Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR) – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Central serous retinopathy (CSR), also known as central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), is a disease of the eye and retina, which affects vision. CSR is known to be strongly related to stress, gastritis (H. pylori bacteria), kidney disease, and the use of medications like steroids. This condition usually affects males from the age of 20 to 50 years; however, females too may be affected. This condition results from leakage of choroidal fluid due to breaks in the retinal pigment epithelium, resulting in a swelling benefit the retina which accumulates under the central macula. This causes blurred or distorted vision, known as metamorphopsia. Retinal detachment may cause a blurred or gray spot in the central visual fluid.

Modern treatment of CSR consists of removing the known cause of the condition, discontinuing stereoids, and providing counseling and psychotherapy for stress. No medication is known to provide benefit in the treatment of this condition; however, some physicians are of the opinion that mild dose aspirin may help in early recovery. Some patients report benefit with a short course of steroids; however, this treatment is controversial and possibly may cause a relapse or aggravation of the condition in the long run. Hot laser treatment, or cold laser is known to provide benefit by plugging the leakage in the retinal epithelium; however, care needs to be taken in the implementation of this treatment in order to prevent damage to the retina and long-term scarring.

The overall prognosis of this condition is usually quite good, with more than 90% patients reporting improvement within the first six months. However, about 5% of patients may have a rapidly deteriorating vision due to a condition known as Type II CSR, in which there is a decrease but persistent fluid build-up. A few patients may report recurrence of the condition, resulting in progressive loss of vision. Scarring may cause persistent problems such as decreased night vision, reduced color discrimination and distorted vision.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment is especially useful in patients with recurrent CSR and in those patients with little or no response to modern medications or laser therapy. The aim of treatment is to prevent leakage of fluid by strengthening the basement retinal pigment epithelium and helping to resolve the fluid accumulation, so that retinal detachment can be treated or pretented. Treatment is also aimed at reducing stress and preventing strain of the internal parts of the eye.

Medicines like Saptamrut Loh, Tapyadi Loh, Ekangveer Ras, Trayodashang Guggulu, Maha Triphala Ghrut, Maha Manjishthadi Qadha, Saarivadi Vati,: Punanava Mandur, Lakshadi Guggulu, and Rasayan Ghan Vati are especially useful in the management of this condition. Herbal medicines which are useful in the treatment of CSR include Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Triphala (Three fruits), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Yashtimadhuk (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Patha (Cissampelos pareira), Musta (Cyperus rotundus) and Kutki (Picrorrhiza Kurroa).

Medicines like Praval Panchamrut, Sutshekhar Ras and Kamdudha Ras are used to treat associated gastritis. Gokshuradi Guggulu, Chandraprabha Vati, and Punarnavadi Qadha are used to treat associated chronic kidney infection. Medicines like Saraswatharishta, Prasham, Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi) and Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis) are used to treat associated stress along with counseling.

Oral medications like Triphala Ghrut, Yashtimadhuk Ghrut, Shatavari Ghrut, and eye drops containing Triphala, Yashtimadhuk, and rose water can be used on a long-term basis to prevent relapse of the condition. Most individuals affected with chronic or recurrent CSR require Ayurvedic herbal treatment for about three to six months. Regular treatment can provide complete relief to individuals affected with this condition, as well as prevent a relapse and long-term complications. This treatment can also be given concurrently with modern therapy like laser treatment. Ayurvedic herbal treatment thus has a definite role to play in the management and treatment of CSR.

3 Ways to Improve Your Heart Health

Heart: Size of a fist, strongest muscle in the body, a marvellous system that starts beating about three weeks after conception but vulnerable! Vulnerable to damage from things that we do or may be born with a heart condition.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the largest killer in both men and women globally. Globally, 17.1 million lives are claimed every year accounting for 29% of all deaths caused by CVD, making it world's number one killer. In Australia, it accounted for 34% of all deaths in 2008. Cardiovascular disease kills one Australian nearly every 11 minutes as per national heart foundation. It remains one of the largest burdens on our economy.

Sadly a disease that can be mostly prevented is number one killer of loved ones globally.

In developed countries, the main undering problem is atherosclerosis. This is a condition that forms abnormal build-ups of fat, cholesterol and other substances in the inner lining of the arteries (plaque). It is most serious when it affects the blood supply to the heart (causing angina or heart attack) or to brain (which can lead to stroke). The process leading to atherosclerosis is slow and complex, often starting in childhood , and it progress with age.

What is cardiovascular disease?

Cardiovascular disease is disease and conditions of heart (cardio) and blood vessels (vascular disease) including heart attack and stroke. It is a broad term used for heart, stroke and blood vessel diseases and any system that has heart at its center. There are many groups of cardiovascular disease, some of them are:

Rheumatic heart disease – It is a type of heart disease caused by one or more attacks of rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever usually occurs in childhood. It may follow a streptococcal infection that may affect the heart, particularly the heart valves, weakening the heart muscle, or damaging the sac enclosing the heart.

Congenital heart disease – It is a heart defect present at birth. It can be caused by adverse exposures during pregnancy or genetic factors but mostly the cause is unknown.

Hypertensive heart disease – High blood pressure can overburden heart and blood vessels, thereby causing hypertensive heart disease. It may be of unknown origin, known as primary hypertension or secondary to a specific diseases or infections.

Ischemic heart disease – Ischemic heart disease is sometimes commonly referred to as coronary heart disease. It is caused by narrowing of the blood vessels supplying the heart muscles. Therefore, blood supply to the heart is decreed and may cause conditions like angina, heart attack, sudden death.

Cerebrovascular disease (stroke) – Commonly known as cerebrovascular accident (CVA) or stroke is the brain equivalent to a heart attack. It is the result of an imputed blood supply to some part of the brain.

Inflammatory heart disease – Inflammatory heart disease may be caused following an infection or by a toxin or may be of an unknown origin. It may affect the heart muscle (myocarditis), the membrane sac (pericarditis), the inner lining of the heart (endocarditis) or the myocardium (heart muscle).

Is cardiovascular disease preventable?

Cardiovascular disease is mostly preventable. Some people are born with condition that predisposes them to heart disease and stroke but most people who develop cardiovascular disease is due to combination of one or more risk factors.

There are many risk factors associated with coronary heart disease and stroke. The major risk factors include smoking, alcohol use, high blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol, obesity and overweight, physical inactivity, unhealthy diets, high glucose levels (diabetes), physical inactivity to name a few. The more risk factors you expose yourself to, the higher the chance of developing cardiovascular disease.

The role of diet is critical in the development and prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Diet is a key modifiable risk factor for CVD.

Most heart disease is preventable, and risks can be reduced by lifestyle changes such as increasing physical activity, choosing healthy eating habits (food options), saying no to smoking, to name just three.

Economic Impact

Cardiovascular disease is expensive and cost billions of dollars around the world. The economic implications could be vast. It is felt as cost to the country's health as well as loss of income and production of those affected either directly by the disease and as caregivers to those with cardiovascular disease, who cease to work.

Cardiovascular disease is also one of the leading causes of disability, with around millions of people estimated to have disability associated with cardiovascular conditions.

It affects one in five Australians, and affects two out of three families.

Can we help to reduce the burden?

Simple answer is YES we can help! Cardiovascular disease is mostly preventable. Simple steps like:

  • heatlhy eating habits
  • increasing physical activity
  • stop smoking

… to name three can be anyone's starting point.

There is no dollar figure that could be associated to the loss of loved ones. So, do not let your loved ones get affected by it.

Nations around the world feel the burden of cardiovascular disease.

So, why not take the responsibility and make a commitment to change the way we live and help ourselves, family, friends and future generations towards a healthy heart …

There is a heart that keeps us alive … so let's help to keep it alive!

Lymphedema Compression Stockings Alleviate Skin Swelling

Have you been diagnosed with lymphedema? This health condition occurs when a person develops swelling in the legs and arms. In this disease, your body's lymphatic system can become blocked and fluid can collect, which results it from draining and circulating properly. When fluid can not drain, it pools and causes your arm or leg (or sometimes both arms and legs) to swell uncomfortably. There is no cure for this condition but some people may find relief by using lymphedema compression stockings.

What causes it?

Swelling often occurs after a patient undergoes injury, surgery, or infection. Injury or trauma to the lymphatic system can interfere with the body's ability to drain the clear lymph fluid. In addition, cancer and treatment for cancer such as radiation can lead to lymphatic disorders.

If you have this circulation disorder, you may experience arm, leg, finger, or toe swelling. Tightness, heaviness, aching, or thickness and hardening in the extremities is also another sign. People with this disorder are also prone to developing infections in their swollen body parts.

Compression stockings and other therapies

Treating severe boiling often involves exercise and massage, two strategies designed to help the accumulated fluid drain better. Your doctor may recommend wrapping your swollen body part with bandages to facilitate drain of lymph fluid.

Lymphedema compression stockings are also often recommended. The tight elastic of these support hose firmly compress the affected limb, which in turn increases drain out of the swollen area. For people who develop recurrent swapping, wearing compression stockings is a good idea even if no limbs are currently affected because they can prevent swelling in general.

High Cholesterol Is Associated With Erectile Dysfunction

Gentlemen if you're experiencing Erectile Dysfunction (ED) there's a chance that your high cholesterol could be causing the problem.
If your cholesterol levels are above 240 your risk of ED doubles compared to men with levels below 180.

If you have problems getting and / or keeping an erection during sex you may have ED. The problem may not be constant but should be a warning sign that something is wrong

Bad cholesterol (ldl) builds substances known as plaque in the walls of your arteries thus decreasing the blood flow that is needed to maintain an erection.

Blood pressure and certain medications will also cause ED.

If you think that you have high cholesterol you should see your doctor to get a cholesterol test and discuss ways to lower your levels. Your doctor may also place your on medication for ED.

If you do not like taking a lot of different medicines you may want to try some of the better herabl products that's on the market today.

These are some things you can do prior to seeing your doctor:

Stop smoking if you smoke

Include more fiber in your diet and cut down on saturated fats

Start taking an Omega 3 supplement such as Krill Oil.
You should start an exercise regiment to increase blood flow but only after you have seen your doctor.

This problem is common … you're not the only one affected by it and treatment is available.

How To Treat Vitamin B12 Deficiency Symptoms

There are many people who are consuming vitamin B12 supplements do not know that vitamin B12 and folate are B complex vitamins that are necessary for normal red blood cell. Vitamin B12 is rarely found in vegetables, which is why vegetarians and especially vegans who do not eat dairy products or meat, are especially at risk. This vitamin b12 along with folic acid are necessary to keep homocysteine in the blood down to healthy levels. Therefore any deficiency will lead to some health complications.

What are the deficiency symptoms?

Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms are manifest not because people are taking less vitamin B12 than recommended. Deficiency of vitamin B12 affects every cell in the body, but is most often felt in the tissues where the cells normally divide rapidly, as in the blood-forming -tissues of the bone marrow and in the gastro-intestinal tract. The deficiency can also lead to neurological changes such as numbness and tingling in the hands and feet. It also include mood disorders, anxiety, insomnia, restlessness, night terror etc. It can also include fatigue, weakness, nausea, constipation, flatulence (gas), loss of appetite and weight. Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms, like those of many other treatable health conditions, can be essentially identical to age dementia symptoms, senile dementia symptoms and Alzheimers symptoms.

Symptoms of B12 deficiency include insufficient equilibry, forgetfulness, and cognitive decline and, according to a study conducted by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), may be linked to osteoporosis. Symptoms of severe vitamin B12 deficiency (regardless of the cause) may include burning of the tongue, fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, intermittent constipation and diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, menstrual symptoms, psychological symptoms, and nervous system problems, such as numbness and tingling in the feet and hands. Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency, including sensory neuropathy, myelopathy, and encephalopathy, can occur within days or weeks of exposure to nitrous oxide anesthesia in people with sub-clinical vitamin B12 deficiency.

Anemia is the first sign that the body is not getting an adequate supply of Vitamin B12. Pernicious anemia is the name given more than a century ago to describe the then fatal vitamin B12 deficiency anemia that results from severe gastric atrophy, a condition that prevails gastric cells from secreting intrinsic factor.

How to treat vitamin B12 deficiency?

Folic acid can correct the anemia that is caused by a B-12 deficiency. Folic acid, pyridoxine (vitamin B6), and vitamin B12 supplementation can reduce total homocysteine levels, however, this reduction does not seem to help with secondary prevention of death or cardiovascular events such as stroke or myocardial infarction in people with prior stroke. Folic acid intake from food and supplements should not exceed 1,000 μg daily in healthy individuals because large amounts of folic acid can trigger the damaging effects of vitamin B12 deficiency. Pernicious anemia usually develops over the age of 50. It is usually caused by an intolerance to absorb vitamin B12 (cobalamin) that is naturally found in certain foods.

Can Diet Help The Deficiency?

Dietary changes that may be helpful, vitamin B12 is found in significant amounts only in animal protein foods – meat and poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy products. Foods high in vitamin b12 can only be obtained from animal sources, so vegetarians and vegans should ensure B12 is included in their daily vitamin supplements.

Deficiency of vitamin B12 is rarely a result of the vitamin's. Deficiency of vitamin B12 can affect both men and women in equal numbers. Deficiency of vitamin B12 can result in fatigue and apathy, back pain, weight loss, bone loss, problems with balance andreflexes, abnormal gait, tingling fingers, tinnitus, eye disorders, hallucinations and migraine headaches.

Therefore, Eddy Kong has started a useful vitamin supplement information guide that helps you to choose the vitamin you are looking for or simply providing the right information to vitamin supplements.

How Do I Know If I Had Had a Heart Attack?

Most people who suffer a heart attack experience a severe chest pain which is usually in the middle of the chest, in the front, spreading sideways towards the shoulders, and sometimes into the arms. It often has a crushing or tight quality. It may last for quite a long time-several hours, sometimes-requiring pain killing drugs to tie it when it is very severe.

Quite a few of the chest pains we experience are due to heart attacks. Chest pain is very common and usually arises in the chest wall rather than anything deep within the chest. One of the difficulties is distinguishing it from indigestion, which may be very similar but, of course, usually occurs after eating. However, any pain of the above type may be serious and does require a medical opinion as soon as possible.

Most of the risks associated with heart attacks occur within the first hour or two after the sunset. It is there before sensible to seek medical advice early. There has been some controversies as to whether patients are best nursed in hospital or at home. Most doctors would agree, however, that if patients can be identified and diagnosed quickly, it is best that they are nursed in a Coronary Care Unit. If the diagnosis is not made for twenty-four or forty-eight hours, the major risk has passed and it is probably safe for them to be nursed at home.

I had a Bad Chest Pain but it did not Last so Long. Was it a Heart Attack?

If it was a similar tight central pain but of short duration it might have been due to a temporary reduction in blood supply thought one of the coronary arteries rather than complete and permanent blockage. The heart muscle is then damaged permanently and no "heart attack" occurs. The temporary inadequacy of blood flow produces a very similar pain, although it is likely to be less severe and will not last very long-perhaps minutes rather than hours. This type of pain is commonly called "angina".

This pain may be bought on by anything that makes the heart beat faster and stronger; this stress may be physical or emotional, both causing a liberation of adrenaline into the blood stream which leads to a faster and stronger heart beat. This extra work requires more fuel-more oxygen and hence more blood – and this, of course, does not happen when the blood supply is restricted. Many of the treatments for this condition are designed to limit this increase in heart rate and strength of contraction.

His Most Famous Photograph (Fading Away) – Henry Peach Robinson

English photographer Henry Peach Robinson or HP Robinson (1830-1901) was a pioneer of 'Pictorialist Photography,' especially 'Combination Printing.' Pictorialists believed that 'Art Photography' needed to emulate the paintings of everyday life in such a way to etch it in time and remove from it the mundane of the photograph. Among the methods used for the same were soft focus, special filters, lens coatings, heavy manipulation in the darkroom, and exotic printing processes. These processes togetherave an eerie and an unreal feeling of being etched in space and time to the fluid and everyday 'Modern Photography.' Henry Robinson was called "the King of photographic picture making," providing the pinnacle of his competency as a photographer. His "Fading Away" is an all time stunner.

Robinson began his career in 1850, working as a bookseller, while continuing to study art. In 1852, at the age of 21, he exhibited his oil painting "On the Teme near Ludlow" at the Royal Academy. Around this time, he also started taking photographs. After five years, he decided to make this new technique called 'High Art' or 'Combination Photographs,' his career. Robinson learnt the intricacies of photography from Hugh Welch Diamond, one of the earliest photographers in the world. In 1857, Robinson opened a studio at Leamington Spa. Along with making portraits, he started creating photographs, imitating the 'genre paintings.' These artworks shown 'scenes from everyday life, of ordinary people in work or recreation, depict in a generally realistic manner.' Some of Robinson's well-known photographs are 'Juliet with the Poison Bottle' (1857), 'The Lady of Shallot' (1861), 'Autumn' (1863), and 'Seascape at Night' (1870). His masterpiece however, is "Fading Away," a 'Combination Print' that took him five negatives to create.

Founded in 1858, Henry's "Fading Away" depicts the peaceful death of a young girl due to tuberculosis. Her grieving family, her sister, mother, and fiancé precisely, are shown surrounding her. Measuring 24.4 cm x 39.3 cm, the photograph is an 'Albumen Print.' In 1860, Henry explained the creation process of the negative to the Photographic Society of Scotland, which led to huge disapproval of such 'realist manipulations.' Although, the photograph was the product of Robinson's imagination and the subjects are merely posing to create a touching albeit a realistic portrait of a grieving family, many viewers felt that using a traditionally 'truthful' medium as photography to depict such a scene in falsity was too painful and shocking. One critic said that Robinson had cashed in on "the most painful sentiments which it is the lot of human beings to experience."

It seemed that since a photograph is usually a recorded proof of an incident that in reality took place in life, to see an 'untruthful' or artistic photograph was shocking to the viewers of the time. The public felt that though it was all right for painters to paint pictures on the themes of death and grief, it was not natural for the photographers to falsify such a setting in the name of art. This controversy however, made him the most famous photographer in England and the leader of the 'Pictorialist' movement. The exhibitions of "Fading Away" were a huge success. HP Robinson's work impressed Prince Albert too. He became a regular patron of the photographer's works.

Pediatric Brain Tumors and Brain Cancer – Funding Is Key for Research and Support

Every day, across America, people are talking about the progress being made in medical research, or the support provided to patients and families affected by a devastating disease or illness. One thing that often gets lost in these conversations is the issue of money. Research can only move forward if there's funding to support it. Nonprofit organizations and other support groups operate primarily from donations; and even fundraising activities require a budget of some sort. None of these can happen without money.

And, somewhere out there, right now, a group of parents is having that very conversation about the deadliest of all childhood cancers-pediatric brain tumors and brain cancer. What's the latest in research? What kind of support is out there for the kids and families? Why is not more being done, and faster? It is the mission of the nonprofit organizations that support this worthy cause to provide answers to these questions, and they understand that the answers come through proper funding.

Research on the causes and cures of pediatric brain tumors and brain cancer is ongoing, but often progresses at a slower rate than desired. There have, however, been some recent successes in this area of research, including the creation of a tissue consortium, and the publication of a major study of medulloblastoma, a type of brain tumor typically found in children. ("The Genetic Landscape of the Childhood Cancer Medulloblastoma"; Science, published online December 16, 2010.)

Through a variety of programs and services, most nonprofit organizations work to meet the needs of these young patients and their families. Services such as support groups and various family events, as well as assistance with a variety of issues relating to care, treatment, and financial aid give these families the sense that they are not alone on this difficult journey.

Awareness and Education

Anyone who owns or operates a business understands the necessity of marketing. Awareness of the product or services offered is critical to the success of that business. Of course, successful marketing requires a sufficient source of funds to "get the word out."

In that sense, nonprofit organizations are no different than any other business. In order to promote awareness of pediatric brain tumors and brain cancer, there must be a solid marketing plan in place. How else will the average person learn that every day, across this country …

• Nine families will learn their child has a brain or spinal cord tumor;
• Three families will mourn the loss of their child to a brain or spinal cord tumor; and
• Six families will transition to survivorship.

Funding for the ongoing research and essential services provided by the nonprofit groups comes primarily from a mix of events, direct response, online fundraising, and major and planned gift solicitation. For the most part, events institute the predominant source of funds to back these activities.

With adequate funding, progress can continue that will improve the treatment, quality of life and long-term opportunities for children with brain and spinal cord tumors.

How does the old saying go? "No gift is too small; no kind gesture goes unnoticed." Contact a nonprofit organization today to find out how you can help in the fight against pediatric brain tumors and brain cancers.

Are Indoor Air Purifiers Good For Stopping Flu Or Pneumonia?

What do you think? Are indoor air purifiers just another expensive dust collector? The irony being you buy them to collect dust, right? Of course, you really should expect far more of your indoor air purifier than a Hummel figurine collection. For instance, protection from infectious diseases like the swine flu comes to mind.

What options do you have for combating microbes: germs, viruses, bacteria, and mold spores

What does it take to neutralize these little beasts? You have two options: Kill or Contain. Or maybe a little of both.

Killing means UV light. Preferably UVC, a more energetic wavelength and thus more deadly. Microbes in the air passing by a UV lamp may be killed outright but if not, they stand a good chance of being genetically damaged to the point of being unable to reproduce.

There are a few other promising options for killing. Some involve silver treated filters, hydroxyl radicals as in the so called plasma air purifiers. Even titanium dioxide coatings inside indoor air purifiers seem to have a killing effect. Of course, TiO2 coatings are activated by UV light.

Containment is only possible with a true HEPA filter. Preferably in a tightly sealed model with demonstrated total system efficiency close to the HEPA filter's theoretical efficiency. A good model to consider is any of IQAir's HealthPro series. In fact, IQAir air purifiers were exclusively chosen to assist Hong Kong hospitals during the SARS virus outbreak a few years ago.

The benefit of the containment route is a higher degree of removal from the air. With UV light some microbes may pass too far from the UV lamp or even be riding on the shady side of microscopic particles, thus dodging the bullet.

Certain air purifier models offer both high system efficiencies and UV light in combination. You may wish to consider them also. Allerair manufactures a variety of excellent indoor air purifiers with a UV option. NQ Clarifier comes with both HEPA filtration and UV.

How to Eliminate Toilet Odors

No wonder the toilet has all of these bad connotations in human minds. There are the things you do with a toilet, the germs you associate with it, the images you have from public restrooms, the fact that you have to clean it-all of these details leave the toilet somewhat… tainted.

What’s the worst taint of all for the toilet? It’s the taint of smell; after years upon years of use to rid you of your own refuse, something is bound to give. Perhaps it’s the toilet bowl itself? Or is it the tiles, the walls, the sink, the drain or the bathtub? Pray that it isn’t the septic tank though, because that will really stink.

So your toilet and bathroom doesn’t exactly smell of flowers, or it does smell of flowers… the carrion flower variety, that is. What should you do?

Try to identify the toilet smell, of course. Does it smell damp? Musty? Does the odor smell like urine? Feces? Or sewage? Or does it smell like something died somewhere in your bathroom? You’ll need to try to locate the smell too. Do you smell it everywhere in the room or only in certain places like near the toilet or near the sink? Do you have a smelly clothes hamper in your bathroom that’s stinking the whole room up? Identify the origin of the smell, and then go from there.

Basic Toilet Odor Removal

* If you smell an unpleasant odor in your bathroom, and you need to cover it up fast, simply light a wooden match in the middle of that room. Lighting a match produces sulfur dioxide. This chemical is so strong that it hides most other odors from your noses for a short time.

* Obviously the easiest way to make your bathroom smell better is to just open the windows and let the fresh air in! Unless the temperature is below zero, that is, or it’s raining. If you can’t let fresh air in, there are many other methods available.

* You will probably need something stronger than soapy water to get rid of toilet smells. Specifically, white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide counteracts the natural oil in bathroom scum. Just get 1 liter (or quart) white vinegar or 3% hydrogen peroxide (peroxide may cause bleaching), ¼ c. baking soda, 1 tsp. dish detergent (also removes grease) and mix them together. This solution of vinegar/peroxide will dissolve and remove the odor-causing crud instead of just spreading them around.

* Lighting a candle… even an unscented one… in your bathroom can eliminate odors. Or, if you don’t want to create a possible fire hazard because you have kids or pets, set a candle that has a strong fragrance in your bathroom. It will just cover up odors instead of getting rid of them, but at least that room in your house will smell better for awhile.

* Ammonia is also a very useful cleaning agent in killing that salty toilet smell. Clean your toilet with ammonia once, especially on the outside. Do not let ammonia get near the bleach, though.

* Baking soda is a good odor absorbent. Put a generous amount of baking soda in an uncovered container (the size of the container depends on the size of the bathroom) and leave it for several days. Remove the baking soda and replace it with a new batch and leave it for a couple of days. Continue replacing the baking soda until it has cleared the toilet smell.

* Hydrochloric Acid is also advisable. Only for very stubborn stenches, this caustic chemical is very powerful and can tackle smelly stains as old as forty years. But be very careful in its usage and do not leave for it for any longer than the directions say, as it can eat away at the porcelain itself, thereby causing surface roughness that will make the toilet stain even quicker and smell even worse in future.

* Get a sack of charcoal to absorb the bad smell; charcoal is used not only to filter water and other things, but is also utilized to soak up odors, just like baking soda. If you see charcoal in an odor-removing product, it’s likely to succeed at removing odors.

* Disinfect the walls, ceiling, flooring and all fixtures; a lot of people forget to clean them, but these areas have probably collected quite a bit of toilet stink from all those years of use. Do yourself a favor and put the shower curtains and the carpet in the washer, scrub the tiles, and wipe down porcelain tub and sink with a good dose of ammonia, just to make sure that the toilet smell is gone.

Maybe the toilet smell is in the floor tiles grout. If that’s the case, then a strong chlorine bleach soak will work. Also some bleach in the bowl overnight may help. Turn the fan on to remove the bleach smell.

* Clean your toilet. Speaking of the toilet bowl, perhaps a more detailed method in cleaning it is in order. Use liberal amounts of cleaning agent or disinfectant and a bowl brush to really scrub at the porcelain. Afterwards, let the solution sit for a minute before the inevitable flush. Whatever chemicals you use, remember to respect the directions given and follow them exactly; in particular; never mix chemicals as this can be extremely hazardous. Make sure there is sufficient ventilation while you are working and ideally, wear eye and skin protection.

Advanced Toilet Odor Removal

Assuming that your bathroom is clean, i.e., the toilet is scrubbed and has been disinfected, there is no mold or mildew present, the shower curtain/door is free from soap scum, the shower/bathtub have been scrubbed, the tile floor has been swept and mopped, or the carpet is dry and free from spills, and you still smell something unpleasant in the air, then it’s time to investigate the problem.

* Septic Ulcer. Do you have a septic tank? The odor is a warning that there is a problem with the septic system. Sometimes, the sewer might be clogged and needs to be checked, which is the reason why the smell still remains. This bathroom odor can spell big trouble if it’s not remedied as soon as possible.

If your house is connected to a city sewer system, you’ll need to contact a plumber or the city to check out and identify the exact cause. If you live in a rural setting and your sewage is handled by a septic tank, then you’ll just need to call a plumber. Sewage odors in your bathroom drains can mean there’s a problem in the system. That is, the sewage may be backing up and not running out as it should.

Another thing to check is the exhaust pipe which may be clogged too. This is one big problem to solve. If you’re renting, let your landlord know before the septic starts to back up. Now there’s a smell!

* Wax on, wax off. This is another common problem that can make your bathroom smell as though it’s never been flushed even after flushing. If the wax ring that seals the base of the toilet to the sewer pipe has gone deficient, it can allow gases and odors to come into the room from the pipe.

It could also be that the toilet is not seated well when installed; as such, it may require a new wax gasket underneath. Call a plumber and see if they can find the problem. Or do it yourself by replacing the ring then resetting your toilet; the problem should stop by then.

* Check the Gasket. There is a gasket in the connection with the bowl and the pipe leading to the outside. In Wales, for example, there is also the gasket which sits between the floor and the bowl. Either could be damaged.

Check the level of water which is entering the water tank; maybe the water flush is set to light and the lack of water is emptying the trap at the S bend. Try filling the bowl half full with clean water and put some food dye in the water tank, then flush.

Check the level of the dye in the bowl; you should see the color plainly. If not, your toilet is emptying too much. If that’s the case, then get someone who can service your type of toilet. There should be water left in the bowl after a flush to act as a seal against sewer gas even with the low-flush type.

Camphor Blocks and Their Healing Properties

Camphor blocks have been used for their natural therapeutic properties for years, and for many have even become a symbol of their grandmother's old fashioned remedies. Camphor has many faithful followers and they swear blind by its wonderful healing powers and always keep some to hand, for a whole range of purposes.

Camphor originally comes from a tree native to Japan and China and is one the main ingredients in tiger balm. If you have ever used tiger balm, you'll know how potent and pungent camphor can be! It can also be found in aromatherapy oil form, where it can be used as part of a massage oil or even for burning.

One of the most popular uses for camphor blocks is in helping to sooth chest complaints. Back to grandma's remedies, it was common for children to wear it hanging around their neck at chest level to ward of any coughs and cold that were around. If you were unfortunate enough to get ill, it could have been used in the same way to help clear any congestion on the chest.

Another way to clear the chest is wrap it in a pillow case, a stocking or in muslin and place in the bed benefit the sheets. Again, making sure that the camphor block is wrapped up to avoid direct contact with the skin, it can also be used to great affect to ease aches and pains in the joints. Many athletes have used camphor for just this purpose, making use of its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Because of its strong and pungent aroma, it can also be used for getting rid of musty or damp smells. It is often hung in wardrobes to keep clothes fresh.

But what about using camphor blocks for more spiritual purposes? There are many uses here and it is excellent for blowing away the cobwebs and giving your soul a bit of a spring clean! If you perform spells, rituals or prayers then you can grate camphor blocks and burn them over a charcoal block. This is a very cleansing and purifying process.

For calming down your spirits, if you are feeling very stressed or your nerves are 'jangly', place the camphor blocks in the four corners of your room. You will then be literally surrounded with it's influence and energies and will effortlessly absorb it's powers.

Camphor blocks have also been associated with psychic and prophetic dreams. You can use the burning method or the placing 4 blocks in your room as you sleep method but if you would like to foretell what is to happen in your life, try concentrating on what you seek answers to before you drift off to sleep. The camphor will help to inspire you. Camphor blocks are also associated with the Chariot tarot card, which represents the ego and self belief. If you feel that you need a boost to your self esteem you can also use camphor blocks for this purpose too.

I would like to end on a serious note. Please do not use camphor blocks if you are pregnant, or use with children unless advised that it is OK by a doctor. Modern camphor blocks often use synthetic materials that can be toxic if consumed directly so it is best to avoid any risk of harm by taking these precitations.

Otherwise, I hope this does not put you off enjoying the wonderful, therapeutic impacts of camphor blocks!

Whiplash Injury – A Pain in the Neck

Whiplash is an injury to the neck caused by a sudden movement back, forward or sideways of the head and neck. Depending upon the severity, it is also called a neck sprain or strain, cervical sprain or strain. The injury often involves the muscles, disks, tendons, and nerves.

  • Most whiplash injuries are caused by a car accident, often by being stuck from behind.
  • Shaken Baby Syndrome
  • Falls from a horse or a bicycle
  • Headbanging
  • Trauma from being hit, kicked or shook
  • Accidents, such as riding a snowboard or a skiing accident
  • Injury from riding a roller coaster or an amusement park ride that hyper-extends the neck or causes it to be snapped suddenly
  • Extreme, sudden training to lift or pull a very heavy object

Muscle and Ligament Symptoms

  • Tightness or spasms of the muscles of the neck or upper back
  • Pain with movement of neck
  • Decreased mobility and stiffness
  • Burning and tingling in neck and shoulders, upper back
  • Pain in shoulder
  • Pain in upper back or between shoulder blades
  • Pain in one arm
  • Low back pain
  • Pain in jaw or face
  • Pain in the face, the entire head, or behind the eyes
  • Difficulty swallowing and chewing plus hoarseness, which can be symptoms of injury to the esophagus or larynx

Neurological Symptoms

These symptoms may be the result of injury to the soft tissue in the neck or a mild brain injury or concussion.

  • Vision problems, blurred vision
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Poor concentration, forgetfulness
  • Feeling of disorientation
  • Sensitivity to sound and light
  • Irritability
  • Depression
  • Sleeplessness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Dizziness (vertigo)
  • Feeling of pins and needles in arms, possibly legs

Diagnosing A Whiplash Injury

  • History and Physical must be done
  • X-rays to rule out fracture or dislocation
  • CT Scan (Computerized Axial Tomography) shows detailed images of neck
  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) produces detailed images

Treatment depends upon the severity of symptoms.

  • Ice may be applied to neck for 24 hours after injury.
  • NSAID Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) may reduce pain and muscle inflammation.
  • Muscle Relaxants may be prescribed.
  • Physical therapy may be recommended.
  • Mild range of motion exercises may be prescribed with proper post methods to treat excessive strain on neck.
  • Cold and heat treatments may bring some relief.
  • Massage therapy promotes healing and relieving pain.
  • Chiropractic therapy may be recommended. Spinal manipulation appears to be the most effective within the first 6 weeks following the injury.
  • Soft collars are advised only for the first 2 or 3 days when pain and inflammation re the worst. Prolonged use has been shown to delay recovery from whiplash. In some cases, intermittent use is helpful.
  • A fraction or dislocation requires the wearing of a collar.

  • Mild whip lash injuries may heal within 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Moderate injuries require 2 to 3 months.
  • Severe whiplash may take months to heal and symptoms, such as headache and neck pain, may linger for 6 months or longer.
  • Chronic symptoms may last for years and degenerative changes in the disc and vertebrae may develop.

A whiplash injury truly can become a 'pain in the neck' for sufferers of its long term effects.

Canine Osteosarcoma – What You Need to Know

Canine osteosarcoma is the most common type of dog bone cancer. It comprises 80% of all malignant bone cancer in dogs. This is an aggressive form of cancer that is highly metastatic and difficult to treat.

Canine osteosarcoma affects mainly the limbs, although it can form in any bones.

This type of bone cancer occurs mainly in older and large breed dogs, with a slight predisposition for males.

Symptoms of canine osteosarcoma
In early stages, the symptoms are not noticeable. As the tumor grows and destroys the bone, there will be lameness and swelling near a joint. The pain can cause your dog to be less active than usual. As the affected bone becomes weak, it can break and result in fraction.

Diagnosis of osteosarcoma in dogs
The first step is a physical examination of the affected area. This is followed by radiographs of the bone with tumor for characteristic changes such as bone loss, deformation or fraction. Since these findings are common in other types of canine bone cancer, it is not definitive of osteosarcoma. A bone biopsy is necessary to provide an accurate diagnosis. If malignant osteosarcoma tumor is confirmed, radiographs of the lungs and chest area are taken to determine any metastasis.

Treatment of canine osteosarcoma
By the time your dog displays visible signs of osteosarcoma, the tumor would have likely metastasized to other organs. The treatment is twofold: managing pain and controlling metastasis.

Limb amputation gets rid of the pain. If metastasis has occurred, chemotherapy is necessary to control the spread of cancer and to maximize survival time. Dogs are capable of living with 3 legs so amputation does not restrict their activity or movement.

For some dogs with neurologic or orthopedic issues that are not suitable for amputation, there are 2 treatment options. The first option is limb sparing surgery, where the affected bone is removed and replaced with a bone graft. The other option is to manage the pain with radiotherapy and analgesic medications, without surgery.

The prognosis for canine osteosarcoma is not good when metastasis has occurred. It is worst when the tumor spread can be seen on radiographs of the chest. Your vet should be able to advise you on the best treatment options for your dog.
