Psoriasis: the Benefits and the Dangers of the Sun

What do we know about the influence of the sun on psoriasis? Does the sun improve or worsen  psoriasis? Is the affect of the sunlight same in all the people with psoriasis?

The majority of the people with psoriasis (about 95%) report that the exposure to the sun helps them in their psoriasis treatment.

The exception is the people with the so-called summer psoriasis, which is known to get worse in the summer, possibly under the influence of the sun.

The summer psoriasis is also known as the Photoinduced or the Photosensitive psoriasis. This rare type of psoriasis affects about 5% of the people with psoriasis. The so-called summer psoriasis may be the result of the Koebner phenomenon — when the psoriatic lesions are triggered by any kind of skin trauma. Therefore the people with the photosensitive psoriasis should be extremely careful when exposing their skin to the sun.

The UV light in the sun is capable of suppressing the activity of the T cells in the people with psoriasis. Therefore, the sun in moderation is really capable of improving the course of psoriasis in the people with the so-called winter psoriasis.

Many people with psoriasis often go on vacations to the places with a better climate. People, who live in the Northern climate, usually notice a significant improvement in their psoriasis after a stay in a warm sunny Southern climate. Some people with psoriasis even choose to relocate to the places with a better climate.

But unfortunately the sun in excess may become harmful for the people with psoriasis, even for the people with the so-called winter psoriasis, which is known to get better in the summer, under the influence of the sunlight.

The UV light in excess may cause sunburn. Skin traumas are one of the major psoriasis triggers. Any skin trauma, be it cut, a bruise or a burn may cause either the appearance of psoriasis in the genetically predisposed to psoriasis people, or the flare-up of psoriasis in the people with psoriasis.

And thus the sun may become a psoriasis treatment method, as well as a psoriasis provoking factor.

Therefore, if you decide to improve the state of your psoriasis with the sunlight, you should treat the sun just as you would treat any other psoriasis treatment – there has to be a particular scheme, which you should follow while sun tanning.

If you have fair skin, or in the case, you want to be 100% sure that you will not get a sunburn, it is better to suntan in the shade (i.e. under an umbrella) for the first few days.

Apply gentle moisturizing creams after every sun tanning.

It is also known that some medications can make your skin sensitive to the sunlight, for example St. John’s wort, which is sometimes used in holistic medicine for psoriasis treatment.

If you do develop sunburn, you have to stay out of the sun. Even the strongest sunscreen, cannot protect you 100% from the UV light of the sun.

How to Become More Innovative

Can you be more innovative? To be honest, I don’t know. I think 40 percent of the population can never be good at innovating, regardless what they do. The 10% population are born to innovate. They always knew what they want to do and how they can achieve it.

The rest of 50 percent could learn to be good at innovating if they can persuade their brain to ignite their light in the dark, rather than waiting to be rescued by others.

Innovation is not only about technology. You can innovate in any field of work or every aspect of your lifestyle. For example, Facebook and Google treat their employees better than any other company. Management invented a unique way to motivate employees.

So how to become more innovative – Here is how

Observe and ask questions

Make this a habit. Whenever you discover something new, observe and answer three questions.

  • Why would anybody use or buy this service/product?
  • Would you ever purchase this service/product? And why
  • How can improve it?

By answering these questions, you are developing your mind to be more innovative. Don’t be afraid to sound stupid when you answer. You will learn along the way.

Be critical when answering these.

Aim to solve problems

The invention is useless if it cannot solve problems. Every invention in history had a purpose, a way to solve problems.

How to find problems?

  • Talk to people
  • Think about different ways to make life easier
  • Research failed projects and the intention behind it

Once your mind is set to solve problems then you will start generating quality and new ideas. This exercise will make you more innovative.

Think about problems you tackle every day.

List 10 ideas every day

I list ten ideas every morning because that’s when my brain can unleash its full power. You should do it at the time best suits you.

Here is a trick: Don’t think you can’t do it, Just do it. Grab a pen and paper, and start writing your ideas.

It can be anything you like or want to change such as:

  • How to make life easier
  • How to sell more products
  • How to improve business contacts
  • How to improve SMEs profit
  • How to improve health with little spending on personal coaching

List all the ideas you can think of even it has been invented. You might want to improve on an exciting idea.

Let’s do the maths ten ideas a day for the whole year

10×365 = 3,650 ideas a year

If you have over 3,000 bad ideas, 500 ideas are already out there you still have over 100 ideas to choose from.

You only need one idea to take you where you want to be.

Change your attitude

If you want to become an innovator you need to change your attitude.

STOP saying you “can’t”

START saying “can if”

These words should eliminate from your brain if you want to think and become an innovator.

  • “I can’t do it”
  • “It won’t work”
  • “I am not sure”
  • “He/She can do better than me”

When you have a problem or can’t understand things then it is easier to walk. Next when you have a problem or can’t understand do things differently.

  • Start mind mapping on how to solve
  • Learn in a different way
  • Ask for help

From today start to sentences like “I can if… ” rather “I can’t because… “

Take action

You can read thousands of articles, read many books, ask for advice but it will not happen until you take an action.

How many time have you decided to lose weight, read articles about losing weight, asked for advice, and joined the gym.

After one month you did not lose any weight, why? Because you had the knowledge but you never put into action.

Once you have decided it do something, even if you die doing it, it should be fine with you.

Innovators take action. They are committed to their work, ideas, and will stand by it even if they die.

Simply because they believe they can do it.

“Whatever your mind can conceive and believe the mind can achieve regardless of how many times you may have failed in the past.” By Napoleon Hill.

Five Tips To Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night

Having trouble getting your baby to sleep at night? You're not alone. Infancy is a difficult time for babies and their sleep patterns, so it's normal to have some problems with it at first.

5. Make Sure Your Baby is Safe

First, try to figure out if anything is seriously wrong. Although all babies cry at night sometimes, make sure that it is not for a dangerous reason or for a reason that could make your baby uncomfortable during the night. If there is something that can be fixed and made better, your baby will sleep much more easily at night. For example, check to make sure that all the bedclothes are not only comfortable but also safe for sleeping in. There should not be any snaps digging into his or her skin, and it should not cause your baby to become either overheated or chilled. Also, make sure to keep a baby movement monitor under your baby's mattress so you can be alerted right away if your baby stops breathing.

Sometimes babies will cry at night because they've become sick, most commonly with some kind of stuffy nose or cold. In this case, provide him or her with lots of comfort and a gentle medicine or pain relief if necessary. If your child is sick, this could be one of the times that you deviate from a normal sleep plan, but that's okay. Be flexible with your rules if something is truly wrong so that you child can get back to normal more quickly and get some restful sleep.

4. Security Items Can Help Your Baby Feel Comfortable

Security items can help your baby become more comfortable without you during the night. Sometimes babies will wake themselves up and need just a little bit of comfort to get back to sleep. Waking up in a dark, slightly unfamiliar place can be scary for anyone. Provide your baby with one consistent item that can stay in the crib while he or she sleeps. A small tag blank or stuffed animal can help make things a little more familiar and secure-feeling at nighttime. Keep these items with you at first for at least a few hours in order to transfer your "mom smell" onto the item for even more security. For a truly fussy baby who always wants mom to be there, try dabbing a little bit of breast milk onto a small, soft cloth that you baby can sleep with at night. Babies love to use their sense of smell to identify people, especially in the first few months of their lives, so make sure that your personal smell is about something in your baby's crib in order to make it smell like home.

3. Sometimes Babies Need to Cry

Let your baby cry for at least a little while, especially if it looks like your child does not have a specific reason for waking up or being uncomfortable in the crib. Although it may be your immediate response to go comfort your baby yourself, sometimes the best option is not to immediately satisfy his or her comfort needs. By running to hold your baby at night every time he or she wears, you're inadvertently teaching your child that crying will always solve any problems. This means that your child would continue to cry for even less significant nighttime scares. Check to make sure that everything is all right immediately the first time your baby craes. If everything seems to be fine, then rest easy and try to get some sleep. The next time he or she wears, wait just a couple of minutes before you do anything, then make a visit to the crib. If your baby wears again, wait even longer and make this visit shorter.

2. Get Your Baby in a Routine

Start a bedtime routine that will help your baby realize that going to sleep is a different situation with different expectations. Give your baby time get sleepy and to adjust to the thought of going to the crib. Make it a habit for him or her, and your baby will start to become sleepy as soon as the routine is in effect. Let's look at some examples of bedtime routines. Try giving your baby a warm bath, changing his or her diaper, getting into pajamas and then singing a short lullaby. The routine should not take long, but it should give your child enough time to become comfortable enough to go to sleep.

1. Keep a Schedule

Keep a consistent schedule and stick with it. The best thing you can do for your baby is to set some rules and boundaries that do not change. Do not keep your baby up late at night with a lot of noise, and do not allow him or her to even stay awake in the living room with you as you relax for the night. Once a certain time hits, maybe 6 or 7 or 8 pm, it's time for baby to start his or her bedtime routine. Depending on how old your baby is, your child could sleep for up to 16 hours during the entire day. Some of this time will be spending taking naps during waking hours, but at least half that number should be sent sleeping at night. Make sure that your baby is getting enough sleep at night by allowing him or her to go to bed early. Adjust the exact bedtime schedule to you and your family's needs, but remember that your baby should be sleep shortly after it gets dark outside.

About the Malfunction of the Gallbladder

The gallbladder is situated in the upper right side of the abdomen, under the liver and above the duodenum. Its function is to transport the bile produced by the liver into the small intestine when needed. Bile is requested after eating because it is used in the process of digestion. Until then, the bile remains stocked inside the gallbladder.

Sometimes stones can form inside the gallbladder and if they block the bile passage pain, fever and jaundice will install as a sign that something is wrong in the body.

If the doctor thinks that the patient needs to be operated he will tell you that there can be made a keyhole or an open surgery. The keyhole surgery is quite frequently used but is not recommended for those who have scars from other interventions, those who are pregnant and those who have a severe inflammation. The keyhole surgery is performed with the help of the laparoscope. The surgeon will make three or four small incisions inside the abdomen and through those incisions will introduce the laparoscope’s instruments needed for surgery. One of the laparoscope’s instruments has attached an optic video camera which allows the medical team to see what it is inside your abdomen. After that the surgeon will find the gallbladder and will remove it with the help of the other laparoscopic instruments. This operation is known as cholecystectomy. The wounds will be closed afterwards and the patient will be able to leave the hospital after two days.

The open surgery is usually made if the laparoscopic method is not suitable for the patient. The surgeon will make a cut inside the abdomen right under the right ribs in order to perform an open cholecystectomy. Then the gallbladder and the gallstones will be taken out and the surgeon will use X-rays to see if there are any possible gallstones inside the bile ducts and will remove those too. After that the incision will be closed and the patient will remain hospitalized for at least 4 days.

Sometimes people want to think before taking a surgery. This is a good thing because if you are 70 years old this operation could endanger your life. Also you can try other methods of treatment before going to the surgeon. Sometimes the gallstones can be pulled out without removing the gallbladder with the help of a flexible telescope the patient will swallow.

If you must have the surgery done you should get prepared first. You must give up smoking and lose some weight if you are overweight. Also, go to the family doctor and ask for a check up of your other affections. Inside the hospital other special tests might be performed but this depends from hospital to hospital. Take your current medication with you at the hospital but be careful to let the doctor know what pills you are taking before the surgery. Also, if you have no relatives talk to a friend to come with you at the hospital and to stay with you a few days after the surgery.

After the surgery if you had a laparoscopic procedure done, you might feel a little pain where the incisions have been made so be free to ask for some tablets in order to reduce the pain. If you had an open surgery they your pain might be worse and the nurses will give you injections and after a few days they will give you tablets. Due to the anesthetic you might be feeling confused, clumsy and forgetful during the first day after surgery. Try not to make any important decisions in this day.

The nurses will also take care to change daily the wound dressings and at a point the doctor will remove the drain tubes attached to your abdomen. The wounds are free to being washed with soap and water as soon as the dressings have been removed. Feel free to ask for advices from the nurses if you have questions regarding cleaning the wounds. Also, when leaving the hospital do not forget to ask for the sick notes and any additional certificates.

After going home you might be feeling tired and will want to sleep for 2-3 times a day. This is quite normal and you will be able to return to your usual level of activity only after one week in the case of a keyhole surgery or after two months if you have an open surgery. The wound has stitches and you have to go to the hospital to remove them after a few days had passes since the surgery.

Regarding complications they occur quite rarely. If the wound has got infected this problem will be solved with antibiotic drugs in a few weeks. Sometimes there are numb patches around the wounded area but they will clear up in a month or so.

All you need is patience because you can not expect to be as good as new only after a few days had passes since surgery was done.

Starter Clicks But Engine Does Not Turn Over – Tech in Trunk?

If the car’s starter clicks and the engine does not turn over, this could be caused by several things. The most common cause of clicking when the car is being started is a low battery. Most people would assume that the starter is bad if it only clicks, but low-voltage can cause the starter to make this sound.

The battery is the heart of the starting and electrical system. If the battery has been drained or has a weak cell, this can cause the starter to only click. Many times the battery could just been drained due to a door left slightly open, making the dome light stay on. Other times a vanity light or a phone charger could be left on. During my time as a master auto technician, I’ve had a trustworthy co-worker close me up in the trunk so I could make sure the trunk light went off when the trunk was closed!

In order to test the battery it must have a good charge. If the battery is not charged completely the tester will indicate that it needs to be charged before testing can proceed. The first step when checking the starter and electrical system is to make sure the battery is in good condition. Most parts stores will check batteries for free. Once it’s determined the battery is good the rest of the system can then be checked. Loose or corroded connections can also cause a clicking and for the car not to start.

Starter

The starter solenoid on many Ford vehicle’s is on the inner fender well, on most other vehicles the starter solenoid will be mounted on the starter. The clicking that is heard many times is the solenoid. But low-voltage either from a drained battery, bad battery or poor connections can cause this. Most of the time if the vehicle can be jump-started the starter is okay. This would also indicate that the connections to the starter are good.

Alternator

Once the vehicle is running the alternator output can be checked. If the alternator is not charging the battery, it will be drained during the process of starting the car and driving. When the alternator is checked, the voltage and amperage output can be measured. Also the diode pattern will be checked to make sure the alternator won’t drain the battery when the engine is turned off. In the past do-it-yourselfers could disconnect the battery while the vehicle is running to check the alternator, if the car kept running the alternator was good. Doing this on computerized vehicles can be harmful. If the battery is disconnected while a computerized vehicle is running the alternator output can increase sharply allowing excess voltage to spike the computer.

Battery

When purchasing a replacement battery the cold cranking amps required for the vehicle should be checked. It’s best to purchase a battery with more cold cranking amps than the minimum required. Also when purchasing a battery you should consider if you want maintenance free or not. If the battery is hard to access or has a cover then a maintenance free battery is preferred. For instance on some Chrysler Sebrings and Chevrolet Corvettes the battery is located behind an inner fender and on a Chevrolet SSR. the battery is located underneath the bed where the spare tire would normally go. If installing the battery yourself be sure to notice which side is positive and negative in case you were sold the incorrect battery.

Terminals

The terminals should be free of corrosion and should tighten up well. Sometimes especially on import vehicles the battery terminals will be very thin and can have hairline cracks causing a poor connection. Avoid forcing the battery terminals on by tapping them. The battery casing can be damaged causing a leak, if the battery acid seeps out it can cause fast corrosion. If the battery terminal bolts will not tighten, then replacing the terminals is recommended. When the connections are tight you should not be able to twist them by hand.

Raw Food Diet – How it Affects a Person’s Fertility With YANG Constitution in TCM Perspective

I. Introduction
A. What is a typical American raw food diet
The raw food diet is defined as a type of diet of which at least 75% of the daily diet must be unprocessed and uncooked foods or foods can not be heating above 115 degree of Fahrenheit or 40 C, including fresh fruit and vegetables and raw meats. A typical American raw food diet contains mostly yin and dampness pathogen, including mostly raw fruits, vegetables and nuts and seeds.

B. What is a person with yang constitution
According to traditional Chinese medicine, yang constitution is genetic passing through pattern which you inherited from either one of your parent. It represents in the deep layer in your body. A person with yang constitution tend to have
1. Red tongue
2. Red face
3. Constipation
4. Dense menstrual flow
5. Nightmare
6. Prefer cooler drink.
7. Etc

II. How raw foods affect fertility
A person with yang constitution may initially benefit from raw foods diet. Since the body is slightly yang excessive, raw foods help to reduce the yang, thus balancing the yin and yang imbalance. But over a prolong period of raw foods intake, it will cause yang qi imbalance, although, it is not severe than a person with yin constitution.

1. Spleen
Spleen is considered as an organ in aiding the digestive system in absorbing vital nutrients and convert them to energy for the body’s need. Although person with yang constitution may take longer and symptoms may not be as severe as a person with yin constitution, but over a prolong period of time in taking raw food diet, it causes dysfunction of spleen in foods digestion, leading to nutrients deficiency of which triggers the primitive brain function in diverting blood aways from the reproductive organ for energy conversation.

2. Liver
According to traditional Chinese medicine, people with yang constitution can benefit from taking a large amount of raw foods everyday to balance the excessive yang constitution in the body. But unfortunately, prolong period of raw diet deplete the yang constitution, leading to yang deficiency. While spleen is damaged due to prolong intake of raw foods, it interferes with liver function in blood transformation, leading to insufficient blood that required to support our body’ daily activity, causing irregular menstruation and weakening the reproductive organs in perform their function in conception depending how much raw food intake.

3. Blood deficiency
As liver is no longer function as it should be, caused by spleen abnormal function in absorbing nutrients to nourish the production of blood, leading to blood deficiency that triggers the brain primitive reaction from diverting the blood away from the reproductive organs, leading to irregular menstruation. in severe case, it causes absence of period, affecting fertility in women and reducing the sperm quality and quantity in men.

4. Blood and qi stagnation
Since raw foods are considered as dampness pathogen, it impairs the spleen function in controlling the interior damp-cold, resulting in qi and blood stagnation, leading to delay menstruation and menstrual pain and cramps.

5. Kidney Yang deficiency
Kidney is considered as an organ helping to moisten, nourish the organs and tissues. Prolong intake of raw foods may decrease the yang qi in the kidney, leading to symptoms of fluid retention, that interferes with function of lung in absorbing enough oxygen for our body, causing nervous tension such as fatigue, tiredness and loss of memory and reducing the production of progesterone and testosterone, leading to lower sperm count in men and abnormal in the yang phrase in women menstrual cycle.

Life – Blessedness and Happiness

To be blessed is the main source of highest happiness. A great Saint said, "The man of perfect virtues has three sources of happiness: that his parents and siblings are still living, he feels righteous even before God, and he surrounds himself with talented people and is able to educate them. On the street, the happiest thing in the world is to do good deeds, to help others, and to have a satisfied mind. "

Usually people equate happiness with the amount of money they have. If we follow this general statement, the truth also is, the more we have the more we want to have more. When a man has one million bucks, he will want to have two millions bucks and then three, four …. so on until he can become a billionaire. Can money really give happiness?

Recently in early 2008, I met a wealthy woman around fifty years old but she was suffering from advanced stage of cancer of the throat. In her weak spoken words before she died she told me she would be poore than suffering the pain from the treatments. She was undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments at a very expensive private hospital. The treatments caused her throat to be burnt and she could hardly swallow water. I was helpless but learned a lesson that money can not buy good health.

The saying that health is wealth very often was not seriously paid attention to until it is too late. A lot of young people do not bother about health, so they pick up bad habits like smoking and drinking which directly will affect their health later on in life. Some may pick up gambling and flirting or womanizing thinking that will give them happiness. In the end it could be deep mental torture with broken families and tons of regrets instead of money or happiness. Those with plenty of money and still suffering from broken hearts or loneliness will know money can not buy love.

What goes in and out of the mouth is a very important factor that can determine our health and happiness. What we plan and think will affect our mind to make us feel either happy or sad. What we do will make us either a good or a bad person and that determine our happiness or sadness. Basically it is the food we take, the words we speak, the thoughts in our mind and our actions that determine whether we are healthy, happy or sad.

Wisdom is not inborn, it is blessed by Heaven. How to get true wisdom? As a man progresses in life healthily and selflessly with a sincere heart, true wisdom will grow steadily. Physically and mentally he will grow old gracefully with a look people can trust. He will have an outer kindness and inner holiness look. This type of look will gain respect from people because people can see the great virtue in him and he does not be a wealthy man. He will have ample happiness because he has big heart that describes what a generous man he is by people. So the happiest thing in the world is to do good deeds, to help others, and to have a satisfied mind. All these things not necessarily need money to do them.

This is the saying of my Heavenly Teacher, JiGong:

"The butchers kill the visible befits while Tao cultivators perish the invisible beings. What kind of invisible beings? They are greed, anger, ignorance, desire and your worries. When the timing is right, we let go of our bad habits, bad Behaviors and thoughts, then we are on the first stage to attain Buddhahood. Then this knife is the wisdom knife, it is used to cut off all the difficulties and help one another to embark the Dharma Boat and transcend the cycle of life and death.

We all know we should be humble but what is humble? Does it mean we should have manners? We should talk with a lower tone and always think of others as our seniors, be able to tolerate what others are unable to tolerate, only then it is considered to be superior virtue. Keeping humble means we must always be humble, not feeling superior, proud and are low profiled.

The inner merit is the cultivation of your heart. Do you understand your heart? Do you understand yourself? Do you know where your bad habits and temper are? If your heart is not calm, there will be lots of bad things happening. Therefore, the external merit should start from understanding the heart from within. If things are done voluntarily then you will have the rewards and you are worthy of being virtuous.

When your thought moves, it would either be merits or faults, heaven or hell, therefore, you should be careful of your thought. To surpass yourself, merit can be obtained by calming and purifying your heart and not by the number of good things you have done. The true merit is on the perfection of your true nature.

Our body, mouth, eyesight and smile can accumulate virtues! Therefore, virtues exist everywhere like Tao. Tao practicing lies in the minute details of all principles of our behavior.

People who donate money do not need have profits. Some donate money with purpose in mind then there is no merit for them. In contrast, when someone does not donate much, but his sincerity is touched God, that's his merit and virtue.

We should strive ourselves to be able to stand straight to everything in the world. We should perform real donations. The body donation – do everything practically; The heart donation – maintain sincerity; The word donation – what we said should be in accordance with the ultimate truth and; The facial donation – get along with others with joy and smile. The Not-So-Common Cold

How on earth can there be such a term as "the common cold". My colds, I have found, are quite common. Some sneak in and I go from well to sick in a flash. Others begin with sneezing and a runny nose and then they burst into hacking coughing spasms. At other times I cough a little with nose dripping but I feel flat out awful. As I glance around and listen to others with colds, I find that we have far less in common than we do in common. As a result of this observation I now state that colds are unique to the time and to the individual. The "common cold" is a phantom of the imagination.

Beginning in junior high I started having a continuously runny nose. It seemed that no matter how healthy or ill I felt, my nose just liked to drip. Kleenexes became the joke as I filled every pocket, purse, and cranny. I marvel that this habit persists to this day. Research says that the drip probably reflected allergies but I have to wonder about this in the dead of winter and an on-going stream regardless of where I traveled, even overseas. Then three or four times each year the runny nose erupt into a cold. At least one of these was accompanied by a horrendous cough, aches and pains, or a low-grade fever. Having had my tonsils extracted when I was four I avoided repeating bouts of tonsillitis, but I did have frequent painful sore throats.

As I moved into adulthood the regular pattern continued until my children started daycare and public school. Of course they each took turns contracting the virus of the day and generously bought it home to share. As I was teaching junior high at the time, I lugged home my fair share of germs as well. We took on a coughing / healthy arrangement, tossing illness from one non-eager participant to another. My two sons, my daughter, and I dialed for the worst cough versus the most days of great health. While often a trip to the doctor helped my three children, it was a rare day that anything worked for me other than some very strong cough syrup. And my husband, bless his soul, refused to be sick even for a day.

When I turned 60, the kids had all left the house, I worked in schools only on a volunteer basis, and excellent health restored. At first I credited my life style change to my fresh vigor and then I ascribed it to my flu shot. Sometimes I added the fact that I ate well, paying attention to partake of only high-quality, nutritious foods. I exercised, dressed warmly or lightly as the weather dictated. And for about three years colds rendered just once a year, and with a few days of extreme rest, I could beat them in 7 to 10 days. I had discovered my personal Fountain of Health.

However, 2015 has reintroduced cold season at its finest. I chopped through January with a terrible cold that began on New Year's Day and only let up at the end of the month. I reduced exercise and increased rest, but it lingered all the same. February seemed better until near the end when my old friend returned and exhaustion and coughing renewed their power. By mid-March I was on my feet once again and ready to launch into all the projects that I had not been able to complete as I had reclined in recuperation mode. After two weeks of health, guess what? My cold returned, this time with a wacking that scared even me. A Half marathon had to be canceled (and if you are a runner you realize the anguish this caused!) And I took to cozy couch and bed yet again.

April is upon me as my nose blowing endures and my cough is ever-present. I force myself into action when non-action feet counterproductive, and then I lapse into a huddled heap yet again. The common cold, so uncommonly original in each of my bouts, has usurped my health yet again. Oh, how a long for the next few weeks to melt away so that this cold will disappear and maybe late spring and summer will revitalize my zest and drive the drips to extinction. In the meantime, rest and Kleenex are constant companions.

Breast Cancer: Causes and Prevention

Cancer has been one of the leading illnesses in our present time. In fact, in the latest report from Reuters, patients infected with this disease has increased by 8.2M in the year 2012. One of the leading cancer illnesses that has been reported is breast cancer.

In the U.S. alone, it has been found that patients with this illness has reached 697,020 and these are both male and female patients. The leading cause that led to the said illness is the change in the lifestyle of people.

What are the causes of breast cancer?

Doctors and Physicians are still clueless as to the exact cause of this illness. However, they have come with several possible reasons why one person would develop such an illness. Among these are:

  • Getting older – the older a woman gets, the higher is her risk of developing the illness
  • Genetics – women who have a close relative who has/had breast or ovarian cancer are more likely to contract this cancer.

The majority of breast cancer patients however, are not hereditary. Women who carry the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have a considerably higher risk of developing breast and/or ovarian cancer. These genes can be inherited. TP53, another gene, is also linked to greater breast cancer risk.

  • Previous Breast Cancer Patients
  • Having had certain types of breast lumps
  • Dense breast tissue
  • Estrogen exposure
  • Obesity
  • Height
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Radiation exposure
  • HRT (hormone replacement therapy)
  • Cosmetic implants

Since there is no specific cause for breast cancer, it is best to find ways on how to prevent acquiring the said illness. Here are some of the possible ways for you to prevent contracting the disease.

1. Exercise – There is nothing more important that providing proper exercise as part of our daily routine.

For one to be able to prevent contracting cancer, they must get supplements that contain high ORAC values or in order words, a lot of anti-oxidants. There are a lot of anti-oxidant supplements out in the market today and among them are the following:

– Gluthatione

– Mangosteen

– Moringa

– Goji Berry

What’s the Difference Between Walk-In and Urgent Care Clinics?

Walk-in and urgent care clinics are being utilized more than ever instead of the traditional emergency room or even a doctor’s office. Although, they share some similarities there are differences between the two facilities and what they might provide.

Walk-In Clinic

Walk-in Clinics are intended to serve the underinsured and uninsured, providing a slightly more affordable option for basic medical treatment services than a visit to a urgent care clinic or emergency room. They are intended to offer treatment for common or non-life-threatening conditions or illness such as the common cold or a bad headache. These can include minor injuries like sprains and burns and minor infections such as pink eye, bladder, sore throat and sinus, skin rashes and upset stomachs. Some clinics may offer vaccinations, routine physicals, STD prevention and pregnancy tests. Convenience is the number one reason most people visit a walk-in clinic because they do not take appointments, care is provided on a first-come/first-served basis. If you are looking for a clinic where you don’t have to make an appointment and can save the most money, a walk-in clinic is probably for you.

Urgent Care Clinic

Urgent care clinics are somewhat similar to walk-in clinics but with enhanced capabilities on site. They can treat more serious injuries and illnesses, and are designed to take some of the financial burdens off more pricy emergency care services. Hours are extended and weekend appointments are usually available. Urgent care clinics use physicians and can administer IVs, provide x-rays, and treat minor to moderate severe trauma for non life threatening conditions such as deep lacerations or broken bones. If you like the feeling of knowing you will get seen in a reasonable amount of time and want a place that’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for scheduling an appointment for medical care, then an Urgent Care Clinic is probably for you.

In conclusion, walk-in clinics can help you if you are in need of care during regular business hours, have minor to moderate injuries and illnesses and don’t have time to schedule an appointment. Urgent care clinics can help you if you are in need of care for more serious injuries or illnesses, they are available 24/7 and appointment setting is available. If you are experiencing a cold or something minor during regular business hours of the day, either can service your illness but might have a slight variance in the price.

The Connection Between Stretch Marks and Wrinkles

Stretch marks and wrinkles may sound like two separate problems. But the truth is, a lot of people actually experience both at one time. Stretch marks are visible, faint white lines usually found in the thighs, buttocks area, abdomen, arms and legs caused by excessive stretching of the skin. All the stretching eventually leads to the tearing of the middle layer of the skin, also referred to as the dermis.

These ugly, unsightly and itchy marks often develop due to a number of factors, which include pregnancy, puberty, bodybuilding, rapid weight gain or loss and genetic inheritance. So what is the connection between stretch marks and wrinkles? Basically, these lines and marks, an uneven skin tone, wrinkles and scars are all a result of a lack of collagen.

If your body is able to make more collagen, then you are unlikely to develop any of these skin problems. When there is a loss or breakdown of elastin and collagen, the streaks or nasty lines basically show through to the top layer of the skin, or epidermis. This is why there are anti-aging and creams today that naturally encourage the production of collagen of the skin.

Studies have also indicated that skin problems are a result of a raised level of certain hormones (glucocorticoids) in the bloodstream. These affect the skin by preventing collagen and elastin fibers to form. Studies have also indicated that some individuals are more genetically vulnerable to stretch marks and wrinkles-skin type may be a factor, as dryer skin types have less flexibility compared to oily skin.

Natural Gout Remedies – Part 1

For years, gout has been treated with powerful drugs. The downside to the drugs is frequent and sometimes dangerous side effects. Some experts believe that the drugs can even make the condition worse in the long run. Because of this, many people choose alternative remedies and therapies to relieve the symptoms of gout.

The Cherry Theory There are a host of alternative supplements, remedies, and therapies for gout. One theory that has been widely discussed is the use of cherries to help eliminate the symptoms. Experts who believe in this theory recommend eating half a pound of cherries a day, whether canned, frozen, or fresh. It is believed that dark berries, like blueberries, blackberries, and cherries, may contain chemicals that lower uric acid and reduce inflammation.

Muraleedharan Nair, the lead researcher of the ‘cherry project’ at Michigan State University, explains, “Twenty cherries provide 25 milligrams of anthocyanins, which help to shut down the enzymes that cause tissue inflammation in the first place so cherries can prevent and treat many kinds of pain.”

More research is being done to determine the real health benefits of cherries. At least it’s an easy, appetizing consumption. Many gout sufferers opt for the recommended daily dose of cherries with cherry juice or concentrate. I can easily polish off half a pound of frozen cherries in a smoothie with soy milk, or with some cashew nuts in the food processor as a frozen dessert.

Natural Supplements

You may be wondering about natural supplements and creams that claim to relieve the pain instantly. Of course, ‘quick cures’ sound great to anyone with an acute gout attack but most of these products are worthless and expensive. However, there are few worth considering:

DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide) and MSM (methylsulfonylmethane)

These are natural remedies considered effective for gout. DMSO is an industrial solvent and it was discovered in the 1960s that it could penetrate human skin and was shown to relieve pain and swelling, relax muscles, relieve arthritis, improve blood supply, and slow bacteria growth. It is extensively used in sports medicine for obvious reasons.

MSM is a naturally occurring substance found in plants, dairy products, meats, fruits, and vegetables. It is an odorless, tasteless, soluble crystalline solid in its pure form.

Once DMSO or MSM is used (in capsule, powder, or cream forms), the pain is supposed to disappear within minutes, though not enough scientific study has been conducted to verify the benefits. DMSO should not be used during an acute gout attack, as it can make the gout “quite angry.”

Bee Venom

Another supplement still under study is the use of bee venom to reduce swelling and inflammation. This form of treatment has been around for thousands of years but at this time there is not substantial medical proof that it helps conditions of arthritis.

Natural Remedies

Many natural remedies, often born in folk tradition, have been attributed to easing the symptoms of gout for various reasons. Following is a list of alternative home remedies though in many cases there is no scientific proof about their effectiveness. Still, they are cost-effective and generally harmless. But before using these remedies, consult your physician or a practitioner trained in the use of health supplements so that you understand appropriate doses and any associated risks such as interactions with medications and so forth.

Apple cider vinegar

While it certainly provides many health benefits, there are mixed opinions about the effectiveness of apple cider vinegar on gout. The theory is that the vinegar changes the blood pH so that the crystals will go into the solution and be excreted. Two tablespoons a day is recommended. If you can’t stomach it plain, try adding the cider to a glass of water with a teaspoon of honey.

Bilberry

Bilberry contains compounds called anthocyanidins and flavinoids which are helpful for gout as these substances reduce uric-acid levels and slow down tissue destruction. Both the leaves and berries can be taken as a pill or tea, or the berries can be chewed, stewed, or made into jam.

Celery seeds

These seeds are primarily used as a diuretic to promote the excretion of urine. Lab studies have also found that compounds in celery seed and its essential oil may help reduce muscle spasms, calm the nerves, and reduce inflammation. Some experts claim the seeds alleviate the pain associated with gout.

Chinese Tiger Balm

This herbal, topical preparation is used to lessen the pain of rheumatism. The preparation contains aromatic oils of camphor, menthol, peppermint, clove, and cajeput (an East Indian oil) that increases blood flow to the surface skin. For relief, massage the painful area with Tiger Balm for up to fifteen minutes, three or four times a day.

In Part 2 of this article, you will learn about turmeric, stinging nettle, juniper berry, gravel root, Devil’s Claw, and dandelion root as natural gout remedies.

Do You Have Swollen Liver?

Swollen liver is a term some people use to describe what doctors call doctors call enlarged liver or hepatomegaly. The expressions swollen liver and enlarged liver are self-explanatory. So the question becomes, what causes hepatomegaly, and how much of a risk to liver health is it? This article will provide answers to those questions.

It’s important to point out that swollen liver is not a disease itself. It is a sign of some other liver-related problem or condition.

When a liver condition first appears, there are ordinarily no symptoms. This is true of liver swelling too. But as the disease that’s causing the swelling grows worse, signs will begin to appear.

Generally, a human liver weighs between 3 to 4 pounds or 1.5 kg. It is similar to a wedge in shape, and in most normal adults, about the size of a small American football. It can be found near the bottom of the rib cage on the right side of the body.

Enlarged liver is often the result of one or a combination of causes. One is hepatitis, which is usually caused by a virus, but can also be caused by excessive use of alcohol. The other most common cause, cirrhosis, is usually the result of excessive use of alcohol.

Liver infections and cancer are frequent causes of swollen liver also. Liver infections often accompany diseases such as malaria and mononucleosis.

Fatty liver disease, in which fat accumulates in the liver and damages it, is another common cause of an enlarged liver.

The initial phase in treating swollen liver is to isolate the root of the problem. If hepatomegaly is the result cancer or an infection, your physician will want to treat these disorders as soon as possible.

When swollen liver is the result of cirrhosis caused by drinking or alcoholic, any use of alcohol must be stopped immediately. If an enlarged liver is not linked to alcohol abuse or a liver-related disease, your doctor will probably recommend that you make some lifestyle changes. Diet and exercise are helpful in both treating and preventing liver swelling.

If you believe you are at risk for an enlarged liver, there are some recommendations for helping you prevent it.

If you use alcohol a lot, either limit your consumption or stop completely. If you don’t stop completely, never to take medicine at the same time. Doing so may irreparable damage to the liver.

Never take drugs or supplements unless they are approved by your doctor, and never exceed the recommended doses. Also consult your doctor before you try herbal supplements you have not taken before. Certain supplements are capable of damaging the liver. You should also be careful with vitamins because certain combinations of vitamins can hurt the liver.

Be doubly careful around cleaning materials, insect killers and other chemicals. If you work with these substances, take care that you are in a well-ventilated area. Some common chemicals and cleaning materials may be particularly risky for the liver.

Allergies – Forms and Treatment

It is estimated that about fifty million Americans are allergic to one or more things. Our body's immune system produces antibodies when it mistakes any harmless substance or allergen as an intruder. These antibodies are produced to defend the body against the substances mistakenly regarded as offenders. The cells around the affected areas also produce histamine and other chemicals. The release of histamine can result in sneezing, hives, itchiness and other known allergic reactions. These allergic reactions usually appear in areas of the body where the allergen comes to.

Among the most common types of allergies are food allergies, allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma and allergic contact dermatitis. Each of these types has its own specific symptoms and probable form of treatment.

It is estimated that about 100 Americans are killed each year due to food allergies. Studies show that only 1 to 2 percent of all adults with allergies are suffering from true food allergies. The most common food allergens are milk, eggs, fish, peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, almonds and cashew. It is estimated that about 3 million Americans are allergic to peanuts and tree nuts – the number one causes of food allergy deaths. People suffering from food allergies may experience swilling and tingling of the lips. There may be itchiness, hives or rashes occurring in any part of the body. Additionally, those suffering from food allergies may also feel bloating, abdominal cramps, gas, diarrhea and vomiting.

In severe cases, food allergies can be life threatening. Fortunately, this is rarely the case. If you have known food allergies, the best treatment is to avoid the offending food sources. Otherwise, antihistamines may be administered for mild reactions. Corticosteroid creams may be used to treat skin rashes. For life-threatening reactions, an injectable epinephrine such as EpiPen may save your life. Allergy shots can also be administered especially if drugs do not work, or if you are unable to avoid the allergens.

Allergic rhinitis is a form of allergy which affects one in seven Americans. This form of allergy may occur during a specific season as in hay fever. This can also be perennial, meaning it can be a whole year round condition. Both types however, exhibit similar symptoms. Hay fever is commonly caused by pollen from trees (usually during the spring season), grasses and ragweed. On the other hand, perennial allergies are triggered by indoor allergens like dust mites, feathers, mold spores and pet dander. The most common symptoms of allergic rhinitis are itchiness, watery eyes, sneezing, sore throat and stuffy nose. Allergic rhinitis is commonly treated with antihistamines, decongestants and inflammatory sprays.

Allergic asthma is perceived to be a potentially hazardous disease. Once a person with allergic asthma is exposed to offending allergens, breathing difficulty may silence. This is often elicited by allergens such as pollen, spores, mold, feathers, pet dander and cockroach droppings. Allergic asthma is characterized by coughing, wheezing, tightness of the chest and shortness of breath. Bronchodilators are the treatment of choice during allergic asthma attacks. These function to widen the patient's airways and halt sudden attacks.

Skin contact with allergens like poison ivy, skin care products, jewelries and a person's saliva can trigger allergic contact dermatitis. Common symptoms are itchy, dry, red skin patches with blisters. Corticosteriod creams are used to treat the mild forms of contact dermatitis. Oral corticosteroids may be administered for severe cases.

Finally, allergies affect both children and adults. It is observed that adults hardly ever outgrow their allergies completely. However, the symptoms may become less and less severe with time. Others also develop allergies as they grow older. The best defense against allergies is through avoidance of the known allergens.
