Losing Weight The Way Nature Intended

Obesity means there is too much body fat. Obesity increases your risk for serious consequences, such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes, and sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition that causes the individual to stop breathing for a few seconds or more while sleep. This in turn can lead to insomnia and fatigue is often a side affect.

Obesity can have many causes, some of which are, stress, boredom, and not having a support system to fall back on, such as family and friends. Relationship in a supportive system can be of great help in preventing obesity. Unfortunately, these individuals are faced with a conundrum of being bombarded with a myriad of weight loss programs. It is impossible to read a newspaper or magazine, or even watch television or listen to the radio without being touted with a weight loss program. There are literally hundreds of diets, and each espouses their own unique way to lose weight.

Therefore, it is incumbent upon the individual to assess these programs before going on them. Some of these diets do work and the individual will loss weight.- at the beginning- and even for some period of time. Weight loss on these diets can be very dramatic, but unfortunately it is not a lasting solution to their problem. Once you are off the diet, the weight will start to return, and in some cases the weight gain is very rapid and sustained. It is indeed heartbreaking to have lost 20, 30, 40 or more pounds, only to see a return to the original overweight condition, and possibly even worse than before.

There are many individuals who appear heavy, yet they are not overweight because of having heavy musculature. It is for this reason, knowing your body mass index (BMI) can be of value in knowing how much weight you should lose. Normal ranges for women are 16 to 28 percent of body fat. For men it is 10 to 22 percent. The way to determine your BMI:

MEN:

Pinch a fold of the tissue on your abdomen and measure the width. A inch inch measurement will have 13 to 18 percent body fat. A 1 inch measurement will 18 to 22 percent body fat.

WOMEN:

Women will measure by pinching the soft tissue under the back of the upper arm. A inch inch measurement is equivalent to 18 to 23 percent of body fat. A 1-inch measurement is equivalent to 23 to 28 percent body fat.

ANOTHER METHOD FOR DETERMINING BMI IN BOTH MEN AND WOMEN

Use your height measurement in inches. Subtract the waist measurement from the height measurement; The result is your BMI. The normal range in this method of measurement is 36 or above. Any number below this signifies that there is an abnormal amount of body fat present.

EXAMPLE:

Height of 69 inches. Waist 35 inches …. 69 minus 35 = 34. A normal reading.

Many individuals, who are morbidly obese, will take more serious measures to combat their obesity. Bariatric surgery, such as Gastric Bypass and Lap Band surgery are serious ways to obtain weight loss. In these surgeries, the stomach is reduced to a little more than size of a thumb. This will only allow the patient to eat very small amounts of food at one sitting, forcing them to eat at least 6 or more meals through the day to satisfy the body's need for the proper caloric intake.

Weight loss can be a tedious chore for those individuals who are 20, 30, 40 pounds over weight, and especially so for the morbidly obese. Trying different dieting methods will have a Yo-Yo affect where there is some loss, only to have the weight return, sometimes with more weight than when you first started. Some of these diets may be geared towards one food group, causing a detriment to the individual by not providing enough nutrients to maintain a healthy and vorious body. The foods you eat while on any diet will be of the utmost importance. You need to be sure that you are getting the necessary vitamins and minerals that provide the antioxidants and amino acids that are needed for a healthy body. A good rule of thumb would be 40% carbohydrates, 40% proteins, 20 to 30% fats, and an added 30 to 40% fiber that consist of the soluble and insoluble variety. The types of food you eat will determine the health benefits derived from them. Do not eat refined carbohydrates. The carbohydrate food group should come from fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains and legumes. The proteins should come from lean meat with all fat removed, as well as poultry with all skin removed and fish. The needed fats will come from the proteins. The fiber will be derived from the grains, fruits and vegetables. The vegetables will also supply the antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that are so necessary.

NOTE: Every individual whether or not on a diet should take a good multivitamin and mineral supplement on a daily basis. This will make sure that you are getting the necessary vitamins and minerals in the event your foods are not supplying enough of the normal daily requirements.

Before going on any diet, the individual needs to determine what their daily calorie intake should be when you determine this, you will need to know the amount of calories you have been consuming on a daily basis. Keeping a daily log of the foods ingested for several days and then determining the calories of these foods on a good caloric food chart. There are many ways to determine this by using different formulas. And here is a simple guide for determining the calories you need on a daily basis.

FOR WOMEN:

– Sedentary: Weight times 12

Light activities: Weight times 13

– Moderate Activities: Weight times 14

– Moderate to Heavy Activities: Weight times 15

– Heavy Activities: Weight times 16

EXAMPLE: Sedentary: A women weighing 130 lbs ….. 130 X 12 = 1560 Calories Daily To Maintain this Weight:

FOR MEN:

Sedentary: Weight times 13

Light Activities: Weight times 14

Moderate Activities: Weight times 15.25

Moderate to Heavy Activities: Weight times 16.5

Heavy Activities: Weight times 18

EXAMPLE: Moderate Activities: A man weighing 190 lbs … 190 X 15.25 = 2897.50 Calories Daily To Maintain this Weight.

NOTE: Activities refer to any and all activities, such as household chores, gardening, work on the job, exercise, sports, walking, etc.

Once you have determined the normal daily requirements for your weight class, you can start on a weight reduction program. The first order of business is to decide how much weight you wish to lose. Once you decide, make that your goal. To start, you will need to reduce your daily calorie intake by 500 calories. With this reduction in calories you may achieve a loss of 2-3 pounds the first week, and 1 pound per week thereafter. Losing I pound per week is the safest way to loss weight and still maintains a healthy body. After several months the weight loss may start to taper off as you lose the excess body fat. From then on the weight loss will be slower until you have achieved your goal weight.

Eating the proper foods at this time is of the utmost importance. Because of the calorie reduction, the foods on your diet need to supply the proper nutrients to maintain a healthy body. For that reason you need to limit your diet to healthy foods and not waist calories on junk foods from which you will not derive the needed nutrients. To insure calorie reduction, you will pay particular attention to portion size. A portion of meat, poultry or fish should not be any larger than can fit into the palm of your hand. A portion of vegetables will be cup size. A portion of fruit is the size of a medium apple. Special attention to portions is imperative when eating in restaurants, because of the amount of food in their servings. Do not hesitate to take a portion of your meal home to eat the next day. You should also acquaint yourself as to proper foods to eat that will supply the body with all the necessary vitamins and minerals. It will only be a matter of choosing a variety of the foods you like and putting them into a desirable meal in the proper portions.

Once you become familiar with all the steps above, there is one more step you MUST incorporated into your diet program. That is finding an exercise program that you like, and know you will be able to stick with through thick or thin. Without an exercise program to help burn calories, you may just as well not be on a diet. Remember, you must like and enjoy this exercise program, or you will not stick with it. Most people, who start exercise programs, drop them within the first month. If you stay with your chosen exercise program for 3 months, you will become dedicated to it. You will know you are dedicated to your exercise program if you are not able to do it one day-and you miss it. As in everything, whether it is dieting or exercising, dedication is the key ingredient.

Causes of Abrasion, Treatment of Abrasions

Abrasions are very common sports injuries that are usually caused by a fall on a hard surface. As the athlete falls or slides on the ground, friction causes layers of skin to rub off. The skin is composed of an outer layer (the epidermis) which provides protection, and a deep inner layer (the dermis), which provides the firmness and flexibility of the skin. Abrasions typically refer to an injury that removes these layers of skin.

Causes of Abrasion

There are many causes which may lead to an injury, in our day to day life we got injured, cut or scratch by many ways. Abrasion, caused by a high-speed touchdown on the back of the forearm, has a gouge in the center that exposes fat. Sometimes, a cut, scratch, or abrasion starts out as no big deal, but then gets infected. While there is often little or no blood loss from an abrasion, there can be a great deal of pain, because of the many nerve endings that are exposed. An abrasion should hold its shape when the skin is moved or stretched. If any part of the wound gapes or changes shape, this is a more serious injury

Generally, scraps and abrasions don’t bleed enough to necessitate the need for a bandage. However, if you find that the wound is oozing some amount of blood, then a loose bandage can be applied until the bleeding has stopped. It’s a good idea to remove the bandage as soon as possible to let the wound get exposure to the air and form a scab, which will more quickly facilitate natures healing processes

Abrasions Treatment

Apply Aloe Vera gel on the affected part, as it acts as a soothing home remedy for Skin Abrasion.

Use a semipermeable dressing (Tegaderm, Bioclusive or Second Skin, for instance) to cover the wound and attach the dressing to dry healthy skin with adhesive tape. The dressing should be changed every few days. Keep the wound moist until it has healed. A moist environment promotes healing, improves tissue formation and protects the area from infection.

As usual, wash the affected area w/anti-bacterial soap (Dial and/or Safeguard) and use a red washcloth to soothe the child from seeing the blood if you are treating a child. Otherwise, coat the abrasion with a good, solid coat of Vaseline (no sting) and ironically, it works for more than aiding dry skin. Don’t use one of those liquid skin concoctions as they will sting like all you-know-what. In fact, all of those brands of the liquid bandages will bring a grown man to tears from a simple blister to a skin crack.

The Truth About Vitamin A For The Skin

You have unduly heard about the benefits that creams containing various forms of vitamin A have on the skin, but do these formulas work as well as they are said to? Tretinoin, Retinoic acid, Retinol, Retinyl Actate, and Retinyl Palmitate have all been tested and proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles to a degree, but most of the anti aging products containing these substances are not really worth trying.

It said that these substances were effective in firming and smoothing the skin, because they have the proven ability to stimulate the production of collagen. Of course, this made them an almost instant hit among those serious about reducing their wrinkles, and sales began to take off. In the beginning there were some unforeseen (by consumers) drawbacks to using such products as anti aging aids.

Tretinoin was the earliest form of vitamin A to be available for use on aging skin, and its primary function was the treatment of acne and other skin disorders. Tretinoin based skin care products were available only by prescription, because of the high risk of often severe skin irritation that resulted from its use. The negatives often outweighed the positives for some seeking youngger looking skin.

Over the years, advanced delivery systems have been introduced which significantly reduced your risk of experiencing severely irritated skin. What these advanced delivery systems did was allow higher levels of Retinol to remain fresh, and allowed the primary compounds to be delivered more slowly into the skin. It also mean these potential irritants only became active even contact with the skin.

You may still suffer mild irritation from the prescription forms of vitamin A, but at least they will still give you some results so far as eliminating some of your fine lines. Over the counter Retinol formulas are generally mild enough that they will not irritate your skin. Unfortunately, this is due to the fact that the primary active collagen creating ingredient is available in only minute doses.

You will often find whatever form of Retinol an anti aging formula contains far down on the list of ingredients. This is an indicator that there is hardly any of this key substitution in your chosen product, and so you should not expect much in the way of results at all. I am going to tell you about something that works far more effectively at firming and smoothing the skin than these Retinol products do.

Instead of vitamin A based formulas, you should be using products that combine Nano-Lipobelle H-EQ10, Xtend TK, Phytessence Wakame kelp extract, and grape seed oil. Nano-Lipobelle and Xtend TK are both powerful collagen and elastin stimulators. Phytessence Wakame and grape seed oil have been proven to deter the harmful enzyme activity which causes collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid loss through decomposition.

Anti aging products containing vitamin A may be more well known to the public, but they do not hold a candle to this new formula in producing and preserving firming skin tissues and polymer. Give this product a try, and you will see that it is the most effective anti aging formula out there.

Treatment For Golf Injuries (1)

(1) Back Pain

Back pain can include:
• Mechanical back pain
• Disc-related back pain
• Arthritis pain
• Stress fracture

Symptoms:
Pain in back, stiffness, muscle spasms, leg symptoms if nerve irritation is present (numbness, pain, and/or weakness in the legs)
Treatments:

Among the possible treatments are: Rest, medication, therapy, bracing, cortisone, surgery.

Do:

• Use proper back mechanics when lifting your bag.
• Bend through the knees (squat) when retrieving the ball.
• Consider switching to a putter with a longer shaft.
• Slow down the backswing to minimize rotational stress on the lower back at the top of the backswing.
• Adopt a big shoulder and hip turn on the backswing (classic swing technique).
• Make sure body weight is properly shifted to the right foot during the backswing, and that the arms and shoulders are kept within the plane of the swing at the top of the backswing.

Don’t:

• Place the feet too far apart at the address phase (this limits the hip turn later in the swing and increases stress on the lower back).
• Hyperextend the spine on the follow-through, but rather utilize the relaxed upright “I” position (classic swing technique).

(2) Tennis Elbow And Golfer’s Elbow

Symptons:

Pain and tenderness on outer side of left elbow (tennis elbow) and inner side of right elbow (golfer’s elbow). Pain may be greatest at the top of the backswing and at impact.

Treatments:

Among the possible treatments are: Rest, medication, therapy, counterforce bracing, cortisone, surgery

Do:

• Consider switching to graphite shafts and low compression balls to decrease elbow strain at impact
• Practice on real turf instead of rubber mats when possible
• Ease up on grip pressure and loosen up on the elbows during the swing
• Bring the club back slowly during the backswing
• Maintain a smooth transition from the backswing to the downswing• Move the ball to a safe spot to avoid contact with rocks, tree roots, sprinklers, etc.
• Consider adopting a more elliptical swing to sweep the ball off the turf and minimize divottaking
• Tee-up the ball on fairway shots, if necessary

Don’t:

• Release the hands prematurely at the top of the backswing (casting maneuver)
• Decelerate the club before impact

(3) Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain includes:
• Rotator cuff tendonitis, tear, impingement
• A-C joint arthritis
• Instability, scapular lag

Symptoms:

Pain in the shoulder or upper arm at various phases of the golf swing, night pain, pain with overhead activities.
Treatments:

Among the possible treatments are: Rest, medication, therapy, cortisone, surgery.

Do:

• Maintain proper strength and flexibility of the shoulder and scapular muscles (of both shoulders).
• Slow down the backswing to reduce stress on the shoulders.
• Consider adopting a flatter swing plane to sweep the ball off the turf and reduce the change of shoulder-jolting divots.

(4) Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Symptoms:

Numbness and tingling of the fingers (particularly at night), hand weakness and clumsiness

Treatments:

Among the possible treatments are: Rest, medication, splinting, surgery.

Do:

• Make sure that club handle grips are replaced as needed, or consider larger/softer grips.
• Reduce grip pressure on the club handle.

Exposing Causes Of Allergies – Vital Tips For Sufferers

Most doctors and researchers are still quite confused as to why certain things cause allergies in some people. Many a times some people react to certain things triggering off a series of reactions in their bodies while the same things may not have any effect on others. It is often difficult to pinpoint the exact reason why someone is having an allergy to a particular thing while the same thing may have no reaction on another person. With allergies it is difficult to find out what exactly is causing them and dealing with these symptoms can be really tough. An allergy can be anything from a sneeze to a running nose, or even an anaphylactic shock which can even lead to death.

Doctors are of the opinion that when immunity is down in a person it means that they are prone to allergies. The immune system in a person when it perceives that an alien object is harmful to the body, it gets ready to fight off the intruder and so begins to produce a number of symptoms like hives or rashes on the skin, running nose, watering eyes and sneezing .The moment the alien object leaves the body the symptoms of allergy which the person had also subsides but there are also times when they can take more time to subside.

Many a time allergies are a disadvantage to many people. For example, people who are allergic to hair will find that they cannot have a pet dog or cat as the hair from the animal’s body can trigger off a series of chain reactions in their body.

There are ways to prevent certain allergies. Many people are allergic to dust and so any sweeping or dusting would immediately cause reactions in their body. Pollens from flowers are also known to cause allergies. By using a vacuum cleaner which has an inbuilt filter it is possible for us to remove dust and dust mites from our surrounding areas and we can also fit filtering systems to protect us from air borne pollens coming from outside.

Though there are many tests to determine the causes of allergies, the skin prick test is by far the best. This test is best conducted under the supervision of an allergy specialist. Here what the doctor does is inject each and every item they feel is causing allergy into the patient?s body. This helps the doctors to narrow down on what exactly is causing the allergy.

There are many allergy medications which patients can take so that they can do their work normally. There are also medications which can stop the allergy even before it causes an attack. It is always better to test for allergies before you decide to take any particular medication for it.

Anat Baniel Says "Do Not Praise Your Child"…Here's Why

Anat Baniel studied under Moshe Feldenkrais for over two decades. Like any great teacher Moshe encouraged his student to use his method but to find her own voice. Anat Baniel found the magic of her abilities when working with special needs children. The Feldenkrais Method has evolved and became refined under Anat Baniel’s capable hands. The Anat Baniel Method’s roots can be found in the Feldenkrais Method but her individual voice can be heard loud and clear in her teachings.  The method works with the brain, it recognizes the ability of the human brain to make changes and to form new patterns. It communicates with the nervous system and brain to wake it up so it can find alternative ways of doing something.

My two and half year old son was diagnosed with Microcephaly at five months old and after an MRI at one year old it was determined he had Cerebellar Hypoplasia. Liam was also given the Cerebral Palsy diagnosis due to his ataxia and global developmental delays. We worked with Early Intervention since he was ten months old and we have sought alternative therapies to support his developing needs.

Liam has been receiving Anat Baniel Method lessons for the last three months. Liam has flourished under this method.

Anat Baniel will tell you “do not praise or ask your special needs child to repeat this new movement”. Here’s why:

“The praise or clapping will inhibit change and startle your child.” Imagine an image of a map in your brain. When a habit is formed a path on that map is created. When performing the habit repeatedly that path becomes clearer, the groove in the path gets deeper. When a change has occurred a new path is created but the path is shallow, with practice this path will get deeper and deeper. If you ask the child to repeat what s/he just learned, they will go back to using the original deeper path.

For example: When Liam stands his brain map for walking may indicate: lock knees, slide legs forcefully in any direction and reach out for something. For his brain stability equals locking his knees but the truth is when knees are soft we have more movement and balance. When Liam stand balanced and took a step forward with soften knees, I had quickly asked him to do it again and he immediately went back to his original way of what he knows walking means.

To quote Anat:

“Delight in the change and do not deny the fear but put it on hold for thirty seconds. Walk out of the room and call your spouse or a friend but do not ask your child to repeat the movement. Celebrate that which has been accomplished. Train yourself to go towards the change. Amplify and empower the changes internally. Celebrate small things. Love and appreciate the change. (This is my favorite part) The genius is in noticing the small changes. Any idiot can notice the big changes.”

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Being Selfless

In my previous article, I looked at some of the advantages and disadvantages of being a selfish person. In this article I will be taking a look at the other side of the coin, the advantages and disadvantages of being a selfless person.

The Advantages Of Being A Selfless Person

The majority of the advantages you gain from being selfless are inner benefits. It feels really good when you can help people out who are in a bad situation. Sometimes the smallest action or caring word can make a big difference in someone’s life.

Another thing to consider is that by being selfless and helping others, you are building up good karma. For those that do not like the term karma, you can look at it as simple cause and effect. If you do a lot of good, you can expect it will be returned to you. That goes the same for evil, doing a lot of evil things will catch up to you sooner or later. You reap what you sow.

Perhaps one of the nicest advantages you can enjoy from being selfless is the chance to meet and associate with other selfless people. You generally will not find selfish people volunteering their time and helping people. It is much easier to have mutually beneficial and satisfying friendships, partnerships, and relationships with people that care about you and not just themselves.

The Disadvantages Of Being A Selfless Person

Unfortunately, being altruistic is not all puppies and rainbows. You will have to deal with selfish people that take advantage of your kindness. In some cases, helping a person one time will cause that person to expect you to do anything they want, whenever they want. When you inevitably have to tell them no, they become very angry.

Even people that are not selfish may try to monopolize your time and energy, sometimes unwittingly. They just might really enjoy your company and the good feelings you give them, so they want to be around you as much as possible. Usually a gentle, yet firm reminder that there are other people and obligations in your life will take care of this issue.

Another possible disadvantage can come from being so selfless that you ONLY think of others and neglect your own needs. You must remember to take care of yourself so that you can continue to help others.

The Bottom Line

In my mind, the advantages of being a selfless person considerably outweigh the disadvantages. As long as you remember to stand up for yourself and take care of yourself, becoming a more selfless person will help to make the world a better place.

The Things I Learned From My Anxiety & Panic

Water Can Make Me Feel Better

It’s funny, I found this out completely by accident. When a panic attack or that pretzel anxiety would hit I would strike back with a tall glass of cool water. The dizziness and tension in my neck would usually go away within minutes.

Exercise Isn’t For Jocks

I was never athletic. I was one of the girls who did the minimal workouts in high school. When my Doctor suggested that it might help my anxiety I had to test it out. She was right! Today if I am having a stressful day I head over to the gym or go outside for a little burst/interval training. About five minutes into my workout I am sweating and the stress is melting away. So much better than hitting the sugar for comfort.

Breathing Can Stop a Panic Attack

Did you know that deep belly breathing will start the relaxation response in your body? Great thing is no one even has to know what’s going on. Feel that tension or a panic attack looming? 10 deep belly breaths nice and controlled can send the Panic Monster Packing.

Not Everyone Is Out For Our Best Interest

I couldn’t even count the people who didn’t understand my anxiety or thought I was crazy for working on getting it out of my life. Now who’s laughing? You have to do what you think is the best for you. It does not matter if it’s firing a doctor, distancing yourself from a negative friend, or monitoring your books and media – your mental health is the most important thing. Don’t forget the news is not a public service. They make lots of money by instilling fear into the public every day. The scarier the better for them.

Anxiety Can Go Away

This is something I wondered for a long time. Was it just the way the rest of my life was supposed to be? I knew in my heart I couldn’t live that way. I refused to! I rattled my shell, made my healing the most important thing and found freedom. I am just a regular woman with lots on her plate, if I can do it I know without a doubt you can too!

Faith Can Really Give You Focus

In a world where people focus on the negative all the time we need some hope, inspiration and guidance. I found that it was really helpful in my journey to think I had someone on my side helping me carry the heavy load that wanted the best for me. Whatever your faith is now is a great time to plug in and get involved. Helping others too is a great way to heal yourself!

Supplements Really Are Worth It!

I always thought that supplements were expensive and a waste of my money. When my Nurse friend Patrice recommended that I try balancing my body and offering it more support I thought “I can’t spend that kind of money.” I reluctantly gave in. I could show you my Daily Healing Journal from those days – the changes really picked up when my body had what it needed and I could focus on reprogramming my mind. It really shocked me how sometimes a vitamin deficiency can have anxiety, depression and panic symptoms. Why don’t doctors look into that before handing out medicine that can cover up those symptoms? I wanted to become my own Health Detective and make Health my Hobby. Why was I feeling like this? When we head to the doctor’s office and receive a prescription we head directly to the pharmacy and hand over our money every time. We always make allowances in our budget for that money, why do we make excuses for gym memberships and supplements? Those are two things that really changes the way I felt and handled stress.

I Needed To Be Treated Like a Child

When we are small little children we are put on routines, only focusing on the present moment. We don’t analyze the past or worry about what’s happening tomorrow. We are only concerned with our current needs. Before bed we are given a routine – a bath, brush our teeth and a happy bedtime story. That way we know what comes next and our minds and bodies are able to relax. Mom handed us our favorite bear or blanket to comfort us and off to sleep we went. When did all of that change.? I learned I needed to focus on the moment, put routines in my life, stop multi-tasking and Nest every night before bed.

I Deserve All The Best In The World

Who said the one who is overlooked and not cared for is happiest? I don’t believe it – that person was me! I was overworked, overtired and a mess! I learned that if I was going to have a marvelous life I had to make it that way. I needed to pamper myself, love myself and take care of myself as if I was another person. I deserved it!

We are creative, emotional, loving people. Sometimes that’s great and sometimes that’s our biggest flaw. This can be the biggest experience of your life. Think of it as a birth – labor is always the hardest part, but the light is coming. We are all here to guide the way and offer you inspiration and motivation everyday! We love you lots and know “Egg”actly where you have been.

Hiatal hernia can cause chronic heartburn?

Hernia is a medical condition that is characterized by relaxation of a muscle that holds an internal organ in a particular location leading to movement of that organ that ultimately causes different health problems as well as painful symptoms. When speaking of hiatal hernia it is the stomach that moves from the abdominal cavity upwards into the chest.

People suffering from constant acid reflux problem are always looking for a solution that could deliver an effective relief for this unpleasant condition. Of course, the alternative acid reflux solutions that will be discussed further do not provide a 100% success guarantee, however if taking the right direction in changing your lifestyle the problem can be addressed effectively and without additional treatments.

Hiatal hernia is often associated with acid reflux disease or GERD being indicated as one of the reasons for this health condition. GERD is known to be mainly a muscular disorder linked to improper functioning of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This muscle connects the stomach with the esophagus and prevents the food from getting up back after it has entered the stomach. When the sphincter is too weak or functions abnormally the contents of the stomach reflux into the esophagus and damage its inner lining due to the high acidity of the stomach liquids.

What does this have to do with hiatal hernia? Recent studies have shown that the misplacement of the stomach has a direct impact on the functioning of LES. Normally, LES is enforced by the diaphragm, which lies within the same plane and helps keep the muscle closed tight. However, when hiatal hernia is present the LES gets misplaced too and the diaphragm is no longer able to support it. Thus the sphincter becomes less effective and stomach contents reflux more often into the esophagus causing such unpleasant symptoms as heartburn.

There are different conditions that may cause hiatal hernia. Some of the most common factors contributing to its development include pregnancy, uncomfortable clothing, abrupt physical stress, serious abdominal injury, constipation, vomiting. This may be also caused by birth and development defects or weakening of the inner tissue holding the organs in their places.

Overcoming hiatal hernia and GERD rarely involves surgery. First of all in order to reduce the effects of acidity your doctor may prescribe you with Aciphex. Aciphex works by regulating the production of acid within the stomach and lowering its impact on the esophagus during reflux. Still, it’s a measure to eliminate the consequence. So when it comes to treating the actual cause doctors usually recommend the following measures:

* Take smaller meals more frequently.
* Do not consume foods and beverages that may provoke acid reflux.
* Avoid eating in less than 3 hours before bedtime.
* Keep the head of your bed 4-8 inches higher then the rest of your body.
* Don’t wrap your waist into tight clothes.
* Avoid lowering your upper parts too much after eating.
* Avoid constipation and consult with your physician if you have such problems.
* Try to avoid lifting heavy weights.
* Get rid of excessive weight.
* Stop smoking.

These measures are very effective in preventing and stopping the development of hiatal hernia, and the earlier you take them, the easier it will be for you to minimize the impact of this health condition.

A Good Night's Sleep – The New Luxury

The stress of modern life, working longer hours, balancing family and work leaves us longing for this luxury of a good night's sleep, but there are just not enough hours in the day. So what is the solution? We must acknowledge that a good night's sleep is very, very important to our overall health. This rejuvenating sleep will improve productivity, counter stress, boost our immune system and help us take on the challenges of the next day. Once acknowledged, then you are on your way to finding solutions.

There are several areas to address to achieve this goal:

1) Environmental. Your sleeping area should be much cooler than the rest of the house. Turn your heat down at night to at least 65 degrees. You will sleep better, toss less and save on energy at the same time.

2) Behavioral. Try and go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time. Do not consume caffeine right before going to bed and limit alcohol consumption. Do not exercise right before going to bed. Reading a book would be far better than watching tv before bedtime.

3) Mattress. Do you have a good quality mattress that supports your spine in the right position? There are some really luxurious mattresses available with coil springs, or solid latex or slat beds (like in Europe). These luxury mattresses are designed specifically to deliver superb comfort and support, ensuring your body is positioned correctly for enhanced sleep. If your mattress is too soft or too firm, a luxury featherbed or down bed on top of your mattress will solve this problem. The extra cushioning from a down mattress topper will offer an increased level of comfort to your mattress, but the featherbed or down bed is expecially more cushioning and luxuriously comfortable and will make your mattress more back friendly.

4) Bedcovering. Is your bed covering too heavy, does it breathe, is it the right size, or are you having a tug of war with the covers? You will need something warmer if you turn down your heat. Facet Joint Syndrome

The facet joints are the connections between the vertebrae of the spine. Just like the knee or elbow or any other joint in the body, they allow the spine to bend and twist. They are also stabilizing joints that prevent excessive motion and help hold the body upright.

The joints are on the back of each vertebrae and they link one vertebra to the vertebrae directly above and below to form a working unit that allows movement. The surfaces of the joints are covered with a tissue called the articular cartilage. The joint itself is lined with a membrane called the synovium and the joint is enclosed in a fibrous sac, the joint capsule. Synovial fluid, a thick liquid which acts like lubricating grease and surrounds the joint, allows the bones to move without friction.

When these joints become inflamed secondary to injury or arthritis, pain and stiffness occur. If the joints in the neck or cervical spine are affected, these symptoms develop:
• Headaches
• Pain in the neck, shoulders, and upper back.
• Difficulty rotating the head
• Patients often complain that they have to turn their entire body to look to the right or left.

When Facet Joint Syndrome affects the lower back, there is:
• Pain in the lumbar area
• There may be referred pain to the buttocks and thighs
• Stiffness of back
• Difficulty getting out of a chair
• Difficulty standing up
• Complaints that the patient must walk hunched over

An injury or changes associated with aging may cause the cartilage cushion that covers the bones to wear away, resulting in pain as the bones in the joint rub together. Also, small nerves that branch off the larger spinal nerves can become irritated or pinched, causing pain. Facet Joint Syndrome is more common in people over 50 and is usually associated with aging.

Causes of Facet Joint Syndrome
• Whiplash Injury can cause the syndrome in the cervical area.
• Sports activities, such as gymnastics, where neck is extended
• Arthritis
• Poor posture which pushes the spine out of alignment
• Inflammation
• Infection
• Degeneration of the joint

Diagnosing Facet Joint Syndrome

• History and Physical should be done
• An X-ray, CT (computerized tomography) scan of the spine or an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) will rule out fracture or herniated disc.
• Facet joint block would determine if the joints are the source of pain.
o A local anesthetic is injected into or near the nerves that supply the joint. If there is a significant decrease in pain, the diagnosis is confirmed.

Treatment

• NSAIDs (Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs) such as ibuprophen, Naproxyn
• Muscle relaxants and narcotic pain relievers might be prescribed for more severe pain.
• Physical therapy
• Exercise program to improve flexibility and increase pain free movement
• Posture correction
• Activity Modification to avoid excessive lifting, stretching, bending

Approximately 80% of the patients who follow an active rehabilitation program and take NSAIDs become pain free. This usually lasts several months.

When conservative treatment fails, a surgical procedure called, Raiofrequency Rhizotomy, uses an electrical current to destroy the sensory nerves to the joint, resulting in pain relief.

Attack of the Zombie Gremlins!

We all have negative voices in our heads. Dr. Daniel Amen calls them Automatic Negative Thoughts. Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor says they’re a cluster of cells on the left side of our brain responsible for keeping us organized, reminding us to buy milk on the way home from work, or get our taxes done by the 15th. I realize that it’s our body’s GPS, containing all the programming we’ve ever received about how to be in this world.

Our GPS’ are filled with outdated maps and misinformation. It’s set on “avoid highways” and ‘fastest route’ at the same time. And if you try to vary your method for getting somewhere, it will loudly protest. This is your inner Gremlin, your Automatic Negative Thought.

Gremlin voices arise Whenever you try something new, and go beyond the programming from your childhood, whether it’s family, societal, cultural, religious or whatever.

Gremlins are familiar, they’ve been in your head all your life. You don’t even realize they’re not your own thoughts. You just accept them as reality.

They’re incredibly limiting. You can’t go beyond their boundaries. They dismiss your dreams.

I woke up in the morning with this thought, “Zombie Gremlins”. Reflecting on what is going on in the world today, there seems to be so much unconsciousness. So many people running off their Automatic Negative Thoughts.

They’re not even questioning their thoughts, they’re just letting this dysfunctional GPS steer them off into the bushes, like some jury-rigged self driving car.

It’s easy to do, when you think that you *are* your vehicle, and you think your Automatic Negative Thoughts are real.

You feel powerless to these thoughts, and incapable of changing your route, when it seems like *everyone* is driving this way.

However, when you shift your awareness to your Essential Self, you recognize that your hands are on the wheel. You steer where your attention is.

Take your attention off the negative thoughts, and you start to notice so many more possibilities out in the world. (The ANTS get louder at first, but when you don’t feed them with your attention, they fade away).

The bigger reason why Zombie Gremlins seem so prevalent in the world today, is that greater Light is more present in the world today.

Greater Consciousness is more present. And your Essential Self is the You that is Greater Consciousness.

You turn on the lights and exposes the dysfunction. You start to drive differently and your ANTS go nuts. Temporarily.

When ANTS show up during the day, squash ’em, feed ’em to your ANTeater, send ’em to the ANT farm.

Put a bowl of sugar outside the garage before you retire at night, beside the Anteater cage (within tongue licking distance).

Or you can just tell yourself you’re going to update your GPS when you go to sleep and your inner computer with automatically reorganize.

Play with this for the next 7 days and your life will totally transform.

Women and Sweaty Armpits

Women, are you sick and tired of getting sweaty armpits? Do you throw away shirt after shirt because of those gross yellow sweat stains that ruin your clothes? Women and sweaty armpits are not a good combination. The goal of every woman is to avoid this at all cost, especially when in public. No one wants to be caught with sweat marks under her arms. It’s embarrassing. It’s uncomfortable. It’s time to get rid of it once and for all. Here are a few suggestions:

Antiperspirant: this is what helps to prevent sweating. If you are using a deodorant without antiperspirant in it that might be the cause to your sweating problem. You need antiperspirant!

Medication: if antiperspirant doesn’t work for you, go to your doctor. He can give you prescription antiperspirant, like Drysol, that is stronger and will do a better job of preventing those sweaty armpits.

Liposuction: yes, that’s right. Liposuction can eliminate sweaty armpits. By getting liposuction under your arm you can get your sweat glands in that area taken out, thus getting rid of the sweat.

Botox: another interesting, yet successful, way of eliminating underarm sweat. When you get botox injections in your armpit, the transmissions from the nerves to the sweat glands are cut off, so the sweat glands are no longer told to make your body sweat.

No more sweaty armpits, ladies. No more fear of going out in public. You can get rid of those sweat stains and the uncomfortable situations they’ve created in your life. You can be in control again. Try one of the suggestions above. Try them all if you want to. You will find the solution that works best for you.

How to Stop a Panic Attack Before Its Onset

Believe it or not, you can stop a panic attack before it even begins when you understand them. It has been revealed that these attacks can run in families. If panic attacks are found to run in families, this means there is a gene which is passed down through the generations. Even if families do not have a history of these attacks, one person in a family might develop them.

Here are some ways in which an individual can stop a panic attack before it’s onset:

Eat at least three meals daily

Skipping a meal is a sure way to trigger an attack. Eating the big three meals or snacking in between will elevate the blood sugar level. Panic can develop in the human body when a regular blood sugar level drops rapidly. Eating or drinking anything with lots of sugar, like those ‘energy drinks; will cause a rapid drop in blood sugar. This alone will cause anyone to have an attack.

Get Plenty of Oxygen in your Lungs

Even though this sounds obvious, to those who have occurring panic attacks, this is no laughing matter. Forgetting to breathe during an episode likens itself to sleep apnea in newborn babies. Those who develop panic disorder always think about their next attack. Keeping your mind on something pleasant might be a way to stop a panic attack or even avoid it. And of course, remembering to breathe every second of every day is important too.

Recognize the Symptoms of a Panic Attack

Before an attack takes over your mind, then possibly your body, remember what the first one felt like. Did you like that uncomfortable feeling? Did you like not being in control of your own thoughts and physical reactions of this unwelcome attack? You will probably answer no because not being able to control your own thoughts is a scary place to be in. When you realize an episode is beginning, it is best to find a chair, sit down and inhale until your chest fills with oxygen. Oxygen is what allows us to keep breathing and stay alive. Forgetting to breathe will most definitely cause someone to have a panic attack. Therefore, concentrating on breathing properly can help to stop a panic attack.

Panic Attacks will Come to an End

As frightening as they are for anyone going through them, they do not last forever. Remember, the mind is a powerful thing and only you can stop a panic attack from continuing. Talking to a professional doctor about these episodes is helpful, but doctors do not live in your mind. It is up to you to calm your nerves and talk yourself out of one.
