams are available which you and your partner can apply directly to the vagina before or during sex.

8 Tips For Healthy Feet

Not many people know that the average adult walks the equivalent of more than 4 times around the world in their lifetime! Therefore, it is hardly surprising that more than three quarters of adults will experience some form of problem with their feet during their lifetime.

It is important that we look after our feet as much as any other part of our bodies. Unfortunately, because for most of the time they remain hidden, we often neglect them and it’s not until our feet become uncomfortable that we pay them any attention.

To keep problem feet at bay, follow these top tips and transform your feet into loveable tootsies that you can be proud of!

  1. Wash feet daily. Use mild, soapy water for just a few minutes. Soaking them for longer can upset the balance of natural oils in your skin. Dry your feet properly with a soft towel, of course paying careful attention to the spaces between the toes.

  2. File hard skin away gently using a foot file or a pumice stone. For best results, use a pumice stone in, or straight after a bath or shower while the skin is still soft. Follow this with a foot file when your feet are dry. For a really smooth and polished feel, apply moisturising cream.

  3. Apply moisturising cream to your feet daily, more often if they are really dry. Use a good quality moisturising cream and rub into the feet, paying particular attention to the sole and heel areas while avoiding the toenails and spaces between the toes. You can get specialist foot creams from your chiropodist/podiatrist or pharmacy.

  4. Keep the spaces between the toes fresh and dry with a little surgical spirit. Use a cotton bud soaked with surgical spirit and apply the bud between the toes. Do this daily to prevent any sogginess or athlete’s foot.

  5. Keep nails trimmed. Use proper nail scissors or clippers and follow the natural curve of the end of the nail. Leave a free edge of nail at the tip, approximately 2-3 mm (0.25 inch). Do not cut or dig into the sides of the nail as this can lead to ingrown toenail.

  6. Avoid going barefoot in public places such as swimming pools and gym changing rooms. Wearing flip flops can reduce the risk of picking up infections such as verrucae and athlete’s foot.

  7. Make sure you are wearing the right shoes for you! Poor footwear is often the cause of many foot problems, some of them severe, yet few of us even realize we are wearing the wrong shoes.

  8. See a chiropodist or podiatrist if you have any concerns about your feet, a podiatrist can identify any problems and discuss the best treatment options with you. Even if you do not have a specific foot problem, it may be a good idea to visit a podiatrist once in a while to identify any problems you may have early and to advise you on the best ways to care for your feet.
