India was known as ‘Hindustan’ in medieval time. Sultans of Delhi and the Mughal emperor called this land as ‘Hindustan’. A new change came to this land when the British conquest India. The British officers called this land as ‘India’. From that time ‘Bharat’ or ‘Hindustan’ became India.

Composition of Indian Society

India’s social structure is a unique blend of religions, cultures and racial groups. Historically, India has been a hospitable land to numerous immigrants and invaders from distant parts of Asia and Europe. The cultural patterns of these alien settlers have over the past many centuries been interwoven with the native culture to produce India’s glorious cultural heritage.

India is a country where all the world’s major religions are found. Among the major religions in India are: Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddism, Zoroastrianism and Animism. Each of these main religions has a number of sects of its own.

1. Hinduism: Majority of the people of India are Hindus. Hinduism is an amalgamation of Indo-Aryan, Dravidian and Pre-Dravidian religious elements. According to 2011 census, nearly 89.6% of Indian population are Hindus.

Hinduism contains a number of sects such as the Lingayat, the Kabirpanthi, the Sakta, the Radhaswamy, the Satnami, the Brahmo Samaj, the Arya Samaj and many others. Hinduism provides a solid base for national unity through common beliefs, festivals, customs and traditions. The followers of Hinduism, believe in the doctrine of ‘Karma’, ‘Dharma’, rebirth, immortality of soul, renunciation and salvation.

2. Islam: Islam, the religion of the Muslims, originated in Arabia. It entered India towards the end of the 12th century A.D. The Muslim rulers in India patronised it. Most of the Indian Muslims are converts from Hinduism or Buddhism.

Muslims in India constitute nearly 10% of total population. In 1941, in the undivided India, Muslim constituted nearly 24% of the total population. But, even now, India continues to have a large Muslim population.

Islam doesn’t believe in idol worship. It professes the fatalistic acceptance of Allah’s will and considers Prophet Mohammad as the greatest prophet. The ‘Quran’ sacred book of Islam, ordains five primary duties of a true and devout Muslim, such as belief in God (Allah), prayers of five times a day, the giving of alms, a month’s fast every year and a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in the life time of Muslim.

3. Christianity: Christians in India are scattered all over the country, but they are mostly found in Kerala where they constitute nearly one-fourth of the State’s population. At present 20.5 million people or 2.43% of the total population practise Christianity in India.

There are mainly three sects in India. They are (i) Romo-Syrians, (ii) Roman Catholics, (iii) Protestants.

4. Sikhism: Sikhism was founded by Guru Nanak in the 16th century A.D.. The Sikhs were a part of Vaishnava sect of the Hinduism before they converted their religion. Sikhs are nearer to Hindus than the Muslims in their religious beliefs. Sikhs are mainly found in Punjab and the adjoining states. They form about 2% of our population.

5. Buddhism: Buddhism originated in India during the 6th century B.C. Gautam, the Buddha was the founder of Buddhism. Buddists are found in Sikkim and the adjoining hills. They are also found in Maharastra. The number of Buddhists in India is very meagre and it represents only less than 1% of the total population.

6. Jainism: Lord Mahavir established Jainism in India in the 6th century B.C. It is very close to Hinduism in its religious doctrines. They represent only small portion i.e. 0.45% of our total population. Jains are mainly urban people. They are found in town and cities of Punjab, U.P., Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharastra.

Jains are divided into three sects, namely; (1) The Digambaras, (2) The Swetambara, (3) The Dhundias.

7. Zoroastrianism or Parsi Religion: Zoroastrians are the follower of Zoroster. They came to India from Persia in the 7th century A.D. in order to escape from the forcible conversions to Islam. Their number in India is neglible. They are about one lakh in total, half of which live in the city of Bombay (Mumbai) alone. They are mainly urban. They are the most literate and are on the top of the economic ladder of India.

8. Animism: Animism is mainly a tribal faith. In India, there are about 30 million people who believe in Animism. It is a very primitive religion, according to which man is believed to be surrounded by a number of impersonal ghostly powers. These powers are said to reside in rocks, rivers, trees stones etc.. By propiating these powers the tribals think themselves make free from diseases and difficulties.

Five Stages Of Reading Development

Learning to read doesn’t just happen. It has to be taught through systematic, organized instruction. Reading is a skill which is built upon through stages and is an ongoing process.

If a stage of reading development has not been learned, students will flounder in their reading ability, which also affects their writing skills. It is imperative that teachers make certain students fully understand each stage of the reading/writing process before they move on to the next level.

Jean Chall, world renowned reading expert and psychologist for fifty years, and past professor emeritus at Harvard University cites her five stages of reading development below:

Pre-reading Stage:

Unsystematic accumulation of understandings about reading between pre-school and kindergarten.

Stage 1:

Initial Reading or Decoding Stage (grades 1-2; Ages 6-7 )

Student’s central task is learning arbitrary letters and associating them with corresponding parts of spoken words. Learner acquires knowledge about reading. Phonics.

Stage 2:

Confirmation, Fluency, Ungluing from Print, Automaticity Stage (grades 2-3; Ages 7-8)

Consolidation of what was learned in Stage 1. Requires reading many easy and familiar books for developmental reading. Gradual increase in functional and recreational reading. Common use of the basal readers. Functional reading important – content area texts – here’s where we fail in our attempts to prepare our students. Range of possible recreational reading increases.

Stage 3:

Reading for Learning the New Stage: A First Step (Grades 4-8; ages 9-13)

Readers need to bring prior knowledge to their reading. Children acquire facts.

These are the stair steps of reading development. They are built upon and climbed, as students grow in their literacy development. Sometimes students get stuck in one of the stages. It’s my job as a literacy specialist to “unstick” them so they can move on to the next phase and beyond, empowering them to become enthuiastic readers and writers.

  • Garlic (finely chopped) – 11/2 tsp
  • Soya sauce -1tsp
  • Tomato-chilly sauce – 2 tsp
  • Corn flour -1tsp
  • Capsicum – chopped -2 tbsp
  • Oil – 1 tsp
  • Salt and pepper – to taste


Mix together soy sauce, tomato-chilly sauce and corn flour with 2 tablespoons of water in a bowl and keep it aside. Heat the oil in non-stick pan and add the baby corn and sauté over a high flame for 5 minutes. Add the green chilly, ginger and garlic and sauté for another 3 minutes. Then add corn flour and sauce mixture. Mix well over a high flame till the sauce coats the baby corn. Toss in the capsicum, add salt and pepper and mix well. Serve hot. A great side dish to enjoy!

Note: The ingredients used above are not only low in calories but also have health beneficial values. Ginger is considered to have some cancer fighting properties and garlic may be slightly protective against heart disease. As I graduated from Singapore Swimming Association, I am competent to relate my experience. Regarding other associations, I did not graduate from it, thus it will be unfavorable to comment on it. However, these swimming association have a few common criteria: A valid lifesaving certification, valid first aid certificate or cardio pulmonary certificate. The other requirements and information can be found on the respective website.

What is the different between these different swimming accredited instructors? In my opinion, there is no difference. All these swimming instructors have a passion in swimming and want to coach their students to become water competent and hopefully inspire one that may follow their foot step to continue their passion. However, the certification will determine the location where the swimming instructor is licensed to coach.

In Singapore, public swimming complex are under the care of Singapore Swimming Council (SSC).SSC only allow Swimsafer Instructor which are certified by SSA to coach in the pool. For other association certification holders, they are only allowed to coach in private housing with swimming facilities. Swimsafer are also allowed to coach in this premises. Thus, interested applicants may wish to consider Swimsafer certification as you can find majority of the students having their lesson at SSC public pool.

The first step to become Swimsafer is to equip yourself with National Coaching Accreditation Programme (NCAP) which is a theory course which consists of lectures on the fundamental principles of coaching and Sports Science. The course is conducted by Singapore Sports Council (SSC) appointed lecturers. More information can be found on their website.

Next, a valid CPR cert and a lifesaving certification which may be Lifesaving 1, 2, 3 or Bronze medallion which is certified by Singapore Lifesaving Society. Yes, swimming instructor need to know how to save people to deal with emergency cases like your students having difficulty in swimming and struggle for help. Moreover, now Swimsafer instructor is required to impart some of the rescue techniques and theory to the students. Thus, it is advisable to be well equipped in this area. If you did not have the lifesaving certificate, you can go to any public pool and ask the personnel there if there is any available lifesaving teacher there or may call up Singapore Lifesaving Society about your interest. You may also choose to take up lifesaving instructor to enhance your knowledge in this area. Lifesaving Instructor course is conducted by Singapore Lifesaving Society.

After obtaining NCAP Level1, lifesaving certification and valid first aid or CPR cert, you can enrol into swimming instructor technical level 1 course. The criteria consists of swim test to choose swimmers who has achieved a certain competence in their four swimming strokes which consists of breaststroke, front crawl, back and butterfly. If you are selected for the course, you are required to pass their theory and practical test in order to achieve the swimming technical level 1 certificate.

So how long does this process take? A person who has no requirement may take about one year to obtain the certificate. Thus, it will be beneficial to start early if you are interested to join the swimming industry. Remember in order to become Swimsafer Instructor. You need the below certification.

Heart Failure- Heart failure is a condition in which the heart can’t pump blood the way it should. In some cases, the heart can’t fill with enough blood “Heart failure” doesn’t mean that your heart has stopped or is about to stop working. However, it’s a serious condition that requires medical care. Heart failure is also called congestive heart failure, or CHF. “Congestive” means fluid is building up in the body because the heart isn’t pumping properly.


Treatment of the Cause: If the cause of heart failure is a narrowed or leaking heart valve or an abnormal connection between heart chambers, surgery can often correct the problem. In most cases we do recommend massage, but oftentimes when the condition is severe, it will be in conjunction with therapies and/or recommendations from other health care providers in order for an individual to get the most immediate and effective results.

So where should a person with muscle pain turn first and why? Primary Care Physician? Chiropractor? Massage Therapist?

Making the right choice largely depends on how a person answers the following questions:

  • What is the severity of the condition and how long has it been present?
  • What is your general health condition and history, including family medical history?
  • Are you willing to take medication prescribed by a traditional medical doctor or must the therapy be all “natural”?
  • Is the pain caused by something specific like an injury or a pre-existing condition?
  • What kind of insurance, if any, is available and what services will it cover?
  • If there is no insurance to cover therapy, what kind of budget do you have to pay for treatments out of pocket?

This may seem like an overly conservative if not complicated approach if we’re just talking about a stiff neck, but the idea is to identify any potentially more serious health conditions, and also to avoid paying for anything that could be covered by insurance.

First let’s get the insurance question out of the way. When it comes to massage therapy, often the only kinds of insurance policies that will pay for it (including at home massage) are auto insurance or workman’s compensation insurance for car and work injuries. Massage therapists can not officially diagnose any condition, so a doctor’s prescription is always required. It should also be noted that normal health insurance may cover physical therapy, but this is quite different from massage therapy and often requires a prolonged treatment plan.

Next and perhaps more importantly; when someone approaches us with serious pain, we want to make sure that it’s not something they should see a doctor about first. If it is something with a sudden onset, highly abnormal (not just a stiff neck), or possibly associated with other health problems (just to name a few possible red flags) we might recommend seeing a medical doctor first. This assumes that the individual would be open to using medication, because in addition to the myriad of tools at physician’s disposal, it is highly likely that a doctor will prescribe an anti-inflammatory or possibly a prescription pain killer if the pain is severe.

It’s important for people to understand that while massage therapy can be very effective in reducing pain caused by muscle tension and related restrictions, it can only achieve so much with one visit. Typically, in order to address more chronic kinds of pain, multiple sessions will be required to make significant headway. Therefore, it is often not a bad idea to see a doctor who may be able to prescribe medication to help the condition, both in terms of reducing pain immediately, and also for reducing inflammation in general, which is often largely responsible for musculoskeletal pain. These efforts can actually make subsequent massage therapy sessions even more effective.

Think of the tight muscles like a frozen stick of butter. If you try to press into it when it’s right out of the freezer, it’s almost impossible to make a dent. However if it has been defrosted to room temperature (like muscles on an anti-inflammatory), it could be in a much easier state to work with in the care of able hands. This being said, it’s also important to be careful about the use of pain killers before getting a massage and advise the therapist of the current use of any medications.

Another option for those with muscle pain which would fall somewhere in between going to a medical doctor and seeing a massage therapist would be going to see a chiropractor. While a chiropractor can not prescribe medication, they can diagnose certain conditions, perform x-rays, and provide natural therapy including “adjustments” among some other things that massage therapists are not authorized to do. In some cases they may also be able to accept normal major medical health insurance along with a co-payment. For some people this is a good “in-between” option providing a relatively high level of care that is also “natural”. At the same time, there can be drawbacks.

3. Ask yourself, “How can I impress my audience?” Think about your background. Did you accomplish something no one has or did? if so, include it. This will make your attendees say ‘wow’ before they even get to hear you speak.

4. Connect yourself with a celebrity or a person they know. Write about the people or companies you’ve done work for… or better yet, include a picture of yourself with the president of the company you are speaking for, or, if you’ve got it, with a celebrity. If you can’t get any of these, you can always write about how many states or countries you’ve been to! Make yourself appear to be connected to celebrity in some manner, and people will take note!

Utilize these four steps and present the best motivational speaker biography you can. You’ll attract a huge audience who’s excited to hear you speak (which means plenty of money in your pocket). Now go put these ideas to use!

Choosing the Right Joint Supplement – Know Your Options

As a consumer, it can be hard to choose which medicinal and nutritional supplements are best for you.  Many, if not most, supplements do deliver on their promises; however, some are certainly better than others and knowing what to look for when choosing a supplement is extremely important.


For the purposes of this article, we will focus on one common ailment – joint pain and stiffness.  Joint pain, disability, and restricted mobility affect more than 40 million Americans.  As the U.S. population ages, it is expected that this number will more than double over the next decade.  These symptoms, once considered an unavoidable consequence of aging, are now being successfully treated by joint support products.  This is particularly true in the case of osteoarthritis. 


While some people are genetically predisposed to developing this most common form of arthritis, many people will develop degenerative osteoarthritis due to injury or overuse of joints.  The most commonly prescribed treatment for osteoarthritis pain is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (“NSAIDS”), which provide temporary relief from inflammation in the joints.  This common treatment generally works for a while, and many people will experience no complications from the drugs. For some, however, the side effects are significant.  Increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and digestive disorders are only a few of the serious risks associated with taking NSAIDS. 


Nutritional supplementation offers hope for osteoarthritis suffers, without the risk of the potentially deadly side effects of NSAIDs.  The acceptance of joint support products by consumers has been steadily increasing due to their proven effectiveness, as well as their ability to promote and maintain joint health with little or no side effects.  Millions of people have experienced some relief and pain remediation through regular supplementation with various dietary products. Glucosamine, chondroitin, and calcium have been popular choices for regular supplementation for joint problems and bone strength, but each has drawbacks with respect to effectiveness, bioavailability, and tolerability. The often overlooked mineral silica is an attractive alternative providing similar benefits but without many of the drawbacks associated with glucosamine, chondroitin, and calcium. 


Glucosamine:  In general, glucosamine is an amino sugar that has shown moderate ability to relieve the pain of osteoarthritis and restore partial movement to affected joints. However, taking glucosamine derived from sea creatures may cause allergic responses in individuals who are allergic to shellfish.  Individuals with diabetes may experience elevated blood sugar levels if they inject glucosamine which may even raise blood sugar for individuals who do not have diabetes.  Pregnant or breastfeeding women are also advised to avoid taking glucosamine because little is known about its effects on this patient population. 


During research studies, gastrointestinal complaints such as constipation, diarrhea, and nausea were attributed to taking glucosamine.  Some study participants who took glucosamine sulfate also reported drowsiness or headache. In addition, glucosamine may increase the risk of excessive bleeding when it is taken in conjunction with warfarin; other anticoagulants or anti-platelet drugs; aspirin; or herbal products that reduce the blood’s ability to clot.  Finally, injecting it may increase blood sugar levels, thereby interfering with insulin and drugs or herbals that lower blood sugar.


Chondroitin: Chondroitin is a sulfate molecule that occurs naturally in the body and is believed to provide a different chemical from glucosamine that is important in the formation of cartilage; however, its effects are not understood as well as glucosamine’s. Some people believe that it may help keep cartilage healthy by absorbing fluid into the connective tissue. However, studies have not shown conclusively that chondroitin helps repair or grow new cartilage or even helps prevent cartilage from further deterioration.


Many chondroitin supplements are made from cow cartilage.  If you are a vegetarian or otherwise object to the use of animal based products, look for a supplement made from algae instead.  There have been occasional reports of mild side effects which include nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, constipation, indigestion, stomach pain, and heartburn. Chondroitin is similar in chemical composition to heparin, a drug used to thin the blood; accordingly, it is theoretically possible for chondroitin to increase the effects of blood thinners. 


Chondroitin is often combined with glucosamine in many popular supplement products such as Osteo Bi-Flex, Cosamin and Estroven. The Arthritis Foundation recommends exercising caution in taking glucosamine and chondroitin for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Moreover, due to the popularity of glucosamine-chondroitin supplements and the apparent lack of reliable information about their usefulness in treating osteoarthritis,the National Institutes of Health funded a study to test the effects of chondroitin and glucosamine on osteoarthritis of the knee.  This multicenter, placebo-controlled, double-blind, six month long trial found that glucosamine plus chondroitin had no statistically significant effect on symptoms of osteoarthritis in the overall group of osteoarthritis patients.


Calcium:  Calcium supplements are widely popular and come in several forms including calcium carbonate and calcium citrate.  The primary difference between these two types of calcium supplements is the amount of elemental (or actual) calcium they contain. Calcium carbonate contains almost twice as much as citrate, which generally makes the carbonate form less expensive.  Calcium citrate is often recommended for the elderly because it may be easier for their digestive systems to absorb.  A recent review of calcium and bone mass studies found that calcium citrate malate has high bioavailability in all age ranges including young girls as well as postmenopausal women. 


Side effects of calcium supplementation include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, stomach pain, thirst, dry mouth, and increased urination.  Although it is well accepted that calcium supplements reduce the risk for osteoporosis, there is concern that high calcium dosages may increase the risk for hardening of the arteries and kidney stones.  High calcium intake can result in calcium deposition into soft tissue and can also impair absorption of other minerals such as magnesium, zinc, and iron.  If taking calcium supplements, you should not eat large amounts of bran or whole grain cereals and breads because they may reduce absorption of calcium.  Similarly, consuming alcohol, large amounts of caffeine or vitamin D, or using tobacco products may also impair the absorption of calcium.


Silica: Silica, also called silicon, is an essential mineral and potentiator of other minerals like calcium for bones; glucosamine for joints; and antioxidants for healthier arteries and cardiovascular function.  Silica is a trace mineral required for the formation of healthy connective tissue, bone, skin, hair, and nails.  Silica is also essential for collagen formation, healthy arteries, and regulation of calcium deposition in the bones.  Absorption is critical to its effectiveness because dietary sources of silica such as those found in food, horsetail, and colloidal gel (silica) products are very poorly absorbed because of their insoluble, polymerized forms.  For optimal absorption to occur, dietary silica must first be converted to organic silicon (monomethylsilanetriol). This form of silica has excellent bioavailability and is found in premium product offerings such as Orgono Living Silica. Unlike the other nutritional supplements discussed for joints, silica has no known side effects.


In addition to knowing the differences between each option available, here are a few other considerations to keep in mind when selecting a nutritional supplement.


Quality: Is the company committed to observing Good Manufacturing Practices? Does the product contain pharmaceutical-grade ingredients?  Does it contain the recommended amount of each ingredient to be effective?


Delivery: Form is important. Powders, pills, tablets, and capsules all have little “extras” that can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb supplements.  Liquid delivery of the supplement ensures your body can absorb the active ingredients quickly and effectively, without extra binders, fillers, and additives found in powders, pills, tablets, and capsules. 


Tolerability:     Is the product safe? Are there any side effects associated with the product? Have there been any drug interactions reported?


Reputation: Is the company reliable? Does the company feature testimonials from satisfied customers?  Does it have a negative reputation?


Customer care: This is particularly important in nutritional supplements, as many companies use independent sellers to distribute their product.  Is the company you purchase your supplements from an authorized distributor?  Do they stand behind their product?  Do they ship quickly? 


As you can see, there are many factors and options to consider when choosing a nutritional supplement for joint health. Being informed is the best way to decide which one is right for you.

Hair Growth – the Negative Factors

In the first group, the “Negative Effect” group, we have already mentioned the obvious systemic problems that will have an important influence. You must, of course, be fit and well but conditions such as anaemia, over or under active thyroid, or polycystic ovaries, for example, will have a serious adverse effect on hair growth and must be diagnosed and treated without delay. Anaemia may be caused partially by dietary deficiencies, giving rise to low iron and ferritin levels, particularly common in people who do not eat red meat and do not take the necessary “B Group” vitamin supplementation, particularly B12. You do not need to be clinically anaemic before low iron levels in the body will reduce your hair growth rate.

The trace elements present in minute quantities in the body but essential catalysts for the operation of the chemical network, must all be present, even arsenic is now thought to be an essential trace element. The macro elements (calcium, magnesium and phosphorus), the elements present in larger quantities used in the production of bone and other tissue must of course be present in the optimum quantities. All the vitamins (from A to U) must also be present in the body at the recommended level (especially vitamins A, B group vitamins, vitamin C, and vitamin H for hair and skin growth). They are all vital for normal body processes. The body cannot synthesise any of these elements or minerals; they must all come from the food we eat. Likewise with the vitamins, they must almost all come from the food we eat; only a few can be synthesised by the body. Restricted diets, slimming courses and poor nutrition can very quickly lead to specific deficiencies and consequent hair and skin problems. Nutritional problems are by no means confined to Third World countries and many modern sophisticated clinics see cases of nutritional deficiencies. To eat well may seem blindingly obvious, but without a healthy, varied diet, which includes quantities of fresh fruit and vegetables, your hair and skin will not be at their best. If you have any doubt, arrange a blood test or a mineral hair analysis for these levels to be checked.

Just as deficiencies in certain agents will have an adverse reaction, so does the introduction of unwanted agents, especially toxins, into the blood stream. Smoking, excess alcohol, and most induced chemicals (drugs of abuse) will have a serious, adverse affect on hair and skin growth.

Chemotherapy is an extreme example of a severe toxin introduced deliberately into the blood stream to fatally affect the mutant cancerous cells present. The collateral damage to the rest of the body is considerable including (least importantly of all) the hair follicles, which, in response to the severe toxic trauma, immediately and synchronously, stop growing, even though they are in the growth (anagen) phase.

The resultant “anagen effluvium” (total hair fall) results in immediate cessation of hair growth; the now non-growing hairs are held in the follicles for a further short period before being shed to produce temporary total baldness. New hair growth is already activated in the hair follicle and the new hair synchronously re-grows back to its normal position, although the texture and colour of the hair may have been affected by the severe trauma.

Many drugs are of course introduced into the blood stream for their therapeutic effect and these pharmaceutical agents, whilst performing their primary task for which they were prescribed, will also disturb the existing delicate hormone balance to some extent, i.e. they will have side effects. This secondary action, the side effects, is usually negative, but not always and the treatment of high blood pressure with Minoxydil in the 1970s produced not only hirsute women (women with excess hair growth in the male pattern) but re-growth of vellus hair on the bald scalps of men suffering from Androgenic Alopecia, a feat which up until then was thought to be impossible and precipitated an enormous jump in research and development of drugs for the treatment of common baldness.

There are other systemic conditions of a more insidious nature, such as Alopecia Areata, a partial failure of the auto-immune system of unknown cause or origin, although stress, which has the effect of raising hormone levels, is implicated. The white blood cells of the body attack the healthy hair follicles causing breakage and loss of hair in the characteristic coin-shaped patches. The mechanism, although much studied, is not well understood, and there is now thought to be a genetic influence in this condition. A high percentage of Down’s syndrome children suffer from Alopecia Areata.

Systemic problems are the second biggest group of factors involved in hair loss, after the leading genetic group of influences and many serious conditions, secondary syphilis, lupus, HIV, etc., first appear as dermatological problems of the hair and scalp.
