The Signs and Symptoms of Canine Parvovirus

Canine Parvovirus is a contagious disease like no other. The virus can stay on soils and clothing for up to a year. This means that it is possible for your dog to catch the disease even if your dog has no actual contact with an infected dog. Because of this, it is important that dog owners are always on guard and aware of the symptoms of the parvovirus in case it strikes.

The main symptoms that your dog may show if they have parvovirus are depression and lethargy. You will notice that your dog is not acting as they normally do, and will not have a very large appetite. Next, severe diarrhea and vomiting is likely to come. Many dog owners ask how to tell the difference between regular dirrhea and that of parvovirus and the answer is that virus induced diarrhea will sometimes be bloody and will be more severe than any other diarrhea you have seen.

On top of this vomiting it is quite likely to see your dog having difficulties breathing and moving. This is because the parvovirus is attacking the cardiac muscles of your pet. Another common parvovirus symptom is a high fever, which will usually come on after most of the other symptoms.

If you suspect that your dog has parvo then you need to get it to the vet as soon as possible. Parvovirus has no cure but dogs can be nursed back to recovery if the you treat the illness with the care and attention it describes. Make sure that you inform yourself of the virus. Do not let your dog suffer; Teach yourself about the virus and get prepared.

The Dangers of Drinking Coffee

If you drink coffee because you think you need to in order to rev or pep you up daily, especially if you work in corporate America, here are some things to think about pertaining to this liquid drug that is the number one cause of cancer of the esophagus:

The first thing you should think about is – why would you drink something that is so hot that if you stuck your finger in it, it would burn the hell out of you? If it burns your finger, what do you think it does to your tissues and cells throughout your body? Hot beverages destroy (kill) your cells, i.e. cancer!

Coffee is a stimulant to the central nervous system. Drinking coffee inhibits the release of natural brain opiates (that make you feel good and counteracts pain). Women need all the natural brain opiates their bodies can muster up, especially around the menstrual period and not to mention childbirth (which is very painful due to the inordinate decrease of opiates in the modern American woman). Coffee may rev you up for a while, but is sure to bring down as well (making you crave more of it, after all, it is a drug, at least in the state that we use it today). Excessive consumption of coffee causes shaking and trembling of the hands due to nervousness. Coffee greatly impairs the nervous system.

Coffee also kills the adrenal glands. Nearly everyone in America has shot-out adrenal glands!

Coffee revs up these glands, but also brings them down. Anything that goes up and then down taxes the body.

Coffee contains the stimulant caffeine. This is dead caffeine, unlike bio-active caffeine found in green tea, black tea, yerba mat, guarana, and kola nut. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant that is followed by a depressed phase resulting in exhaustion, nervousness, irritability, fatigue, and often headache. Caffeine constricts blood vessels of the brain and causes decreased flow of blood which cuts the oxygen supply to the brain, resulting in gradual brain damage. It also increases your heartbeat 15% and makes your lungs work 13 times harder than normal. It greatly plays a role in fatigue as well.

The volatile oil in caffeine called caffeol is an irritant to the lining of the stomach and causes poor digestion.

Another chemical in this liquid drug is caffeo-tannic acid. This chemical is used in tanning leather. It is an irritating astringent to the cells lining the stomach and intestines and also destroys the pepsin in the gastric (stomach) juice needed to digest protein.

Coffee is a drug! Do you know why coffee is freely given in corporate America? Because it makes people work and perform efficiently by speeding up the brain so that jobs can get the best productivity out of their workers (slaves). People mainly drink coffee in the morning, at least 3 cups (over 400+ mg of caffeine) by noon. But by noon, they are mentally shot and drained, which explains why job productivity decreases around noontime in America. The workers will then get their caffeine kick or hit from drinking soda pop (coke, pepsi, etc.) and/or eating chocolate, which is also why you see these vending machines that sell sodas and chocolates in corporate America.

If you want to get something out of people, just give them some caffeine. Coffee, chocolate, cigarettes, and soda all have caffeine. When investigators or police want to obtain information from people, what do they offer people? A cup of coffee and a cigarette!

In wars, what do American soldiers give the children of the countries they are fighting in and against (especially when they want information)? Chocolate bars!

Most restaurants and diners offer you a cup of coffee for starters. Why? Because coffee clears the palate (taste buds) and sense of olfaction (smell), as well as make your stomach crave food so that you will become hungry, be able to smell the food, and taste the substance of the food once you begin to eat the food. Why do you think they have you smell coffee beans in a jar at aromatherapy shops? To clear your olfaction (sense of smell) so you can smell the various oils.

Did you know that early Arab Muslims used to give the potential or prospective Muslim convert and warrior free coffee at lectures, to get them to join Islam and fight in so-called holy wars (jihad) for the cause of Islam?

The Arabs had the market on coffee sealed. When Europeans first got their hands and taste buds on coffee, they went crazy. Europeans wanted to start a market for coffee in Europe but the Arabs were not having that! Certain European merchants began to start secretly exporting coffee out of Africa and Arabia (where coffee originated), and importing it into Europe. The Europeans did not want the Arabs to know what they were doing with their drug (coffee), so once the Europeans got the coffee into their country, they began to refer to it by code names, such as Java, Mocha, and cappucino, which are all names of countries where European merchants were exporting coffee from. Java is an island in Indonesia. Mocha is a city in Yemen, Arabia. Cappucino derives its name from the Italian city Capuchin (all Arab Muslim strongholds). The word coffee itself derives its name from kaf, the Ethiopian name for coffee.

A great alternative to drinking coffee is Teeccino herbal coffee, made of roasted carob, barley, chicory root, figs, dates, orange peel and almonds. It is very delicious and tastes just like coffee if not better. You can find it (and other tastes) at most health food stores such as Whole Food Market (1-800-SHOP-WFM).

Herbal teas such as guarana, kola nut, and yerba mate are also excellent alternatives to coffee and includes bio-active caffeine which is not deleterious to the body.

The herbs borage, basil, licorice, ginseng, astragalus, and fo ti are great for restoring the adrenal glands.

Buttock Pain Causes

“We gotta start looking at the hands of the time we’ve been given here, This is all we got and we gotta start pickin it, Every second counts on a clock that’s tickin’, Gotta live like we’re dying…..” these lyrics from Kris Allen’s song ‘Live Like We’re Dying’ talks about the uncertainties in life and inspires people to live every moment to the fullest. It was once a known fact of life that with age came various health issues. Nevertheless, thanks to all the scientific inventions and the elements of modernization, we no longer have to wait for our hair to turn grey to experience critical health conditions. Buttock and lower back pain are some of the commonest of all conditions experienced by people of all age groups today. There are several factors that can lead to severe pain in the buttocks and lower back. Some of the scientifically explained causes of buttock pain are listed below to provide you with a better understanding of this medical condition. Read on to learn more about them.

Hip Pain Causes

Sciatica
Sciatica is a medical term used to refer to the pain caused by the compression or irritation caused in the longest nerve in the human body, namely the ‘sciatic nerve’. The sciatic nerve originates in the spinal column and travels all the way down the buttocks to the lower limbs. Sciatic pain can be dull or sharp with a burning sensation felt from the lower back to the buttocks. The pain and burning sensation can even extend to the sides of the leg. Sciatica can also be accompanied by tingling sensations and numbness in the legs and feet of a person. The pain in the buttocks can worsen due to prolonged sitting.

Herniated Disc
The bones of the vertebrae or the spine are cushioned by the ‘gristle’, commonly also known as the disks. The inner layer of the disk is soft and is called the ‘nucleus’, while its tough outer part is known as ‘annulus’. A small displacement in the inner portion i.e. nucleus because of a tear in annulus can compress or irritate the surrounding nerves hence producing sharp pain. This displacement of the disk is known as ‘herniated disk or slipped disk’ in medical terms. A slipped disk can lead to sciatica, thereby causing pain in the lower back and the buttocks.

Piriformis Syndrome
Piriformis syndrome is a condition where the ‘piriformis’ muscle that lies deep in the buttock causes irritation in the sciatic nerve. This can lead to sharp buttock pain, lower back pain and lower hip pain. This syndrome can be caused due to the overuse of this particular muscle.

Spinal Stenosis
This is a medical condition in which the spinal canal compresses the spinal cord and the surrounding nerves. This compression or blockage in the lower spine can cause pain in the buttocks.

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction
A dysfunction of the sacroiliac joints that are located at the bottom of the back on either side of the spine can cause severe buttock pain at times. Any kind of injury or inflammation of the sacroiliac joint and the supporting ligament can lead to pain in the buttock and can even cause lower back pain.

Iliolumbar Ligament Injury
Iliolumbar ligament can also lead to severe buttock pain if strained or subject to some kind of injury. This ligament travels from the base of the spine towards the waist, and any tension or strong impact on this ligament can lead to severe lower back and buttock pain.

Other Possible Causes
Apart from the above mentioned causes, buttock pain can also be caused due to a few other conditions. Arthritis, osteoarthritis, gluteals claudication and spinal stenosis are other conditions that can cause pain in your buttocks and possibly the lower back.

Cranial Nerve VII – The Facial Nerve and How to Test Its Function

The seventh cranial nerve is predominantly a motor nerve supplying the muscles of facial expression. The sensory component is small, it carries taste sensations from the anterior 2/3rds of the tongue and cutaneous sensations from the anterior wall of the external auditory canal.

The taste fibers are carried by the lingual nerve, which is a branch of the mandibular nerve and these fibers join the chorda tympani. The motor nucleus of the seventh nerve lies anterior and lateral to the abducens nucleus in the lower pons. The intrapontine fibers hook around the sixth nerve nucleus to emerge at the cerebellopontine angle, lateral to the corticospinal tract. Along with the auditory canal through the internal auditory neatus. Anterioly it bends sharply forward and downward, and at this angle lies the geniculate ganglion. Distally, the nerve exits through the stylomastoid foramen. Immediately after its exit from the skull, the nerve passes through the parotid gland, and gives rise to five branches to supply the orbicularis oculi, orbicularis oris, frnatalis, zygomatic muscles, buccinator, platysma and other muscles of facial expression. Within the facial canal, just distal to the geniculate ganglion, through the greater superificial petrosal nerve it supplies the sphenopalantine ganglion which innervates the lacrimal glands and gives another branch to the stapedius muscle, before being joined by the chorda tympani.

Testing

The patient should be asked to frown, wrinkle his forehead, rise his eyebrows, close his eyes tightly against resistance, retract the angle of his mouth, show his teeth, blow his cheeks and whistle, If there is difficulty in any of the above functions, it could be compared with the healthy side. Also note for any asymmetry of palpebral fissure and the nasolabial fold in the resting position.

The sensation of the anterior aspect of the external auditory canal is test wit cotton. Taste from the anterior 2/3rds of the tongue is tested using 4 common flavors, and quinine. The tongue should be protruding throughout the test and the patient be protruding throughout the test and the patient should not be allowed to speak. The words, sweet, salt, sour and bitter are written on a paper, and the subject is asked to point to the word that signifies the taste he perceives. For the posterior third of the tongue, the same materials can be used for testing. As an alternative stimulus, galvanic current can be used. Facial paralysis (Palsy) may be of the lower motor neuron type or upper motor neuron type.

Skin Rash Reactions to Jacuzzi and Chlorine Pools

The summer season brings a lot of hot days and many head to the beach to cool off. For others, the long drives to beaches does not is not practical, so the condo pool or local swimming pool works well.  It’s fun to go swimming with your family and friends especially if you are experiencing the scorching heat of ninety degree days.

There are some things to consider when you choose a swimming pool especially a public one. It’s  possible that you may contract certain skin complications or rashes from them. There are different kinds of rash. If you use a jacuzzi or hot tub you may get eruptions from there. Many health clubs and condo associations have both a jacuzzi as well as a pool for swimming. There are also chlorine rash or swimmer’s itch. Normally, in order to maintain a clean jacuzzi or pool to swim in it’s necessary to kill unwanted bacteria. Chlorine is applied to the pool water to maintain its safety. Some people are allergic to chlorine which can result in a red rash. Other people may get a rash due to overexposure but are fine otherwise. Chlorine rash is a form of chemical contact dermatitis.

You can also react to the bacteria called pseudomonas aeruginosa. This can be present in both pools and hot tubs. It can even be on the filters in pools and resist anti-bacterial agents. The effect of this bacteria can include pimples and blisters that resembles the effect of a chickenpox. There can also be fungus and other causes of rashes. The more crowded a pool or jacuzzi is, the possibility of the anti-bacterial agent breaking down increases. Also a further complication is when the elderly or young children accidentally have urination issues in water.

Here are some precautions to prevent rashes:

Moderation is the key. Do not overexpose your skin to the pools chlorine; let it have ample rest to breathe. If you know you are allergic to chlorine then you’ll need to avoid the pool and head to the beach.

Shower with warm water before you take a dip on the pool, also shower after taking a dip on the pool.

Choose swimming pools that are regularly maintained or cleaned.

Another cause of rashes or swimmer’s itch is from birds, mammals and even snails. Do be careful.

You can use over the counter corticosteroid creams, cool compresses, oatmeal baths,  baking soda soaks, or various anti-itch lotions that are available without a prescription such as Aveeno or Calamine lotion to treat inflammation. Be sure to give your body a break from pools to let it heal.

Be safe and have fun, take care of your skin and enjoy the warm weather.

What is Basal Cell Carcinoma Skin Cancer?

A basal cell carcinoma skin cancer is the result of sun damage to the skin. The cancer tends to enlarge in a slow and steady pattern. It has the capability to spread to the tissue nearby. However, it cannot spread to the distant part of the body.

The best and the only way to detect this cancer is to go for a biopsy. The procedure involves removal of a small piece of the skin and letting a pathologist analyze it under the microscope in a medical laboratory.

The process does not work towards removing the cancer. It only takes off at the top just like the tip of an ice berg. Sometimes, the skin works towards healing once the biopsy is done as it starts growing over the cancer.

Now, this does not indicate that the cancer is gone. It just means that the cancer is covered with a layer of skin. In case, the cancer is not eliminated completely, it can get deep in to the skin and results in greater harm.

Basal cell carcinoma skin cancer is the most common type of cancer existing in the world. This cancer can be quite destructive and even disfiguring. It consists of the risk of developing serious skin problems.

People with family history of basal cell carcinoma skin cancer are more vulnerable to developing this disease. Also people who have exposed themselves to sunlight or exposed to carcinogenic chemicals such as arsenic are at greater risk of developing this disease.

The treatment of this dangerous disease is either via surgery, topical chemotherapy, cryosurgery, or photodynamic therapy. The disease is not life threatening. However, if left untreated, the disease can disfigure the skin, results in bleeding and even result in local destruction in areas such as eye, ear, nose and lip.

There are several types of basal cell carcinoma skin cancer as mentioned below:

a) Nodular

This appears as flesh colored papule with telangiectasis. In case, it becomes ulcerates, it
results in ‘rodent ulcer’. It is an ulcerating nodule with a pearly border.

b) Cystic

This is a rare type of basal cell carcinoma skin cancer and very difficult to distinguish from the nodular type. It has a cavity in the centre with fluid.

c) Pigmented

This is another variant of the nodular type of basal cell carcinoma skin cancer. This should not confuse with melanoma.

d) Sclerosing

It is a scar like lesion.

e) Superficial

This type of basal cell carcinoma skin cancer appears as a red scaling patch.

Basal cell carcinoma skin cancer may look different from normal skin. It may also appear as skin bump or a growth that looks pearly, waxy, white, light pink, flesh colored, brown or even flat.

Here are some symptoms of basal cell carcinoma skin cancer:

– A skin sore that may bleed easily

– A sore that does not heal properly

– Sore with crusting or oozing spots

– Sore just like a scar without an injured area.

– Irregular blood vessels around the spot

Rush to a skin doctor as soon as you observe some of the above symptoms.

A Conversation With The Body

Muscle is built with progressive overload which means that the body is able to adapt to the stress that you put it under over a certain period. The condition that your body is in today reflects the quality of the conversation that you have been having with your own body.

The health industry boom that started in the 1980’s gave birth to comprehensive studies on how the body reacts to exercise. Sports science has since become a recognized science that continues to make enormous contributions to the general knowledge that we know about our bodies. We have come a long way since the first competitive bodybuilders started training instinctively over 50 years ago.

There are many examples of this, but probably one that has affected most of us and the way that we train now is the discovery that the best way to gain muscle on a long-term basis is with HIIT training. High intensity interval training (HIIT) has been studied extensively and we now know what works best when trying to get results.

From fat loss to muscle gain, the ability to train with a high intensity over a short period of only 45 minutes works best. If this type of training is done correctly the results will increase the speed of metabolism that will burn more calories for up to 72 hours after this high intensity workout.

Effective fat loss is just one of the benefits that training with HIIT has now been proven to do for us by sports scientists. They have also conclusively proven that when training with HIIT you will put on more muscle than when you just lift a weight until you get tired like bodybuilders used to do.

Yoga which was started thousands of years ago was the first opportunity than people had to start a conversation with our body. Learning the limitations of what your body can do is part of that conversation and any bodybuilder who wants to add muscle needs to know the best way to converse with the body.

Any exercise no matter what you do is a conversation with your body. Challenging your pain barrier by simply raising your heart rate when you walk faster or train harder is a conversation with yourself and your body. Our bodies are built to react to this stress and without this our bodies simply waste away.

When a bodybuilder is doing a specific isolated exercise on one body-part he/she is talking specifically to that one muscle group or body part. The person doing the exercise is challenging that body-part which is giving constant feedback on its capability to complete the movement.

It is this conversation that results in the ability of the body to adapt and the millions of joggers that we have across the world know this conversation very well. They know that when they go for a job, whether it be for 5 minutes or five hours, it will start this conversation.

This conversation that we have with our bodies could be compared to self-knowledge and that any top athlete will have developed the ability to converse with his/her body so effectively that they know exactly what they can and can’t do. It all starts with the ability to ‘stress’ the body to a point it has never been before which is what progressive overload is.

The muscle adapts to this ‘stress’ because our bodies are built to survive and just like the conversation that you have with yourself when you meditate there is a self-learning that only gets results over time. If we think of doing any form of exercise as a simple conversation with our bodies we might be able to push ourselves a bit farther.

Type 2 Diabetes – What Does Eating in Moderation Mean to You?

In theory, “eat in moderation” sounds like great advice. But is it useful in practice? Let us not forget most information is tailored for a general audience. As such, it may be watered down when applied to your particular situation. Therefore, it pays to explore further the notion of “eating in moderation” so you can either make the most of this piece of advice or discard it should it prove a waste of time for you.

Type 2 diabetics or those trying to lose weight are most likely to resonate with this idea. Eating in moderation sounds confident and may seem like a fruitful endeavor. After all, extremes tend to be harmful, particularly in regards to eating habits and nutrition. Eat too much, and you gain weight, eat too little and struggle endlessly just to lose a few pounds. Even if there is a benefit to temporary caloric deprivation, it just makes burnout a more likely scenario.

The last thing you need as a Type 2 diabetic is to get off track just when you were making improvements with your blood sugar readings and weight loss. It takes time to shed unnecessary body fat for good and see high blood sugar levels lower and stabilize, so it is better to be patient and do things right the first time. But is moderation the key to success?

In short, the answer is yes and no. Eating in moderation is beneficial when you are choosing to eat the right foods. There is no point to moderation if you are using it as an excuse to eat anything despite your high blood sugar levels or excess body weight.

For example, chips have an exorbitant amount of fat and have no place in an eating plan geared for weight loss. Similarly, sodas are a disaster for anyone with Type 2 diabetes considering they give a dangerous blood sugar spike while supplying the body with nothing useful. Regardless of moderation, consuming such products is harmful and serves no use beyond satisfying a transient craving that needs to be suppressed.

“Everything’s fine in moderation” sounds like something we want to hear, but you will do well to steer away from it if your health is not in great standing. That said, this does not mean you have to cut your favorite foods from your diet completely. Rather, you should forget about moderation. Having your favorite dessert from time to time is okay – finding a way to consume it daily is not! It is necessary to have a balance but striving for moderation tends to be a justification that makes you slip up more often than not.
