What's the Difference Between a Gluten Allergy, Intolerance, Sensitivity and Celiac Disease?

There are lots of confusing messages out there about Gluten Intolerance or Gluten Sensitivity or Gluten Allergy. You may be wondering if you have any of these.

Gluten is the protein found in all WHEAT products, BARLEY, OATS and RYE. It is comprized of two proteins Gliadin and Glutenin. It is the product that makes bread and cakes light and fluffy.

Gluten Sensitivity is the all-encompassing terminology used to describe a whole range of reactions and conditions where gluten is the culprit. These ranges from the auto-immune disease of Celiac Disease, to wheat allergies, to skin ailments, asthma, migraines and autism.

The most serious of these is Gluten Sensitive Enteropathy or as it is more commonly known as Celiac disease (Celiac Disease). Celiac disease is not an allergy to gluten, like a wheat allergy is. It is in fact an auto-immune disease, where the body mistakenly attacks its own tissues seeing them as a foreign substance. When a person with Celiac Disease eats any food containing gluten, the body reacts to those proteins found in the gluten and attacks the small finger like projections in the small intestine called villi, then preventing absorption of food. The symptoms are not immediate, but usually take a while for the reactions to occur and then the gut becomes slowly damaged.

This leads to all sorts of digestive problems, including bloating, diarrhea, flatulence, anemia and weight loss. Celiac Disease can be diagnosed by blood tests, which check for the antibodies (IgG and IgA) to those proteins and by a biopsy of the small intestine (done by gastrocscopy), which can see the flattened villi of the small intestine. Very often someone who thinks they may have a problem with gluten cuts it out of their diet, making diagnosis very difficult. Always maintain your usual diet until all tests have been confirmed.

A Wheat allergy or Gluten Allergy on the other hand is an immune response to eating wheat / gluten, in the same way that someone may have an allergy to peanuts. The symptoms can range from hives, eczema, asthma, migraine or even anaphylaxis. It is caused by an immune response of IgE antibodies. These are usually very quick reactions and can happen in a matter of minutes. There are fifty different proteins in gluten that one can react to so there can be a reaction to any one of them. The diagnosis for this is a skin prick test to test for allergic response.

Many people with a whole range of conditions find that gluten or wheat on its own may be the culprit of certain disorders even without a true allergy or celiac disease. One may have a reaction to gluten that although not register an immune response in the body, it can still make you ill. These are not allergies, but are idiopathic reactions (we do not know the cause). Even though the body reacts to gluten, there is no damage to the small intestine.

Once Celiac disease and an IgE allergy response is ruled out, but a reaction to gluten occurs, we term this a Gluten Intolerance. In many ways similar to a lactose intolerance and in fact many people find they may have both.

One of the main symptoms of this is chronic fatigue and chronic pain. Some people also find that their migraines worsen on gluten, as do skin ailments, sinus problems and other digestive disorders as well as autism and other neurological disorders. There is no test for this, the only way to check for it, is an elimination diet. There is no research known as to whether an intolerance now, can lead to Celiac Disease later in life.

So it is important to get a diagnosis, to work out which is your body's response to gluten, so that a correct eating plan and treatment can be followed.

Alkaline Foods Chart A Guide For Healthier Living

The alkaline foods chart is a good guide for a healthy living. Various foods contribute to the PH balance of the body. When this balance is broken, the body reacts negatively. An unhealthy body affects a healthy life. The alkaline foods chart is a good determining factor whether the food you are eating gives your body what it needs.

The alkaline foods chart tells you how to alkalize your body. It groups food into two different categories. These are alkalizing foods and acidifying foods. It is necessary to know whether what one is eating is high in acid or high in alkaline because the body’s well being highly depends on this.

A highly acidic body is an unhealthy body. This is shown by different symptoms. These symptoms may be in the beginning phase, the intermediate phase, or the advance phase.

In the beginning phase of a highly acidic body, you will notice that a person begins to constantly feel muscular pains, cold hands and feet, joint pains that travel all over the body, dizziness, heartburn, and panic attacks. Mild headaches, irregular or rapid heartbeat, cramping, or even sensitivity to odor begins to build up.

The intermediate phase gives you worse feelings of headaches or migraine, swelling, and numbness and tingling feeling. There may also be a loss of concentration, loss of memory, or feeling of depression. Most of the time as well, there will be an appearance of fungal, viral or bacterial infections, and disturbance on taste, smell, vision, and hearing.

The advance phase may already be in a form of cancer, schizophrenia, learning disability, leukemia, tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and many other.

A highly alkalized body, on the other hand, has many advantages. First, it prevents certain kinds of diseases and sickness because diseases or sickness do not really thrive in a highly alkalized body. It also raises the level of immunity. Second, without these diseases and sickness, you can live a happy, fruitful, and healthy life. Third, with a healthy body, you can take control of your future.

But in order to do these, you should monitor the food that you eat through the alkaline foods chart. The alkaline foods chart gives you a list of vegetables, fruits, and other food that will help alkalizing the body. Once you start doing so, you will notice its immediate effect.

So make it a habit to use the alkaline foods chart Eat healthy, have a healthy body, and live a fulfilling life. If you want to learn more about alkaline foods chart visit http://acidalkalinediet.org

Ten Healthy Reasons To Give Up Soda

First, some interesting soda facts:

The first commercial soft drinks were produced in the 17th century from water and lemon juice sweetened with honey.

In 1881: The first cola-flavored beverage was introduced.

In 1885: Charles Aderton invented “Dr Pepper” in Waco, Texas.

In 1886: John S. Pemberton invented “Cola” in Atlanta, Georgia.

In 1898: “Pepsi-Cola” is invented by Caleb Bradham.

In 1899: The first patent issued for a glass blowing machine used to produce glass bottles for soda manufacture.

In 1913: Gas motored trucks replaced horse-drawn carriages as delivery vehicles for bottled soda.

If you have ever heard the rumor that cola once contained cocaine, this is actually true. Research indicates that only trace amounts were used and at the time the dangers of cocaine were unknown. Cocaine was not an illegal substance then and it was used in many feel-good “tonics,” which is what Coca was originally meant to be. It was also added to get the cola-drinker addicted to the product. (That is the opinion of this author).

In 1969 it was reported that babies in Zambia had become malnourished because their mothers fed them Cola and Fanta, believing it was the best thing they could give their children. Around the time 54% of the seriously malnourished children admitted to the children’s hospital at Ndola, Zambia had “Fantababy” written on their progress charts. The Zambian government subsequently banned Fanta advertisements “because of their influence on the poor”.

Americans drink 13.15 billion gallons of carbonated drinks every year, and the average American drinks 57 gallons of soft drinks in a year. High-fructose corn syrup is used in sodas and soft drinks as a sweetener due to its low cost.

Sodas provide the human body with empty calories that lack any nutrients, and these calories are generally converted into fat. Sodas also rob the body of nutrients by replacing milk, juices and water, and soft drink consumption is thus associated with lower intake of numerous vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. Participants in a study of school children, who had high soft drink consumption, consumed less milk and fruit juice compared with those whose soft drink intake was low.

Studies have indicated that intake of cola is associated with low bone density in females. The phosphate content of some sodas is very high, and this leads to high phosphate and low calcium levels in the blood. When phosphate levels are high and calcium levels low, calcium is pulled out of the bones.

Soft drinks are the leading source of added sugar in the diet and exceed the recommended total sugar consumption. A 330 ml can a day of soda translates to more than one pound of weight gain every month. A study of children concluded that regular soft drink consumption might put some young children at a greater risk for obesity.

Another study at the Department of Nutrition, Harvard School of Public Health, indicates that a greater consumption of soft drinks is associated with weight gain and obesity. Obesity also contributes to other health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and foot problems.

The latest research on diet sodas suggest they do not assist in weight loss, in fact by stimulating appetite they contribute to weight gain.

Consumption of soft drinks is associated with weight gain and an increased risk for development of type 2 diabetes by providing excessive calories and large amounts of rapidly absorbable sugars.

Kidney Stones

Results in a human study demonstrate increased urinary magnesium, citrate, and oxalate levels after cola consumption, which could contribute to kidney stone formation. Another study proved that consumption of cola causes unfavorable changes in the risk factors associated with calcium oxalate stone formation.

Toxic Artificial Sweeteners

Perhaps the worst ingredients in sodas are the artificial sweeteners aspartame, acesulfame K and Sucralose that are a serious health hazard despite FDA reassurances.

Findings from a study of adults suggest that sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption is associated with high levels of uric acid, which may significantly increase the risk of gout.

Dental Decay

Studies have proved that soft drink consumption erodes dental enamel. Results of a study of children’s teeth suggest that consumption of carbonated soft drinks is a risk indicator for dental caries.

Sodas contain caffeine, which in high dosages can cause high blood pressure, dehydration, gastrointestinal disturbance, irritability, restlessness, tension, insomnia, excessive urination, irregular heartbeat, and other side effects.

Colas have an acidic pH of 2.5, the pH scale ranges from 0 to 14 for most liquids, with 0 being the most acidic and 14 being the most alkaline.

A recent study conducted at the University of California in San Francisco on 9,000 women showed that those who have chronic acidosis are at greater risk for bone loss than those who have normal pH levels. Mild acidosis can lead to heartburn, fatigue, immune deficiency, gout, and candida. Cancerous cells thrive in an acidic environment.

The latest research on diet sodas suggest they do not assist in weight loss, in fact by stimulating your appetite they contribute to weight gain.

Aspartame is used in most diet sodas in place of corn syrup. The components of aspartame may cause brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, migraines, panic attacks, dizziness, irritability, nausea, intestinal discomfort, skin rash, nervousness, depression and male infertility.

If you are overweight or at risk for heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, or kidney disease, limit your intake of sugar sweetened beverages. Water makes a wonderful zero-calorie substitute.

Rapid Cycling in Bipolar Disorder

Rapid cycling is not a fast ride on a unicycle, though it might certainly be close the experience. The fact is this is the most disabling type of bipolar disorder and the most difficult to treat. During such episodes people are more likely to need hospitalization and are most at risk for suicide.

Most people with bipolar disorder will have one episode of major depression or mania in a year. Some folks have episodes of mania, hypo-mania or depression four or more times with in a year. Cycling between them may occur as frequently as days or hours. Other conditions may seem like rapid cycling but without the full number of symptoms that define either depression or mania. Examples include withdrawal from alcohol or drugs, PTSD, emotional liability in response to life events, traumatic brain injury or even brain tumors.

Interestingly, rapid cycling is more likely to occur in those with bipolar II disorder. Fifty-per-cent of individuals with bipolar disorder will have at least one episode of rapid cycling in a lifetime. In most cases this condition is temporary and more typical frequency of highs and lows occurs. Ten per cent of bipolar patients will have this condition exclusively.

Rapid cycling is more likely to occur when people are first diagnosed with bipolar disorder as treatment might be delayed. On the other hand treatment with too much antidepressant not only can lead to mania but also rapid cycling. Emphasis should be on a combination of a mood stabilizer such as lithium or lamictal with an antidepressant.

One theory is called kindling. Initially a major life stressor may lead to depression or mania and as time goes by lesser and lesser stressors may lead to this condition. The second theory involves too frequent interruption of circadian rhythm such as when changing time zones occurs too frequently as in bipolar businessman who fly frequently. Seasonal affective disorder may lead to rapid cycling in areas of dramatic shifts between long nights and long days such as far longitudes. The anxiety associated with both theories often involves insomnia for which a benzodiazeping may be required.

Some terms relating to frequency of depression and mania include ultra fast mood swings when episodes occur in a matter of days and ultra-ultra rapid cycling when mania and depression occur within a single day. Note: When this happens seek medical help immediately.

The treatments for this are the same as for typical bipolar disorder but may require frequent adjustments by a psychiatrist on a weekly basis and with easy access by phone in between if necessary. In an ideal world the above would be easy but in this day and age of limited visits by health insurances, lack of accessibility to health insurance as in Medi-Caid or medically indigent adults makes this not an ideal world indeed. One can get care for labile diabetes or heart failure much more readily than for psychiatric disorders in general.

Panic Attacks and Public Speaking

I read once that some people would rather be everywhere, even in their coffin, than have to speak in public. I think that takes the fear to an extreme, but it makes the point, if a little dramatically, that most people do indeed dread the call to speak in public.

I will start off by saying that I am a cured sufferer of all sorts of anxiety disorders and also did a lot of public speaking, so I definitely have a foot in both camps and understand the issue very well. My disorder lasted nearly 13 years, during which time I amassed a wealth of experience, a lot of it my own course, but also a lot gleaned from respected authorities and fellow sufferers.

Most people who you see public speaking exude ultimate confidence, but trust me when I tell you that is not always the case, and what you are seeing is the serene swan gliding along the water, but what you are not seeing is all the frantic actively Underneath the water.

My public speaking was always proceeded by extreme anxiety, even when I did not have my disorder. There was even a time when younger that I was so petrified by the thought of public speaking that I would have done anything to get away from having to do it. I beat it by putting myself into situations where I had to public speak and ultimately cured my phobia that way. However, even today I still get the same anxiety rush, I just have learned to channel it tp help me to speak better, and that is some of what I will cover here.

Before I do, I want to cover a little of what the anxiety disorder sufferer can do to handle things when they have to speak in public. Their fear is manifested by the fact that they believe, or fear, they will have an attack during their speech and be publicly ridiculed. They fear they will be in the public glare, their disorder exposed to all and sundry, and with nobody to help or rescue them. Those fears have got to be shown to be groundless, which of course they are.

There are techniques which can be learned to give them the tools to fight this fear and I will use the following as an example of one such technique. It is generally the "getting going" which is the worst part of the speech to overcome, and it's the fear of fear which needs breaking down. Generally, when people can get into their stride so to speak, all will go well.

What I used to do, immediately I stood up, was to get some sort of reaction or interaction with the audience. Perhaps ask them the lighting OK for them, or did my microphone work ok, ask them if it was not too loud or, the simplest of all, they could all see me properly. You see what that did to put me IN CONTROL. And that is one of the biggest fears which public speakers must overcome. They feel they will be trapped in the limelight like a moth in the flame and will have no control over what is happening to them.

Find some way to assert control. Just as the person who can handle a skidding car will have no problems with driving in bad weather conditions, because they believe they are in control no matter what happens, so it is with public speaking and panic attacks. They should be mutually exclusive.

No injury will befall the public speaker. It is not dangerous to get up and talk in public. You will not be shot on sight. No person from the audience will attack you. Your clothes will all not suddenly fall off leaving you naked. You may well be smiling now while reading this, but I know personally of people who have had such phobias and fears.

Another way to be in control is to prepare properly, know in advance exactly what you are going to say, have a prompt card to keep you on track, all geared towards asserting your control, TO YOURSELF.

The one thing I learned when I had my anxiety disorder was that I needed to find the root cause of the disorder in order to rid myself of it. The same applies to the fear of public speaking, and / or the fear of having an anxiety attack while giving the speech.

Go to the root cause, address that and the anxiety will disappear. By anxiety here I mean the anxiety disorder. In a lot of cases, being angry before giving a speech will actually ensure one does a good job. Ask anyone in the public eye, even well known celebrities, and they will all admit to having real nerves before appearing in public, and in fact some never get over those fears. What they do however is learn how to use the adrenalin rush which the anxiety creates to their own advantage, making them even better performers as a result.

And that is what the fear of public speaking can do also ie make you perform even better if you feel you are in control, and you can learn how to do that

Modified Yoga Gives Relief for Depression and Anxiety

I have been teaching yoga for twenty-two years. I got into yoga at that time, because I was suicidal, not just depressed. During that time period, my state of mind, was so down, that I began to daydream constantly, on how to kill myself. My friend dragged me to my first yoga class, and insisted, that yoga would help with my emotions. I resisted by saying, “How can yoga help with your emotions?” I had done other exercises, and other fitness classes. I was a runner, I played volley ball, basketball, tennis, and I did all sorts of fitness work outs. I threw myself into weights, crunches, and sit ups. I was plagued with worry, guilt, rage, insomnia, depression, and sorrow. Nothing had helped my state of mind, until yoga. Yoga truly saved my life. Now twenty-two years later; I’m dedicated yoga teacher, with a passion to motivate, those who are; depressed or suicidal; and I urge them to come, to experience, the yoga difference.

From the very first class that I tried, yoga was hard for me. The poses weren’t that difficult to follow, but my hamstrings, hips and back muscles were super tight, and the stretching was painful for me. The breathing was contrary to breathing in working out, where you breathe out, through your mouth, to maintain the power of the work out. In yoga, by comparison, you breathe continuously through your nose. You take deep breaths in, that expand out your belly, and sometimes, you hold the breath for several seconds. I was determined to figure yoga out.

The movements were slow and thoughtful. The repetitions of the movement felt monotonous. Yoga worked on your strength, and you had to hold poses, such as downward dog, or plank pose, or an inversion pose, for several looonnngggg moments.

Why does modified yoga work to relieve depression and anxiety? I feel that it’s a combination of elements. First, modified is an easier yoga class, than a regular beginner’s class. I personal share myself, and I encourage clients to do exactly what each can do in my class. There is an acceptance, and spirituality that is present in a restorative or modified yoga class. The space in itself is a very calming, and not intimidating.

Yoga teaches you to fully dwell in the present moment. To do the poses well, requires focus, strength, balance, and a willingness to complete the pose. If your mind wanders, you may wobble off-balance, and fall. Plain and simple. The slow breathing, brings in more oxygen which then clears out your organs, such as the liver, which contains negative emotion, such as grief, and anger. The breathing and the poses, are specifically done which clears the stomach of gases, and stimulates blood flow. The inverted poses, bring a blood flow to your brain, which stimulates, and revitalizes your brain, your skin, your lungs, and assists in altering your mood. The poses; open your torso and hips, which cause your heart to be open. When you change your physiology, from your fallback position, of closed, tight, and a seemingly guarded position, to a more open position, your body starts to trick your mind. Oh if I’m standing like this, I must not be depressed. If my chest is up, and my arms are out, maybe I’m happy, at least not sad.

In the present moment, if you really stay there, during the yoga pose, you realize that there is nothing from your life, which is happening right now. You are perfectly fine. If you snap your fingers; that snap is how quick, a present moment, zooms by. There is nothing worrisome, or that needs your immediate attention, no distracting voices, in your head, that tell you are worthless. It’s just you being mindful and doing a moderate, focused, yoga pose.

Another element in a modified yoga class, that helps give relief for depression, is meditation. In almost every one of my yoga classes I put in meditation. Meditation, if practiced, helps clients stay in the present moment, and also allows them to sense, that they are loved, cared for, and there is a safe place within. There are many different types of meditation including color meditation, question and answer meditation, open-eyed meditation etc.

At first, yoga takes a lot of focus and discipline. Modified yoga is a discipline but it’s easier than a regular strenuous mat class. You practice the poses, and the breathing, and you practice NOT beating yourself up, and allowing yourself to accept, that you are not perfect. When you develop in yoga, your confidence also develops. Sometime down the road, you realize, it was not too long ago, that you could not do, some of the strength and conditioning, poses of yoga, and now you can. Earlier, you may not have had much luck, with balance, and now, you stand on one foot for 1 minute or more.

The really important thing about a modified yoga class, since it’s not as difficult as power yoga, is that everybody, or almost everybody can do some form of modified yoga. I have modified mat and modified chair. You experience acceptance, and not rejection which makes you feel better about yourself. Self-acceptance is a very important element to clearing depression and anxiety.

Self-acceptance allows you to acknowledge that you are not perfect, and therefore, you don’t have to DO everything perfect. You don’t have to claim responsibility for others happiness, or their choices, that lead them to the unsatisfied place, of their lives. So, if right now, you are struggling, with depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts, get help. Some counseling can really help, and go to a restorative or modified yoga class. Not a yoga class, where everyone is super competitive, or the teacher pushes you, beyond your limit. You have to go to a class, that you feel acceptance, honor and respect, and that you are truly encouraged, to do, only what you can do, and whatever ability, or flexibility you come with, you are encouraged. That class will be a transformational class for you! If you give it a chance, a modified yoga class along with, that positive yoga teacher, will be able to assist you, in clearing depression and anxiety.

Stages of Colon Cancer

Colon cancer is among the most common and serious forms of cancer in the world. Its high rate of incidence and the fact that people remain unaware of the precautionary measures needed makes it a very dangerous ailment. Its rate of incidence starts by the age of 40 and increases multifold after 65. Although predominantly associated with men, Colon cancer affects both men and women. Colon Cancer has 4 distinct stages with a fifth stage referred to as the “recurring stage”. Treatment for each of these is specific to the degree of ailment with a five-year rate of survival.

  • Stage 1: In stage 1, the Colon cancer has made the polyp, or the outgrowth, develop into a tumor and grow into the wall of the Colon or rectum. Treatment requires the removal of the tumor and thus the most common form is surgery, called a resection, in which the tumor and a section of the colon is removed. The five-year survival rate in this stage is 95 %.
  • Stage 2: In Stage 2 of Colon Cancer, the disease has spread from the Colon to tissue surrounding the Colon. This spreading is referred to as ‘Metastasis’ and can be treated by surgery. However, the survival rate drops significantly to 60 %.
  • Stage 3: When Colon cancer enters stage 3, it spreads from the surrounding tissues of the Colon to the Lymph nodes. Treatment includes surgical resection, Chemotherapy and other medical therapies. The survival rate in this stage drops to 35-60 %.
  • Stage 4: Colon Cancer in stage 4 enters other organs of the body such as the lungs and the liver. The treatment in this stage includes a number of forms, surgical resection, chemotherapy and radiation treatment. It might also become necessary to remover other parts of the body. In this stage, there is only a 3 % chance of survival.
  • Recurrent stage: In the recurrent stage, Colon cancer returns after being treated successfully. It may not be necessary that it returns to the Colon however, it could occur in any other part of the body as well. It is therefore advised to maintain regular checkups even after treatment.

Stages of Colon Cancer If found early, Colon Cancer is readily curable and patients do not necessarily, have to go through risky medical procedures. However, in later stages, Colon Cancer is the second most lethal form of Cancer after lung Cancer.

Help Me Sleep

How do you know you have insomnia? If you ever wished before going to bed, "Help me Sleep," you have insomnia. When you are overjoyed to have nightmares because at least you know you got some sleep, you have insomnia! Before going to bed, I would begin to worry about having another sleepless night and after one year of going through life drained, I knew I needed something to help me sleep. After trying sleeping pills, exercising until I was exhausted, reading boring books, and listening to relaxing music, I still had insomnia. Sure the sleeping pills would put me to sleep, but I would wake up groggy, exhausted and had to contend with two side-affects from the medication – headaches and forgetfulness. Sometimes the pill's effect was worn off – the sleeping pill would put me to sleep, but I would wake up in the middle of the night after just 4 hours of sleep pleading, "please help me sleep!" After some research, I learned there are two basic categories of insomnia: primary and secondary, and acute and chronic. Insomnia is characterized by:

  • Difficulty falling asleep;
  • Waking through the night and being unable to get back to sleep;
  • Waking up too early in the morning; And
  • Fat after after waking.

Primary insomnia symptoms are not directly connected with health conditions or problems. Secondary insomnia defines a sufferer experiencing problems due to other health issues like depression, stress, asthma, cancer; Heartburn; Pain; Substances like alcohol; And medication.
Acute insomnia is short term, lasting up to a few weeks. Chronic is long term, meaning the sufferer has bouts multiple nights a week for at least a month or longer. Either of these can come and go. There can be breaks where a person experiences no sleep problems.

  • Stress (loss of job; change of job; concern about work, etc.)
  • Physical and emotional discomfort
  • Interference with sleep cycle (light, noise, extreme temperatures, etc.)
  • Medications

The sleep schedule can be disrupted by things like travel. Time changes and jet lag can put undue stress on the brain and body and affect the sleep cycle. However, that was not the case with me. I could not understand what was causing the insomnia and told that to my doctor. She asked if I was under stress and despite I was going through a divorce, going to school and raising a child on my own, I did not think that stress was the culprit of my sleepless nights. Why? I thought that if I was under stress, I would not be able to shut my mind off my problems at night. But when night came I did not think about my problems, so I could not understand why I was still not sleeping. Stress can be internalized and affects people in different ways. After finding the answer to getting a good nights sleep, I did notice that before I found the answer to sleeping, my stomach was tense, my neck was tight and my back was sore. These are all symptoms that manifest from stress and insomnia was the result. Because insomnia disruptions a sufferer's normal lifestyle, you can experience fatigue, general weariness and irritability through the day. There can also be severe problems with memory and concentration.

It's always a good idea to have a doctor investigate the problem by performing a physical exam, looking at your medical history and studying sleep history just to rule out any serious medical conditions. The doctor may request you track sleep patterns for a week and monitor how you feel the next day. The doctor may want to query your partner about your sleep patterns. In several cases, the doctor may suggest a sleep center.

Once diagnosed, treatment will be administrated. The doctor will find a proactive and healthy solution. It could include medication, diet, relaxation exercises and therapy. They will suggest you avoid overuse of sleeping pills as they can become addictive and have side effects.

Since many of my patients undergoing physical and occupational therapy were under stressful situations, I designed these specific sets of exercises to decrease their stress. Soon they were reporting that the active relaxation exercises and meditation were not only helping manage stress, but helping them sleep. After doing daily vital checks, I discovered their blood pressure was decreasing and their heart health was improving. When I heard one of them say, "I finally slept through the night for the first time in twelve years," I knew I had to try it myself. It worked and finally I had a reason to celebrate; For it mean no more sleeping pills, no waking up to a pounding headache, no fatigue, no forgetting and going through the day in a brain fog needing 5 cups of coffee. That was my 'aha' moment. I was under stress and the only way to overcome it was to accept what stress was doing to my mind and body.

Once accepted, you can learn how to manage stress, instead of stress managing you. If you are in a stressful situation, you may not even realize that insomnia may be a direct result of stress. Accepting that stress could be the culprit is the first step of having no more nights staring at your alarm clock.

Pediatric Bronchitis – Parents’ Guide To Dealing With It

athing problems. If the parents or grandparents can stop smoking, this would be beneficial for the children too.

Both types of infections have similar symptoms:
* Tires easily
* Wheezing
* Difficulty breathing worsened by physical exertion
* Mucus filled cough (if there is any blood in the mucus, then consult in the child’s physician.
* Rales (these are abnormal sounds that are found in the lungs by the doctor.)

There are several tests that can be used to diagnose children’s respiratory problems. They include: x-rays, pulse oxymetry, pulmonary lung functions, arterial blood gas and sputum.

If it’s left untreated, the infection can develop into more serious respiratory infections that include pneumonia, pulmonary hypertension, heart failure on the right side as well as emphysema.

When it seems there is no infections, doctors will treat the child for a common cold. This means staying in bed, drink lots of fluid. Using a humidifier can help the child get over the cold much quicker. If the child experiences dry cough, it would be necessary to use a cough suppressant for their own comfort. Aspirin is a no-no for children because of the danger of Reye’s syndrome. Tylenol or Motrin should be the only two medicines parents should use.

Sometimes to get the mucus moving, doctors may suggest using expectorants. These types of medicine will thin the mucus out, which makes it easier to get rid of quicker. Before doing this, consult the pedetrician.

Antibiotics will only be prescribed for bacteria related bronchitis. Like adults, children need to take the medicine as directed to avoid reoccurrences. Children under age 8 will be given Amoxicillin instead of other types of medicines.

As for chronic problems, treatment depends on how far into the disease you are. Children need a healthy environment and supervised exercise. Some medications can be used to relieve the stress on the bronchial tubes thus allowing air to flow through.

Preventive measures are always better than a cure. Parents who smoke need to remember that when they smoke so do their children who in turn also face health problems.

Aspergillus Black Mold on Onions – What Should Be Done With Them?

This black mold belongs to the genus Aspergillus of fungi and is known as the Aspergillus black mold. If your fingers come in contact with it, a good washing with soap and water will do the trick. However, onions carrying this mold are often bruised or damaged even up to their very core, so to be safe, you should simply throw away those that are contaminated.

Aspergillus black mold in onions grows in warm climates such as the farms in the southern states. Farmers and quality inspectors rarely know about this type of mold growth as it is hidden between the onion’s skins, and sometimes there are no visible signs of damage from the outside. Although mold is known to proliferate in humid conditions, Aspergillus in onions have also been common in extremely hot desert-like places where onions are cultivated.

A. niger is less likely to cause human illnesses than other Aspergillus species, but it has been found to produce an illness known as aspergillosis when large amounts of its spores are inhaled. Some symptoms of aspergillosis are: cough, chest pains, fever, and difficulty in breathing.

Severe cases may involve shock, chills, delirium, coughing up of blood, and blood clots. It’s also possible that the mold finds its way into your other organs and destroy healthy cells there, causing breathing difficulties, liver failure, or kidney failure.

Where Aspergillus black mold originates

The mold can start its attack even as the bulbs are still in the fields. They can also multiply during storage and can start from a simple bruising of the bulb. This is why it is important to handle the bulbs carefully during harvesting and processing – to keep damage to a minimum.

Some people simply wash away the offensive Aspergillus Black Mold until the onion is seemingly clean when inspected. However, tiny spores left behind are too microscopic to be seen. If you know the health problems associated with the ingestion of black mold, you’ll never think twice about throwing contaminated onions away.

If you are cultivating your own onions, always store them in a warm and dry place for curing, such as on wire baskets on your kitchen counter or hanging from your durty kitchen ceiling, and in a cool but dry place when storing.

As a rule of thumb, the temperature where you would be storing your onions should be in the range of 32 up to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Any warmer would cause spoilage, and any increase in humidity would just encourage the growth of Aspergillus black mold.

Farmers have tried several fungicides to control the growth of this mold on onions, but no particular fungicide has been found to be effective. And as there’s no surefire way to tell whether your onions are contaminated, you’ll just have to be risking this possibility for now.

Acute Bronchitis

Acute bronchitis is very common among people with respiratory conditions. This type of bronchitis can occur in anyone, at any age. Acute bronchitis usually accompanies flu or cold and in most cases it doesn’t need medical treatment. When acute bronchitis is caused by viruses, the illness can clear on itself within a few days. However, more serious forms of acute bronchitis may require specific medical treatment.

Acute bronchitis refers to inflammation of the bronchial mucosal membranes, triggered by various external irritant or infectious agents. Due to prolonged exposure to irritants, pollutants or due to infection with viruses or bacteria, the bronchial region becomes inflamed, resulting in overproduction and expectoration of mucus.

Most symptoms of acute bronchitis are outwardly visible. The disease generates symptoms such as mucus-producing cough, chest pain and discomfort (intensifying with deep breaths), wheezing, difficult, shallow and accelerated breathing. Sometimes, these manifestations of acute bronchitis can be accompanied by mild or moderate fever.

Most acute bronchitis is usually caused by a viral infection and can be spread through person-to-person contact either directly or indirectly. This means that if you are a caregiver of someone who has bronchitis, you are at risk of contracting the illness yourself.

When you catch a cold or the flu and your respiratory system becomes ill, this is the starting point for acute bronchitis. The infection then travels into your airways, through your throat. A good thing is that acute bronchitis does not last as long as pneumonia does. Another thing for you to know is that acute bronchitis is usually caused by some viruses, but you can get this disease because of a bacteria as well.

Antibiotics can also be prescribed to you by your doctor, but only if the case of acute bronchitis that you have is caused by a bacteria. If you are given such a treatment involving antibiotics, make sure that you take them exactly as the doctor prescribed them, if you want to kill the bacteria.

If your bronchial tubes thicken, you are now blessed with acute bronchitis. Smokers often get this disease. I am sure you have heard a smoker constantly clearing their throats or hacking away for no apparent reason. It is a good possibility that they have acute bronchitis.

Gingseng ‘s effectiveness in improving parameters of erectile function such as duration and rigidity of erection have been demonstrated in many clinical studies. Well documented adverse effects of ginseng include dermatitis and gastrointestinal disturbances. Gingseng products are therefore contraindicated in patients with acute bronchitis and inflammatory disease.

Viral and bacterial infections normally cause acute bronchitis which is normally a relatively mild inflammation. Sometimes irritation from environmental fumes such as tobacco smoke, acid and solvent fumes can also cause acute bronchitis. Symptoms normally happen in the winter months and follow on from a cold.

While acute bronchitis usually clears on itself within a few days, chronic bronchitis can last for months. Chronic bronchitis is an infectious disease and needs ongoing medical treatment with antibiotics. If the medical treatment is prematurely interrupted, the illness reoccurs and can lead to complications.

In some viral forms of acute bronchitis, medical treatment isn’t required at all, as the illness clears on itself in a few weeks. Even if the illness is caused by bacteria, bronchitis treatments with antibiotics can cause a lot of harm to the organism if they are administered continuously.

Chronic Bronchitis – Simple Tips To Avoid It

When a physician uses the term “chronic”, he often means persistent suffering on a long-term basis from a certain disease. One of these can be chronic bronchitis.

Chronic bronchitis is the swelling of the airways. These bronchial tubes allow air to pass through.

When irritation occurs, a formation of thick mucus will begin. These tubes will then be blocked by the mucus, being it harder to breathe.

Another known problem that comes with chronic bronchitis is asthma. This is actually the chronic inflammation of those tubes. It is recognized by the person’s inability to breathe or take deep breaths.

Although chronic bronchitis is often times associated with asthma, the truth actually is the infection consists of many factors that can possibly trigger it.

Both disorders are recognized by their chest constriction, coughing, difficulty in breathing and wheezing.

However, the environment does have several threatening factors that can irritate and set off the symptoms.

What are the environmental factors?

The most common factor and most common irritant in the environment is dust. This substance is everywhere thus making it hard for those irritated by it to stay well near it. This is the worst culprit of all. Asthmatics should avoid dusty places because of the breathing problems associated with it.

It’s important to limit the exposure to it but it is important to remember that preventions should be taken into accordance with the person’s sensitivity.

It is wise, for those who have, a major allergy to dust to install a specialized cleaning unit. Those who sensitivities are not that bad… a regular cleaning schedule should be kept.

There are free online tips on how to avoid and rid the problematic irritants that can trigger these episodes inside the home.

Another factor that hurts those who suffer from this disease are the chemical odors and fumes that one breaths in. The likely culprit of this factor is tobacco smoke. The smoke is a danger not only to the smoker but to those around him or her as well. When a person inhales secondhand smoke, it dampens their ability to fight off infections.

This will typically lead to chronic coughing experienced by asthmatics and bronchitis sufferers.

Another trigger, though not well know, is stomach acid. A backflow into the esophagus can cause chronic bronchitis. This disease is known as acid reflux.

For sufferers of this type of problem, it would be wise to seek medical attention from specialized doctors.

We also need to understand the everyday life of the constant sufferer to avoid several lifestyle factors that could be in and around the home.

Do not forget there is asthma which is called Bronchial asthma. This is simply the constriction of the tubes for a very short while.

And there does seem to be some confusion about bronchial asthma. Many regard it as the coming together of asthma and bronchitis.

Bronchitis in Greek means “bronchos” meaning windpipe or throat. It’s also a suffix noun that relates to the word diseases.

Asthma is also a Greek word which means “azein” which stands for “breathe hard”.

In medical terms, “bronchial asthma” is what is known as asthma.

The swelling in the tubes can be acute or short-lived or it can last for a long time which is named chronic. This is the case because viruses and irritants including pollution and smoke harm the breathing tract.

However, the bronchial asthma is caused by the gastrointestinal tract and can still be triggered by some forms of substances including dust.

Knee Replacement Surgery: an Overview

Knee injury is a common problem amongst all age groups. A severe damage to it due to an injury or disorders like arthritis can take a heavy toll on a person daily life. Bones need good blood flow to be healthy. Any limit to the normal blood flow leads to stiffness, pain and swelling in the knee joints. In the due course if this is not treated, the pain increases which leads to movement problems. At an advanced stage such excruciating pain can render a person unable to do everyday activities like walking, sitting and standing.

A knee replacement surgery/ knee arthroplasty is often the best solution to relieve the pain thereby increasing ease of activity. In most cases this is recommended to the patients who do not respond that well to oral medications and other treatments.

This surgery is a major one and requires certain pre-operative tests to be conducted. At the start of the surgery the patient is given anesthesia to temporarily suppress the pain caused during the operation. The procedure involves replacement of the damaged joint with metal/plastic prosthesis.

The success of the surgery relies heavily on what the patient does after being discharged from the medical center. Heavy weights and high intensity movements are an absolute no-no. The doctor prescribes some exercises that need to be done for faster recovery. Daily activities like walking should be done with the help of crutches or walkers. If needed the furniture and other essentials should be rearranged to be accessible by the patient without much moving around.

More than 90% people have successful recovery while some have problems like blood clots, infections around the wound, dislocation of the prosthesis. However, these complications can be treated with proper drugs. The wound should be taken proper care by keeping it clean and dry. Any redness or drain in the wound should be notified to the doctor immediately.

Post knee replacement surgery, a patient needs few weeks time to get back to the daily activities like walking, standing and sitting. However, high intensity activities that put more stress to the knees should always be avoided.

Pancreatitis Abdominal Pain After Gallbladder Operation

10-15 percent of individuals experience upper abdominal pain after gallbladder removal. This pain can happen either in two weeks or appear a few decades after gallbladder removal surgery. This stomach pain can irradiate to left ribs cage, back, and be accompanied with gas, bloating, nausea, fullness, little appetite, heartburn, diarrhea, etc.

LUQ pain can vary in intensity or duration, but usually it arises after improper food combining or alcohol consumption. Stress and depression typically aggravate abdominal pain and, vice versa, abdominal pain can make a person be depressed.

There could be three situations in which the pain may appear:

The first one is the beginning when all of the tests look normal. Patient gets OTC painkillers, schedules an appointment to a pain management clinic, or has a referral to a psychiatrist for possible stress, depression, and anxiety. Usual advice "Do not eat fat and do not drink alcohol!"

The second situation is when the tests reveal an increase of the pancreatic or liver enzymes. That is followed by many visits to the doctors, gastroenterologists, hospitals' ER, and taking all sorts of tests and a variety of medications. Visual images of the stomach, pancreas, and bile ducts may show dilatation of the common bile duct, pancreatitis, scarring, gastritis, hepatitis, duodenum's deformation, etc.

And last but not least is the third reason, many tests have exposed severe structural changes in the bile duct, pancreas, liver, and sphincter of Oddi. This leads to numerous doctors 'visits, medications, ER admissions, professors' consultation in specialized laparoscopic centers, and endoscopic surgeries. All this leads to a long-suffering, mental and physical exhaustion, and personal and financial problems.

All these situations are not separate disorders. These are the three stages of chronic biliary pancreatitis.
1. Functional stage
2. Structural stage
3. Advanced stage

Biliary is the medical term meaning relation to bile, gallbladder, and bile ducts. It is known; The health of the bile, gallbladder, and bile ducts is indistinguishable bound to the health of the pancreas.

In the beginning, let us focus on the first, widespread, functional stage of the chronic biliary pancreatitis after gallbladder surgery, when there are no abnormalities in the regular tests. This is a critical time for the natural, life-changed, non-drug, non-surgical approaches of the alternative, holistic medicine. It may be particularly beneficial to avoid potential, structural problems that are difficult to treat. Even in the structural or advanced stages, these methods are valuable to improve the quality of life and life span of the patients.

Probably, your gallbladder is gone because you had a typical gallbladder attack with RUQ pain, gas, nausea, vomiting, jaundice, fever, which was usually related to gallbladder stones and inflammation. You believed that the pain after gallbladder surgery would be gone.

Unfortunately, your upper abdominal pain, started to spread out to the left and to the back. This pain after gallbladder removal often goes along with gas, bloating, nausea or vomiting, burning sensation, etc. It happens on a regular basis after unhealthy food combining sugar, protein, fat, and starch or drinking of alcohol.

The functional stage of the biliary pancreatitis is very similar to type III of the sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. If you are here and you are reading this article, you probably know that sphincter of Oddi is a muscle valve strategically located between bile and pancreatic ducts and duodenum-the beginning of the small intestine. The sphincter of Oddi controls the flow of the blend of pancreatic juice and bile into the duodenum.

Without food in the duodenum, the sphincter of Oddi closes. At that time, liver bile is redirected into gallbladder. Gallbladder extends like a balloon to accumulate and concentrate bile for future digestion. If food approaches from the stomach to the duodenum, gallbladder contracts, throws bile through the open sphincter of Oddi into the duodenum for digestion of fats and fat-soluble substances'.

The pendulum effect linking gallbladder and sphincter of Oddi is necessary for healthy digestion. It also prevails the rising of pressure in the bile and pancreatic ducts and promotes the proper flow of the bile and pancreatic juice.

The Sphinster of Oddi dysfunction can be biliary, when pain locations in the right side, or pancreatic type when pain is mainly occurring in the LUQ with irradiation in the left rib cage and back. History of previous hospital admission with strong LUQ pain, gas, nausea, and increasing the blood pancreatic enzymes makes clear the pancreatic injury and development of a chronic pancreatitis.

I worked for decades with patients, who suffered from acute pancreatitis in ICU and the individuals with chronic toxic, alcoholic, or biliary pancreatitis in outpatient setting. This practice convinced me that even one attack of the pancreatic pain is a symptom of the pancreatic injury. Here, health, life, and future of an individual depend upon recognizing the situation and persistent and insistent battle to prevent deteriorations'. Never say, "Never"; Nor say "It is too late to do something!"

Yet we need to focus on what leads to complications and progress of chronic pancreatitis.

First and foremost, it is the acidity of the liver bile and pancreatic juice. Naturally, they are alkaline solutions. I will let you in on a top secret; Normal alkalinity of the pancreatic juice and bile is a core of the correct digestion.

Why these liquids are becoming acidic and what is wrong with it? I medically make things clear in my EBook and articles. If the bile becomes acidic, quantity of aggressive, precipitated, corroded bile acids in it is increased. Bile acids start irritating bile ducts, sphincter of Oddi, duodenum and stomach, esophagus and even colon. Irritated, corroded bile acids are the culprit of the stubborn heartburn, gas, bloating, stomach infection, bile acids diarrhea, and, definitely, biliary pancreatitis.

Supposedly, your gallbladder was gone because the concentrated, aggressive, acidic bile corroded and irritated, as an active detergent, your gallbladder, which led to its inflammation. Acidity is a major causative factor for precipitation of the bile acids, cholesterol, calcium salts, and bile pigments. As a result, it forms bile sludge and gallbladder stones. Here; Collected in gallbladder acidic, aggressive bile leads to damage of its walls and makes gallbladder the first target for surgical knife.

Moreover, acidic changes in the pancreatic juice cause premature activation of the pancreatic digestive enzymes. Activated within the pancreas, enzymes digest their own pancreas causing pancreatitis. It is known, pancreatic digestive enzymes require alkaline milieu to digest the foods actively. On the contrary, in an acidic situation, they are absolutely stop working. Not completely digested foods are fermented by bacteria and yeast with creation of toxins and gases, which then cause cramps, pains, bloating, heartburn, burning, itching sensation and internal toxicity.

When gallbladder is gone, aggressive, acidic liver bile begins irritating bile ducts and sphincter of Oddi-the muscle valve in the wall of the duodenum. Spasm of the sphincter of Oddi increases pressure within the bile duct causes its dilatation and pain.
In the worst case scenario, this gives the possibility to throw out the bile into the pancreatic duct. Scientists validated that even the small amount of bile acids occurring inside the pancreatic duct could activate pancreatic digestive enzymes; As a result creating damage and inflammation of the pancreas that is called as biliary pancreatitis.

What has to be done here?

Restoring the normal alkalinity of the liver bile and pancreatic juice is fundamental. How do we naturally do that? Eating of the alkaline-formed foods, using cellular magnesium-potassium and drinking healing mineral water can physically restore correct acid-base balance; Hence, alkalinity of the liver bile and pancreatic juice. Healing mineral water sounds weird for the majority of Americans, but numerous Europeans spend healthy vacations in the health mineral spa. European medical doctors have recommended drinking Karlovy Vary healing mineral water to their patients with digestive and pancreatic disorders ever since XV century.

After the first cholecystectomy; Gallbladder surgery that was done in Berlin in 1882, this operation became extremely common in Europe. Afterward, European doctors encountered complications after gallbladder removal surgery as well as pancreatic disorders. For many years, European doctors recommended to their patients with the liver, pancreas, and digestive problems after gallbladder removal surgery to drink Karlovy Vary mineral water. Water may be used either from the thermal springs in the Karlovy Vary or by drinking healing mineral water that is prepared from the genuine Karlovy Vary thermal spring salt at home. European doctors demonstrated favorable action of this healing mineral water in the postcholecystectomy syndrome.

For a person without gallbladder to drink Karlovy Vary healing mineral water that can make pancreatic juice and also liver bile liquid and alkaline, it is a perfect solution. In my personal experience of care for patients with postcholecystectomy syndrome or the chronic biliary pancreatitis, this action is the basis of the healing success. By medical study of the European doctors, drinking Karlovy Vary healing mineral water lessens pain, cramps, gas, bloating, diminishes heartburn, and improves the lab tests in persons with postcholecystectomy syndrome and biliary chronic pancreatitis.

What else can be useful in the sphincter of Oddi dysfunction type III after gallbladder removal?

Customized healing diet, acupuncture, herbal medicine, and nutrition supplementation can make bile liquid and alkaline; Reduction spasm of the sphincter of Oddi, trim down pain, inflammation, and indigestion. European whole body cleansing, abdominal massage, colon hydrotherapy, restoration of friendly intestinal flora, may reduce numerous unpleasant symptoms of biliary pancreatitis.

Many individuals without gallbladder have a history of using the broad-spectrum antibiotic, drinking alcohol, craving sugars. This, consecutively, diminishes an amount of the friendly (beneficial) intestinal bacteria, which is responsible for the proper digestion, metabolism, immunity, and suppressing the overgrowth of the unfriendly, opportunistic infection such as Candida-yeast, harmful bacteria, parasites. Regardless of the common belief, drinking "yogurt" and taking probiotics can not restore beneficial intestinal flora, particularly in person with acidic bile and pancreatic juice.

Without proper quality of bile and pancreatic juice, together with the unhealthy balance of the beneficial bacteria in the intestines, individuals suffering from numerous nutritional deficiencies. These symptoms are very far from the abdominal area. It can be depression, stress, anxiety, insomnia, allergy, low immunity, skin rashes, muscle pains, neuropathy, etc. Habitual taking painkillers, fast or insensitive "liver cleansing", may bring additional severe problems to pancreas.

Everything that I've mentioned above also makes sense in the structural and advanced stages of the biliary pancreatitis. Alternative medicine, holistic, natural non-drug methods can be well combined with conventional medical treatment. The purpose is to find a knowledgeable, licensed practitioner who will involve you in the intensive healing process.
