Acne is an age-old problem that human beings have had to deal with for thousands of years already. Lasers are a new technology that most people got to know about through the futuristic movie Star Wars, where the hero Luke Skywalker used his laser sword to battle the enemies. It is kind of ironic that a laser beams are now used to kill the bacteria that cause acne on our skin.
Some people have holes in their skin because of acne – in these cases, there is a laser treatments that’s called resurfacing. This helps to create new layers of skin on top of these holes in the skin. If you popped pimples in the past, then you will probably have some acne scarring, and in these cases laser treatments can be an excellent choice.
A specific form of laser therapy is called diode laser. This is used to destroy sebaceous glands in the middle layer of your skin – it’s these glands that produce sebum, the oily substance that can clog up your pores. This treatment is quite painful if no local analgesics are utilized. Also, remember that sebum is actually a helpful and positive substance, it is just the fact that the excessive production of this good substance is causing problems. So completely destroying sebaceous glands might possibly have some negative consequences in the future, but no research has been done on this subject.
The downside of laser treatments to get rid of pimples is that they have to be repeated on a regular basis to remain effective and you have to pay for them out of your own pocket.
In the coming years, these acne laser treatments will further evolve and become more effective – there is no question about that.
