There Are Several Alternative Treatments Available To Treat Nail Fungus

There are several alternative treatments that have been proven effective against toenail fungus infections. The advantage of using alternative treatments is that they do not have the unpleasant side effects that are often associated with prescription medications. Some of the oral prescription medications for nail fungus can be toxic, especially to the liver.

Essential oils like tea tree oil and oregano oil are often used as topical alternative treatments. These oils have a deep penetrating power that aid in the destruction of nail fungus. Oil of oregano can be rubbed liberally into the nail bed several times a day.

Some people use home remedies like vinegar or Vapor Rub because they provide relief from symptoms and also help cure nail infections. Both vinegar and Vapor Rub can be used topically several times a day.

Many alternative medicine practitioners believe that a natural diet that is free from preservatives is the best way to ensure health and help prevent fungal infections from occurring. A qualified holistic dietician can help you decide the diet plan that is best for you. Almost all dieticians will recommend that you reduce the amount of sugar in your diet in order to prevent and treat fungal and yeast infections.

Some alternative medicine advocates believe that our bodies should undergo detoxification tour times a year to prevent infections from recycling. As alternative health practices grow in popularity, more and more people are turning to detoxification to help restore balance and well being in their bodies. After detoxification, most people find that they have decreed dependencies on habit forming substances such as sugar, caffeine, alcohol and drugs.

Herbs are included in many of the alternative treatments used for nail fungus. Because herbs have gained such popularity in recent years, some people have asked their medical doctors to include herbs in their treatment plans. While not all conventional doctors are familiar with the benefits of herbal medicine, they should be able to refer patients to an herb specialist or investigate medical literature on their behalf.

Leucatin is an all-natural way to cure nail fungus. This product is available both in oral and topical applications. For best results, you should you both types so that you can cure your fungal infection from the inside out.

Your local health food store can provide you with more information about alternative treatments for toenail fungus infections. You will be surprised at the number of alternative treatments that are available to treat nail fungus infections.

'Tis The Season

I was listening to one of my favorite radio talk programs today. The topic of the hour was "do you feel burdened by Christmas?" Much to my amazement the host, and the majority of his guests, spent the better part of an hour whining and moaning about the burdensome nature of the holiday season. "I hate being with my relatives." "Why do I have to spend all this money on presents for people I do not like?" "There's too much pressure!" "The traffic in the stores is ridiculous." It went on and on and on!

It's a well known fact that people tend to be more depressed during the holiday season. It can be disturbing if you live far away from your family. Some people actually become depressed because of the decrease in their exposure to sunlight during the winter months. However, what I heard today was different. People were just whining! They sounded like young children who were being forced to do their chores. Then, it hit me. Those people were suffering from PHLOP!

What is PHLOP (pronounced "flop")? Pre-Holiday Lack of Planning! It is my own term for describing what causes successful people turn into grinches during the holiday season. Anyone who suffers from PHLOP will experience a range of symptoms that include: anxiety, sleeplessness, irritability, overeating (particularly of chocolate), anger, and irrationality. All of these symptoms cause them to miss out on the true joy that should be experienced during the holiday season.

People who suffer from PHLOP get their first dose of anxiety when they begin to consider the massive list of things to do between Thanksgiving and the end of the year. There are cards to be sent, gifts to be bought and wrapped, parties to be planned, activities to be enjoyed, and thank you notes to be written. It's enough to give a person indigestion! Then, add all of the subtasks (eg, everything that is involved in planning a party) to the list. By then, that person has a major case of indigestion and the beginning symptoms of a migraine. Of course, the only reason that the person experiences anxiety is because he or she is not organized.

Do you suffer from PHLOP? It's not too late to change things – even for this holiday season! Consider the consequences of not planning out how you will get everything done before January 31. Your tasks will get done at the last minute. They will not be done well. Worst of all, you may not finish them at all! Let's face it, there is nothing worse than looking at a stack of holidays cards that were signed, sealed, and addressed, but just did not make it to the post office. If you would like some help organizing your holiday schedule for this and future Christmas seasons, you should get a copy UnCommon Courtesy & Coaching's PHLOP busting holiday organizer by visiting our Christmas Corner at: .

Let me also take a moment to suggest some things that will help you to enjoy this holiday season. First, consider making some of your gifts. People generally think about making gifts only when they are very young, super organized, or short on cash. You need not begin crocheting purses for your friends in August in order to make presentations. Think about baking a few batches of bar cookies and then dividing them up onto colorful Christmas plates. Wrap them in cellophane and tie them with colorful ribbon. It's easy, cheap, and all your friends will love it. After all, have you ever had anyone tell you that they did not like a plate full of cookies? How about buying a number of inexpensive items and putting them in a basket. The presentation will impress the heck out of the recipient. Whatever you decide to make, constructing the gift yourself will make it more meaningful to both you and the person who receives it.

Another suggestion to make your holiday bright and joyous is to act like a kid. Often people will suggest that you view the holidays "through the eyes of a child." To that I say: "You are missing half of the fun." Yes, it is a good idea to view things as if you were a child, but remember that actions are just as important as thoughts. For example, consider all those holiday television shows and videos you loved to watch as a child. Somehow, you have not found the time to watch them for years. Well, this is the year to start that tradition once again. If you can, watch them with a child. However, it does not matter if a child is watching the program with you. The important thing is to remember to be child-like. How will you ensure that you take on a juvenile persona for the evening? Stock up on all those fun things that a child likes to have available while watching a video. For example, you should dress in your most comfortable pajamas, grab a cup of cocoa, and fill up a bowl with popcorn. Then, settle into your most comfortable chair with all the goodies and enjoy watching Snoopy decorate his dog house. Now, apply that same principle to all of your holiday related activities. It's all those little extras that will really add joy to the Christmas season.

I realize that there may be some readers who feel that they should have begun their holiday planning and organization months ago. To those people I say: "Now is the time to be industrious!" For example, shopping that has been delayed to the last minute can be remedied in several ways. Try going to the mall at the very beginning or end of the shopping day. Consider purchasing an unusual gift that can be found somewhere other than a mall. For goodness sake, do your shopping online! No matter how chaotic and stressful it looks, this holiday season should serve as a life lesson. Make notes for yourself about what went well, what could have been better, and what was an absolute disaster. Then, form an action plan for next year. It's never too soon to get organized!

The bottom line is: this is the season to be jolly, make merry, and recall the joy that can fill your life. The holiday season is the time to be child-like. It is a time to overlook life's little irritations and be grateful for all the wonderful aspects of what has been given to you. I wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy New Year, and a joyous time no matter what holiday you will be celebrating in the upcoming weeks!

Latest Toenail Fungus Treatment – Find Foot Fungus Symptoms

Toenail fungus is a ugly looking bacterial skin condition challenging the medical professionals all over the nations. According to a statistics survey, there are approximately twenty-five million patients in America alone having toenail infection. Even though it’s not awful and life threatening, the enlarging number of folks developing this infection is causing worries to the medical bodies. The laser rays have ultra power to kill the bacterial fungus without damaging the healthy tissues and cells in the toe. Personal corporations are encouraged to find out new strategies and means to get rid of toenail fungus.

Why Is Proper Breathing Important When Facing Breathing Pain – Learn the Facts

Proper breathing is very important in times of great anxiety, panic attacks and depression. In these moments many people result to chest breathing-the big desperate inhales and exhales leading to puff ups and deflated chests.

However in these times it is advisable to lie on the floor and place one's hands on the chest. The hands should be used as a measure of reducing the chest movement to such a time when one will breathe normally. The chest is not the one that is supposedly to breathe because it should not be moving. The diaphragm has been designed to control the breathing system not the chest.

The chest has its purpose in times of breathing but not at these times. This exercise helps control the amount of oxygen getting into the body and the amount is used by the body. It is a very dangerous exercise to overload one's body with too much oxygen as it is not needed in the body since temperature with the oxygen to carbon dioxide ratio.

What is needed at times of anxiety most importantly is a relaxed state of mind and this can not be achieved when one is breathing heavily. Heavy breathing leads to the brain sending a signal to lower heart beat rate hence lower blood supply.

The key to good breathing is relaxation and this is what is needed when one has just had an anxiety. The above exercise is very much recommended for it doe not strain the body muscles. Anxiety is a very dangerous and in some cases if not properly managed can lead to panic attacks which is more expensive and demanding to control. Maintain good breathing techniques helps curb much bigger and un thought of problems in one's health.

Does Your New ADHD Medication Have Side Effects?

Are you the parent of a child who suffers from ADHD? If so, then you understand the frustration of never seeming to be able to get your child’s illness under control. You also understand the pain that comes with having to watch your child suffer from something that he or she has no power over.

You believe that if anyone, you and their doctor should be able to control the symptoms of this illness with new ADHD medication, right? Like most people, your belief is part of the “hope” of finding a safe and real treatment.

One new ADHD medication used to combat the symptoms of this illness is Strattera. This medication is highly preferred because of it’s non-stimulating effects. If you are trying this medication, chances are that you have also been bouncing from prescription to prescription just hoping that something you try is going to help your child.

Even some of the new meds for ADHD contain the same side effects as the older medications. Strattera also contains side effects that consist of a heightened chance of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in both children and adults. This is not something that we want to think about happening to our children.

The FDA warns that this medication has been known to worsen the already hyperactive and depressing symptoms often observed in children with ADHD. It also warns that worsening irritability and mood changes may occur. Another new ADHD medication you may have previously tried is Concerta. What you may find is that side effects in all new meds for ADHD are each strikingly similar.

Concerta’s side effects consist of headaches, tics, nervousness, rapid heartbeat, mental mood changes, irritability, and verbal tics. What you experienced with one prescription medication, you are likely going to experience over and over until you find a legitimate treatment.

A third new ADHD medication is called Daytrana. This form of treatment comes in patch form, and also contains side effects. The side effects include aggression, agitation, seizures, moodiness, and an overall worsening of symptoms. Again, this should not be a part of the treatment process and I am sure that most of you would agree. People want something that they do not have to be scared to death to use. They want to use a medication that works, and does not offer them so many threats.

Honestly, is taking a prescription medication worth the risk? A lot of people are beginning to wonder if there really is any hope at all in new meds for ADHD. If you do your research, what you will find is that even the new medications are really no different from those in previous days. They are still just as dangerous.

No matter how hard the inventors of these drugs try to make them safe, they will fail every single time because they are not natural. We cannot change the way our body handles medication. Rejecting unnatural treatments is the body’s way of dealing with harmful chemicals, so it is only normal to have a negative reaction.

The only real way to deal with ADHD is to use natural forms of treatment. Natural remedies are one effective way of doing this. Passion Flower, St. John’s Wort, fish oil, green tea extract, and 5-HTP are just a few of the natural remedies that many are opting to use. There is more selection with natural ADHD remedies and a much lower risk of side effects. Instead of treating your child with a new ADHD medication, you can choose to treat and to finally cure it with natural remedies.

Why I Love Blogging

People blog for many reasons. Originally, I started my blog the end of 2013 as an author platform.

But as time passed, I realized my blog provided much more than an author platform and it wasn’t all about the numbers. Blogging served a different and more profound purpose. I would even say that it’s changed the way I look at and live my life.

That’s why if you’re thinking about starting a blog, I’d highly recommend it. That is, if you’re blogging for the right reasons.

If you’re starting a blog to get rich or even to eke out a living, well, don’t count on it. Monetizing a blog is super hard these days. In fact, after three years, I’m still not making money from my blog. By the way, don’t believe all the hype from people selling online courses that try to convince you blogging is a great way to make passive income. Make no mistake, writing and promoting a blog is a ton of work. There is nothing passive about it.

In fact, it’s so easy to get frustrated when you first start a blog. As a technically-challenged person, I had to learn WordPress. Then, I spent a lot of time promoting my blog and trying to find an audience. Something else I knew little about. As with most bloggers, I quickly became obsessed – and depressed – with the numbers and how many visitors, subscribers, and Facebook followers I had on any given day. Turns out building up readership for a blog takes a LOT of time, effort, and patience.

So Why Blog?

Some people may disagree with me, but I think blogging shouldn’t just be about making money, drumming up business, gathering a huge following, chasing fame, or trying to sell books.

Blogging can serve as a creative channel to voice ideas, thoughts, opinions, beliefs, and feelings. On top of that, writing a blog provides a wonderful opportunity to inspire and touch the lives of other people in a positive way.

How Blogging Changed My Life

My blog has certainly seen me through many ups and downs these past few years. I’ve written about joyful moments like a trip to Chicago with my husband to celebrate our anniversary, a day spent playing in the snow with my grandchildren, watching Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones at Desert Trip, and a quick weekend trip with my kids to San Francisco.

I’ve also poured my heart out while caregiving for my Mom who suffered from Lewy Body dementia and wrote about her eventual death. I shared my angst when my mother-in-law died from ovarian cancer and my son went through a painful divorce and custody battle that same year. (Ironically, shortly after I started writing a blog about happiness, I had the worst year of my life.)

Yes, I love reading, which provides a welcome respite from my troubles, but writing is my real escape, outlet, and passion. When I write, I become so focused, my problems fade away for awhile, giving me a much needed break. In fact, if you’re truly a writer, believe me, it is a life-long addiction!

The process of putting my thoughts and feelings into writing has brought me comfort as well as help me relive happy moments.writer

As I’ve written about my life, my blog helped me think about what’s important to me and determine if my life is headed in the right direction.

Since I can’t write about every event, idea, thought, and feeling, blogging provides a sort of filter, clarifying my life. My blogs have helped me understand what is most meaningful to me. I’ve discovered along the way that sometimes it’s the simplest moments that make me the happiest.

Embracing Creativity

As a professional writer, my blog gives me wonderful creative freedom to express myself. Not to pop anyone’s balloon, but writing sounds more glamorous than it is in reality. For most of the past 25 years, I’ve written articles on subjects that magazines, newspapers, publishers, and clients choose for me.

True, I’ve written two young adult books, travel articles, humorous pieces, and feature stories on fascinating people that were fun. On the other hand, in order to make a living, I’ve also written articles that bored me to tears. I’ve tackled technical articles – and one technical book – that gave me an Excedrin headache and drove me nuts. I’ve written on demand, meeting other people’s deadlines, writing late into the night as my brain is desperately trying to call it quits.

Don’t get me wrong. I may sound whiny, but I fully realize that I’m darn lucky to have made a living at something I love. I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

The point is, my blog is my baby. I write on subjects I’m interested in and feel passionate about and hope my audience will enjoy as well. My blog allows me to stretch as a writer, explore, experiment, and try new things whenever the muse hits. Writing professionally has given me the discipline to publish a blog every week, but I write my blogs when I choose. And believe me, that’s not at the crack of dawn or 10:00 at night! That is luxurious.

So, those are some of the ways blogging has changed my life. But, as I mentioned earlier, the huge bonus is that blogging can change other people’s lives as well.

Some people have left comments letting me know that I have in some small way inspired them or provided useful information and that always brings me such joy. Writing a blog has provided an opportunity to connect with readers and other bloggers, which has been so rewarding.

What kind of blogs have proven to be most popular? It’s always interesting to see what resonates and hits home. My top ten blogs in order of popularity:

1. Five Ways to Become a Happy-Go-Lucky Person

Every year, this is my top-performing blog by far. Merriam-Webster defines happy-go-lucky as blithely unconcerned and carefree. Synonyms include affable, laid-back, low-pressure, and mellow. I guess we all want some of that!

2. Golden Boys in Concert: Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon, and Fabian

I was asked to do a book review of Bobby Rydell’s autobiography. This led to an interview, free tickets to his Golden Boys concert with Frankie Avalon and Fabian, and a backstage pass to meet Rydell in person. This was a nice perk that came from blogging! The day they posted my concert review on Rydell’s Facebook page, my visitors increased by 3000% for the day. No joke!

3. Keep Laughing with the Seven Dwarfs of Menopause

This blog has held a top-three spot since I began blogging. Hey, it’s either laugh or cry through menopause, and wouldn’t we all prefer to laugh?

4. Staying Positive Despite Problems

Everyone has problems that make us feel powerless and defeated, so I’m not surprised this blog made the top ten. I offer three simple tips on how we can control our outlook and still choose to be happy despite our troubles.

5. What Are Your Life’s Happiest Moments?

If you look back on your life, which moments would you count as your happiest? What would be your biggest regrets? That’s the question one study asked participants aged 70 and older. I share the results of their insightful answers in this blog.

6. Why Older People Are Happier Than Baby Boomers

Aww, my very first blog that got my blog off the ground. The idea for this blog was based on studies that show, in general, older people – and even the younger generation – are happier than us baby boomers. One study confirmed there is a U-shaped happiness curve with the early 50’s as the lowest point of well-being.

7. Happy as Easy as 1-2-3

“I want my day to feel like there is boundless beauty and possibilities and joy to be felt, discovered, explored, and expressed. And you know what? I can and so can you,” I wrote. This article got discovered on Stumble Upon, bringing me my second (after the Rydell concert review) all-time record high number of visitors for one day.

8. Staying Happy Through Menopause

I wrote this article after Hot Flash Daily hired me to write humorous articles about menopause to launch their new website. I had never written humor before, but had a blast doing it for them! I happily shared it all – the scorching hot flashes, insane insomnia, annoying forgetfulness, and crazy panic attacks that ensued for years. Yes, YEARS!

9. Finding Happiness with Grandchildren

This blog was an easy one to write. To be needed and wanted by these delightful little beings is a wonderful treat and privilege. Like many people, I find that the rewards of family life only grew richer and more fulfilling as each new grandchild was born.

10. Five Happy Snoopy Quotes

Okay, this one surprised me a little bit. But hey, don’t we all still love Snoopy? Now that I write a happiness blog, I’m impressed with how much wisdom Charles M. Schultz cartoons contain on the subject.

I loved writing all these articles that proved to be popular with readers. With that in my mind, what’s my basic advice to all of you who are thinking about blogging? Write about your passions. Let your blog teach you life lessons. And, finally, enjoy the process. Then you can love blogging as much as I do!

How to Survive Depression

Depression  is a very common but serious disorder  that affects people of every color, race, economic status or age.  Being depressed means to be deeply sad, hopeless, unmotivated for a long period of time. There is not clear cause of depression. It happens because of a combination of factors such as genes, brain chemistry and structure,  environmental and psychological factors.  In most cases depression starts between the ages of 15 and 30 and much more common in women then in men. It is resulted from the birth of a baby, loss of a loved one, stress and hormonal changes, or it can be simply a seasonal affective disorder . The signs and symptoms can be different  in men, woman, young children and older  adults, but the most typical symptoms include:

–           Depressed mood or sadness

–          Lack of energy

–          Irritability, anger or anxiety

–          Significant weight loss or gain

–          Thoughts of death or suicide

–          Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping

–          Low self-esteem

–          Loss of interest or pleasure

Depression interferes with  daily life and routine, making it unbearable. It makes pain for the person who suffers from the disorder and for those who care about him or her. That’s why  it is very important to recognize the early signs and get rid of depression to prevent its coming back. Depression cannot go away on its own, it should be treated. Even in severe cases , depression can be cured by means of talk therapy, medication or a combination of both.  Here are some useful tips on how to win your war against this illness.

  1. Set small and realistic goals to achieve
  2. Find time for hobbies
  3. Don’t  make  quick decisions
  4. Refuse from alcohol
  5. Do sport
  6. Think positive

As it was mentioned above, there are a number of methods to treat depression.  Usually people chose for medication or psychotherapy.  Antidepressants are the most common medicines which help to  stabilize your mood, but at the same time they might cause some side-effects such as headache, insomnia, sexual problems.  Therefore in case of mild of moderate depression,  it is better to use psychotherapy .  When both medication or psychotherapy doesn’t help,  electroconvulsive therapy can be taken as  an alternative, however it also may cause short-term side effects.

One more way to copy with depression is to join a support group and get help of people, who also suffer from the disorder.  But anyway, the first step to getting appropriate treatment is to visit a doctor, who can make a diagnosis and find the right method of treatment.

Commonly Known and Lesser Known Hypothyroid Symptoms

When hypothyroidism begins, several things happen, usually gradually. The first is lack of energy and ambition. You just seem to lose desire for activities you’ve enjoyed in the past. You feel unusually tired and apathetic, but can’t figure out why. You begin to crave carbs and begin to snack regularly. This is your body’s way of trying to stay awake. You’ll try not to give into it, and when you can’t fight the cravings, you set yourself up for horrible eating habits and weight gain that are difficult to reverse. You might already be taking some thyroid supplements, but they’re obviously not enough. Warning: if you are taking prescribed thyroid medication for underactive thyroid, do not add kelp as it will raise your blood pressure to frightening and dangerous levels. I learned this the hard way.

I have been a hypothyroid sufferer for 30 years. I was originally diagnosed by an old-fashioned European doctor. He was a gem. Then I had to switch to a modern, young South African doctor with a large and fragile ego, who knew nothing about thyroid glands but based everything on blood tests, which he didn’t really understand. As a person with hypothyroidism, it is hard to get any respect from the medical community. General practitioners and endocrinologists alike seem to know and care little about people suffering from hypothyroidism. Their “gold standard” is the TSH test, and most of them use the old standards of readings between .6 and 6 instead of the new readings of .3 and 3 that the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists adopted in 2003. These new readings allow more people (it’s mostly women, particularly those who are middle-aged, who suffer from hypothyroidism) to be diagnosed and treated. Too bad the professionals that we trust to look after our health don’t seem to know or care that the standards have changed. Endocrinologists, by and large, specialize in diabetes. This is where their primary interest seems to lie. The first endocrinologist I was referred to told me that she doubted I’d ever been hypothyroid and that my thyroid gland was habituated to being overstimulated. She was so wrong! Then I was referred to another endocrinologist who misdiagnosed my thyroid virus for Grave’s Disease (overactive thyroid.) The medication she prescribed raised my TSH to about 22. When I stopped taking that medication, my TSH dropped to 4.7. She told me my 4.7 TSH reading was now normal. It clearly wasn’t normal for me because I still had hypothyroid symptoms. Consider that normal or average clothing sizes could be between 6 and 14, and that you fall into this category. How many of these sizes will fit? If a size 10 fits you, why would you wear a size 14? TSH is much like that. You have to find the number that fits YOU. When you have been told for the nth time that your TSH is in the normal range, read these symptoms, most of which are commonly known, but some of which aren’t.

1. Fatigue. This is not the same as tired. This refers to falling asleep at work, during conversations, as soon as you get into a vehicle. You can’t stay awake. You need at least 10 hours sleep at night, but within a couple of hours of waking up, you begin to battle to stay awake. You nod off during conversations, which you can’t focus on anyway. You avoid socializing in the evening because you can’t stay awake.

2. Sluggishness. You move slowly physically, but even your brain is slow. Your thought processes don’t work properly.

3. Increased sensitivity to cold. Summer’s not too bad, but in the winter, there is no way to get warm or stay warm. You wear extra layers and surround yourself with space heaters. It helps, but you’re still cold.

4. Constipation. You drink lots of water and eat next to nothing, but your body processes everything slowly. Constipation follows.

5. Pale, dry skin. Skin color is pasty-looking, and skin is always dry, no matter what kind of lotion you use. My heels were so rough that every day they chewed through my socks even though I filed the roughness away daily and used foot balm.

6. A puffy face.

7. Hoarse voice. Your voice takes on a gravel-like quality at times.

8. Elevated cholesterol level.

9. Weight gain that makes no sense. You’re too tired to eat, but gain weight anyway.

10. Muscle aches, tenderness and stiffness. Flexibility and mobility are gone. You move like a lead weight. If you crouch or kneel, you can hardly get up again, and it hurts to crouch or kneel anyway. Even bending down is difficult and painful, for instance, trying to reach for something you dropped under a desk.

11. Pain, stiffness or swelling in your joints. Or all of them. Any sprain you’ve had begins to hurt again. Hips, fingers, ankles ache and don’t bend properly and contribute to your moving like a lead weight.

12. Muscle weakness. You can barely walk. Walking is slow and tiring. When I brushed my teeth, I had to put my arm down and rest at least 2 to 3 times to finish brushing my teeth. You fall into chairs as opposed to sitting down, and it’s a struggle to get back into a standing position from sitting. Getting out of a car is difficult, and getting into a pickup truck a little higher off the ground is equally difficult.

13. Heavier than normal menstrual periods. By now I don’t have those any more, but when I did, I all but hemorrhaged for at least four days out of the seven or eight that my period lasted. I had to put plastic on my mattress because I would wake up during the night having bled through and past the tampon, and leave a blood trail down the hall to the bathroom. Wasn’t fun.

14. Brittle fingernails and hair. Hair is dry, brittle and unhealthy looking. Nails can’t be grown long without breaking.

15. Depression. No need to elaborate.

16. Muscle cramps. You develop cramps in muscles from head to foot. Fingers, forearms, back, abdomen, legs. These cramps happen numerous times during the day and for no logical reason. My arms, hands and fingers cramped up when I cut up meat to eat.

17. Hair loss. It’s not just the hair on your head, although that thins out a lot. It also affects pubic hair and underarm hair. That can all but vanish. Eyebrows also fall out, particularly the outside corners.

18. Sinus infections. You have recurring sinus infections even though you have never had a history of sinus problems.

19. Snoring. You begin to snore even though you’ve never had a snoring problem in the past.

20. Craving for carbohydrates. You begin to crave chips, chocolate, candy, baked goods and anything with sugar. Your body is trying to stay awake and carbohydrates provide quick energy. Doesn’t help with keeping the weight down either.

21. Irritability. Little things set you off and enrage you. Everything becomes personal and you get angry enough to want to physically harm the offender.

22. Edema. You retain water. You look puffy and blubbery, particularly in the abdominal area. Makes you short of breath when you exert yourself – even going for a walk can leave you breathless.

23. Forgetfulness. You become sharp as a bowling ball. You try to commit something to memory, but your brain is a sieve.

24. Slow heart rate. Your resting pulse can drop below 60 beats per minute.

25. Low body temperature. My temperature was consistently between 35.8 to 36.2 C, which also explains why you feel cold.

26. Painful intercourse. Having sex hurts, and add to that, you wind up with muscle cramps from the waist down.

27. Light sensitivity. Your eyes can become unusually sensitive to sunlight.

My advice? Shop around for a doctor who is willing to learn together with you about thyroid problems. General Practitioners are generally more reasonable to deal with because they have no learned bias where thyroid is concerned. My GP told me the 4.7 was too high and told me to take 50 mcg of thyroid supplement. I took 100 mcg. My TSH dropped to 1.9. She was happy with that but I wasn’t. I still didn’t feel right, and remember that only YOU know how you should feel. Remember what I said about the clothing sizes? I took another 25 mcg and the TSH dropped to .5. She used the standard of .4 to 4, so she was still happy and I was too. I finally felt normal again. Don’t let doctors bully you into believing that diet, exercise and/or antidepressants will cure what ails you when you know that isn’t the problem. Shop around for a doctor who will listen to you and work with you. Google “Mary Shomon”. She is a great source of good and useful information and advice on thyroid issues. There is hope and there is help. It’s just a matter of finding them.

How to Prevent and Treat Common Sports Injuries

While there are countless benefits to participating in the many sports which are popular in the Northwest, chiropractors and physical massage therapy providers can offer help to avoid the injuries that can come with these activities.

This article focuses on three of the most popular activities while looking at the benefits of physical massage therapy and chiropractic treatments for sports injury treatment.

Bicycling injuries:

Though it’s a low-impact sport, the repetitive motion of cycling comes with its own set of potential problems.

Plantar Fasciitis manifests as pain in the heel. This can be worsened by the fact that specialized cycling shoes often lack arch support. You can help prevent it by doing stretches, such as wrapping a cord around the ball of your foot and pulling back. This will stretch the arch and help minimize damage.

Chondromalacia is caused by deterioration of the underside of the kneecap, and causes a dull pain in that area. Exercises that involve straightening of the leg can help prevent this.

Cyclists can benefit from physical massage therapy for sports injury treatment. Cycling requires the legs to work constantly, yet leaves a large area of the back stiff. The strengthening of muscles used for cycling can lead to a buildup of excess lactic acid in the legs. Physical massage therapy can release this lactic acid, and help the balance between the upper and lower body. This promotes healing of cycling-related wear and tear.

Running injuries:

Running is a great way to get – and stay – in shape. Like all physical activity, however, injuries can arise from it.

Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome, or “shinsplints” manifests as pain on the inside of the lower legs. Strengthening the calf muscles can prevent this from happening.

Achilles Tendonitis is pain near the heel, in the lower calf. This can be avoided by stretching and strengthening the calf muscles.

Patellar Tendonitis causes the area between the shin and kneecap to become tender. You can help prevent this by doing squat exercises.

Physical massage therapy is helpful to runners, as it loosens tight muscles caused by running. It also raises oxygen levels in the blood. These factors help the body heal more quickly and perform better.

Urban sports league injuries:

Urban sports leagues are only gaining in popularity in the Northwest. Chiropractors, physical therapists and massage therapy providers see a great deal of patients who participate in adult sports such as soccer, rugby, rowing and even roller derby.

Here are a few injuries which are common to these popular sports:

Lower back pain is commonly associated with rowing. While a definitive link may not have yet been proven, this is one of the most common complaints of rowers. This pain can be relieved by chiropractic treatments.

Groin strain happens often to soccer players. Stretching and strengthening your core muscles, adductor muscles and the muscles around the pelvis can help prevent this injury.

Bruises and scrapes are so common in roller derby that they are often considered part of the sport. While they may be nearly unavoidable, a healthy diet and applying arnica cream and ice can reduce their severity and duration.

Regardless of the sport, there are safe, natural sources available for sports injury treatment wherever you live. Chiropractors and physical massage therapy providers can ensure that your body stays flexible and in alignment to help avoid injuries and recover more quickly from them when they do happen.

My Pledge: Quitting Smoking Before Entering the New Year 2007

E verybody makes New Year resolutions because they wish to make things better for themselves. But within a week or two, motivation goes down and so the resolution ends up in the drain. Most of the resolutions which fail severely each year are the ones made for weight loss and quit smoking. In fact, I have been trying to quit smoke from last three years. But till date has been unsuccessful in achieving it, in my eyes it is the toughest resolution, because within a week, I start feeling as if I will die without nicotine. For the smokers life becomes empty without the nicotine kick.

M e and my hubby are planning to have a baby next year because it is important for me to quit smoking. It is a serious issue related with the health of my baby, and I can not take any chances, so I have decided not to make any quit smoking resolution this year, but I want to step into the New Year after quitting smoke forever. What do you say?

T his time I have a motivating factor too, my yet-to-be-born baby and my dead line is 31st December 2006. If I fail; I will drop the idea of conceiving in 2007 but the silver lining is that I can not sacrifice so much for nicotine! I WILL quit smoking this year and free myself from the claws of tobacco! I have a plan in my hand this time. I would like to share it with you and would like you to quit smoking with me. How? Let me tell you;

Step 1 You need to find out a very personal motivated factor. This is unique to every one, so I can not help you in that. My motivation is the love for my future baby. Find out yours!

Step 2 Take the blinder off and start looking at the reality. Cigarette is very harmful. Sit down in front of the computer and start browsing through quit smoking websites. I have already started doing this; It will help you start making the mental shift necessary for quitting.

Step 3 I have started jotting down my quit smoking goals in a journal. We have a way of believing what we tell ourselves over and over. Daily affirmations will plant the seeds of change in the mind, and it will not be long before actions are following the thoughts.

Step 4 Cravings are the part of your quit smoking efforts. Accept the reality and let it go. Most desires last only 3 to 5 minutes. Believe me, it would go. I have seen it going away, so I do not have problems with accepting my cravings.

Step 5 When you can not accept your desires, and you desire for the nicotine kick, you can opt for anti-smoking medication. You can consult your doctor for the same, as far as my research goes I have found that a new FDA approved pill named Chantix is very helpful in controlling cravings and makes quit smoking easier. Chantix or Champix is not required if you have strong will power, well, I have it this time!

Step 6 Rome was not built in a day. Believe in yourself and in God. If you do not believe in God, you must trust logic, which will also ask you to be patient. Almost all ex-smokers had 20 years or more of smoking under their belts before they finally quit. Give yourself the gift of time and patience. You have two months at your hand, remember 31st December! And I have given you the idea of taking Chantix, with which quit smoking becomes very easy.

T hese are my secret plan of quit smoking, I have shared it with you. I know I will be free of tobacco within this December and start planning for my baby as soon as the New Year arrives! (OMG … I am so excited !!) I wanted to do something in a way I believe I could get success, I hope you will also succeed in quit smoking. Please let me know if you are able to quit smoking using the tips. I will be elated even if a single individual is liberated from the cage of smoking menace. May God bless all the smokers with will power to quit smoking forever!

Fatal Familial Insomnia, A Death Sentence?

Sometimes we all feel down and depressed. But just realizing there are people in this world that are worse off than us always makes us count our blessings.

So next time you’re tossing and turning and wishing for sleep, tune in to this story. It’ll make you realize how lucky you are.

No matter how bad our sleeping problems cause us to feel, there are ways to overcome them. It can be as simple as reducing the stress in our lives or as complicated as needing several visits to a sleep clinic. You may have heard the saying, “Nobody ever died from lack of sleep”. However that’s simply not true…

Fatal Familial Insomnia, or FFI, is a rare genetic disease that runs in families. Those unfortunate enough to develop this disease have between seven months to three years left to live – if that’s what you can call it. There’s no relief and no cure.

Symptoms of fatal familial insomnia.

The age that FFI strikes can be as early as thirty, though between forty to sixty is more common. The first symptoms are frequent bouts of insomnia and fatigue, although these usually go unrecognised. Some sufferers experience phobias or panic attacks due to the lack of deep sleep. This is the first stage of this dreadful disease.

Fatal familial insomnia then takes it’s victims through worsening panic attacks and strange phobias. Sufferers are caught in the hinterland between sleep and wakefulness. Because the brain is deprived of sleep, hallucinations develop and bodily functions can start to break down. Sleep medications just make the symptoms worse.

From then on it’s a constant decline of both physical and mental health. The victims lose a lot of body weight and also loose the ability to communicate. In the final stage sufferers cannot speak or walk and experience incontinence. Finally they lapse into a coma and die.

Although FFI has been around for many generations, it’s only recently been recognised, previously diagnosed as mental illness. The only hope of a cure depends on gene therapy, a new therapy which has yet to prove itself.

The theory is locating a faulty gene which leads to the development of FFI and replacing it with a normal gene. Although this seems fairly cut & dried, the normal gene hasn’t yet been isolated.

In order for gene therapy to work, people who are at risk need to be tested before they reach childbearing age to avoid FFI being passed on to the next generation. A cure therefore rests on not just the identification of the genes, but the willingness of likely victims to come forward for testing.

Research marches on in the hope of finding a cure. Benefits may also involve those suffering from Creutzfeldt-Jacob (mad cow) and other similar genetic diseases.

Many thanks must go to the family members, both alive or dead, for their willingness to participate in the research into FFI to help others avoid the suffering they themselves had to experience. Their courage hopefully will lead the way to a cure in the not too distant future.

Fever Blisters

Debate on exactly how to treat fever blisters has been around for some time since the variant of the herpes simplex virus has been known for several centuries. But exactly what are fever blisters? First off Fever Blisters are more commonly known these days as Cold Sores or Oral Herpes (herpes simple virus which is a sexually transmitted disease). The most common location on the body for fever blisters is on the lips or around the mouth area.

Fever blisters are highly contagious and when in the blistering state, be sure to stay well away from anyone that does not have it or does not have it. And it is also a good idea not to share any eating utensils or food while you or the person has a outbreak.

Since there is currently no known cure for fever blisters the best prevention is absence while an outbreak is occurring. A outbreak can last from 2 to 12 days but it can be controlled.

What are the symptoms?

Some experience a tingling sensation around the mouth area. Some people experience an itching where the blister is going to appear. This is the time to react and take action. Cleaning the area and preparing it can often reduce the cold sore in its blistering stage.

What can you do?

Firstly do not scratch the blister, you can use a hot face cloth and soap to clean the area but be sure not to leave the cloth laying around. Throw it directly into the washer. Afterward you should apply some petroleum jelly or lip balm to stop the spread of the blister. Make sure it is not a stick lip balm as you will have to throw it out. Because this can keep re-infecting you.

Some common cold sore home remedies that have been used are using salt pressed on to the affected area to burn the blister. But all that does really is dries out the blister and can cause cracking plus it causes a lot of pain.

Placing a tea bag on the area, leaving it there for several minutes in hopes of having it heal the blister. You have to have the tea bag steaming hot for it to work. So to end that much extreme heat for several minutes to stop the further outbreak could be too much for you. Proceed with caution!

Using witch hazel on a cotton swab, this rings a bit but has some healing qualities. This is the same as using benzyl alcohol to clean and clear the blister. The only problem would be finding witch hazel as it is not commonly found in most pharmacies.

Over the counter medications such as Abreva for cold sores have some results but also can have some side effects. Since every person is different you should seek advice from your doctor!
