Making Sense of your Body’s Signs

Have you ever noticed things about your body that are annoying, weird, smelly, or downright embarrassing? If so, you’re not alone. We all experience the often unsightly and sometimes unseemly signs and signals our bodies send us about our state of health. Ugly growths may pop up on our eyelids, or skin tags under our breasts. Our nails may be yellow or our partners may complain that we smell like ammonia.

Fortunately, many of these “body signs” are harmless and can be ignored or treated cosmetically. But sometimes what may seem like a cosmetic concern is more than meets the eye. The ugly growths on your eyelids may be xantelasmas, tiny deposits of cholesterol forewarning you that you may have high cholesterol and be at risk for heart disease. Unsightly skin tags – a common sign of aging – may signal diabetes. Yellowed nails may be nicotine stains, but they can also be warning signs of a lung or liver disorder. And while the ammonia-like odor you give off may mean you should hire a cleaning service, it can also mean that you’re eating too much protein, or you have Helicobacter pyelori bacteria, the bug that causes stomach ulcers.

Body signs can be seen, heard, tasted, felt, or smelled by you or others. Before modern diagnostic techniques, doctors had to rely on what their own and their patient’s five senses revealed to them. They listened to patients’ hearts, felt their pulses, looked at their tongues, eye-balled their eyes, inspected their hair, skin, and nails, smelled their smells, studied their stools, and sniffed or sometimes even tasted their urine. Doctors today, even though they may use sophisticated diagnostic equipment at their disposal, still apply these sensible techniques ? with the possible exception of tasting urine.

You, too, can learn to use your senses to detect warning signs of serious conditions and get medical help before they become full-blown diseases. You can:

Look at your hair, eyes, tongue, skin and nails.
Listen to your voice and stomach sounds
Smell your body wastes
Taste your mouth and saliva
Touch your hair, skin, nails
Going from head to toe, here are some warning signs you may detect using your five senses. And keep in mind that any change in any of your senses can itself be a warning sign that something is out of kilter.

When your hair feels more dry and brittle than usual, you may be over-processing it. Or, dry hair may signal an under-active thyroid or nutritional deficiency.

If your hair looks like it’s thinning, and you’re a woman, you may have female-pattern baldness, which often runs in families. But it can also be a sign of an over-active thyroid or an early warning sign of diabetes.

Hearing the sound of your heart beating inside your ears is actually normal, especially when lying down. But if you hear your heart beat or a throbbing sound in only one ear, it may be a warning sign of a heart murmur, high blood pressure, or other vascular disorders.

When normal noises sound louder than usual, it may be a drug side effect or a sign that you’ve been drinking too many diet sodas that contain aspartame. Super sensitivity to sound may also be telling you that you have a magnesium deficiency, or an autoimmune or other serious disease.

Seeing floaters, those spots or flecks that appear floating across your field of vision, is pretty common. But if you notice a sudden increase of floaters, you may have a retinal tear or even detachment (especially if you see flashing lights with the floaters), which requires immediate medical attention.
Eyes that feel dry all the time, may be caused by low humidity, or be a drug side effect. Chronic dry eyes can also be a warning sign of some autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, hyperthyroidism, and lupus.

While a nose that frequently looks red can be a tell-tale sign of excessive drinking, it can also be a red flag for the skin condition, rosacea. Interestingly, alcohol can trigger or worsen this condition.

If your sense of smell is not as keen as it used to be, it may be due to an injury to your nose, a normal sign of aging, or a sign of any number of disorders including zinc deficiency, nasal polyps, diabetes, hypothyroidism, and multiple sclerosis. It can also be very early warning sign of Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease.

A terrible taste in your mouth that won’t wash away with mouthwash can be a side effect of such medications as antibiotics, antidepressants, antihypertensives, as well as some vitamins supplements. It can also be a sign of gum disease, a viral infection, gastrointestinal disorder, Bell’s palsy, or burning mouth syndrome, a rare condition that primarily affects menopausal women.

A healthy tongue is covered with tiny bumps called papillae. If you tongue looks or feels very smooth and glassy, it may be telling you that you’re deficient in certain nutrients such as folic acid, vitamin B12, or iron. A smooth, red tongue may signal pernicious anemia or malabsorption syndrome, a condition in which the body cannot adequately absorb nutrients.

Hearing your stomach rumbling a lot may merely be the result of excess gas from a high-fiber diet or a diet containing too many carbohydrates, carbonated drinks, or artificial sweeteners. But excess gas may also signal lactose intolerance, food or drug allergies, or any number of gastrointestinal disorders.

If your arms or legs frequently feel numb and tingly, it may be the result of a pinched nerve, or an important warning sign of several serious conditions such as adrenal disorder, a circulatory problem (peripheral arterial disease), or a nerve disorder (peripheral neuropathy).

Whatever you eat can affect the odor (and color) of your urine. But urine that often smells sweet can be an important warning sign of undiagnosed or uncontrolled diabetes.

What you eat can also affect the color (and sometimes the odor) of your stools. If your stools look very pale, it may be from eating a lot of rice, potatoes, and other white-colored foods. Medicine containing calcium can also cause pale stools. But persistently pale stools can signal a blockage of the bile ducts, which can be caused by tumors or liver diseases including hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver cancer.

If you feel a single, rough, or scaly patch of skin somewhere on your body –especially on your arm, leg, chest or other sun-exposed area – it may just be a scar. But you may have a pre-cancerous condition called solar (or actinic) keratosis.

If you see dark horizontal streaks that look like (but aren’t) splinters under your finger or toenails, they may be splinter hemorrhages, a sign of trichinosis, a parasitic disease caused by eating undercooked pork or wild game. They can also be warning signs of psoriasis, peptic ulcers, kidney disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, blood-clotting diseases, and endocarditis, an infection of the heart.
You can see that checking your body periodically from head to toe can sometimes uncover important and often-missed warning signs of serious diseases. Keeping track of your body signs can be an important preventive health measure. It will also help you to actively participate in your health care and the diagnostic process as a partner with your doctor. And don’t forget to check out those near and dear to you; you may be able to pick up things that they themselves are unaware of.

If you do notice a disturbing body sign on either you or your loved ones – no matter how trivial or embarrassing – mention it to a doctor. Discussing annoying, bizarre, or embarrassing signs with a doctor will make it much easier to get a quick, accurate diagnosis when something is wrong, enabling you to get prompt treatment. It can also help you rule out serious conditions when all is well. Indeed, many of the body signs that may concern you will turn out to be perfectly normal and benign, or of no particular consequences, thus saving you further medical expense, time, and anxiety.

Arsenal 0-0 Premier League encounter last 3 games big crazy ball into the opponents 14, is expected to victory

Miami Dolphins Jerseys store report

Tuesday 0:00, Arsenal will be their last of the season away games, they will challenge in the Aiwu De Park Stadium Blackburn. Sam Allardyce’s team had a powerful draw at home to Chelsea, a guest can gunmen overwhelmed the end of numerous previous 3 games? Point of view from the historical record, Arsenal are confident of reasons.

Premier League Blackburn Rovers as the power of the traditional type of team, was once more troublesome rival Arsenal, but Gunners in recent seasons the team when dealing with power-type record has been significantly improved. Since February 26, 2006 0-1 away defeat to rivals, the gunmen in the next four years unbeaten against Blackburn, 7 league games 6 wins and 1 level. More unexpected is that, in 7 games, Arsenal averaging 3.57 goals as high as the total losses of only 5. In a recent three contests, a total of 14 break Arsenal Blackburn Rovers door.

Blackburn at home this season and has good results, in the present of their 44 points, 75% from home. As the first 36, Blackburn and Sunderland 44 points with the plot, 11th inferior goal difference, they are expected to eventually enter the standings Shangban Qu, and last season they only relegation was confirmed in the final rounds of success. Arsenal hope Ai Wude taking all 3 points to ensure that their third position, however, only 3 teams this season, take three points here, namely, Manchester City, Tottenham and Everton three teams, Manchester United and Chelsea will only get a draw here.

It is noteworthy that, Blackburn at home in their number of goals conceded so far is 17, which only conceded more than Arsenal’s home more than two, and they are top of the Premiership season, “0-0” large, a total of 7 Field 0-0. Of course, every time and played against Arsenal, the situation has worsened, Blackburn and Arsenal clash in the past four seasons, averaging up to 4.29 overall goals, such data may have been seeding the gunmen on the fans is a good news.

Diouf is the key to Blackburn this season, players will not play in the Senegalese in 12 league games, Blackburn scoring rate from 1.22 down to 0.75, a drop of up to 39%. Diouf missed because of tonsillitis before the two games, but will soon return to the Arsenal game, it is worth noting that Chelsea’s goal is draw from the hands of Diouf. David – Dunn, as the core of the home team’s defense, when playing in starting to bring improvement to the team is not a small number of games in his absence, Blackburn, averaging 0.5 goals conceded will be more.

Treatment Of Fragile X Syndrome

Fragile X syndrome is a type genetic disorder that causes limitations in the physical, behavioral, intellectual and emotional development of the child. It is also known as Martin-Bell syndrome. A single mutation of gene is passed on from one generation to the next and that is how this syndrome manages to find its way into every generation. Also, this particular syndrome is prevalent among all races and ethnicities.

The most common characteristic of Fragile X syndrome is mental retardation, which is also true of kids with Down syndrome and autism. In fact, Fragile X is said to be the leading cause of Autism. More specifically, Fragile X is caused by a faulty genetic code that fails to pass on protein synthesis information.

The Ayurvedic treatment of fragile X syndrome is aimed at treating the medical problems commonly encountered by people affected with this condition. Cognitive deficit is treated using medicines like Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis), Mandukparni (Centella asiatica), Vacha (Acorus calamus) and Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera).

Now what? There were too many questions without clear answers. I needed to digest all this new information and put it in perspective. There were just so many feelings to sort out for my wife and I. We never lost our focus in helping our son. It was just the added dimension of a mystery syndrome and a new direction in life that we weren’t expecting.

Mental Retardation is not as much a disease as it is a symptom of a variety of psychological conditions. It is a disorder in its own right, though, characterized by intellectual functioning that is well below average. Often the patient has an IQ of around 70 or less. Patients of autistic disorder are not necessarily retarded.

Instead, this area appears within the microscope like a thin constriction that’s subject to breakage during preparation, which accounts for the designation “fragile X.” Advances within the past decade have helped to explain both the presence from the weak website and the distinctive pattern of inheritance exhibited by the syndrome.

Nodes are palpated with the distal portion of the fingers, by gently but firmly pressing in a circular motion along the regions where nodes are normally present. When assessing the nodes in the head and neck, the child’s head is tilted upward slightly but without tensing the sternocleidomastoid or trapezius muscle.

There are many tips that can help prevent a frustrated outburst that results in SBS. If you are a new parent or are new to babysitting or child care, consider taking a short course on baby care. Some common strategies to quieting a baby include checking to see if the baby is hungry or needs to be changed, giving the baby a pacifier, taking him or her for a walk, cradling the baby close to your body.

The relationship between metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disorders was found in the 1940s, and later became more obvious in 1980s’ studies. Metabolic syndrome is also known as the syndrome X or dysmetabolic syndrome, but usually the medical report and press only use the term ‘metabolic syndrome’.

Some Symptoms of Cushing’s Syndrome :

1-Depression, anxiety and irritability.

3-Muscle weakness.

4-Facial flushing.

5-High blood pressure.

Getting Pregnant With Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome – Powerful Methods For Enhancing Your Fertility

Women who have polycystic ovarian syndrome face two main problems that make getting pregnant with polycystic ovarian syndrome incredibly difficult. The first issue is that because their hormonal levels are out of balance, their menstrual cycle is not regular. This makes it almost impossible to track ovulation and time intercourse at the most fertile times.

The other main issue is that the ovarian cysts make it difficult for the ovaries to function properly, meaning that fewer healthy eggs are produced. The good news for women with PCOS, however, is that there are plenty of natural ways to overcome both of these obstacles.

If you are looking for a way to get pregnant with polycystic ovarian syndrome, the first method any health professional will recommend is to try to attain a healthy weight. That is because most women who are overweight will have difficulty regulating their insulin levels and this can cause further problems with your hormones.

When you lose weight and reach the ideal one for your health, your insulin levels will go back to normal. This will mean an improvement in your hormonal balance which makes it much easier to track your ovulation cycle.

If you have tried to lose weight without results, then you still have other options for getting pregnant with polycystic ovarian syndrome. One idea is to try zinc supplements such as zinc gluconate and zinc citrate. This mineral will help you regulate your appetite, making it easier to lose weight and see the results mentioned above.

In addition to helping regulate your appetite, zinc can also help your body control its blood glucose levels and improve your thyroid function. This is crucial as it can help balance out your levels of progesterone and estrogen. Zinc can even lower your risk of inflammations, making it easier to conceive. You should try taking 30 mg of the mineral each day.

Although there isn’t as much research with aromatherapy as there is with other methods of increasing fertility, many people feel that it can significantly help your chances of getting pregnant. The idea is that certain oils will regulate your menstrual cycle as well as ovulation, making it easier to track when you are at your most fertile.

The oils used in aromatherapy can also regulate your levels of both estrogen and progesterone. The best way to use aromatherapy to improve your fertility is to use essential oils like sage oil, geranium oil, jasmine oil and almond oil and apply them on their abdomen.

Another option is to try taking iodine supplements. Recent studies have shown that iodine deficiency may be linked to PCOS. That is because some problems associated with it include high blood sugar, diabetes, and weight gain along with insulin resistance.

Because of this, iodine supplements can help with both major problems associated with fertility when you have polycystic ovarian syndrome. It can help regulate your menstrual cycle so you can track your fertility and it can also reduce your risk of cysts in the ovaries, meaning that more healthy eggs will be produced. Although these are just some of the methods that can make getting pregnant with polycystic ovarian syndrome easier, they are all effective.

Diabetes – Smoking Danger

Nicotine is a stimulant, speeding up the heart by about 20 beats per minute with every cigarette and reduces the body’s ability to use insulin by 15 percent. It also raises blood pressure. Nicotine makes arteries all over the body become smaller making it harder for the heart to pump through the constricted arteries, causing the body to release it’s stores of fat and cholesterol into the blood, therefore smoking decreases the circulation of blood throughout our body causing less oxygen to be delivered to our vital organs and tissues. This makes diabetics harder to manage heart disease at the same time causing it.

Because of poor circulation of blood in the body, the immune system slowly reacts to allergens, bacteria and virus attacks, smoking diabetics are easier to get colds, the flu and sick more often. This poor circulation also increases the risk of impotence, that is a significant problem for men with diabetes even if they don’t smoke.

Also, smoking blunts the ability to taste. Smokers choose foods with strong flavors, therefore smokers tend to eat less fruits and vegetables and more in fat and salt.

Since smoking causes fluctuation of insulin in the blood stream this increases blood pressure, and cholesterol and decreases the circulation of blood in our body. Smoking diabetics are at least 3 times at risk of developing heart disease than diabetics who don’t smoke and they are much likely to die if they suffer a heart attack. Managing meal plans become very difficult for diabetics smokers. Therefore stop smoking is the benefit for a diabetic smoker’s own good.

Aims of the Cervical Cancer Vaccine

Cervix is the neck of the uterus. It is the bottom, slim part of the uterus which is connected to the topmost part of the vagina. Cervical cancer is believed to be due to the infection caused by HPV (Human Papillomavirus). The malignant symptoms of this cancer include bleeding of the vagina, contact bleeding and vaginal mass. Other symptoms include moderate pain during sexual intervention and vaginal discharge. In the advanced stages of this disease, a person experiences loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, pelvic pain, back pain, leg pain, single swollen leg, heavy vaginal bleeding, bone fractures and leaking of urine or feces from the vagina.

Because of the growing cases of cervical cancer each year, a cervical cancer vaccine was made available. It was aimed to provide protection from HPV which is believed to be the root cause of most cervical cancer. Gardasil is the first cervical cancer vaccine approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Its effectiveness is said to be up to 98%. Cervarix is the other cervical cancer vaccine which is already in use in some countries. But in other countries, it is still waiting for approval before its full campaign. Gardasil vaccine protects against HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18. Cervarix is said to be 92% effective against HPV 16 and 18. HPV types 6 and 11 are considered as the cause for 90% reason for all genital warts issues. HPV 16 and 18, on the other hand, are considered as the cause for 70% of all cervical cancer issues. The vaccine aims to particularly block the causes of the cancer (such as the HPV) to even get to the core.

Out of the 11,000 American women established to have cervical cancer annually, close to 4,000 of them die because of the said disease. Is the fifth most common cancer that causes death among women. At present, Gardasil and Cervarix are highly recommend to women from ages nine to twenty five years old who never experienced HPV yet. But another study shows that this HPV vaccine can also be effective for women from ages forty-five and above.

Gardasil vaccination among men reduces their risk of getting genital warts and precancerous lesions because of the HPV. This vaccine is particularly popular among gay men. Aside from getting genital warts, they are the ones more likely to have penile and anal cancers as well.

At present, Gardasil is not recommended to pregnant women since its long term fertility effect is not yet known.

Until today, vaccines are reported to be safe. In the United States, more than sixty million doses of the vaccine were dispensed already. Amongst the most common side-effects are soreness where the injection was done, slight fever, dizziness and false. However, all these are only considered common mild effects. There were also reports of some serious side-effects such as brain swelling, severe allergic response, paralysis, weakness and death; However, these were not linked to the vaccine itself. Still, the FDA continues to monitor on this.

The Dangers Of Obesity In Pregnant Women

Pregnant women who are obese, defined as a weight of more than 200 pounds, have an elevated risk of health problems both to themselves and their babies. And, the incidence of obesity among pregnant women in the United States is increasing, according to a recent study.

The rise in maternal obesity, which reflects the rise in U.S. obesity levels overall, is a significant public health concern because of the many associated risks it poses. One such risk found among moderately obese women was an increased risk for preeclampsia, a high-blood pressure condition that can cause extreme swelling in the mother’s face and hands, and is associated with an increased risk of health problems to the newborn. The condition can also progress to eclampsia, which involves seizures during and after childbirth that can be life-threatening.

An increased risk of having to deliver by cesarean section, delivering an abnormally large child, carrying their child for longer than usual, and diabetes were also noted in the study among obese pregnant women. Obesity during pregnancy is also attended by other complications including:

Increased rates of hypertensive disease and infections

  • Higher rates of blood clots and respiratory complications
  • Independent risk factor for neural tube defects, fetal mortality and preterm delivery
  • Increased risk for having a child who may have an increased risk of subsequent childhood obesity and its associated morbidity

Even mild forms of obesity pose a risk, researchers say. One way to avoid these risks is by controlling weight while not pregnant. While it is commonly taught that weight-loss during pregnancy is bad for the fetus, researchers now believe that starting a weight-loss program during pregnancy may be beneficial..

New Targeted and Stem Cell-Based Therapeutics for Psoriasis

Skin disorders affect the world population and are often mostly defined by clinical parameters, but are generally not well understood at the cellular and biochemical levels. Psoriasis is a joint and skin disorder (at least four types of Psoriasis classified according to clinically observed symptoms of the skin) that affects 2–3% of the population, and is therefore one of the most common autoimmune diseases worldwide. As a chronic skin disorder characterized by epidermal hyperproliferation and dermal inflammation that vary in severity, from minor, localized patches to complete body coverage, psoriasis can be associated with other inflammatory conditions, such as psoriatic arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and coronary artery disease. Many patients with psoriasis suffer from moderate to severe disease and report a substantial negative impact on their quality of life. Some estimates report a total annual direct and indirect costs of psoriasis of over US$11 billion. Missed work days account for 40% of the cost burden. About 10-15 percent of people with psoriasis also have psoriatic arthritis.

Psoriasis therapy has been directed at clearing the skin lesions and preventing their recurrence. Approximately 20% of patients with psoriasis have a very mild form of the disease where treatment with over the counter topical products are used. Treatment by physicians include topical agents, phototherapy, conventional oral systemic therapy and biologics. New stem cell-based therapeutics are being developed and offer a promising new avenue of therapy for this chronic, life-long disease.

Traditional Therapies

Traditional therapies have included topical corticosteroids, such as clobetasol (Clobex; Galderma) and bethamethasone. These are the most prescribed treatments for most patients with mild to moderate psoriasis. Treatment with these compounds and subsequent withdrawl of treatment can lead to rebound, an aggressive recurrence of the condition. Other topical agents that are commonly used are vitamin D3 analogues, such as calcipotriene (Davonex/Daivonex; Leo Pharma/Warner Chilcott); retinoids, such as tazarotene (Tazorac/Zorac; Allergan); and a fixed-dose combination of calcipotriene and bethamethasone (Taclonex/Xamiol/Dovobet; Warner Chilcott). These treatments are generally considered to be safe, but have variable efficacies. Long-term use can potentially lead to adverse effects.

For moderate psoriasis that is unresponsive to topical therapy, phototherapy (UV radiation) is a cost-effective treatment option, but may require a considerable time commitment from the patient given the frequent physician office visits that are needed. System agents are used when psoriasis is refractory to topical therapy and phototherapy, or when the skin coverage is too extensive. Oral systemic agents include retinoids, methotrexate, cyclosporine and acitretine; they are efficacious, convenient, and inexpensive. However, using the oral systemics is limited by high levels of toxicity to the liver, kidneys and bone marrow, and their potential teratogenicity.

Research in the past decade has led to new “targeted therapies” based on how immune cells, such as T cells and dendrocytes, travel and use cytokine signaling to interact with one another. Two basic strategies are utilized: 1) anti-T cell , and 2) anti-cytokine therapies. Compared with the conventional systemic agents, biologics that target specific aspects of the immune system aim to offer improved safety and tolerability, thereby enabling longer-term therapy. Six biologics have been approved so far.

Two biologics: 1) alefacept (Amevive; Astellas/Biogen) and 2) efalizumab (Raptiva/Xanelim; Genentech/Roche/Merck–Serono, target T cells that are involved in disease pathogenesis, and are not very efficacious. Efalizumab was withdrawn from the market due to an increase in the risk of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.

Three other biologics: 1) adalimumab (Humira; Abbott), 2) etanercept (Enbrel; Amgen/Wyeth/Takeda), and 3) infliximab (Remicade; Centocor Ortho Biotech/Schering–Plough) , inhibit the activity of the pro-inflammatory cytokine tumour necrosis factor (TNF). Etanercept’s market position was stengthened through a first-to-market advantage and is currently the most widely prescribed biologic for psoriasis. The annual sales for this indication exceed $1.1 billion. Infliximab, administered by infusion in a physician’s office and typically prescribed to patients with the most severe disease, sold $250 million in 2008. Adalimumab, the third TNF inhibitor approved for psoriasis, has been gaining momentum in the market because of superior efficacy data from clinical trials and a more convenient dosing schedule, coupled with a pricing advantage. The sales of adalimumab for psoriasis was $785 million in 2008. TNF inhibitors, especially adalimumab,  will likely benefit from the withdrawal of efalizumab.

Certolizumab (Cimzia; UCB), another TNF inhibitor, which is approved for Crohn’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis, demonstrated efficacy in Phase II psoriasis trials. However, this drug appears not to be in further development, possibly because of a saturated market. This may also be true of golimumab (Simponi; Centocor Ortho Biotech).  Biosimilar versions of TNF inhibitors will likely enter the market and relieve cost pressures for these expensive drugs.

Ustekinumab (Stelara; Centocor Ortho Biotech/Janssen–Cilag), which inhibits the activity of interleukin-12 (IL-12) and IL-23, has shown strong overall efficacy and superiority to etanercept. Ustekinumab also offers durable efficacy and convenient dosing frequency (once every 12 weeks). Ustekinumab was approved in Europe in January 2009, and US approval is anticipated in late 2009 or early 2010.

Briakinumab is another agent that targets IL-12 and IL-23,  (ABT-874; Abbott) that has completed Phase III studies (data are pending). Earlier trials of briakinumab showed impressive efficacy.

Products On The Horizon

Other products in development include stem cell-based theraputics for topical application. Studies of stem cells in the brain at the UCSD School of Medicine and other institutions, treating dementia for example, and stem cells in artificial skin, for wound healing, have demonstrated that the major effects of stem cells derive from their release of cytokines and growth factors into the area of tissue to be repaired. Thus, in these treatments, live stem cells are releasing cytokines and growth factors into the area to be repaired as a topical application. In recent pilot studies evolving from the aforementioned stem cell studies, formulation of the stem cell-released cytokines and growth factors into a topical product have shown good efficacy with no side effects when treating psoriasis.

How to Win a Capricorn Man – Ways to Capture and Keep His Heart

The question of how to win a Capricorn man is one that many women wish they had an answer to. It’s easy to understand why that is. Capricorn men are confident, self controlled and driven towards success. They are fiercely loyal when they do fall in love and because they are realists you know that you’re not going to spend your life with a man who is living with his head in the clouds. Winning the heart of a man born under this sign isn’t the easiest task. Once a woman has a thorough understanding of what this type of man finds irresistible, she can ensure she becomes the woman of his dreams.

Learning how to win a Capricorn man begins with recognizing that patience is the key. Men born during late December through mid-January are not the type to fall in love at first sight. They pace themselves when it comes to love and won’t hand their heart over to a woman unless they’re certain she’ll take good care of it. Don’t pressure a man like this into any type of commitment, be it big or small. Allow him to set the tone of the relationship and follow his lead.

Supporting him and his dreams and goals is essential if you want to attract a Capricorn man. Don’t belittle what he wants to do with his life even if you don’t think it’s something he should be pursuing. Men like this are notorious for being very successful, sometimes at out of the box careers. You also need to ensure that he knows each day how much you appreciate and value him as a part of your life. It’s important that he really feels that if you want him to fall deeply in love with you as well.

Last but not least is to always be mindful of the fact that Capricorn men place a very high value on their families. This not only includes their future wife and children, but their current family members as well. Be respectful of his parents and siblings. Be prepared to spend time with them as he’ll want to. You can lose his interest very quickly if you don’t appreciate and recognize how much those closest to him mean to him. Never allow yourself to be jealous of his love for his family as this can cost you any future with him that you may have had.

Confused about what Capricorn men really want? Is there a particular man in your life that you want to fall in love with you? You can capture and keep [out] the heart of any man.

COLD WARS: Don’t Let The Common Cold Take You Prisoner

Elliot Dick and Jack Gwaltney are old soldiers in the cold wars. For more than 30 years, the pair of American researchers has subjected hundreds of volunteers to colds to find out how the viruses do their dirty work. Indeed, it was Dick who, decades ago, helped invent “killer Kleenex” – tissues impregnated with chemicals that proved impervious to cold viruses but less successful in the marketplace. And Gwaltney once went so far as to record the number of times Sunday school teachers and medical students pick their noses – as part of an experiment looking into how cold viruses are transmitted.

What can they and other researchers tell you about how best to defend yourself against a cold? And if a cold virus does penetrate your defenses, what are the best ways to keep the ensuing sore throat, clogged nose, watering eyes, sneezes, coughs, and general misery milder and shorter than the usual week or so? Here’s the latest report from the cold front.

What’s the best thing I can do to escape a cold?

Keep your nose clean – figuratively speaking, that is. If you can stop a rhinovirus from docking high up inside your nose – in the nasopharynx, where nose meets mouth – there’s no way it can make you sick. “No question,” says Gwaltney. “It’s that specific.” Since a cold virus can get there only by touch or through the air, here’s what to do:

Keep your hand away from your nose and eyes. Scratching your nose or rubbing your eyes won’t put a cold virus directly into the nasopharynx, of course. But a virus deposited at the base of the nose or in the eye can easily be inhaled higher up into the nose or drain into the nasopharynx through the tear ducts. According to Gwaltney’s own study, most people’s hands wander up to their noses or eyes at least once every three hours. Train yourself to do better, and you’ll cut down dramatically on the number of colds you catch.

Wash your hands often. Within reason, of course. You can’t wash them every five minutes, for heaven’s sake. But when you’re around other people with colds, think like Lady Macbeth. Wash at every opportunity, preferably with an anti-bacterial soap.

Move away from people who are coughing and sneezing. And if you’re the one with the cold, carefully cover your own coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – not cloth hand-kerchiefs, which act like virus motels when they’re moist with mucus. Dick has found that keeping virus-bearing droplets from flying around goes a long way in preventing a cold from spreading. “We’ve tested a lot of couples, and we didn’t get any transmission when they were being careful,” he says.

Should I take vitamin C and other supplements?

Probably. There’s no direct evidence that vitamin C can prevent cold, but several well-controlled studies have demonstrated that it can markedly lessen both the symptoms and duration of a cold. Dick’s studies show that taking one 500-milligram tablet, four times a day, is all you’ll need.

Can my toothbrush reinfect me?

It’s not likely, for a couple of reasons. First, a rhinovirus, the most common cold virus, has to get into your nose, and what won’t happen with a toothbrush unless you have an extremely wild way of using it. Other kinds of viruses, such as enteroviruses, which live in your gut, do cause a few colds, but so few that they’re no reason to soak a toothbrush in rubbing alcohol or disinfectant. Second, once you’re infected with a cold, you produce antibodies to the virus that caused it. That gives you a grace period of at least a few weeks – maybe much longer – of resistance to that particular virus.

How risky is it to be around people with colds?

A lot less risky than you might think. Cold viruses, studies show, have to attack in overwhelming numbers to get past the hairs, mucus layers, and other mechanical barriers built into the human nose. “Twenty minutes in a doctor’s office or on a bus ride to work shouldn’t pose any great threat,” Dick says, “unless you’re near somebody with a really bad cough that puts out a lot of droplets.” Even a couple of hours at the movies is pretty safe, he says, assuming you stay three or four seats away from anyone who’s not covering up and you wash your hands before putting them near your eyes or nose.

Spending all day in an office building filled with sneezers or a couple of hours or more in an airplane is another matter. In an airplane, especially, recirculated air in a pressurized cabin distributes viruses among all the passengers and dries out mucus membranes that normally, when moist, would trap invaders and dispose of them. For that reason, one of the best things you can do is drink a lot of water.

And kissing is off limits – right?

Wrong, all wrong, says Dick. A kiss is hardly more likely to transmit a cold than is sitting in a draft, he says. As chief of the Respiratory Virus Research laboratory at the University of Wisconsin, Dick once blind-folded 13 pairs of volunteers and walked them into a sterile room. One person in each pair had been infected with a particular cold virus; the other person had neither the cold nor antibodies that might be present from an earlier exposure to defend against it. While his team of researchers watched, each pair kissed for a minute to a minute and a half. “Being blind-folded, I think, let them really put their hearts into it,” he says. Just one of the 13 smoochers caught a cold.

Getting any more passionate, however, could put you at risk. Jack Gwaltney, chief of epidemiology and virology at the University of Virginia medical school, points out that some kisses involve touching with the hands. If your hand picks up a virus and then comes in contact with your eyes or nose, he says, you might wake up a few days later with the sniffles and blame the kiss, unfairly, for the cold.

What if I catch a cold anyway? What should I do?

For starters, get as much sleep as you can to keep your immune system humming. And drink plenty of liquids – especially water – to loosen mucus and carry away the debris of infection. Beyond those basics, it’s usually best to attack symptoms individually. Here’s how:

Try decongestant drops or spray for a stuffy nose. Unlike pills, they put medication right where you need it. When you’re aiming at your nose, why run a drug through your stomach? Decongestants are a good bet for the worst night or two, when stuffiness ruins your sleep. But don’t use them more than three nights in a row, because rebound swelling can stop you up all over again.

Give antihistamines a try. Until recently, experts warned that histamines – chemicals released in allergic reactions – have little to do with cold symptoms. That advice was based partly on Gwaltney’s own reports that he detected no histamine in nasal secretions. “However, science marches on,” he says. In a more recent study, not yet published, he finds that for people with rhinovirus colds, antihistamines reduced sneezing by about 50 per cent and runny noses by about 30 per cent.

Stop a cough with codeine or an over-the-counter suppressant containing either dextromethorphan or diphenhydramine chloride. All the drugs work by soothing the brain’s cough centre. Gwaltney has also reported success with naproxen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. He speculates that it works by interfering with prostaglandins, hormone-like substances that trigger inflammation and coughs. Ibuprofen, another anti-inflammatory found inn pain-killer pills, also reduces coughing. Use these drugs in the minimum over-the-counter doses.

For a sore throat, try gargling with a teaspoon of salt dissolved in a glass of warm water. The salt-water won’t kill viruses or bacteria, but it will reduce inflammation and take the edge off the pain. Gargling also helps wash away irritating secretions left by post-nasal drip.

How can I be sure I have a cold and not an allergy or the flu?

It’s a matter of degree. A cold usually comes on gradually, with a vague out-of-sorts feeling. Then, in a day or so, you’ll typically notice a slight sore throat, followed by a symphony of problems in your nose, throat, and chest. If you feel chills or aches, they’ll be slight, and your fever, if any, probably won’t top 100°.

An allergy can mimic a cold, but it’s much less likely to cause a fever, and it is never accompanied by aches and pains. If your eyes and nose itch like crazy, suspect an allergy.

Influenza strikes fast, with fever, aches – mainly in the back muscles – sore throat, and a dry cough worse than you get with most colds. The fever usually hits the 101° to 102° range, and it sometimes flames as high as 104°, often so quickly that you’ll recall the exact hour it began. Other symptoms may include runny nose, headache, eye pain, and sensitivity to light, as well as diarrhoea and vomiting. Even if you’re the type of person who goes about your business with a cold, you’ll probably find that impossible with the flu.

Will chicken soup help?

It appears so. Irwin Ziment, a pulmonary specialist at the University of California at Los Angeles, points out that chicken, like most protein foods, contains natural amino-acid called cysteine, which is released when you make the soup. “Cystine bears a remarkable chemical similarly to a drug called acetylcysteine, which doctors prescribe for their parents with bronchitis and respiratory infections,” he says. Acetylcysteine, which originally was made from chicken feathers and skin, thins out mucus in the lungs and make it easier to expel, he says. Ziment advises his patients to make their soup as hot, spicy, and garlicky as they can stand. Pepper, hot curry powder, and other spices release a wave of watery fluids in the mouth, throat and lungs, thinning out mucus.

When is cold most infectious?

For the first three days, from the time the first symptom appears. “You start sending a lot of viruses into the outside world when your nose is running and you’re coughing and sneezing,” Gwaltney says. During those three days, your body’s defenses are working to knock down the number of viruses, and by the fourth day, you pose less danger to people around you.

How long should I expect my cold to last?

It depends. Most people are completely over a cold’s symptoms within 10 days. But the illness can last anywhere from three days for a lucky few to several weeks.

If yours hasn’t improved after 10 days or seems worse, call a doctor. Call sooner if you notice facial swelling or super-sensitive molars – signs of bacterial infection in the sinuses or middle ear. You can attack that, unlike, the original viral infection, with antibiotics. You don’t always have to – such infections often clear up by themselves – but you should, for two reasons: to get rid of pain and debilitation and to reduce the risk of the cold’s turning into a sinus infection that might last months or years.

What else should I do?

Stay cheerful. Watch funny video movies. Call a friend you haven’t talked to in years. Visualize viruses keeling over and dying. Remind yourself, aloud if necessary, that this illness is no big deal.

You’re not just whistling in the dark when you do all that. You’re helping your immune system shorten the cold. Sheldon Cohen, a researcher at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, found that the more positive a person’s attitude – measured by responses to questions about stress from volunteers at the Common Cold Research Unit in England – the less his or her chances of catching a cold in the first place, and the less severe the symptoms if a cold did appear.

Look on the bright side, in short, and you’ll improve your chances of avoiding a cold or, if you run out of luck, at least getting over it fast.

How Those With Egg Allergies Can Avoid Harmful Foods

For those with egg allergies, trying to avoid foods that can adversely affect you can be extremely difficult.

If you perform most of your own cooking and create you own meals, you can have a nutritionist create a meal plan for you that limits the use of egg products and egg ingredients that may cause an allergic attack. Working with a dietician will also be good in that it focuses on making sure that you have enough of the daily percentages of nutrients that strengthen your immune system.

If you go out to eat restaurants, take the initiative in letting the waiter know that you have an egg allergy. She will likely be able to point out foods that don’t have eggs. If egg is not an essential component of the dish, and you really want the dish, see if she can have the chef prepare a version of the food without eggs.

It’s very important that you have no fear about letting the waiters and waitresses know of your allergies. They want you to return and most will be more than happy to honor your requests.

Whenever you buy baked goods, remember that a lot of baked goods have egg white powder as one of the ingredients. For those with an egg allergy, this can affect you just as much as eating the egg whites from real eggs. Since cooking destroys some of the allergens, you may have different reactions from different recipes because of the different cooking times.

Furthermore, pre-packaged recipes may contain egg whites alone, egg yolks alone, or both. This is an additional thing that causes a bit of confusion because most of the proteins causing the egg allergy are actually in the egg white. So you have to know what was used in the recipe to guess as to how it will affect you.

Such a large percentage of the pre-packaged foods that you find in grocery stores these days have egg ingredients that it is just about impossible to stay away from them completely. Thankfully, however, when eggs are cooked, a significant part of the allergy inducing proteins are modified in the process making them less harmful to you. How eggs affect you are mainly determined by three factors – how sensitive to eggs you are, the amount of egg white in the food product, and the amount of heat or cooking that has been applied to the food. That’s why you should be especially careful of eating raw eggs.

Because of the food label laws in this country, it has become a lot easier to determine if a food contains egg or egg products. The laws force manufacturers to list the ingredients on the label. So, if a food does contain egg – you’ll probably see something like “contains egg ingredients” on the label.

Unfortunately, you will still find that many stores carry foods that are prepared in foreign countries that do not require that the ingredients be listed, so you should be especially careful of eating pre-packaged foods that don’t list the ingredients.

How to Make Hair Grow Faster – FAQs

Ladies and Gentlemen, this article is relevant to both of you, so have a quick read. Are you having problems with thinning hair? Do you not have as much self confidence as a few years ago? Well why don’t you get off your backside and take some action? Within this article I will answer a few of the most common questions on how to make hair grow faster. After all, its a pretty widely discussed topic, with many unanswered questions.

1. Do the so called ‘experts’ know what they are talking about? – The answer is of course yes. Some of the methods they are using are revolutionary. But remember, all that research, expensive equipment costs and advertising has to be paid by someone. And it will be the consumer. The other thing you have to remember is that its not in these guys best interest to sell you a cheap product which works. They will want to sell you an expensive product which works, most likely with ongoing payments similar to Rogaine!

2. What should I do with Split Ends? – This mostly applies to women (and men with thinning long hair). These need to be removed, and the hair trimmed as much as possible within the first few weeks. The split ends will run all the way down to budding hair follicles and inhibit new growth. This will be your first step to help make hair grow faster.

3. I have heard of Mira Hair Oil, what is it, and how can it help? – Mira hair oil contains 15 herbs, two of which are Jaswand (Hibiscus) extract and fenugreek extract. These two alone have been proven to have very successful results. The oil will help banish split ends, protect and restore damaged hair and promote fast hair growth by nourishing you hair and scalp, just to name a few! Its a miracle oil to be honest. Very popular in this day and age.

4. What about diet and exercise? – Its a bit of a no brainer really. Of course a healthy diet and frequent exercise will help! Plus you will feel much better about yourself physically and mentally. Your diet will need to consist of plenty of keratinized protein, whilst popping an amino acid capsule each day will also help make hair grow faster.

5. I have heard some of the expensive products contain chemicals, is that true? – Due to the fact there is a massive demand for people wanting to to make hair grow fast, there has been a huge influx of prescription type drugs available to the average Joe Bloggs. Most use pretty harsh chemical to clean the scalp, which in turn helps promote blood circulation and hair growth. Personally, I think its a much better idea to use natural products to do the same thing, even if it takes a touch longer. Less risk of something going wrong and causing more harm than good!

6. What about Money back guarantees? I would make sure (if you are purchasing a product or ebook) that a full moneyback guarantee is available. If an eBook confirm that the product is backed by Clickbank. They will chase money if there is a dispute, and wont promote ‘rip off’ merchants.

People, there you have it. Six FAQs which will hopefully help you on your way. But honestly, they are only scratching the surface.

Cold Water Techniques For Winter Bass Fishing Success

Ask any bass fisherman which season requires the most unique approach to locating bass and invariably the answer will be winter. Winter bass fishing is challenging on many fronts. Anglers must deal with often bitter cold temperatures, frozen-over creeks and much lower fish metabolisms. So with all these obstacles, what can an angler do to improve their chances of hooking up in the winter?

Since largemouth bass are cold-blooded animals, their metabolism is much less in colder water. Metabolism is linked to digestion. This means bass eat less, so making the fishing more difficult. It is much easier to coax a hungry fish into biting lures.

The entire food chain is suffering from lethargy this time of year, due to depleted energy stores. Do not forget that many of the largemouth's essential forage is in hibernation, most notably, crawfish. Animal life is not moving very quickly this time of year, either. Both predator and prey succumb to their metabolism and anglers often forget that their lures and bait must match the general mood of their environment. Work your lures too quickly and you'll be setting off red flags.

Locating largemouth bass in the wintertime requires a good understanding of the seasonal migrations that take place during the year. Generally speaking, bass migrate from the creeks of lakes into the main body of water during the winter. They may be located just inside of tributary arms, but are usually closer to main lake structure.

The reason this migration takes place is well known among experienced anglers. The bass move to deeper water because the water temperatures are more stable. If the bass were to stay shallow, they would be subjecting them to much harsher temperature fluctuations which is difficult for a cold-blooded animal that is seeking a constant environment.

Shad, a main forage of largemouth bass, are very late to dying in cold water. Schools of shad will make the same migrations during early winter, seeking those more stable water temperatures. Where the food goes, the bass will follow. Remember this simple rule and your fishing will improve dramatically.

We know bass are deeper in winter. What presentations are most effective to catch them?

Proven winter bass fishing techniques have one thing in common. They all require you to work your lure close to the bottom. Also, a large percentage of the known effective techniques require a very slow presentation.

If there was a lure that was synonymous with winter bass fishing, it would be the blade bait. There are just a few manufacturers of blade baits, with the two most notable being Bass Pro Shops and Silver Buddy. Silver Buddy is the original and probably most refined blade bait on the market. Essentially this lure is nothing more than a flattened silver piece of metal shaped like a baitfish. When rolled through the water, it has a very tight vibration that is noticeable through the rod. Simply let the Silver Buddy blade bait sink to the bottom and give short twitches back to the boat. The Silver Buddy should touch the bottom after each and every twitch. The goal is the make the lure vibrate during the twitch, but not raise it off the bottom more than a foot at a time.

Another common winter bass fishing tactic is fishing a hair jig. While there are countless styles of hair jigs and hair patterns to choose from, the most effective for winter is the common deertail (bucktail) pattern. Bucktail hair does not breathe in the water as much as other hairs. While most anglers see this as a disadvantage, it is the very reason deertail jigs work so well. Since it has a lifeless appeal, it fits in its surroundings well and is seen as more natural to its environment.

The key to catching bass on hair jigs is in the retrieve. A 1/4 oz. Egypt 3/8 oz. Hair jig is best because it will let you keep the jig close to the bottom where the bass are in winter. Simply cast the hair jig out on 8 to 10 lb. Test fluorocarbon and let it sink to the bottom. You will want to give the jig very small and slow hops back to the boat, never raising the jig off the bottom more than one foot.

Some top winter bass fishing locations to find fish are drop offs, ledges, points and inside channel bends. Locations to avoid are shallow and expansive flats, slowly sloping banks and current-laden areas. Holes are key spots and can often be loaded with hundreds of bass. While largemouth group up in large numbers in winter, very few will be willing to bite. You must cover lots of water until you find one willing to strike.

As you can see, winter bass fishing demands a much different game plan than the other seasons. There are numerous obstacles to contend with, and not all of them are under your control. While you may be able to psych yourself up to catch fish, it is not always possible to psych a winter bass into biting. Cover a lot of water looking for those transition areas where fish can hold in stable water temperatures and you should be able to catch a few during these tough times.

High School Graduation and Depression

With your high school graduation coming up, everyone should make sure to order a high school gowns as some may forget. You may find yourself experiencing more and more periods of depression. Change can cause depression to occur more often and the change from high school student to high school graduate is a pretty big one.

Make sure that you take the time for yourself that you need to. Someone who suffers from depression, whether you are on medication or not, can have a hard time dealing with such life changing events such as your high school graduation. While I am not saying, by any means, that you will have bouts of depression when it comes to leaving high school, as one who suffers from depression myself, I know that it was a hard time to deal with. I know that I had problems with quite a bit of depression when it came to leaving high school and moving on to the big bad world outside.

Take time to yourself and do things that will help to stave off the depression. If you have hobbies that you particularly enjoy, then you can do those more often to help with your depression. While it may not keep your depression away entirely, it may help to keep it at bay. If you enjoy painting, then by all means, spend more time painting and the same goes for things like drawing or writing.

I know that with my love of writing, it has helped me to really work through a lot of my issues when it came to my own high school graduation gowns. Before I started to write about how I was feeling, I was having days and even weeks of really bad depression that I had to really fight to get out of bed and continue to function. Once I started writing nightly, about anything and everything, it really helped. I would write about little things, like the squirrel I saw on the way to school that morning, or how hot one of the guys in my math class was.

While it is not a cure all and will not keep you depression free, it may help to keep things at bay and even get you into a habit and even help to develop your talent for your hobby. By practicing anything you will get better at it and when you enjoy it, it will really help to make you want to practice it.

Take, for example, the fact that before my high school graduation gowns, I started to write and keep a daily journal. I enjoyed it and wanted to do it more, so I started to write about everything I could. I would write poems and short stories. I would write about everything keeping a daily journal. It got me to the point that I wanted to vary my writing, so I get a thesaurus to help me expand my vocabulary. Not, not only do I write for a living, but I also have wide vocabulary that I can use in my writing and something like that doesn’t really disappear like some talents can.
