Pregnant women are more susceptible to get Thrush, a type of yeast infection either in the mouth or vagina, because their immune systems are not as protected. Thrush in pregnancy is actually pretty common because you have to give so much of yourself to your unborn baby that there is often gaps in your normally operating system. If you start to experience any Thrush symptoms then you should tell your doctor immediately. Normally you would just get prescribed some basic anti fungal medications and it would be cleared up within a couple of weeks. If you do end up getting prescribed a medication it will most likely be something for children so that the effects will not be as harsh to your unborn child.

It may sound gross, especially if the Thrush is occurring in your private area, but it really does have a surprisingly high success rate for knockout out Thrush symptoms. Hopefully wherever you try the medication or yogurt you will get your infection cleared up with a couple of weeks and it will be a thing of the past. It is hard to prevent it from coming back when you are pregnant because you have no control over what is going inside of you. White lesions (bumps) will start to appear inside of your mouth as one of the main Thrush symptoms. For vaginal yeast infections there will be a thick, white discharge, stinging when urinating and often a foul smell. Hepatitis E – The Other Waterborne Hepatitis Virus

Also known as enterically transmitted non-A non-B hepatitis has been the cause of several outbreaks and sporadic cases over a large geographical region.

The latest outbreak is currently underway in the African nation of Uganda. There have been 210 people admitted to hospitals due to this disease with 12 deaths reported.

The clinical course of hepatitis E is similar to that of hepatitis A with no chronic form of the disease. Jaundice, fever, loss of appetite and lethargy are common symptoms.

People get infected primarily through the fecal-oral route, usually through contaminated water or food. There have been several cases of hepatitis E infection in France due to eating raw figatellu, which is made with pig liver.

Transmission through blood transfusion has been documented albeit rare. Mother to baby transmission is possible.

Much like hepatitis A, the fatality rate is low with the exception of pregnant women where it can reach 20% among those infected in the third trimester. Liver failure is a frequent exit with pregnant women.

In the current outbreak in Uganda is attributed to a local cultural belief which discourages the use of latrines. The practice of defecating in river beds is common among the region of the country affected; although it is also the places where people get their drinking water and water for other domestic uses.

Hepatitis E is endemically found in countries that have adequate environmental sanitation. It is most frequently seen in Asia, Africa, Central America and the Middle East.

Laboratory diagnosis of hepatitis E is based on detecting antibodies in serum. There is no vaccine or drugs available for prevention or treatment. Any treatment available is supportive.

Discover Liver Cancer

What is Liver Cancer?

Liver cancer, also known as hepatocellular cancer (HCC), arises from hepatocytes (liver cells). HCC often develops only in liver that is severely damaged by longstanding diseases or chemicals. The liver becomes hardened and shrunken – a condition called liver cirrhosis.

The liver can also be subjected to another form of cancer, called secondary or metastatic cancer. The main cancer forms elsewhere in the body and secondary deposits are formed in the liver. A common example is colorectal cancer spreading to the liver via the bloodstream.

How common is Liver Cancer

Liver Cancer is common in South East Asia, including Singapore. This is due to the presence of chronic hepatitis B and C infection in the population. In Singapore, liver cancer is the 4th most common cancer. It is more common in males and among the Chinese population.

Risk Factors

The risk factors of HCC are similar to those for liver cirrhosis:

* Chronic infection with Hepatitis B and C viruses
* Excessive consumption of alcohol
* Aflatoxin, a poisonous substance produced by a fungus found in mouldy peanuts and grains
* Chemicals such as nitrites, hydrocarbons, solvents, vinyl chloride are known carcinogens linked to HCC
* Inherited conditions which cause liver cirrhosis, such as haemachromatosis, Wilson's disease

Signs & Symptoms

These usually do not show up until the later stages:

* One of the most common presentations is loss of appetite, loss of weight and tiredness
* When the cancer is big, the patient may note a persistent pain or a lump in his upper right abdomen
* Increase in the abdomen girth
* Jaundice
* Dramatic change in the overall condition of a person with chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis

* Vaccinate against hepatitis B virus. In Singapore, all newborns are vaccinated
* Avoid contact with known liver carcinogens, especially alcohol
* Avoid heavy meat and animal fat intake. Avoid mouldy peanuts and grains
* Go for regular screening if you are in the high risk group

There are various treatments available to sufferers of HCC. These include:

* Surgery. It involves removing one lobe of the liver (hepatectomy). This is a major operation with small risk of complications and death.

* Chemotherapy. Uses toxic drugs to kill the cancer.

* Radiation treatment. Combined with chemotherapy, it offers some benefits in inoperable HCC.

* Newer treatments. Use of cryosurgery, ethanol injection, high energy waves to destroy the HCC. Another method is the introduction of a plastic tube into the hepatic artery for the purpose of injecting substances to kill the cancer or stop its blood supply. At present, such treatment is used in the palliation of inoperable HCC.

Drug-Free Life: Natural Treatments for Kidney Disease

It is indeed unfortunated to be diagnosed with an unceasing illness of the kidney. The patient is naturally concerned to know his status, what caused the disease and the kind of treatments available. At present, many people are inclined to opt for alternative therapies, mainly to avoid pharmaceuticals treatment as they are applicable to the medicines approved by the FDA. Moreover, there is a segment of public that believes that pharmaceutical drugs are increasingly becoming ineffective in treating many diseases and cause harmful side effects. Alternative treatments are also available for treating many diseases of kidney.

The treatment and procedure is determined by the root cause of the malady. For instance, PKD or polycystic kidney will need a different treatment than what has been caused by prolonged consumption of excess volumes of alcohol or another substance abuse. Patients with diabetic issues will need to have a very strict control of their level of blood sugar for keeping away any more renal deterioration. In extreme cases, it may become necessary to remove one of the kidneys. If and when the other kidney too fails, there may not be any other option but to go for kidney transplant. The last course for kidney patients may be to undergo dialysis treatment, where a machine is employed to filter blood and send it back to the body as the kidneys are no more capable of performing this vital function.

In case of many patients, apart from the above available treatments it is possible to use natural remedies. Here are a couple of helpful alternative ways for treating chronic kidney diseases. Some of these may seem farfetched but are backed up by scientific research.

1. Lei Gong Teng: traditional Chinese doctors have been using for a long time but now researchers of allopathic medicines have realized its benefits in the treatment of polycystic kidney illness. Dr. Craig Crews from Yale University could successfully wipe out PKD cysts from mice in his lab.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar: For generations, this product has been successfully used for breaking down kidney stones. Surely, if something is known for dissolving pearls, it can be expected to split up the calculi produced by calcium in kidneys. It also enhances urine output, which helps flushing the kidneys. Apple cider vinegar has also antibacterial properties that help healing and even prevent bacterial infections.

3. Baking Soda: British researchers believe that sodium bicarbonate (the chemical name for baking soda) helps to slow down the growth of chronic kidney diseases. The explanation given is that baking soda characteristically neutralizes the acidity in blood that contributes to kidney problems.

4. Corn silk: Often, trimmings of corn web are discarded but these can be helpful in treatment of urinary and kidney infections. They also help avoiding the formation of stones and the elimination of edema, an offshoot of kidney diseases.

5. Dandelion: Although mostly considered as a weed, this ever-present plant had been playing an important role in indigenous American medicines. Boiled leaves and roots of this plant can be utilized for treating kidney diseases. They are also known to have diuretic properties that help preventing the disease.

Dog Allergy Symptoms – Prevent Dog Allergies

If you own a dog and he is starting to show some unusual behaviors such as scratching more than usual, or scratching in just one spot, then he may have some form of dog allergy symptoms. Just like humans have allergies, dogs have allergies as well. The number one reason for dog allergy symptoms is the types of food that he is eating. But another reason, is that your mutt might be allergic to something that is in the environment, or some type of biological organism or substance. It is important to understand what is causing the allergies, and be sure to treat these as soon as possible.

Since a dog has no way to inform its owner of dog allergy symptoms, it's important that you come up with a diagnosis yourself. All that he knows is that it is itching more than usual or itching the exact same spot, or that that is not feeling very well at the moment. It needs you to treat the allergies.

As said, the number one reason for dog allergy symptoms is the type of food he is eating. Just like a human, your pup needs much of the same vitamins and minerals that you do, to a certain extent. A lot of times dogs are fed scraps left over from dinner or other meals. While this is usually okay in some instances, it also may be a reason that he is experiencing allergies. You need to make sure that the food you are feeding your pup is rich in vitamins and minerals. A lot of times people will think that it is okay to take the fat from steak or the skin from the chicken and feed it to their pets. Just because it is not necessarily healthy for humans, does not mean it's healthy for dogs either.

If your dog is showing signs of allergy symptoms to the food that it is currently eating, you need to make sure to change from this type of brand of food. And the results that you experience are going to be determined completely by trial and error. Some veterinarians recommend that a dog stay away from chicken and grain products altogether, so keep this in mind when you're feeding him. You can actually purchase specifically designed food that are aimed and targeted towards preventing dog allergy symptoms.

Other common allergy symptoms is hair loss, dry skin, and digestive problems. If your dog is barking too much this could be a sign of an allergies to something. Vomiting is also a symptom that is involved with allergies. If you change the eating habits of your dog and have not identified any other problems that could have led to these dog allergy symptoms, it might be best to take your pup to a veterinarian. There might be some kind of underlining biological problem that needs to be addressed by a professional. In this case, it's as easy as getting an antibiotic.

How To Make Food For Your Geriatric Cat

This recipe is modified from the Recipe with Real Bone on

Ingredients for Geriatric Cat Food on a budget!

5 pounds of spam, tuna, or ground chuck-whichhever is cheapest

4000 mg Taurine capsules from CVS or Walgreens

200 mg of Vitamin A and D capsules

16 oz [2 cups] water

4 raw egg yolks or 2 cups of liquid eggs or yolks

4 capsules multivitamin for men

4000 mg fish oil

8 tablets of vitamin E

200 mg of B Complex vitamin

8 tbsp of kitchen salt (optional without your cat has a thyroid issues)

4 tablets of calcium

Steps to making the food:

1. Take all your spam, tuna, and ground chuck and grind it down so that it could easily be consumed by your cat. Be sure it is not too fine, because than it will be harder to mix later and harder for your cat to absorb.

2. Take your 2 cups of water and add your salt, then mix thoroughly.

3. Next you will need a pestle and mortar to crush up your solid table. Do not crush up your gel tablets. Cut them in the center and add to your water and salt mixture. After the tablets are thoroughly crushed, add those to your salt-water-gel capsule mix. Make sure everything mixes.

4. Take your eggs and add those to your current mixture.

5. Next take your ground up meat and add to your sludge mixture.

6. Make sure you thoroughly mix the sludge and meat, because it needs to be encased inside the meat. I suggest you mix everything with your hands so that it is thorough.

7. Next put it in zip lock bags, I would portion them according to days or the amount for consumption per day by your cat. Leave these baggies with your mix in the freezer for 2-3 hours.

8. After the 2-3 hours are over, grab a baking pan and line it with foam so that the bottom is thoroughly covered and nothing can leak through.

9. Spray it with non-stick cooking spray and pre-heat your oven to 365.

10. Put your meat into the pan-minus the zip lock bags. Cook it for 25 minutes and until brownish, do not let it burn nor turn a dark brown.

11. For the next 3 hours soak it in clam juice, tuna juice, or fish juice. This would allow the meat mixture soak up the smell and taste of fish, which cats love.

12. Afterwards add it back to your zip log bags according to your terms pre-day. Freeze it for the next 36 hours.

13. It should be ready to serve, but before you serve the food-you will need to heat it up in the microwave. It should not be too hot, because cats are very sensitive to heat. I would recommend to heat it up for 2 minutes and let it cool until it is lukewarm.

14. This can be repeated as many times as necessary.

Vitamins For Ulcer

In the past people suffering from peptic ulcers were restricted from taking small amount of bland food and milk regularly. Researches however showed that this in no way helps in decreasing the recurrence of ulcers. However, a diet rich of fibers may minimize the chances of developing ulcers, and will help in fast healing of the existing ones. In particular, fiber found in fruits, vegetables are very protective, and with vitamin contained in most of these foods, the benefits are increased.

There are some evidences that show that exercise helps in reducing the risk of ulcers in some people. In a study in 2000, it was found that although exercise is helpful for men but it has a null effect on ulcer development in women. Stress relief programs are not known to have an impact on ulcer healing. However, they have other health benefits that are useful.

Treat Ulcer with Vitamin A
When it comes to ulcers, the main role of Vitamin A is to protect the lining of the stomach so that the sore, if in case it developed already, will not get worse. Vitamin A also allows for the speedy healing of the affected areas of the small intestines. Patients suffering from peptic ulcer are advised to take foods rich in Vitamin A and dietary fiber such as fruits and vegetables.

Doctors would normally recommend peptic ulcer patients an initial dosage of 25,000 IU of Vitamin A daily for an entire week. Then the dosage is reduced to just 10,000 IU everyday for maintenance. However, pregnant women or those who want to get pregnant are advised not to take more than 5,000 IU of Vitamin A daily.

Vitamin C can help Ulcer
Vitamin C works favorably for the patients of peptic ulcer because it directly inhibits the growth the very bacteria that cause the disease. Also, if the H. pylori bacteria were abundant, it would directly impair the body's absorption of Vitamin C. When this happens, the patient has higher risks of developing stomach cancers than the condition that is certainly started as peptic ulcer.

The normal dosage of Vitamin C for peptic ulcer patients is 1,000 mg taken twice a day. Because Vitamin C could reduce diarrhea, the dosage can also be taken in a baffered form.

A hormone found in the brain that has a role in sleep is known as Melatonin. Researchers have found that the hormone may have properties that will help in preventing ulcers along with reduction in acid secretion and an improvement in blood flow. Until now, it is not known if it will benefit people with peptic ulcers but it might well do so. However, high doses of Melatonin have adverse effects like mental impairment, severe headache and nightmares.

In the past anti acids were the drugs that were preferred for ulcers but now it has been replaced with proton pump inhibitors. There are natural alternatives that work really well to heal ulcer and can be used with other prescribed drugs. Researchers claim Deglycrrhizinated licorice {DGL) as a good complement to the therapeutic measures recommended by your health care professional. DGL works positively by addressing the underlying factors causing ulcers rather than trying to hide the symptoms. DGL works by promoting the natural defense mechanism that is already present in our body to fight against ulcers. Other drugs that are also beneficial in curing ulcer carry some side effects along with them but DGL has no side effect.

Therefore, although there is no sure cure for ulcers but choices available for getting rid of it are many and a proper treatment will see you through. The patient must consult the doctor for proper treatment and correct guidance. If the patient reaches at the early stage, ulcers can be easily cured with fewer complications.

Health Benefits of Amalaki – Liquid Multi Vitamins and Minerals

With a lot of debt going on about the nutritional and health benefits of different fruits, common man is confused as to what to use and what not to. The golden rule however says that profits in general are all helpful. Their abundance of vitamin and mineral content help us rejuvenate our bodies and maintain stress free attitude. However, certain fruits have gained the value of medicines in our medical community. More than medicines these fruits are termed as power-fruits that help us conquer life's odds pretty easily. Some of these fruits are amalaki, acai, rhodiola, goji, pomegranate etc.

Out of these fruits, here we are going to see benefits of amalaki. The meaning of amalaki in Sanskrit language is "sustainer". The name itself there before suggests its utility value. It is one of the richest sources of vitamin C that is 20 times more than what is found in orange. Also it is rich source of bioflavonoids, flavones, carotenoids, and polyphenols. No wonder many pharmaceutical companies use this fruit as one of the strongest ingredients of health supplements.

Let's see some of the important health benefits amalaki offers:

1) Amalaki is one of the richest sources of powerful anti-oxidants. These anti-oxidants play a crucible role in the body to drive away free radicals and restore health.

2) Cardiovascular health: These anti-oxidants are powerful tools to detoxify the body and with the destruction of free radicals, they help in reducing arterial plaque formation. This in turn gains good circulation and cadiac pumping is improved. Thus heart attacks, strokes, and related illnesses like hypertensions are prevented.

3) Gastro-intestinal tract: Due to its innate abilities, amalaki is thought to prevent constipation and hyperacidity. Obviously one can cope up with increased acid production and esophagitis and acid reflux. The fruit is also thought to affect relief to people with mild to moderate hemorrhoids and colitis. Its clearing effect on gastrointestinal tract is very helpful for people on weight-reduction regimens.

4) In Indian subcontinent, the fruit is used since thousands of years as an augmenter of vitality and youth. Its effects on mind as an energizer and mood elevator have been lauded in Indian literature.

5) In traditional medicine, amalaki is lauded for its utility in pyrexia, cough, asthma, heart problems, etc.

6) Due to its detoxifying effects relevant to high anti-oxidants content, it is thought of as one of the best blood purifiers in traditional medicine.

7) Its anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties have been utilized in infectious diseases. It has shown some promising results for prevention of many infectious and non-infectious ailments.

8) Its cholesterol lowering properties are well known and people who take regular amalaki supplements are protected from cardiac maladies for the same reason.

9) Due to its high vitamin C content, it augments the clotting mechanism of blood when required.

10) Even due to its rich anti-oxidants, amalaki is thought to prevent cancers of all origins.

Well, no doubt the fruit Amalaki is a "rejuvenator" and whole body is positively positively with its usage. Why not select a health supplement that contains natural form of amalaki and other power-fruit extracts so that we get benefits from all in one formula?

Ayurvedic Basic Dietary Guidelines

According to the Ayurvedic principles your diet should be based upon your individual constitution (the three doshas or constitutions are: Vata, Pitta and Kapha). In the Ayurvedic literature there are several types of nutritional disorders:

1. Quantitative deficiency: insufficient food leading to under-nutrition or even starvation.

2. Qualitative deficiency: wrong food combination resulting in malnutrition, insufficient essential nutrients and sometimes toxic conditions.

3. Qualitative and quantitative over-nutrition: Overeating resulting in obesity, hypertensive, heart diseases, high cholesterol levels.

4. Toxins in food: certain foods or food combination's lead to toxemia and digestive disorders.

5. Foods that are not suitable to your individual constitution: can cause immunity deficiency and disease.

The above mentioned nutritional disorders are connected to the strength of "gastric fire" or agni. Your gastric fire can be disturbed by an excess of vata dosha causing irregular appetite, indigestion and gases. The pitta dosha is responsible for an agni disorder resulting in hyperacidity, heartburn, hyper-metabolism and hypo glycaemia. An excess of kapha dosha can lead to slow metabolism, allergies and overweight. The "ideal" agni is a result of balanced tri-dosha, so a person having a balanced gastric fire can eat almost any type of food, and digestion, absorption and elimination of food are normal.

But, there is another important factor in food digestion and that is food combination. According to Ayurveda every food has its own taste, a healing or cooling energy to it and a post-digestive effect. So mixing different food tastes, energies or post-digestive effects can result in bad digestion (because agni slows down) and production of toxins.

According to Ayurveda one should take fruits, vegetables, starches, proteins and fats separately taking in consideration their constitution and the particular time of the day.

As for the influence of foods on the tri-dosha the principles are as follows:

– Pitta increases with foods that are sour and pungent.

– Kapha aggravates with milk products.

– Vata is over-stimulated by beans, dry fruits, astringent and bitter substances.

In Ayurvedic literature is suggested that you can chew 1/2 teaspoon of fresh ginger before each meal to stimulate appetite and digestion, while you should avoid drinking cold or icy water during or after the meal because it slows your gastric juices. It is suggested that you take small sips of warm water (or at room temperature) during the meals. You can end your meal with a cup of lassi (you blend 4 teaspoons of yogurt with 2 pinches of ginger and cumin powder in a cup of water).

When eating, one third of your stomach should be filled with food, one third with liquid and one third should be empty, in order to allow a proper digestion.

Here are some basic guidelines you should follow in order to avoid digestive problems. These guidelines should be followed depending on your lifestyle, type of activity and seasons. For example most people need to eat a more consistent breakfast during wintertime. During the change of seasons one is exposed more to have digestive problems (and to various illnesses) so the following guideline are usually recommended in that period.

Here are some basic rules:

– in the morning drink one or two glasses of water (at room temperature) with some drops of lemon juice,

– try to eat just fruits until noon, and wait at least 30 minutes before eating any other foods,

– eat your meals always at the same time (difference of 30-60 minutes is tolerated),

– drink only pure spring water at room temperature,

– eat mostly cooked food,

– do not eat after 7 pm (fruit, salad and soup is allowed),

– 20 minutes before your meal eat some fresh ginger with warm water,

– avoid drinking at least 2 hours after eating, you should drink in small sips during the meal,

– you should not eat bananas, cottage cheese, yogurt and other dairy products after dusk,

– when you are stressed, tense, nervous or tired you should not eat,

– when you are ill if you eat you feed the sickness, so avoid eating during illness,

– avoid going to sleep after meals.

According to Ayurveda improper food combination's produce indigestion, fermentation, putrefaction and gas formation. Over time this can lead to toxemia and various diseases.

Here are some basic Ayurvedic rules when combining food:

– Do not mix milk or yogurt with sour or citrus fruits,

– Avoid eating fruits with potatoes or other starchy foods, because fructose and starch are digested in different times (fructose quickly while starch is digested more slowly) resulting in bad digestion of sugar.

– You should not cook honey. Honey digests slowly when cooked. Uncooked honey is nectar while cooked honey is poison.

– Do not mix meat protein and milk protein together. Meat has heating energy while milk is cooling so they counteract one another, disturbing the digestion.

– Melons and grains are not good together, because of different digestion times. Melons should be ate alone.

– Milk and melons should not be combined. Both are cooling, but milk is laxative and melon is diuretic, and milk requires more time for digestion. Moreover milk curdles in the stomach. That is why you should not combine milk with sour fruits, yogurt, cheese, sour cream and fish.

Three Ways H Pylori Can Kill

In a recent survey I conducted on H Pylori, one of the most common questions that people asked was "Can H Pylori Kill?" Well, unfortunately the answer to this question is "yes, H Pylori can kill". It may surprise you to read this, especially if your doctor has dismissed H Pylori as only a minor problem (some doctors will not even treat H Pylori, despite overwhelming medical and scientific evidence that the bacterium can cause severe illness).

So how can H Pylori kill?

1. Perforated Ulcer, Bleeding Ulcer, Perforated Peptic Ulcer

This is a very serious condition where untreated stomach ulcer can burn through the wall of the stomach (or other areas of the GI tract), allowing digestive juices and food to leak into the abdominal cavity. Treatment generally requires immediate surgery. The ulcer is known initially as a peptic ulcer before the ulcer burns through the full thickness of the stomach or duodenal wall. Because H Pylori causes 80% stomach ulcers and 95% duodenal ulcers, this is one way that it can be fatal.

2. Stomach Cancer (MALT Lymphoma)

MALT lymphoma is a form of lymphoma involving the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), frequently of the stomach, but virtually any mucosal site can be afflicted. Gastric MALT lymphoma is frequently associated (72-98%) with chronic inflammation (gastritis) as a result of the presence of Helicobacter pylori. It is estimated that approximately 1% of people with H Pylori develop this condition which, if left untreated, may lead to death. If the disease is limited to the stomach (which is assessed with computed tomography), then 70-80% of patients will have a complete regression on treatment with antibiotic eradication of H. pylori.

3. Heart Disease

Recent studies have suggested an association between H Pylori and heart disease. Although the research is not yet definitive, there is enough evidence to keep an open mind on this issue. Several mechanisms, including molecular mimicry and elevations in cholesterol and inflammatory markers in the blood (such as C reactive protein) have been postulated as contributing to heart disease.

** What To Do **

The diseases discussed in this article are advanced and serious conditions that will likely only affect a small percentage of people with H Pylori. Millions more people, however will suffer with peptic ulcers, duodenal ulcers, reflux, stomach pain, IBS, rosacea, hives and nauseaa as a result of H Pylori.

It is, therefore, very important to treat H Pylori and run follow up testing 4 weeks after treatment to ensure that it has been eradicated. Triple Therapy antibiotics will work for some people, but others will require a natural treatment using herbs such as mastic gum, MSM, berberine, garlic and Matula Herbal Formula.

Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis – Early Signs to Watch For

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS)

Rheumatoid arthritis is an "autoimmune disorder that causes redness around the lining around joints." Rheumatoid Arthritis will cause damage in the eyes, lungs and in the heart. years. It usually will not just disappear.

What Are the Symptoms?

Joint inflammation is accompanied by discomfort. The Individual will also experience pain, hot skin and red puffiness. Infection is a physical condition in which part of the body becomes reddened, swollen, hot, and often painful and is common with this illness. It usually occurs in a mirror image on either side of the body. The Redness is typically found on the wrists, knees and hands. Another indication of Rheumatoid Arthritis is joint rigidity. This typically flares up in the AM. Same thing will happen after lengthy times of physical inactivity. People may experience continuous tiredness, accompanied by a slight temperature. It usually comes on over a long period of time. However, there are cases where the symptoms can occur quickly, but they are rare.

Who Gets the Disease?

It affects Men and Women that are between the ages of 30 to 60 years old. There are times when youngsters can be afflicted with the disease, but this is not common. There are Seniors and Elderly that get it, but this is also not common. It is estimated that a little more than One Percent of people in the US have RA. The chances of getting the illness is 200-300% higher in females then in males. The reason is not known. There is evidence that shows the illness is passed on through the DNA. That means a relative being diagnosed with RA, will increase your risk of getting the disease. Doctors do not have an understanding of the causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis but say that, "A Percentage of the Individual people may be genetically disposed to inflammation". This inflammation occurs on the inside protective lining of the joints. It can actually ruin the cartilage and the bones around them. The diseased area will continue to deform and will eventually not work. As time goes by, the disease joints will start getting more and more painful.

The Disease impacts many organs and other body parts.

Rheumatoid nodules create hard bumps underneath the skin.
Sjogren's syndrome is the inflammation and breakage of the glands of the eyeballs and oral cavity.
Pericarditis shows up in the lining surrounding the chambers of the heart.
Anemi is a shortage of functioning red blood cells.
Felty syndrom is the shortage of white blood cells in the body.
Vasculitis causes the veins and arteries to get inflamed which will restrict blood flow to the entire rest of the body.

Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis is rare with children. It does have the same symptoms as what you would see in adults. It has been known to impede a youngsters ability to reach their genetically predispose height. If the Health Care professional is concerned that you have developed the disease, they may run some hemoglobin experiments to see if there are indications of inflammation. There are several procedures in place to check for Rheumatoid Arthritis. Most Doctors will have you do some Image Testing, other Doctors will have you get an MRI. A sufferer is sure to get X-Rays of the joints and other infected areas. These X-rays can give the doctor a standard to compare to previous X-rays, to determine the progress of the disease.

The Newest treatments for RA

Simply put, there is no complete cure. However, there are protocols that are capable to reduce joint inflammation and the pain and suffering that comes with it. Prescription medications may reduce the further physical wrecking of the joints. Your Health Care Professional will create a strategy based on your progress of the disease. The Doctor will factor in your age, the affected body parts, and the degree that the disease has progressed. If the Doctor's plan includes prescription pills, get a smart pill box or a smart pill organizer to make sure you take the right pills at the right time. The doctor will also recommend physical exercise. The most commonly prescribed medications are, steroids, and pain relievers.

There are other medications that protect your joints from additional break down. If the Joint damage has gone beyond medication or when the pain has become intolerable, the MD can recommend surgery. Joint removal and replacement of the knees and the hips are their most used procedures.

Lymphatic Massage – The Benefits

Lymphatic massage or lymph drainage massage is a technique used to help increase lymph flow.

Increased lymph flow removes harmful substances from the tissues and increases immune function.

Lymphatic massage can be useful in cases of edema, sports injury or for people experiencing a sluggish immune system or those suffering from a lack of energy.

What is the Lymphatic System?

The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in your body’s ability heal from injury and ward off disease.

It is essential to the body’s drainage system for cleansing and filtering out toxins and bacteria.

Problems With The Lymphatic System

Aches, pains, soreness and flu like symptoms could all be caused by congested lymph pathways.

The Benefits of Lymphatic Massage

Lymphatic massage can help to unblock the lymph system by manually cleansing the lymph system in a clockwise fashion.

Performing lymphatic massage correctly can stimulate the opening of the initial lymphatic and increase the volume of lymph flow by as much as 20 times.

Because lymph cleanses nearly every cell in your body the negative effects of chronic lymph blockages include but are not limited to:

o Frequent cold and flu infections

What is Lymphatic Massage?

The use of massage as a healing therapy dates back centuries.

Lymphatic massage was developed in the 1930s and is a delicate form of massage that stimulates the body’s lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system has no central pump and depends on muscle contraction through deep breathing, exercise and manual manipulation to move fluid.

Lymphatic massage utilizes a very light pressure combined with soft pumping movements in the direction of the lymph nodes. Immune system function can be significantly increased, improving metabolism and helping the body to eliminate waste and toxins.

A strong immune system makes you feel balanced, happy and whole.

As with most massage, it is vital to drink lots of water after a lymphatic massage to flush away toxins that have been released.

Lymphatic Massage – What can it be used for?

Lymphatic massage has been used for years to enhance the quality of the skin.

o Lymphatic massage aids the increase of lymph flow. When the lymph is flowing as it should, cells are bathed in fresh fluid making the skin look fresh and alive.

Lymphatic massage is also useful for people with sports injuries.

o When applied after neuromuscular massage, lymphatic massage helps to clear the tissue of debris and reduce the minor edema that can occur after deep tissue massage.

o Repeated lymphatic massage whilst healing from a sports injury can help to enhance the tissue regeneration process by keeping the tissue as healthy as possible.

It is thought that lymphatic massage can also help the scarring process by enhancing circulation and immunity.

o Increased lymph flow around the scar stimulates damaged lymph vessels to heal.

o Increased lymph flow draws away toxins improving the health of the tissues.

Another common use of lymph drainage massage is in breast cancer cases.

o Women who have had axillary lymph nodes removed sometimes develop edema in their arm. As long as there is only minor swelling, then a massage therapist with a good knowledge of contraindication and some specific techniques can do a great amount of good.

Lymphatic Massage – Is it Safe?

For the most part lymphatic massage is safe. However as with all massage therapies there are some contra indications. For lymphatic massage specifically, these include acute inflammation, malignant tumors, thrombosis and major heart problems.

To get the best results from a lymphatic massage, seek out a suitably trained and qualified therapist.

Minimally Invasive Aortic Valve Replacement is the Best Option – Learn How it is Done and Why

The surgical approach to aortic valve disease has been dramatically improved upon by the introduction of minimally invasive aortic valve replacement techniques. Even the elderly and frail patients can enjoy a fast and painless recovery and return to their families and homes two to three days after surgery. The aortic valve is a one-way valve that opens into the Aorta, which is the main “pipeline” that comes out of the heart. There are two basic problems that can affect its function:

  • If it does not open properly, the heart will struggle against the resistance offered by a closed and stiff valve that impairs the ability of the heart to empty out when it is contracting. We describe this condition as Aortic Valve Stenosis.
  • On the opposite end of the spectrum the same valve might be “leaky” and not close well when the heart is reloading in between contractions. That makes the pumping action of the heart very inefficient because a good portion of the oxygenated blood that is pumped forward into the main pipeline will leak back into the heart. This condition is known as Aortic Valve Insufficiency or Regurgitation.

About 6% of the elderly U.S. population and a small percentage of the younger population is affected by these severe malfunctions of the aortic valve and need a life saving minimally invasive aortic valve replacement before it is too late. This article will outline the reasons why a minimally invasive aortic valve replacement is by far the best way to address these pathologies.

Unfortunately, most cardiac surgeons have not had the time, the willingness or the opportunity to learn these new minimally invasive aortic valve surgery techniques and are still using the old fashioned splitting of the breast bone (median sternotomy). In addition, they end up using blood transfusions in most of their surgical patients. This approach has many disadvantages, including slow wound healing, more wound infections, more postoperative pain and bleeding, a slow recovery from surgery and a poor cosmetic result with a 12″ to 14″ midline scar from the base of the neck to the bottom of the breast bone.

If an aortic valve replacement is what you need, these are the reasons WHY you should seek out a minimally invasive aortic valve replacement approach and a description of HOW we can perform open heart surgery through a tiny incision on the right side of the chest wall (minithoracotomy):

  • No bone cutting at all. The incision opens a tiny space between two ribs and heals very well. Infections in this type of wound are almost unheard of.
  • No pain. Small amounts of local anesthetic are injected in between the ribs and make this incision pain free. Our patients wake up pain-free after their minimally invasive aortic valve replacement
  • Very little bleeding. This approach avoids the bleeding caused by bone cutting and by the larger incisions used in old fashioned surgery. Very few patients require any blood transfusion after a minimally invasive aortic valve replacement
  • Fast recovery. Even the elderly and frail patients are back on their feet in less than 24 hours and can often go home two days after surgery.
  • Excellent cosmetic results. All you have to show is a tiny 2″ thin scar on the right side of your chest. You would still be able to wear an open shirt, a blouse or an evening gown and that tiny scar will be completely out of sight. It is a very safe, accurate and precise way to perform a heart valve replacement.

Here is my warm piece of advice. If you need open heart surgery ASK about these minimally invasive options. Be specific about the fact that you want a minithoracotomy. If you are not offered these options it is worthwhile to get a second opinion in a Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery Center with advanced expertise in this type of surgery. After all, it’s your body, it’s your heart, it’s your life!

Coronary Artery Disease: Dumbing Down Medical Jargon

You are in a hospital room and overhear the physician say the word (or you think it’s a word) “STEMI.” What exactly does this mean? Coronary artery disease and it’s consequences do not have to be a foreign language.

First of all coronary artery disease is just a fancy term for heart disease. Basically, when the choloesterol is high, plaque is able to be formed and gathers in the heart arteries (or coronary arteries). When this plaque is growing, it can form a clot due to attracting platelets that are gathering to try to heal or fix the plaque. This platelet rich clot grows to the point of stressing the heart whether completely or incompletely.

There are currently three different types of CAD (coronary artery disease) types. The least invasive is UA or unstable angina. Basically angina means heart pain. The second is called NSTEMI or non S-T wave elevation myocardial infarction. The third is called STEMI or S-T wave elevation myocardial infarction.

UA and NSTEMI present the same. Both with chest pain. The difference between the two is that NSTEMI has coronary markers or troponin involved. UA does not. NSTEMI is a clot that is not complete. STEMI, on the other hand, is a complete clot and more of an emergency because cell death is happening in the heart muscle. With no blood flow down a coronary artery, the heart muscle is dying. When the heart muscle cells begin to die due to lack of oxygen and blood, the heart cannot function properly and will go into erratic rhythms. Most of the time, this is what causes death.

The difference between NSTEMI and STEMI is the S-T elevation in the heart waves. S-T elevation signifies cardiac cell death and is a more serious event.

The reason why your doctor will always give you aspirin is due to aspirin’s anti-platelet effects. Aspirin is a wonderful drug in that it targets that platelet rich clot that is forming in your coronary arteries and helps to prevent a heart attack. It is also the FIRST thing that you should take if you feel the symptoms of a heart attack coming on… aspirin 81 mg. Well, that and if you have a nitroglycerin sublingual tablet and get to the emergency room fast!

The goal is to prevent these events from happening in the first place. The statins are a class of drugs that help to reduce cholesterol, specifically LDL in the bloodstream to prevent these clots from forming (Lipitor, Pravachol, Zocor, etc… ). Diet and exercise are the best to try first.

I hoped this helped to clear up some of the more complex terms of coronary artery disease.

Heart Attack Survivors – Heart Disease Is Not An Aspirin Deficiency

Heart disease remains the number one killer in Canada, despite the fact that billions of dollars are spent each year treating cardiovascular disease. Personal prevention should be exercised to eliminate / control several risk factors of heart disease including high blood pressure, obesity, stress, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, and elevated cholesterol levels.

Many heart patients take blood thinners, such as aspirin. Research has shown that the risk of a first heart attack can be reduced by as much as 50% by taking aspirin regularly. However, 70% of long-term aspirin users experience intestinal bleeding and ulcers. As well, aspirin consumption can have other serious side effects such as:

Protein loss due to impaired transport through intimate lining.

Reduced immune function due to binding of certain prostaglandins important for normal immune responses.

Impaired ability of white blood cells (part of immune system) to absorb vitamin C, which is essential for their proper functioning.

Worsening of food sensitivities / allergies due to the damage to the intestinal wall.

Worsening of asthma, kidney problems and anemia in sensitive people.
Heart disease is greatly influenced by nutrition. The minimal nutritional requirements for reducing risk factors include the elimination of red meat, animal fats, fried foods, spicy foods, processed, and refined foods from the diet.

Increased consumption of cardio-protective foods (fish, not seafood) is recommended. Additionally, a well-known nutrient beneficial to heart disease pronone patients is Alllicin. It is especially useful in cases of high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Allicin can be found in garlic, and while the increased consumption of garlic is beneficial, garlic tablets from a reputable source ensure the necessary intake of Allicin.

Also from a nutritional standpoint, people prone to heart disease should be limiting the intake of foods high in vitamin K, which increases blood clotting (alfalfa, broccoli, cauliflower, egg yolks, liver, spinach, and all dark green vegetables) and increase the intake of foods that enhance the effects of anticoagulants (wheat germ, vitamin E, soybean and sunflower seeds).

To complement the above dietary improvements, supplements, herbs, homeopathy, and acupuncture can all work in a synergistic way to help the heart function normally again.

Please remember that these suggestions are general; for an individual approach to your specific condition, consider our on-line treatment option.

Remember: Heart disease is not an aspirin deficiency. Even though aspirin is the drug of choice, there are many other natural alternatives for a heart attack survivor.
