I Found the Link Between Contact Dermatitis and Eczema! You Can Prevent Your Symptoms

Are you sick of itching, scratching red, irritated patches of skin? Or are you heartbroken watching your child suffer the same discomfort? If you are tired of worrying, and feel that there is nothing you can do to prevent these symptoms – you are not alone.

I felt extremely frustrated when my 10 year old son developed a rash that was later diagnosed as eczema, or more specifically a type of contact dermatitis. But I was lucky enough to find a solution – one that not many people have been told about. A solution that works!

At first his problem started as a small red mark on his lower back, a flaky area that was about the size of a 10 cent coin. Over time it became so big it stretched along the whole of his lower back where the elastic waistband of his school shorts made contact. Sometimes it was so bad the dry flakes of skin ended up all over his clothing and the patches of skin became thickened and raised.

All he kept asking me was “Why does it happen to me?” and “Please take me to the Doctor to stop it.” So that’s exactly what we did – off we went to get advice with renewed hope that his rash would soon disappear. The steroid creams the Doctor prescribed did the trick, and after a couple of weeks we celebrated, thinking that the problem was fixed.

Alas to our disappointment we discovered that the patches returned after only a week or two, and what was worse we had no idea why. We had no choice but to reapply the steroid creams all over again and continue every day until the outbreak resolved. This was the beginning of an endless cycle of redness, flaky itchy skin and chemical creams which made him cry when I applied them because they stung his tender skin so badly. This treatment continued on and off for several months at a time.

Eventually I became really worried, I was very concerned about the drugs that were in the creams that I was applying to my son’s skin. These chemicals could not be good for his young skin in the long run? Surely there had to be a better way? There had to be more to it than just treating the symptoms, over, and over again? So I set about researching more about the causes of these common skin conditions.

Unfortunately I learnt that inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, contact dermatitis and atopic dermatitis are all similar in the fact that it is very hard to isolate the possible cause. When I Googled causes, I was given a list so long I didn’t know where to start! The one thing that was consistent across every site was the connection between skin irritations and the multitude of ingredients we unknowingly put on our skin. These triggers are otherwise known as environmental allergens.

Whatever the cause of my son’s skin problems, I was determined to find out how to stop the irritation in the first place. Treating the symptoms alone was just a waste of time and money. So I took it upon myself and began scrutinising carefully what had changed in our lives since the rash first erupted and more importantly, what was coming in contact with his skin.

Research told me that soaps and body washes could be the culprits – but these hadn’t changed as I had been buying safe products for years since my children were babies. The same with shampoos and conditioners – I was buying these from the same trusted website that guaranteed removal of over 3000 possible known or suspected irritants, so I felt confident it wasn’t them.

Finally after going over every possible personal care product in our house it clicked, and I found the one thing that could be linked! In our laundry cupboard was a box of supermarket washing powder – purchased by my husband without my knowledge because it was ‘on special and a good buy’. Recently I had gone back to work, and the laundry was his domain, so for 3 months he had been using this instead of the toxin free, safe powder I had been using for the past 4 years!!!

I was horrified as I realised that all of a sudden my son’s relatively untouched skin had been exposed to a cocktail of irritating chemicals including sodium lauryl sulfate and propylene glycol to name a couple. Instantly his skin had flared up and with repetitive use week after week it had become worse and worse.

I immediately stopped any clothes being washed in the off the shelf washing powder and re-ordered my usual powder. Incredibly it took two weeks for the rash to settle and 4 weeks for it to disappear. And it has not come back since! Something so simple, so easy to miss and yet so easy to change. All of a sudden I was so grateful to have access to the safe and trusted products that have provided a healthy sanctum for my children and my whole family for all these years.

Ways to Handle Different types of scoliosis

Scoliosis has been identified as a medical condition in which the spine gets deformed into shape of “S” or “C” rather than in a straight line as it normally should be. One of the many symptoms of this problem is scoliosis pain. This health condition could be classified as:

  • Congenital Scoliosis (due to vertebral anomalies at the time of birth)
  • Idiopathic Scoliosis (no known cause of occurrence)
  • Neuromuscular Scoliosis (consequence of some primary disease like cerebral palsy, physical trauma, spina bifida, etc)
  • Chiari Malformation( a brain malformation)

The most common of the all the above is idiopathic scoliosis. It sub-categories are referred to as Infantile Scoliosis (between age birth-3 years), Juvenile Scoliosis (between age 4-9 years), Adolescent Scoliosis (between age 10-18 years), or Adult Scoliosis (above 18 years of age), depending upon the point of life it shows an occurrence.

Babies with problems of absence of vertebrae, vertebrae not forming the way it should and the absence of a normal space between the vertebrae are known to be sufferer of Congenital Scoliosis. This form of scoliosis takes place in the uterus of expecting mother.

Neuromuscular Scoliosis with subtypes, namely, myopathic and neuropathic Scoliosis occurs as a result of some primary disease of brain that requires neurological tests to be sure.

For Scoliosis treatment, people are looking at physiotherapy in order to avoid scoliosis surgery. The most popular method in treatment style for Scoliosis is Schroth Method that documents varying level of success in relieving the symptoms that are associated with the disease including severe scoliosis pain.

What one could do best to deal with the situation is getting acquainted to it with the assistance of scoliosis specialist and rest of the things follow that first step. There are many ways and methods adapted by patients as suggested by the therapist in order to live life as normally as possible. They are part of Scoliosis treatment advised according to the severity of the condition. People can start from Physical Therapy and might left with no other option than scoliosis surgery but surely enough this is the last resort for this problem. If diagnosed earlier, it might not present itself as a difficult problem to overcome.

The options that are available to take this medical condition on recovery path include Physical therapy, occupational therapy, chiropractic therapy, casting, bracing and if nothing goes well, then, surgery. Idiopathic Scoliosis often sees to Spinecor braces to correct the bend of the spine without ant side-effect of wearing it.

Diagnosis of Scoliosis may include Adams Forward Bent Test, Scoliometer, X-rays (front-back and side view), serial radio graphs and MRI scans are performed to understand the level of the severity depending upon age as well.

Trying to ignore Scoliosis may severe the condition and make life more painful as it progresses. So the best is to be aware of this problem and be guided of ways and methods to alleviate it.

Regular Gutter VS Seamless Gutters

Gutters are somehow helping the house to extend the durability of the walls, windows, ceilings, doors, etc… they are used to re-route the water to the specified path and let the whole sum of water collected to a certain location, either for storage or in to the lawn. Gutters are available in many types and shapes. The choice of selection of apt gutter depends on the architecture of the house and the climatic condition rather than the preference factor of the folks. Gutters serve many purposes other than water redirection, like prevents the house from mold and formation of fungus, which is very predominant in the region with the highest rainfall.

Folks sometimes feel that gutters spoil the look of the house, as they protrude out of the house, whereas some feel this as unique look and make the architecture accordingly. The gutters are divided into two based on the vicinity, they are regular or traditional gutter and seamless gutters. Some of the major differences and the pros and cons of both the types are explained below.

Regular gutters:

These have been used for many years and available in all the colors and in all type of materials like vinyl, metal, stainless steel and even in the wood which used in rare cases. The regular gutter installation is the easy process. The materials used here are available in regular size and the size can be altered based on the roof design and the pathway of water redirection. The seam should be used to seal the gutters which should be done with complete perfection in order to avoid leakage and breakthrough of water.

Improper installation in single spot will spoil the entire work of gutter installation. This gutter has paved way for testing the process simultaneously while installing by allowing the flow of waters to pass through. The regular gutters should be given priority for the maintenance as the leaves and debris get clogged when kept unnoticed for long duration. The gutter maintenance can be done periodically with ease even by the non-professionals. Alternatively there is another form of gutter which is introduced with seam called the leaf guard gutter which diverts the leaf and shed outside the gutter.

Pros:

· Less expensive than seamless gutter

· Maintenance should be done by the professionals.

· Defect portion can be easily replaced without disturbing the rest.

· Can be altered easily according to the structure of the house without the special ailment.

· The blockage can be easily detected and cleaned easily.

Cons:

· Frequent exposure to rust and leak

· Despite the installation of leaf guard gutter, the problem always occurs with debris.

· Replacement of single gutter will change the look of the house, so the gutter must be painted to match the house.

· Expansion and contraction of materials happens for the seasonal change which damages gutter.

Seamless gutters:

Seamless gutters are the trendy design structure for the house which is available in all the materials and they can be installed in the house during the construction process. The seamless gutters are mostly preferred in the area where the rainfall reason is more. The seamless gutters are not restricted to the particular architecture. They can be installed in multi-storey buildings which have number of bends and turns. The seamless gutters are not available in standard size.

The installation should be done by the skilled professionals, after measuring the length and shape of the gutter installment place. The required equipment is brought to the place of installation and the further proceedings are done. Gutter maintenance is not required as they do not pave way for the maintenance because of the closed architecture.

Pros:

· They give a trendy look to the house

· Available for complex architecture and no need of special joints for fitting purpose

· Leakage and rust are not occurring often, as seams are present in some portion throughout the length.

· The durability is more compared to standard gutter, as they do not have impact over the freezing, expansion and contraction.

· They stay strong over a long duration and don’t provide a way for the debris and leaves. So maintenance is not required very often.

Cons:

· Installation cost is more

· Cannot be done by the common folks as DIY

· Even the gutter cleaning and replacement should be done by hiring the professionals

Despite all these ups and downs, both the gutter types are still preferred in most of the regions based on the need.

Take Control of Your Home Environment

People with allergies face the possibility of having a reaction almost everywhere they go. Although we can not control the environments of other people's homes, businesses or other public areas, we can make a difference in our own homes. Here are some tips for reducing allergens in your home.

In the Bedroom

It is particularly important to clear the sleeping environment of allergens because symptoms tend to worsen at night and may cause an asthmatic to wake up with an asthma attack.

O Clean the room of any visible mold. Get behind dressers and furniture, in closets and in corners, where mold may lurk.

O Remove anything that may contain material you have not been cleared from by your doctor. Sensitivity testing will reveal which materials you are allergic to. Once you know what to look for find items containing or made up of those materials and remove them from your room (polyester, acrylic, nylon, wool, etc.).

O Keep pets out of the bedroom. You may not be allergic to the pets themselves, but all kinds of allergens get trapped in their fur – from dust to other irritants – which are rubbed off on blankets, clothing, carpet, and so on.

O Do some spring cleaning. Clean out your closets and dressers and 1) Get rid of anything you have not worn in a year; And 2) Wash everything else in an allergen-free detergent – or one that you know does not irritate your skin. This includes sheets and blankets that you know are not made of or contain materials you are allergic to. Clothes should be rinsed twice to thoroughly eliminate any detergent residues.

BioSET practitioners clear doctors for common allergens in the bedroom air. First, the person is asked to leave an open jar of water in their bedroom for 24 hours. Then they are cleared for whatever substances are suspended in the water. This technique clears for various gases that may be given off in the bedroom by furniture, fabrics, carpets, and other items that might be difficult to identify individually. The person is also tested and cleared for sensitivities to materials commonly used in bedding, including wool, acrylic, nylon, polyester, and cotton.

Use the process of elimination to identify irritants in your bedroom. Do you have any plants, potpourri, dried flowers or other accessories that could be causing your allergies? Remove the items from your bedroom one at a time for at least three days. If your symptoms subside while that particular item is out of the room; Keep it out.

One of the most common allergens that trigger asthmatics is dust mites. It is important to get rid of accumulations of dust. These next few tips are specific to the bedroom, but should be applied throughout the house.

O There should be smooth, uncluttered surfaces in the bedroom, with few small objects like books, knick- knacks, CDs, tapes, or stuffed animals that attract dust (and dust mites).

O Bedrooms should not be used as libraries or studies. Dust loves books.

O Bedding should be washed weekly in hot water – 135 degrees Fahrenheit – to kill dust mites. Cool water just gives them a bath.

O Pillows can be encased in non-allergic and non-permeable dust-proof covers, if the person sleeping on them is not sensitive to the material. Otherwise, the cover will do more harm than good.

O Avoid feather comforters and pillows, and remove carpeting if possible.

O Carpeting is a major hiding place for dust mites.

O Avoid wall pennants, macramé hangings, and other dust catchers.

O Stuffed toys should be machine washable.

O Keep all clothing in a closet with the door closed.

O When vacuuming or dusting, be sure to use a dust face mask.

In the Kitchen

O Mold grows in refrigerators, particularly around door gaskets, in water pans below self-defrosting refrigerators, and on spoiled foods.

O Mold can also grow on garbage, so containers should be emptied and cleaned frequently.

In the Bathroom

O Remove excess water from shower doors, tiles, and tubs with a squeegee.

O Shower curtains, bath tile, shower stalls, tubs, and toilet tanks should all be washed with mold-preventive solutions.

O Do not carpet the bathroom.

O Bath sponges and other so-called "spa" items are breeding grounds for mold and bacteria. Use a wash cloth instead and wash it frequently with the laundry.

Chlorine is a common sensitivity for asthmatics, and when present in tap water, the effects are particularly noticeable after a shower. There may be difficulty breathing and a feeling of running out of oxygen. Some asthmatics have found that a chlorine-removing filter on the showerhead helps to prevent this reaction.

Chemicals used in toiletries, from cosmetics to perfume and lotions, are common allergens and irritants for asthma-sufferers. Learning about and using natural soaps and skin care products – as well as natural house-cleaning products – can make a huge and immediate difference in respiratory health and allergy symptoms.

In the Laundry Room and Basement

O In the laundry room, vent the dryer outside and dry clothing immediately after washing.

O In a basement, do not lay carpet and pads on a concrete floor. Use vinyl flooring instead.

O Dirt floors should be covered with a vapor barrier.

O Keep the basement free of dust, and remove stored items that are likely to harbor mold.

O Sensitive individuals should not have their bedroom on a basement level.

These tips may seem extreme, but for those who suffer from allergies and asthma attacks, making their home environment a cleaner place to live is well worth the time.

If you believe you have allergies and are not sure what you are allergic to, or if you believe that your asthma is connected to allergies, see a doctor and be tested for sensitivities. Once you know what causes your allergies, you can take steps to remove those irritants from your home. Until then, you can follow some of these helpful tips.

10 Ways to Monitor Corporate Stress Levels

10 Ways to Monitor Corporate Stress Levels

Good military leaders work hard to balance the

positive and negative stress. Positive stress

encourages high performance. Negative stress

degrades individual and unit capability. The best

leaders know how to use positive stress to get the

most out of their personnel. And they know how to

tone things down to when negative stress threatens

productivity

The Army is fanatic about training officers and

sergeants to take care of the troops. And these

well-trained leaders are fanatic about carrying

out their responsibilities. The soldiers in their

command don’t always realize why these leaders are

so focused on having everything ready —

personnel, equipment, and training 100 percent

ready.

Even the most personable leaders are sometimes

accused of managing “by the book” or of being too

concerned with their own personal recognition and

promotion. But those who make these allegations,

miss the point. Just the opposite is true.

These “fanatic” leaders are primarily interested

in the welfare of their troops. They want to

complete the unit mission with minimum personnel

loss. Strict discipline, intensive and complete

training, and numerous inspections are essential

for combat readiness.

Failing to enforce regulations, conduct detailed

inspections, or practice combat readiness is

tantamount to dereliction of duty. The extra

effort that goes into intensive training programs

creates additional stress in the unit, but less

persistent commanders actually endanger their

troops and their mission when they fail to

schedule training that teaches troops how to deal

with stress.

—Detecting Stress—

Some corporate jobs are just as stressful as

military assignments. And some ongoing business

situations are as stressful as armed combat. You

can find the stressed employees by monitoring the

frequency of the conditions such as:

1. Anxiety

2 Indecisiveness

3. Irritability

4. Complaining

5. Forgetfulness

6. Loss of self confidence

7. Argumentativeness

8. Insomnia

9. Rapid emotional shifts

10. Physical exhaustion

— How to objectively measure stress —

Privacy laws prevent accumulation of specific

medical histories. But there are ways to get a

handle on what’s going on in your company.

Here are some practical ways to bench mark current

levels and monitor future stress related

conditions.

1. Absences – require strict reporting. Watch for

changes or trends; The more absenteeism, the

greater the chance that stress is a factor.

2. Tardiness – Develop a daily report and weekly

summaries. Are some departments worse than others?

Are people arriving late because they dread the

upcoming stress?

3. Medical claims – Seek generic information from

your health insurance company on the number and

expense of medical claims. Categorize information

by type of ailment and observe how the frequency

of visits compares to major corporate activities

or stressful times of year. You might find that

stressful periods coincide with or precede an

increase in medical claims.

4. Professional assistance – Experts can analyze

the ways stress might be at the root of physical

ailments. They can help you examine the cause-and-

effect relationships that escape the attention of

those who aren’t as well trained in stress

control.

5. Complaints or grievances – Keep records by

department. Those with a greater numbers of

complaints are probably ready for some stress-

control strategies.

6. Accident reports – Analyze accident reports

from the perspective of stress involvement.

Research how stress might have been the root cause

of accidents.

7. Errors in judgment or misstatements. Develop a

log of individual errors in judgment and

misstatements. If certain employees are prone to

making misstatements, they are prone to errors in

judgment. Monitor their decision making to

evaluate the cost of stress for your company.

8. Personal relationships – Note changes in the

way people relate to each other and the types of

action that cause some people to become more

argumentative. You can use this information to

control stress for the entire organization or for

specific individuals who are more sensitive to

stressful situations.

9. Customer service problems – Review customer

service problems from a stress perspective.

Determine whether some kind of stress reduction

could improve relations with customers or reduce

the number of errors involved with order taking,

preparation, shipping, or invoicing.

10. Quality problems – Include in your quality

reports a description of stress-related activities

occurring before and during the period in

question. Watch for trends among certain

employees or departments. Try to find the causes

of stress and what can be done to control the

stress reactions.

Corporate leaders and managers sometimes try to

manage the stressed people by using increased

demands and closer supervision. Instead, you

should use stress-reducing techniques to manage

the stressors.

While the demanding remedies of dictatorial

managers might get short-term improvement from

stressed employees, such relief is usually only

temporary. The increased urgency and focus on

details typically generates even more stress, and

the problems shift from slight distractions, such

as back pain, headaches, and inattention, to more

drastic reactions such as absenteeism and medical

problems, both good indicators that stress levels

need attention.

Just as in the Army, most leaders must be taught

to manage stress and to observe for negative

stress reactions. All managers need to understand

the importance of positive stress in maximizing

accuracy and productivity. And they need to know

how to control the negative stress for the benefit

of those involved and the bottom line.

If you don’t have qualified staff in your company,

outside consultants and trainers can help you

evaluate current stress levels and train everyone

involved. Remember, stress control is a

leadership responsibility.

Disc Herniations and Low Back / Neck Pain – Smyrna Chiropractor – Atlanta Ga

The disc is a small cartilage pad that is situated between two vertebras in your spine.  The soft jelly-like center (called the nucleus pulposus), is surrounded by layers of fibrous tissues.  Each disc acts as a shock absorber for the spine and provides space between adjacent vertebrae.  When healthy, discs allow for normal turning and bending.

Since intervertebral discs have a very poor blood supply, they depend on normal joint motion and the circulation of their surrounding joint fluids to bring in nutrients and remove waste.  If a spinal joint loses its normal motion and this pumping action is compromised, the health of the disc deteriorates.  Like a wet sponge, a healthy disc is flexible.  A dry disc is like a sponge that is hard, stiff, and can crack easily.  This is how many disc problems begin.

smyrna chiropractor

Because of the way each disc is attached to the vertebra above and below it, a disc cannot “slip” as is commonly thought.  However, trauma or injury to the spine can cause discs to bulge, herniated, or completely rupture.  This can be very painful, putting pressure on the spinal cord and surrounding nerves, interfering with their function.

The chiropractic approach to disc problems is to restore better motion and position to the spinal joint.  Besides reducing disc bulging, better spinal function helps reduce inflammation and begin the slow process of healing the soft tissues near the area of injury.  Many patients have avoided needless surgery or a dependency on pain pills by choosing conservative care.

Three Stress Buster Techniques You Must Know

Stress wakes up with you every morning. Stress follows you to work in your car, at your desk. You come home to Stress and go to bed with Stress. You hear yourself saying, “if only I could get some rest and relaxation.” But how?

Amazing stress secret revealed; The World is a Busy Place. You feed the kids, walk the dog, Stress, around the block, go to work, cram in a 15 minute lunch, fight traffic going home, take Stress to soccer practice, get groceries at Stress Mart, car repairs, music lessons and then you go to sleep with Stress snuggled next to you. Stress wants to have sex and instead of feeling all warm and fuzzy, you’re thinking, “I hope he’s kidding”. Whew, all this full and active life stuff is getting to be a little much.

There never seems to be enough time. That is, time for yourself. But now is the time to make some time because before you know it you’re out of time and after that, times up!

With stress reaching epidemic proportions, emotional eating has become the fastest way to release stress and that usually means fats and sugars. With the added stressors of overwhelming work schedules and the struggling demands of daily life, Americans are carrying heavier burdens and equally excessive weight. But you need not carry the weight of the world on your back, hips, thighs or belly – with these simple stress releasing techniques, you can release stress, boost your energy and lose weight at the same time.

1. Breathing for Stress Release and Weight Loss:

When you are stressed, your body releases powerful hormones including the major stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol can cause you to crave sweets and other carbohydrate rich foods. Since stress can raise your blood sugar as much as a candy bar, your body will greatly benefit from quick and simple, breathing techniques that have been used for years to arrest stress which helps you avoid the urge to succumb to comfort foods. If you drive a car you have time to do this. Take a deep breath and inhale through your nose for two seconds and exhale for four seconds out your mouth. Repeat this exercise 3 times before going into work and see how you feel. Bet you do! Repeat this anytime you’re alone throughout the day and again on the way home.

2. Stretching

As we age, our muscles shorten and become tighter and the range of motion in our joints decreases. This can put a damper on busy lifestyles and even hinder day-to-day, normal activities. Chores that used to be simple, such as bringing in groceries from the car or reaching for a jar off of the top shelf, now become difficult. A regular stretching program can help lengthen your muscles, increase your flexibility and make daily living activities easier.

Everyone can learn to stretch, regardless of age, size or flexibility. You need to incorporate stretching into your daily activities. There are plenty simple stretches you can do while watching TV, on the computer, or getting ready for bed. If you are doing strength training exercises, stretch in between sets. It feels good and saves time from stretching at the end of the workout!

It does not have to involve a huge time commitment, but stretching can end up giving you huge results! Here are just a few of the benefits you can expect from a regular stretching program:

*Reduced tension in muscles

*Increased range of motion in the joints

*Better muscular coordination

*Better blood circulation

*More energy as a result of the increased circulation

3. Yoga:

Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia demonstrated how just one session of yoga can lower blood levels of the stress hormone – cortisol. “Participants cortisol levels were measured before and after they practiced yoga, then again before and after they sat quietly while reading or writing. After the yoga sessions, cortisol levels dropped. There was no drop after the resting sessions.” Less cortisol means less cravings for sweets.

The thing that most people don’t realize about yoga is that when you go into a simple yoga pose and hold it, you’re using almost every muscle in your body. Just doing each pose for a few minutes helps your body to stay trim and your mind to stay fit. You wind up using your own body weight instead of hand weights and for the most part accomplishing the same thing, losing weight and gaining strength and stamina. Ever seen a pudgy yoga teacher? Me neither.

All these things lead to a stronger heart, stronger muscles, better blood circulation, more stamina and better sleep. Not to mention a better outlook when Stress rolls over and says, “oh honey?”

What is Sleep

Sleep is the regular state of natural unconsciousness observed in all mammals, birds, and fish. It is heavily influenced by circadian rhythms and by hormonal and environmental factors as well. Sleep appears to perform a restorative function for the brain and body, as evidenced by the myriad symptoms that result when an individual is deprived of sleep.

The function of sleep in health and in disease is being increasingly studied in specialized sleep laboratories throughout the world. Not only insomnia, but also more recently elucidated sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and narcolepsy are evaluated in such facilities.

Before advances in the fields of neurology, neuroscience, electronics, and genetics were made, scientists studied the behavioral characteristics of sleep, such as its pattern, depth, and varying frequency. In more recent times, the electrical impulses generated by the brain are recorded using a device called an electroencephalograph (EEG), and individual genes relating to sleep-related brain function, such as the circadian rhythm, are isolated. Molecular biology, medical science and epidemiology all play an important role in modern studies of sleep.

Sleep is often defined using specific criteria relating to EEG data. All mammals and birds fulfill the criteria for sleep based on EEG recordings. In animals where EEG data is not readily available, or their small size precludes recording EEG, behavioral and gene specific data are utilized for sleep studies.

Sleep regulation

The cycle of sleep and wakefulness is regulated by the brain stem, external stimuli, and by various hormones produced by the hypothalamus. Certain neurohormones and neurotransmitters are highly correlated with sleep and wake states. For example, melatonin levels are highest during the night, and this hormone appears to promote sleep. Adenosine, a nucleoside involved in generating energy for biochemical processes, gradually accumulates in the human brain during wakefulness but decreases during sleep. Researchers believe that its accumulation during the day encourages sleep. The stimulant properties of caffeine are attributed to its negating the effects of adenosine.

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus plays an important role in the regulation of circadian rhythms. The SCN is influenced by external light and generates its own rhythm in isolation. In the presence of light, it sends messages to the pineal gland that instruct it to cease secreting melanin.

Thus, three processes, each influenced by hormonal, neurological, and environmental factors, underlie sleep regulation:

· A homeostatic process determined by prior sleep and wakefulness, determining “sleep need”.

· A circadian process determining periods of high and low sleep propensity, and high and low REM sleep propensity.

· An ultradian process.

The interrelationships and relative importance of each process and system remain uncertain.

Memory is highly dependent on sleep. REM sleep appears to help with the consolidation of spatial and procedural memory, while SWS helps with the consolidation of declarative memories. When experimental subjects are given academic material to learn, especially if it involves organized, systematic thought, their retention is markedly increased after a night’s sleep. Mere wrote memorization is retained similarly well without an intervening period of sleep.

REM sleep (or Active Sleep) seems to be particularly important to the developing organism. Studies investigating the effects of Active Sleep deprivation have shown that deprivation early in life can result in behavioral problems, permanent sleep disruption, decreased brain mass (Mirmiran et al. 1983), and an abnormal amount of neuronal cell death (Morrissey, Duntley & Anch, 2004).

According to the Ontogenetic Hypothesis of REM sleep, the activity occurring during neonatal REM sleep is necessary for proper central nervous system development (Marks et al. 1995).

Given sleep’s heterogeneous nature, it is difficult to describe a single “function” of sleep. Based on current knowledge, it is apparent that it has many functions.

Coping with an Aging Spinal Column

Growing old is as certain as death and taxes. It is a natural phenomenon that no one is exempted from.  When you reach your thirties, you may already feel some changes in how you feel and how you look. You do not only mature mentally, but there is a significant change in your physical appearance. These physical changes often leave a lot of women conscious and insecure, especially when it comes to their faces. Some get hysterical when they notice fine lines at the side of their eyes or if they see a single strand of gray hair.

More than just the being bothered by the toll of aging on one’s physical beauty, women should also be concerned about how bones get weak with age.  As women grow old, the density of their bones sharply declines.  Pains are usually felt in different parts of the body, including the lower back.  One of the most common causes of low back pain, and also one of the most misunderstood bone ailments is called Degenerative Disc Disease or DDD.  Degenerative disc disease is not really a disease but a term used to describe the normal changes in your spinal discs as you age. Spinal discs are soft, compressible discs that separate the interlocking bones (vertebrae) that make up the spine. The discs act as shock absorbers for the spine, allowing it to flex, bend, and twist. Degenerative disc disease can take place throughout the spine, but it most often occurs in the discs in the lower back (lumbar region) and the neck (cervical region).

Many patients diagnosed with low back pain caused by degenerative disc disease are left wondering exactly what this diagnosis means for them. As we age, our intervertebral discs lose their flexibility, elasticity, and shock-absorbing characteristics. The ligaments that surround the disc called the annulus fibrosis become brittle and are more easily torn. At the same time, the soft gel-like center of the disc, called the nucleus pulposus starts to dry out and shrink. The combination of damage to the intervertebral discs, the development of bone spurs, and a gradual thickening of the ligaments that support the spine can all contribute to degenerative arthritis of the lumbar spine.

The pain usually occurs near the location of the affected disc. An affected disc in the neck area may result in neck or arm pain, while an affected disc in the lower back may result in pain in the back, buttocks, or leg. The pain often gets worse with movements such as bending over, reaching up, or twisting. The pain may start after a major injury, like if one is injured in a car accident, or in a minor injury such as a fall down a flight of stairs. It may also start gradually for no known reason and get worse over time. In some cases, you may have numbness or tingling in your leg or arm.

Degenerative disc disease is diagnosed after a thorough study of a patient, his medical history, and the results of a physical examination. Your health professional will ask about your symptoms, injuries or illnesses, any previous treatment, habits, and activities that may cause the pain in the neck, arms, back, buttocks, or legs. Then your physician will give you treatment options that are suited to your physical condition. At first, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are prescribed. Exercise programs to strengthen abdominal and spinal musculature, improve aerobic fitness, and reduce lumbar lordosis (swayback) are also needed to relieve the symptoms. Surgery is offered only after physical therapy, rest, and medications have failed to adequately relieve the symptoms of pain, numbness, and weakness over a significant period of time. Further treatment depends on whether the damaged disc has worsened into osteoarthritis, a herniated disc, or spinal stenosis.

People in their 20s and 30s may already have undergone some structural changes in their discs. As the aging processes continues, the prevalence of DDD increases. There are a lot of pressures when we age and we will continue to experience changes in our bodies, minds, and emotions — all of which are just a natural process.

By being aware and at peace with changes in life, we are better able to cope with the loss or decrease of physical strength and beauty.  We can still live normal and healthy lives as we grow old since there are other measures that we can do to avoid illness or reduce pain. Indeed, we would do well to accept change because it is part of human growth; and if we don’t grow, we are not really living.

The Natural Characteristics of Ginseng Root

The ginseng plant takes over 5-6 years to grow but the roots can live for over 100 years. It is a perennial that grows between 7 to 21 inches in height when wild. The root is creamy yellow or white and i t has rootlets that branch off sometimes in the shape of a person, thus giving it the Chinese name. It grows naturally on the slopes of ravines and in shady hardwood forests. Ginseng root is the most widely used herb in the Orient.

Ginseng root comes in three types. Korean or oriental ginseng is the most widely used ginseng in the world. American ginseng has a cooling quality on the body versus a heating quality for oriental ginseng. American ginseng grows from Quebec to Minnesota and to the south to Georgia and Oklahoma. The third type is Siberian, which is also common in North America. Siberian ginseng is a cousin of oriental ginseng but has similar properties. The name ginseng is Chinese meaning “Man Plant” from the roots frequent likeness to the human form.

The benefits of ginseng have been known for thousands of years. The benefits include being used as an adaptogen, which means it stabilizes physical functioning as needed. Ingredients in ginseng include 27 ginsenocides that enable ginseng to balance and counterbalance the effects of stress. It can be used to lower high blood pressure and also to raise low blood pressure. Ginseng also increases performance and energy levels in people that are constantly exhausted. Those who are recovering from an illness, people with a heavy work load or those that always feel run down are first to praise the effects of the herb.

Ginseng root contains vitamins A, B-6 and Zinc. These help in the functioning of the immune system. Ginseng will increase estrogen levels in women and treat symptoms of menopause. It improves memory as well.

Ginseng is used in a wide variety of treatments. These include headache, insomnia, ease in childbirth, strengthening teeth, treating fatigue without caffeine, reducing blood sugar levels, treating rheumatism, gout, neuralgia, and double vision.

Ginseng has also been effective in treating sexual desire. It does this by promoting sex hormone production. Ginseng is also helpful in the slowing down of the aging process. Ginseng’s real value is as a preventative though some use it in cures. As a preventative, it needs to be taken over a long period of time.

Root slices can be brewed slowly in a tea pot (silver or glass) for one hour. Generally a bitter tasting root indicates higher potency. Root slivers can also be added to soups or other dishes. In some preparations it is desirable to first grind your ginseng. The resulting powder can be used in meals or can be placed under your tongue where the high concentrations of blood vessels allow the ginsenocides to be absorbed directly into the blood stream. Also, try chewing the dried root like a piece of hard candy. A quick five minute soak in boiling water will make the root more palatable. The optimal dosage of ginseng is two or three grams a day. Ginseng tends to kick in after six weeks or so, and the most significant results can be seen after six months of use. This is especially true in people with pale unhealthy skin, lassitude, and depression.

Ginseng is safe but it is possible to overdose, especially on Korean ginseng, the most potent of the three types. Overdose symptoms may include nervousness, dizziness, mood changes, insomnia, headache and loss of appetite. Some warn women who are pregnant or nursing not to use it but others say it is safe for everyone. Check with your doctor to be safe.

Those who regularly use Ginseng Root receive improved energy, lowered blood pressure, stress relief and more health boosting benefits. Get some at MoreThanAlive.com.

Benefits of Turmeric for Weight Loss

Discover the incredible weight loss benefits of turmeric, how to best prepare them and how much you should eat to get maximum benefit from turmeric – one of nature's amazing fat burning foods.

Turmeric, an herb used to spice many Middle Eastern and Asian recipes, is also known as curcumin. Powdered turmeric is made by grinding the curcurmin plant, a type of parsley. The deep yellow color of curry powder is attributed to turmeric.

Turmeric is a rhizome that is smaller than ginger. Its flavor is delicious and pleasant. Turmeric comes in a number of varieties and colors – from white to deep orange. It is the dark, orange color of curcumin that causes soups, stews, curries, and rice dishes to have a deep, yellow color. The flavor of turmeric is gingery, peppery, and earthy.

Saffron is more expensive that turmeric, so turmeric is often used in its place. You can find powdered turmeric for sale through the year at your local market. You can find fresh turmeric rhizomes in specialty Asian markets and sometimes in the grocery store.

Fat Burning Benefits of Turmeric

It is a healthy and powerful spice that helps to burn fat.

You will find dietary fiber, potassium, vitamin B6, iron, and manganese in turmeric.

Both potassium and manganese are helpful in reducing cholesterol levels and blood pressure, as well as regulating bodily fluids. Potassium aids in blood glucose metabolism and it helps the body to produce energy.

Hemoglobin contains iron. Hemoglobin is very important for carrying oxygen throughout the body via the bloodstream.

We need iron for the function and development of the brain, as well as to regulate body temperature, metabolize muscle activity, and protect the immune system, among other things.

The fiber in your diet will make stools bulkier to get rid of toxins quicker. When you eat foods that are high in fiber, you will feel full without overeating.

Curcumin is the main ingredient in turmeric. It is this that causes turmeric to be such a deep yellow color. This is also the ingredient that imparts health benefits.

In Ayurvedia Medicine and Chinese Medicine, turmeric has been traditionally used to treat the following: menstrual difficulties, toothaches, colic, chest pains, bruises and hemorrhage, blood in the urine, jaundice, and gas. Those are only a few of the conditions it helps treat.

What does turmeric contain that makes it so good for health?

Curcumin is the yellow orange pigment found in turmeric. An overwhelming number of studies have proved that this is the main anti-inflammatory agent found in this spice. As a matter of fact, the anti-inflammatory nature of curcumin, combined with curcumin's antioxidant and cancer-preventing qualities, is absolutely phenomenal.

Curcumin contains an anti-inflammatory property that can be compared to strong prescription medines and readily available over-the-counter drugs. And it does not have any of the harmful side effects.

Researchers have reported that curcumin might be able to help in treating inflammatory bowel disease, ulcers, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis.

Curcumin contains antioxidants that can help in the metabolism of free radicals before they can harm the cells of the body. The harmful effects of free radicals is evident in such diseases as arthritis.

There are many suffering from arthritis who report relief of symptoms when they add turmeric frequently to their foods. This relief of symptoms may include the being able to walk further and longer without pain, a reduction in the severity and duration of morning stiffness, and reduced swelling of the joints.

According to a 2004 issue of Science, animal research indicated that curcumin might be capable of correcting the genetic defect that is primarily accountable for causing cystic fibrosis, a deadly disease of the lungs that is identified by thick mucus that triggers an extremely dangerous infection.

Mucus is damaging to the pancreas and also interrupts the body's digestive processes and the proper absorption of necessary nutrients.

Curcumin's antioxidant characteristics help the colon to ward off the harmful effects of free radicals, which are responsible for damaging the DNA composition found in cells; This damage can lead to cancer of the colon. Curcumin can actually destroy mutated cancer cells as well as preventing them from moving through the body.

Curcumin also improves liver function.

Frequent use of turmeric has been linked to a lower instance of the formation of tumors, as well as cancer of the colon, prostate, lung, and breast.

A study done at the University of Texas suggests that curcumin has the ability to slow down the growth of breast cancer cells found in mice, even when the mice had already contracted the disease.

Turmeric and Quercitin (an antioxidant found inions) are both phytonutrients which, when combined in recipes, have demonstrated an ability to less precancerous lesions in the intestinal tract. There was a reported reduction in both the incidence and size of these lesions.

Turmeric contains curcumin and phenethyl isothiocyanates, two phytochemicals that are plentiful in vegetables belonging to the cruciferous family (brussels sprouts, brocoli, cabbage, cauliflower, turnips, kohlrabi, and kale), and these phytochemicals are very helpful in limiting the development of cancerous prostate Cells in human beings. They can even help in preventing the spread of prostate cancer that has already become established in the body.

And even more than this, current research shows that eating foods with turmeric can decrease the chances of getting childhood leukemia.

Turmeric helps your body to increase detoxification, which leads to faster fat burning, as well as offering a general improvement in your health to its life-saving anti-oxidant properties.

Curcumin, which is found in turmeric, may be helpful in preventing the oxidation of cholesterol in the body, which helps to prevent the plaque build-up in treaties that often leads to heart attacks or strokes; It can also help in reducing symptoms of arteriosclerosis and heart conditions due to diabetes.

Turmeric is gaining support for its potential protection against Alzheimer's Disease, too.

Preparing Fresh Turmeric

It is difficult to find fresh turmeric, but you can find ground turmeric in many places. It is often found in the spice aisle at your grocery or super store. Look for this item in ethnic markets and spice stores. It may be possible to buy turmeric fresh. Naturally, it is preferred to get turmeric that is organically grown. Do not be swayed by the color – the color may differ because there are many turmeric varieties.

Fresh turmeric should be stored in a container with a tight seal. Store it somewhere cool and also free of dampness and direct light. Be sure to keep your fresh turmeric rhizomes refrigerated.

Take precautionary measures with this spice, because the dark yellow color can still stain your hands or clothes.

The following are a few ideas for cooking with turmeric.

It has an intense taste, so take care to use sparingly. Turmeric is great in pasta, seafood, tomato dishes, egg salad, or just sprinkled over eggs.

Try turmeric mixed with sour cream as a sauce for shellfish. It is delicious.

You might discover that turmeric is frequently an ingredient in pickles and mustard.

Include some turmeric when you prepare dressing to pour on salads. The taste and appearance will both benefit from the bright yellow color.

You can use turmeric in relishes, marinades, and savory slices.

Try adding a bit of the spice to leggings such as lentils, or to some cooked winter squash; Thai cooks use turmeric extensively in appetizers, stir-fried dishes, curries, soups, and desserts.

You can spice your green tea with turmeric to enhance its cancer fighting properties.

You can try turmeric with tofu recipes.

You can sprinkle turmeric on a variety of dishes to add a cheerful burst of color and an array of healthy, fat burning benefits.

Serving Size

Approximately 2 teaspoons is appropriate, except the recipe indicates otherwise.

Aches and Pains During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is the most beautiful phase in a girl’s life. But with the happiness the mother also carries aches and pains during pregnancy.

During pregnancy period the mother undergoes with both mental stress and physical strain.

So the following discussion is on the aches and pains during pregnancy, and the ways to face those and a few tips to reduce them.

Belly button tenderness is a problem that may sound frivolous, but the expanding uterus can be the cause of this particular syndrome, and can become the most painful during the 20th week of pregnancy.

The vaginal secretions increases during pregnancy leads to increased secretion of leukorrhea (the odorless clear/white discharge) and as a result the vaginal secretion increases.

The increased amount of the discharge is not something to feel scary about, until, the color of the discharge changes to greenish-yellow and or spreads a foul smell.

Doctor’s advice is needed immediately if experiencing soreness or pain in the vaginal area.

Palms of hands and soles of feet develop a reddish color due to the hormonal changes. This syndrome is called “palmer erythyma”. Palmer erythyma disappears after conceiving without any treatment.

Developing skin tags during pregnancy is a common issue. Skin tags are generally developed where skin gets rubbed against skin or cloth, viz. folds of the neck; bra line.

“Phylogenic granulomas” is another common and harmless syndrome seen during pregnancy. These are nothing but non-cancerous tiny tumor growths in the gum. These tumors vanish on its own after conceiving.

“Carpel tunnel syndrome” is again another common syndrome during pregnancy, which results a pinched nerve in the wrist. This syndrome generally disappears after conceiving, but, few women require a surgery to rectify this problem.

Elevating the affected hand or putting a plastic splint at night could be the ways of comforting while having this syndrome.

Ligaments in your hips get stretched and cartilage softens up due to the hormonal changes during pregnancy. This may lead to “hip soreness”. There is no real treatment for this particular complaint. But changing of positions frequently while sleeping, can be the way to avoid hip soreness.

Overcome Infertility – What is "Heat" in Traditional Chinese Medicine in Treating Infertility

As we mentioned in previous articles, infertility is defined as inability of a couple to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse or can not carry the pregnancy to term. It effects over 5 millions couple alone in the US and many times more in the world. Because of unawareness of treatments, only 10% seeks help from professional specialist. In this article, we will discuss what is "heat" in traditional Chinese medicine in treating infertility

I. Definition
According to traditional Chinese medicine heat-pathogen prevails in summer and pertains specifically to Yang. It tends to move upward and outward, impairs the body qi and fluid and is often accompanied by damp-pathogen

II. How heat pathogen effects fertility
Expose yourself in heat may increase the risk of energy overflow as well as speed up your body function leading to infection, inflammation and abnormal bleeding. Patient is considered heat are diagnosis with over flow of energy, skin diseases, qi interruption or accessibility of the body's organs to discharge enough toxins.

1. Kidney function
Since kidney is a second line defense of the body, accumulating heat in the body not only causes lost of fluid but also increasing the risk of kidney stone and abnormal function of kidney, if it is not treated. According to traditional Chinese medicine, kidney plays an important role in men and women reproductive function, deficiency of kidney yin, increasing the risk of sperm production and quality of sperm in men and distorting the normal menstrual cycle in women.

2. Liver function
Liver plays a vital role in regulating the production of certain hormone in the prostaglandins family, fire liver as abundant yang qi causes abnormal function of liver and wakes up the liver diseases leading to menstrual pain and cramps for women, distorting the menstrual hormone production and decreasing The chance of infertility. In men, it may cause abnormal ejaculation and sperm count.

Abnormal liver function also causes abnormal function of spleen, the vital organ for the reproductive system which plays an important role for conception.

3. Blood flow
Heat pathogen interferes with blood circulation in the body, most people with heat pathogen have symptoms of high blood pressure. Since it increases the blood flow uncontrollably, it causes not only nervous tension that can disturb women menstrual cycle, but also increases the risk of abdominal swelling and breaking off of the small vein leading to vagina abnormal bleeding in women. In men, it causes low sperm count.

4. Immune system
Since heat pathogen increases the heat in the body which causes lack of the yin and out flow of energy, leading to weakened immune system resulting in increasing the risk of infection and inflammation that cause accumulation of free radicals and irregular cells growth, thereby increasing the risk Of infertility.

Health Benefits
1. The antitussive activity
In the study to investigate polysaccacharide influence on experimentally induced cough, showed that that the tested polysaccharides exhibited statistically significant cough-suppressing activity, which was noticeably higher than that of the non-narcotic drug used in clinical practice to treat coughing. The most expressive antitussive activity was observed with the polysaccharide from marsh mallow, containing the highest proportion of the uronic acid constituent. Negative influence of the tested compounds on expectoration was negligible when compared to that of codeine(1).

2. Gastroprotective effects
In the study to evaluate the effect and the possible mechanisms involved in the gastroprotective effects of a chloroform extract (CE) of the roots from A. lappa and its fractionsshow that the CE protects animals from gastric lesions by reducing gastric acid secretion via inhibition of gastric H+, K+ -ATPase(2).

3. Sexual enhancer
In the Oral administration of Arctium lappa L. roots extract at 600 and 1,200 mg/kg body weight significantly increased the frequencies of mount, intromission, and ejaculation frequency (p < 0.05), found that aqueous extract of Arctium lappa L. roots enhances sexual behavior in male rats. The aphrodisiac effects of the plant extract may be related to the presence of flavonoids, saponins, lignans and alkaloids, acting via a multitude of central and peripheral mechanisms. These results thus support the traditional use of Arctium lappa L. root extract for treating impotence and sterility(3).

4. Anti Cancers
In the study to  identify of non-toxic chemotherapeutics from herbal medicines remains to be an attractive goal to advance cancer treatments, showed that  purification of the selective cytotoxicity in the extract of Arctium lappa L. resulted in the identification of arctigenin as tumor specific agent that showed cytotoxicity to lung cancer (A549), liver cancer (HepG2) and stomach cancer (KATO III) cells, while no cytotoxicity to several normal cell lines. Arctigenin specifically inhibited the proliferation of cancer cells, which might consequently lead to the induction of apoptosis(4).

5. Anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effects
In the study to examine the effect of ALBE on the release of β-hexosaminidase in antigen-stimulated-RBL-2H3 cells. We also evaluated the ConA-induced expression of IL-4, IL-5, mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), and nuclear factor (NF)-κB using RT-PCR, Western blotting, and ELISA in mouse splenocytes after ALBE treatment, suggest that ALBE inhibits the expression of IL-4 and IL-5 by downregulating MAPKs and NF-κB activation in ConA-treated splenocytes and supports the hypothesis that ALBE may have beneficial effects in the treatment of allergic diseases, including atopic dermatitis(5).

6. Etc.

Side Effects

1. Not to use the herb in case of  chicken pox, small pox,  qi deficiency and diarrhea.
2. Do not use the herb in newborn. children or if you are pregnant or breast feeding without first consulting with the related field specialist.
