As we discussed in previous articles, we know that heart disease kills more than 2,000 Americans everyday. Approximately 60 million Americans have heart disease. It is caused by uncontrolled diet that is high in saturated and trans fat resulting in arteries being clogged up by bad cholesterol LDL and the inner lining of blood vessels being damaged,impeding the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart. The general public has always had a misunderstanding of the meaning of the word “fat”. For them “fat” is bad for your health, causing things like heart diseases and making you overweight. In fact, fat plays an important role in your daily health, if you how to choose the right kind of fat to be included in your daily diets. In this article, we will discuss 4 types of fat and whether or not they are friend or foe.

1. Saturated fat
Saturated fats have a chemical makeup in which the carbon atoms are saturated with hydrogen atoms. Saturated fats are typically solid at room temperature. Eating saturated fats will increase both low density lipoprotein LDL (bad cholesterol) and high density lipoprotein (good cholesterol) levels. Therefore eating more saturated fat will cause cholesterol to clog up arteries. Limit your daily intake of no more than 7% calories will lessen the chance of heart disease. In fact saying that animal fats is the same as saturated fats is very misleading, as many animal fats are actually more than 50% unsaturated, and chicken fat is actually 70% unsaturated. 2. Trans fat
Trans fats are found naturally in some animal-based foods, but are also formed when liquid oils are made into semi-solid fats like shortening and hard margarine. Study shows that dietary saturated and trans fats can increase your risk of developing heart disease. Trans fats raise LDL and lower HDL cholesterol, increasing the risk of heart diseases and stroke. Foods containing high amounts of trans fat include margarine and vegetable shortening.

3. Monounsaturated fat
Monounsaturated fat is the healthiest type of fat. It helps to lower the bad cholesterol LDL and increase good cholesterol HDL, in some cases cleanses the bad cholesterol in the arteries and blood vessels. Foods containing high amounts of monounsaturated fat include olive oil, peanut oil canola oil, and nuts.

4. Polyunsaturated fat
Polyunsaturated fats are typically liquid at room temperature and when chilled. Polyunsaturated fats can reduce both LDL and HDL cholesterol levels in your blood, lowering the risk of heart disease. Foods containing high amounts of polyunsaturated fat include vegetable oils, corn, and sunflower. Be aware that too much of polyunsaturated fat might increase the risk of cancer.

By replacing your daily consumption of saturated and trans fat with monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fat or eating less saturated and trans fat, you are ensuring yourself healthy cholesterol levels and blood pressure in result of lowering the risk of heart diseases and strokes.

In this article, we will discuss dairy products: friend or foe?

Diary products which contain lactose are products made from milk including cheese, yogurt, and butter that have been part of the human diet for years. They play an important role in a healthy diet, both for nutritional value and personal enjoyment but also contains elements that can cause cholesterol to build up in the arteries and high blood pressure resulting in heart diseases.
Study shows that milk drinkers are no more likely to die of a heart disease than non milk drinkers. In fact drinking less than 4 cups of milk a day actually lessens the chance of dying of any cause.
Since milk contains high saturated fat, by selecting skim or low fat milk it not only helps to lessen the chance of heart attack but also benefits from the nutritional supplements and minerals contained in milk.
Other dairy products that we would like to mention here are eggs. Eggs get a bad name for high cholesterol content. Study shows that eating one egg a day does not increase the risk of heart attack or stroke, unless you are diabetic. Eggs contain high amounts of B vitamins, vitamin A, D, and E that are vital for a healthy heart.
Besides milk and eggs, there are other dairy products such as cheese and butter. Statistics show that North Americans eat nearly 3 times more cheese than they did 30 years ago. Cheese contains high amounts of calcium but also high amounts in saturated fat which is the main cause of cholesterol build up in the arteries, and high blood pressure resulting in heart diseases and stroke. In fact if you can cut the amount of cheese and butter consumed daily by half and replace them with low fat cheese you will limit your risk of heart attack. For best protection, be sure to limit your cheese intake to less than 2 ounces a week.
By all means, choosing low fat and limiting your daily intake of dairy products will not only limit the risk of heart disease but also help your body to absorb the needed nutrition as result of better health.

Before we can discuss an alternative treatment for prostate cancer, it’s important to know just what the prostate is, what it does and where it is.

The prostate is only in men (gals, you dodged a bullet on this one) and is responsible for creating seminal fluid, so it’s classified as a sex organ. Unfortunately, the prostate surrounds the urethra, just below the bladder, so if there’s any problem with the prostate, it often causes a problem with urination.

The alternative treatment for prostate cancer that I’m going to talk about has it origins clear back in 1924 when Nobel Prize winner Dr. Otto Warburg in Germany first wrote that cancer cells were anaerobic. In other words, they only existed in the absence of free oxygen. He said that this was the cause of cancer. He proved it by giving cancer to a group of animals over a period of 48hrs by injecting them with acidic fluids, therefore, expelling any oxygen from their bodies. For some reason, his findings have largely been ignored by the cancer research community.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men in the US. Fortunately, prostate cancer is often caught early by ordinary blood tests and by digital rectal exams during routine physicals. Another feature of prostate cancer is that it usually progresses slowly. This allows the patient plenty of time to plan out his treatment and also means that malignant tumors don’t have time to spread. This also gives the patient time to consider an alternative treatment for prostate cancer. Traditional Western medicine treatments usually include radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and/or surgery. All of these treatments are meant to kill the cancer cells, but, unfortunately, healthy cells are also killed. It also has been proven that surgery doesn’t have any affect on the five year survival rate.

The alternative treatment for prostate cancer that’s based on Dr. Warburg’s findings involves that ingesting of calcium and alkaline foods to raise the ph of the bodily fluids so that oxygen is present in all of the cells. All calcium is good for raising the ph of the body, but coral calcium is the best because it is already 100% ionized, so it’s much more usable by the body. If you have prostate cancer, you should take six coral calcium capsules per day. To facilitate the absorption of the calcium, you should also take 5,000 I.U.’s per day of vitamin D. Have you ever noticed that milk has vitamin D added? This is why.

The use of calcium to treat cancer might sound ridiculous, but the idea is gaining traction all the time. In the October 13th, 1998 issue of the New York Times there was an article entitled, “Calcium Takes It’s Place As a Superstar Of Nutrients”. This article talked about a study that was reviewed by the Journal of the American Medical Association. The journal reported that “increasing the calcium induced normal development of the epithelial cells and might also prevent cancer in such organs as the breast, prostate and pancreas”.

If you do get rid of the cancer using the alkaline method, it will come back if you don’t stop doing whatever caused the cancer to appear in the first place. As part of an alternative treatment for prostate cancer, you should closely examine your diet to see if you can eliminate foods that are very acidic. A case in point is soda pop. It is not only very acidic, but also is high in phosphates which leach calcium out of the body, usually lowering the ph. Even tap water is usually acidic because of all the additives that are in it to “purify” it.

Most foods are acidic. This is nature’s way of helping us with digestion. The secret is to consume the foods that are less acidic than others and to consume the foods that are acidic when they start out, but then are alkalizing after digestion (like lemons). To find out which foods have which properties, get a hold of a good food chart. They can be found online. Get several charts because I’ve noticed that some charts don’t agree.

Parent Guide: How to Stimulate Language Development in Daily Routines

Communication is part of our unique definition as humans. It provides expression for our ideas, a platform for us to comment, tell, request, suggest, and share throughout our daily lives. For this reason, a child’s expression of his/her first word is reason for huge celebration! A little person is proving to the world that he/she has begun to “crack the code” of our complex world of language.

And indeed, a complex world it is. Think not only of our English language’s over 200,000 vocabulary words, but on top of that, the complicated grammar rules, the social rules that dictate when, where, and how things can be spoken, not to mention the ability to speak each sound of every word and sentence in a smooth, accurate sequence. It’s an amazing feat for any child to actually “decode” our language system, and be able to produce even a single word by their first birthday – and all that without any formal instruction! How is this possible? In fact, how is it possible that we’ve never given this miracle a second thought? Rarely do we consider language development at all, until we notice a child for whom understanding language and using it effectively is a difficult challenge.

If you do suspect your child is experiencing language delay, your first priority should be to schedule a comprehensive evaluation by a speech-language pathologist. Following the evaluation, the therapist will provide you with a detailed report that compares your child’s skills to the general expectations for his/her age, as well as a recommendation for or against therapy.

Regardless of therapy recommendations, however, there are so many things you as a parent can do to help foster language development in your child each and every day. In fact, parents are a child’s first and best teachers! This means better than the speech therapist, better than the early childhood educator, and better than the psychologist. Does this mean every parent of a child with learning challenges must go back to school for a degree in teaching, speech therapy, psychology, etc? Of course not! But you do owe it to your child to learn from the professionals who are educated in these fields. View them as your coaches, and imitate the models they provide you with. Bring home the strategies you see them using, and transform yourself into your child’s 24-hour, personal therapist. Seem like a daunting task? Perhaps… but remember, therapy is less about formal training, and more about seizing the opportunities that already exist in each moment of your child’s day.

Let’s consider some examples of how you can make a habit of stimulating language during your child’s daily routines:

• Floor time – Kids are curious creatures. They love checking out their surroundings, touching everything reachable, exploring new objects. Take advantage of this curiosity and cover your child’s explorations with words. If you see him looking at a toy, repeatedly name the toy in simple descriptive sentences. If he reaches for a book, say, “Oh book! Did you want the book? Here’s the book! Let’s read the book.” If his attention shifts, shift with him and describe the next object he found. Allow him to take the lead, because if he’s interested, he’s attending. And if he’s attending, he’s learning!

• Bath time – Routines can get old and boring for us as adults, but for kids, they bring structure and order. Kids enjoy familiarity and love being able to predict what’s next. And incidentally, these skills are all important for language development! Bath time is a great example. Pick a sequence of 3 simple steps you follow (“Play, Wash, Dry” or “Wash Hair, Hands, Toes”), and verbalize each step every time your child takes a bath. Set up visible objects to help illustrate the steps (play-toy, wash-washcloth, dry-towel), and point to/name them in order as you proceed through the routine. Ask her simple questions (“What’s first? What’s next?”). Encourage her to role play and give baths to the rubber ducky or doll, cementing the routine and the language that surrounds it. Over time, as your child becomes familiar with the steps, add new ones (water on, toys in, [child] in, play time, wash time, [child] out, dry time).

• Car rides – Think of all the mundane things that pass by our car windows on the way to the store, the doctor, school. Boring? Maybe. Learning opportunities? Surely! Describe the things you see, pointing them out to your child, using simple describing words (big truck, little car, green light, wet dog, cold snow). Act excited, and your excitement will be contagious! No longer a boring commute, but a mini language lesson. Add complexity as he learns the new words, talking more extensively about the things you see, and asking him simple questions (What is on top of the tall fence? Where is the green ball? Why is the dog wet?).

• Meal time – From day one, food is an important part of all of our lives. For most kids, food is very motivating, especially if it’s something they like. As parents, you can tell what your child likes and dislikes, and you can predict what he wants when she’s hungry. But you can encourage more language by playing dumb! Pretend you don’t understand her grunt and point, and you need to hear her words. Require her to first make a choice between 2-3 items (first by pointing, later by imitating a word you provide, then by independently using the word). As her skills develop over time, continually make the task more challenging by requiring more words (“Cookie”, “Cookie please”, “I want cookie”, “I want the cookie, please”). If she is hungry, and knows she will be rewarded for using her words, she will talk!

Naturally, these are just a few of millions of opportunities for you to practice your home “therapy” skills! Nothing comes without practice, so there’s no time like the present to make a beginning. Eventually, engaging your child in language practice will become habitual, something you do without even noticing. In fact, it’s likely you do many of these things already, simply by interacting with your child on a daily basis. If you have questions or are looking for some feedback, simply ask your child’s speech therapist to observe you and your child interact, or show him/her a video of a home interaction. The speech therapist can also provide you with more targeted tips on how to address your child’s specific language needs and goals.

Treatment Resistant Sciatica

Treatment resistant sciatica is the most common form of lower back and leg pain syndrome. Sciatica has a well earned reputation as a chronic and stubborn symptomatic expression and is known to be extremely difficult to cure. In fact, patients who experience symptoms lasting more than 6 months have a better chance of enduring a lifetime of suffering than they do of ever truly recovering 100%.

Sciatica is not a condition or diagnosis unto itself. It is a term reserved for a set of symptoms which generally includes pain, tingling, weakness and/or numbness in the lower back, buttocks legs and/or feet. Sciatica can be caused by a diversity of mechanical, vascular, neurological and psychosomatic sources, although the vast majority of affected patients are diagnosed with a spinal causation of one type or another.

The usual diagnosed spinal sources of sciatica may include such conditions as: degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, osteoarthritic bone spurs, foraminal stenosis, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, chemical radiculitis from a ruptured disc and extreme lumbar hyper-lordosis. The most commonly diagnosed non-spinal structural sources of sciatica include piriformis syndrome and sacroiliac joint dysfunction. While it is true that virtually all of these conditions can create sciatic nerve pain in the lower body, it is also a fact that these symptoms are rarely long lasting and will almost always respond well to appropriate treatment modalities.

If sciatica caused by a structural source is not generally a chronic concern and typically resolves with indicated therapy, why do most patients never recover from their pain? This is an age old question which has plagued sciatica sufferers and care providers for generations. The answer to this question is becoming ever clearer, as new research points to the epidemic incidence of ischemia as the logical causation of most sciatica and general radicular pain syndromes. Ischemia is also known as oxygen deprivation back pain, and can come about due to a variety of anatomical causes often associated with poor cardiac or vascular function. However, the overwhelming majority of ischemic pain syndromes are the direct result of a psychogenically driven or psychosomatically perpetuated pain imperative enacted by the subconscious mind as a defense mechanism against repressed, suppressed and completely unconscious expressions of anger, fear, insecurity, poor self esteem, guilt, regret and other negative and highly sensitive emotional issues.

Medical doctors do not receive comprehensive training in mind/body medicine and are taught in the well established Cartesian tradition of engineering the human body as a great and complex machine. This approach to care is poorly conceived, ineffective and directly responsible for the epidemic of chronic pain which is burdening our healthcare system to the point of failure. Doctors need to wake up to the facts that the mind and body do indeed work together to create all conditions of disease and health. Doctors need to address the emotional side of chronic pain. Most of all, doctors need to stop blaming ongoing pain on coincidental and completely normal spinal scapegoats, such as disc abnormalities and spinal arthritis. The medical approach to treating back pain is a dismal failure and it is time for care givers to acquiesce to the idea that they are completely misguided in almost all that is accepted about common back pain and sciatica. Once this occurs, then true progress towards effective treatment can begin…

Luckily, in the meantime, there are a growing number of doctors who have embraced the truth about chronic pain and have been treating it very successfully using a completely psycho-emotional approach. The treatment statistics are incredible using knowledge therapy, as opposed to the plethora of mostly punishing and wasteful medical modalities, such as spinal surgery, ongoing chiropractic manipulations, risky pharmaceutical treatment and invasive injection therapy. It is amazing how well psychological therapies work at permanently resolving physical pain, while physical treatments do little more than provide temporary placebo effects and fatten the wallets of care givers…

Human Resource Planning – How Does It Affect The Organizational Success

Unlike many years ago, today the business organizations are under immense pressure because of the umpredictable, turbulent and competitive environment. If the businesses are to keep up with the ever increasing competition, then they obviously have to manage their resources effectively. Managing the resources have to be done with careful consideration. Managing the human aspect of the organization is very vital as the the success of the entire organization depends on it’s workforce. In other words, managing the workforce in an organization is indeed not an easy task as people basically have different feelings, aspirations thoughts and needs. However, when it comes to managing the human resources effectively, it is rather important to plan how to utilize the humen resources better, in order to get the most out of the workforce, while fulfillling their needs. This is where the human resource planning comes into action thsu taking into consideration both the orgainzation and the employees.

Human resources planning is the process by which the management ensures that the right number of people with the right skills are available at the right time, in the right job, in order to help the organization achieve it’s objectives. In other words, human resource planning is all about finding out in advance how many workers are needed to perform the tasks, how many employees with the required skills are avilable within and outside the organization and how is it possible to fulfil the staffing needs of the organization when needed. Human resource planning is not new. It has been practised by many organizations in the past as well, in order to ensure that the right person does the right job at the right time. However, in the past the nature of human resource planning practised by many organizations were slightly different to what  it is today. This was because, the environmental conditions in the olden days were stable and certain, and as a result, the human resource planning was mainly focussed towards the short term demand for labour.

But today, with the increasing nature of environmental stability, changes in technology and the ever increasing competition, the nature of  human resource planning  has changed thus focusing on both the short term and the long term labour needs of the organizations. In other words, they not only plan the workforce for the current situation, but also for the many years ahead. If not, then the organizations that do not plan for the future have not much of opportunities to survive the increasing competition.

Having said that, in order to utilize the human resources effcetively, the human resources planners basically have to forecast the organizations workforce needs first, and then come out with a plan which will direct them  how to fulfil those needs. In other means, if the human resource planners are to provide the right number of people with the right skills in order to perform the tasks at the right time, then they obviously have to gather information, came up with objectives and make decisions.

When it comes to human resource planning, there are  three main key areas that have to be addressed by the human resource planners. These includes finding out the demand for labour, performing a supply analysis and balancing both the demand and the supply of labour in the organization. If we go into see each of the key areas in more detail,  first of all the human resource planning begins with understanding the corporate strategy and objectives of the organization. In other means, if they are to decide on how many employees are needed with the right skiils, then they have to know where the organization is heading . With knowing nothing about where the organization wants to go, and how they want to achieve it’s corporate strategy, it is no point coming up with plans regarding the workforce. This is because the number and types of employees needed basically depends on what the organization wants to achieve.  Only once they have an insight to the strategies and objectives of the organization, then they are able to forecast the demand for labour needed by the organization  both in the short term as well as the long term.

Once the human resource planners have an through knowledge of how many employees are needed in the organization with the required skiils,  then next what they do is to take a count of the current workforce in the organization. In other words an inventory of course, to find out how many employees are currently available in the organization and the skills and knowledge of the employees, inaddition to their profile facts such as age , sex , and where theycome from etc. This basically provides the human resource planners with with an insight to what types of skills are available immediately, which will in turn help them to decide what needs to be done next.

Taking into consideration the inventory of the current workforce available immediately, then they go into analyze the internal supply of labour availabe against the estimated demand for labour both in the short term as well as the long term that is necessary to achieve the strategies and objectives of the organization. By doing so, they compare both the figures in order to find out whether the deman for labour could be fulfilled by the immediately available workforce. In other words, to see whether there is a gap between the supply and demand for labour. Then of course, if there happens to be a gap between the supply and demand for labour that means there is either a shortage or a surplus of labour.

However, if there happens to be a surplus or shortage of labour supply  then the human resource planners will develop strategies in order to remove this gap. If there is a surplus meaning to say that the internal supply of labour available is more than the forecasted demand, then they will probably take cation to reduce the available workforce uisng strategies such as retirement, reduce hours and remove flexi hours etc.But if there happen to be a shortage in the labour supply, then they will develop strategies such as recruitment, increase over time increase temperary workers, increse flexi hours etc in the short term. But whenit comes to long term planning,  they mainly concentrate on strategies such as training and development, promotion and career development programs etc, in order to prepare the existing workforce for the future demand of the organization. At the end, human resource planning also involves in keeping a track of the strategies they have implemented in order to findout whether the required labour demends have been met.

To conclude, it should be said that human resource planning is vital for any organization whether big or small. This is because, it does affect the entire organization by way of preparing the workforce to achieve its objectives. If the organizations are to face the challenges in the future, it is of course the human resource planning that paves the way for the organization to utilize the workforce effectively and efficiently. If not for human resource planning, the organizations will be un prepared to face the on going competition. Hence so, it should be said that orgainzations survival amaong the competitors mainly depends on how well the organizations human resource planning is.
